Issue 19 2024 Term 2 Week 8 - 20 Jun 2024

From the Principal

At Redlands one of our strategic priorities is to continue to attract, retain and develop quality staff. As a school we have a commitment to ensuring the professional growth and development of our staff which then leads to the provision of the best educational opportunities for our students.

One of the ways we achieve this is through our Innovative Teaching Fellowship. This annual fellowship is an opportunity for teaching staff to undertake high quality professional development and study within Australia or overseas.

On Monday afternoon, this year’s fellowship recipients, Director of Redlands House, Chemane Huon, and Redlands House teacher, Deb Thomas, shared a presentation to all teaching staff on their learnings from their recent study program in Italy and England.

In Italy, Chemane and Deb spent a week on a Reggio Emilia study tour which included the Reggio Emilia Conference and visits to Reggio Emilia Schools. Reggio Emilia is the core philosophy underpinning our approach to early education at Redlands House where children are encouraged to explore, question and interpret the world around them during these early years, which creates a solid foundation of experiences to help each child reach their full potential later in their schooling.

In addition, with our recent acceptance into the Round Square global network of schools, Chemane and Deb were able to visit Round Square schools in England to learn from some of their approaches to early education.

On Monday it was wonderful to not only have all staff learn more about our approaches to early education from Chemane and Deb, but to also see how our Redlands Learning Platform provides a continuum of educational approaches from our Reggio Emilia approach in our earliest years all the way through to our approach to HSC and IB studies in the final years of schooling.

Congratulations to Year 12 student and Wellbeing Captain, Anneka Steele, who this week was announced as one of five national winner of the 2024 Australian Economics Olympiad. As a national winner, Anneka will now compete in the Australasian Economics Competition (AAEO) facing competitors from the Asia Pacific region including New Zealand, Singapore, China, Taiwan and Malaysia. This is the second year in a row that Redlands has had a national winner of this prestigious competition with Taylor Riddell (Class of 2023) winning the award last year.

In speaking to Anneka earlier this week about this award she reflected that she attributed her achievement to the “just give it a go” mindset that she has learned at Redlands which allowed her to put herself forward for the competition in the first place. She reflected that during the actual competition, “taking a leap of faith and attempting to answer a challenging question turned out to be the most rewarding experience of the entire competition. It reminded me that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take and that success for women in male-dominated fields sometimes just requires the courage to answer one question.”

Inspiring words.

Community Update

With the end of Term 2 in sight, it has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the first semester of school.  The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) remain actively engaged in bringing our various groups together both socially and operationally right up to the mid-year break. Information on the remaining community events this term can be viewed here.

It’s a joy to celebrate the achievements and success of our Redlanders, and this week we feature Tate Boswarva (RL 2022) who has been named a Finalist in the 2024 in the Northern Beaches Environmental Art and Design Prize for their three piece wearable artwork “Occyan Morphosis”. Our alumni can be found locally and globally and we continue to ensure the connections with this important part of our community are nurtured and developed through Redlands alumni engagement program.  To read more about Tate’s incredible ensemble, please visit the Foundation section.

My thanks to those who donated uniforms, and to the ever active and passionate RPFA for their collective effort in running the Second Hand Uniform Sale this week. This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund. Our Uniform Shop remains fully stocked for those looking to make the transition to new trans-seasonal uniform from Term 3.

A reminder that tickets are now available for our much loved Gala Arts event.  This annual showcase of Redlands best performing artists features 24 finalists competing in categories that include Visual Arts, Vocal, Instrumental, Dance and Theatre. This is a must see community event hosted at The Concourse in Chatswood, with tickets available through the link below.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Heart and Soul of our Redlands Outdoor Education

Established more than 30 years ago through the generous support of our Redlands families, the High Country Campus is home to our Winter School, the newly established Year 9 Moonbah Program and is the heart of our Outdoor Education program.

To continue these unique and special Redlands experiences for our students, your ongoing support and investment is needed to upgrade our High Country Campus facilities.

“I’m a huge fan of the High Country Campus. My children have benefited greatly from the independence and social development that the term long Winter School program offers. I’m delighted the School is leveraging these amazing attributes through the Moonbah Program for future students. It has the potential to be one of the highlights of their school education.”

Grahame Petersen, Chair, Redlands Foundation Advisory Committee, Current Parent

The Redlands inaugural Giving Day will play a vital role in achieving this year’s philanthropic target of $1M supporting the expansion of the High Country Campus and the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship .

Congratulations Tate Boswarva, Redlander 2022

Tate Boswarva, Redlander 2022, has been named a Finalist in the 2024 in the Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize

Tate’s three piece wearable artwork “Occyan Morphosis” is a profound reflection on the impact of plastic waste on marine life. The wearable artwork envisions a future where sea creatures, entangled in pollution, undergo a metamorphosis to survive.

Crafted from 17 upcycled denim jeans, the ensemble includes a bolero, bralette, and trousers, each meticulously stitched to symbolise the 4,000 litres of water typically required to produce a single pair of jeans. The design is further enriched with 21 meters of discarded fast fashion plastic packaging and sequins repurposed from everyday waste items like chewing gum containers, coffee cup lids, water bottles, and takeaway containers, collected over the past five years.

The exhibition will be open to the public from August 2–25 with the Wearable Art category featuring Tate’s work showcased at the Curl Curl Creative Space. You can help Tate win the People’s Choice Category by visiting the exhibition and voting for her work. Well done, Tate!

Behind the Scenes with the RPFA: Meet your Class Parents

A wonderful group of volunteers, Class Parents are in place from Redlands House all the way up to Yr 12. Their efforts in welcoming new parents, organising teacher celebrations and facilitating class social events go a long way in maintaining the connected and engaged school community we enjoy here at Redlands.

Check back here each week to meet 2024 Class Parents and discover how you can get involved!

Name: Daniella Aburto Valle
Role: CP for 1Y and RHJ-Y
Kids: Leo Anderson in Year 1 and Maya Anderson in Redlands House Juniors Yellow

If you could choose a Class Parent theme song what would be the title name?

“Waka Waka (Esto es Africa)” by Shakira. I’ve played it for the kids on International Day, and they really get into the groove. I love that it’s so international and universal.

Why did you decide to become a Class Parent, and what do you love most about it?

As an international family, we truly value the incredible community at Redlands. I appreciated the efforts of other class parents in building our community and wanted to contribute as well. I enjoy sharing more about my kids’ school life and getting to know the teachers and families better. I’ve also loved sharing my passions, like organizing “Cooking for Good” sessions and sessions on AI and critical thinking.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the school?

Step in and do it! We have a wonderful community because of the diverse parents who care and actively contribute. You won’t be alone; there’s a community of parents ready to help and have fun along the way.

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

I love the ingenuity and curiosity of our kids. I’d love to join their inquiry sessions and can’t wait for my kids to experience the innovation and entrepreneurship curriculum that Redlands is so progressively promoting!

The Week in Pictures

Bubbles and pastries at the Year 11 coffee morning at Jacqui’s house!

A fabulous Book Club meeting last week where they discussed Hello Beautiful by Anna Napolitano and enjoyed beautiful food, great conversations about the book.

Redlands Community Concert at Bupa Aged Care Mosman 16 June

17 Redlands students from Years 2 to Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed performing at Bupa Aged Care, Mosman on Sunday 16 June. They brought enjoyment to the residents with singing, ballet, guitar, violin, viola, cello and piano. Despite technical glitches with the venue’s audio system, Redlands students demonstrated high quality performance and excellent stage etiquette. The gorgeous Junior Ballet danced to near silent music with great musicality and adaptability, so did the Choir which sang amazingly well with little music accompaniment.

Special thanks to Claire Wallis, Administrator of the Redlands Dance Academy who gave up weekend time to help out, and to Anne Marie, Redlands former strings teacher who came to provide piano accompaniment and helped tuning instruments.

A lovely afternoon with our students truly representing Redlands’ sense of sharing, giving, and community.

Do you have event pics you want to share? Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Year 12: Our Gift, Our Legacy

It has been an exciting journey with the Year 12 Legacy Gift team working through ideas, concepts and fundraising initiatives. This year’s student led initiative is focusing on the importance of ‘Giving Back’ to the School. It is wonderful to see students working collaboratively and with a passion to continue this tradition which was started by the Class of 2016.

This year, funds raised will be contributed to the sixth Redlands Means Tested Scholarship named after Coralie Amos OAM, Redlander Class of 1964. For all her efforts and commitment to Service, Coralie was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia for Community Service in 2021.

Please Join Year 12 in their Efforts

Year 12 are inviting the entire Redlands community to support them in their fundraising efforts. They appreciate your support as they come to the end of their Redlands journey by purchasing one, or more, of our special commemorative 2024 drink bottles, Redlands Rhino key chains and greeting cards, or contribute directly to the Scholarship Fund.

If you make a purchase, products will be available next Term (July/August) either delivered to your child’s class/tutor or by post for an extra charge.

Final Week of Term 2

As we approach the final week of the term, we want to encourage everyone to stay focused and finish strong. Here are a few important reminders to help us all maintain our high standards and ensure a smooth end to the term.

Uniform Reminder: Stay Smart and Warm!

With the weather getting colder, it’s important to make sure our uniform standards don’t slip. Students should wear their blazers and navy school woollen jumpers to stay warm. Please remember that fleeces are only part of the Sport uniform and are not to be worn with the School uniform. Looking smart helps us feel smart and ready to tackle the last days of the term with pride.

All students are required to wear their Blazer to the End of Term Assembly of the final day of term, Friday 28 June.

Respecting Our Community: After-School Guidelines

We love seeing our students socialising and enjoying time together after school. However, due to end-of-term fatigue and a natural drop in self-management, we ask that social activities take place in the comfort and safety of someone’s home under parental supervision. This helps everyone stay safe and respectful of our community. Please note that students are strongly encouraged to go directly home after school each evening and refrain from visiting the local shops after school during the final week of the term.

Thank You, Parents!

A big thank you to our wonderful parents for your continued support. To help students stay energised for their after-school activities, please ensure they have ample snacks packed in their bags for afternoon tea. Your efforts in keeping them fuelled and focused are greatly appreciated.

Let’s work together to finish the term on a high note! Keep up the great work, stay warm, and enjoy the final week of the term.

Senior Music Festival

We are all very excited about tomorrow night’s Senior Music Festival and the kaleidoscope of talent that will be showcased. A huge thank you to all of the staff and parents who have worked tirelessly to bring this wonderful annual event together.

The students have been practising their hearts out and we  are really looking forward to seeing the students shine on the evening.

Year 12 Stepping Beyond

This year, several students have been recognised for Stepping Beyond and School Captains, Jasmine Black and Isaac Brooks, are highlighting these individuals and celebrating their efforts through the Step Beyond Awards given out during stage assemblies.

The purpose of the Step Beyond award is to celebrate and recognise those who have stepped outside their comfort zones. These individuals may have incredible personal achievements or consistent small acts of effort noticed by teachers or peers. These students stepped outside their comfort zone, achieved their goals, and bettered themselves in the process. Recognising these individuals at the student-led stage assemblies also allows for peers to see what others are doing, to feel inspired by others, get new ideas, and to celebrate their friends.

Yr 12 HSC Drama Individual Project Showcase

Last Friday, Yr 12 HSC Drama students presented their monologues and costume design – chosen to suit their interests, strengths and to challenge their abilities. Each monologue and costume design was uniquely tailored and crafted by students from a full length production. Students have been working on these pieces since the start of the HSC course. The audience was blown away by the depth of each piece, the use of the stage, the connection with character, the use of props and the depth of content. Each project captured your attention immediately from the beginning and left the audience thinking well beyond the performances, covering important and meaningful topics, such as mental health, abuse, love, confidence, doubt and loss. Well done to all students and staff involved in this incredible evening.

Australian Economics Olympiad 2024

Year 12 student Anneka Steele has been announced as the national winner of the Australian Economics Olympiad 2024! The level of competition this year was incredibly high, with economics students from all around Australia competing in the event, making this accomplishment even more remarkable.

As a national winner, Anneka will now compete in the Australasian Economics Competition (AAEO) in the coming weeks. Alongside four other national winners, she will face competitors from the Asia Pacific region including New Zealand, Singapore, China, Taiwan, and Malaysia. This exciting event will bring together exceptional talents from across the region for a variety of activities, including a visit to the Reserve Bank of Australia. This unique opportunity will allow Anneka to showcase her skills on an international stage while fostering cross-cultural exchange and collaboration.

Congratulations to Krishan Price for advancing to the top 40 students and making it to the second round. We commend everyone who participated and challenged themselves in this exciting opportunity.

Student-Led Conferences

While students are encouraged to remain in control of their daily choices, actions and studies, it is always encouraged for parents to continue connecting with their children around their academic progress. During the Student-Led Conferences this week, students were provided time in school to reflect on their growth in each of their courses and consider the prompts below.

To continue conversations at home, consider starting a conversation with your child utilising a few of these prompts that might not have been discussed during the conferences.

Ethical Explorations Day – Wednesday 1

Yesterday, the following Yr 11 students attended an interschool Ethical Explorations Day at Rosebank College, learning from a guest speaker from the University of Sydney on bioethics and explore bioethical dilemmas in relation to epidemic management and control.

  • Remie Gibbs
  • Krishna Gupta
  • Hiro Phillips
  • Sarah Zeppel

Reflection from Hiro Phillips and Krishna Gupta:

This week, a group of Year 11s, along with some Year 9s and 10s, had the privilege of attending Ethical Explorations Day at Rosebank College. We engaged in a series of meaningful discussions with schools around all of Sydney, focusing on a variety of bioethical dilemmas. As members of the Research and Development Subcommittee, we explored the moral ambiguity of emerging technological advancements, such as CRISPR, a method of genetic modification/enhancement, and the principles by which private corporations should base their decision-making. We were then prompted to engage in an imagined scenario with the entirety of the group, in which a deadly virus has broken out within Australia, creating a range of ethical dilemmas for government bodies. We took on the role of these organisations, making decisions to maximise the safety of the Australian and global population. We thoroughly enjoyed connecting with like-minded students during the day, creating thought-provoking discussion and broadening our ethical perspectives.

Mini Mos Funrun Results

Over the weekend, we had several Redlands students compete in the Mini Mos Fun Run.

Some outstanding results from Year 11 include:

  • Alex Symons: 31st overall in the 5k (31:40)
  • Sofia Vincent: 32nd overall in the 5k (31:40)
  • Angelica Doukas-White: 49th overall in the 5k (34:24)

Congratulations to all involved across the Secondary School.

Career Planning Modules

This term Yr 11 have been completing weekly tutor time activities to explore what careers suit their personality, what is important to them and to research potential post-school courses.

Alumni and University Sessions

Throughout Terms 1 and 2, Yr 11 have been lucky to have alumni visit from a range of industries including music, the ADF, medicine and more. In Week 5 all of Year 11 had the opportunity to learn about the University of British Columbia. Whilst studying in Canada will not be for everyone, this presentation was an excellent introduction to decision factors Yr 11 should be researching and considering. Following the presentation, students should now be asking themselves the following questions:
  • What kind of university campus appeals to me?
  • What opportunities would I want my university to offer? Eg internships, sports, societies?
  • What is the cost of international tuition versus tuition in Australia? Will I be using HECS? Who will be paying for accommodation if I move out of home?
  • What grades do I need for entry to my preferred courses at different universities?
  • Do I want to go to university straight away or do I want to take a gap year or start working?

Open Days

Sophie Yu (Yr 11), who was a finalist in the Australian Parliament’s My First Speech competition last year, is set for another remarkable milestone. She has been shortlisted for the NSW Youth Advisory Council (YAC) 2025, providing her with an opportunity to represent youth voices on vital social issues. Sophie will soon attend a face to face interview at NSW Parliament House next Friday as part of an extensive selection process. If selected, she will join 11 other members in providing direct communication between young people and the NSW Government. The YAC regularly advises the Minister for Youth and the Advocate for Children and Young People on policies and laws affecting NSW’s youth. The selection process is rigorous, with candidates assessed by the Advocate and broader ACYP team. We wish you the best of luck, Sophie!

Webinar: New Information About Teen Screen Use and Mental Health

Redlands is participating in the Black Dog Institute’s Future Proofing Study, the largest and most comprehensive investigation of adolescent mental health in Australia. When our current Yr 12 students were in Yr 8, families and students could choose to opt into the study or not.

Researchers from the Black Dog Institute now visit our school every year to facilitate these enrolled students completing an anonymous online survey about all aspects of their mental health and wellbeing. This information is then analysed with the data from the other thousands of participants, and the analysis is provided to key decision makers to shape policy and service provision.

In 2023, the researchers asked participants about their screen use and linked this input with participants’ mental health input. The research team then prepared a webinar for parents documenting their findings about teens, screens and mental health. This webinar also includes options for how parents can support their children navigate the digital world positively and safely.

Topics included in the webinar:

(1)    Background to the Future Proofing Study (at 3:13 mins)

(2)    How teens are using screens (at 4:10 mins)

(3)    The association between teen screen use and mental health (at 6:28 mins)

(4)    What families can do to support children to navigate the digital world (at 18:00 mins)

Yr 10 Japanese Excursion: Reflection by Liv Dijkstra

On Monday, our Year 10 Japanese class embarked on an exciting excursion to a Japanese supermarket in Neutral Bay. In class, we have been studying a unit on shopping, and this excursion provided a valuable opportunity to apply our learning in an authentic environment. Using the language outside the classroom was both thrilling and a bit nerve-racking.

For many of us, it was our first time exploring a variety of Japanese snacks, which allowed us to broaden our culinary experiences. After returning to school, we sampled the snacks we had purchased and shared them with each other, discussing our favourites.

This excursion was incredibly informative, as it enabled us to practise speaking Japanese in a real-world setting, enhancing our confidence and proficiency beyond the confines of the classroom.

Ethical Explorations Day – Reflection by Zara Anderson

The following Yr 10 students attended an interschool Ethical Explorations Day at Rosebank College on Wednesday. They heard from a guest speaker from the University of Sydney on bioethics and explore bioethical dilemmas in relation to epidemic management and control.

  • Zara Anderson
  • Leela Gohil
  • Frankie Richardson

We had the opportunity to participate in the Ethical Explorations Day at Rosebank College. This jam-packed experience was incredibly eye-opening, allowing us to analyse the varying ethical undertones in current world circumstances. We were fortunate to hear from bioethical educators, philosophers and enthusiasts, who helped us develop an understanding of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice. After being divided into groups, we discussed concerns ranging from topics in hospitals to governments to industries and composed a checklist of what is truly right by humans. While challenging at times, these discussions sparked many debates among schools, students and volunteers, encouraging diverse viewpoints. We particularly loved the large group discussions, which involved all students from Years 9-11 partaking in one holistic matter. Together, we investigated various factors to reach a conclusion on how to approach the issue. Overall, this experience allowed us to consider different perspectives and develop a concept of bioethics in this ever-changing world.

Ethical Explorations Day

The Ethical Exploration Day is an opportunity for like-minded Year 9 and 10 students from schools across Sydney to get together and discuss ethical issues relevant to their world. On Wednesday this week a number of Yr 9 students, accompanied by Dr Poon and Mr Millham, participated in this forum.

Reflection by: Molly Ashcroft, Georgia Cavric and Ruby Gasmus

The Ethical Explorations Day at Rosebank College on Wednesday was a wonderful and exciting opportunity to take part in. The day started off with an enlightening guest speaker named Dr Soofi who spoke about the key concepts and implications of bioethics. We then had a member of the Terra Symposium talk to us about how to approach ethical dilemmas. After a quick break, we were split up into breakout rooms with around two members of each school to practise these new concepts we had been learning about. My group spoke about memory erasing drugs, and Molly and Georgia’s group spoke about external pregnancies and artificial wombs. After a lunch break, we had a large discussion with everyone from all schools about navigating a theoretical epidemic. This was very interesting as we were asked to evaluate how our decisions would make an impact. After managing to contain a quickly spreading epidemic, we said our thank yous and the day was over. This day was beneficial because of multiple reasons, including getting the opportunity to socialise with other Redlands students from senior years, as well as getting to hear the perspectives and points of view from students of other schools. Overall, the three of us are very grateful for the opportunity to attend this insightful event.

Waste Not (Want Not)

Last week, the Yr 8 cohort journeyed across Sydney to learn about the circular economy and the creative methods organisations are employing to reduce our environmental footprint in the disposal of waste.

Students visited Textiles Recyclers Australia to learn about how old Redlands uniforms are recycled; an aquaponics restaurant called Field and Fin to sample tasty food created through a more environmentally friendly method of growing; Upcycled Glassware to discover innovative ways to recycle glass materials by turning them into beautiful art installations; and Kimbriki, the waste disposal space north of us in Terry Hills. It was a deeply educative experience for all.

I was fortunate enough to accompany the group who ventured to Kimbriki where we learnt about the challenges of managing landfill, the difficulty of waste disposal, given the huge amount of waste produced every day, and were informed about the important processes involved in recycling plastic, metals and even concrete materials. The scale of Kimbriki is mind-boggling and gave students a confronting vision of the damaging impact we can have on our environment if we are not more careful and creative in how we go about disposing of our waste.

Drama ‘& Juliet’

Yesterday, Yr 8 Drama students were also given a great treat in being taken to visit a matinee session of the exciting new musical  & Juliet – a coming-of-age jukebox musical featuring the songs of Swedish pop songwriter Max Martin, currently playing at the Lyric Theatre. Students enjoyed the fast paced show, flashy sets and catchy tunes in this creative reimagining of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

Step Beyond and the Yr 8 Pastoral Care Committee

On Tuesday, our student leaders acknowledged Aimee Kang’s recent efforts in supporting our cohort by presenting her with a Step Beyond award. Aimee has been part of a small committee of student advisors who have been helping to make our Pastoral Care program more relevant to student experience by offering their thoughts on what would most benefit students in their Tutor lessons. Aimee recently helped to construct some engaging resources to encourage students to consider what their personal brand entails and how they can reflect that in their interactions with others.

Our Assistant Year Advisor, Ms Wang, is now looking for more students to volunteer to be part of our Pastoral Care Program Committee for Term 3. By joining this committee, students will have the chance to represent their peers and actively contribute to our pastoral program, particularly in our weekly social and emotional learning sessions. Students will be able to propose new ideas, evaluate activities and provide valuable feedback. If you are interested, please email Ms Wang (vwang@redlands.nsw.edu.au) this week, with a short paragraph explaining why you would like to join the committee and what you hope to contribute.

Co-Curricular Spotlight – eSports

As we near the end of Term 2, it is a good time to consider if there are more places where students might find joy and build their friendship connections at Redlands. The school has an amazing collection of co-curricular clubs on offer – the details of which can all be found through Pulse.

One such club is the eSports club where, with the assistance of IT staff, students are provided with a safe, welcoming and structured environment to participate in competitive computer game play, supported by important promotion of concepts such as digital wellbeing, inclusion and critical thinking. eSports is a great way for students to develop social skills and form new friendships. While gaming can often be seen as a solitary activity, eSports requires players to work together as a team. This can lead to the development of strong bonds between players, as well as the formation of new friendships.

Head of Junior School

This week I had the pleasure of working with our Year 6 students to understand some of the leadership lessons we can learn from the life of Nelson Mandela. As we discussed Mandela’s pursuit of justice, even in the face of tremendous adversity, I was struck by the Year 6 cohort’s grasp of both the importance of opposing unfair behaviour and the importance of working towards a fairer society. One of Mandela’s most compelling and inspiring qualities was his ability to forgive those who wronged him, a lesson that we would all do well to remember. Mandela’s legacy encourages us to build a community where equality, justice, and forgiveness are at the heart of our actions and interactions.

Redlands Community Concert at Bupa Aged Care Mosman 16 June

17 Redlands students from Year 2 to Year 6 thoroughly enjoyed performing at Bupa Aged Care, Mosman on Sunday 16 June.

Calling all Artists and Creative Minds!

The Prep School will be supporting the Festival of Redlands on 19 October by producing spectacular artworks that will be auctioned off on the day. To assist us do this we are putting the call out to any parents or friends who may be able to help us with our class creations. At this early stage of planning, we are hoping to create the class artworks at the start of the term on a Prep ‘art afternoon’.

If you or someone you know might be able to help us with ideas, resources or the actual creation of these pieces, please let me know via email. Thanking everyone in advance.

School Start Time

Parents are reminded that school begins at 8.20am with attendance taken by 8.30am. We have been reviewing the late arrival numbers and unfortunately the numbers have grown quite substantially of late. Of course, there are times when lateness is unavoidable and this is understandable, but there continues to be students who consistently walking through the doors after 8.30am telling us that they have slept in or that they just couldn’t get ready in time.

Can I please encourage families who may be struggling to get to school by 8.20am to please have a conversation with me or one of the counsellors perhaps for some tips or tricks to getting to school on time!

Sadly, children who are consistently late, miss out on key learning time and can feel embarrassed when entering the classroom late. Thank you for your assistance.

How We Celebrate Birthdays P-6

HubHello – Electronic Sign-in

Next week, Redlands House will move to an electronic system for signing in and out of the Preschool daily. HubHello has been used for many years by our Extended Care team, we will soon utilise this system for all attendances at Redlands House.  Each authorised person can use their mobile phone and associated number, so please remember your phone. When using the App for the first time, you will be required to select a PIN number,  that you will need to remember.

Please bear with us next week while we iron out any issues, we hope to have the system solely used by the beginning of Term 3.

It is with great excitement that we are able to share with you the launch of our Year 9 Experiential Learning Program commencing in 2025. This program will be called our Year 9 Moonbah Program as Moonbah is the location of our High Country Campus outside of Jindabyne.

The Moonbah Program which will commence for Year 9 in 2025, promises to be a transformative immersive educational experience for our students who will benefit academically, pastorally and socially from their involvement.

Significant research has gone into the preparation of our program, including comprehensive reviews of similar programs at other independent schools with residential programs with site visits to many of these schools in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia by key staff. In addition, the School has drawn on academic research on residential experiential learning, immersive and outdoor education programs which have found positive impacts on students’ wellbeing, relationships, self-confidence, resilience, engagement with learning and achievement.

Secondary Sport

I was sent a great article by a parent  this week titled Growth mindset driving the Boston Celtics, which goes into detail about the now Championships run of the Boston Celtics, how and why their coach Brad Stevens has instilled the growth mindset amongst the young playing group that achieved great success early in their careers but have also been deleted with some tough lessons throughout their careers. This drives home some key learnings for our Sport programs as students move through their high school journey, not every season is easy, not every game, set or match is hard but working to improve is important. Having that growth mindset is crucial for teenagers because it influences their approach to challenges, learning and development across various aspects of their lives, from their sporting commitments, to their academics and also their co-curricular choices.

How can we help?

  • view setbacks and failures as opportunities to improve rather than be obstacles (embrace the challenges).
  • persist with trainings and practice, understand that skills improve with effort and dedication (stay persistent)
  • be open to feedback and collaboration, this leads to better communication, enhance team dynamics and effective leadership
  • be willing to adapt to more complex and diverse situations
  • abilities and brilliance can developed through hard work and effort
  • try new activities, broaden experiences and skill sets

A key message that the students hear is to establish a growth mindset early. This allows them to build a strong foundation of resilience, curiosity and a passion for learning. This creates such a positive attitude towards all activities that the school has to offer, setting the stage for continued growth. As the pressures increase, we work to allow students to handle stress, stay motivated and achieve their goals. This provides an opportunity for well-rounded education, which will contribute both personally and professionally in the future.

‘In a growth mindset, you are focused every day by your growth, not deterred by challenges and not overwhelmed by accomplishments – you’re just moving on to the next day’

Brad Stevens

Football

Rain didn’t stop us from playing, the grounds were open and looked superb ready for Football action.

The day started with wins for 15A Boys and 16A Boys against St Andrews Cathedral.

The boys kept getting good results during the morning, the Second XI Boys led by Brazilian coach Ruddy Franco had a great 8-1 win.

Our young teams also had very tough games and 13A boys won.  The rest of the young teams played good football but didn’t get the wins.

The First XI Boys competed to the end and while they didn’t come up with the points, they are working hard and creating chances.

Congratulations also to the Junior A Girls who had a great win 1-0 against Barker, the First XI girls winning 2-1 against Oakhill. Junior C Girls played very well and won 3-2 against Blue Mountains, and the Second XI girls also achieved a great result drawing 1-1. Congratulations to Mr Crawford, Mr Da Costa , Mr Marlow and our young female coaches Maddi, Livia and Zoe for the performances of the girls teams.

Round 7 will be the last round for Term 2 but it will be full of action. The Boys will be at home against St Patrick College and we are looking to improve our performances and results on Saturday.

The Girls program will be travelling to Oxley for a tough round of games, which we all are looking forward to.

During the upcoming school holidays, we are planning Football clinics for the players. There will be more information on Pulse next week.

Thank you all for supporting us on Saturday morning. It is very much appreciated and I am sure the players love having you support them at their matches.

Hockey

For Round 6, Redlands Hockey made their trip down to the Southern Highlands to play against Oxley College. The teams were very happy to hear the games this year weren’t being played on grass and rather at Frensham School’s synthetic grounds.

After an early start heading down to Frensham, the 1st Girls began the game slowly, going into halftime at 2-2. Coach Peterson delivered an enthralling team talk and the girls came out in the second half, putting 4 goals past Oxley and winning 6-2. Goal scorers: Jess x 3, Carolina, Heidi and Eleanor all 1 each.

The 2nds had a good performance overall, dominating the goal however just struggling with the final passage of play getting past the Oxley keeper. The players combined well on numerous occasions with plenty of circle entries. MVP: Daisy Mann who kept a clean sheet.

The 3rds were up next and, after a cold morning, the layers were starting to come off and the girls were ready for tough game against a young and energetic Oxley. The team fought hard and unfortunately went down 0-4. Next up in Round 7 is Barker and Blue Mountains Grammar School respectively.

Whilst the holidays are fast approaching, we want to ensure we come back firing in Term 3. With that in mind there will be two holiday training sessions for all teams:

  • Tuesday 16 July and Thursday 18 July
  • 7:30 – 9am at Redlands Junior School

Netball

A huge day of travel last Saturday and some excellent netball played.  Some very close games which is always exciting and makes me very happy – intensity and focus makes great netballers.

Please find our Players of the Week for Round 6.

  • For the First VII, it was Charlotte Horton. Coming off the back of her third place win at the Senior NSW State Titles, her shooting accuracy was on point and she was on fire – a very tightly contested game for the entire hour and a big score of 56-58!
  • Our Senior 2 team was Clara Wall with some tight defence work and great rebounds, a close game indeed.
  • Senior 3 player of the match was Caitlin Mitchell, reading the play well, taking a strong front position to take many intercepts.
  • Our other players of the week were Annalise Beatty and Issy Saltz for Junior B who had a great attacking and shooting connection.
  • Junior A was Aggie Storch. Aggie asked for feedback in defence and put this into play and had an successful second half with rebounds and intercepts.
  • Another close game for the Inter A team this week with Millie Coddrington, who took some flying intercepts and tips.
  • The Inter B’s saw Aurora Crennan perform very well under pressure, with some intense defensive moves.
  • For the Junior E team, Miranda Tahuil-Gonzalez took on some early feedback in the game, listened and had a blinder after that.
  • Inter D was the only team at Barker and had an energetic game. Anna Moate was the player of the match with long, strong shoulder passes and good eyes looking for space down the court.
  • Junior C was Alba Martin-Gomez. Alba was always working hard, making good drives and change of direction around the court for reoffers.
  • Junior G and Junior H team had their fixture during the week with the First VII girls coaching and umpiring. A treat for the girls to have their hero players watching them play. The G team won but it was well fought by the Junior H team.

Round 7 sees many teams travel to the Central Coast Grammar School. Once again please check the Clipboard schedule on Pulse for bus departure and arrival times. Ensure players are warm and have water with them. Healthy snacks are allowed for the long mornings but nothing is allowed to be eaten on the bus.

These holidays to keep up players fitness and skills, we will be running the below holiday sessions with our dedicated coaches. Sessions are divided into attacking skill work and game time and defensive skill work and game time.

Juniors (Yr 7/8):  9 & 11 July, 8.30am-10.00am in the Lang Gym

Intermediates (Yr/10): 16 & 18 July,  8.30am- 10.00am in the Lang Gym

There will be sign up information for the sessions published next week. We hope to see many players take these opportunities to keep up skills and keep engaged over the break. Please note there are still three more fixtures in Term 3 plus semis and finals for some.  Go Redlands!

Rugby

Round 1 ISA Wrap up:  A few students have provided summaries of Week 1 ISA fixtures

14s: My teammates and I were thrilled to have the opportunity of travelling to Bathurst to play rugby and really enjoyed the experience. In our first game against St Stanislaus’s B team, we all played incredibly hard with some amazing personal performances from Tristan, Luca and Matteo. Redlands won 33-22 in a great game of rugby from both sides.  In the second game however was a challenge as we were all exhausted. But still, we went into the game determined to do our best, but St Stanislaus’s A team was on another level. We ended up losing 53-0. – Felix Eade

16s: We lost 43-41. Even though we lost, I feel like this was one of the best games we’ve played as a team this year, as we were resilient throughout the whole game, and never put our heads down between tries. We knew that we were trailing by a fair margin at halftime, but in the second half we came back strong and almost produced a win over St Stanislaus.  – Leo Migliucci

Trainer of the Week: This season we will name players/trainers of the week throughout the term on Note Day each week. These players demonstrate commitment to the team in training and strong performance in games.

  • 13s: Kyler Simpson
  • 14s: Ashton Bannister
  • 15s: Kai Feldman
  • 16s: Leo Migilucci
  • Opens : Charlie Gordon

Round 2 Preview

This weekend we are back at home against St Augustine’s. St Aug’s are the current powerhouse in ISA Rugby, this will allow for a great challenge for the Barbarians Rugby program. We look forward to building into our season with the support from friends and family at home.

Game day reminders:

  • All players are required to be at the field 30 minutes prior to kick off time. This allows for coaches to gather the team, and warm them up effectively.
  • All spectators (if not helping run touch judge) are to be behind the fence/ bunting around the field.

Pathways outside of school

We encourage our Rugby enthusiasts to look into club pathways with upcoming opportunities to trial for Junior State Champs teams (15s has just been payer) and 7s formats. This for both boys and girls. If you are interested please reach out so that we can help point you in the right direction!

The School has close ties with Norths Junior Rugby, we are happy to connect interested students.

It was great to see the students showing support for each other and really playing as a team.

We had some great matches and some very good results:

ISA 6 won 5-3, ISA 8 won 6-2 and ISA 10 won 7-1 and ISA 11 won 8-0 against St Andrew’s Cathedral School.

Let’s focus on training this week and get ready for some great tennis on Saturday to finish the term with a win!

Rep Winter Sport

Unfortunately the rain and wild weather played havoc with our Saturday Rep Sport last weekend. Hockey and the Boys Year 4 Football were the only teams to get their games in. Year 4 travelled to the Southern Highlands to play Tudor House Moss Vale and had two from two wins in some very cold conditions. Our Girls Hockey teams played Loreto and Roseville College and also had two wins. This Saturday will see the final round of Winter Sport for our Netball and Hockey girls in their season and we wish them the best of luck. The Football and Rugby teams will play their last game of the term before recommencing in Term 3 for their final three weeks of their regular season, noting that Mixed Sport plays over two terms while Girls Sport plays over one term in our IPSHA pathway.

Rep Sport Photos

A great effort by all our students in  our Term 1 and Term 2 Summer/Winter Rep Sport Photos yesterday. These photos will be available for families to view and or purchase at a later stage.

8/9 CIS Boys 2nd Place Team

In an exciting opportunity for the boys, we were fortunate to have School Captain and Cross Country Captain, Isaac Brooks come over to the Junior School to meet our youngest Cross Country athletes who competed at the CIS Cross Country Championships. Over recess on the oval the boys got to ask Isaac lots of questions relating to his training, what he does, what events are his favourite and in return Isaac was able to share advice on how to train, tips on recovery and suggested park runs being the place to keep the km’s in the boys legs as they prepare for our Athletics Carnival next term. Thanks Isaac and good luck in the 800m event at your Senior Athletics Carnival next week.

Students from both codes have been divided into 8 countries and will play each other each Wednesday in a variety of Athletic events. Representative Sports – Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday Sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it. Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video

Our intranet, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.

Redlands Pulse -The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Drama and Theatre

This week continues to see the Drama and Theatre department busy and offering a myriad of different activities and opportunities for our Student body.

On the evening of Friday 14 June, the Year 12 HSC Drama class presented their Individual Performance and Projects Trial, to a house so packed that many had to stand for the duration – it was well worth it.  The seven performances ranged from humorous to tragic, modern to classic, with beautiful nuanced moments, cohesion and blocking, whilst the Costume Design for The Visit, was well executed and evocative. The  marks received will be the students’ internal marks for their Individual Performances. Students will continue to work on these using the feedback given and present again in August for their actual HSC. Congratulations to all the students involved. Together you delivered a wonderful night of theatre. I would like to thank and acknowledge the work of everyone involved, especially their dedicated and hard working HSC Drama teacher Ms Marita Jansons.

Year 11 IB Students  have been doing a series of workshops for their study of a World Theatre Traditions. On Tuesday they were treated to an absolutely terrific workshop with the wonderful Redlander, Tiffany Wong, currently assistant director on Bell Shakespeare’s King Lear, and learner in the art of Jing Ju, Peking Opera. Our two hour workshop, of course, was only a taster of what conventions students could look at through the lens of some of the more traditional stock characters and traditional performance material. We explored the old man character, Xuezi, applying the traits to original source material – an excerpt from The Orphan of Zhao – along with some work as a hero and some hand gesture work such as the lotus flower. It was a brilliant, albeit brief peek into the world of Jing Ju and we are very grateful for Tiffany’s guidance and tutelage.

&Juliet – Theatre Excursion

On Wednesday 19 June, the Year 8 Drama Cohort headed to the Sydney Lyric Theatre for the musically brilliant and hilarious & Juliet, asking the question: what if Romeo’s ending was Juliet’s beginning?  The musical flips the script on Shakespeare in a hilarious and poignant story of self-discovery and second chances.

The students really seemed to enjoy it, – it was ladened with recognisable pop songs from Katy Perry, Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, Ariana Grande, Pink, Justin Timberlake, (et al) sung with lyrics adjusted accordingly to amp up the humour.

Student Reflections:

Wednesday this week, Year 8 Drama went to the Sydney Lyric Theatre to watch the musical & Juliet. The modern take on the classic Shakespeare play was one of the most fun, colourful and upbeat musicals I have ever seen. The songs chosen for the performance were not original, but I thought they were always perfect for the scene they were in. One of my favourite parts of the excursion was the Q&A we participated in at the end of the day. It was super interesting to hear how some of the cast started acting, and the process of how the musical was rehearsed. Overall, I really enjoyed this opportunity!

On Wednesday, the Year 8 Drama cohort were very lucky to go on an excursion to see the musical & Juliet at The Lyric Theatre. This show is unlike any musical performance I have ever seen. Being a jukebox musical, & Juliet uses well-known songs and puts them into a different context. I think that this type of musical really resonates with an audience because all the songs are well-known, encouraging everyone to sing along. In terms of the plot, & Juliet reimagines the story of Juliet from Shakespeare’s classic play Romeo and Juliet. Instead of following the original tragic ending, the musical explores what would happen if Juliet chose to live after Romeo’s death. Juliet goes on a journey of self-discovery, love, and empowerment, challenging traditional gender roles and expectations along the way. The creative use of pop songs, integrated into the storyline, adds an engaging and modern twist to this timeless tale. The plot combined with the songs were meaningful yet light at the same time, exploring themes of gender and identity. A few of the cast members were non-binary, and it was interesting to hear their perspective. They mentioned that, unlike any other musical, they felt a strong sense of connection with their characters. This is because many musicals hitting the worldwide stage are often rigid in their portrayal of gender diversity.

I felt that this musical is the best I have ever seen for several reasons. The lighting was perfectly balanced, and the sound design was impeccable, ensuring the music was never too loud to overshadow the singers. The set changes were some of the slickest and quietest I had ever seen, seamlessly enhancing the performance. The storyline conveys a powerful message: finding true love isn’t the ultimate goal, and a happy ending isn’t always necessary for fulfillment, with this realisation unfolding gradually throughout the story. After hearing insights from some of the cast members, the show took on an even deeper meaning for the audience to go away and reflect on. Overall,  & Juliet was impactful because it broke traditional moulds and presented a contemporary take on love and identity.
