Year 9

Ethical Explorations Day

The Ethical Exploration Day is an opportunity for like-minded Year 9 and 10 students from schools across Sydney to get together and discuss ethical issues relevant to their world. On Wednesday this week a number of Yr 9 students, accompanied by Dr Poon and Mr Millham, participated in this forum.

Reflection by: Molly Ashcroft, Georgia Cavric and Ruby Gasmus

The Ethical Explorations Day at Rosebank College on Wednesday was a wonderful and exciting opportunity to take part in. The day started off with an enlightening guest speaker named Dr Soofi who spoke about the key concepts and implications of bioethics. We then had a member of the Terra Symposium talk to us about how to approach ethical dilemmas. After a quick break, we were split up into breakout rooms with around two members of each school to practise these new concepts we had been learning about. My group spoke about memory erasing drugs, and Molly and Georgia’s group spoke about external pregnancies and artificial wombs. After a lunch break, we had a large discussion with everyone from all schools about navigating a theoretical epidemic. This was very interesting as we were asked to evaluate how our decisions would make an impact. After managing to contain a quickly spreading epidemic, we said our thank yous and the day was over. This day was beneficial because of multiple reasons, including getting the opportunity to socialise with other Redlands students from senior years, as well as getting to hear the perspectives and points of view from students of other schools. Overall, the three of us are very grateful for the opportunity to attend this insightful event.
