Year 9

Social Enterprise Commerce Excursions

As part of the current Commerce unit on Intrapreneurship, Year 9 were very fortunate this week to be able to visit a number of social enterprise businesses to learn about their marketing strategies, and more importantly their vision and purpose.

The organisations that very graciously hosted us for the morning were: Studio A, CandleXChange, Welcome to Country, The Raise Foundation, Rooftop Bees and Architectus.

I was lucky to accompany the group who attended Welcome to Country and the Tranby Co-operative  in Glebe with 30 students. We were given a brief tour of the shop front and warehouse prior to receiving an incredibly informative presentation from Marketing Director, Megan Branigan on the organisation’s history and values. Megan highlighted in great detail the organisation’s target market, strategic direction and challenges faced. Students were then given some time to consider and develop questions about the presentation, before engaging in a Q&A session to gather information for their upcoming Commerce assessment.

There were a wide variety of experiences between each group and I hope that students came home on Tuesday afternoon and discussed their key takeways.

The excursion forms part of the current assessment task requiring students to respond to real-world business challenges. There were also a number of relevant links to several of the Humanities subjects studied at a senior level, where an understanding of social enterprises is starting to form an important part of the curriculum.

A huge thank you to the Year 9 Commerce teachers, for organising and providing such a rich, real-world learning experience.
