Year 9
Careers Information
Redlands Careers Advisor, Simon Salier, has begun speaking to Yr 9 students, introducing the idea of choosing further education courses and exploring different career opportunities. Careers will be a focus in Yr 10, with career assessments and interviews being part of the Pastoral Care program.
STEAM
Congratulations to the four top groups who were asked to present to the Environmental Prefects and senior management last Friday on how to reduce Redlands electricity usage and ultimately become a sustainable school that has a positive impact on the environment and also reduce costs for the school. The presentations were all excellent and a special mention goes to the winning group who suggested that the school introduce solar panels to produce energy and motion sensors in classrooms to automatically turn off lights when empty. The students who presented the winning ideas were Callum Wardman-Browne and Jack Walsh.
Social Awareness Program
On Thursday Yr 9 students ran a BBQ and bookstore fundraiser with all proceeds going towards Room to Read. The bookstore was compiled of books donated from all Year Groups in the school and these books were then bought by students, donating a gold coin to Room to Read.
Interesting Article of the Week
As students receive their examination marks back in the coming days, and as a parent of a Yr 9 boy also receiving his marks, I found myself reading this article about the importance of parents and teachers working together to provide the best environment for children to grow and develop resilience. Juggling both hats of being a teacher and a parent, I often find myself conflicted with how I should behave as a parent if my child is unhappy about an outcome at school. This article provides some interesting advice from the perspective of the teacher and is also in line with information given to parents earlier in the year from Dr Judith Locke and her book The Bonsai Child.
I hope you have a great week!
