Issue 6 2022 Term 1 Week 6 - 10 Mar 2022

Community Update

I trust you have managed to dry out a little as the sunshine finally breaks through here in Sydney. In another testing week for the School we give thanks for the strength of our Redlands community and how we continue to pull together to assist those in need. I know a number of families who were significantly impacted by this week’s weather events and have heard many stories of how our staff, students, parents and carers rallied to assist and support those affected by arranging pick-ups, food and shelter (and a few unscheduled sleepovers).

As things begin to dry out a little we look forward to welcoming our Yr 7 parents and carers to our Meet and Greet event on Monday 14 March. This event provides a terrific opportunity for our Yr 7 parents and carers to connect with our teaching and support staff along with other parents and carers of Yr 7 students.

A reminder that tickets are on sale for our Twilight in the Garden event on Friday 1 April.  We are expecting a big crowd in 2022 given we have been unable to host this much loved event in the last few years.

My thanks to those who donated uniforms, and to the Redlands Uniform Shop and the ever active and passionate Redlands Parent and Friends Association (RPFA) for their collective effort in fulfilling the recent Second Hand Uniform Sale. This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund.  The sale finishes tomorrow so there is still time to top up your uniform requirements.

It is always a pleasure to hear what our well-travelled Alumni community have been up to, and this week we were delighted to visit Redlanders in NSW’s Southern Highlands and connect through Zoom with our US and Canada based alumni. Click here to read more on these illuminating connections.

A reminder that the Redlands Parents’ Prayer group is meeting for the first time this year on Wednesday 16 March from 8pm to 9pm via Zoom. Please contact Sally Swan (Mum to Adelaide Year 8) at swanlsally@gmail.com for further information and the Zoom link. The meeting provides our current parent community with the opportunity to come together to pray for the concerns of the school and of families.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

From the Principal

We are conscious that a number of our families and staff have been significantly impacted by the flooding events this week. The RPFA always look to provide support in these situations and please do not hesitate to let the School know if you are aware of members of our community in need or personally need assistance at any time. The strength of our community is evident in these situations.

My heartfelt thanks go to all students who collaborated on producing such an inspiring International Women’s Day (IWD) assembly this week. Our School Captains, Sophia Maxwell and Jack Murray, led the way with intelligent, thought-provoking speeches, followed by a video which captured student and staff voice regarding what IWD meant to them. The assembly video also highlighted a student led art project that illuminated shared responsibility and statements of strength and conviction. Our guest speaker Captain Scully-O’Shea shared powerful messages and insights from her career and family life, including her goal to create the conditions in the Navy where every person can thrive and the importance of ‘cognitive diversity’ on teams when making key decisions. What particularly struck me was how naturally our male and female students perceptively articulated the importance of IWD and this year’s theme of ‘Break the Bias’. Yet another example in which our coeducational environment provides breadth of opinion and ‘cognitive diversity’.

Yr 2 students and the Yr 6 Technology Leaders played an integral role in a presentation to Preparatory School parents this week, focused on how ICT is utilised in the Prep curriculum. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to present and a pleasure to have parents on campus for such a workshop.

I enjoyed the opportunity last weekend to attend the ACT Head of the Lake Rowing Regatta, not only due to the improved weather! It was fantastic to see such a large Redlands contingent of supporters and our crews performed with distinction. In an exceptional result Redlands was awarded the Trophy for Best Overall Girls’ results at the regatta and our Year 8 Boys and Girls 1st crews won the Year 8 Schoolboy Coxed Quad and Year 8 Schoolgirl Coxed Quad A Finals respectively. The following day at the ACT Rowing Championships, our Year 8 Boys and Girls 1st crews also won the Under 15 Quad division and our Year 9 1st Boys won the Under 16 Quad division. Over the two days, there were many other podium finishes and I congratulate all crews and their coaches on their stellar achievements.

On Monday this week, 28 Junior School students represented the School at the HICES Swimming Carnival, with our Redlands team placing 3rd overall. I congratulate all students and make special mention of the 12 students who qualified for the HICES team to compete at the CIS Carnival.

Congratulations also to the Secondary School students who represented the School with pride in the ISA Swimming competition on Wednesday. With our internal carnival cancelled earlier in the term due to COVID and the Year 7 students on camp this week, our preparation wasn’t ideal; however, the team performed at a high level, with a number of 1st place results in Division 1 of the competition. We are still awaiting the final results however I make special mention of Captain of Swimming Erik Scott (Yr 12), Loch Wilding (Yr 11) and Xander Halfen (Yr 10) on their collective 4 x 1st, 2 x 2nd and 2 x 3rd places.

Further details of the Rowing and Swimming achievements can be found in the Sports sections of Note Day.

I am very much looking forward to attending the Redlands production of Shrek The Musical at the end of this month, the School’s first live musical since 2019. Tickets are now on sale HERE for the following three performances:

  • Thursday 24 March, 6:30pm
  • Friday 25 March, 6:30pm
  • Saturday 26 March 2:00pm

Foundation

Greetings from Southern Highlands

Last Saturday I had an opportunity to meet with a few of our Redlanders living in this region, Wendy Savill (Redlander 1970) and Christine Van Aalst (Redlander 1961). We met at the Sturt Gallery in Mittagong and had a wonderful discussion about their time at Redlands and their exciting journey after leaving the school gates. They both had very vivid memories of their times at Redlands including school bags, uniforms and of course Mrs Humphery, the former Principal.

In their times the Mowll building, a predecessor to the Redlands Learning Hub on the Senior Campus, was an innovative building for their times, when Biology was the only Science subject taught at school.

The mindset they developed at Redlands, at a time when there was no Careers Advisory service, helped them to advance in their future careers,  Wendy trained in psychology and her love for animals led her to become a breeder. Christine has set up her own production of beautiful jewellery. Their message to current Yr 12s is to follow your passion and never stop trying.

US/Canada Virtual Chapter Meeting

Thank you to our International Alumni Community for joining our USA/Canada Chapter meeting last week. The conversations, memories and sharing of personal experiences as Redlanders was very inspiring, and reflective of our talented and very treasured Redlands Community.

It was very encouraging to learn that most of them would like to remain connected and also contribute to our current school leavers by sharing their experience and expertise for tertiary education and early career choices.

New and Notable

We have had a phenomenal start to the online second hand uniform sale, with over $10,000 in pre-loved uniforms sold in the first 24 hours! Senior sizes are almost sold out, but there is still stock of Prep sized uniforms – particularly the littlest blazers, a bargain at a third of the retail price. Thanks so much for your support of our sustainability efforts and contribution to the Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund. Special thanks to all the volunteers who have spent hours sorting through donated uniforms to make this sale happen.

And a shout out to all those families offering to help each other this past week – from those families offering to take in kids who were unable to go home on Tuesday due to the floods, to those providing advice and comfort to anxious Yr 7 parents whose kids left for camp on Monday, as well as those giving continued support to families suffering from COVID. Thank you! We have such an amazing community! If you have any concerns or need any help, please feel free to reach out to your class or year parents or to anyone on the RPFA Committee directly and we would be more than happy to assist.

Head of Secondary School

It’s been an extraordinary week!

The Secondary School students reverting to their typical Timetable was slightly overshadowed by the onslaught of rain, which they managed in their (slightly wet) stride. Thankfully, early on Monday morning, we were able to farewell Yr 7 on camp before the rain hit, and they boarded the buses in Redlands Lane and were off and away before the rest of the school community even arrived.

Monday afternoon saw the close of application deadline for students wishing to attend Winter School in 2022. I spent my afternoon listening to the rain fall, and engaging with the 113 applications submitted by students. It has been such a pleasure to hear, read, and watch interested students share their motivations and passions. With Mr Gray, our Dean of Activities, we have been able to get to know these students more closely and deeply appreciated the efforts they expended in composing their application – they were genuine, inventive and personal. Currently Mr Gray and I are reviewing applications and will provide an update about the application process in the coming week.

Tuesday saw the Secondary School celebrate International Women’s Day via a student-led Assembly.

Year 9 students, Jemima Hugman, Bettina Butcher, Georgina Williams and Lara Prineas collaborated with Year 12 School Captain Sophia Maxwell to produce a diverse and varied assembly for Secondary School students. As well as watching a video, an art installation, and hearing from our School Captains Sophia and Jack and our Dean of Students, Ms Jansons, and Principal, Mr Webber, we also had the privilege of hearing from our Guest Speaker Captain Casey Scully-O’Shea. Casey was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross in 2020 for her outstanding achievement in the field of recruiting and in February 2022, she was appointed as Director of Navy Culture. Casey spoke engagingly to the students and her IWD messages were well received. Got a spare half an hour? Watch the student-led IWD Assembly here.

Yr 7 Camp

Wednesday was a really fun day for me as I arrived at High Country Campus in Jindabyne to join Yr 7 on camp. Whilst they have endured a few wet days (but nothing too extraordinary) they were in great spirits and still full of energy, albeit slightly muddy and damp.

Yr 7 have been canoeing, walking, hiking up Mt Kosciusko and also engaging in some personal reflection or solo time. Interestingly, some found the ‘solo time’ to be the most challenging as they weren’t quite sure what to do with themselves for half an hour, on their own, without a device. Following this, they composed letters to their future selves, which we will give back to them when they depart in Year 12. Today, I am going up Kosci with six of the groups, and their teachers and OEG leaders. I am looking forward to spending some time with the students and also getting my steps in.

As well as activities, Yr 7 have been learning how to be part of a campsite community, as these photos attest. Last night they cooked an early dinner and tonight, the final night of camp, they gather for a barbeque. They depart early Friday morning, after bacon and eggs rolls for brekkie.

Burn Bright Workshop

Today we were excited that Year 8 could engage in a Burn Bright Workshop called It’s In our DNA. The program forms a sense of connectedness with peers and school community by exploring friendships and passions. By the end of the half day program, students are able to:

  • Build and encourage connections and friendship within Year Groups, to feel a greater sense of belonging.
  • Find purpose and identity in the things they enjoy doing or are passionate about.
  • Appreciate their own strengths, appreciate diversity and celebrate difference.
  • Identify and apply appropriate conflict resolution techniques.

Tomorrow night is the Yr 11 Harbour Cruise, an event postponed from 2021. Yr 11 will be treated to a three-course meal as they sail around Sydney Harbour. I am looking forward to attending this event with Yr 11 and having some downtime mid-Term 1. The Harbour Cruise will be an event which will celebrate Yr 11 embarking on their senior studies.

Captain Scully-O’Shea joined the Royal Australian Navy through the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1995 and her career highlights include supporting Border Protection Operations as an Officer of the Watch and later Navigating Officer of HMAS Cessnock, and an exchange posting to the Royal Canadian Navy Sail Training Ship HMCS Oriole.  She was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross in 2020 for her outstanding achievement in the field of recruiting and in February 2022, she was appointed as Director of Navy Culture. Important Harbour Cruise Information

Tomorrow evening, students should aim to be at Wharf 1, King St Wharf by 6.30pm at the latest so that students can be breath tested by security before boarding the Harbour Cruise.

As mentioned in last week’s Note Day, students will disembark at 10.15 pm tomorrow evening at Wharf 1, King St Wharf. Students must be collected before 10.30pm by a parent or carer. Should you wish to nominate another adult to collect your child, you must email your written permission and name and contact details of the adult to the Year Advisors by tomorrow. Please note that students will not be allowed to leave by taxi or Uber unless accompanied by their parent, carer, or nominated adult.

Yr 11 Covid-19 Illness and Misadventure

Please note that if a student in Years 11 or 12 has tested positive for COVID on a RAT test and is absent for an assessment as a result, they must then go for a PCR test. The positive result from the PCR must be sent into school via an email to SS Absence with Ms Lucy Benjamin/Mr Darren Taylor ccd into the email for the purposes of illness and misadventure. Students should still report their positive test results to the usual people at school too such as their teacher or Subject Coordinator. The positive PCR is their medical certificate as they cannot attend a GP surgery as a positive case.

Negative RAT result with symptoms of Covid-19

If a student is off sick on the date of an assessment and testing negative for COVID on a RAT, they still need to visit their GP for a medical certificate that should cover their entire absence. If their symptoms overlap with COVID symptoms, they may need a PCR before they can visit the GP; they will need to get the PCR, await the result and then go and get the medical certificate.

Close Contact

If a student is a close contact of a family member who has contracted Covid-19  and needs to stay at home to isolate and misses out on an assessment, they need to email through to SS Absence with Ms. Lucy Benjamin and Mr. Darren Taylor ccd into email, along with a screenshot of the positive PCR test result from the family member who has contracted COVID-19.

International Women’s Day

On Tuesday, Yr 11 celebrated International Women’s Day along with the rest of the School. The global theme for International Women’s Day in 2022 is Changing Climates: Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’. This year’s theme is all about recognising and amplifying the important role women and girls around the world play in addressing climate change. Gendered norms and ideas of what a woman’s role should be in society often mean that women and girls experience the impacts of climate change and natural disasters differently. Yet in spite of this, their voices are frequently side-lined when it comes to developing solutions to the climate crisis – with 67% of all climate-related decision-making roles currently held by men.

Yr 11 Study Skills Session with Prue Salter

To help our Yr 11 students become more powerful learners and to give all students a greater opportunity to improve and maximise their marks in the senior years, the school have organised a study skills session next Monday during Periods 5 and 6. Dr Prue Salter of Enhanced Learning Educational Services will be conducting the session, building on the work done in previous years at the parent/student study skills events. This will be a valuable session for Year 11 which will help guide their senior studies for the next two years.

Culture College NSW Cultural Immersion Experience – Yr 10 and 11, 19 – 25 April

We are delighted to offer a NSW-based cultural immersion program with our partners at Culture College. This replaces the planned Homeland trip to Northern Territory, and means we are able to offer this experience to more students in Years 10 and 11.

Based on Dharug Country near Wiseman’s Ferry, and with the support and involvement of Dharug and Yuin elders and community members, this alternate program will offer similar authentic learning experiences planned for Arnhem Land yet on local country with a local context.

These include visiting important Indigenous sites, learning about kinship, connecting to country, dreaming stories, men’s and women’s business and other cultural activities.

The program represents a unique opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in local Aboriginal culture that few people in NSW will experience. It offers not only benefits to our students and community but is a continuing source of employment for Indigenous people in uncertain times.

The dates for this program are from Tuesday 19 April to Monday 25 April inclusive. The total cost of the program is $2,965.

International Women’s Day

Imagine a gender equal world.

A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

Together we can forge women’s equality.

Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

This week, Yr 9 celebrated International Women’s Day. We were lucky enough to have Betti Butcher, Lara Prineas, Jemima Hugman and Georgie Williams work closely with our school leaders to put together a wonderful assembly and beautiful artwork which provided students an opportunity to reinforce commitment and action forging women’s equality, while also celebrating women’s achievements. Our assembly guest speaker, Captain Casey Scully-O’Shea CSC, RAN, provided students with a wonderful insight into her past, current and future aspirations as a female leader within Defence.

Captain Scully-O’Shea joined the Royal Australian Navy through the Australian Defence Force Academy in 1995, where she enjoyed three years undertaking military training while also completing a Bachelor of Science through UNSW Canberra. Qualified as a Maritime Warfare Officer, Captain Scully-O’Shea’s service history included sea and shore postings in Darwin, Cairns, Sydney and Canberra. Her sea-going highlights included supporting Border Protection Operations as an Officer of the Watch and later Navigating Officer of HMAS Cessnock, and an exchange posting to the Royal Canadian Navy Sail Training Ship HMCS Oriole.  Captain Scully-O’Shea had been employed across the Australian Defence Force in Navy Headquarters, Fleet Command, Defence People Group and Headquarters Joint Operations Command. Since 2009, she developed deep expertise in Organisational Development and Reform through roles recruitment, leader and team development, culture transformation, design-led innovation and strategic communications. She was awarded a Conspicuous Service Cross in 2020 for her outstanding achievement in the field of recruiting and in February 2022, she was appointed as Director of Navy Culture.

Please see Ms Gemma Van de Peers entry for access to the webinar.

Burn Bright Workshop, Thursday 10 March

Today, Yr 8 attended the workshop ‘Burn Bright: It’s in our DNA.

This program is an interactive seminar reflecting on the idea that before we lead, we must first look within ourselves in the early years of high school in order to grow the next generation of leaders.

ISA Swimming

Well done to all the Yr 8 students who competed at the ISA Swimming Carnival on Wednesday. There were some excellent results from the day.

Rowing

What a fantastic effort from all the Rowers last weekend at the Head of the Lake Regatta in Canberra. It was so lovely to hear the wonderful results and experiences shared from our Yr 8 crews.

Clean Up Australia Day

Last Sunday, it was great to join students, staff and families from across our School as part of Clean up Australia Day. Amazingly, the sun was out for the first hour and the group were able to make a difference to our local community with their combined efforts with many continuing in the rain too.

Thank you to all who were able to be part of this community event.

National Young Leaders Day

On Tuesday, our Yr 6 leaders attended the Halogen National Young Leaders Day at the International Conference Centre in Darling Harbour, where they heard from four Australian guest speakers. Each speaker delivered an important message about learning from mistakes and perseverance. This year’s speakers were Bronte Campbell, Josh Pyke, Anthony “Harries” Carroll and Lachie Smart. These people each had important messages and success stories that they knew were important to share with and inspire young minds. As well as being interesting, the experience was a fun way to spend the day. Overall, it was a great educational experience and our thanks to Mrs Robinson for accompanying us and to Redlands for the opportunity. Below are some take-away quotes of the day chosen by us.

Liv Law

Josh Pyke – “Learn from others but trust your instincts.”

I chose this quote because it tells you that while you should learn from others and apply their ideas, you should also follow your own path and be your own person.

Fergus Kerr

Bronte Campbell – “I would always think back to the seven-year-old me and her dream to be at the Olympics.”

Bronte’s inspiration is her seven-year-old self whenever she is exhausted and wants to give up. And in the hard times, she says it’s good to look back on how far you have come.

Catherine Andrews, Lauren Rolfe and Tahlia Stone

Lachie Smart – Don’t change yourself for other people. Be yourself because everyone else is taken.” We chose these words because he explained that there is only one of you and you have to follow a path that makes you happy.

Seren Guha, Saskia Jelley and Mackenzie Willis

Josh Pyke – “Set an example through your actions.”

I think this really resonates with leadership because it is all about being a good role model not just telling others how to act.

Liv Law

Bronte Campbell – “I constantly ask myself: What did I do well? What could I change? Did I put enough effort in?

We think we can apply this to sport and schoolwork because there is always room for improvement and we can always keep learning, but we also should acknowledge what we did well.

Georgia Grace, Josh Svensson and Alex Taylor

Bronte Campbell – “What’s the problem? What’s the solution?”

I chose this quote because it shows what to do when something isn’t working, you find the problem, then you find the solution.

Otis Gait

Anthony ‘Harries’ Carroll – “If you know someone is struggling, don’t knock them down; help them.”

It’s important to remember to help people especially if they are having a rough time.

Leo Campbell and Zac Holgate

Save the Date: Monday 21 March: Cybersafety Webinar with Yasmin London from ySafe

We are delighted to invite Junior School parents to join us and our partner ySafe for a Cybersafety Webinar between 5.30pm – 6.30pm on Monday 21 March.

The session will be led by Yasmin London, who was very well received by parents, staff and students last year when she led workshops and seminars for the Junior School.

The webinar will focus on challenges and opportunities in the digital environment which students in Years 3-6 may encounter, what parents should know and how to support their children’s digital safety and wellbeing.

Yasmin will spend time with staff and students earlier in the day and if you have not already had a chance to do so, please explore Redlands’ Cybersafety Hub which was set up last year with ySafe.

Registration is essential and now open at this link as only registered parents will receive a Zoom link 24 hours prior to the event.

Student Agency in Action

On Monday, our eLearning Coordinator, Ms Anagnostu and the Yr 6 Technology Leaders hosted a workshop for Prep parents where these students were the teachers. Kate Rintoul, Sienna de Saxe, Aimee Kang, Audrey Kwok, Connor Price, Apollo Mangos, Eddie Williams and Hugo McDonald were great ambassadors as they demonstrated the power of student agency as they ably and confidently led parents through a hands-on workshop to experience how students use iPads as a tool for learning.

International Women’s Day

I share my gratitude and appreciation to all of our female staff and students this week as we acknowledged International Women’s Day and the significant impact and influence they, and others before you them, have had on our Redlands community right from its foundation in 1884, when the School was founded by Miss Arnold and Miss Liggins.

This year’s theme of #breakthebias highlighted the need for us to challenge bias. As we work towards a world free of stereotypes and discrimination that is diverse, equitable and inclusive, where difference is valued and celebrated, I know that one of our true strengths as a school is our diversity in every sense of the word and we all know of strong, diverse, talented, compassionate females here at Redlands.

Some classes enjoyed rich conversations about what a world free of bias look like and what Redlands look like free of bias?

Aimee Kang Art Success

We were delighted to hear of another fantastic visual art achievement by Aimee Kang (Yr 6). Aimee’s artwork ‘Brush of Colours’ was selected as a finalist at the recent Spencil Art Prize and Aimee was invited to attend the award ceremony last Friday.

Aimee’s entry was selected from over 1400 artworks submitted and below is Aimee’s description of her artwork.

Brush of Colours
Just a daub in the sky, the vivid colours of Gouldian Finches swoop in the air. On the far left is Sunspark, vibrant yellow dashes and twirls around the honey comb. As the older brother of Angel, (far right) Sunspark has the most responsibility and is always in a rush. It is Folia’s (centre) job to calm him down as his twin. Here they are mumbling (probably about magpies).

HICES Swimming Carnival

It was wonderful to get out to Sydney Olympic Pool to cheer on our Junior School swimming team as they competed in this year’s HICES Swimming Carnival. Mr Dunne and I were very proud of the team’s efforts to come 3rd overall with a number of personal bests achieved and a plethora of podium finishes for our Redlands swimmers. It was also great to see many parents there to support the team and from this, the following swimmers have been selected in the HICES swimming team to compete at the next level; the CIS Swimming Carnival.

Jack Carey, Lily Carey, Ami Dalla Pozza, Sasha Gordon, Sasha Grant, Zac Holgate, Milehna Meyer, Karen Preston, Jasmin Ramsay, Amelia Svensson, Joshua Svensson and Alex Taylor

Road Safety

I would be grateful to parents to remind their children, where applicable, to only cross Murdoch St at the designated crossing. As kindly reported by a Redlands parent, last week we had a near miss on Murdoch St with three boys running across Murdoch St between traffic. All three escaped being run over and seriously injured when a driver braked quickly but in the recent rain, this is even more risky. It would also be great if parents were able to role model this as well to support this important message.

Prep Morning Drop-off (Junior School siblings)

Please note that Junior School students who have younger siblings in the Prep School who use the drop-off zone should exit cars at the Prep drop-off area and head up to the Junior School from there.

This will alleviate added congestion for a second drop off and be a safer exit point for the children.

Holiday Code Camps

As a new initiative, we have partnered with Code Camp to host two three-day camps in the second week of April holiday break as per the flyer below. The camps are exclusively for Redlands students between the ages of 7-12 yrs and will be run by their staff who run our after school Drone Club in the Junior School. Please note the early bird discount code and that Creative Kids rebate vouchers can also be utilised.

Upcoming Parent Events

Staff and students are very excited to welcome our parents back into our classrooms for class tours conducted by your child followed by a home reading workshop. Have you ever wondered why the home reader sometimes is ‘easy’? Come along and find out the difference between how your child reads words on the page compared to how they comprehend, analyse, and adapt the text they are reading. These workshops will give you an insight into why certain readers are sent home and how you can help at home develop deeper understanding of how your child comprehends. Please email your teachers directly if you are attending.

Fostering Resilience – Prep School Webinar

Prep Music Information Session – Thursday 17 March 8.30am

A message from Katherine Moses, Head of Junior Campus Music K-6

Prep students have lots of exciting opportunities to be involved with Music at Redlands. Did you know that students learn a string instrument in Year 2? Or that we have a Prep Choir? To find out more about the start of your child’s Music journey, we would like to invite you to our Prep Music Orientation Session where Ms Katherine Moses (Head of Junior Campus Music) will be available to talk through the various options students have in music at school. It is also an opportunity for interested parents/carers to express an interest in becoming involved with the Friends of Music Group, who assist with various Music events and jobs throughout the year. To attend the Orientation Session next Thursday, bookings are essential through this Trybooking Link. Numbers are limited, but please join the waitlist should the allocation be exhausted.

Prep Fun Run – Postponed!

Unfortunately, the rain meant we had to postpone our Kindergarten and Year 1 Fun Run this week. We will be running the Fun Run now on Friday 18 March, the same day our Year 2 students will be running the Tunks Park Cross Country. In the meantime, keep your posters coming!  A great way to be creative, have fun and support your house.  You can create any poster you like.  We’ve had some amazing drawings, paintings as well as computer designs. If you’d prefer to colour in a house crest, please go to our Prep School Pulse page to find the templates.

Prep Technology information session

Rain, traffic, and cars on fire on the Harbour Bridge didn’t stop our Yr 6 Technology Leaders along with Yr 2 students and Mrs Anagnostu sharing skills and insight into what technology looks like in Prep by demonstrating their digital skills and 21st century learning capabilities.  Our Yr 6 Student Technology Leaders confidently guided Prep parents through hands-on iPad activities to experience how students use technology as a tool for learning in the classroom. Thank you to those parents who came and shared.

Lucy Hill Library

A message from Victoria Roberts

The Premier’s Reading Challenge website is now open for 2022 and you are now able to enter your books on your child’s online Reading Log. Please know that the PRC is a not compulsory and students can choose to be part of the Challenge. At the end of the day, we want our students to love reading and enjoy all sorts of books.

Any new students and all Kindergarten will have their login details affixed to the back page of their Student Planners this week. If your child is in Year 1 or Year 2, you can find their passwords in the back of last year’s planner. The password stays the same until Year 9. If, however you cannot find it, please send your child with their planner to the library and we will provide a new one.

Yr 2 Leaders

Car Line

Thank you to everyone for using the car line during the rain this week. It has certainly saved lots of wet feet and bags! Can I please encourage families who have children in both Prep and Junior School to use the carline facility. It makes your life easier with one drop off and reduces the congestion on Allister Street. We will be returning to normal opening time of 8am at Prep Reception and at the carpark line next week.

Food Allergies

We have a few students on the Junior Campus and in Redlands House who are at risk of an anaphylactic reaction if they come into contact with foods containing nuts. To minimise the risk of exposure for these students and to avoid the need for emergency treatment as much as possible, we ask you to be aware and support the following recommendations and to reinforce them with your children as well.

Students are asked not to share food with each other at any time. Students are asked not to bring to school nut-based spread or paste e.g., Peanut Butter, Nutella, or Tahini. Spreads such as fish paste or Vegemite are acceptable.

Students are asked not to bring any snack packs or containers containing nuts. Snack packs with dried fruit etc. are perfectly acceptable. Thank you very much for helping us keep all our students safe.

Summer Representative Sport

Touch Football

It was great to finally get some touch football played last weekend, with the break in the weather along with Barker College offering to host the fixtures allowing for some of our teams to get some games going ahead.

Our Senior A and Junior C boys travelled to Oakhill College and took on some strong Oakhill teams, both coming away with loses however the boys toiled well in both games and have continued to develop their Touch Football skills. All the Boys teams will be playing at Oakhill College this weekend, with the Senior A, Junior B and Junior C Boys playing double headers and the Junior A Boys taking on St Gregory’s College.

The Girls side of the draw had some mixed results, with the 1sts, 2nds, Junior C and Junior B teams all going down in some tough matches, with a highlight being the 1st Girls second half comeback against the defending premiers Barker College, The girls showed great fight and executed well in the second half to go down 3-7 (they actually won the second half 3-2).

This weekend there still might be some changes to the draw, so please ensure you check the Redlands Rhino on Friday to confirm fixtures.

We are also going to host a Touch Football morning on Saturday 19 March (Term 1, Week 7), this will double as a presentation morning with some fun games and activities included the much anticipate Coach vs Player’s match. We encourage all Touch Tootball players and parents to attend, with the coffee and BBQ canteen available.

Basketball

This Saturday will be the last round of Redlands Basketball for the season, the Redlands Rhino (fixtures) tab on Redlands Pulse is up to date with the fixtures for this Saturday. Wishing all teams the best of luck in their final round! We would like to thank all players and parents for their commitment to the Redlands Basketball program this season.

Rowing

Last weekend saw the rowing program head to Canberra for the double header regattas of ACT Head of the Lake and ACT Championships.

The Junior students lead the way on water with some outstanding racing from all crews. The day started with an impressive third place in the Yr 8 Boys Single Scull for Kieran Newman. The Yr 9 boys raced well with the a strong second place in the A final for our 1st crew while the 2nd crew finished third in the B final. The Yr 9 girls also represented well with the 1st crew finishing third in the A final while the 2nd crew had a convincing win in the C final.

The Yr 8 boys crews rose up the challenge with a strong win in the A final for the 1st crew and 2nd place in the D final for the 4th crew. It was our Yr 8 girls who dominated with some very impressive results such as the Girls 1st crew winning the A final while the 2nd crew finished in third place in the same final. The 3rd, 4th and 5th crews all finished in first, second and third place in the B final and the 6thcrew finishing second in the C final.

Our senior crews also achieved some significant results with the girls 2nd crew finishing second in their division while the Boys 2nd crew won their division with the Boys 3rd crew in third place.

The combined results saw Redlands take out the School Girl Points Score for the ACT Head of the Lake.

The following day at the ACT Championships also saw some great results, with the Yr 9 boys 1st crew improving their position to win the Men’s Under 16 Coxed Quad and Angus McInnes also winning the Men’s Under 15 single scull. The Yr 8 girls also were very impressive with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Yr 8 Single Scull to Isobel Campbell, Scarlett Cortes and Mila Osborn and another win for the Yr 8 Girls 1st crew in the Women’s Under 15 Coxed Quad.

These results are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of highlights with many other podium finishes not mentioned. This success is a reflection on the work the students and coaches have done to date but we eagerly look forward to the NSW Heads of the River regattas to come.

A huge thank you to the Friends of Rowing for assistance across the weekend and also to the parents of the Rowing students for the on water support across the weekend, you were the loudest group on the bank and its clear to see that you also had a great weekend!

Sailing

This Saturday the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in conjunction with Redlands will be hosting the Redlands Sailing Cup. The Redlands Sailing Cup is a school’s fleet racing regatta, where teams will race Elliott 7s keelboats and Pacers. Six teams will compete in the Elliott division and over 20 Teams will compete in the Pacers, with entries from the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Saint Ignatius College Riverview, Ascham and Pymble Ladies College, in addition to our own Redlands sailors. Racing will start at 10:30am and we welcome you all to visit the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron to support our teams.

Tennis

It was amazing to see so many students back on the courts on Saturday after a long-wet break! We were extremely lucky that the rain held off for a few days which allowed Redlands to get some great wins and more importantly, it gave students the opportunity to have a hit after so many cancellations.

This weekend marks the final competition round of the NSTA & TNB competitions before finals. Although the rain has impacted the students’ ability to train/play, it has still been a great season with plenty of amazing talent displayed.

A reminder for Round 5 (12th March) this weekend:

  • If you are unable to attend Saturday competition, please email Luke Jeffery by no later than 12pm on Friday.
  • Please check the draw and playing pairs list to see when/where/who you are playing.
  • Students need to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before start time.
  • For any questions, please email Luke Jeffery.

Please join me in wishing the Tennis students all the best for their upcoming matches this weekend!

Fitness Centre

As we have now entered the final week of Summer Rep. Sport Season and with our Winter Sport athletes beginning their prep for the 2022 ISA Season, the Fitness Centre is the perfect place to build strength, work on speed and improve endurance. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday–Friday and start promptly at 6.30am. We have had brilliant numbers across the sessions with 25 students attending yesterday morning.

This week marks the first week that the Fitness Centre will also be open to all students on Wednesday afternoon. This afternoon session will be targeted towards specific areas of development such as speed, strength and power, in preparation for the Winter season. For all our Winter Rep students this Wednesday afternoon session is a fantastic way to prepare for the upcoming season. Heading into the Winter season, there will be a new afternoon schedule as we aim to fill up the fitness centre with the sporting teams.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following:

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

Trainer of the Week

Our Week 6 Redlands Trainer of the Week award goes to the one and only Charlotte Horton (Yr 9). Charlotte has spent the past three weeks preparing for the start of ISA Netball and is absolutely smashing her training. Charlotte has made so much progress this term and has been consistently working hard week in and out. As Charlotte progresses further, there is no limit to what she can achieve, and we are excited to see how far she goes with it.

General Sport Information

Wet Weather

If training is cancelled due to wet weather, a notification will be posted on the Redlands Sport Twitter page (@RedlandsSport) in addition, an email will be sent out to both students and parents. This includes morning & afternoon training along with weekend fixtures.

Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Yr 8-12)
In order to limit student mixing indoors, Students in Yr 8-12 who are dismissed at the end of Period 5 are required to go directly home. Sport coaches and Redlands staff will supervise their COVID-safe departure.
Thursday afternoon sport – wet weather arrangements (Yr 7)
In the event that Yr 7 sport is cancelled on Thursday afternoon, students will remain at school until 3.10pm and participate in cohort-based activities.
Thursday afternoon – early departure (Yr 8-12)
As we attempt to limit student mixing indoors, there will be no classroom supervision for students who do not have any scheduled sport training on a Thursday afternoon. Therefore, students who do not have training on Thursday afternoon will have permission to leave early.

Fixtures

A friendly reminder that the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check this on Friday each week to ensure you have the most up to date fixture information.

Uniform

The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.

Game time and arrival times

Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of their scheduled fixture on Saturday (unless directed otherwise). Please ensure you know where you are playing and the likelihood of traffic on Saturday mornings to allow adequate time.

Attendance at Sport

Can we please draw your attention to the following communication process regarding absence from sport:

  1. Parents are required to send an email to the appropriate Sports administrator prior to missing any training session asking for them to be excused
  2. Any student unable to attenxd a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture
  3. Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures
  4. Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards & result in school disciplinary action

Please note that the first unexplained absence will result in a lunchtime detention with further unexplained absences escalating to a Friday afternoon Detention. Please refer to the Student Planner 2022 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.

HICES Swimming

Congratulations to our 28 swimmers who travelled out to Homebush to compete in the HICES Team selection carnival. It was a great day of swimming with some students obtaining or breaking their PB’s across several strokes. I was very proud of our efforts in the pool considering we did not have a meet prior and the team was selected on ‘paper’. Redlands came 3rd overall on points. My appreciation also extends to those families who attended and supported on the day but also to the Year 6 Captains who assisted our younger swimmers throughout the day.

We have 12 students how have qualified for the HICES team who will now swim at CIS Carnival. Congratulations to;

  • Jack Carey
  • Lily Carey
  • Ami Dalla Pozza
  • Sasha Gordon
  • Sasha Grant
  • Zac Holgate
  • Milehna Meyer
  • Karen Preston
  • Jasmine Rasmay
  • Amelia Svensson

Wet Weather update

With the wet weather having a significant impact on our Sport program specifically on the Wednesday a reminder that parents and carers can refer to the wet weather link that gets updated in real time. This is particularly important for those parents who pick up at the venues. As Junior School Reception is very busy on a Wednesday, enquiries about Sport may go to voicemail. Updates are shown in red font and the cut off time for cancellation is midday. On wet days parents are also asked to send any sport specific equipment in with their child and not make the decision prior to departure from home that sport is going to be cancelled. With the amount of sport that has been cancelled over the last two years contractors will always try to come up with an alternative program ahead of cancelling.

Cross Country Preparation

As per our engage notice sent out to all families the wet weather has meant we had to move our carnival from Tuesday 8 March to Friday 18 March. Students will run in either the championship run or the fun run. Both runs take place over the same course, both have ribbons for place getters.  To view your child’s event please select the following link;

2022 Class Listing- what event am I in?

You will see that I have also listed their entrant number, this needs to be written on their arm on race day so we can separate age groups in the computer as we have different age groups running against each other in the same grade. It is important that your child knows their entrant number as that is how results are generated when they cross the finish line.

Our new venue is Tunks Park Cammeray with the carnival now taking place Friday 18 March. A fly over of the course can be viewed here. 2022 Course Video. If you can manage to get down to Tunks park for a walk or run before the event that always settles nerves on race day. Parents and or carers are welcome to join us on this day but must remain off the course. You have received a detailed information package about the event last week.

2022 Summer Sport Team Lists

Please check these as there have been a few changes to teams over the last few days. Students have been told it is their responsibility to check the team lists, see if there any team changes that affect them and then cross check new times in the draw. That way it avoids students being moved teams turning up at the incorrect time and or venue.

Redlands Pulse Sport Page

Again another reminder to take the time to review the information on this page. I appreciate Term 1 is very busy given the number of events taking place but the information on this page will be helpful. The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.
