Issue 36 2019 - 21 Nov 2019

From the Principal

The end of last week saw the culmination of the Year 8 and 9 STEAM projects. Congratulations to the Year 9 top groups who presented their recommendations to Senior Management and to the Environmental Prefects on how the School could minimise its carbon footprint and reduce electricity consumption and costs. The overall winning team, representing Cowper, was comprised of Lilly Dijkstra, Jude Eden, Asher McBride, Sophie MacLachlan, Jack Walsh and Callum Wardman-Browne. On Friday Year 8 students shared their solutions on protecting the Great Barrier Reef to Year 7 students and student leaders. Well done to all students on this excellent application of their learning and thank you to all the staff who mentored and guided the students in these STEAM projects.

Today our Year 8 and Year 10 students participated in a Science Symposium where they presented their individual and team research projects, as well as enjoying a Science show presented by Dr Robert Carman from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Macquarie University. I very much enjoyed judging the Year 10 research projects and seeing the depth of thinking displayed by the finalists as they presented their research findings.

I am delighted to advise that last Friday, students and staff from right across our Preschool to Year 12 school raised $6533 for the Red Cross Bushfire Relief and Recovery Appeal with the mufti day and Senior Campus sausage sizzle. Thank you sincerely to all families who so generously contributed to help those affected by the bushfires.

I also wish to congratulate George Murphy (Year 10) who was awarded the Emerging Talented Athlete of the Year at the Ski and Snowboard Australia Community Sport Awards at a special ceremony in Canberra. Well done George.

Lastly, I sincerely thank all of the families who have supported the final stage of the New Learning Hub Appeal. Your donations for the final fit-out of this wonderful development are greatly appreciated. If you still wish to secure your Family Plaque on the Donor Recognition Wall, please visit here or learn more in the Foundation section of this week’s Note Day.

60 Year Reunion of Class of 1959 – Luncheon at Redlands Hall

Last Friday we welcomed our Old Girls from the Class of 1959 who enjoyed a catered lunch, student musical performances and strolled through memory lane. They were touched by having the possibility to sing the school song with our students.

“I was particularly moved when the children sang our version of the school song, bringing us all to our feet automatically as if we were still at school.”
Judy Blix, Class of 1959

Speech Night

STEAM Week Presentations

On Thursday and Friday last week, Yr 8 and Yr 9 students gave their final presentations for their respective STEAM projects. On Thursday, Yr 9 students presented business proposals to staff and student leaders on how Redlands could become more sustainable and reduce its electricity consumption and costs. Some of the proposals consisted of installing solar panels; using sensors in classrooms to monitor lighting, heating and cooling; and installing window tinting. On Friday, Yr 8 students presented to Yr 7 students, students leaders and various staff members where they shared their solutions on ways to help protect the Great Barrier Reef. These solutions ranged from sustainable fishing practices and giant kelp farms, to filtration systems and measures to combat invasive species. I was fortunate enough to attend both presentations and was impressed with the creativity, thoughtfulness and problem solving skills on display. A big thank you to all the teachers who have worked for months to arrange these exciting learning opportunities last week.

Yr 10 Camp

Unfortunately, due to weather conditions and bushfire warnings last week, we had to alter the scheduled Yr 10 Camp. However, we were still able to run an alternative activities program for Yr 10 students on Thursday and Friday. This program took place off site at Balmoral and the Sydney CBD on Thursday and was facilitated by Redlands and staff from our camp provider, Outdoor Education Group. Students participated in an urban challenge, as well as leadership, initiative and team building activities, on these days. While it was disappointing we were not able to run our usual camp program, we believe these alternative arrangements still allowed Yr 10 students to develop some of the areas of focus from their original Yr 10 Camp program.

Bushfire Appeal

Last Friday there were a number of fundraising efforts at the Secondary School to raise money for the Red Cross Bushfire Relief and Recovery Appeal. We thank everyone for their generosity as we raised over $2,500 to assist the many individuals and communities affected by the devastating bushfires which have ravaged the state.

Yr 7 2020 Orientation Day

On Tuesday we welcomed the incoming Yr 7 2020 students for their Orientation Day. It was a wonderful opportunity for these students to learn more about the Secondary School, meet their Year Group and partake in a number of activities to give them a taste of next year. Much of the day was facilitated by our current Yr 10 students who will be Yr 11 Peer Support leaders next year and it was great to see their leadership throughout the day.

Redlands Sailing Cup

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to watch our sailors compete in the inaugural Redlands Sailing Cup against Cranbrook. The Redlands Sailing Cup provided an opportunity for our Sailing team to put their skills to the test in a competition against another school. The day was a huge success and I would like to thank the Redlands Sports Department and Sailing coaches, as well as the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, for providing our Sailing team with this wonderful opportunity. Overall, we have had a very successful start to our summer sports season this term and I wish our teams all the best in these final few weeks of the year.

Staff Appreciation Morning Tea

On behalf of the Secondary School teachers and staff, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many parents and students who assisted in organising the Appreciation Morning Tea on Monday. Your gestures of gratitude meant so much to so many people who work in the Secondary School and was just a further illustration of the wonderful sense of community and partnership that we have here at Redlands.

Science Symposiums

Today, students in Yrs 8 and 10 presented their final projects as part of their Science Symposiums. Over the past few weeks they have been researching scientific areas of their choosing and today was a culmination of their efforts. It was great to see their creative and critical thinking skills on display and I would like to thank the Science Department and, in particular, Ms Christine Shorter for their efforts in organising these symposiums.

Service and Social Engagement

Mary’s House Christmas Gift Wrapping

Again this year, students in Yrs 10 and 11 have an opportunity to sign up to volunteer at the Myer Christmas Gift Wrapping stand. Volunteers are needed to assist with Christmas gift wrapping at Myer Chatswood in the school holidays. All funds raised are donated to Mary’s House, a shelter in the North Shore of Sydney supporting women and their children who need help because of domestic violence.

Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker

Please consider making a contribution to our Christmas donations drive. Add a couple of small things to your christmas shopping list to go towards the Redlands Anglicare Toys ‘n’ Tucker drive. Anglicare aim to share the joy of Christmas with people in need through Toys ‘n’ Tucker. Throughout November we will be seeking donations through Tutor Groups for a range of items on the shopping list below. Next time you are at the supermarket consider picking up something extra to bring in for the collection. Nothing needs to be wrapped as all items will be sent to Anglicare who will then make up family specific boxes to be distributed. Your donations will mean that another family will have some of the Christmas cheers that we may take for granted.

Young People’s Plan for the Planet Team

A small team of Redlands students are in the final stages of planning to represent the school and the state of NSW at the It’s our Future Earth 3.0 Conference in Singapore at the beginning of December. Lachlan van der Pluijm (Yr 12), Aymon Holth and Aayushi Singh (Yr 11) and Max Currie and Olivia Reid (Yr 10) have worked with an extended team throughout this year and are now looking forward to collaborating with students from schools from across Australia, Singapore, India, and Mauritius. This STEM project provides students with an opportunity to meaningfully apply their knowledge and skills to address the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and identify meaningful strategies to improve sustainability for NSW.

Year 10

ABW

Next week Yr 10 students will be participating in Australian Business Week (ABW).

The program is an in-school intensive learning experience that provides students with an insight into the world of business. It is unique in that it consolidates students’ learning and bridges the gap between secondary school and the business community. This is a program that has been running successfully at Redlands for over 15 years and forms an important part of our Term 4 experience for Yr 10 students.

Students will be required to wear full school uniform for the duration of the week.

Student Achievements

George Murphy was recognised at the Ski and Snowboard Australia Community Sports Awards on 7 November in Canberra, where he was awarded Emerging Talented Athlete of the Year. We congratulate George for this significant commendation.

Jameson Prescott has been selected to compete in the Musto International Youth Match Racing Championship and Harken Racing Regatta through his participation at the RSYS. We wish Jameson every success as he competes over the next two weeks.

Yr 7 Orientation

On Tuesday the Secondary School welcomed the new Yr 7 cohort for 2020. Our Yr 10 students rose to the occasion and were outstanding ambassadors and mentors for our new Yr 7 students. It was wonderful to see our 2020 Peer Support Leaders engaged with the new students and we were incredibly proud of their efforts.

Cambodia Trip 2020

Next year, in the 2020 December school holidays, students from Yr 11 have the opportunity to travel to Cambodia and immerse themselves in Cambodian life. Redlands has had a connection with Cambodia for over 20 years and this will be the fourth year we have partnered with Antipodeans to provide this opportunity for Yr 11 students.

Students engage in a range of cultural immersion and service activities. This includes:

  • Working on a community project in a remote village located near Siem Reap. Last year’s group helped build and renovate a patient room at the community hospital.
  • A guided tour of the Killing Fields and Touel Sleng S21 Genocide Museum.
  • A visit to M’Lop Tapang. This organisation was founded by Redlands Alumni back in 2003 as an initiative to offer safety to vulnerable children. The organisation now works with over 5000 children and families to provide services, meals, shelter, medical care and education. Throughout the day students are introduced to some of M’Lop Tapang’s services and participate in a Child Safe presentation.
  • A day tour of Angkor Archaeological Park, which includes the famous Angkor Watt Temple.

This program gives students a wide range of experiences, while developing their understanding of Cambodian culture and history. It is designed to both educate and challenge students, helping them to embrace the concept of being a global citizen.

Please note, this program involves fundraising to support the community project and M’Lop Tapang organisation. Students are also required to complete six after-school learning sessions to help prepare and maximise their experiences in Cambodia.

All parents and students are invited to find out more at the Information Evening this coming Monday 25 November at 6.15pm in Redlands Hall. If you will be attending please RSVP at here.

Careers Information

Redlands Careers Advisor, Simon Salier, has begun speaking to Yr 9 students, introducing the idea of choosing further education courses and exploring different career opportunities. Careers will be a focus in Yr 10, with career assessments and interviews being part of the Pastoral Care program.

STEAM

Congratulations to the four top groups who were asked to present to the Environmental Prefects and senior management last Friday on how to reduce Redlands electricity usage and ultimately become a sustainable school that has a positive impact on the environment and also reduce costs for the school. The presentations were all excellent and a special mention goes to the winning group who suggested that the school introduce solar panels to produce energy and motion sensors in classrooms to automatically turn off lights when empty. The students who presented the winning ideas were Callum Wardman-Browne and Jack Walsh.

Social Awareness Program

On Thursday Yr 9 students ran a BBQ and bookstore fundraiser with all proceeds going towards Room to Read. The bookstore was compiled of books donated from all Year Groups in the school and these books were then bought by students, donating a gold coin to Room to Read.

Interesting Article of the Week

please read

As students receive their examination marks back in the coming days, and as a parent of a Yr 9 boy also receiving his marks, I found myself reading this article about the importance of parents and teachers working together to provide the best environment for children to grow and develop resilience. Juggling both hats of being a teacher and a parent, I often find myself conflicted with how I should behave as a parent if my child is unhappy about an outcome at school. This article provides some interesting advice from the perspective of the teacher and is also in line with information given to parents earlier in the year from Dr Judith Locke and her book The Bonsai Child.

I hope you have a great week!

End of Year Reminders

There have been an increasing number of students wearing their PE uniforms to school, not changing into their full school uniform after morning sport or not changing after PE. Students will receive a formal detention for not complying with this school policy and we are reminding all students to ensure they do change at the first available time slot, either before school, during Recess, during Lunch or immediately after Period 6. Thank you for your support in this effort.

While summer is just around the corner, students are reminded that classes are still in full effect and curriculum continues to be covered. Some students have needed further reminding of classroom expectations and requirements as they enter these last few weeks. We appreciate your support in reinforcing this message at home as well so students can use these last classes to set the tone for the beginning of their Yr 9 learning experience.

STEAM 2019

Last week, the STEAM and Pastoral teams worked with Yr 8 to creatively find solutions to protecting our environment by looking at the declining Great Barrier Reef due to overfishing, climate change or human impact. Students defined and discovered problems, dreamed of future visions and designed solutions. On Friday, students produced a prototype and partook in the STEAM Expo, promoting their innovative ideas to Yr 7, our Service Prefects and Mr Sean Corcoran. Congratulations to all involved, especially to those who were awarded a Top 5 position or a People’s Choice selection:

We are seeking unwrapped donations of non-perishable Christmas food items and toys. All students are encouraged to bring in something to contribute. Items will be collected during Tutor Time throughout Term 4. A list of suitable donation items can be found here.

Fiji Service Learning Opportunity

Next year, in the 2020 October school holidays, students from Yr 9 will have the opportunity to travel to Fiji and immerse themselves in Fijian life. This is the fourth year that Redlands has partnered with Rustic Pathways to provide this opportunity.

The trip is split into two sections. The first is spent in a highlands village, where students are accommodated via a homestay program and engage in a range of cultural immersion and service activities. Following this, students return to the coast at Rustic Pathways Momi Bay Base. During this time, students work with a Marine Biologist to assist and learn about environmental management of the surrounding reef and coastal area.

This program gives students a wide range of experiences, whilst developing their understanding of the Fijian culture. It is designed to both educate and challenge students, helping them to embrace the concept of being a global citizen.

All parents and students are invited to find out more at an Information Evening on Thursday 28 November at 6.15pm in the Roseby Library on the Senior Campus. Any questions should be directed to Mr Colyer at scolyer@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Summer Recommendations from Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills Website

Summer provides the perfect time for students to revisit their filing system and determine where they might keep their assessments or notes from this year that they might need again for subjects next year. It might also be the time to clean out and determine a better way to organise for Yr 9 after some reflection on how this year went. How can you help at home? Additional tips can be found here. Year 7

This Week

It was exactly one year ago when our incredible Yr 7 cohort was taking part in their rising Yr 7 Orientation Day. This week our new cohort of rising Yr 7 students was on campus and it was incredible to watch the interaction among the senior students and their reactions to the Yr 6 students. Conor Petersen and Cadence Austin volunteered to offer their advice and tips of what they have learned in their first year in the Secondary School. It all seems not that long ago and this cohort has grown so much as they prepare for Yr 8.

Assistance Dogs Australia

As students continue to raise money for Assistance Dogs Australia, the dogs and their trainers came to visit our cohort last week for students to see first-hand what their time, effort and donations are supporting. Valuable information was shared and the pups prepared a presentation of their skills so far in their training. While the Yr 7 Coin Challenge and Bake Sale are complete and were a huge success, the following two fundraisers are still underway:

Silly Sunglasses Day – tomorrow (Friday), students are invited to wear silly sunglasses to school for a gold coin donation.

Pet Photo Competition – running through Weeks 5 and 6, students are submitting the cutest, funniest and most unique photo of their pet through iLearn for a gold coin donation. Winners will be chosen by the students and announced Friday Week 6.

Again, all funds collected support training a dog through Assistance Dogs Australia.  Thank you to all the incredible and creative Yr 7 students who have led these fundraising efforts.

Maths Olympiad Competition

This year, more than 37,000 students participated in The 2019 Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) including a number of Redlands students. The questions are unique in that they focus on the students’ ability to solve mathematical problems in a creative manner as opposed to simply reaching a solution using a prescribed method.

Students completed 5 separate papers over 5 months and compete in teams of up to 30 students. Three Redlands teams from the Junior School, consisting of students from Yrs 4, 5 and 6 took part in the competition.

I am delighted to announce that the Yr 5 and 6 Numeracy Enrichment team has once again finished in the top 10% of teams and has been awarded an Outstanding Team Achievement plaque. Congratulations to all the teams and participants and in particular to the following students who scored highly.

All the students who competed in the competition will receive a certificate that will be presented at assemblies over the next week. Mrs Ling and the class teachers wish to congratulate all the students who participated with great enthusiasm and gusto. Part of the benefit of participating in this type of competition is the opportunity it gives students to tackle complex mathematical problems and to share thinking and strategies when discussing the paper afterwards and I know that Mrs Ling has been very impressed by the range of ideas and thinking that students displayed.

Yr 5 Science

In Units of Inquiry this Term, Yr 5 is studying Light. The overarching idea of the unit is based on how light is essential to our existence and the students have been experimenting with and exploring the different properties of light, including shadow, reflection and refraction. Their learning has extended to see how our eyes use light to see and consolidate their understanding of the anatomy and function of the eye.

To enable the students to further develop their understanding of how the eye works, each Yr 5 class took part in eye dissections which took place in our Secondary School Science Labs, under the watchful eye and assistance of Mrs Harrisson (Head of Science) and her team. There was an air of excitement (and reservation!) amongst the students, as the classes set off across the footbridge; however, I am pleased to report that each and every lesson was a resounding success and the students relished the opportunity to learn in the Secondary School Science laboratories. My thanks are extended to Mrs Benneyworth for her part in the organisation of these sessions and also to all of the Science teachers and technicians on the Senior Campus who gave the Yr 5 students their time and expertise to make this immersive learning opportunity possible for them all.

Yr 7 2020 Orientation Day

On Tuesday, our current Yr 6 students spent an important day on the Senior Campus as part of their transition to Secondary School next year. Joined by their parents for the first part of the day, I spoke with many of the group who shared excitement about the opportunity to meet new friends, spending time in a range of exciting specialist classes and also simply wandering around the Senior Campus and starting to familiarise themselves with soon-to-be new surroundings.

Bushfire Fundraiser

Thank you to Junior School students and families who generously contributed $2093 to the bushfire relief funds from our mufti day last Friday. The event was also held in the Secondary and Early Childhood sections of the School.

Lost Property

We will endeavour to repatriate all lost property before the end of term but as we approach the end of term, parents and students are reminded to check lost property before the end of term for missing items. Any unlabelled clothing or lunch bags will be passed on to the next school sale or given to charity as we clear the area for the end of the year.

Yr 2 Science

To support the Yr 2 Unit of Inquiry on Materials, Mixtures and Solutions, Yr 2 participated in an incursion last week. Run by Fizzics Education, the students participated in a 1 hour hands-on workshop, which allowed them to explore the properties of different materials and how these can be changed, combined or separated as part of different mixtures and solutions. The students thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to learn and explore new concepts in an engaging way and some of their thoughts are below.

  • It was great when Kate showed us the water bottle ‘trick’.
  • I learned that adding in different chemicals, can change what happens to a solution.
  • I learned that there is iron in Weetbix! We managed to separate it during one of or experiments.
  • I enjoyed seeing unexpected things happen and learning new things!
  • I liked seeing how everyday materials that we might have in our house can actually be scientific.
NSW Bushfire Mufti Day

Thank you to the immense generosity of the Preparatory Redlands community, a sum of $1940.00 was raised and this, combined with the Junior and Secondary Schools’ efforts, will be donated to the Red Cross Fire Appeal. This was also a good opportunity for classes to use their numeracy problem solving skills as each class calculated their funds. An additional $400 was raised from the recent Yr 1 disco, which will also be dedicated to this appeal.

Exporting Content on Seesaw

We hope that you have enjoyed seeing your child’s learning on Seesaw throughout their time in the Preparatory School. For any student who is leaving the Preparatory School this year and all Yr 2 students progressing to Yr 3, we will be archiving your child’s activity on Seesaw from January 2020. After this time these families will no longer be able to view any activity. If you would like to keep a copy of your child’s work that has been shared on Seesaw you can download and save it to a personal computer. Instructions on how to download student content has been written on Redlands Pulse. All students in Kindergarten and Yr 1 who are continuing at Redlands will continue to see their learning on Seesaw, you do not need to save anything yet.

Lucy Hill Library

Great news – the Premier’s Reading Challenge certificates have arrived and your child will be bringing home his/hers next week. Congratulations to the 145 students who completed this challenge. It is so good to see such a large number of students and their parents enjoying the pleasure that comes from reading together. This initiative, instigated by the State Government to encourage home reading, has certainly been a wonderful way to guide library reading choices. We look forward to another big year of reading in 2020. If you did not take part this year, please consider getting involved next year. Borrowing for the 2019 year has now concluded. As the Library staff reconcile inventory over the Christmas break there will be no parent borrowing during this time.

Musical Theatre Soirees

It was a pleasure to attend the Musical Theatre soirees on Monday where Kindergarten students presented their singing, dancing and drama performances for their families. I was sad to have missed the Yr 1 and 2 performances due to clashing events which can often happen at this busy time of year, however, I am told it was equally as entertaining. I have been promised an encore performance and a private viewing next Monday which I am very grateful for. Thank you to all the Musical Theatre teachers for their commitment to the students throughout the year and to Ms O’Neil and Ms Daley for their organisation of Drama.

Investigations in TG

Transition Gold have been investigating and problem solving with their Yr 5 buddies. An interesting project started when Leah (TG) came up with an idea to make clothes out of paper. After brainstorming and reading the book What do you do with an Idea? by Yamada and Besom, the class decided to think up ideas for themselves. With 28 ideas in the class, TG asked for help from Yr 5 buddies. Watching their ideas come to life with the use of technology was very exciting as the Yr 5 students used their iPads to make documentaries and films. A special thank you to Mrs Bennyworth and her Yr 5 class, for helping TG and showing the younger children what you can do when knowledge and passion come together.

Weekly Results

Basketball

Round 4 had most of our teams travelling outside of Sydney for their fixtures. The A Girls teams travelled together to Chevalier, with all three teams leaving victorious. The 1sts Girls had a very close game, going basket for basket against an undefeated Chevalier side for the first three quarters. It wasn’t until the final quarter that our fitness and intensity paid off, and Redlands won. The Junior A Girls were up next and after finding it hard to put the ball through the basket in the first half, found themselves down by ten at the half-time break. A great second half saw the team string together some great passages of play for a seven point win. The Inter A Girls were the final game posting a huge 41-17 win to continue their undefeated streak heading into Round 5.

The 2nds Girls were up against Oxley’s 1sts Girls team. After a slow start, our team found themselves down 24-0 by half time. Regrouping in the second half saw the final score as a 30-22 loss, which was a great effort from our girls to pull back the lead. The Inter C Girls were elated to get their first win of the season with a 20-14 victory and showed some great improvement throughout the game. The Junior B team finished with another fantastic win over St Paul’s and the Junior C’s fell short to a strong Oxley side.

The A Boys teams played in Bathurst. The 15A and 17A Boys were up first, with the 15As posting an impressive 70 point win over St Stannies. Our 17A Boys finished up with a ten point win, followed up with the 1sts who, despite being low on players due to injury, battled hard and finished up with a 79-74 win. The 13A and 14A Boys were the final two games of the day and both teams had fantastic wins.

The B Boys teams played against all of Oxley’s A teams. The 15B Boys played one of the most exciting games of the round, their game going into double overtime and finally golden point. Finishing the game out with only four players, we still manged to win. The 14B Boys only had five players, despite a loss to the Oxley A team they fought hard to the final siren. The 13B Boys proved too good on the day, continuing their great form this season, while the 17B Boys had a 15-20 loss. The 2nds Boys were up against Oxley’s 1sts team in what was expected to be a very tough game. Our boys came out firing from the start and as the game progressed managed to decrease the gap in the scoreline each quarter. The 15Ds also travelled to Oxley, and proving to be a very strong team this year, finished with a 33-6 win to continue their winning streak.

The C Boys teams played at Oakhill, where the 15Cs had a strong 44-16 win, as did the 3rds with a 31-15 victory. The 17C and 13C both played hard but Oakhill proved too strong on the day. The 4ths Boys had a very close contest, finishing the game with a very narrow 23-24 loss. The 13D and 13E Boys also travelled to Oakhill for 12-31 loss and a 27-23 win respectively.

To view the current standings for your team, please follow the link to the ISA website.

Sailing – Redlands Cup

Over the weekend the Redlands Sailing program hosted the inaugural Redlands Cup against Cranbrook. With over 45 sailors competing in 16 boats and two divisions, there was a lot of close racing between the two schools. Sailing close to the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, the teams completed thirty races across five hours with a steady breeze from the south-east.

In the teams racing Aiden Young (Sailing Captain, Yr 12) and Jameson Prescott (Yr 10) led the two Redlands teams and managed to secure seven wins collectively over their ten races. Unfortunately, Cranbrook managed to gain a two point advantage heading into the final series but our Redland sailors continued to perform well in their petite final against each other with Redlands 2, led by Jameson, placing third overall.

In the fleet racing, the three Redlands teams led by Harry Winton (Yr 10), Alex Gibbs (Yr 9) and Oliver Noakes (Yr 8) competed on the Squadron’s fleet of Elliott 7s keelboats against two of Cranbrook’s strongest sailors. The shortened course for the fleet racing kept the boats close to each other and kept the sailors on their toes as they looked for small wind shifts that would give them an advantage. At the end of the day, there were only 12 points between the five teams with Redlands 2, led by Alex, placing second behind Cranbrook’s best team.

The Redlands Cup will be held again in 2020 with more schools from across Sydney and NSW invited to compete.

What was evident on the weekend was the leadership skills that a sport like Sailing develops. In every crew each student had a defined role for which they are held accountable. This is all led by the skipper of the boat. Managing the varying factors of competitors, environment (wind and water) and crew. All this makes for a very interesting mix of skill and character development within a sport. I applaud all of our sailors in their tenacity, drive and poise shown in a high pressure situation such as the Redlands Cup. I look forward to seeing our Sailing program continue to flourish in the years to come.

Photos, courtesy of Darcie Collington, can be found here

In other Sailing news, Jameson Prescott (Yr 10) has been selected to compete as part of the RSYS’s Youth team at two international match racing championships from 20-29 November. These two competitions are part of the world youth match racing circuit and lead up events for the Youth Match Racing World Championship at the end of February 2020. All the coaching staff and sailors wish Jameson luck at the two competitions.

Snowsports

Congratulations to George Murphy who was recognised at the Ski and Snowboard Australia Community Sports Awards on 7 November in Canberra, where he was awarded Emerging Talented Athlete of the Year for Moguls. He was also nominated for the Young Achiever of the Year for 2019.

Tennis

The Redlands ISA 1sts (Seb Dobson, Phil Hilble, Aymon Holth, James Robinson and Tristan Wong) will be playing in the Australian Schools Tennis Challenge in Albury from 23 – 27 November. This is the first time Redlands has sent a Tennis team to compete in a national competition. They successfully qualified by winning the Division 1 shield in the ISA competition. A fantastic achievement that has led to an amazing opportunity.

This week was the last round match for Term 4 with nine of our top ten teams all having great wins to set many of them up for a top two finish in their division and a finals place. Many of the students new to Tennis this term have been mastering their serve during training and are slowly but surely being more successful during their matches on Saturday which is great to see. Just a reminder it is an expectation that students support their team each and every week by watching and cheering their Tennis partners singles and other Redlands matches that may be playing at the venue.

The Finals/Playoffs are on this week. All teams will play. Teams who finished 1st or 2nd in their division will play in the final, all other teams will play for a position, 3rd-6th. Congratulations to the following teams who have successfully made the final this term: Teams 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 16, 24. Redlands 5 narrowly missed out on the final by one point. Well done.

A new NSTA competition will start early Term 1 and will run for six weeks (five round matches and one finals/playoffs match). Training continues as normal for the remainder of the term in preparation for the Term 1 competition.

Touch Football

A number of teams travelled to Oxley with some mixed results. Our Senior 1sts bounced back after a defeat to Barker with a strong win over Oxley College 8–4, the girls will be looking to improve this week when they take on Barker College again in what will be a tough outing at Macquarie on Saturday morning. Our Senior 2nds came up against newly entered Oakhill College, who were strong from the outset. The girls dug deep but Oakhill proved too strong. Our 3rds travelled to Oxley also and looked to dominate early in the match, with some strong running up the middle, the girls made some good breaks and managed to take the game 5-2. Our Senior 4ths had a great win on Saturday overcoming Barker College.

Our Juniors had a much tougher time over the weekend, with our Junior As going down to Oxley 2-6, and our Junior B team going down 2-3 to Oxley also, both teams worked hard throughout the match but have some key areas to work on. Our Junior C team took on St Spyridon, losing 0-3. Our Junior D team have been showing improvements each week, focusing on little passing exchanges and running onto the ball, however unfortunately they had a hard week playing a well drilled St Pauls team.

This week our 1sts, 3rds, 4ths and Junior B teams play at Macquarie taking on Barker and St Andrew’s. Our 2nds, Junior A, C and D teams are all away at Blue Mountains Grammar (bus departing Redlands at 6.45am). All games times and fields can be found on the Redland Rhino

Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently in a Representative Sport and there are sessions across all mornings Monday-Friday 6.25-7.45am with additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday.

I would recommend that all students looking to build for their Summer sport seasons 2019/2020 and also the Winter Representative sports use these sessions as a way to prepare physically. Sports such as Basketball, Rowing, Tennis and Touch Football all require a level of strength and flexibility all of which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre.

There will be High Performance Testing done across all of next week (Week 7) so all students are encouraged to attend. This will be a further chance for athletes who have already tested to see where and how they have improved.

Please contact Mr Gooding directly for more information on individualised programs and or the High-Performance Program.

Basketball

IPSHA Mixed Basketball

More strong team play from our A-D teams at Dunnet Hall last week led to four great wins in Dunnet Hall over Sydney Grammar School. William Wu scored 14 points in the A match, whilst Jack Hutchings topped the B team with 8 points in a match where the Redlands scoring was well shared around. Chris Stevens was on fire with 25 points in the C match. Heidi De Saxe and Digby Scott led the way for the D team. There are exciting prospects for Redlands Basketball in 2020 with 4 of these 5 top scorers coming from the Yr 5 group.

Time and Venue Changes

There are some changes to the Basketball matches this week. Teams A-D are playing at Newington Wyvern Campus, 115 Cambridge St Stanmore D at 7.30am, C at 8.15am, B at 9.00am and A at 9.45am.

Matches scheduled for Dunnet Hall have been shifted to Lang Gym and the times have changed: H team now at 7.30am, G team now 8.15am, F team now 9.00am and E team 9.00am.

Yrs 3 and 4 A and B teams are now at Lang Gym: B team at 10.30am and A at 11.15am.

Girls Basketball

Redlands Gold and Red both travelled to Tara last weekend and played great team games, coming away with wins. The Red team managed 40 points in a scoring cavalcade, Syrah Hargreave topping the girls with 12.

Gold girls were really well matched up against Pymble and only the deft team play of Ava Mills, Jove Hazell and the finishing of Ruby McDonald were the difference in a 22-21 win.

Cricket

The Petersen brothers are really enjoying their stint in the same team. Liam and Rowan equal top scoring with 11 runs a piece in our tally of 8 for 96. The Redlands boys are getting closer each week and have solid contributions with the ball and in the field from everyone, Luke Shoosmith and George Procter turning the tide of the game with two athletic run outs.

Tennis

Redlands Tennis also looks to be in great shape with another strong win from our team against Waverley at Cammeray last week. All of our ranks 1-8 were dominant across both singles and doubles matches. This weekend our ranks 1-8 take on Trinity at Trinity Tennis Centre, 55 King St Canterbury from 7.30am.

Ranks 9-20 and any other non-ranked rep players are encouraged to attend Cammeray from 8.00am this Saturday, where the players will be put through a series of singles matches to try and help build experience in match play.

The End of Year Concert tickets are now on sale. Please contact The Concourse or call 1300 795 012 (Ticketek).

Make Up Requirements

As in previous years, all make up for the Preparatory and Junior school students is provided and applied by Redlands staff and parent volunteers on the day of the Concert. However, we do have a number of students with allergies and therefore we do offer the option of students bringing their own make up on the day.

All students need to bring their own black mascara. Any black mascara will do, however we do recommend Maybelline Sensational Lash, as its tends to be smudge proof and longer wearing.

For those students who wish to bring their own make up, we are applying a pink lipstick for Cinderella (Ballet – Act 1) and red for Jazz, Contemporary and Tap (Act 2). The red lipstick is a typical fire engine red and can be found across any brand of lipstick. The pink lipstick is a softer rose inspired pink. Suggestions are Rose Records (Rimmel), Softsilver Rose (Revlon) and Raspberry Ripple (Sports Girl).

Both the Rimmel and Revlon lipsticks can be found at any Priceline or Chemist Warehouse.

The eye shadow we will apply to all students is a subtle pink-light brown smoky eye. Again this is a common eye shadow palette found across all make up brands. A few suggestions that can be purchased from Priceline, Chemist Warehouse or even your local supermarket are Revlon 505 Decadent and Maybelline City Mini Palette.

If you have any questions regarding make up please don’t hesitate to contact me: virginiaclayton@mac.com.
