Issue 34 2019 - 07 Nov 2019

From the Principal

I wish to congratulate our Mock Trial team on their win in the Semi Finals of the NSW Law Society competition this week. With 200 teams competing across the whole of NSW, the team have been undefeated in all of their Trials this year. We wish them all the very best for the Grand Final to be held at the Mooting Court of Sydney University at the end of the month.

I also wish to congratulate Year 6 student Jesse Forrest who has won the UNSW ICAS Medal for English for achieving the highest score in NSW/ACT. This is the first time that the School has had a primary medal winner. Jesse will be presented with his medal at an official ceremony later this year. Jesse joined Redlands in Term 3 this year and we acknowledge his outstanding achievement, as well as the support from his teachers at his previous school in the USA.

Board Retreat

Our annual Board and Executive Retreat (including new Principal, Stephen Webber) at the end of last week was considered by all to be a great success. Our two world recognised Keynote Speakers provided us with data and ideas about the rapidly changing world in which we are living, and the aim of keeping the sessions at a high strategic level was achieved.

On Friday afternoon Mr Michael McQueen focused on the topic of Artificial Intelligence and the impact which this is likely to have on schools and on the workplace. Driverless cars can be predicted to progress from the current Level 3, which describe the elements that are in the cars which we drive today, to Level 5, when the cars fully drive themselves and manage to make roads safer for those in the vehicles as they automatically interact with other vehicles on the road, whilst passengers can read, sleep, eat a meal whilst the car is driving, watch a movie or a sports game. It was even suggested that children currently in their first years of school will never drive a car. Facial Recognition Technology is already being used for many purposes, some of which may give many people pause as its benefits may need to be balanced by its disadvantages. We all agreed that in the past jobs were about use of our muscles, today jobs are about use of our brains and futurists are predicting that jobs will be about heart. Michael spoke about the increasing importance of creativity as a skill. It was heartening when Michael said that the briefing which he was given as to Redlands’ approach to teaching and learning seemed to be on a promising track to deal with the world of the future. It was agreed that schools must not only be about academic learning but must also encourage relationships, compassion and humanity. Robots are unlikely to be able to replace these essentially human elements.

On Saturday morning Mark McCrindle addressed the future of education. We asked him to share with us data that his research team has compiled relating to the generations that are alive today: Builders, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, Gen Z and now Gen Alpha. Exploring this topic helped us to test what we mean when we are talking about teaching our students to be “life-ready”. We discussed the growing expectation that schools are one of the remaining institutions that provide a sense and experience of being part of a social community. Cultural diversity was another very interesting topic: we learnt that 29% of Australians today were born overseas; a percentage double that of the USA and the UK and 1/3 higher than Canada and New Zealand. We discussed the rise of parent engagement in their children’s schooling and talked about the opportunities and the challenges for schools in this regard. Related to this was the importance for schools to engage students in their learning (a fundamental goal for Redlands in its becoming a culture of thinking and learning).

It was an excited mood in the room when the Retreat ended. Many ideas had been raised and explored and the conversations are sure to guide further planning and development in Redlands vibrant culture and programs.

Year Group Reunions

Class of 1979 – 40 Years Reunion

This reunion was held last Friday, as we welcomed 11 alumnae, Miss Gail Stewart, former Deputy Headmistress, and Dr Jennifer Farrell, President of Redlanders Association. The girls really enjoyed reconnecting with one another, some of whom haven’t seen each other since they walked through the School gates for the last time, 40 years ago! This was at the time when Redlands started its transformation from girls only to coeducational.

Class of 2009 – 10 Year Reunion

We look forward to welcoming the Class of 2009 to celebrate 10 years since their graduation and hearing about their life journeys since leaving Redlands.

This cohort graduated under Dr Lennox as Principal, whilst the Science block and the Liggins Atrium were newly opened, providing a wonderful addition to their educational experience.

Family Bush Dance

The Bush Dance was an amazing night with just under 500 people in attendance. It couldn’t have happened without our fabulous Redlands community and our parent volunteers, also our Facilities team led by Rod who assisted with our set up and cleaned the campus ready for school on Monday.

The Outback Band was phenomenal calling all the dance moves and it was amazing to see parents and children learning and mastering the dances during the night. A big thank you to all involved!

Forward Thinking

I had the great pleasure of attending the Executive and Board Retreat over the weekend as we focused on the future strategic design and direction for Redlands. I have often said that Redlands, throughout its illustrious history, has been a school that is willing to be responsive to the changing educational landscape and I am confident that moving forward it will continue this approach. We are excited to have our New Learning Hub coming online next year which will create contemporary learning and teaching spaces for our students and teachers and allow us to even better develop life-readiness in our students.

Mock Trial

Yesterday our Mock Trial team consisting of Yr 12 students, Aleisha Lawrence, Renata Ferreira, Madeleine Howard, Emily Colvin, Stephanie Larcos and Leilani Heath, competed in the Semi Finals of the NSW Mock Trial Competition against Chevalier. It was a tightly contested case which ended in a draw; however, the Redlands team won the “tie-breaker” by successfully arguing a legal question put forward by the presiding magistrate. This result means the Redlands team will compete in the finals of the NSW Mock Trial Competition (a competition that commenced with 200 teams across the state) at the Mooting Court of Sydney University on Thursday 28 November against Loreto Kirribilli. This is a wonderful result for the team and we wish them all the best in the Grand Final. I would like to especially acknowledge Ms Rebecca Mountain for all of her efforts in coaching the team this year. (Pictured at top)

Innovative Design and Textiles Exhibition

Last night we held our Innovative Design and Textiles Exhibition in the John Roberts Centre. Yr 12 HSC Major Works from Design and Technology and Textiles were on display, as well as other works from Yr 10 and 11 Innovative Design and Textiles classes. It was wonderful to see the creativity and application of our students on display this week and from what I have seen, some of these students have some exciting career opportunities in these fields in the not so distant future.

Speech Night

Wednesday 4 December is a student free day at the Secondary School; however, Speech Night is compulsory for all students in Yrs 7-11 that evening. Further details of student arrival times for rehearsals and the event itself will be published in Note Day and communicated to all Secondary School parents over the next few weeks. We look forward to our whole School community coming together on this special evening.

Remembrance Day

As most people are well aware, 11 November is a special day as we celebrate the armistice which signalled the end of World War I. We will commemorate Remembrance Day as a Secondary School community with a minute’s silence during Tutor Period at 11am.

Chaplain

Recently I attended a lecture on Hope. It was given by a PhD candidate in Psychology Liesa Aiken who is preparing her thesis on hope. This was both fascinating and encouraging as hope is one of those intangible attributes that, as humans, we need and have a deep hunger for. Yet even defining hope is difficult. Hope is not just wishful thinking nor is it not just self-confidence. Hope cannot just be a reliance on our past successes as many of us have significant past failures. Real hope is more: a dream is not enough, work is not enough.

Christian hope is focused on the object of our hope, what we hope in must have substance not just what we hope for. For the Christian it is not just the vision or dream that we look forward to, it is the one who has the power to bring that dream to reality.

Christians have an unshakeable hope: expectation that the future holds better based on the nature and revelation of the God of the bible. This hope looks forward to the new creation where wounds are healed and the brokenness of this world is transformed by the almighty God. This is a hope of healing, harmony, peace and unspeakable joy.

This is what we celebrate at Christmas: the hope that the birth of a child in 4 BCE proclaims. Christian hope looks back to how God intervened in history to fulfil his promises. He promised a virgin birth of a Messiah who would reveal the very nature of God, die for our sins and conquer death by rising from the dead. As we look back in awe we can confidently look forward in hope to the day that the God renews all things.

Parents Who Pray

This is an invitation to parents who would like to support the school community through prayer. We gather to bring before God our school, students, staff, Executive, parents and Board. A particular focus will be on praying for our Yr 12 students as they face final examinations and thanksgiving for the many blessings our school has received this year. We will gather on Wednesday 13 November in B.1.1 commencing at 8.30am and finishing at 9.15am.

Service and Social Engagement

Toys ‘n’ Tucker

As you turn your thinking towards preparing for Christmas, please give some consideration to adding to your christmas shopping list a contribution towards the Redlands Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker drive. Anglicare aim to share the joy of Christmas with people in need. Throughout November, we will be seeking donations through Tutor Groups for a range of items on the shopping list below. Next time you are at the supermarket, consider picking up something extra to bring in for the collection. Nothing needs to be wrapped as all items will be sent to Angliacare who will then make up family specific boxes to be distributed. Your donations will mean that another family will have some of the Christmas cheer which we may take for granted.

Assistance Dogs Australia

Next week Yr 7 are hosting Assistance Dogs where we will be meeting an experienced service dog and seeing examples of the range skills the extensive training program develops. We will also meet some service dogs in training. They are very enthusiastic and are learning to be calm and disciplined.

Yr 7 are hoping to raise funds to make a financial contribution to the cost of raising and training an Assistance puppy. They have a range of fundraising activities planned and will be talking to all of the other Year Groups about how to get involved. If you would like to contribute you can make a donation here.

Yr 12 Privileges

On Wednesday, students were given their Yr 12 privileges. With these privileges, the School expects all students to demonstrate the maturity and trust that comes with those extra freedoms being afforded to them. As Mr Corcoran and I have mentioned numerous times to all students, if they cannot be trusted and follow our expectations then these Yr 12 privileges may be taken away.

Mock Trial Team

Congratulations to Emily Colvin, Renata Ferreira, Leilani Heath, Madeleine Howard, Aleisha Lawrence and Stephanie Larcos who won their Mock Trial Semi Final by one point. They had some very strong competition but still managed to secure the win late in the Trial. They will now square off in the Grand Final held at the Mooting Court at Sydney University.

Yr 10 Music Soiree

Monday afternoon proved a wonderful opportunity to witness our very talented Elective Music students perform in the Yr 10 Music Showcase held in the John Roberts Centre.

Students performed individually and in small groups, and there were a rich array of genres and styles presented. We warmly congratulate Piper Allen, Beatrix Blasco, Joshua Colleran, Maddison Hunt, Sophia Justice, Scarlett Keay, Kate Keller, Alex Kim, Jasmine Lazzarotto, Xavier Little, Lucy McLaren, Theo Mirrlees-Black, Julia Parker, Jameson Prescott, Annabelle Swan, Alexander Verschoor, Lauren Weaver and William Wickham for their performances.

BurnBright Youth Mental Health Forum – Student Reflection

On Tuesday 5 November, Hunter Auld, Andrew Butler, Anna Ivanovic, Sophia Justice, Ross Psaroulis and Lauren Wong were given the opportunity to attend the BurnBright Youth Mental Health Forum. This event featured perspectives from the North Shore Member of Parliament – Felicity Wilson, as well as a panel of speakers in the youth space including Psychologists Mitch Wallis and Elizabeth Goh, Dr Suzy Green and Motivational Speaker, Matt Purcell. The speakers provided an insight into the many dimensions of youth mental health.

The day began with Mitch Wallis and Elizabeth Goh who shared their personal experiences with mental health issues and other stories, as well as providing strategies which young people could implement in their daily lives such as mindfulness, active listening and proactivity. One of the most profound takeaways was our role in helping others deal with their own internal struggles. Mitch Wallis placed particular emphasis on listening and letting people be heard instead of providing advice and suggestions. His perspective was to ask questions and empathise instead of proposing solutions.

During the last session of the day, students engaged in group sessions which involved each school group putting together a pitch/proposal for an activity to be implemented within their school. The Redlands group created a Peer Support proposal/initiative called The Movement for Mental Health Program which aimed to make students proactive when approaching Youth Mental Health issues. The program launch may consist of a mufti day which could occur during Term 1, 2020, with funds raised going to Headspace, as well as a once a week Pastoral activity undertaken by all Tutor Groups from all Year Groups, involving an anonymous Peak and Pit exercise which would involve students anonymously recording their highs and lows in a journal or on sticky notes which could then be discussed in small groups. By engaging in such initiatives, hopefully any stigma surrounding youth mental health might be removed and students would be encouraged to discuss their social and emotional problems.

A big thankyou to Ms Matthews and Mr Walker for giving us this opportunity.

News and Achievements
  • Well done to the following students for successfully completing their 2019 AMEB Music exam: Elena Parker (Horn 2nd Grade), Patrick Walker (Saxophone for Leisure 4th Grade), Helena Dracakis (Singing for Leisure 4th Grade), Alana Mansfield (Saxophone 4th Grade), Jamison Houchell (Trombone 4th Grade).
  • A belated congratulations to Emelie Bessell and Oliver Kesby for making the Redlands 1sts Basketball teams.
Risky Physical Behaviour

Redlands has a hands-off and no tolerance policy for behaviour that could reasonably be anticipated to lead to personal injury – this includes horseplay, practical jokes and rowdiness. Some Yr 8 students have been engaging in risky physical behaviour during break times (this does not include engaging in regular approved ball games). Expectations have been made explicitly clear to students. Staff are being vigilant in monitoring behaviour. Any physical behaviour which places a student/s at risk will result in an immediate lunch detention and the student of concern being removed from the area of play. To allow students more opportunity to burn off energy, we have allocated a weekly Tutor session for additional outdoor time (see Note Day Term 4, Week 3).

Winter School 2020

Even though summer is about to hit us, it is time to get ready for Winter School 2020. In our historic 25th year of operation, this is an experience not to be missed. This year we are getting started early to help everyone plan ahead for the year to come. The Winter School Information Night will be held in Redlands Hall at 6.00pm on Monday 18 November. Applications open on Monday 11 November. The online application form and information about Winter School can be found on Redlands Pulse

Toys ’n’ Tucker

This year Redlands is coming together and sharing the Christmas joy with people in need by collecting for Toys ‘n’ Tucker. We are seeking unwrapped donations of non-perishable Christmas food items and toys. All students are encouraged to bring in something to contribute. Items will be collected during Tutor Time throughout Term 4. A list of suitable donation items can be found here.

After Tests and Exams

We congratulate students on a successful examination week. How students approach post examinations can be just as important as examination preparation. To assist you in supporting your child through this process, here is some advice provided to students:

When the test is returned in class:

  • Check your marks carefully.
  • Look at the things you got right and did well.
  • Now look at the questions you got wrong and see if you understand what you did incorrectly and how to do it properly.
  • Ask your teacher about anything you didn’t understand or can’t work out.

The night when you get home:

File your test away with your notes from this topic or in a folder where you keep past tests. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What sections do I need to improve in and why?
  • What had I forgotten that I needed to review more in-depth?
  • Are there particular types of questions (eg multiple choice) that I am weak on?
  • Are there sections of the course I need to review and re-learn?
  • Are there questions I still need to ask for help on as I don’t know what I’ve done wrong?
  • What worked well in my preparation for this subject?
  • What changes should I make when preparing for this subject?
  • Was the way I studied effective?
  • Did I do enough preparation for this test?
  • What examination techniques do I need to improve?
  • What strategy did I use in the way I approached the examination? Was it effective? What changes do I need to make to the techniques I use in examinations?

The aim is to keep trying to improve on your performance and keep looking for ways to learn from the experience. If you didn’t do as well as you liked, what was the reason for this?

  • I didn’t do enough study
  • I had exam nerves on the day
  • I had missed some of the work and didn’t catch up
  • I didn’t study effectively
  • My exam technique was not very good
  • I spent too long on some questions and not enough on others
  • I studied the wrong things
  • I should have done more actual practice not just reading
  • I ran out of time in my study time

Within a week or so after the test:

  • If you did a particular section really badly, redo it and ask your teacher to have a look and see if you have improved.
  • Rewrite and resubmit essay questions you did poorly in.
  • Update all your study notes and summaries with things you need to remember for next time based on what you learnt from the exam.
  • Write a list of what you need to remember for next time.
  • Check you really understand the things you got wrong. Don’t just leave them as they will come back to haunt you one day! Instead, ask your teacher to help you understand them.
  • Make a list of the topic areas you are weak on or will need to review again. Many of the subsequent topics you study will build upon these so it is important that you build a solid foundation of knowledge.
  • Talk with your teacher about what you could do to improve.

NSW Schools Vaccination Program

The Northern Sydney Public Health Unit will be holding a NSW Schools Vaccination Program clinic on Tuesday 12 November to administer dose two of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) to Yr 7 students who received the first dose earlier this year in March. Parents are not required to complete any further documentation for students receiving dose two. Please ensure your child has had a good breakfast on the morning of the vaccination. A Record of Vaccination card will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination. Students who commence HPV vaccinations in school clinics in Yr 7, but do not complete the course during the school year, may be offered catch-up doses at school in Yr 8. Click here for further information and translated copies of the Vaccination Information Kits.

Exams

Congratulations to all Yr 7 students on a fantastic first round of Yearly Examinations. Students came prepared each morning with all of their materials. They took the experience seriously and understood the expectations of the exams. As examinations are returned to students over the next few weeks, we strongly encourage students to use their feedback for further improvement. As a cohort, we are focusing on four steps:

  1. Check marks carefully
  2. Celebrate correctly answered questions
  3. Learn the content from incorrectly answered questions
  4. Ask the teacher for further clarification with things that are not understood
This Week

Students participated in two full days of Surf Education at Long Reef Beach. It was a wonderful way to ease back into classes after the exam block and a great chance for students to learn some life skills while enjoying time together outdoors.

Several Yr 7 students are participating in Service opportunities throughout the remainder of term. Students are raising money and spreading awareness for Assistance Dogs Australia and Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker.

For Assistance Dogs Australia, there will be several events students can participate in and donate by making a gold coin donation.  For Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker, the key message is ‘Sharing the Christmas joy by making a small contribution’.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

Yr 4 STEAM Day

Last Friday, our Yr 4 cohort enjoyed some rich experiential learning as they were fully engaged in a range of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) activities, brilliantly organised by our eLearning Coordinator, Mrs Winrow.

I was able to spend some time with the classes and with a range of external and internal facilitators, the obvious excitement and engagement of the students was plain to see as they rotated through each session as outlined below:

  • Students had the opportunity to see how drones are used to detect sharks in Australian waters and then learnt how to code and fly drones themselves on a much smaller scale.
  • Students also took part in an exploratory hands-on Earth Science workshop investigating geological processes and land forms. During this session, the students explored earthquakes and volcanoes, plate tectonics and faultlines, rock types, erosion and soil classification.
  • Mrs Winrow led the next session connecting Engineering and Maths as the students had to design and create a mechanical arm and develop their sense of the impact of mechanical engineering in our world. Using littleBits technology to build the arm, the students then practised throwing a ball at a target using the mechanical arm they had built.
  • The final session was led by our Visual Arts teacher, Ms Reinhold, where the students created shoe designs with the theme of Take the Coast Inland. These shoes have now been donated to Warlawurru Catholic School, an Indigenous school who Mrs Winrow had connected us to partner with. There has also been a second hand sports shoe drive that this project worked alongside and we thank parents who have been able to support this opportunity.

Thank you to our many teachers and facilitators who made the day one that enabled the students to also see the real-world applicability of the STEAM subjects and their interconnectedness. I know our Yr 4 teachers also valued this time to further learn and connect with and see their students’ thinking through the day.

2020 Student Leadership Nominations

This week, our Yr 6 2020 student leadership nominations commenced for our current Yr 5 cohort, ahead of their transition into Yr 6 and the Junior School student leadership roles that come with this move. I am grateful to Ms Francis and her team for the meticulous planning and organisation of the day which it was a pleasure to witness and be part of.

With candidates encouraging and supporting one another, I was both heartened and proud to hear that more than 82% of the cohort self-nominated for at least one of the fourteen leadership positions (listed below); a reflection of the safe, encouraging and supportive environment created by the Yr 5 teachers and the group as a whole.

  • Junior School Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • Arts Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • Sports Captains (one boy and one girl)
  • House Captains (one boy and one girl per House – 8 in total)

As part of the process, students articulately heard from some of the present Junior School student leaders who were able to share their experiences as well as another student in Yr 6 who has shown great leadership this year without necessarily having a badge; an important message for all students to hear too. Yr 5 also had a chance to ask them questions, which was clearly a helpful exercise.

Cameron Brown from Explore, Discover Act, who has led student leadership development workshops with Yr 5 over the year, also sent a video to the group summarising the learning he has done with them throughout the year on leadership and wished them well on the next step in their leadership journey.

The Yr 5 teachers and I then provided the students with more specific information about the requirements of each role and the School’s expectations of its leaders.

Looking around at the students, we have no shortage of potential school leaders who I know would be very capable representatives of the student body in 2020. Yr 5 students, as well as teachers who know them, will now have the opportunity to vote and then these captains will be formally announced for the first time at Speech Day on the last day of this term by Dr Lennox and myself.

Junior Campus Bush Dance

Last Saturday, I joined nearly 500 members of our community at our biennial Bush Dance, superbly organised by Prep parent, Danielle Bird, and her team of volunteers. Supported also by the RPFA, the event was a wonderful wholesome family fun event and our returning visitors, The Outback Band, did another exceptional job of calling all the dances for everyone to enjoy.

As Danielle also mentioned to me, the event “simply couldn’t have happened without our fabulous Redlands community and parent volunteers”. This is so true and I extend my warm appreciation and gratitude to parent volunteers who set up, packed away, ran the barbecue, ran drinks stalls and collected tickets to name but a few of the many roles. I also thank our Redlands Facilities team for their often hidden work behind the scenes.

2020 Junior School Student Class Placements

Junior School staffing for 2020 will be finalised shortly and will be communicated in Note Day towards the end of term. We continue to have the same number of classes in each Year Group as listed below:

Yr 3:               4 classes
Yr 4:               4 classes
Yr 5:               5 classes
Yr 6:               5 classes

Class teachers will undertake the process of class formations for 2020 towards the end of this term once we have finalised the composition and balance of each Year Group team of teachers. Past experience has shown that the meticulous and professional approach we take ensures the optimum learning environment for each student.

Class placements are organised by the teaching staff who see and teach these students each and every day and hence, know the students best in the context of the classroom learning environment, taking particular account of the following factors:

  • the individual learning, social and emotional needs of each child
  • knowledge of the different teaching styles of teachers in the next year group
  • friendships of students where this has a positive impact on their learning (students are also involved in this step)
  • ability levels to ensure an even spread of ability levels across each class
  • an aim to balance gender in each class, as best possible

Please understand that it is not possible to request a specific teacher for your child as this would set a precedence that is neither sustainable nor fair to all families. Please also note that younger siblings will not necessarily be placed with the same class teacher as older siblings as invariably, siblings can be very different in both their learning preference and their personal traits.

A significant amount of time, professional dialogue and thought goes into this important operational process to aim to match each individual student with the right teacher and peers and our Dean of Students, Counsellors and I also take part in this process with our additional knowledge of students.

Once Year Groups have finalised these, there will be a comprehensive face-to-face handover of knowledge between teaching staff before the start of Term 1, 2020, to ensure that teachers have as much information as possible ahead of next year. These class lists are then prominently displayed on the first day of the new school year but we also have individual student timetables up on the portal a day or two before the start of term so that parents have access to see who their child’s class teacher will be before the start of the 2020 academic year.

I hope this summary clarifies the detailed process that will take place later this term in this very important part of our preparation for 2020.

Bush Dance

It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon for the bi-annual K-6 Bush Dance held last Saturday afternoon with an extraordinary 500 people dancing, socialising and having fun. The event was truly authentic with hay bales filling Dunnet Hall and a brilliant bush band. Our Redlands community spirit was clearly evident, and thanks must go to Preparatory School parent, Danielle Bird, who led and organised this event with a team of dedicated parents. We sincerely appreciated the parents who helped with the set-up and clean-up, decorations, slushie machine and cooking the sausages. Thank you for giving the children another wonderful experience to remember.

Mr Webber Meets Prep School

Last week, there were some very excited Prep students who were introduced to 2020 Principal, Mr Stephen Webber. Mr Webber visited Redlands House and Prep classes on Wednesday, joining in with music lessons, art activities and playground games. The students in Kindy Orange asked Mr Webber some interesting questions which he answered with patience and good grace.

 “Where did you come from?”
“Will the rules change at Redlands when you come?”
“What’s your job now?”

Mr Webber’s week-long visit to Redlands culminated in a weekend Executive and Board Retreat where we heard from futuristic speakers, Mark McCrindle and Michael McQueen. Their insights into the rapidly changing world was captivating and left all the educators in the room filled with possibility and wonder for the years ahead.

Yr 1 Celebrations

This term the Yr 1 students are learning about different celebrations from around the world as part of their Units of Inquiry. We were delighted to invite families into the classroom to discuss a celebration that they have within their family and explain the cultural significance. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to hear about different traditions and to the celebrate the diversity within our community. We have been lucky enough to have Diwali, Chinese New Year, Thanksgiving, Holi, Halloween, Greek Easter, Hanukkah and Greek naming day. When the students hear from members of our school community, they feel a sense of connection and warmth that is not possible through books or the internet. Thank you to all the parents who have so willingly participated.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Sophia Moriarty (Two Crimson), who placed second in her first eisteddfod at Castle Hill in the U8yo Jazz Specially Restricted last Sunday. Sophia overcame some nerves and danced as a soloist for the first time, performing beautifully and was announced best of all 12 performers. Sophia’s dedication to her dancing is to be commended, starting dance lessons in Kindergarten at Redlands. A sincere thank you to Ms Shannon, Sophia’s Dance teacher at Redlands who prepared Sophia for this competition. If you would like more information on Dance at Redlands, please visit Redlands Pulse.

Weekly Results

Basketball

Round 2 saw some exceptional results across many of our teams. Our Dunnet Hall round was a great success, with an impressive 48-16 win over Central Coast in the Junior A Girls. This was followed by the 17A Boys who had a great contest against Oakhill, until Oakhill managed to run away with the game in the final minutes. The 1sts Girls were up against Barker, with some great team work and impressive passages of play finishing with a 73-47 win. The 1sts Boys were the final Dunnet Hall game of the day, and in a very high scoring battle against Oakhill, finished with a 106-72 win.

We saw three great wins in our other Opens Boys teams: 2nds defeated St Pius by eight points, the 3rds beat Oakhill Blue and the 4ths defeated Redlands 17D. The 17Bs had our only win from their age group in Round 2, with a 42-29 win over St Pius C, while the 17C and 17D put up a strong fight against Chevalier B and Redlands 4ths respectively. The 15As had another convincing 30 point win over Oakhill B, while 15B, C and D all followed up with wins, showing that we have a very strong Basketball cohort in this age group. With injury and illness both playing a role, the 14As finished on a 9 point loss against Oakhill and 14B had a tough game against a strong St Pius team. There were four wins in the 13s: 13A, B, C and E. The 13D team had a very close game against St Pat’s who unfortunately had momentum and a one point lead at the final siren.

The 2nds Girls were up against Barker 2nds. A fierce contest saw some great teamwork by our girls, finishing with a four point win. The Inter A and Inter B Girls played off against each other in what was a great spirited game that finished with the Inter A team on top. The Inter Cs played a strong SACS A team, while the Junior Bs also played SACS A with both teams playing hard but losing the contest. The Junior Cs played against CCGS and lost by six in what was a close game throughout.

Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Fitness Centre will only be open across Monday and Wednesday morning next week due to staff commitments with Yr 10 Camp. Both sessions will still run from the usual time of 6.30 – 7.30am.

Both afternoon Rowing sessions in the Fitness Centre will proceed as normal.

Indoor Hockey

Congratulations to Jess Van Extel (Yr 7) and Freya Gait (Yr 8) who competed in Orange at the State Indoor Hockey Championships over the weekend and then the week before at the Hunter Cup. Their Northern Sydney and Beaches team played other Rep teams from all over NSW. They won the Hunter Cup Div 1 and played well in Orange, only just missing out on a Semi Final place.

Rowing

This weekend will see the Rowing program attend its first regatta being the Hunter Valley Grammar School Regatta at Berry Park. Details have been emailed to all families and students but are also available on Redlands Pulse. Students will depart from Mosman Rowing Club on the school bus and return for boat unloading after the regatta. The Friends of Rowing group will be providing pizzas for students following boat unloading.

New Parents Meet-Up

Friends of Rowing would like to invite any parents new to the Rowing program this year to a welcome and information sharing event prior to the return of the rowers from Newcastle.

  • Saturday 9 November
  • 6.30pm
  • Redlands Boatshed located at Mosman Rowing Club
  • Light food will be served and you are welcome to bring your own drinks

With the Rowing season almost half-way through and the competition phase about to begin in earnest, this is an opportunity for new parents to share their experiences so far, ask any questions that have arisen and to meet a few of the other parents. This will be a low-key informal event.

The event is open to any parents, but is aimed at those new to the program. It will be hosted by Tom Richardson and the Friends of Rowing Committee.

Sailing

With less than two weeks to the inaugural Redlands Cup at RSYS, our sailors have been training hard on both Elliott 7s keelboats and the Pacer dinghies. In the Elliott 7s, the three mixed teams have been focusing on developing their fleet racing skills and during Saturday’s training session, Olly Noakes (Yr 8) won both of the practice races. In the Pacers, the squad has grown to 12 sailors who have just concluded their training block with symmetrical spinnakers. During the practices races for Pacers, Ben Harrington (Yr 9) and Jack Murray (Yr 9) stormed ahead of the fleet winning both their races. The Redlands Cup will be held on 16 November on Sydney Harbour against Cranbrook.

Tennis

With many teams playing at home this week, there was a great atmosphere at both venues. It was excellent to see students being their best self on the tennis court, supporting their teammates and using each point, game or set as a learning experience. During the 8.00am timeslot, students were challenged by the St Pius teams. These Redlands students are still mastering their serve and used their time on court this week to improve their match play skills. During the 10.00am timeslot, there was a number of strong performances with wins from teams 1, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12 and 13.

Just a friendly reminder, Tennis is a Representative Sport. This means that players need to be 100% committed to all trainings and matches.

Touch Football

Another great week was played last week with some close games across all the divisions. Our 1sts had a great hit out against a much-improved Scots All Saints College, unfortunately going down 3-5. Our 2nds looked to continue their run of form against St Andrew’s, in what was a nail biter, the girls came away with a 2-2 draw. Our 3rds looked to improve on last weeks results, but unfortunately went down 2-3. Our Senior 4ths had a bye last week but will be looking for a strong hit out against Oxley College this weekend.

Our Juniors have been showing great improvements, with our Junior A and B teams having strong wins against Scots All Saints College 5-3 and 5-2 respectively. Our Junior C teams showed great spirit, despite some players being ill during the week, holding on for a 2-2 draw against St Andrew’s. Our Junior D team also had some great improvements, although they went down 1-4 to St Andrew’s.

This week see’s our 1sts, 2nds and 3rds play at home to Barker College. Junior A are home to Blue Mountains Grammar, our Junior B team at home to St Andrew’s, whilst our Senior 4ths and Junior C teams travel to Oxley College and our Junior Ds travel to Chevalier College. Games times and fields can be found on the Redland Rhino.

Basketball

IPSHA Mixed Basketball

Our Yrs 5 and 6 teams had a great weekend with some strong performances against Barker. Our A team were dominant, sharing the point scoring around across the team and playing an unrelenting brand of defence. Charles Hargrave showed that all his hard work has begun to pay off, his 13 points in the B match led the team to a 12 point win.

Charlotte Humphreys led the C team with a game high of ten points, but the team couldn’t get past the strong Barker B, who prevailed by just two points. Another new basketballer, Lachlan Arici, led his D team to a victory with a swag of points.

Junior basketballers continue to impress. I’ve had the pleasure of guest coaching the A and B teams over recent weeks and have loved their heart and hussle. The B team, giving away height and physicality, played well to stay with the Mosman team. Our A team  battled hard for a well deserved draw in a really evenly matched contest. Two composed free throws, to go ahead inside the last minute, were not quite enough as Mosman finished scoring – tying up the match with just seconds left. Exciting stuff.

Girls Basketball

Girls Basketball matches will this week take on a new match format with games being shifted to 4 x 10 minute quarters. The additional breaks add just a few minutes to the overall match time but will give our coaches and teams a greater opportunity to provide coaching feedback and will closer reflect the WNBL.

Our Yr 5 girls are learning some really valuable lessons. Playing in a very strong A grade competition. The girls are well and truly in the matches physically, but need to work on the concentration, focus and intensity right to the end of the match. After leading the whole way in a tight contest, they conceded a turnover and basket with just seconds to go to drop the game by just a point.

Yr 6 Red team, made up of Yrs 5 and 6 girls, showed their improving ability to score last week, bagging 14 points in their season high tally and showed some good signs around aggressive rebounding.

Cricket

The first cricket match on the Redlands Junior Campus Oval was action packed and really entertaining. The slower pitch means bowlers are rewarded for full bowling and batsmen need sound straight back technique. Our boys fielded well, taking plenty of catches and bowling strongly.

Tennis

Callum Zhu and Nathan Lu continue to lead from the front with our Tennis team. Ranked 1 and 2, Callum and Nathan have formed a dynamic duo in doubles and have translated that form into their singles. Leonardo Vaccarezza and Zoe Halliday also impressed with their singles play and helped the Redlands team to a really tight victory, 36 games to 32.

IPSHA Gymnastics

Redlands had four teams compete at IPSHA Gymnastics on Wednesday 31 October. The Women’s Level 1 team had some great performances and finished in 2nd place. Our boys team also finished in a very close 2nd and got some positive coaching and feedback from the very experienced athlete judges. Our Level 2 girls scored highly with all scores above 8.5 for each apparatus placing them 6th against some strong girl’s schools. Ella Sanger-Larsson (Yr 4) competed as an individual in the Level 4 team event and also finished a very worthy 6th. For many of these students it was their first time competing in a gymnastics event, there was a good mix of nerves and excitement which allowed for some fantastic routines. Congratulations!

NSWCIS Athletics

Good luck to our Junior Boys 4 x 100m relay team, Joel Daily, Daniel Benoleil, Jeffrey Benoleil and Ash Corn, who are off to represent NSWCIS at the NSWPSSA Athletics Championships today. The boys have been lightning fast in qualifying for this State Championships and have been refining their baton changes.

Joel has also qualified individually in the 100m and Long Jump.

Music Elective Soirée Concert

The Music Department would like to commend all musicians from the Yr 10 Music Elective who presented repertoire for assessment at the Soirée Concerts throughout this past week. The students were very well-prepared with both their solo repertoire and self-devised ensemble performances, and confidently presented in front of family and friends in the Edwards Auditorium. Designed as a student led event, we commend both classes on their developing skills as musicians as well as various other roles including compering, sound operation, lighting and stage management. The opportunities of working in a purpose-built performance facility like the Edwards Auditorium is certainly providing students with real life experiences in developing and delivering a polished music concert.

Thank you to our class teachers Mr Castelli, Mr Kuilenburg and Mr Owen for their wonderful guidance and mentoring of the students in the Yr 10 Music Elective classes throughout this year. Thanks is also extended to our exceptional accompanists, Mr Li and Mr Wade, who have worked with the students throughout the year.

Advanced and Extension Ensembles Auditions 2020

Auditions for students wishing to move into the Advanced and/or Extension Music Ensemble program, will be able to audition on Monday 18 November and Wednesday 20 November (Week 6). Students currently enrolled in Advanced and Extension Ensembles are not required to re-audition. Please contact the Secondary School Music Office should you require any further information.

Secondary Music Ensembles

With all student examinations close to finishing, attendance at all Music Ensemble rehearsals over the coming weeks is essential in the lead up to End of Year performances. Absence due to camp and/or illness will be the only excepted reason for non-attendance. It is essential that you advise the Secondary School Music Office if you are unable to attend any rehearsal with a note/email from your parent/guardian. This leave will then be discussed and approved by the Coordinator of Music.
