Issue 24 2024 Term 3 Week 4 - 15 Aug 2024

From the Principal

Back in the first week of Term 3, our Year 12 student leaders organised a whole of Secondary School student led assembly to kick off the second half of the year. The theme of the assembly was “Why Redlands?”, and each of the Secondary School captaincy pairs shared their reflections on what they love most about Redlands and what they have valued most from their schooling experience.

It was quite an affirming and moving experience for me to hear these personal and passionate reflections from our Year 12 students as they are coming to the end of their Redlands journey. The spoke of the close-knit community; the authentic spirit of giving; the supportive environment; and the endless opportunities to discover and develop their passions – just to name a few.

Over the past year and a half, I have been meeting individually with each staff member and asking them the same question, “What do they love most about Redlands?” Pleasingly, and not surprisingly, the staff’s answers resonated with the students’ ones: our strong sense of community and supportive environment; our focus on student growth and wellbeing; our innovative and progressive culture; and our diverse and inclusive environment.

And for me? What do I love most about Redlands? Well, my answer is quite simple, and it is the same answer that most of the teachers shared with me. It is the students. They are that EV battery giving energy and joy, not just to me, but to so many of the other staff each and every day here at school.

Over the past few weeks, it has been wonderful to feed off that energy and see the students thrive across so many different areas of the School, whether it was the excitement of the Prep School students at their various Olympic events; the passion of our Junior School students at their House Athletics Carnival (despite a bit of rain); the growth of our Year 10 students at Winter School; or the talent of our Year 11 students in their performance of Away over the weekend. I look forward to seeing our students’ lights continue to shine brightly at many other events over the rest of the year.

It has been a big week for many of our musicians over the past week with the stellar Junior Music Festival on Thursday and the Junior HICES Music Concert last night with Redlands students in Years 5-8 joining musicians from over 40 coeducational independent schools from across NSW for a performance at the Town Hall. Congratulations to all of the student performers and a thank you to our dedicated music staff who make these opportunities possible for our students.

The Redlands Musical is always a highlight on our school calendar, and we are excited to announce that the 2025 musical will be Disney’s smash hit, High School Musical. Further information can be found in the Secondary School Section of Note Day.

Giving Day

The countdown is on as we get closer to our inaugural Giving Day next Wednesday 21 August, in support of our High Country Campus expansion and Coralie Amos OAM means-tested scholarship. I sincerely thank those very generous members of our Redlands community who have either volunteered their time next week or already made their pledges to this philanthropic campaign.

Community Update

On Wednesday of next week we are excited to launch our first ever Giving Day, a major philanthropic campaign in support of the High Country Campus expansion and our means-tested scholarship in honour of Redlander Coralie Amos OAM.

View Informational Video

Giving Day promises to be a fantastic day of celebration that will have a transformational impact for our students. I will personally be a part of the Giving Day team and look forward to connecting with members of our community on the day as a donor where we have 24 hours to reach our giving target of $400,000. Thanks to the incredible support of our matching gift donors, every donation on this day will be tripled, increasing the impact of everyone’s contributions significantly. We are also deeply grateful for our Giving Day ambassadors who are working for and with our community to advocate for this important campaign.

For more information about our Giving Day and how you can still get involved, please visit the Foundation section or follow this link.

Redlands Supporter Gear

Our Redlands Supporter gear has been selling well following its launch last week … the wet weather jacket is proving popular given we seem to be supporting our children in the rain most Saturdays!

Our launch range has been designed with passion and precision to represent the spirit of our players, teams, supporters and School whether you’re cheering from the sidelines and stands or supporting from afar.  The Redlands Supporter range can be viewed and ordered here with Polos and Jackets available to be tried on for size at our Uniform Shop to ensure correct fit. Please note that this range is for parents, carers, friends and alumni of Redlands, and not for our students.

Our Redlands Supporter gear is a community driven program with all profits returned to the Redlands community for investment in community programs.

It was a pleasure to join the Redlands Parents and Friends Association meeting this week. We are so grateful for our active and passionate parents who continue to explore and deliver ways to keep our community connected, included and supported.  Further information on upcoming activities and events, including end of season celebrations and award presentations, can be found here.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Inaugural Giving Day – Wednesday 21 August – Less than a Week to Go

With our inaugural Giving Day just around the corner, I would like to remind everyone how significant impact this event will have on the development of our High Country Campus which was developed thanks to the very generous support of our Redlands community more than 30 years ago.

Here’s the exciting news: thanks to our amazing matching gift donors, every donation made on the day will be TRIPLED! We’ll be sharing updates throughout the day to spread the word. A heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who are kindly giving their time to make this day a success.

To get inspired, please take a moment to watch a message from Jennie Cadman, a current parent and Redlander:

You can join us today and make your donation ahead of time

Leaving a Legacy Together

Redlands has a long history and tradition of philanthropy.

The generous contributions from parents, alumni and staff have been crucial to the growth and success of our School. As you may know, Redlands receives one of the lowest Government grants of any school in NSW, and school fees alone aren’t enough to fund the major developments that shape our campus.

Past appeals have supported many important projects, including:

  • Peter Cornish Building, 2002 (Junior Campus)
  • Roseby Science Building/Liggins Atrium, 2007 (Senior Campus)
  • John Roberts Centre, 2018 (Senior Campus)
  • Redlands Learning Hub, 2020 (Senior Campus)
  • Fahl Garden, 2021 (Senior Campus)

We also take great pride in providing opportunities for those in need. Through the Redlands Foundation Scholarships, we’re able to welcome talented students who might not otherwise have the opportunity of a Redlands education. Thanks to your generosity, we currently offer 6 Redlands Foundation Means-Tested Scholarships.

Every Contribution Matters

Philanthropy is a personal journey, and your consideration of a gift means so much to us. No matter how large or small your gift is, your contribution will help create a Lifetime of Possibilities for our students and future generations to come.

Susan Rothwell AM, Redlander 1965

We are honoured to welcome Susan Rothwell AM, Redlander from the Class of 1965 and Chair of the National Art School in Sydney to open the Student Art Exhibition on Wednesday 28 August 5pm at Redlands Hall, showcasing works across a variety of mediums by students from Year 3 to Year 12 HSC.

Susan is a practicing registered architect, visual artist and horticulturalist. She has been on the Foundation Boards of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Historic Houses Trust and North Foundation. Susan holds a Bachelor of Architecture and an Honorary Doctor of Architecture from The University of Sydney. She is a Lifetime Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects.

Pauline Lam, Redlander 1987 – visited from New York

It was lovely to catch up with Pauline Lam, Redlander 1987, during her visit from New York.

Pauline has been a great Redlander Ambassador for those in the US, particularly in New York and on the East Coast, where she has coordinated informal alumni gatherings and is a regular at our US Chapter Virtual Meetings.

Pauline loved seeing all the recent development at Redlands and shared with us some of her global experiences in the finance industry, including positions in Sydney, Hong Kong and New York.

Currently, Pauline is developing Climate Risk Models for Citi and has recently completed her PhD. She has been a visiting academic at NYU Stern since 2019. She is also preparing to travel globally presenting her published research at conventions in Venice Italy and Florida US.

Thank you, Pauline, for sharing your precious time with us during your visit to Sydney and we wish you all the very best when you return to the Big Apple.

Announcing the Redlands Musical 2025!

We are excited to announce that Disney Channel’s smash hit movie musical will come to life on the Redlands stage in 2025!

5–7 March 2025

It’s the first day after winter break at East High. Students recount their vacations and look forward to the new year. Basketball team captain and resident jock, Troy, discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical that is being led by Ms Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well…

AUDITION INFORMATION

  • Auditions for the cast and band are open to students from Years 6-11 (Class of 2025).
  • Further details on the audition process, including deadlines and the parts available, is to be found here.
  • In preparation for auditions students will need to complete this form by Monday 19 August to gain access to the full audition information on iLearn.

Join the Japanese Culture Craze: Fun, Food, and Friendship Await

Every Thursday at lunchtime in Room L 2.1, students have the chance to dive into various aspects of Japan and engage in exciting activities in the Japanese Cultural Activity Club.

In our recent session, students had a fantastic time creating ‘Onigirazu’, a delicious Japanese rice sandwich made with fresh, authentic ingredients. This hands-on experience not only introduced them to Japanese cuisine but also offered a fun way to learn about Japan’s culinary traditions.

Why Should Your Child Join the Japanese Cultural Activity Club?

  • Cultural Exploration: Students will explore different facets of Japanese culture, from traditional arts to modern practices.
  • Interactive Learning: The club provides engaging, hands-on activities that make learning about Japan enjoyable and memorable.
  • Social Connection: It’s a great opportunity for your child to connect with peers who share similar interests and build new friendships.
  • Fun and Enrichment: Each session promises a blend of fun and educational experiences.

We encourage you to support your child in joining us every Thursday in Room L 2.1. It’s a wonderful way for them to broaden their horizons and immerse themselves in the richness of Japanese culture.

We look forward to welcoming your child to this exciting cultural adventure!

Lights, Camera, Film Making Action!

We are excited to share some highlights from our Film Making Club, a vibrant and creative space where students are developing skills that go far beyond the classroom. The club, led by Ms Rosie Peterson, runs every Wednesday afternoon from 3:20 to 5:00pm in L2.6.

In the Film Making Club, students dive into the art and craft of filmmaking. They are learning advanced editing techniques, the nuances of audio recording and the technical aspects of using cameras. Additionally, the club offers opportunities for scriptwriting and exploring drama, providing a comprehensive introduction to the film industry.

This hands-on experience is invaluable as it not only nurtures creativity but also helps students develop technical skills that are increasingly important in our digital age. Whether they are interested in pursuing a career in film or simply want to explore a new hobby, the Film Making Club offers a supportive environment for them to express themselves and collaborate with others.

If your child would like to join Film Making Club, please email drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation at City2Surf: Volunteering and participation for a cause

On Sunday, Charlotte Humphreys and Thomas Dewar dedicated their time to volunteer for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation during the City2Surf event. As the world’s largest fun run, the City2Surf attracts thousands of participants, making it the perfect platform to raise awareness for the Foundation’s vital work.

The Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to transforming the lives of sick children by funding advanced medical research, equipment, and world-class care at the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick. The Foundation’s mission is to ensure that every child receives the best possible care, no matter the severity of their condition.

At the finish line of the City2Surf, Charlotte and Thomas handed out water to exhausted runners for several hours. Their efforts not only provided much-needed refreshment to the participants but also embodied the spirit of giving that the Foundation champions. By supporting events like these, the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation continues to engage the community in its mission to create a healthier future for children.

In addition to the volunteers, congratulations to Lachlan Green, Annabelle Hwang, Jemima Hugman, Angus McInnes, Hiro Phillips, Tobe Cornelius, and Krishna Gupta who took part in the City2Surf. Their participation not only demonstrates their commitment to personal fitness but also highlights their dedication to supporting the Foundation’s cause. Running for a good cause, they joined thousands of others in the 14-kilometre race from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach, helping to raise both funds and awareness for the vital work carried out by the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation. Their involvement is a testament to the power of community in making a difference in the lives of sick children.

Together, they were able to raise over $2,500; however, they would love further donations. Here is also the link to their fundraising page.

Away by Michael Gow

Congratulations to our Yr 11 students for their incredible work in bringing Away by Michael Gow to life! This iconic Australian play, set in the late 1960s, explores themes of family, grief and reconciliation as three families navigate the complexities of life during a summer holiday. Your dedication and passion in portraying these powerful stories were deeply moving.

Your brilliant acting skills brought these complex characters to life, holding the audience’s attention from start to finish. The attention to detail in costumes and production design added depth to the performance, making the story even more impactful.

A huge thank you to our Director, Kathryn Smith, whose guidance and vision were instrumental in the success of this production.

Students involved: Max Perry, Charlee Kwintner, Josh Farrant, Freya Kittle, Tali Feldman, Krishna Gupta, Millie Winton, Eshan Eliatamby, Aneke Golowenko, Liam Petersen, Jasper Houchell, Ben Hanning, Sarah Zeppel, Eliza Draper, Remie Gibbs, Hiro Phillips, Megan Kirkpatrick, Abbie Sewell, Angus Baker, Jaiden Murphy, Betti Butcher, Jasper Hanly-Atmore, Serafina Scotting, Juliette Treloar, Louis Abrahams, Daniel Koppers, Andrew Macourt, and Jessica Lee.

School Climate Survey – Week 4

This week, students were invited to complete a School Climate Survey. The survey was anonymous and aimed to gather data from the student body regarding the climate at Redlands. It provided an opportunity for students to give feedback on the school environment, acknowledge peers who contributed positively, or voice any concerns. Once the data was collected, it was provided to the Year Advisor, Head of Secondary School, Counsellors and the Dean of Students. This information will help inform effective interventions and foster our inclusive community.

Year 10

Year 10 Leadership Project

Today the Assistant Dean of Students Ms Matthews spoke to Yr 10 about an exciting new initiative that provides Yr 10 students with valuable leadership opportunities as they support our Yr 6 Junior School students in their transition to Secondary School. This project is part of our ongoing effort to cultivate leadership skills, empathy and a sense of responsibility among our Yr 10 students.

The transition activities are designed to help Yr 6 students feel more comfortable and confident as they prepare for the move to Secondary School. Through these activities, Yr 6 students will connect with older peers, familiarise themselves with the Senior Campus, and gain practical experience in navigating their new environment.

As part of this initiative, Year 10 students will have the opportunity to be actively involved in three key activities:

1. Connection Session in the Arnold Library
Yr 10 students will lead connection games and activities during a special session in the Arnold Library. This session is designed to help Yr 6 students start building relationships with older peers in a fun and supportive environment.

         Time frame: 7:40- 8:30am

Two x Yr 10 Student Teams of 15 students

Dates:  -Term 3, Wk 5 Wednesday 21 August (next week!)

                       -Term 3, Wk 6 Wednesday 28 August

                      -Term 3, Wk 7 Wednesday 4 September

                      -Term 4, Wk 2 Wednesday 23 October

2. Year 6 Lunch at the Senior Campus
Yr 10 students will assist in guiding Yr 6 students during a visit to the Senior Campus, where they will experience lunchtime routines and explore the campus. This role gives our Yr 10 students a chance to mentor their younger peers, helping them navigate this new environment.

3. Term 4 Question Panel
Later in the year, Yr 10 students will participate in a question panel hosted by the School Counselling Team. They will share their experiences and insights about transitioning to Yr 7, offering advice and support to the Year 6 students.

These activities not only provide Yr 10 students with leadership experience but also allow them to make a meaningful impact on the school community. Students will be able to express their interest to participate via a Survey Form on the Yr 10 Pastoral Page,

Thank you for your ongoing support of our Yr 10 students as they embrace these leadership roles.

Year 10 Service Learning Initiative

In Term 3, Year 10 students will be participating in an exciting and meaningful Service Learning initiative. This program focuses on the important issue of homelessness and aims to engage students in understanding its causes, consequences and the broader societal impacts. Throughout the term, students will participate in various activities, including Tutor Time sessions, hearing from guest speakers and culminating in a full-day excursion to Cook4Good. This initiative is dedicated to preparing and distributing meals to homeless individuals in Sydney’s CBD, providing a hands-on experience that reinforces the concepts learned in Tutor sessions.

Learning Intentions:

  • Students will develop their reasoning and explanation skills.
  • They will explore the diverse perspectives that people hold regarding homelessness.
  • They will gain an understanding of the various factors contributing to homelessness.
  • Students will access and analyse health data to better understand the current state of homelessness in Australia.

We believe this program will provide invaluable insights and foster a deeper sense of empathy and social responsibility in our students. We look forward to supporting them in this journey of learning and service.

Week 5 is Book Week!

During Week 5 this term, the Redlands Library team will be celebrating Australian School Library Day, a significant event across Australian schools. Conveniently, it is wedged within Book Week, which celebrates the love of reading. Therefore, the entire week will be all about promoting the incredible resources that school libraries like our offer, highlighting the importance of qualified library staff and the impact libraries have on the school community at large. All week, students can take part in the festivities and share in the joy of literature within Roseby Library as well as some of their timetabled classes.

Year 9

Social Enterprise Commerce Excursions

As part of the current Commerce unit on Intrapreneurship, Year 9 were very fortunate this week to be able to visit a number of social enterprise businesses to learn about their marketing strategies, and more importantly their vision and purpose.

The organisations that very graciously hosted us for the morning were: Studio A, CandleXChange, Welcome to Country, The Raise Foundation, Rooftop Bees and Architectus.

I was lucky to accompany the group who attended Welcome to Country and the Tranby Co-operative  in Glebe with 30 students. We were given a brief tour of the shop front and warehouse prior to receiving an incredibly informative presentation from Marketing Director, Megan Branigan on the organisation’s history and values. Megan highlighted in great detail the organisation’s target market, strategic direction and challenges faced. Students were then given some time to consider and develop questions about the presentation, before engaging in a Q&A session to gather information for their upcoming Commerce assessment.

There were a wide variety of experiences between each group and I hope that students came home on Tuesday afternoon and discussed their key takeways.

The excursion forms part of the current assessment task requiring students to respond to real-world business challenges. There were also a number of relevant links to several of the Humanities subjects studied at a senior level, where an understanding of social enterprises is starting to form an important part of the curriculum.

A huge thank you to the Year 9 Commerce teachers, for organising and providing such a rich, real-world learning experience.

Year 8

Week 4 – Exploding Watermelons!

Exploding watermelons – yes, you heard me right! At Redlands this week, there have been a profusion of exploding watermelons. Why? Well, of course, because it is National Science Week.

Did you know that a stretched rubber band strives to return to its unstretched state; so, when a series of rubber bands are stretched around a watermelon, each rubber band tries to squeeze the watermelon rind in an effort to return to its previous happy relaxation. With each new rubber band, the compressive force acting on the watermelon increases, leading to a gradual change in the shape of the watermelon. The watermelon rind resists deformation until, without warning, it cracks sharply, releasing the pulp, which flies in all different directions – making a huge explosion sound – and the rubber bands emerge victorious!

This week, the Science department have engaged students in a range of activities to draw out their passion for scientific exploration and endeavour – and to learn amazing facts like those above. While I was not able to witness all the events this week, I heard positive feedback from Tuesday morning’s Breakfast with a Scientist event, and both saw and heard some of Wednesday’s exploding watermelon experiments. Just see the photos below!

Many thanks to the Science department for bringing their enthusiasm and knowledge into making it a great week of events.

Leadership in Style – Stage 4 Assembly

Earlier this week, our School Leaders’ Stage 4 Assembly looked a little bit different. With Yr 12 on Trial Examinations and Yr 11 leaders not yet selected, it was down to our wonderful Yr 8 SRC leaders, Kate Rintoul and Lily Musgrave-Kresa to run the assembly, supported by some Yr 7 SRC representatives.

Kate and Lily showed supreme poise and confidence as they discussed the recent Jeans for Genes day, reviewed Gala Arts and issued new Step Beyond awards. Congratulations to Amelie Moya Jones who was nominated for a Step Beyond award due to her constant support and care for peers across the cohort, and Mathew Krapovnitskiy who also received a Step Beyond award for his enthusiastic involvement in extra-curricular activities, including his recent convincing comic performance of ‘Who’s on First?’ at Gala Arts.

Service at Taronga – Ivy Flatman

This term, our focus in Tutor is on Service. As part of this focus, I have invited students to discuss in our Year Assemblies Service projects that they have been a part of that are external to the School. On Monday, Ivy Flatman shared with us the details of her current involvement in YATZ, Taronga’s Youth at the Zoo program. YATZ gives teens the opportunity to learn more about how Zoos operate, develop skills for the future and spend time with like-minded people who share a passion for animals and conservation. Members have the opportunity to take part in a range of training programs, volunteer their time with the Guest Services team or at Special Events, take part in campaigns and interact with Zoo guests.

Ivy gave a clear overview to the cohort, taking time to explain a recent training event she had been part of where they were taught how to facilitate Zoo access for people with mobility or access issues. Ivy’s volunteer support in this space, particularly her future aspirations to help support younger children having access to the Zoo is wonderful to see.

Bringing the Drama to English – ‘The Scottish Play’

‘Is this a dagger which I see before me?’ Well, maybe not, but we might be imagining one soon, as Yr 8 commence their study of Macbeth (or ‘The Scottish Play’ for the superstitious amongst us) in their English lessons this term. On Tuesday and Wednesday, 8B began to stretch their dramatic performance muscles, composing scripts, rehearsing and then performing short vignettes that reflected key moments from the play. Their energy and enthusiasm was wonderful to see (even though some of the scenes involved betrayal, violence and intrigue!) and I look forward to seeing how they and the cohort embrace their first study of a Shakespearean tragedy in the Secondary School.

Tutor Time Bonding

It is certainly true that we cover some important, serious topics in Tutor Time. However, we also continue to embrace the wonderful tradition of Fun Friday, where Tutor groups have an opportunity to relax, build connections with each other and just have fun at the end of the school week. Well done to Cowper Yellow and Dumolo Blue who really appear to have nailed their Fun Friday approach, with Henry Campbell running a Mario Kart competition for CY last Friday, and Lachlan Carter coordinating a table tennis competition for DB. Students enjoyed the opportunity for friendly competition in a relaxed setting.

Future Think Career Clusters Challenge Day

Tomorrow, Yr 8 will engage in an informative and exciting day where they will get to experiment with solving real world challenges with the support of guest speakers who will also share their career journey and insights with students. Students have all been sent full details, including their relevant Career Cluster groups, through the iLearn Pastoral Page announcements; so, they should check there for further information.

It is sure to be an eye-opening day. Thank you to Ms Green and our Careers Officers for coordinating the experience.

Week 5 is Book Week!

During Week 5 this term, the Redlands Library team will be celebrating Australian School Library Day, a significant event across Australian schools. Science Week

Science Week at Redlands School is a vibrant, themed event that brings STEM to life for students. Classrooms become hands-on labs where students might build solar-powered models or explore the physics of rockets. The school theme for National Science Week in 2024 is Species Survival – More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival of different species in an ever-changing world.

Redlands also hosts a school-wide Breakfast with a Scientist, where students listen to science in action and learn about real world projects. Additionally, students participate in competitions, like coding challenges or engineering design contests, fostering creativity and teamwork.

Science Week at Redlands School is designed to ignite curiosity and deepen students’ understanding of the STEM fields.

Student Reflections

The Breakfast with a Scientist event was interesting. I enjoyed the presentations from different scientists and found them informative about their work and career journeys. Plus, the breakfast was good too! I learned a lot from the presentations, such as the role of a patent lawyer and how AI works. My favourite presentation was the one about AI because it was fascinating to see how ChatGPT uses guess numbers and trial and error. Even though I missed two periods of class, it was worth it!  Ines Tan – Yr 7.

I enjoyed Breakfast with a Scientist, because I got to hear about streams of science that we don’t cover in school, like patents and medical science. I found it really interesting, especially computer science and patents, which I learnt a lot about.

It was nice to catch up with some friends outside of my year level as well, and to talk about what we learnt over some super yummy snacks! Alexia Tsacalos – Yr 7.

Chapel

CHAPEL @ Redlands is a fortnightly experience for Yr 7 and provides an important opportunity to connect with our key school values and foundational Christian faith. Through interactive games, bible stories, reflection and music led by our Chaplain Ms Kirsten Philips, Yr 7 are learning about faith, hope and peace and how this can impact their life at school and beyond. Each chapel, our students are encouraged to develop and deepen their experience of these ideas.

Community- Hear- Appreciate- Prayer- Encouragement- Love

Film Club

Come and join fellow Yr 7 Student and film making guru Jake Ikin in film club and learn what the movie world is all about. The club runs every Wednesday afternoon from 3:20pm-5:00pm in L26. We currently have 3 members and are keen on building this up so we can create our own short films to play in our assembly.

Students are encouraged to sign up at drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au and you can join anytime. In the club we learn about advanced editing, audio recording, using cameras, and will carry out some scriptwriting and acting. We can’t wait to see you there.

Shout Outs

Aashray So received a Step Beyond Award in our Stage Assembly for his authenticity and kindness in his everyday interactions with others.

Ines Tan received a Step Beyond award for her amazing efforts in the Junior School Music Festival. We received this beautiful email to commend Ines on her efforts.

‘I wanted to make known the incredible effort Ines put into Junior Music Festival as part of stage crew. It was her first event after joining Production at the beginning of this year, and she just thrived. She was placed on the opposite side of stage to the rest of us but handled herself beautifully. Many teachers commented on how her being there made their nights less stressful and she definitely had that effect on my night. She was amazingly competent around children barely younger than her, demonstrating her maturity. None of us could believe it was her first show, she was just that good.’

Well done to Kody Benoliel who shared his experiences as Student Representative Council Representative in our Stage Assembly on Tuesday.

Athletics Carnival

The damp conditions at yesterday’s annual Junior School Athletics Carnival did not take away from the excitement of this important event in the life of the School. There was plenty of House Spirit and camaraderie on display and I was struck by our students’ wonderful energy and superb participation, as well as some tremendous individual performances.  We will recognise our Age Champions and Runners Up at next week’s’ assembly on Tuesday. A huge thank you our valiant parent volunteers whose assistance was greatly appreciated. Thank you as well to the many parents who made time to attend the carnival to support their children. And finally a big thank you to the Sport department and wider Redlands staff team for running such a well organised and enjoyable event.

HICES Music Festival

After the recent impressive Junior Music Festival, I was delighted to attend the annual HICES Music Festival at Town Hall last evening. This concert featured a number of our very talented musicians who combined with 358 students from other HICES network schools to perform a wide repertoire of high-quality music. The opportunity to collaborate with new friends from diverse backgrounds, expert musical tutors and highly accomplished conductors over the 4-day build up to the concert, no doubt will be a valuable and memorable experience for our students. My thanks to the music team and our parents for your strong support of this event.

Parents Circles: Responsive Parenting and Raising Healthy Children

Being a responsive parent sounds simple enough, but living high-stress lives, often in isolation, lots of us know how nearly impossible it can be. Recognising that the essential condition for a healthy child’s development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults, I invite you to join me for regular Parents Circles.

The next Parents Circle will take place in Week 6 in the Prep Library, after school drop off. We welcome our Prep and Junior School parents to attend. Please feel free to bring your coffee or tea. As this is a parenting circle of support, numbers are limited to 20 to keep it small enough for interactive discussion, so please book your space here.

The topic for Week 6 (Wednesday), 28/08/2024 8.30 am – 9.30 am in Lucy Hill Library is:

Understanding Defence Mechanisms in Children

  • Defence mechanisms are often adaptive strategies for coping with stress and managing emotions. Understanding these mechanisms can help parents provide appropriate support and guidance to help their children navigate challenges.
  • Distinguishing between defence mechanisms and understanding the roles they play
  • What defence mechanism do I use as a parent and how does this impact my child?
  • Exploring what healthy coping mechanisms parents can use to navigate challenging situations and promote their children’s well-being.

2024 Book Week is Next Week!

Have You Got Your Hat Ready?

Book Week is nearly here, and we are excited about the 2024 theme, Reading is Magic

The purpose of Book Week is to foster a love of reading in children and to celebrate children’s literature. For that reason, we will celebrate in the Preparatory School by looking at two Australian picture books, The Concrete Garden by Bob Graham and an oldie, but goodie, The Magic Hat by Mem Fox.

There will be many activities happening in prep that week with the highlight being the Prep School Magic Hat Day on Tuesday 20 August.

Your child can come to school wearing a magic hat! They may wear just a hat, or the hat may be part of a whole outfit. Please talk to your child about who wears hats. It might be a book character. For example, a wizard or a goblin, but it might also be part of a person’s work clothes outfit. For example, a chef, fireman, magician, cowboy etc. Talk about the magic that their hat might possess. What can it do?

At our Prep assembly on this day, children will showcase their hats and talk about their magical properties, or they could even talk about what their hat symbolises or what its purpose is.

Book Week is also a good reminder to parents, that no child is too old to be read to. Talk to your children about what they like reading, what you like reading and what you could read together, then come to the library and borrow a serial for Book Week or a book for each night before bed.

The Reading Is Magic theme for 2024 brings with it an air of wonderment, highlighting fantastical stories, spellbinding narratives, and the wizardry of words that can whisk us away from our daily realities to worlds unknown.

Please drop in to the Lucy Hill Library if you would like more information or to have a chat with Mrs Roberts about the events of the week. It is sure to be a lot of fun.

Prep Wellbeing News – You Can Do It!

A message from Mrs Clinton, Dean of Students P-6

In Term 3, our Prep students will continue to benefit from the ‘You Can Do It’ program, designed to help them develop essential life skills. For our Kindy students, this term will introduce them to new ways of thinking and learning to build confidence and persistence. Meanwhile, our Year 1 and Year 2 students will engage in role-playing and circle time activities. Our students will meet the You Can Do It characters called ‘Connie Confidence’, ‘Pete Persistence’ and ‘Ricky Resilience’.

At home, you can support this growth by providing specific and positive feedback. For instance, you might say, “You tried extra hard with your reading tonight and you kept going even when it was tough. That’s a great example of persistence!” It’s important to recognise and praise these moments of effort and determination right when they happen. By doing so, you’ll help reinforce the values of confidence, persistence, organisation and resilience, aligning perfectly with what we’re fostering here at Redlands.

This term, we’re excited to continue embedding core social and emotional learning competencies across our K-2 learning programs. Our focus will be on nurturing essential skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, responsible decision-making, and enhancing relationship skills. By integrating these competencies into our daily activities, we’re helping students build a strong foundation for emotional intelligence and positive interactions. This approach not only supports their personal growth but also enhances a compassionate and supportive classroom environment. We invite you to reinforce these skills at home and celebrate the progress your child makes in these areas. Working together we can help our Prep students thrive both socially and emotionally.

National Science Week Adventures in Kindergarten, Year 1, and Year 2

This week, our young scientists in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 have been busy exploring the wonders of the world through engaging and hands-on investigations.

Kindergarten students embarked on an exciting journey into investigating movement through the world of coding with Beebots. Students followed the scientific approach in setting up their experiments.  They started by acting as “computers,” guiding classmates with carefully crafted instructions to navigate the classroom. Then, they got hands-on to test their hypothesis with Beebots, coding these little robots to complete challenges like moving objects from one place to another. Ask your child how they directed their Beebot, what they noticed or wondered about in the way Beebot moved objects  or if they had to solve any tricky problems along the way.

Year 1 students have been diving into the fascinating science of sound. Through experiments, they’ve been exploring how sound travels through different mediums like air, water and solids, and how our ears help us hear. At home, try asking them: what sound waves are or how animals use sound to communicate, or even to consider if all living things use sound in the same way. You might be surprised by their observations and questions.

Year 2 students took on the challenge of protecting an egg from a high drop! They’ve been learning about how the materials we use every day are chosen for their specific properties. This knowledge was put to the test as they designed contraptions using recycled materials to safely cushion an egg’s fall. Ask them which materials they chose and why, whether their egg survived the drop, and maybe brainstorm what they would do differently next time.

These activities have sparked curiosity and creativity in all our students, making Science Week a truly memorable learning experience.

Book Week – Week 5

Book Week is nearly here, and we are excited about the 2024 theme, Reading is Magic. The purpose of Book Week is to foster a love of reading, and to celebrate children’s literature. For that reason, we will celebrate in the Preparatory School by looking at two Australian picture books, The Concrete Garden by Bob Graham and an oldie, but goodie, The Magic Hat by Mem Fox.

On Tuesday 20 and Friday 23, your child can come to school wearing a magic hat! What can it do

The Reading Is Magic theme for 2024 brings with it an air of wonderment, highlighting fantastical stories, spellbinding narratives and the wizardry of words that can whisk us away from our daily realities to worlds unknown.

Please drop in to the Lucy Hill Library if you would like more information or to have a chat with Mrs Roberts about the events of the week. It is sure to be a lot of fun.

Senior and PreK Sports Carnival

We are excited to announce that on Wednesday 4 September, our Senior and PreK students will be participating in a small athletics carnival on the Prep School Oval from 11:30am to 12:30pm. This special event is a wonderful opportunity for our students to spend time in the Prep School environment, helping to prepare them for their transition to Kindergarten. We warmly invite parents and families to join us, watch the events, and cheer on the children as they take part in this fun and important occasion.

Please mark your calendars—we look forward to seeing you there!

Secondary Sport

As our Winter Sports teams prepare to embark on their finals series, we find ourselves on the brink of a thrilling conclusion to what has been an exceptional winter season. The hard work, perseverance and commitment demonstrated by our athletes, coaches and support staff have brought us to this point. However, as the stakes grow higher, it’s essential to remember that our success is measured not only by wins and losses but also by how well we embody the core values of our Sports Department: Strive for Excellence, Responsibility, Fun, Teamwork and Respect.

Strive for Excellence is more than just a call to victory. It’s about pushing oneself to the highest standards, both individually and as a team. As our players head into the finals, they should focus on consistent improvement, maintaining a mindset of growth and learning. Excellence isn’t just about the final score; it’s about the journey – how each practice, each game and each interaction builds towards the goal of becoming better athletes and individuals.

Responsibility is another crucial value, emphasising the importance of accountability. Every player is responsible for their preparation, effort and conduct, on and off the field or court. In the heat of the competition, maintaining composure and making decisions that reflect well on the team and the School is paramount. Coaches, too, bear responsibility, not just for the strategic decisions that will guide their teams but for fostering an environment where each player can thrive. Equally important is the role of spectators, who have a responsibility to support our teams positively and respectfully.

Fun should never be overlooked, even in the intensity of the finals. The love of the game is what drives our athletes to compete, and it’s essential that the joy of sport remains at the forefront. When players enjoy what they’re doing, they perform better, and the positive energy is contagious. Coaches can play a significant role in ensuring that the pressure of finals doesn’t overshadow the joy of playing, helping athletes to stay relaxed and focused.

Teamwork is the backbone of any successful team. Finals are won not by individuals but by groups of players working together, each contributing their unique strengths to achieve a common goal. Trust in one another, clear communication and mutual support are the elements that will carry our teams through the challenges ahead.

Finally, Respect underpins all other values. It’s vital that we treat our opponents, officials and one another with dignity and fairness. True sportsmanship shines through in moments of adversity, and how we handle both victory and defeat speaks volumes about our character.

As we head into this exciting finals series, let’s ensure that our conduct, both on and off the field/court, reflects these values. By doing so, we not only strive for victory but also uphold the spirit of our school community, making us all proud.

‘Excellence is not a singular act but a habit. You are what you do repeatedly’

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)

AFL

It was a great morning out at Macquarie on Saturday for the FInal Round of the Independent Schools AFL Competition, with the Junior team taking on Shore and the Senior Boys taking on Riverview 2 in what was the Division 2 Grand Final.

The Junior Boys have really worked well this season, despite some tough fixtures, and Saturday was a huge step in the right direction. It was an exciting match filled with some intense battles. The match started at a high tempo, with both teams displaying strong midfield pressure, Shore jumped out to an early lead but the Redlands team fought hard for possession and lifted the intensity managing to bring the game a little closer! In the end Shore were too strong taking the match 7.7 (49) to Redlands 4.6 (30).

The Senior Boys took on Riverview in the Division 2 Final, with both teams starting the game with intensity, trying to dominate the midfield, with Riverview slowly taking control and capitalising on some Redlands turnovers. Throughout the game, Riverview created some great chances through some relentless pressure and winning the clearances. The Senior Boys lifted in the 3rd quarter with some strong passages through the middle. Riverview, however, were too strong, taking the fixture 8.13 (61) to Redlands 3.2 (20).

Redlands may not have come away with the wins on Saturday, but their performances showed they have the foundations of a strong program. With focused development in key areas, we can expect to be much more competitive next season. The commitment and progress shown this year will provide a solid platform for future success.

Hockey

On the weekend we had the final round of the regular Hockey season. With SACS moving down a division, our 1sts had a bye and both 2nds and 3rds played at Bowman Field.

The 2nds faced a formidable opponent in Barker, who were at full strength. Barker dominated early on, scoring several goals and putting Redlands under constant pressure. By halftime, Redlands trailed 5-0. Despite the challenging first half, the message was clear: stick to the basics and match Barker’s intensity. The team responded with renewed energy in the second half, managing to win 1-0. Coach Jan has been highly impressed with the team’s performance and is confident they have earned their place in the semi-finals this weekend, where they will face Barker again. Special recognition goes to goalkeeper Daisy Mann and 3rds player Elsa Griffith for their outstanding contributions.

Our 3rds team faced St Andrews and demonstrated their continued improvement with a convincing 5-0 victory. The team wrapped up their season on a high note, finishing in 4th place. Coaches Lucy and Sophie are thrilled with the progress made, both individually and collectively. A big shoutout goes to those players who stepped up to assist the 2nds when needed, taking on the challenge of playing against older and more experienced teams.

This weekend we have two teams involved in Semi Finals:

  • 1st Hockey vs Oxley 11:40am
  • 2nd Hockey vs Barker 9am
  • Venue: Moorebank Liverpool District Hockey Club

Snowsports

We enjoyed a fun ski weekend filled with perfect weather and a wide range of open terrain, making it an ideal setting for everyone. The students spent their mornings mastering their skills in lessons, while the afternoons were used for some free skiing, allowing them to explore and enjoy the slopes at their own pace and with friends.

As the State Championships rapidly approach, we extend our best wishes to all the students participating. We hope your hard work pays off on the slopes!

Tennis

We had a great day of Tennis on Saturday. We welcomed Central Coast Grammar School and Oxley College at Mosman Lawn Tennis Club and had some excellent matches, played with great spirit.

It was great to host the out of area schools and the players, parents and teachers all enjoyed the venue and the tennis.

We also had some great away matches against St Augustine’s College at Wakehurst Park Tennis Centre with some really great wins by ISA 1, ISA 7 and ISA 8.

Good luck to all the ISA teams playing in the Finals this Saturday at Gosford!

Athletics Carnival

Well done to all students who participated in our carnival this week, having returned to our normal date in Term 3. Credit to all students for their enthusiasm and participation both in the stands with war cries and cheering and on the track. The wet conditions did not prevent the enthusiasm and participation and the number of students who ran in the 1500m, 800m and 400m was beyond expectation.

There was some great House Spirit being demonstrated throughout the day. The House that stood out in this area was Cowper House led by Camille and Brendan, who sung and cheered their way to some points towards the House Spirit cup. McDouall also contested the House Spirit trophy in the posters, costumes and overall spirit.

With the entrant number system student used in conjunction with the timing gates, students were able to see their times and overall rankings on the digital score board after they finished their race, providing excellent feedback for our Junior Athletes.

A big thank you the way all students looked on the day. Everyone got to wear the House race bibs this year when participating in track events. The ability to identify their peers representing their house from the grandstand really added to the carnival atmosphere.

At our Junior School assembly next Tuesday we will announce the winning House and present the shield, as well as the trophy for the House Spirit Cup. The age champions and runner up for all age groups will also be announced.

Mr Sharma will be in touch with those students who have qualified for the Redlands Athletics team who will compete at HCIES next week and we wish that team the best of luck at this selection carnival.

Drama and Theatre

Away – School Play

There are some great moments as Drama and Theatre teachers that stay with us, in what we are honoured to share within our community. The lows and highs of creating and putting on a play for an incredibly diverse community like Redlands is one such moment. From bump-in to bump-out, we should be incredibly proud of these young performers, 26 cast and 3 crew who, with the aid of the infallible Friends of Drama family, brought Michael Gow’s, Away to life in a way that the Zenith Theatre in Chatswood had certainly not experienced before. Every nuanced move, every considered action and interaction resonated with each of them as they knew in this truly ensemble show, they had created something quite magical and special for their audience.

Personally, there was some incredibly beautiful imagery created, every part valued and equal as the next, as we travelled through the summer holidays of 1967, New Year’s Eve 1968 to the start of school with our three families whose stories are as unique and diverse as Australia.

There are many shout outs and many thank yous to be made, however, I feel in this forum that it would be better to say, there are no small roles, and I value and appreciate everyone in the entire cast, crew and beyond, theatre is not made in a vacuum and together we made a moving and memorable show.

I have received some beautiful emails this week, from parents and staff, praising the student work, the high quality of the acting, movements, transitions, lighting, music and costumes – thank you – here are a couple of (anonymous) snippets from them;

To me, it highlighted one of the things I love about Redlands that sets it apart from other schools – we encourage and help our children to take risks and to support one another in striving for great goals.”

It is a wonderful opportunity for students at Redlands to develop their performing skills in front of public audiences, to gain experience of being “in character” and seeing the world through the eyes of others, and experience the power and obligation of teamwork to make something special happen through hard work and openness to feedback.”

“The performance was truly spectacular.  For the final matinee, I was sitting in the audience with XXXX dad and XXXX mum… both in floods of tears (but loving it!)”

“I am speechless. What a fantastic production, and so beautifully executed.”

“I have seen Away on multiple occasions, and the quality of this performance was extraordinary. It left me in tears at the end (not only for the ‘storyline’ but for the quality of performance for these Year 11 students).”

Here is the programme if you missed it

Theatre should make us feel something, I felt privileged to have such a hard-working cast and crew who reached for the stars and achieved well beyond. Congratulations to all involved – and let’s do it again next year!

We would certainly welcome interested parents who would like to be involved in the Friends of Drama group, please let us know, it’s a fantastic experience to be part of something bigger than ourselves.

Panto and Children’s Theatre

What a fabulous and joyous week last week was which was so Full of performances! The new unit in Year 9 this year is the Children’s Theatre and Pantomime which the students embraced with the normal Redlands vigour. Children’s theatre has a moral and works on many levels with ideas and comedy that delight the children, whilst other ideas that appeal to the adults in the audience. The Year 9s in both Mr Gidney and Mr Hawkins classes produced some hilarious scenarios with fun and clever use of props, costumes and wigs with lovely moral messages. The audiences who came across from Redlands House and the Prep School were delighted to participate, cheer, clap and engage with the style of theatre. I am absolutely resolute we should do more of this in the very near future as it was so successful. A massive thank you to the two teachers who agreed to bring the students across to be in the audience and totally embraced the experience, Chemane Huon and Georgina Knox.

Finally, following on from Mr Gidney’s article last week I would also like to thank both of the class teachers for such brilliant and positive work, that delighted the youngest members of our Redlands community!

HICES Music Festival – Years 5-8

Auditioned students from Years 5-8 performed in the HICES Music Festival at Sydney Town Hall yesterday, which was the culmination of an incredible four-day music camp at Stanwell Tops. These students were lucky enough to work under the direction of outstanding  music educators, including Australian composer and conductor Paul Jarman.

The students came away from the experience buzzing with so much energy from making so much wonderful music together and creating many new friendships.

A big thank you goes to Ms Katherine Moses, Ms Nicole Roberts and Mr Mathew Owen who managed ensembles and accompanied the wonderful music making.

We are so proud of the hard work our students put in to create an incredible night of music with many other HICES schools.

Watch out Yrs 7-11 – it’s your turn next year!

Junior Music Festival

The 2024 Junior Music Festival – Postcards from Abroad – was certainly a tour de force! Our cohorts shined, cocurricular ensembles dazzled, and our Arts Captains Edward Grinham and Sienna Benz kept us captivated throughout the evening. A particular highlight was the finale, in which all 450 students graced the stage in a triumph of logistics! It truly was a wonderful musical journey and the Music Department are incredibly proud of the achievements of all students.

A big thanks to all involved, in particular our Friends of Music team whose contributions ensured the success of the event.

A video is being produced of the event and we look forward to sharing this with families in due course. For now, please enjoy the photos of the event below!
