Issue 19 2021 - 17 Jun 2021

From the Principal

One of the great privileges of school leadership is that you get the opportunity to regularly speak to students and staff on a range of topics that you value.

Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed speaking at Junior School assembly this week and even dancing with the staff at the Preparatory School assembly, for my last Note Day article this term I thought I would share some key aspects of my address to the Secondary School End of Term assemblies.

Getting the Strength to Carry On

In his book Something to Smile About, Zig Ziglar tells the story of Steve who was hiking through the mountains when a blinding storm enveloped the area in a thick covering of snow. Steve’s hands and feet grew numb as he wandered through the storm in search of shelter.

Suddenly he came upon a man who had collapsed in a snowbank. ‘Hey, are you okay?’ asked Steve.

‘I’m so cold, and so tired,’ stammered the man. ‘My legs are numb and I don’t think I have the strength to make it any further.’

‘Let me help you,’ Steve said. He removed his gloves and began rubbing the man’s arms and legs. After several minutes, the man felt strong enough to stand on his feet. The two men supported each other and made their way through the storm.

Once they reached shelter, Steve thanked the man for all his help.

‘Thank me?’ said the man. ‘Son, I never would’ve made it out of there if it wasn’t for you. I owe you my life.’

‘No, you don’t understand,’ Steve countered. ‘I was tired, cold and ready to give up. Helping you gave me the strength and determination to carry on. I owe you everything.’

A powerful story about the impact of giving to others and looking beyond our own needs.

I was moved by a story in the media this week titled “Two young girls wrote to Cate Campbell in the dark days after Rio. The letters saved her career.”

After the Rio Olympic Games, Australian swimmer Cate Campbell was left shattered by her sixth placing in the 100m freestyle final, having been the world record holder and clear favourite, personally claiming it was ‘the greatest choke in Olympic History.’

Even though Cate had won a gold medal in the 4x100m freestyle event, she faced a barrage of criticism and vitriol on social media.

Two sisters Elin, 10, and Nele Schulz, 13, decided to write Cate two personal handwritten letters of encouragement, letting her know that she had nothing left to prove and that in their eyes she would always be their role model.

Elin wrote “If you think you have to go to Tokyo and win a medal to prove yourself, please don’t feel that way. For me you have already proven to be an amazing athlete.”

And Nele stated “You can be really proud of what you’ve done. I want to be just like you one day!”

The letters had a profound healing effect on Cate and a knot that had been inside her since Rio started to unwind, and she felt the burden of expectation just lift. “I remembered then I had a choice.”

So fast forward to 2021 and Cate is swimming in Adelaide at the Tokyo Olympic trials and leading up to the event, had the opportunity to connect with Elin, now 15, in person and Nele, now 18, via FaceTime as she is studying overseas.

Two young girls decide to think beyond their own needs and reach out to someone they admire, who was struggling. It is wonderful to witness the ripples of positivity that flowed from their actions.

Here I am, sharing the story with you and their generosity of spirit five years ago continues to inspire today!

As Mr Corcoran’s father would say “the little things matter.”

This term has been full of wonderful events and there is much to be thankful for and to celebrate in the life of the School. I thank all members of the school community for your ongoing support and wish you and your families a relaxing and reinvigorating school holiday period.

Community Update

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the second term of school. We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong and generous tradition of service through the giving of time.

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) all come together as passionate and dedicated volunteers to selflessly support our School and the wider Redlands community. All of the important groups of committed and passionate volunteer members highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands.  These community meetings and events provide a wonderful opportunity for us all to stay connected, included and informed. Thank you one and all.

Tomorrow we look forward to welcoming and celebrating our Redlands House, Preparatory and Junior School Mums and Carers on campus with coffee and classroom activities.  For those who haven’t already booked you can do so here. Our Mother’s Day Celebration marks the final event in another busy term. It has been wonderful to once again share the campus with our community and we look forward to hosting more events on site as their year unfolds. With that in mind, please save Saturday 4 September in your family calendar for our Community Day. We will share further details of this whole of Redlands community event early next term.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support this term and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful mid-year break with your family.

Second Hand Uniform Sales

The Second Hand Uniform Sales are a great way to make the most of what the world has already produced, help your wallet and do an extra little bit for sustainability as well.

We need your donations of clean current uniforms. (There is particularly strong demand for tracksuits! Please note NO polo shirts, due to the new uniform designs being implemented.) Please ensure all donations are washed and free of stains and holes. This past term, we had 8 garbage bags of unsaleable donations, which is why we ask you to please put them on a coat hanger (or use the ones provided by the Uniform Shop), so you can ensure they are of good quality.

Please deliver your donations to the Uniform Shop during their operating hours during weeks 2 and 3 of Term 3, from Monday 19 July to Friday 30 July. The email to announce the sale will be sent out on Monday 9 August and collections will be the week of 16 August.

As always, funds raised are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund, this year in honour of Belinda Oxley.

Thank You to our Community

I would like to take this opportunity and thank all members of our community – parents, staff, students, Alumni and other partners – who have joined our efforts and contributed in many different ways to reach our goal and establish another means-tested scholarship named after Belinda Oxley.

This Term’s activities included a very popular Arts Luncheon, Second Hand Uniform Sale (RPFA), Yr 12 Legacy Gift team initiatives – Yr 7 Movie Night and The House Sprit Fair. In addition, our wider community was invited to make tax-deductible contributions.

It is always hard to single out individuals from the many members of our community who participate and make a lasting difference. In this issue, I would like to acknowledge the outstanding work of the Foundation Advisory Committee which provides me and the wider team with invaluable suggestions and ideas. Members of this Committee also participate in various initiatives and events which the Redlands Foundation undertakes for the advancement and growth of the School.

So Much to Celebrate!

The term is ending but the energy is still high within the Redlands community. At the Athletics Carnival today, it was a little chilly in the shade, but the sun was shining and the students were busy competing in a variety of events. The teachers were generously supporting them and the announcing team, replete with students and staff, kept everyone buoyed with music playlists. The day started with Yr 12 student Emma Mahon breaking a 40-year record in the Senior Girls 1500 metres. Yr 7 student Amber Kusano then broke a 20-year record in the 12-14 yrs Girls 1500 metre race. Henry Charles, Audra Olson, Tom Reeves and Lauren Wong also broke Redlands records during the day in a range of various races! What a sensational set of athletes!

At home and away students are excelling in their chosen sports field. Yr 11 student, Ben Harrington, spent last weekend sailing in the East Coast Championships at Georges River Sailing Club, with a fleet of 25 boats from around NSW.  Ben, and his skipper, had an exceptional 1st day, and then fairly consistent sailing for the next two days despite the wind strength dropping.  After drops, they had all top 10 finishes, and their final place was 5th overall.

Alissandra Braden (Yr 9) competed at the same tournament, and after three days of competition, also placed 5th and was the 1st Female Skipper. Congratulations to Ben and Alissandra for their exceptional performances!

This week at our Wednesday Stand Up meeting we farewelled four members of the School staff. Whilst it occurred during a busy school day, at the end of a jam-packed term, taking the time to pause, reflect and give thanks for each other, was much needed. There were four wonderful speeches to celebrate the professional journeys of Luke Cantrill, Sharon Harrison, Nerida Patton and Simone Salier, and Chris Allen’s farewell of Luke Cantrill beautifully encapsulated our core purpose as educators. Chris’ eloquent and personal description of Luke’s capacity to build authentic relationships with students and to engender in them, a strong passion for the subject of History, through the building of deeply emotional connections, reminded a weary staff, why we do what we do. Not only was Chris’ speech a testament to Luke’s contributions, it was a celebration of effective teaching and the power of positive relationships, central to the mission of a Redlands education. What we heard was genuine respect, a deep knowledge of the strengths of a colleague and the capacity to articulate what defines an effective educator – relationship-building and the capacity to inspire learning. I would like to personally thank Luke, Simone, Nerida and Sharon for their commitment and service to the School and to the education of our students. Teaching is a heart and soul job, like so many others. It is always affirming however, to hear of the successes of others, as their success is also ours, and it inspires us to strive for excellence.

Tomorrow we say goodbye for the term in formal assemblies. First, we have the Yr 10-12 Assembly, followed in the afternoon by the Yr 7-9 Assembly. In both assemblies, students take the lead and showcase their presentation and performance skills. I am really looking forward to watching our Yr 11 IB Theatre students give us a taste of the performance which led them to winning the State Shakespeare Festival. We are also looking forward to hearing from Yr 11 students who will be stepping into the places of our Yr 12 leaders as they leave the day early, to prepare for their Formal, being held tomorrow night at the Shangri-La. This will be a fitting way to end the term for a group of students who have worked extremely hard this term, and deserve something special and fun.

I hope the next few weeks provides you and your family time to rest and rejuvenate. Best wishes for a safe and restful holiday period.

Yr 12 School Formal

We are looking forward to the Yr 12 Formal this Friday evening at the Shangri-La Hotel. The event begins at 7pm and students will be COVID and Alcohol tested on arrival. The Formal is not in the Ballroom but in a function room downstairs at the Shangri-La. It is a great space but unfortunately the layout isn’t such with a foyer or area to view the students as they arrive. Due to these restrictions, we recommend that parents take photos at home prior to students departing. Parents will not be required to collect students from the venue.

Yr 12 Careers Expo at Moore Park

On the 3rd June, Yr 12 students attended the Careers Expo at Moore Park. It was a most informative afternoon as students had the opportunity to make connections with staff from tertiary institutions. Sincere thanks to Ms Simone Salier for her organisation of this opportunity for students.

NSW CIS Cross Country Carnival

NSW CIS XC carnival was held at the Sydney Motorsports Park, Eastern Creek on Thursday 10 May. The conditions were tough – with competitors running in 5 degree weather and rain, which made the course muddy and slippery. Congratulations Emma and Felix for their commitment in such difficult conditions.

18 years Girls 6k – Emma Mahon 2nd place (23:28)
18 years Boys 8k – Felix Abrahams 42nd place

Year 11

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of Semester 1. I am sure you are all very proud of how your children have stepped up this year, studied hard, volunteered and participated in leadership positions, and become role models for the younger yr groups. I hope they all enjoy a well-earned holiday and come back refreshed for the start of Term 3 and the last term of Yr 11. This term has come to a close with the annual Year Group photo and the Athletics Carnival. I have included two unofficial versions of our photo: you will receive the official one later in the year.

We wish Cowper Blue Tutor, Nerida Patton, all the best in her new role as she will be leaving Redlands for a different school at the end of this term. We also wish Jess Howard, Assistant Yr Advisor, all the best in her upcoming marriage during the holidays and keep our fingers crossed for good weather on her wedding day. Finally, we wish Audra Olson, one of our Yr 11 students, all the best as she moves to the USA with her family and we are sad to see her leave.

Term 2 begins for students on Tuesday 13 July. We appreciate your support in ensuring each student returns to school looking smart with a focus on correct length of skirts/pants, blazers, jumpers, hair neat and tidy with no dye, and only the minimal jewellery that is permissible in the school regulations. This will enable the Tutors, Jess and I to focus on the more positive support for the students.

NSW CIS Cross Country Carnival

Congratulations to Max Rawlinson who placed 45th in the 17Y Boys 6km race last Thursday at the CIS Cross Country held at Eastern Creek. It was particularly difficult as he had to run in the cold and rain, making the course muddy and slippery.

The Yr 11 Pastoral Team all hope you have a wonderful break from the school routine in the next three weeks, and manage to spend some quality time with your family.

Year 10

Have a safe, relaxing and well deserved break!

I would like to wish all Yr 10 parents and students a safe, relaxing and well deserved break. This term has been jam-packed with Subject Selection, Half Yearly Examinations, House Spirit Day and the Secondary School Athletics Carnival – just to name a few events. It has been wonderful to see the growth and maturity of Yr 10 over the last term and both Ms El Martin and I can’t wait to see further growth of our Yr 10 students in Semester 2. I am sure Term 3 will be an exciting term with many of our Yr 10 students attending Winter School at our High Country Campus in Jindabyne. Both El and I will be attending Winter School at some point throughout the term to check in with our Yr 10 students.

Thank you for all your ongoing support this term.

Start of Term 3: Tuesday 13 July

Student Achievements

Well done to Maddie Barwise (44th), Sebastien Griffith (41st), Keian Murphy (64th), and Lily Swift (50th) who competed at the NSW CIS XC Carnival at Sydney Motorpark at Eastern Creek. The conditions on the day were freezing, wet and slippery which made each of our students runs that much more liberating when they crossed the finish line. Well done Maddie, Sebastien, Keian and Lily.

Congratulations to Will Pearson and Josh Hicks who represented Redlands at the CIS Rugby Invitational last week. This week they have the CIS Rugby Championships. Best of luck boys!

Leading Wellbeing: A student perspective reflection

On Friday 11 June, Daniel Close, Jess Marshall, and I were chosen from the Yr 10 cohort, as part of the Term 2 IGNITE team, to take part in the Leading Wellbeing: A student perspective which was held by both Knox Grammar and Ravenswood School and learn about wellbeing and how to be a good leader in the community and school.

This experience was really eye opening in the ways that a good leader’s first skill that they should be good at is being a listener which is a theory introduced to us by Eddie Jaku, a 101 year old who survived the Holocaust.

Throughout the day we enjoyed ourselves listening to speakers like Eddie Jaku, Mr James (Knox Headmaster), Mrs Johnstone (Ravenswood Principal). We also took part in two workshops throughout the day where we would learn and talk about character strengths and values and also achieving the best version of you.

I really enjoyed this event and would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to take part in the conference in 2022.

Subject Selection

It was pleasing to see our Yr 10 students register their subject choices for their senior years of study this week. From the feedback given by students regarding Subject Selection Interviews with key members of staff, the interviews were positive and cemented the student’s subject selection choice, particularly those students who were unsure whether to select HSC or IB. If you have any further questions regarding HSC please email Mr David Randall and for any IB inquiries, please email Mr Darren Taylor.

Important Events

Monday 14 July: Yr 9 into Yr 10 Information Night

Yr 9 Parent Teacher Evening

Thank you to all of your time dedicated to the Parent Teacher Evenings this week. Students were reminded prior to the evening that while this is a fantastic opportunity for teachers and parents to connect and discuss specific feedback regarding academics, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to make changes and turn the feedback into action.

Cowper Yellow Tutor – Best Wishes to Mr Luke Cantrill

Luke joined Cowper Yellow during Quarantine last year and met his Tutor class via Zoom. Several Yr 9 students have had the honour of working with him in Tutor and/or through History class. His students quickly grew fond of his teaching style as well as his care and support for his students. Luke is moving to Canada during this term break and he will be sorely missed. We wish him all the best and prepare to welcome a new Tutor to the Yr 9 cohort next term.

Congratulations and Celebrations

Alissandra Braden sailed 3 days last weekend at the Sailing East Coast Championship. She earned 5th place and was 1st Female Skipper. Congratulations to Alissandra for her exceptional performance last weekend, all while injured to boot.

Grace Durrant is congratulated and wished all the best for being selected to compete in the Surfing NSW State Championships in July. Good luck, Grace!

Jess Van Extel is congratulated and wished all the best for being selected to compete in the Hockey NSW State Championships this month. Good luck, Jess!

NSW CIS Cross Country Carnival

Congratulations to all students who competed in the NSW CIS Cross Country Carnival this month. Coach Nick Walker reported that the conditions were tough. Languages Project Winners

Last week at assembly, the Language Research Project winners were presented with their certificates. The awards were for best demonstration of cultural awareness, most creative and best use of technology, as voted by students’ peers and teachers. Well done to all students for the positive, collaborative and reflective approach they demonstrated in their projects and special congratulations to the winning students on their achievements.

Preparing Academically for Term 3

During this term break, it is a fantastic opportunity for students to revisit their Assessment Calendar linked in Redlands Pulse. Next term, students do have assessments spread throughout the term and several assignments will begin to compound if not planned in advance. Students will have the opportunity to map out their term with their Tutors and Tutor Group in Term 3 Week 1. However, additional time noting due dates, backwards planning and revisiting how to chunk larger assignments is recommended. Please see Dr. Prue Salter’s advice by encouraging your teen to work through the modules: Managing your Workload and Assignment Skills.

Futurepreneurs Masterclass

A group of Yr 8 students attended the Futurepreneurs Masterclass held at Canva HQ, Surry Hills. This Masterclass offered an experiential learning framework that activated students’ entrepreneurial ‘DNA’, augmenting and amplifying classroom learning outcomes which built new capabilities for the future. Led by a trained Entropolis facilitator, Ms Tanya Price, students worked through 10 exciting challenges, simulating a real start-up journey, designed to develop creative problem solving, design thinking and pitching skills. Throughout the day, students collaborated with their peers, collected feedback on their ideas and built on their confidence and resilience as they presented their business concepts in a mock investor pitch to a live audience (Mr Corcoran, Ms Van de Peer, Mr Bentley, Ms Jansons, and Yr 8 parents). The concepts designed by our students demonstrated their sophistication as a group – mature and thoughtful, they excelled at this project.

Pastoral Dodgeball Competition

In Pastoral Care this week, Yr 8 has created a dodgeball tournament between each tutor class. All students have been eager and enthusiastic in their participation of this student led activity. The Cowper Yellow team smashed the Cowper Blue players, leaving three players left and fighting to stay in the competition. Dumolo Red won by only one point whilst the spectators were sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for that final buzzer. McDouall Blue won with an outstanding headshot against McDuoall Green. Roseby Red had a quite reasonable run throughout the majority of the game but however, Roseby White came through to win the game. We look forward to the semi-finals.

Ms Willis and I wish you all a happy and safe holiday period. Yr 7 have had a big year so far and I encourage all students (and parents) to find some time stop and reflect on the year that has been. We are looking forward to welcoming the cohort back on July 13 refreshed and ready to tackle Semester 2.

ICAS Science

The 2021 International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Science will take place on Monday 23 August in school. This competition is undertaken by over 400,000 students across Australia and the region and is a rigorous test of scientific thinking. Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country. Students who are interested in Science can use the test to assess areas of strength and weakness. Success at the test is a way of demonstrating aptitude when applying for Science related opportunities in and out of school.

Entry for students in Yrs 7-10 is voluntary. Please complete the form here Registration for ICAS before Monday 26 July if you would like your child to take part. (Plese note earlier registration date.) A fee of $16 will be charged to your account if you wish your child to participate.

Mother’s Day Coffee Morning – Friday 18 June

Thank you to parents who have RSVP’d as part of our COVID plan for tomorrow morning’s event on the last day of this term. We look forward to seeing parents on campus in the piazza .

There will be coffee carts located in front of the canteen and mums are invited to grab a coffee and a granola cookie at the carts upon arrival.

If you are attending, please sign in using the QR code for COVID check in and look for the signs to show where year group parents will be gathered.

Year 6 Kidpreneur Training Day

Today, our Yr 6 students have enjoyed an engaging and immersive day program run by Entropolis in entrepreneurship to amplify their creativity and start developing problem solving, teamwork, design thinking and pitching skills.

With the Secondary School Athletics Carnival happening off site, Yr 6 enjoyed a full day on the Senior Campus in the new Learning Hub, which they have really enjoyed and has helped to familiarise them a little more with this campus ahead of the transition to Yr 7 for most of the cohort next year.

It was great to see students working in mixed groups of students from across the whole year group to solve problems and I was very impressed with the level of thinking, collaboration and ideation.

Later today, the groups will then pitch their final concept ideas to the year group and staff.

We look forward to hosting a similar event for Yr 5 early next term.

Final Notice: International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) 2021

For over 30 years, International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), have taken place in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, the Pacific region and South Africa. ICAS is an initiative of Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), a not for profit organisation owned by the University of New South Wales (UNSW).

At Redlands, it is optional for Junior School students to sit these tests in Term 3. Assessments occur during class time within a supervised area of the Junior School. No particular preparation is required and all students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly, their total score as well as their average compared with the rest of the students in the State.

A more detailed letter and registration details can be found here on Redlands Pulse and any questions should be directed to the Dean of Administration, Ms Atkins.

Semester One Reports

Student reports for Semester One will be uploaded to Redlands Pulse for your private access during the early part of next week.

Back copies of your son or daughter’s reports are also available via Redlands Pulse. To access the reports, parents will need their Redlands Pulse user name and password. Parents requiring assistance re user name or password should email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.

Do take some time over the break to read through it with your child and acknowledge and celebrate areas of growth and progress. As students return for Term 3, their class teachers will also spend time with your child looking at aspects of goal setting for the second semester, which they will then share with you at the Student-Led Conferences in Week 4 of next term.

Redlands Snowsports

Over the break, many Redlands students and families will head down to the snow and I extend my best wishes to all of our Junior School students involved in a variety of events and competitions at the snow over the upcoming break. I look forward to getting updates from staff and acknowledging the students’ efforts and successes next term.

Time for a Break

As we approach the mid-year break, I encourage families to take time for rest and relaxation. As is also the case for our staff, these times away from Redlands are very important for all of us as they then allow us to be at our very best when we are here. Rest, in whatever sense, is different for all of us which and I hope that the break allows you to relax and recharge.

To those of you travelling, I wish you safe travels and we look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Tuesday 13 July. Please note that the Junior School Office will reopen on Monday 12 July.

PREP SCHOOL UPCOMING EVENTS

What a Great Term

As the term draws to a close, I would like to thank all our families for a tremendous term of connection and community.

This term has highlighted the importance of student voice in many areas of learning. Our Yr 1 students demonstrated their skill in organising and sharing key messages around Reconciliation Week, Heritage Week, kindness and embracing diversity in our fortnightly Prep Gatherings. Their bravery and risk-taking skills were impressive as they stood proudly and engaged all our staff and students. We thank our Yr 1 staff for gently guiding our students and helping them organise their big ideas! Next term we welcome the voices of our Kindergarten students in Prep Gatherings.

Term 2 is always a bit of a ‘light bulb’ term for me as an educator. It is a term where the ‘settling in process’ is well and truly over and our learners have shown us how they learn and together we have worked out how to get them to the next steps in their journey. Friendships have developed and the language used to negotiate them is embedded. Compassion and kindness is highlighted for so many as is the courageous voices of some who have learnt to say ‘I need help.’

Connection has occurred in many ways this term in Prep. We have loved all our visiting parent speakers, helpers and volunteers who have shared in our learning. Our musicians had their lunchtime concerts and we finally had our Mother’s Day event! Next term we can’t wait to welcome parent helpers into our Reading Groups and hopefully we can find many more ways that we can connect together.

As a staff we also found new opportunities to connect and collaborate around our teaching and learning practices. The staff now meet every second Tuesday afternoon for a professional development session where we can focus on a specific area together. Next term we will have the focus of Seven Steps to Writing Success program as our focus.

I would like to thank you all for a great term, for your ongoing support of the Prep and of the fabulous staff. I hope that you all enjoy a lovely break and I look forward to seeing you all in term 4.

Prep Learning Conversations: Term 3 Week 3

Please note that our Prep Learning Conversations with teachers will take place in Term 3, Week 3. You will find it in the calendar on Pulse. We will be following the same process as we had in Term 1 with staff opening up times for both face to face or Zoom interviews. Please read the information carefully as to which you choose. The information will be sent out shortly with booking information.

Community Day: Saturday 4 September

Please save Saturday 4 September in your family calendar for our Community Day. We will share further details of this whole of Redlands community event early next term.

Lost Property

Friday will be the last day to come to find that lost lunch box, drink bottle, blazer and wait for it, even a seat belt! It has been so helpful to have names on so many items and they have been able to be returned to their owners.

Winter Uniform

Can I please remind families that all students are to be wearing their blazer to school in the winter months and have their jumpers in their bags for extra warmth during the cold weeks ahead. The students have hangers in their rooms that they use to hang their blazers on when they take them off. Blazers I know can be lost easily and hence some students are not bringing them to school. Please know that we are attempting to teach our young learners to look after their property, find it when it goes missing and learn to take responsibility for their things. Please help us do this by ensuring their names are clearly marked on all items. It’s a great idea to write the names together so your child knows where to look and develops ownership of the property.

Term 3 Parent Volunteers

Thank you to all the parents who came to the helper information session this week. It was so lovely to see so many faces who are all willing to give up their precious time to assist us in our reading groups. Our Grade Coordinators will email out the roster hopefully by the end of term or if not, the first week of Term 3 for our Week 2 start to those parents who came on Wednesday.

Please don’t worry of you didn’t get to come this week as we will have another information session at the start of Term 4 for any new volunteers.

Rugby

Over the holiday period Redlands Rugby will be running holiday sessions designed to upskill students across all facets of the game. These will be smaller grouped sessions with multiple coaches attending, meaning they can be more detailed and offer immediate feedback to the students involved.

The sessions will be run predominantly across the third week of the holidays with a smaller group of sessions throughout the second week as well. Whilst not compulsory, I would encourage any students who are available to attend these sessions. Session times will be sent to all students, parents and carers across the last day of school and can also be accessed via Redlands Pulse.

This weekend our three ISA Representatives, Joshua Hicks, William Pearson and Hugo Scott, will be participating in the NSW Schoolboy Championships. With a team training on Friday, they will prepare themselves for their opening match against a strong GPS side with the winner looking to face CAS in the second round. For anyone wishing to attend, all matches will be held at Waratahs HQ in Daceyville with the opening game for ISA being held at 11:10am.

I would also like to highlight one of our exceptional coaches who was again selected in the NSW Super W again and has also been selected in the Wallaroos. Piper Duck has been fantastic this season and has made an immediate impact, working predominantly as a Forwards Coach with our Under 15s. Please make sure to congratulate Piper when you next see her on the sidelines.

Last evening Friday 12 June 2021, saw another extraordinary evening of live entertainment provided by the finalists of our Senior Vocal Competition for 2021. Our guest adjudicator, Clarissa Spata, commented on the overwhelming talent rising in our ranks at Redlands, and gave thoughtful mentoring advice for those wishing to pursue a future in the performance field.

We congratulate all finalists and celebrate the achievements of the following place-getters:

Senior Instrumental Competition 2021

The Redlands Senior Instrumental Competition for 2021 will be the next offering in our Competition series, and is to be held on Monday 13 September 2021. Auditions will take place in Term 3, Week 2. Australian Composer Incursion

We’re so very fortunate at Redlands to have an extraordinary team of Music specialists and tutors offering world class music-learning opportunities to our students. Over the past few weeks, students across Yrs 10-12 have enjoyed a focused exploration in the field of contemporary Australian Composers and Compositions. How fortunate we were to bring the acclaimed Nick Russoniello (also a well-loved Redlands Saxophone Tutor) in to curriculum lessons to present composition seminars for students. Nick’s sharing regarding his own compositional process was enlightening, with students reporting inspiration to further explore idiomatic writing for their own instrument specialisations.

Redlands Composition Competition 2021

Calling all singer-songwriters & budding Australian Composers!

After a successful 3 years of EP recordings, we are delighted to announce the next Redlands EP in the pipeline for 2022! We hereby open our call for submissions. Winning compositions will be selected by a panel of specialists to be professionally produced and studio engineered for release as part of our Redlands EP project.

Looking for a holiday project? Get those creative juices flowing and ensure your Entry Form and Composition are submitted by Friday 13 August 2021. Entry Forms are available from the Senior Music Office or for download from Pulse.

Music at Winter School

In the hope of further supporting learner continuity, the Music Department is considering trialling the offering of occasional Private Instrumental or Vocal Tuition sessions for Winter School attendees over Zoom.

Though there are many variables to navigate, if your child is attending Winter School and you would like us to investigate the possibility of occasional Instrumental or Vocal lessons with your tutor, please use this sign-up form to confirm your interest by Tuesday 13 July 2021.

Music Awards Dinner – Friday 20 August 2021
