Issue 16 2021 - 27 May 2021

From the Principal

On Monday, I had the pleasure of attending the Innovation and ICT Umbrella group meeting of IPSHA schools, hosted by Redlands Junior School. It was wonderful to see these presentations focused on innovative technology use utilising AR and VR in primary school teaching and learning, but what was most impressive was the content presented and delivered by Year 6 Redlands students. Orla Collins, Emma Cruttenden, Lucy Goodsall, Kernel He, Ruairi Lambert, Max Nicholson, Rowan Petersen and Musato Ueno, the Year 6 Student Technology Leaders, delivered a presentation on The Power of Student Agency in Driving Digital Innovation to a room of 45 teachers and IPSHA officials from over 28 schools. Following this, they ably assisted our Junior Campus eLearning Coordinator, Ms Argiro Anagnostu, in the presentation on “Making Thinking Visible with Virtual Reality Glasses”, as they set up, coordinated and supported guests’ use of VR glasses in the demonstration.

The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards ceremony was held on Tuesday at Sydney Olympic Park, and it was a privilege to attend and recognise Redlanders Isabel Binnekamp (2019), Maya Auld (2020) and Aymon Holth (2020) on their outstanding achievement. Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales, gave an inspiring address on the late Duke of Edinburgh’s outstanding contribution to education and the value he placed on students learning through challenging experiential educational opportunities.

It was wonderful to be able to have Yr 10 parents and students on site on Wednesday evening for the Yr 10 into 11 Information Night, with the opportunity for staff to engage with parents regarding the various subject offerings and pathways. It has also been pleasing to note the positive feedback from the Yr 10 Industry Day last week, with our Yr 10 students having the opportunity to connect with various organisations. My thanks to the following businesses for opening their doors and providing such a rich learning experience for our students: Buildcorp, EY, Snowy Hydro, Microsoft, Camphin Boston, The Agency, Connected Culture, MHDP Architects, We are Kindred, Griffin Theatre, Clayton Utz, Carroll & O’Dea Lawyers and Practera.

The Redlands Arts Luncheon held at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron on Wednesday was a most memorable occasion, as we celebrated the strength of the Arts and Design programs in the School and the extensive range of opportunities available to students. The Redlanders guest panel, comprising Amy Cheung (1989), Amelia Carroll (2011), Cloudia Elder (2011) and Max Glanville (2009), shared reflections of their experiences of the Arts and Design programs at Redlands and how this had contributed to their personal and professional development. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to highlight the importance of the Arts in our lives and a celebration of how much the Arts are valued at Redlands. It was also an opportunity to launch the Belinda Oxley means-tested scholarship, with over $40,000 raised through this event. My heartfelt thanks to all members of our community for their generosity and to other organisations who contributed items for the silent auction.

To cap off an eventful week, I am very much looking forward to the Senior Music Festival, to be held at The Concourse on Friday evening. After almost 18 months at Redlands, it will be my first larger scale Performing Arts production and no doubt a fitting farewell for our Coordinator of Music Mr Darren Kuilenburg, as he leaves to take on a new challenge after many years of dedicated service to the School. I know the students and staff are looking forward to sending him off in style and are excited to be performing for the community.

Finally I would like to sincerely congratulate Yr 4 student Viraj Tandon who has been announced this morning as a finalist in the 9-12 age category in this year’s Young Archie 2021 competition for his painting My Grandfather’s Secret Garden. Well done Viraj!

Mr Stephen Webber

Head of Secondary School

One aspect of Redlands I have come to really appreciate over the past few months is the authentic focus on student voice and student perspective. Understanding students’ educational experiences and desires is critical to their formation. They are a values-driven generation who want to pursue lifestyles and careers which align with their values. They learn when there is a clear purpose and when what they are learning brings meaning to their life. And thus, our mission to engage them, and to grow them, as young people who seek to be engaged, is so important. There are a variety of ways we listen to our students’ perspectives and hear their voice at Redlands. No doubt they will tell you that we frequently survey them. We do! And perhaps they do sometimes suffer from survey-fatigue, but this is a quick way to take their pulse on certain issues. We also talk with them: during Tutor time, in class, in the playground, in clubs and at sport. Next term we look forward to relaunching the Student Representative Council (SRC). We look forward to our students in Yrs 7-10 leading the way in the relaunch of the SRC and being able to use this platform to practise the art of using their voice.

Paul Dillon’s visit to the School was very much appreciated by students, staff and parents this week. His goal is to ensure that we all have access to good quality information and best practice drug education. Our Year 10-12 students engaged in a variety of age-appropriate presentations in order to support them to reduce risks and stay safe. Paul’s humorous and direct way of speaking was well received by our senior students. As part of our professional learning commitment to our teachers, staff also took part in a session designed to assist them to converse with students about practising safe behaviours in the pastoral care space. On Monday night, we were so pleased that so many parents could join us for Paul’s presentation on vaping, entitled “Short and Sweet”, either in person or via a live-stream. Paul’s information and advice was helpful and enabling. Paul’s blog is a great space to access the topical issues of the day, and where he addresses some of the questions and queries he is regularly asked by those attending his presentations.

It was great to be able to pop by and meet Yr 7 parents at the first Parent Tech Info Session on Tuesday morning. Our resident eSafety expert, Ms Wendy Duckworth, led the session on supporting students to self-manage digital devices. I think everyone agreed that ‘self-management’ is closely supported by ‘parent-management’, which is key to ensuring the development of good habits, when it comes to using a laptop, phone or ipad.  I look forward to popping into some more of these sessions which appear to be hugely beneficial and also a great way to connect.

On Wednesday morning I had the pleasure of an early morning breakfast with the Redlands Cross Country Team before they headed off for their competition. They had glorious weather and no-one rolled their ankle! Huge congratulations go to Amber Kusano (Yr 7), Isaac Brooks (Year 9), Olivia Vigneault (Yr 11) and Emma Mahon (Yr 12). Thirteen students made it through to ISA with a few reserves. I was also really pleased to be able to invite James Barrelle (Yr 12) to co-captain the Boys Track and Field with Jonah Koopers, who is currently injured. James has been a wonderful support to the students and well deserves this leadership recognition. A big thank you also goes to Mr Walker and the Sport department for their care and leadership of the students.

After breakfast I moved to lunch! The Redlands Art Luncheon, held yesterday at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, was a wonderful way to support the Belinda Oxley Scholarship Fund. Ms Katharine Boase and Mr Jonathon Gray were superb MCs and being able to hear from Redlanders who now work in the Arts was very special. I was lucky enough to sit with a beautiful group of Yr 11 parents who made me feel very welcome. There are plans afoot for a therapy-dog!

Last night it was also wonderful to meet with so many Yr 10 students and parents at the Yr 10 into Yr 11 Subject Evening. I want to thank those parents who were asked to attend the evening slightly later so we could more comfortably accommodate everyone in the Hall and Gym. Having fewer people meant we students and parents could access each other more easily and I was able to spend the latter part of the evening listening in to some wonderfully reflective conversations about the future. Earlier in the evening, I encouraged Yr 10 to keep an open mind, when it comes to making decisions about their program of study and subjects. The final part of my message is here for you to consider and underscores the holistic education we value at Redlands: “The next two years are important, but they alone will not determine the course of your life. Know this: with your parents, we want you to leave school whole and happy people. We want you to graduate as young people who know who you are and put others first, as people who have a strong sense of community and strong values. We want you to be your best selves, and we want this more for you than ‘high marks’ or a ‘high ATAR’. If you give us your best self, with all the ups and downs this brings, you will achieve and you will have plenty of opportunities to pursue in the future.”

Today I spoke to Yr 8 during Tutor time about an exciting opportunity for interested students to engage in a ‘Futurepreneurs Masterclass’ to be held on June 9 at Canva HQ. Details can be found here, and interested students have been invited to email Ms Vale their expressions of interest.

I am looking forward to A Night at the Movies, the Redlands Senior Musical Festival, being held at The Concourse Chatswood, tomorrow night. I have my ticket propped up on my desk with the details of the evening. This will be an exciting evening and another opportunity to hear the students’ voices, in song or instrumentally. I can’t wait!

This is Redlands

Our Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) continue to keep our community connected, included and supported within the many and varied aspects of school life. It was a pleasure to attend the Preparatory and Secondary School PCG Meetings this week to discuss the ongoing and future initiatives and activities of the Community Engagement team.

The Redlands community spirit was on full display earlier this week as we were able to gather together in celebration and acknowledgement of the School’s distinguished history of Creative Arts at the Redlands Arts Luncheon. We were blessed with a stunning day, an equally stunning location and inspired by the work of our Creative Arts teams (past and present), special guest speakers and panel, all stitched together by our effervescent Masters of Ceremonies. Thank you to those members of our community who so generously supported this event through the donation of prizes and sponsorship, and of course we are most grateful to those who kindly gave in the form of raffles, donations and auction bids. The event raised more than $40,000 which will be directed to the Belinda Oxley means-tested Scholarship. For photos of the event please see Foundation

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Arts Luncheon – Thank You to our Community

Yesterday our community got together at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, the home of the Redlands Sailing program, to celebrate the vibrant history of Creative Arts at Redlands and also to support the means-tested Belinda Oxley Scholarship.

Our Principal, Stephen Webber, provided a very insightful overview of the Creative Arts history and programs offered now at Redlands, as well as a brief history of scholarships at Redlands. Kylie Binnekamp, Redlands Board Director and current parent, spoke about Belinda’s legacy and her passion and impact on children’s education.

We also welcomed four Alumni speakers Amelia Carroll, Class of 2011, Cloudia Elder, Class of 2011, Max Glanville, Class of 2009 and Amy Cheung, Class of 1989, who were interviewed by our MCs Jonathan Gray, Dean of Activities, and Katharine Boase, Subject Coordinator of Dance and Yr 9 Assistant Advisor. This Panel discussion provided many insights about their Redlands education and individual journeys after graduating from Redlands.

We also enjoyed a wonderful musical performance from Erin Pacholke, Class of 2018, and videos of Performing Arts highlights over the past ten years.

Thank you to all our community members who contributed to this wonderful day, raising just over $40,000 which will be contributed towards the Belinda Oxley Scholarship. Thank you also goes to our young Alumni volunteers who assisted on the day.

There is still opportunity to participate by making a tax deductible donation HERE and/or purchasing a 12 pack of greeting cards featuring student art from the Prep, Junior and Secondary Schools. Order HERE

Yr 9 Languages Learning Walk

Yr 9 Languages students took part in an activity to share their learning from a recent project. The project involved students creating a typical lifestyle for a teenager living in a country where the language is spoken, researching cultural aspects of that country and designing a visually attractive portfolio to present their learning. In the learning walk, students visited classrooms and reflected on the projects of other students. They then voted on their favourite project in each class using the criteria ‘best use of technology’, ‘most creative project’ and ‘best demonstration of cultural awareness’. Well done to all students for the positive, collaborative and reflective approach that they demonstrated towards this task and for their excellent display of technology skills.

Reconciliation is core to the Christian faith. The entire biblical story is about God bringing humanity back into relationship with him and healing the breach in that relationship. As a country we are reflecting, this week, on the call to reconciliation with the Indigenous community.

The indigenous community asks all Australians to seek to understand their worldview and ancient culture. I have read and strongly recommend “Dark Emu” by Bruce Pascoe as one way to begin to understand the period of European settlement with more open eyes. The Indigenous Australians have called us all to hear the hard truths of the past that have been hidden, lied about or ignored by the general community. Truth telling is difficult as we recognise the past and continuing pain and sometimes our unwitting contribution to it.

Truth telling and seeking reconciliation holds great reward. It allows us to diagnose the problems, it helps us understand the issues, have empathy and a commitment to see broken relationships healed. As those past injustices are acknowledged and addressed the future becomes better with the possibility of every citizen feeling valued, cared for and a member of a harmonious community. When such deep scars are treated, we as a nation will have a brighter future.

I see similar patterns of reconciliation in the bible. The bible makes clear that there is a breach of trust between humanity, indeed individuals and God. This is often coined as sin, however it is easier to see our own part when we understand it is a rejection of God and his way. The consequence of this is a broken relationship and a broken world. There is some truth telling to think about here. God was not willing to let us go, his love for us runs too deep as he longs to have authentic relationships with us. He graciously became human himself. Jesus, the human incarnation of God, lived in our world and then died as the means or doorway to allow us to reengage with God.

Reconciliation requires more than God providing a means, it is a two-party process. We need to open that door, to recognise the broken relationship and have a desire to make it right for reconciliation to work. The reward is rich. A deep abiding love, his presence in all of our life, his wisdom to guide us and an eternity of peace and goodness to anticipate and enjoy.

I encourage you today to think about reconciliation at a national, community and personal level.

God Bless

Year 12

Paul Dillon

Our Year 12 students again enjoyed the presentation given by Paul Dillon last Monday. Despite the serious topic of driving, drinking and drug use, Paul connected easily with students and spoke in an accessible manner. He encouraged students to be as prepared as possible by being well versed about the process of random breath testing (RBT), roadside (RDT) or mobile drug testing (MDT). He provided students with some basic facts about drugs and the probable impact of being caught with an illicit substance and the far reaching effects this could have on a young person’s life. Perhaps most importantly he again discussed the importance of seeking help quickly for a friend, should something go wrong. I hope parents also had the opportunity to hear Paul talk through his parent presentation on vaping and its effects.

MoneyVest Presentation

On Wednesday, our Year 12 students listened to Dominic Aarsen from MoneyVest as he spoke with students about some of the financial challenges that they might face at this time in their lives. The workshop styled presentation “Money Confidence” proved very engaging for students as they considered whether they were a spender or saver and what relationship that they had with money. Dominic also spoke about superannuation, investing strategies and tax obligations.

Redlands Cross Country Carnival

The Redlands Cross Country Carnival was held on Wednesday and in early news, Emma Mahon won the Girls U18. In the Boys U18, Felix Abrahams achieved 8th place and James Barrelle 14th place. Congratulations to these students. More detailed results will be made available in the next addition of Note Day.

Year 11

Paul Dillon

On Monday Yr 11 were spoken to by Paul Dillon from DARTA, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia, who deliver presentations on a range of alcohol and other drug issues, and present each year to the senior students of Redlands. This year Paul followed on from his session in Yr 10, and talked to Yr 11 about the practical strategies around looking after friends at situations such as parties. He focused on the issues surrounding alcohol and cannabis, such as the impact on mental health and the teenage brain.

Senior Music Festival

This Friday sees many of our talented Yr 11 musicians participating in the Redlands Senior Music Festival at the Concourse, Chatswood. It is wonderful that after such a long time, they will be able to perform a live concert at this fantastic venue. I am looking forward to attending the event and watching the various music ensembles.

Mock Trial Report, by Sophia Maxwell

On Monday the Mock Trial team visited Monte Sant’ Angelo for the 3rd round of the Law Society of NSW’s Mock Trial Competition. Our team for this round consisted of opening barrister Jack Murray, closing barrister myself, solicitor Sophie McMillan, witnesses Charlie Harman and Callum Wardman-Browne and Court Officer Jemma Davies. Also part of the team is Louise Colin who was unavailable for this round. This most recent trial was a civil trial involving a Plaintiff whose house had been allegedly damaged by an incorrect root blocker installation by the council, which allowed tree roots to damage their property (riveting!). As the defence, our aim was to prove, on a balance of probabilities, that it was more likely the damage was caused by the Plaintiff themselves, not the actions of the council. Despite the not so exciting matter of the case, the trial itself was our most challenging trial yet. Going back and forth with Monte’s second barrister on objections to some of the presented evidence, was not as simple a task as I had hoped! We had a great time going head-to-head with Monte and it was a really tough match. Excitingly we ended up coming away with a strong win with all members of our team receiving near perfect scores! Not only did we win the point score (each team is scored points based on performance – the team with the most points wins the trial), but we also won the case, meaning the Defendant was found not liable of causing a nuisance.

Rugby Sports Report, by Hugh Sellar

Overall, being a part of the 1st XV so far has been a really enjoyable experience not only for myself, but for the rest of the Yr 11 students currently playing Rugby. The support that I have seen from the Yr 12’s and the coaching staff has been really positive this year. Training sessions have moved to the morning for the Opens, allowing time in the afternoon for educational studies for both year groups. Last weekend the 1st XV unfortunately did not have a game so Finn Brookes, Willem McCormack and I played in the U16s game against Central Coast Grammar School. The game started off with Central Coast unfortunately getting some quick tries with the half-time score being 4 tries to 1. Once the second half commenced, we were able to score 3 quick tries to get us back into the game. Sadly, Central Coast made a comeback and managed to score some more tries to overall win the game. All the boys who played put 100% effort into every tackle and every run up to the final whistle. To conclude, the start to the rugby season has been really positive in my point of view.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Seb Griffiths for his selection in the NSW U18 Boys Hockey squad for 2022. Seb is one of the youngest players on the team which is a testament to his strong ability.

Congratulations to Eloise Trueman who played beautifully at the U18 Hockey State Championships earlier this week, and as a result, she has been selected into the Hockey NSW AAP Squad (U18 State Squad).

Welcome to our new French exchange student: Emma Terdjman

A warm welcome to French exchange student, Emma Terdjman, who started at Redlands this week. She is joining our fabulous Yr 10 year group on exchange from St Genevieve College in Paris until the end of the term.

National Reconciliation Week

This week is National Reconciliation Week. The dates for NRW remain the same each year: 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

To mark this important event Redlands will be hosting a Reconciliation Film Club at lunchtime on Level 4.10 of the Learning Hub. This is an opportunity to bring people together to develop a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, histories and cultures, to ignite conversation and spark change. For further information, students can email here.

Paul Dillon: ‘Young people, alcohol and risk-taking: Looking after your mates’

Yr 10 had the opportunity to meet with Paul Dillon on Monday as part of his ‘Young people, alcohol and risk-taking: Looking after your mates’ presentation. It was pleasing to see Paul debunk some of the myths in this area, particularly around how to look after friends when an emergency presents due to risk-taking behaviour involving alcohol. It was alarming to see the increase in the prevalence rates of underage drinking and other illegal drugs consumed by secondary school students.

Yr 10 found the presentation really useful, particularly when it came to unpacking alcohol-related emergencies, including knowing when to call an ambulance and how technology can assist them with accessing emergency assistance. One of the key pieces of technology identified was the smartphone app – Emergency+. The Emergency+ app is a free app developed by Australia’s emergency services and their Government and industry partners. The app uses GPS functionality built into smartphones to help a Triple Zero caller provide critical location details required to mobilise emergency services. This app could be critical in an emergency if a student is unconscious due to being intoxicated by either alcohol or any other substance which will send an ambulance directly to the location of where the person is without the people involved having to read the coordinates of the location over the phone which can take some time to find and read out in an emergency. Parents are encouraged to talk with their child about the presentation.

Yr 9 Languages Project

Well done to all students who participated in the Languages presentation this week. Students have been working on a project to create a snapshot of life for typical families in a city in their target country.  Students have been working on this project since Term 1 and presented this Wednesday to their peers and teachers. The Languages Section in this edition of Note Day has more details of this event.

Paul Dillon

This week on Monday, Paul Dillon presented to Yr 11, Yr 12, staff and parents.  He is the director and founder of DARTA, Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia and he is an exceptional resource with a long-standing relationship with Redlands.  He will present to this cohort in Yr 10. However, we have already started teaching students about positive and negative risk-taking, refusal techniques and education around DARTA last year and this year through PDHPE and the Pastoral Care Program. The DARTA website has several suggested readings for parents. A few articles specifically for Yr 9 parents were included in the last Note Day for Term 1. Additional reading recommendations can be found using this link to the DARTA website.

Current Yr 9 Reminders

Uniforms

Thank you for your support and ongoing communication regarding uniforms.  They are looking much better.  On Tuesdays, several students are still trying to come to school in their PE uniform.  Students should only change into their PE uniform for PE or for Sport on Tuesdays.  The rest of the day, students should be in their full Winter School Uniform.

Signing In and Out

For any late sign-in or early dismissal, please ensure your child is checking in and out through the Student Services Centre. We have a duty of care to ensure students are on campus once they arrive in the morning until they leave campus at the end of the day. If students are signing out early for appointments, a note should be sent from parents to SSAbsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au. If students are feeling ill throughout the day, students should see the school nurse, Emar Macken, and any needs to go home at that time will be discussed with parents. Students should not be contacting home throughout the day and making their own arrangements without seeing the nurse.

Futurepreneurs Masterclass

Students have the opportunity to be involved in the Masterclass which offers an experiential learning framework that activates students’ entrepreneurial ‘DNA’, augments and amplifies classroom learning outcomes and builds new capabilities for the future, including: creative problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration and teamwork and pitching ideas.

Throughout the day students collaborate with their peers, collect feedback on their ideas and build their confidence and resilience as they present their business concepts in a mock investor pitch to a live audience.

Students have been offered the opportunity to apply to Ms Van de Peer and Ms Vale for this one-day workshop running on the 9 June at Canva HQ.

Paul Dillon Presentation – Some Wise Words for Parents

Paul presented to parents this week, and he finished his presentation with some excellent advice for parents.

  • Tell your children they’re great.  All the time!
  • There is always something positive you can find to say about your child. Find it and say it!
  • Really listen to your child and ‘connect’.

When did you last ‘connect’ with your child? Try to find the time at least once a week for a few minutes to really talk and listen to your child.  It’ll be worth it in so many ways.

Three simple golden rules…

  • Know where your child is.
  • Know who they’re with.
  • Know when they’ll be home.

2021 Young Archie Finalist – Viraj Tandon (Yr 4)

In a week where we have recognised the significance of the Arts at Redlands, we were ecstatic to hear that Yr 4 student, Viraj Tandon, was this morning announced as a finalist in the 9-12 age category in this year’s Young Archie 2021 competition.

His painting is entitled, My Grandfather’s Secret Garden, and accompanying the painting, Viraj wrote, “This is my Nanu and his secret garden which is tucked away at the back of his house. It is an enchanted garden full of beautiful fruit trees, colourful flowers and fragrant herbs that he loves to grow and share with us. Even the Cockatoos love it so much that they often visit to feast on the figs and other fruit. I always laugh when he chases the birds away. I look forward to picking the chillies and lemons so that my grandmother can make chilli-lemon jam!”

Viraj’s painting was selected from more than 2100 entries with guest judge artist, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran. The Young Archie Finalists will go on display in the Art Gallery of New South Wales alongside the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes from Saturday 5 June until Sunday 26 September and the winner of the Young Archie competition will be selected from the Finalists and announced on 31 July 2021 at a special event held at the Gallery. The Young Archie artworks will soon go live on the website of the Gallery of New South Wales.

My family and I always enjoy visiting this exhibition and this is the first time that Redlands has had a finalist in this prestigious competition so it will have added meaning when we visit this year. Congratulations, Viraj.

Innovative Learning and ICT

On Monday, we were thrilled to host the termly meeting of the NSW branch of the Independent Primary School Head of Australia (IPSHA) Innovative Learning and ICT Group. With 45 staff from 28 different independent primary schools, the session allowed for schools to share presentations focused on innovative technology use in primary school teaching and learning. Our Junior Campus eLearning Coordinator, Ms Argiro Anagnostu, coordinated a Virtual Reality experience for our guests exploring how to Make Thinking Visible with Virtual Reality Glasses, and as the only school who led two workshops, our second presentation was most ably and expertly delivered by some of our Yr 6 students. Our Yr 6 Student Technology Leaders Orla Collins, Emma Cruttenden, Lucy Goodsall, Kernel Hu, Ruairi Lambert, Max Nicholson, Rowan Petersen and Misato Ueno, delivered a presentation on The Power of Student Agency in Driving Digital Innovation. Watching them confidently present to an audience of ICT teachers and leaders was both inspiring and filled me with immense pride and from their presentation and a number of or visiting schools have reflected on how they might provide their students with greater voice and agency in their learning.

My thanks to Ms Anagnostu, the Yr 6 students involved and our wider ICT team who helped facilitate a wonderful afternoon of professional learning for many staff and schools.

Cyber Safety Resources Hub

Following on from my note in last week’s Note Day and my mention of this resource at this week’s Junior School Class Parents meeting, I wanted to remind families of our recently-launched Cyber Safety Hub specifically for our community; a central point of the latest, research-based information and support in the area of technology for our families and staff, which includes a range of relevant topics such as:

  • Cyber safety guides
  • Managing screen time
  • Creating a safe home
  • Gaming
  • Setting up parental controls
  • App and Game reviews

We have received positive feedback already from parents about the recent parent webinar and the hub and I share one such comment below and encourage every family to take some time to visit the hub; I am sure you will not be disappointed.

“Just wanted to pass on that I thought the cyber safety ySafe session last week was exceptional. Yasmin London was a very articulate and informative presenter, and her material was extremely relevant for every person with young children, including teenagers. I also found her resources to be very practical. It felt like it should be compulsory for all parents!! Thanks so much for arranging it, we are very fortunate that the School provides access to such high quality resources.”

Staffing News

As many of you may have read recently, this week marks the end of Mr Darren Kuilenburg’s 13-year tenure as Coordinator of Music P-12. Mr Kuilenburg’s visionary leadership has overseen incredible growth and development in the department across both campuses in curriculum and cocurricular areas and like many of our Junior School staff, I have enjoyed working alongside him and we have been grateful for his dedication and service to students and our wider community. As he takes up the Director of Music role at International Grammar School, I know you will join me in wishing him all the very best in this exciting new opportunity for him.

Connected to this change and until his replacement joins us, Mrs Amy Richardson, our Head of Junior Campus Music steps into Mr Kuilenburg’s shoes in an Acting capacity and in turn, Ms Katherine Moses steps into Mrs Richardson’s Music leadership role on an Acting basis too. We congratulate them both on these short-term promotions and I know that they will continue to serve our Music programs and community with their passion and dedication.

Next Monday, we welcome Mr Alessandro Digiacomo as our new Junior Campus Counsellor. Mr Digiacomo will work on our campus on Mondays – Wednesdays each week and then on the Senior Campus on Thursdays and Fridays when Ms Courtney Karpin works on the Junior Campus. This split campus role will be especially beneficial and relevant for our transition of students from Yr 6 to Yr 7; a stage of schooling that Mr Digiacomo has had plenty of recent experience in, which I know will further enhance our support for all students at this point of transition.

Biggest Morning Tea – Thursday 27 May

This morning, Yr 4 hosted a sumptuous and scrumptious bake sale as part of this Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea in support of the Cancer Council. It was wonderful to see the year group come together in support of this important cause and guided by Mrs Benneyworth, the students took the lead in this community initiative. We are grateful to parents and community members who have support this fundraiser by making a donation at our online fundraising page here and with a few more cakes to sell, the students have raised well over $2,877 so far; a truly wonderful achievement!

Redlands Arts Luncheon

It was a pleasure to join parents, Board Directors, alumni and colleagues at yesterday’s inaugural Redlands Arts Luncheon to recognise the significance of the Arts at Redlands, 100 years of scholarships at Redlands and the legacy of former teacher, Belinda Oxley, in whose name a means-tested scholarship awarded to a Yr 7 student for the entire secondary schooling has been set up this year.

The School was thrilled to welcome back former students: Amelia Carroll (Class of 2011), Amy Cheung (1989), Cloudia Elder (2011) and Max Glanville (2009), all of whom have moved on to thrive in the Arts. As guest speaker and panellists, they spoke with great passion and fondness of how the Arts at Redlands had influenced them at School and now in their lives.

I have certainly missed opportunities to connect with our community in social contexts and thank all of our community who were able to attend this fundraising event.

National Virtual Debating Competition

Congratulations to our Yr 6 Debating team who won their first debate this week in the National Virtual Debating Competition. The team won with some excellent speeches and a great model and rebuttal from Caroline. Brown. The team continue their national debates over the next few weeks and I am hoping to join them for their next debate next week.

Student Health

Parents are reminded that students should be kept at home if they are unwell or developing flu-like symptoms. We have seen an increase in the number of students being sent home during the day where they have come to school slightly unwell. Aside from spreading germs to others, we know that students find it very difficult to learn when unwell and it is better for them to rest properly and return when fully recovered. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.

Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates are always the same each year: 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey, the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In Prep this week and next week our students have been and will be participating in many learning experiences that speak to the heart of respectful relationships. Our Prep Gatherings last Thursday was a beautiful springboard into the week. Our One Blue class with Ms Cooper, read and interpreted ‘inding Our Heart by Thomas Mayor. Mr Webber was also able to speak about what what reconciliation meant to him and how Uluru was the spiritual home for many Aboriginal people. Throughout the other classes the students have been reading books that share Aboriginal stories, creating their own Welcome to Country statements and participating in authentic connections experiences to help them understand and appreciate the importance of Reconciliation.

Prep Parent Cyber Safety Webinar – 1 June

Redlands invites parents to register for the Prep Parent Cyber Safety Webinar.  We are excited to offer this webinar tailored for parents of students in both Redlands House and Prep years K-2. The session will be led by Yasmin London, from ySafe, a specialist in the field of cyber safety and social media education. Yasmin draws on research and her own experience in cyber law enforcement to explore what parents should know to support their children’s digital safety and wellbeing. The session offers practical advice, resources and tips for parents as they navigate their child’s first experiences in the digital environment. Registration for this event closes Monday 31 May at 8pm. Registered attendees will receive the Zoom webinar link and access on Tuesday 1 June.

Belinda Oxley Luncheon

I was delighted to join a large number of parents, Board Directors, alumni and other members of the Redlands Community at the Redlands Arts Luncheon yesterday. We celebrated the long history of the Creative Arts and 100 years of scholarships at Redlands and enjoyed hearing how alumni who have made their careers in the fields of Creative Arts and Design were inspired by their Redlands arts education. Most importantly, we had the opportunity to celebrate former Year 2 teacher and Dean of Early Childhood, Belinda Oxley, and her passion for our school, for education and for Visual Arts. Thanks to the generosity of the Redlands Community, over $40,000 was raised for the Belinda Oxley means-tested Scholarship, which will be awarded to a deserving student for Year 7 2023.

Larry Brandy Incursion

It was wonderful to have Larry Brandy visit the Preschool this week. He entertained and educated the children with stories and information about Australia’s Indigenous culture. The children very much enjoyed joining listening to Larry and seeing all of his artifacts. They absolutely loved becoming hunters, emus, kangaroos and wallabies. Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our program will enhance the educational experiences of all students. It is important for us to acknowledge and respect the perspectives of others.

SECONDARY SPORT REDLANDS PULSE

AFL

Junior B Boys

The Junior B Boys started slow against Cranbrook but as they game progressed their intensity and physicality around the contest increased measurably. The boys dug deep to come back in the last quarter but in the end the result was a draw. Great game to watch and some great skill improvements across the team.

Junior A Boys

The Junior A Boys put on a clinical display with a strong win against Waverley. Our boys showed some great passages of play throughout the game and the skill execution was great to watch. With great tackling and intensity, the boys managed a very comfortable win.

Intermediate Boys

The intermediate Boys had a strong win against Riverview. The boys were extremely physical and placed lots of pressure on the opposition with their tackling. The boys began hitting leads and targets around the ground and showed good accuracy when kicking at goal. The backline were extremely reliable, always getting to the ball first and stayed tight on their opposition. Great game and the boys should be very happy with their performance.

Junior Girls

The Junior Girls came up against a very strong and experienced side but continued to show major improvements from previous weeks and throughout the game. They competed hard and have displayed potential to be a very strong and competitive side in the future as they build their confidence and understanding in AFL.

Intermediate Girls

The Intermediate Girls had consistency across all four quarters and had the ball in our forward line for a considerable amount of time each quarter but are not yet able to translate that into scoring shots. Special mention to Yazi Coltran (Yr 10) and Caterina Croll (Yr 10) who battled without a rotation all day in the midfield; and also to Isla Wickham (Yr 9) and Chloe Moore (Yr 9) who worked together as defenders and made significant improvement in their play. With more experience and a full list available, we should see a vastly different result when we play Pittwater again.

CIS Under 15 Representation

We recently had 2 students represent the school in the CIS Under 15 NSW All School AFL All School Championships with Eva Osborn (Yr 9) playing on Monday and Henry Charles (Yr 9) playing on Tuesday. To play at this level is a great honour and a strong reflection of the skill level from these students as other members of their CIS teams had been selected from schools as far away as far North NSW.

Both Eva’s and Henry’s teams progressed through to their respective Grand Finals where both teams won silver medals in very competitive games.

Athletics

The Redlands Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 17 June (Term 2, Week 9), the carnival program can be found on Redlands Pulse – Athletics.

We will begin Athletics training with Mosman Athletics Club on Friday 4 June, for those interested in attending please email Mr Ellis (cellis@redlands.nsw.edu.au). The bus will depart from Redlands at 3:30pm and will return approximately 5:30pm.

Cross Country

Yesterday, Wednesday 26 May, we had 85 students represent Redlands at the ISA Cross Country Carnival at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. The weather was perfect for running. It was great to see so many students challenge themselves to be their best out on the course. All students should be congratulated on their attitude, effort and behaviour on the day. Of note, there were a number of outstanding results:

13 Year Girls – Amber Kusano – 2nd

15 Year Boys – Isaac Brooks – 3rd

17 Year Girls – Olivia Vigneault – First

18 Year Girls – Emma Mahon – First

Congratulations also goes to all 15 and 16 Years Boys runners. Their outstanding team performance resulted in Redlands taking home the Intermediate Boys Shield.

A full list of students who made the ISA Cross Country team to represent Redlands and the ISA at the NSWCIS Cross Country Carnival on Thursday 10 June at the Sydney Motor Sport Park will be in Note Day next week.

Football

Round 4 of the ISA Football Season was another great round for the Girls Football program. The 1st Girls had an impressive 6-2 win, the Inter A girls had a very competitive game against Barker Inter A, finishing with a 3-3 draw. The Junior A and B teams continue to go from strength to strength with a 9-1 win for the Junior A and a 4-0 win for the Junior B team. The Boys Football program played against St Patrick’s College who continue to be a powerhouse of the competition. Although there were tough games across all divisions, it is great to see the teams improving week to week and staying competitive from start to finish.

The details for Round 5 can be found on Redlands Pulse under the “Redlands Rhino (FIXTURES)” tab. A reminder all students should be arriving at minimum of 30 minutes prior to the kick off time indicated on the fixture.

For teams travelling to Oakhill in Round 5 please note this Saturday is their annual Gala Day and therefore the campus will be busier that usual. Please allow additional travel time to find parking on the day as it is expected to be very busy. There is a limit of two spectators allowed at Oakhill this Saturday.

Fitness Centre

The Redlands Fitness Centre will continue to run our Monday morning Girls Only Session. It has been a brilliant success with great numbers across the first two weeks. This is a way to encourage all of our female athletes to attend a session specifically designed for their selected Winter Rep Sports. The session will run off the normal time with the students arriving at the session at 6:30am.

This is a great initiative and I encourage all of our female athletes to get behind the session and continue to attend in strong numbers.

Sessions for the rest of the week, Tuesday–Friday will continue as mixed age groups and students.

Hockey

Round 4 was another great round of Redlands Hockey with all teams playing at our home field at Barker College. The day started with the 2nd Girls, who got off to a flying start and managed to secure another great 7-1 win over Barker College. The 1st Girls were up next, a little undermanned this week due to the Hockey State Championships on the same day. It was great to see some of the younger players step up and play for the 1sts and play a competitive game that finished as a 0-4 loss. The Junior Girls continue to dominate the competition with a massive 6-0 win over Oxley College.

The details for Round 5 can be found on Redlands Pulse under the “Redlands Rhino (FIXTURES)” tab. A reminder all students should be arriving at minimum of 30 minutes prior to the kick off time indicated on the fixture.

A huge congratulations to Eloise Trueman and Sebastien Griffith who have been selected into the NSW AAP (Athlete Acceleration Program) squad.

Netball

It was a great day out at NBISC on Saturday morning, with 11 of our 14 teams at home all playing against Barker College, it was great to have spectators back at the courts in a socially distancedmanner. There were some great matches that went down to the final minutes. Our Senior 2 team had been moved up to Division 2 for the rest of the season and took on Barker 3 in what was going to be a tough match. This see-saw match went back and fourth throughout the first 3 quarters and with the match heading into the final quarter, Redlands kicked up a gear and ran away with the game in the 4th quarter taking the match 38-30. Our Junior D team had another exciting match on Saturday, and again with their game going down to the final quarter, the team had really focused their training on spreading out and running into space, their drives have been improving each week and they were able to field the circle really well.

We have another weekend with a number of teams playing at NBISC on Saturday, and reminder for the Junior C and Junior E teams that their games are at Dunnet Hall on Saturday morning.

Please ensure you check the Redlands Rhino for the up-to-date fixtures each week.

Rugby

Redlands Rugby came up against Central Coast Grammar on the weekend, playing three matches across our Under 13s, 14s and 16s. Central Coast are a consistent presence in the ISA Rugby Finals and it was fantastic to see how our teams, across all age-groups, took it to CCGS in defence and attack. I also must commend our Under 15s, who travelled to Pittwater Park, with a comprehensive 78-0 win against St Augustines. This weekend we come up against our rivals from the other side of the bridge, St Andrews Cathedral School. These have always been fantastic games with results bouncing back and forth between the schools.

Game times will be as follows.

Under 13s vs SACS – 09:00am Wentworth Park Sport Complex

Under 14s vs SACS – 10:00am Wentworth Park Sports Complex

Under 15s vs SACS – 11:00am Wentworth Park Sports Complex

Opens vs SACS – 12:00pm Wentworth Park Sports Complex

The Opens / 1stXV will all need to arrive and be changed by 11:00am as there will be a short team run through in preparation for the match.

Please note that all games are at Wentworth Park Sports Complex that is located inside the Greyhound Racetrack.

Tennis

On Saturday 22 May, Redlands ISA teams played a variety of schools, with a couple of schools travelling to Bowral and Gosford. We had mixed results, with our Firsts playing a convincing match against CCGS, only conceding 2 games, a great effort. Team 6 and 8 both also had good wins, however they had to work hard to win some of their sets with a number of the sets going to a tie breaker. This week marks the half way mark of the Winter Tennis Season.

Spectators are asked to sign in to each venue with the venues Service NSW QR code and to follow any instructions as directed by the school convenor present.

Just a reminder, please email Eliza Peirce directly regarding injury/illness that eliminates you from a training session. Unexplained absences will result in a lunch time detention. If you are rostered to play on Saturday and fall ill on Friday, please notify Eliza Peirce no later than 12.00pm on Friday to ensure a substitute can be found. Wet weather notifications can be found on Twitter @RedlandsSport, if you cannot find wet weather information, please turn up to your venue regardless, this applies to training and matches.
