Foundation

I would like to thank all Redlands families and friends who have already supported the Redlands Foundation this financial year by contributing to one of our Funds.

The 2019 Annual Giving is dedicated to supporting the Redlands Scholarship Appeal with the objective to raise sufficient funds to create the Dr Peter Lennox Scholarship in recognition of Dr Lennox’s extraordinary vision and contribution to Redlands.

Dr Lennox has been the embodiment of academic excellence, and during his 12 year tenure, has bequeathed to the School an extraordinary legacy of learning, supported by the development of the Senior Campus Master Plan and New Learning Hub.

Our hope is to be able to make the inaugural presentation of this Scholarship during Dr Lennox’s farewell at Speech Night on 5 December.

Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection

Do not miss this one time opportunity to view the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection at Redlands.

The Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years, consists of almost 40 pieces providing a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Julie Rrap, Lindy Lee, and many others.

This event is on Thursday 16 May from 6.00pm. Tickets available here. Drinks and canapés will be served during the evening. This is a parent only event. Bookings close on Monday 13 May.

Parents will also have an opportunity to meet Cameron Robbins, the contemporary artist who is leading the 2019 Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence (RKMAIR) program from 6 -17 May.

Students have been witnessing first-hand the creative process in action. Cameron is working on constructing an artwork that is capable of harnessing the power of the wind, natural elements and the Redlands built environment to power a drawing machine that will translate the natural forces into drawing works on paper. Many students will have an opportunity to see Cameron in action as well as will hear him speaking at Assembly on Monday. For more information, please visit our website.

From the Principal

This week has been an action-packed week on the Senior Campus. On Monday night we were delighted to host Study in the USA for the 5th time. Over 500 NSW students had the opportunity to speak with representatives from 25 US universities, as well as learn more about what is involved in the SAT exams. On Tuesday, Geography and Science students from Years 8-11 heard from Dr Jimmy White, Expedition Leader for National Geographic Expeditions, and the team from Meet the Ocean. The students learned about how they can make a positive contribution to the environment, as well as the career opportunities in the fields of marine science and environmental research. Also on Tuesday, 31 students from Years 9 and 10 won the 2019 metropolitan Science and Engineering Challenge. I congratulate the students on this wonderful achievement, and thank Mrs Aroney and Mr Wrighter for supporting them in this endeavour. Yesterday, around 60 Old Girls who left School over 50 years ago attended our annual Platinum Girls Luncheon, reminiscing over a delicious lunch and enjoying the entertainment provided by student music and dance performances.

Next Thursday evening I am very much looking forward to joining parents at the Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence function. The evening will showcase the Redlands Art Prize Collection, which has been acquired over the past 22 years of the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize, including works by Imants Tillers, Julie Rrap and Lindy Lee. Renowned contemporary artist Cameron Robbins, our Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence, will also be speaking at the evening. Cameron is currently creating an artwork on the Senior Campus and sharing his practice with Junior and Secondary School students and the finished artwork will be exhibited at next Thursday night’s function. Parents can book tickets here.

Celebration of Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection & Artist In Residence

We are delighted to present The Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection at Redlands.

The Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years, is a remarkable collection of artworks that provides a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Julie Rrap, Lindy Lee and many others.

Parents will also have an opportunity to meet Cameron Robbins, the contemporary artist who is leading the 2019 Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence (RKMAIR) program. Cameron will be at Redlands 6-17 May working with students and staff creating a site responsive artwork on the Senior Campus.

Cameron is a well-regarded contemporary artist based in Melbourne. His installations reflect a deep interest in the elements, and the resulting work seeks to make tangible the underlying structures and rhythms of natural forces. Cameron has worked extensively in Australia, most recently at MONA, creating a site responsive artwork that is currently on permanent exhibition. Having worked with many schools, Cameron is very interested in education and children having access to first hand experiences of working with an artist. He will work with Redlands students and staff creating a site responsive artwork, connecting with the natural conditions and the built landscape, including the current redevelopment on the Senior Campus.

Sports Expectations

While some sporting matches were cancelled last weekend with the wet weather earlier in the week, many other sports kicked off their winter seasons. On Saturday, I enjoyed watching our Yr 7 Rugby players run out for their first competitive match for the School against St Andrew’s and there was a great spirit on display both on the field and on the sidelines.

With the winter sports season commencing, it is a good opportunity to remind our community of the expectations in regards to spectators at sports matches. Over my time at the School, I have often noted that the behaviour and support on display from our spectators at sports is usually exemplary; however, I am a firm believer in the motto I often share with students, that we are “too good not to be better”, so it is a good time for a few reminders.

Some of these expectations include:

  • Students who are not competing in sport on the day are expected to wear their winter school uniform if they are attending sports matches in support of their peers. Students who are playing a sport on the day should wear their sports uniform if they are supporting other matches. Students should not wear casual attire attending sporting fixtures.
  • Spectators are to remain behind the barriers of playing fields at all times and are not to interfere with the matches being played. (For example, at Macquarie university please remain behind the fence at Campbell Field and the roped off areas on other fields, such as Gwilliam Field.)
  • As per the ISA Code of Conduct, spectators “should barrack in a supportive and positive manner and not to unsettle or denigrate opponents; never express disapproval of an umpire’s or referee’s decision; and are discouraged from actively coaching on the sidelines”. (The full ISA Code of Conduct can be found on the ISA website.)
  • As mentioned in last week’s Note Day, Macquarie University last year moved to a digital parking platform across the Campus and at the same time, introduced paid parking for all Sport and Aquatic Centre users. As part of this change, paid parking will also be applied to the Sport Fields as the last stage in this strategy. As of 1 May, all parking at the sport fields will attract a fee of $1.50 per hour.

Again, let me once again applaud the wonderful atmosphere that I regularly see on display at our competitive sporting fixtures and I look forward seeing this type of sportsmanship and support continue in the weeks and months ahead.

NAPLAN

Next week our Yr 7 and 9 students will be sitting the NAPLAN tests. More detailed communication around the NAPLAN tests has been sent to parents of these Year Groups. There has been a lot of press this year around NAPLAN and its purpose and validity. Last year it was announced that these tests would no longer be linked to minimum standards in literacy and numeracy for the HSC. While we believe the NAPLAN tests are a useful diagnostic measurement of literacy and numeracy skills for individual students, we do not see them as a definitive summative judgement on the academic ability of individual students. We encourage students to try their best on these tests so the data allows us to have a targeted approach to student skill development moving forward. However, we do not want students to feel unduly stressed and remind parents that these results will not contribute to school reports.

Professor Tim Flannery Presentation

To launch our National Careers Week in Week 3, Redlands invites all parents and students to a presentation by eminent scientist and 2007 Australian of the Year, Professor Tim Flannery. Professor Flannery will be giving a 30 minute presentation on the topic: ‘Where are the jobs in the future clean economy?’ followed by a Q & A session. He has been recently appointed to the Australian Museum as Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Climate Change and the presentation focuses on the need for science and innovation in a whole of economy transformation as we address climate change.

This special event will take place on Monday 13 May at 6.30pm in Redlands Hall. We look forward to seeing you there.

Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence 2019

Redlands is excited and honoured to have esteemed contemporary artist, Cameron Robbins, as our Artist in Residence in Weeks 2 and 3 of Term 2. Not only will Cameron will be working with students during this time, but he will also be creating a site responsive artwork on the Senior Campus. We will be hosting a celebration of Cameron Robbins and the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection on Thursday 16 May from 6.00 – 8.30pm at the John Roberts Centre. The Collection was created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years and is a remarkable collection of artworks which provides a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty and Lindy Lee, amongst others. We hope to see you at this special event which will showcase many works from this collection. Book here.

Attention

Parents and carers of students with a diagnosed risk of Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is the most severe form of allergic reaction and is potentially life threatening. If your child is one of the 33 students in the Secondary School with a diagnosed risk of Anaphylaxis, we ask that you help us keep them safe during the school day.

All Secondary School students who suffer from Anaphylaxis are required to keep a clearly labelled Emergency Kit containing a current Action Plan and spare EpiPen in the Secondary School Office during term time.

While most parents readily comply with this requirement, there are some who unfortunately do not.

Not unregularly, a student’s spare EpiPen is signed out to them to enable them to attend an excursion or outside school activity –“No EpiPen, No Excursion or External Activity.”

It is absolutely essential for those students affected by Anaphylaxis to have, in their possession, an EpiPen at all times.

For any student participating in their Year Camp, two (2) EpiPens are mandatory to be taken with them. On their return from Camp, every student is required to return their spare EpiPen and kit on the next school day. ie. Camps returning on Friday, students will hand their spare to the Secondary School Office on the following Monday.

A big thank you to all those parents who consistently support our endeavours to keep their children with a diagnosed risk of Anaphylaxis, safe at school and at external school activities.

Engaging with our Environment

This week we had the good fortune of hosting a talk from a team of marine scientists, passionate researchers and communicators sharing with us some of their work from research expeditions to Antarctica. The team, including Dr Jimmy White, Expedition Leader for National Geographic Expeditions along with Paul North, the International Outreach Director for the educational non-profit Meet the Ocean and his team. They talked with students and teachers about the future opportunities for our students to apply what they are learning in a wide range of subjects in order to make a positive contribution to redressing the environment impacts from climate change. Students had an opportunity to ask first hand about how these scientists careers had evolved and were impressed by the very different pathway they had followed.

Social Engagement and Service Trips

There are opportunities coming up this term for students to actively engage with social issues and make a service contribution. Our students travelling to Peru are now in the final stages of their preparations. They will be having meetings to finalise their packing and last minute organisation in the coming weeks and we are looking forward to hearing about what they have seen and learnt on their return.

Our Yr 9 students are in the early stages of their learning and planning for their trip to Fiji. This week they met to discuss their fundraising plans and reflect on the history of Fiji.

Similarly, this week also saw the second meeting of the Yr 11 students preparing for their end of year trip to Cambodia. They were also focused on exploring the complex history of Cambodia, both ancient and modern, in preparation for seeing how it has shaped the country they will visit.

Year 12

Post Exam

Congratulations to all Yr 12 students on their excellent behaviour and conduct during the examinations. It is now an important time for students to reflect on their effort, study routine and examination results from this Half Yearly Examination period. The Trial Examinations are only 12 weeks away and it is essential for all students to be studying with maximum efficiency to receive the results that they are capable of. Students will be asked to reflect on this during Pastoral Care time and it would be beneficial for all students to continue this discussion at home.

Below are some sample questions from Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills Handbook on how to make the most of feedback from your teachers when a test is returned:

  • What specific feedback did your teacher give you and how should you use that feedback?
  • Will you be tested on these topics again or are they important for overall understanding in this subject?
  • Which areas do you need to ask for help on as you still don’t understand?
  • Which questions from your test paper should you re-do? Re-do them!
  • Should you re-write any questions or essays and re-submit?
  • Was there any revision work you did not complete before the test?
  • What topic areas do you need to review and revise, what should you do to address these?
  • Are there topics you still need to finalise study notes on?
  • Are there sections of your study notes that you need to re-do?
  • Did you plan to give yourself enough time to revise?
  • What changes do you need to make in the way you study for that subject next time?
  • Are there students who did well that you can talk with to find what they did differently?

Year 11

Students have settled back in to Term 2 really well. Many Redlands staff have been impressed with all our student volunteers who have been filling in for the Yr 12 Prefects while they are on exams. It has been pleasing to see the willingness and helpful attitudes displayed by those students and I encourage all students to gain as much experience and exposure while it is available.

Yr 11 Mock Trial

The Yr 11 Mock Trial team had their second round this week against St Ignatius College, Riverview, which was the school that won this NSW Law Society competition grand final last year. In a  very tightly fought trial, Redlands was the prosecution in a common assault case against the defence from Riverview. Our barristers (Renata Ferreira and Ali Lawrence) did a great job in presenting evidence and cross examining the defence witnesses, instructed admirably by their solicitor (Emily Colvin). Our two prosecution witnesses (Leilani Heath and Maddie Howard) stood firmly by their story and handled the pressure of cross examination very well. The acting Magistrate was assisted by the Clerk of the Court (Stephanie Larcos). Redlands won the Trial and now go undefeated into Round 3 against Wenona in a couple of weeks.

Yr 12 (2020) School Jersey

Available to be purchased now! All students have access to the form on the Yr 11 Pastoral page on iLearn and parents can access the form on Redlands Pulse in the Yr 11 area. The form must be completed and returned to the Uniform Shop by Friday 17 May at the latest. Students can try on different sizes by visiting the Uniform Shop outside of school hours.

Red Shield Appeal

The Salvo’s Red Shield Door Knock is coming up on 29 May. The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army’s signature fundraising drive which helps fund their vast network of social and community services.

The Red Shield Appeal began in 1965 and is promoted under their recognisable symbol – the red shield. Each year, The Salvation Army appeals to the Australian community for donations to ensure they can give hope where it is needed most through their social welfare and community service programs.

Every year a small army of Redlands Yr 11 students conduct the door knock around our local Cremorne community. We will be looking for about 100 students to team up into groups of four. They will be allocated a zone with specific streets to cover. We meet at school on Sunday 29 May at 8.30am and after completing their territory, they return to school to bank the funds and have a BBQ. Please encourage your child to participate.

Formal correspondence around examinations has been emailed to Yr 10 parents. Students can also download a copy of the Examination timetable from the Yr 10 Pastoral Page on iLearn.

Yr 10 Visual Arts

Our Yr 10 Art students will be working with the Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence (RKMAiR), Cameron Robbins. Some students have already been fortunate to meet Cameron and to spend time with him learning about his art practice. Cameron has selected a site on Senior Campus to build a site-specific artwork. He is a contemporary drawing practitioner with an exciting and innovative practice. Cameron creates structures that respond to the environment, particularly the wind and weather and from the harnessed energy, drawings are created. I would encourage you all to look at Cameron’s website, particularly his videos to gain an understanding of his work.

Amazon Web Services Summit

A reflection by Yr 10 Student Ela Yohannan

Last Wednesday, Redlands IST students had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Amazon Web Services Summit. It was a truly incredible experience. The day began with a presentation, where AWS invited several of their partners to show us how they used technology. Representatives ranged from companies such as Canva, a design platform for anyone, to companies such as Formula 1. The presentation opened our eyes and showed how much of an influence technology is on every sector of a person’s life. This even included machine learning and artificial intelligence. It’s undeniable, that a major part of our future careers will involve technology. Later, we attended a panel with representatives from AWS, such as Glen Gore – The Head of Solutions Architect at AWS. We learnt a lot about what the technology industry was like, leading all of us to think about possible futures in technology.

AWS also allowed us to explore current technology, having an activity which needed computational thinking to solve a maze puzzle involving Spheros – a spherical robotic toy. The goal was to create the maze and code the Sphero to complete the maze in the shortest time. The activity was challenging but nonetheless fun. To end our day, we had a project involving Alexa – Amazon’s virtual assistant. Introduced through Alexa, the project involved creating questions and programming a quiz on Alexa for another team. It was a wonderful way to end the day. Overall, we had an amazing time, as we were able to see where and how technology will advance and it gave us a better picture of the world ahead of us.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

Currently students are learning about Personal Finance in Commerce, and producing a finance portfolio website throughout the term, setting themselves up, hopefully, for effective financial management later in life. Part of this course involves students getting jobs, saving for items and learning the value of money. The article this week makes an interesting read, as the author states that all teenagers from the age of 15 should have a part time job to help them understand the value of money, regardless of socio-economic status.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students have begun looking at another of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens (Sean Covey), specifically, ‘Seek first to understand, then to be understood’ which is ultimately regarding how they can listen more effectively. These habits were introduced to the students in Yr 8 and I have attached a link to a preview of the book, if you are interested in further reading.

Social Awareness Program

Students have begun the second topic regarding addressing inequality in Australia, namely Inequality in Indigenous communities. They are currently getting to know the issue by researching factors such as how indigenous people often have a shorter life expectancy, higher rates of infant mortality and lower levels of education and employment.

NAPLAN

Yr 9 Students are expected to participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to assess literacy and numeracy skills. Testing will take place on Tuesday 14 May (Language Conventions and Writing), Wednesday 15 May (Reading), and Thursday 16 May (Numeracy) from 11.05am to 2.35pm. On Friday 17 May students will have an opportunity to catch up any tests they missed. Students need to bring a school calculator on Thursday 16 May for the Numeracy Test part A that requires a calculator. Students will be provided a pencil to complete all tests. Further information about NAPLAN can be found in the NAPLAN parent information brochure. Following the tests, all parents across Australia will receive results in a common reporting format. It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia. More information is available on the National Assessment Program website.

NAPLAN

Yr 7 Students are expected to participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to assess literacy and numeracy skills. Testing will take place on Tuesday 14 May (Language Conventions and Writing), Wednesday 15 May (Reading), and Thursday 16 May (Numeracy) from 8.20am to 11.05am.

Announcements and Upcoming Events
  • We are incorporating a lot of conversations around students taking pride in their own appearance and their belongings. Students are reminded to revisit the guidelines for proper uniform on pages 19 and 20 of the Student Planner. There are also many belongings being left around the student lockers, in common areas at recess and lunch and in the restrooms.  Students should be locking all personal items in their lockers throughout the day. Lockers can hold a backpack and students should be locking their bags inside their locker. Students are encouraged to ask a teacher for assistance if they are needing support with their physical organisation.
  • The Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection can be viewed for the first time at Redlands School. The Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years, is a remarkable collection of artworks which provides a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty, Lindy Lee amongst others. Parents will also have an opportunity to meet Cameron Robbins, contemporary artist, who is leading the Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence (RKMAIR) program. Cameron is at Redlands 6 – 17 May working with students and staff creating a site responsive artwork on the Senior Campus. Tickets available here. Drinks and canapés will be served during the evening. This is a parent only event. For more information, please visit our website.

Vertical Student Connections Between Sections

One of the benefits of being a P-12 School are the opportunities for students of all ages to connect and interact with each other. This vertical integration comes in many shapes and forms: Secondary students welcoming younger ones on gate duty at the Junior Campus, buddy Year Groups between Junior and Prep, House connections at events like carnivals or through activities such as Performing Arts and Sport where students across age groups, and sometimes families, can come together over a shared passion or interest, to name but a few examples.

Having spent over 13 years at Redlands, one of the joys of my role and other longer-serving Junior School staff, is also seeing students leave us at Yr 6 and how they grow and flourish in the Secondary School environment.

Just this week, I enjoyed a combination of both of aspects as I spent time on Wednesday afternoon observing over 50 of our Secondary School students spend time after school with even more of our Junior School students as part of a Numeracy and Literacy support program that we have had now had in place for a few years. Ahead of these sessions, Junior School supervising teachers hold training classes for the older students and mentor them as they navigate their mentor leadership role.

Service in the School or local community is an important Secondary School opportunity and experience for our older students, many of whom relish the chance to return to the Junior School and assist younger students in this way. For our Junior School students, it was delightful to see their positive connections with older Redlands students and also their responsiveness to this aspect of mentoring that the School encourages.

For some of the Secondary students, there was also the lovely aspect of being in the very shoes of the Junior School students not that long ago and I enjoyed reflecting on that point with a number of them.

NAPLAN – Yrs 3 and 5

Next week sees students across Australia in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is more commonly known. Our teachers have been preparing their students to ensure that they are appropriately prepared for these formal assessments and our starting point is always to ensure that the students not feel any undue pressure, that they are familiar with the format of the tests, and that we provide the conditions for them to do their very best, all that we can ever ask of them. This was a message I relayed to students in assembly and encourage similar messages at home.

Baby News

After finishing last Friday to commence maternity leave, PDHPE teacher, Ms Jacqui Longworth gave birth to a healthy boy, Charlie, on Monday this week. Jacqui and Charlie are doing well and we look forward to a visit from them later in the term.

Yr 4 Visual Arts

Yr 4 are working on a unit of work that coincides with the artist in residence program at Redlands. The inaugural RKMAiR artist Cameron Robbins, is an artist who makes artwork that responds to, and as a result of the immediate environment, which Yr 4 students have been investigating. During his residency, all of the Yr 4 students will get an opportunity to go to the Senior Campus and watch Cameron Robbins in action with our Visual Arts teacher, Ms Reinhold. During their time with Cameron Robbins, they will have an opportunity to talk to him and ask him about his work and practice. Yr 4 students will then explore kinaesthetic and action-based artworks in the classroom as part of this topic.

This is a wonderfully rich and exciting opportunity for Yr 4, which I know that they will appreciate and learn from.

Bush School

The weather was perfect for the start of the Term 2 Kindergarten Bush School program which commenced this week. This hands-on, experiential learning program based on regular visits to Manly Dam over the course of the term, gives students a chance to connect their studies of the Australian bush in Inquiry Units to the natural setting. Bush School further provides an environment for children to explore their potential and enables them to connect to nature, use cooperative thinking skills, problem-solve, take calculated risks and build motor skills.

It is exciting to observe the learning and thinking dispositions, developed by the children in Bush School, translate into the classroom resulting in greater gains in key learning areas and Units of Inquiry. Given this is the School’s seventh year of Bush School, we are noticing that these gains are maintained and are continued by the children in Yrs 1 and 2, especially as they begin their first Outdoor Education Programs later in the year. Throughout the term, several staff from the Senior Leadership Team will be joining the Kindergarten classes to explore and learn alongside the students. Thank you to those parents who will also be joining the classes each week, your assistance is important and appreciated for the continuance of the Bush School program.

Staff News

Congratulations to Jacqui Longworth and her husband, Ben, on the safe arrival of baby Charlie this week. Both are doing very well and we look forward to a visit in the future.

Trading Cards

In past years, students have been given the responsibility of bringing in trading cards to enjoy with their friends during Recess and Lunch. To allow students to play, develop friendships and settle into their new classes before they begin negotiating skills with trading cards, it was decided that this activity would begin in Semester 2. This term, I have had requests from some students who are keen to begin this process earlier in the year. By way of compromise, I would like to allow the students to bring in their trading cards on Fridays only, where they will play and be supervised within the Friendship Club area. The staff would like to support the children in developing their skills of cooperation, turn taking, negotiating and discussion that can be promoted through trading card games. If you would like your child to participate in this activity, please complete and carefully read the conditions associated with trading cards play on this letter and return to the Prep Reception or your class teacher.

Illness

The cooler days are certainly upon us and to this end, I would like to remind you of the part you play in keeping our community healthy and well. Most coughs and colds are caused by germs called viruses and they are passed on by coughing and sneezing the virus into the air. If your child is unwell with a fever, runny nose and cough please keep them at home to reduce the chance of spreading their infection to others.  Some useful information pertaining to this can be found here. Thank you for your close attention to this matter.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

The Junior Campus will be holding a Mother’s Day Celebration tomorrow, Friday 10 May, beginning at 7.45am. This year our mothers will be spoiled with breakfast treats followed by an exciting morning of activities in the Kindergarten, Yr 1 and 2 classrooms. We look forward to sharing this special morning with you. Please be aware, the morning drop-off and parking is very busy on this day and your attention to correct parking procedures is appreciated.

Coming Together for Worship

Redlands is a school in the Anglican tradition and as such we have a weekly Chapel service for all students. The Chapel services are designed to be age and stage appropriate for all students. Last year in the Prep School each class led Chapel for their peers. They chose the songs, retold stories in a variety of ways and shared prayers. Students used a variety of Creative Arts and Technology to support their learning and experience in Chapel. It was lovely to hear when reviewing Chapel with the students, that their favourite Chapel was the service they led. Several parents also showed interest and asked to attend. Currently, parents who wish join us for worship are invited for Easter and Christmas services. We would like to warmly extend this invitation to attend when your child’s class is leading. Chapel times are 9.30am for Kindergarten and 10.00am for Yrs 1 and 2 and all Chapel services are conducted in Parkes Hall. If you are able and would like to attend, please enter through the Preparatory Reception area where you will be asked to sign in and out. Redlands House/Transition Gold

Mother’s Day Activities and Morning Tea

Redlands House will be holding a Mother’s Day Celebration on Friday 10 May, beginning at 9.30am with classroom activities, followed by a shared morning tea outside in the playground. You are invited to bring some morning tea to share with your child, along with a picnic rug or chair for your comfort. We look forward to welcoming you as we celebrate this special day. Seniors and Transition Gold Excursion

In the coming weeks, all Seniors and Transition Gold Children will visit the Eco House and Garden at the Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre at Terry Hills. The Kimbriki Eco House and Garden is a unique education centre dedicated to exploring how to live in a more sustainable way – a place for children to experience, learn and be inspired. This experience will educate students and staff in ways to live more sustainably, and empower our children to construct knowledge, explore values and develop an appreciation of the environment and its relationship to their world. Excursions such as these, lay the foundations for an environmentally responsible adulthood.

Eye Screening

The STEPS Eye Screening Program will be visiting Redlands House next week and will be testing children who have turned four years old this year. This is a government service that screens all children who will attend school next year. Please ensure that your form is signed as soon as possible so that your child does not miss out on this important free screening opportunity.

Waste Free Wednesday

From the beginning of this year, the Senior class children at Redlands House have been undertaking Environmental Education with Mrs Haverhals and Ms Kennedy. In these lessons, the children have been learning about worms, composting, recycling and the impact single-use plastic has on our environment, especially our oceans. They have been introduced to Take Three for The Sea, which encourages them to make a difference to our oceans by taking three pieces of rubbish with them when they leave the beach (under adult supervision). As a community, we are all trying very hard to do our share of sustainable practices. We invite you to join us in our war on waste by sending your child in every Wednesday with a package free, healthy lunch. Together, we can educate our future generations in sustainable living and practices.

Concussion in School Sport

Sport related concussion is a growing concern in Australia. There has been plenty of media and research into the prevalence, incidence, diagnoses and treatment of the injury. It is important our community is aware of the most recent research into this injury and to understand the processes involved in its diagnoses and treatment. Recently Sport Australia released its position statement on concussion in sport. This has been a collaboration between the Australian Institute of Sport, Australian Medical Association, Australian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians and Sports Medicine Australia and forms the overarching policy for all national and state sporting associations underneath it.

Concussion affects athletes at all levels of sport, from the part time recreational athlete to the full time professional. If managed appropriately, most symptoms and signs of concussion resolve spontaneously. Complications can occur, however, including prolonged duration of symptoms and increased susceptibility to further injury. There is also growing concern about potential long-term consequences of multiple concussions. Over recent years there has been elevated public awareness of sport-related concussion and increased focus on the importance of diagnosing and managing the condition promptly, safely and appropriately. (Dr L Elkington, 2018)

At Redlands, we are affiliated with multiple sport associations and have well-developed processes for any incidents of concussion that may occur within our school programs. It is important that our school community is aware of the current process involved in the diagnoses, treatment and recovery of a concussion as outlined in the Sport Australia Concussion statement, the Independent Sporting Association policy and the Redlands Concussion Protocol.

All parents and students should note that once a student has been formally diagnosed with concussion by an accredited medical practitioner, there are several defined steps that are required for that individual to be able to return to school (also known as return to learn) and eventually returning to play (this includes both training and playing of a specific sport). Of note in the process is a compulsory 48 hour deliberate physical and cognitive rest period immediately after a diagnosis. As a guide for all things with concussion “if in doubt, sit them out”, any injury to the head carries significant short term and long term risk so it is important for the safety of all students in our care that we assess any return to sport and school thoroughly.

We ask all parents in our community to familiarise themselves with these protocols and processes found on Redlands Pulse.

Athletics

This Friday we start our sprints training down at Balmoral Oval with Mosman Athletics Club. All those interested should speak with Mr Ellis in the Sports Department. It will run from 3.30pm (bus departing Redlands) until 5.30pm (bus returning to Redlands).

Cross Country

Cross Country training starts this Friday with information found on Redlands Pulse – Cross Country. We are looking forward to a great upcoming season. The bus will depart the Adams Centre at 3.30pm and return at approximately 5.30pm (training will finish around 5.00pm)

Hockey

Last weekend saw the opening round of our 2018 Hockey season with the 2nds and 3rds teams travelling to BMGS while the 1sts team played against Barker. The 3rds girls had a great first game with the first half starting strong with all the girls supporting each other with great chat on the field. In the second half Redlands had the ball in their half for most of the time and had our first win of the season with a 2-0 score. The 2nds girls game was pretty similar to the first game, with the first goal in the first half. The girls had the advantage at goal with many short corners in the second half, working together well and using each other for advantage and won 2-0. The 1sts team had their first game against Barker and after some great play and attacking work, the game was 1-0 our way. Unfortunately the attacking run didn’t continue and although there was some spectacular saves in goal and some awesome work out of defence, we conceded a 7-1 loss.

This week will see all three teams play their Home games using Barker College as the Home field. Game times can be found on the Redlands Rhino.

Netball

The ISA Netball season began on Saturday with all teams playing away. With a number of mixed results across the board, the games all seemed to be played in great spirits. Our 1sts went down to a strong Oakhill 1 team but the team were very positive after the game and are looking forward to taking on Central Coast this weekend. Our 2nds had a tough loss to Central Coast and will look to bounce back when they travel to Chevalier this weekend. Our 3rds and 4ths teams had different results both with strong wins against Central Coast and Barker respectively. They take on SACS and Oakhill this weekend. The Senior 5ths had a tough trip out to Oakhill on Saturday. Our Inter A team played Barker who have been dominant in the Inter division for a number of years. With lots of positives taken from the game, they will look to start strongly this weekend against Chevalier. Our Inter B are another team with back to back travel weeks after a narrow loss to BMGS over the week. They take on Central Coast this weekend.

This weekend the NSNA are hosting their charity Pink Round. They are encouraging all players, coaches and supporters to wear a touch of pink to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer Research.

Rugby

The Redlands Rugby season kicked off in strong fashion against SACS over the weekend with all of teams playing their first matches of the season.

Our 1st XV put together one of the strongest, most cohesive second halves, running in five tries to nil as they swept through SACS defence time and time again, finishing the match off with a comprehensive victory of 45-5. Wonderful efforts from our forwards Luke Brown, Ron Lev and Nicholas Armstrong combined brilliantly with our outside backs with Flynn Garner, Harrison Garrett and our Captain, Cameron Pascoe running amok.

The focus of this week’s Note Day report must go towards our newest players to the program who, in a tough and gritty match, came away with an incredible 17-12 victory. The defensive efforts across the whole match were amazing with players like Daniel Lev, Alfie Leach and Harrison Winder making try saving tackles again and again against the SACS forwards. In attack, Hugo Scott was everywhere in the first half, ducking through contacts and sending players like William Algar away on long downfield runs. I would like to mention the efforts of Jacob Pamenter who tackled everything that moved and was dominant with his ball carries. He unfortunately went down early in the second half with an injury along with Hugo. Credit must go to the whole team, how they responded as a group, making their tackles and scoring two hard fought second half tries. Hugo Little was one of the players who went to another level, making two amazing runs through the defence, a perfect combination of footwork and brute force. In the end, a brilliant first up win for our Under 13s and a wonderful stepping stone to a great first season in Redlands Rugby.

Swimming

Last Wednesday and Thursday we had six students competing in the CIS Swimming Championships. Xander Halfen (Yr 7) swam across four events in the U12 Boys, finishing 10th in the 50m Freestyle, 12th in the 50m Butterfly, 9th in the 100m Freestyle and 6th in the 50m Backstroke which is a fantastic achievement. Ruby Voyce (Yr 7) showed great speed across her events in what was a very competitive age group finishing 5th in the U12 Girls 50m Freestyle, 9th in the 50m Butterfly, 11th in the 50m Breaststroke, 9th in the 100m Freestyle and 5th in the 50m Backstroke. Olivia Donoghue (Yr 10) swam extremely well in her U16 Girls events placing 6th overall in her 50m and 100m Freestyle as well as 9th in her 50m Butterfly. Sam Virtue (Yr 9) was impressive in Butterfly, placing 10th in the U15 Boys 50m and 12th in the 100m. Chloe Jennings (Yr 7) finished 8th overall in the U13 Girls 50m Freestyle, and Sienna Wessels (Yr 8) finished 14th overall in the U14 girls 100m Freestyle. Unfortunately, our Junior Girls relay of Jasmine Black (Yr 7), Chloe Jennings (Yr 7), Ruby Voyce (Yr 7) and Sienna Wessels (Yr 8) were disqualified in the Junior Girls 4x50m relay, but they thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to race.

A huge thank you to the following Yr 11 students who volunteered their time on Wednesday night (session 1 of the CIS Championships) to assist with timing: Harry Algar, Luke Brow, Greta Feldmann, Riley Felton, Harrison Garrett, Aoibheann Maclochlainn, Anna McCormack, Phoebe Rathbone, James Reid, Anna Saunders, Olivia Simpson and Alexandra York.

Tennis

The first round of both ISA and NSTA Tennis was played on Saturday. ISA teams played against St Patricks College. St Pat’s played with confidence and determination forcing Redlands to play their best tennis to be competitive each point. Redlands 1sts fought hard to pull off a win by just one game, a fantastic effort. Redlands Teams 3, 5 and 6 also had great wins.

Just a reminder that in Div 2-13 sudden death deuce is to be played, receiver picks the side. The first round of NSTA tennis saw many students playing their first ever Tennis match, which was great to see.

Just a reminder, all students play each week unless they have received an exemption for that particular Saturday. A slight change in format for the NSTA competition will take place starting this Saturday 11 May: all sets will be first to 4, tiebreak at 3-3. This should allow students more time to successfully complete each set. Well done to all Tennis players this week, it has been fantastic to see so many Redlands students playing and enjoying the game.

Sports Captains Up and Away

Stella Simpson Morgan and Lachlan Carmichael are both living up to their Sports Captain status this week representing NSWCIS at NSWPSSA Championships in Tennis and Boys Basketball respectively. Stella is representing in Inverell and Lachlan in Maitland. I look forward to bringing everyone news of their endeavours next week. In sad, but true news, both Stella and Lachie were disappointed to miss this weeks Cross Country Carnival and on prior form, were both a great chance to make the Redlands Cross Country team, but student athletes can’t always do everything on offer!

IPSHA Football (Soccer)

What a wonderful week it has been for Junior School Football. Whilst many other matches were rained off last weekend, our Yrs 3, 4 and 5 teams all enjoyed dry feet and the true bounce off the Junior Campus Oval even after Friday’s heavy rain.

After our Yr 3 teams set the tone for the day with some amazing play, well beyond their years Matthew McLellan (Yr 5) showed off his bravery and skill, pulling off a series of heart stopping saves in goal before trying his hand up front and nailing the go ahead goal in the first Yr 5 match. Max Taylor shone with two follow up goals.

Our Yr 6 teams ventured to Trinity and our B team fought hard for a well earned draw. The C team dominating and winning 6-1.

This weeks matches are all as per the original draw. Match times to be confirmed from that draw are:

5C – 8.00am at University Oval, Macquarie University Playing Fields, cnr Talavera and Culloden Roads, North Ryde

5B – 8.45am University Oval, Macquarie University Playing Fields, cnr Talavera and Culloden Roads, North Ryde

5A – 9.30am University Oval, Macquarie University Playing Fields, cnr Talavera and Culloden Roads, North Ryde

Our Yrs 5 and 6 teams are both fairly tight on playing numbers, partly a deliberate strategy to increase meaningful playing time and partly forced by the number of players we have. It’s really important to us that we don’t have players standing on the sidelines waiting for game time and I’d rather see players supporting teammates by turning up early and having an extra game before their scheduled match or sticking around to play a later match. Coaches will be asking for players to help – if you’re available it’ll be guaranteed extra playing time.

Rugby Sevens

Great wins from both teams set the season off on the right foot and there was some real excitement from coaches and spectators about the team play and commitment, especially from our younger lads. Matches for this week have been emailed to players.

Yrs 3/4: 8.20 vs Newington Field 4 then 8.40am vs Coogee Field 1
Yrs 5/6: 10.00am vs Coogee Field 4 then 10.20am vs St Pats Field 6. All matches are at Koola Park.

Rugby skills training will be on the Junior Campus Oval Friday from 7.15am.

IPSHA Hockey

Our Hockey girls (pictured at top) began their season last Saturday with a tough match and a narrow loss. The defensive effort by the team was fantastic and the team camaraderie was exceptional. Hockey at Redlands is in great hands with this bunch of committed and talented Hockey crazy kids coming through! The draw and team roster and details have been sent to all registered players.

AFL

Our AFL Boys went within a whisker of spoiling Barker’s first AFL home match on their main college Oval and showed some real commitment to their footy. In a seesawing match which twisted and turned until the last few minutes, first gamers Alex Ramsay and Flynn Evans Beard showed great endeavors whilst Captain Lachlan Carmichael nearly stole the show with late goals. Passion around Redlands and AFL Football is no more apparent than in our team coach Nic Hurrell, Redlander and current North Shore Bomber Premier Division player, who phones in to me after each quarter with an energetic and colourful explanation of the quarter’s play, before letting me listen from afar to his coach’s address to the team. I’d love some action shots from the AFL boys.

The draw for the AFL season is available on Redlands Pulse and has been emailed to players. AFL training will be on the Junior Campus Oval starting this Friday from 7.15am and is open to all interested in AFL Football.

Netball

There was a great turnout of nearly 50 students to training this Wednesday morning. Thank you for attending. Leonie Stewart is something of a coaching guru and her weekly Wednesday before school clinics are well worth it! Leonie is keen to pack as much time into the sessions as possible and her and the coaches will be starting their Wednesday session at 7.00am in Dunnet Hall NOT 7.15am. Please arrive at 7.00am to make the most of this wonderful opportunity to work with an iconic Netball coach.

Rain hampered Friday night Netball this week. Please remember the NSNA website gives the most up to the minute info regarding court status and is the best resource for competition info. Mrs Ellis filters information from the NSNA out as quickly as is possible, but the source may give more immediate information.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

For all trainings on the Junior Campus Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible we can find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.

Photos

We love having photos on display and to help archive our seasons, anyone who has any action shots they’re proud of and willing to share, please forward to acarter@redlands.nsw.edu.au
