Issue 9 2022 Term 1 Week 9 - 31 Mar 2022

From The Principal

I was extremely impressed with the Redlands production of Shrek The Musical which delighted packed audiences during the three performances at The Concourse, Chatswood last week. On the evening I attended, this most uplifting performance had the audience riveted throughout, with exceptional singing, dancing, acting and musicianship that showcased the impressive talent and confidence of our students. My warm congratulations to all students involved and sincere thanks to the dedicated team of staff and volunteers who made the show come to life. It gave the school community a wonderful celebration of the life of the Performing Arts in the School at the end of term.

It is inspiring to witness students living the School values and acting on issues that are important to them. In order to provide support to Refugees fleeing Ukraine, this week the students held a bake sale on the Senior Campus and a slushy sale on the Junior Campus. They have also established a Redlands group UNICEF fundraising page, through which the broader school community can offer support. At the time of writing the amount raised was over $9,000 with their updated goal being $20,000. I encourage you to support the leadership and drive of the students.

During the Junior School assembly this week, Ms Colagiuri announced that Redlands had placed 1st in Australia and 4th globally in the Education Perfect Spanish competition, which is a phenomenal achievement. With students from over 50 different countries attending Redlands, the international feel of the School is something that we cherish and we are very much looking forward to the International Day celebrations on campus next week.

Tomorrow evening our Twilight parent event, hosted by our wonderful Redlands Parents and Friends Association, provides a great opportunity to meet new families and reconnect with current families. Due to the inclement weather, this event will now be held in Dunnet Hall on the Junior Campus (rather than in the Fahl Garden on the Senior Campus).

COVID-19 Update

We received notification from AISNSW  this week that the isolation requirements have altered slightly for students who are household contacts, as highlighted below.

A household contact of a COVID positive person must isolate for 7 days. Following that time period, they are not obligated to self-isolate for the next 14 days, even if another household contact becomes COVID positive. This means a household contact does not need to self-isolate as a contact more than once in a 21-day period unless the person is diagnosed with COVID-19. In this case they will need to self-isolate again for 7 days as a confirmed case.

If a household contact is notified of a new case within their household after 14 days since they completed their self-isolation, they will need to isolate again for 7 days unless they have previously tested positive, and it has been no more than 12 weeks since they ceased self-isolating as a positive case.

So Much to Celebrate

It is a testament to our dedicated and energetic community that after a long and disrupted term there are still so many exciting events and activities to celebrate. Over the past week we have experienced so many wonderful displays of student talent and commitment in the Secondary School.

Last week the outstanding performances of our students in the musical, Shrek, were enjoyed by so many. The performance of the students, including those who were on the stage as well as those who were beneath it, in the pit, and behind it, in hair and make-up and stage crew, was second to none. Many of you have commented that it felt like were watching a professional performance, not one produced by a school. And yet it was! Such talent, dedication and commitment. Thank you to all involved, including the parents who supported our young people through the enriching experience. It takes a village – and this was evident in the success of the 2022 musical.

This week, it was excellent to see our Yr 12 students lead the assembly on Tuesday. They provided a range of clearly articulated and well delivered updates for the Secondary School community. Their messages were well received and struck just the right note, at this time of the school year. I enjoyed seeing so many different faces involved it the assembly, and want to acknowledge the great work of the Student Leader Team this term. Supporting and guiding them in their endeavours is the Dean of Students, Ms Marita Jansons, who provides them with the space and direction they need to independently and confidently lead the student community.

Camp

Yr 8 students managed to enjoy a couple of days away this week at Camp, before being forced to return when weather conditions on the mid-north Coast deteriorated. Thankfully, Yr 8 did enjoy some hiking, bike riding and canoeing before having to come indoors for the night. As always it is our goal to do our best to provide opportunities for the student, despite the limitations posed by the pandemic, and now the extreme weather. The ongoing reality of living with COVID-19 means we persist with our plans, we adhere to the Public Health requirements and we adjust as and when is necessary. We consider the safety and wellbeing of our students and the surrounding communities. Given that the local area of Stuarts Point evacuated last night, we are glad we returned Yr 8 to Sydney when we did. Next week, Yr 12 go on their Camp, postponed from the start of this year. They are headed to the Blue Mountains for a few nights and will engage in some outdoor activities, study for their upcoming assessment block and have downtime, where they can hang out, enjoy each other’s company and rest.

Study Skills

On Tuesday evening, Yr 7 parents and students were invited to a Study Skills webinar presented by Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Services. There was a strong attendance for this session and it was wonderful to see so many students and parents interacting with Dr Salter’s engaging workshop via the chat function. If you were unable to attend the session, you can still access the slides via the Yr 7 Core Page under ‘Resources’ where you will also find the ‘Family Pack’ that Dr Salter used throughout the webinar.  A reminder that all Redlands families have access to the hundreds of resources Dr Salter has available on her website via the following details:

Student Fundraising Efforts

The students’ efforts across a couple of different fundraising drives have been fruitful. House Captains Catina and Cristian were closely followed Emmi and Sam, in their fundraising endeavours. Next Tuesday is International Day, where will hope to raise more funds for the Ukraine UNICEF appeal. So far we have raised $9115 and increased our goal of $5,000 to $20,000. Yr 9 student, Alexander Smith, approached Emmi and Sam about his concerns for those in the Ukraine and has since composed the following letter, which I share with you now.

Dear Australians,

I hope you are all well. As we all know, Australia is a fortunate country, shielded from much of the world’s horror. However, not every nation can claim the same, most particularly Ukraine. The unjustified Russian invasion of Ukraine is becoming the fastest growing humanitarian crisis since the second World War. Approximately 6.48 million people are estimated to be displaced within the borders of Ukraine, and more than 3.3 million people have fled Ukraine, becoming refugees. 1,119 civilians have been killed and 1,790 wounded. 136 children have been killed so far in the war, and most likely many more wounded.

These children, grandmothers, fathers, mothers, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters and friends could have easily been ours. It is easy for us, far away, to dismiss these people’s lives, and deaths, as numbers on a page. However, I believe to do so, would break the ideals we were brought up with, of what an Australian should be, kind, generous, and willing to care. We should not be bystanders of evils. I believe ignoring this issue, of which so many are suffering, would make me, and should make you, feel disgusted. As such, we must act, and the best way we can do this is through donation, so sincerely, please do so. Thank you to all those who have already helped, and are going to, God bless you, and the unfortunate in Ukraine. Slava Ukrani.

Kind regards,
Alexander Smith, on behalf of Redlands

Gratitude for Redlands Staff

Today, I want to acknowledge and thank the entire Redlands Secondary School staff who have so diligently and generously worked in the service of students and families this term. Our staff have their own families, worries, ups and downs, and because they are educators or work in an educational setting, they also have the responsibility of looking after other families – your family. This is a privilege and one we value in our profession.

This term our teachers have worked tirelessly to support students learning from home, whilst undergoing isolation. They have collaboratively worked to ensure consistent access points for students via iLearn. Our Year Advisors and Assistant Year Advisors have navigated communication with parents and carers whilst simultaneously developing enriching opportunities for growth for the students in their cohorts. Our Subject Coordinators have shifted programs, scopes and sequences and assessment schedules to enable flexibility for students who are unwell with COVID-19 or faced with a period of isolation due to Household Contact status. Bespoke programs have been created to support students and families. Check-ins via Zooms, phone calls and back-to-school meetings take place to return students to school and to ensure consistency, support and reintegration. Our Tutors have been instrumental in ensuring that the daily experience of schooling for our students is smooth, engaging and often, personalised, to their specific needs and preferences. Our Sport Department, Cocurricular teams, Learning Plus teachers, Deans and Support Staff have also significantly contributed to running the School as normally as possible, and in a way that enables the students to have typical experiences, despite the pandemic and despite the impact of wet weather. At all times, their intention is kindness and care. As a school, we are recognising our staff next week in a morning tea, hosted by the Principal. Personally, I can’t thank the staff enough for their immense efforts and ongoing positivity this term, but I am hoping to try over a cup of tea and a muffin, before we conclude the term for Easter break.

Below are some photos of the Ukraine UNICEF Bake Sale and the House Dodgeball Competition.

Rowing

Senior Head of the River

Last weekend saw our senior rowers close out the season with the Senior Head of the River held at Iron Cove. Once again our rowers were outstanding with some very strong results across the program. Of most significance is our Senior Girls 1st crew of Georgia Verschoor (Yr 11), Alana Mansfield (Yr 11), Briar Carter (Yr 11), Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 12) and Charlie Harman (Yr 12) who were commanding in their history-making win of the School Girl Division 1 Coxed Quad Scull. This is the first time since 2012 that the School has won a Senior Division 1 event and the first time that Redlands has won this particular event.

Significant results are as follows:

  • SB Div.2 4x+: 2nd Place (Aaron Drake, Matthew Fry, Oliver Rose, Will Natilli & Zoe Naismith)

Summer Tennis

Last Saturday was the final round of the 2021/22 Summer Tennis season. Overall, it was a great season despite the discouraging wet weather. We ended up with Team 1 finishing 2nd in the Northern Beaches Competition, and Team 21 & 22 finishing 2nd within their respective divisions in the Northern Suburbs Competition.

On behalf of the coaches and myself, I would like to thank all parents, carers, and students for being so committed to the early morning training sessions and matches. I would also like to thank all of the students for demonstrating great sportsmanship against other teams and within themselves at training.

Best of luck to all students with their winter sports, and I look forward to hopefully seeing you all back in Summer Tennis at the end of the year.

This weekend sees the Senior and Inter teams heading to Barker College to play across Saturday morning whilst the Junior teams will be in Lang Gym for some more trial matches. The Redlands Rhino has the most up-to-date timings with teams being released tomorrow.

A huge congratulations to Jemma Donoghue (Redlander 2018 and current 1st VII netball coach) who made her debut for the GWS Giants netball team on Saturday night, the Giants came away with a 2 point win against defending premiers the NSW Swifts, it was great to see Redlands represented on the court!

Hockey

It was great to see our Hockey students training at Macquarie on Saturday as they prepare for their upcoming games. Despite the rain our students were still able to get a training session in and get some valuable training on a grass field in preparation for the season ahead.
We have trial games scheduled this Saturday 2nd April at Barker College. Rugby

With how weather affected our preseason has been, it is important to really focus on the positives within our squad as a whole and celebrate some of the performances we have already seen.

Last week we highlighted our ISA Representatives in Hugo Scott, Will Pearson and Josh Hicks, looking at how they have already jumped into their training and their focus for another representative season. For this week we are highlighting some the leaders within our program and how they have stepped up already across our trainings and also in our team meetings.

Our first leadership spotlight is on our newest member to the Redlands Leadership group, Freddie Hart in our Under 13s squad. I had the pleasure of watching first hand Freddie’s leadership whilst he was on the Year 7 Camp in Jindabyne. The first person to offer support to a teammate or classmate he was also the first to take on a job and lead. He has been a brilliant addition to our program and I for one cannot wait to see him lead his teammates out in their first match next term. A player to watch in the future for certain.

Elsewhere across program, Oliver Cooke, Jesse Forrest in our Under 15s and Alfie Leach in our Under 16s have continued to build on leadership from last season. All three of these boys will be attending our Rugby Camp in Berry these holidays and I am excited to see them drive standards across the three days.

As I have said, the effect weather has had on our Preseason has been severe, with some teams having only been able to train one session. In speaking with our association, ISA, the Directors of Rugby have agreed that there will be an extended period for Term 2 which will give us more time for additional session and also positive trial periods. More information will be sent out this week and early next which will cover our holiday sessions, the Berry Rugby Camp and also our trial games to begin what will be a fantastic Redlands Rugby Season.

Waterpolo

Waterpolo kicked up a gear on Friday night with the Senior Boys & Girls entering round 2 of the NSSWPA Senior competition, both girls teams have been a little disrupted the last 2 weeks but have continued to grow and impress the coaches with their teamwork, a lot of the girls have been playing multiple games in order to keep the teams from forfeiting which is proving to be great for their fitness. The boys have also continued to gel, with a number of the team learning on the go and picking up what is a very challenging sport.

ProFit Mouthguard Fittings

There will be a representative from ProFit Mouthguards at the school next week, Wednesday 6 April. ProFit Mouthguards are professionally fitted onsite using dental moulds and offer protection for teeth and gums whilst also reducing the severity of concussions caused by contact sports.

  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Community Update

Late last week I had the pleasure of attending Shrek The Musical, Redlands first live musical production since 2019, and it was spectacular! It was truly impressive to see how the buzz around campus from all of the students, staff and parents involved in the lead up, transformed into a sophisticated and professional program of performance and production. Thank you and well done to all involved on this much needed and uplifting event for our community.

Our next community event takes place tomorrow evening. Our Twilight event will now be hosted in Dunnet Hall, rather than on Fahl Garden as advertised, due to the inclement weather forecast. The event is sold out with tickets still being sought by our community.  If you have tickets and are now unable to attend then please let us know by contacting us here.

Redlands recognises the vital relationship between home and school and provides parents with opportunities to actively engage with the School. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Redlands parents and to be involved with the School. Volunteer opportunities include classroom support, event support, Redlands Parents and Friends Association involvement or joining one of the Friends of Groups that support our many and varied Cocurricular activities.

The Redlands Friends of Groups (FoGs) support various activities across the School be they educational, cultural or sporting. The School sets the strategic, tactical and operational direction of the activity and allocates an appropriate staff member who engages with the respective FoG to achieve the activity’s overall objectives.

Being part of a FoG enables parents and carers to support the building of a strong and positive sense of school community through:

  1. Connection – by forming a supportive network that welcomes new members to the activity.
  2. Support – by undertaking encouraging energetic and respectful support (of all participants) at events and matches, organising social activities through the year and an annual celebration dinner.
  3. Assistance – many activities require active assistance such as timekeeping or scoring, assistant refereeing or marshalling or making uniforms, costumes, props or scenery.

FoGs have been established for Basketball, Drama, Football, Hockey, Music, Dance, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing and Snowsports. If your children are involved in these activities then I would encourage you to contact the relevant FoG.

Science at Redlands has a Long Tradition of Innovation

We have asked our Archivist, Marguerite Gillezeau, to share some headlines about our Science program since its inception.

Science has been taught since the School’s first year in 1884 with the first matriculating student Sophia Liggins in 1887 including Physics among her subjects. Intrepid excursions around the state in the first decades of the 20th century involved Redlands girls abseiling into quarries, specimen hammers wedged into their belts, or dropping underground in cages into mining pits, all as part of the School’s experiential scientific education. The School’s first Science Room was built in 1908 to store, examine and dissect the botanical and geological specimens from these field trips.

Although for the most part, Science subjects taught pre-World War II were mostly Geology, Botany and an early form of Biology, the students were taught by experts, such as botanist Constance Le Plastrier and geologist Mabel Roseby, and went on to make their mark in a variety of scientific professions. Dr Thistle Stead (Harris, Class of 1920) became a leading botantist, environmental scientist and activist, Dr Anne Atkinson (Raymond, Class of 1942), a geologist and vulcanist (expert in volcanoes) and Myril Evans (1930), Redlands’ first graduate in Agricultural Science, became a food chemist and bacteriologist. A significant number of Redlanders entered health professions and became not only doctors, but renowned health advocates such as Dr Vida Sams (Class of 1915). Marie Cotton (Patison, Class of 1936) was the first woman to win the University Medal in Dentistry at the University of Sydney.

After World War II, Dr Sue Morey (Class of 1959) and Dr Diana Horvath (Longhurst, Class of 1961) also became leading health advocates. The Science labs evolved from a single room in the Liggins Building to two laboratories in the Mowll Building (replaced by the Learning Hub) with Physics and Chemistry offered for the first time in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A push for girls to take up Science in the 1960s by the government led to the building of the Science block in 1967 (now the Roseby Building, renovated in 2007), and a new era of scientists following in the footsteps of Dr Angela Dulhunty (Class of 1964) who pursued a career as electron microscopist, academic and founding director of Biotron (molecular biology technologies) and Dr Merilyn Edwards (Class of 1964), former research scientist and manager at CSIRO and founder of biotech company EvoGenix Ltd. There have been graduates in all branches of Engineering, particularly since the school became co-educational in 1978, including Aeronautical Engineering. Science teachers, such as Denise Playoust, have been responsible for igniting a passion for science for a significant number of Redlander scientists, as our current Science staff continue to do today.

Lismore Flooding Fundraiser

Hi Everyone,

Charlie and I are launching a short collection drive and fundraiser to help out a school in Lismore that has been severely impacted by the recent flooding. Recently, while reading the news, I came across images of Trinity Catholic College, and the devastation they experienced at their campus and across the wider community. As their school campus is located beside the Wilson River, they experienced the brunt of the flooding, with all of their buildings being damaged by the floods. After connecting with their principal, he suggested that collecting/fundraising for basic school stationery supplies would be of most use as both the Lismore and Ballina main streets had been affected by the flooding, and such supplies were hard to obtain. Additionally, all students lost their lockers as they had been inundated, and many students’ homes were damaged or destroyed.

So, in order to help out these students and families in this challenging time, we are asking every student to bring in school supplies to their Tutor from Monday 4th April. Boxes will be provided in every tutor classroom. If you are unable to bring in anything, we’d really appreciate it if you were able to donate via a bank transfer to the fundraiser below, where Trinity will be able to buy supplies in bulk. Thank you for your generosity, as the donations will be of great use to those students, especially given the second round of flooding Lismore has been experiencing in the past few days.

Fundraiser Donations:

  • BSB: 062-000
  • Account No: 2022 9618

Year 12

It was great to have Yr 12 involved in the Whole School Assembly this week, led by our Captains, with the cohort present in the Hall while it was live-streamed to the rest of the school. We were also privileged to hear Omar Rihani, Eden Borrie and Kyle Banfield sing one on the musical items from their recent show, Shrek.

School Musical

Talking of the School Musical, wow, what a performance! I was lucky enough to attend on the opening night and was amazed by the talent of our Yr 12 students. Shrek, played by Omar Rihani was brilliantly performed with a convincing Scottish accent throughout. Eden Borrie, as Fiona, had her first ever performance on stage in a musical, and acted and sung like a professional. Kyle Banfield was the hilarious Donkey and provided much laughter and entertainment throughout the show. Callum Wardman-Browne spent the evening on his knees, shuffling around the stage and performing brilliantly in the role of Lord Farquarad. Other Yr 12 students involved in this wonderful performance were: Iris Buisman, Emma Canton, Isabella Kendrigan, Mia Kloiser-Jones, Maya Koppers, Edwina Magnus and Alyssa Price. A big shout out also to those behind the scenes: Aaron Drake and Izaac Nisbet in the band; Sienna Blake in hair and make-up; Charles Blake, Alex Gibbs, Jacob Gold, Isabelle Stepniak and Brianna Irvine in production and properties.

Camp

We hope your child is looking forward to Camp next week – we have a wonderful 3-4 days of activities, reflection and celebration planned. Some of our outdoor activities are being offered in collaboration with Blue Mountains based companies who have some additional information and requests. If your child has nominated to take part in Rock Climbing, please complete this online form for Blue Mountains Adventure Company (BMAC), and choose “Check in as unlisted guest” https://web.wherewolf.co.nz/phvu4s. If your child has chosen Horse Riding, please read the information from Centennial Glen Stables that was emailed to you by the School earlier this week. Unless you have any further questions, no further action is required and we will confirm with the company on your behalf. You will have also received a camp letter and equipment list via email, providing you with more information. Please can you ensure that you have completed the online permission forms and all medical documentation if you haven’t done so already.

Twilight in the Garden

Richard and I are looking forward to catching up with Year 12 parents and carjers at Twilight in the Garden tomorrow night. Due to the inclement weather, this event has been moved indoors to Dunnet Hall on the Junior Campus. We look forward to seeing you face-to-face for the first time in a while.

The event is sold out with tickets still being sought by our community. If you have tickets and are now unable to attend then please let us know by contacting us here.

CIS Football Cup – report by Toby Van Extel (Football Captain)

After narrowly beating Shore 3-2 in the first round of the CIS Cup, the Redlands Football Firsts Team travelled to play Cranbrook in the second round last Wednesday. In hot weather (a vast contrast to the torrential rain in the first game), the team came away with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a penalty. The team did a lot of defending and showed great resilience and teamwork to get the win. It was great to see everyone staying positive, focused and alert when the team was under a lot of pressure. When the full-time whistle went after 80 minutes of fighting, the passion was seen on every players’ and coaches’ faces as we celebrated the win. Altogether, it was a really great win with a lot of younger players playing well and contributing, and we all are looking forward to our next game in round 3.

IB French – ‘Farewell, Mr Haffmann’, movie review by Charlotte Harman and Louise Colin

On Monday 21 March, the IB French B and ab initio classes, along with Year 11 French students, Mme Barbeau and Mme Keogh had an excursion to the Orpheum to watch Adieu Monsieur Haffmann, a French film set 1941, as a part of the Alliance Française French Film Festival. It was great to be immersed in the French language and, to learn about the history of the Nazi occupation of Paris through the story. The French film style was evocative and moving, and had many connections to the French IB syllabus, as it evoked themes of relationships, cultural and religious identity and ethics. The narrative was surely confronting, as it explored the story of Monsieur Haffmann, a Jewish jeweller and his employee who took up ownership of the shop, while Haffman hid in his basement from Nazi customers. A mix of moral dilemmas was confronting and unfolded with surprising twists. Overall, it was “un film incroyable”, and was a really valuable experience!

HSC Illness and Misadventure

Please remember that if your child misses an assignment or assessment for whatever reason, or they need an extension, they must fill in the illness and misadventure form and get it signed by their subject class teacher before bringing it to Ms Lucy Benjamin in the Student Services Centre. This is part of NESAs requirements.

Students must also provide evidence of the reason for their absence, usually in the form of a medical certificate. If they have COVID, they should provide a screenshot of their PCR test result, or the email confirmation from NSW Health that they submitted a positive RAT. If they are unsure about what evidence to provide, students are asked to email Ms Benjamin.

Ms Benjamin is very happy for this documentation to come to her when the student returns to school. She does not expect the form to be emailed to her if the student is off sick.

All forms are available on the HSC Core Grad 2023 iLearn page under Procedures and forms

Shrek The Musical

“All the things that make us special are the things that make us strong…”

Last week, the cast, crew and production team put on a phenomenal performance three days in a row at The Concourse, Chatswood. The students worked tirelessly throughout this short term to make a professional musical that showcased their incredible talent. The dynamic characters came to life through acting, make-up, costume and stage presence, in a musical with many important themes for all stages in life. The last live musical performance for this Year Group was in Yr 7. It was an honour to hear the maturity in each voice, the beauty and accompaniment of the pit orchestra and to fully engage in each scene as it unfolded on stage.

  • Olivia Everingham  – Mad Hatter and Knight 3
  • Tara Gold – Pig 2 and Blind Mouse
  • Annabelle Harman – Dance Ensemble
  • Hallie Hunt – Dragon, Fiona Ogress and Bluebird (voice)
  • Scarlett Ilic – Humpty Dumpty, Dwarf and Guard 4
  • Sholto Mirrlees-Black – Pinocchio

  • Katharine Boase – Co-Choreographer and Costume Liaison
  • Ashleigh Moore – Co-Coreographer
  • Tracey Everingham and Friends of Drama – Costume

Subject Selection Process

Students will receive an overview of the Subject Selection Process the first week in Term 2. This process includes a Q & A senior voice panel, early entry information, Sydney University Admissions Centre Presentation, Yr 10 Into 11 Subject Information Evening, Subject Selection Interviews and submitting subject choices. This is an important process for students to consider their own interests, course preferences and possible future aspirations. We ask students to remain open-minded, to ask many questions and to take in all information prior to making a decision. Parents will be included in many aspects of this process. However, this process is focused on the student and it is a fantastic opportunity for students to fully engage, own the process and their own decisions, while feeling agency in this important point in their secondary school education.

Congratulations Rowers

The Rowing season includes an intense training schedule, high expectations and a lot of good fun. Many students choose to be a rower to be part of the incredible team and to commit to a schedule that supports them not only in their Rowing but in their academic and social life as well.  Many students this week were celebrating the change in their morning alarms from 5am to 6am and enjoying the additional sleep-in while missing their friends and mornings on the water as the season comes to an end.  Well done to all rowers for a strong season.

A special congratulations to Zara Naismith, Emma Sullivan, Mikaela Sanger-Larsson and Fletcher Logan for competing in the Australian Rowing Championships in Victoria this week.

Camp – Wet, Wild and Fun

Please see some snaps from camp below – whilst it was a little shorter than planned, we certainly packed a lot into the few days we had.

We will have a little more to come next week.

Yr 8 Vaccinations 2022, Wednesday 6 April 2022

The Northern Sydney Public Health Unit will be holding a NSW Schools Vaccination clinic on Wednesday 6 April to administer dose 2 of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) to Year 8 students who began the NSW Schools Vaccination programme in 2021. This will also be an opportunity to catch up any missed Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis vaccines (dTpa) for students who were unable to attend the clinic 2021. Students new to Year 8 who have not received the HPV dose 1 vaccinations or the dTpa should contact their GP.

Parent Information Kits that included an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement were returned to School in 2021. You do not need to complete anything further.

Redlands and The Northern Sydney Public Health Unit have added additional infection control measures within the programme to help minimise viral transmission between students, nurses, and school staff.

In preparation of the clinic:

    • Students who are not feeling well must be kept at home. Students who are sick, especially with any acute respiratory symptoms, will not be vaccinated. The nurse will perform a pre-vaccination assessment and determine the student’s suitability to be vaccinated. Catch-up vaccinations for these students can occur at the next clinic.
    • Students must bring a mask to wear at the clinic.
  • Students will be asked to use hand sanitizer upon entry to the clinic and before returning to their classroom.
  • Students will arrive in smaller groups to prevent close-proximity queuing, and physical spacing will be applied.
  • Please ensure your child has had a good breakfast on the morning of the vaccination.

A Record of Vaccination card will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Please note that if a student is absent from this clinic, they will be offered any missed doses at a subsequent clinic. They do not need to go to their GP for these vaccines. Year 7

It is hard to believe that we have nearly completed our first term of high school. This week Yr 7 students were a buzz with the Shrek Musical and happy to have had the opportunity to see it last weekend. It is without doubt that this performance has inspired many our students to develop their Performing Arts skills and I am sure we will have a large contingent from our Year Group in the next Redlands Musical. Congratulations to Samantha Beck, Eva Blundell, Alice Haggman, Isabella Solgaard and Amelie Swann for their marvellous contribution to the Musical.

Thank you to all our parents and students who attended the Yr 7 Study Skills via zoom on Monday evening. Dr Salter has a wealth of knowledge and expertise in student organisation and study and her sessions are packed to the seams with useful strategies and tips. I often encourage students to “hone in” on three takeaways from these sessions and aim to implement them as part of their study regime. Yr 7 students will be studying the text Skellig by David Almond next term in their English course. Please do encourage your child to read this over the holidays in preparation for learning next term.

Reflecting on Yr 7 Camp – Student Reflections

Spending four nights in a small tent and stepping in mud doesn’t sound ideal but it was all a part of the camping experience and that’s what made it fun. While I was on camp, I achieved quite a few things, I reached the summit of Mount Kosciuszko; it was a long walk, and the weather wasn’t pleasant, but it was definitely worth it. I built a bridge with my camp group using only planks, rope and an eski, we debated intensely towards the end as we were on a roll with some really good ideas. The camp wouldn’t have been fun without my friends of course and over the camp, I have made new ones and strengthened friendships. I realised that I liked bucket hats and sunglasses during camp, I wore my bucket hat every single day. This camp was my first camp ever and I am very happy to have experienced it with Redlands!
Samuel Turton – 7MB Tutor Group

Kosciusko was probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. Although on the day we went it was very foggy and misty, it was a thrilling experience. The thought of hiking up the tallest mountain in Australia was in my mind the whole time. For my group, it took us around one hour and a half to climb up the peak and another hour and a half to climb down. When we did eventually get to the peak the views were amazing, we could see neighbouring mountain ranges and the clouds below us, it was amazing. Hiking up the mountain with some of my friends was also great fun because we got to talk all the way up to the peak and all the way back. It was also a great way to meet new people and make friends with them, which for me is really important.

Redlands Hosts Yr 6 Interschool Tech Challenge

Redlands hosted two local schools, Loretto Kirribilli and St Aloysius, at our first Yr 6 Interschool Technology Challenge held last week.  Students from all three schools formed teams to tackle STEM related challenges ranging from the use of sphero robots to engineer solutions for complex terrain park challenges to the use of micro:bits to imagine, invent and prototype a solution to an everyday problem.  A highlight for our students was the rich collaboration and new friendships they formed while working on creative solutions with students from other schools. Our eLearning Coordinator, Ms Anagnostu, organised this initiative ably supported by our Year 6 student team who both co-hosted and participated in the event.  We acknowledge our Year 6 students: Jason Gong, Freya Carroll, Hugo McDonald, Sienna de Saxe, Eddie Williams, Kate Rintoul, Audrey Kwok, Aimee Kang, Arav Basu, Liam Randall, Amelia Sampaio-Little and Vivienne Matthews, for their contribution to and involvement in this event.

Redlands UNICEF Fundraiser – Ukraine Emergency Appeal

Joining on from the fundraising that has started in the Secondary School to support the UNICEF Ukraine Emergency Appeal, Junior School students and families are encouraged to consider supporting this cause which I know has personally impacted some of our community considerably.

In particular, I was deeply moved to hear from one Redlands family who have relatives who normally live in Ukraine but are now in various countries across Europe with many who don’t speak English. The family have been trying to assist from Sydney during the night to help them try to find accommodation and deal with visa information as best possible, but the tyranny of distance is very hard.

As a school, we have set a goal of reaching $20,000 by the end of this term and we currently sit at a staggering total of over $9,000 in a few days.

Connected to this, some of our student leaders have organised the sale of slushies next Thursday 7 April for a cost of $2 with all proceeds going to this cause.

International Day – Tuesday 5 April

Next Tuesday 5 April, our School community will celebrate our global-mindedness and diversity through our annual International Day event. Students and staff can dress up in international dress or colours and for the day and teachers will have a series of themed lessons during the day. Parents are also encouraged to connect with their child’s class teacher if you are able to present or share your own backgrounds and experiences utilising the knowledge we have in our community and connecting home and school further.

Yr 3 Heritage Walk Excursion

In unforeseen sunshine, Yr 3 enjoyed an excursion exploring some of our local history on a heritage walk around the Balmoral foreshore. The walking tour enabled the students to gain a better understanding of how communities change over time, how significant people contribute to communities, how communities use the space they have and how that changes over time, and how we preserve elements of the past for future generations.

It was wonderful to have parent helpers too as the year group divided into small groups and my thanks are extended to Ms McPhillips for her coordination of the walk and to teachers and parents who assisted on the excursion.

Masks on Buses

A reminder that ALL students require a mask on Wednesdays for Sport when they are likely to travel to and from a venue on a bus. This remains a mandatory protocol currently.

Term Time Leave of Absence

Whilst I recognise and acknowledge that the opening up of international borders has allowed and will allow many of our Redlands community to reconnect with loved ones across the world, as we move forward, please do aim to minimise disruption to students’ learning by looking to travel in the designated holiday periods. Your support with this is much appreciated by teachers as they plan for learning for each student and if you do anticipate the need to leave term early, please do write to me to explain this as is part of our School process of leave approval.

Reminder – Cutlery Library Donations

If you, or anybody you know, have any spare spoons or forks, please donate it to our Junior Campus cutlery library. A container is located outside the canteen for any donations.

Whilst the bamboo cutlery currently being used is biodegradable, it is still single use. A cutlery library would allow the canteen staff to reuse the spoons and forks, further reducing our carbon footprint at Redlands.

Redlands International Day

Tuesday 5 April

International Day is the day when we celebrate Redlands’ diverse international community and highlight the cultures within our school community. Did you know that we have students from over 52 countries on the Junior Campus!

Let’s celebrate this by wearing something that reflects these cultural connections.

International Day Celebrations

On Tuesday 5 April, Redlands will be celebrating International Day along with the rest of the Junior Campus. Students are invited wear any costume or clothing of their choice that reflects their family heritage, country or culture. A reminder that closed-in shoes and sun-safe clothes are required.

Easter Eggs

As a reminder to our community, although children giving each other chocolate eggs at school is a lovely idea, we ask that no chocolate eggs or sweets be brought to school. This is to ensure the health and safety of all our students and avoid the sadness associated with missing out or losing a gift. In lieu, hand-made cards would be welcomed.

Winter Uniform for Term 2

A reminder to families that as we enter Term 2, it is time for the children to wear their Winter uniform.

For Redlands House children, this means a long sleeve Redlands polo with tracksuit pants, fleecy vest or fleecy jumper. For girls opting to wear tights under their skort, please make sure they are navy blue.

Please also remember that the children will still require a hat each day.

Thank you from Mrs Huon

A big thank you to all of our wonderful families at Redlands House for a fabulous first term for 2022! The staff highly value and greatly appreciate your ongoing support and contributions to our Preschool program. I encourage you to continue to provide us with your feedback regarding day-to-day preschool life, events or activities. It is this feedback that contributes to our Quality Improvement Plan and helps us to navigate through change when necessary. My email contact is chuon@redlands.nsw.edu.au or please feel free to pop in for a chat at any time.

Wishing you all a restful holiday break and I look forward to seeing you all next term.

Junior Sport

CIS Swimming Championships

Congratulations to all our swimmers who represented HICES last week at the CIS Swimming Championships. This was a selection carnival for the CIS team that will compete at the NSW PSSA Swim. Our students represented Redlands and HICES well with individual swimmers had some great swims. While we did not have any Redlands students make it through to NSW PSSA Championships representing CIS they are to be commended on their efforts and were recognised at this week’s assembly.

CIS Football Trials

Redlands had 3 students representing HICES at the CIS Football Trials:

  • Apollo Mangos
  • Jack Reid
  • Felix Shwabsky

Winter Representative Sport Trials

We were able to commence our Winter Sport trials for all grades on Wednesday last week in beautiful conditions. With a quick turnaround from Basketball, Tennis, Girls Football to Rugby, Hockey, Netball and Mixed Football the students seem as excited as our coaching staff to get going. As you would be aware the second winter sport trail session with draft teams playing matches takes place this Saturday (April 2)  all on site at the Junior School at various staggered times. This has been advertised in the sport calendar since the 25 January, reminders through Engage and on Pulse and is compulsory for all students to attend who have nominated a representative sport (Saturday sport) for Winter.

If your child is unable to make, please complete the sport absence form, this includes those students are in isolation. Please note that students not in attendance for the second trial will be listed as YET TO TRIAL in the lower team on the team lists that can be currently be viewed on Pulse. Once we recommence our Winter season in Week 1 of Term 2 these absentees can be assessed over that week in both training and match and graded appropriately.

Students are remined that the meeting time is 30min before the scheduled start time so a warmup, instructions can be given. Entry and exit points to the school are the same as last week. Can you also confirm pick up times with your child as we had a few children that to wait up to 45min to be collected.

Specific details can be found here, (scroll half way down) on the home page of Redlands Pulse Sport Page

Winter Sport Trials Information

Please select the following link to view the draft teams so far. It has been explained to students that if they are not happy with these so far then there is opportunity to change over the next trial sessions.

2022 Winter Sport Draft Teams

At Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY                 in direct comparison to other students on the team

ATTENDANCE    any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE            this is based on behaviour and general work ethic at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Winter Non-Rep Sports

Please note as we enter week 2 of this program this Wednesday that no further changes between sports can be made. External contractors will now invoice the school for these programs and your account will be charged.

Code of Conduct

At Redlands Junior School we belong to the IPSHA organisation for the majority of our sporting pathways. Can I encourage all parents to familiarize yourself with the IPSHA Code of Conduct in preparation for Round 1 next term. There are no league tables, no grand finals, no trophies in this association and that is what makes it different from clubs and associations.

While the majority of venues are listed on the draw there is a supplementary that contains maps etc if you require more assistance in locating grounds for Saturday matches.

Drama and Theatre

Musical

Congratulations to all the students who were part of the brilliant success of this year’s spectacular Musical Shrek. This year seemed slightly different as we juggled the complications of COVID 19. As they say in theatre ‘The show must go on’ and that is exactly what happened. There was an exciting buzz in the theatre and we are proud of all the energy and commitment every student brought to the production. Whether the students were on stage, under the stage, side of stage or working with complicated set pieces, they gave their very best, learning many new skills and making many strong friendships across all Year Groups. This wonderful experience could not have taken place without the support and assistance of so many people.

The Musical Team would like to thank all the staff, tutors and parents, in particular Tracy Everingham and Sue Banfield for volunteering and giving up their time to support this fantastic production.

Don’t miss Battle of the Bands – THIS  MONDAY!

This coming Monday 4 April sees the lights shining on our Junior and Senior Rock Bands as they take to the Edwards Auditorium stage to battle it out in their divisions within the Rock event of the year!

Accoladed musician Travis New will be adjudicating the event, and guests will rotate through the John Roberts Centre cross the night – depending on which of the three sessions their child or friend is participating in.  Junior Rock bands are our opening acts on the night once again, and there is an allocation of up to 4 tickets per Junior student available by clicking the correct ticket link below.

Indicative ‘earliest’ start times are below to allow fans to plan their arrival in time for the correct session.

DIVISION ONE – 6.00pm
DIVISION TWO – 7.15pm (earliest start time)
DIVISION THREE – 8.00pm (earliest start time)

Technical Rehearsals during the Day

Senior students have been sent their rehearsal schedule directly. Please reach out to the Music Office if any questions arise. Soundcheck for the Junior Rock Band students is during the school day on Monday also. They will be chaperoned to the Senior Campus for rehearsal and should meet Mrs McGlade outside the Junior Music Office at the beginning of recess with their snacks and their instruments.

Tickets

After the Junior Rockers perform, Divisions 1, 2 & 3 are open for parents and friends to attend. Due to the number of Senior performers on the night, there is a limit of 2 tickets per performer for the competition divisions to avoid over-crowding.  A reminder also that all guests are required to wear a mask when indoors.

Senior Music Festival 2022 – THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!

Pencil the date (17 June 2022) in your diary now for a Senior Music Festival you won’t want to miss. In addition to usual cocurricular rehearsals as happen throughout a term, some ADDITIONAL rehearsal requirements have been added to our calendar. These are listed on Pulse under EVENTS, and will be added to iLearn for all participants also. Please note that as an addendum to the letter that went out earlier this week, the rehearsals that landed near the Queen’s Birthday weekend have now been rescheduled to the week before, to allow families to make the most of the long weekend.

Festival T-Shirts

As momentum towards this cornerstone event builds, students are excited at the prospect of reintroducing the Senior Music Festival ‘show t-shirt’.  Students will be offered this alternative to school uniform for after-school and weekend rehearsals in the lead up to the event.

If your child is in a cocurricular ensemble or production crew, to assist us ordering the correct sizes, please click the link below to specify your desired size by the last day of Term One (or an approximated size will be ordered on your behalf).
