Year 9
Jewish Museum and Synagogue Excursion
On Tuesday 4 June, Yr 9 students attended a joint Christian Studies and History excursion to the Sydney Jewish Museum and the Great Sydney Synagogue to enrich their learning about Judaism and the Holocaust.
See the below reflection from Bowen Shiao:
As a cohort, Redlands had the wonderful opportunity to learn about Judaism from the Jewish Synagogue and develop an appreciation of the touching and heartfelt stories of Holocaust survivors from the Sydney Jewish Museum. Having the privilege to experience this journey full of rich history, culture and spirituality, it has helped us to understand the vibrant culture that we aren’t often exposed to as much on a daily basis and encounter new traditions past through generations of such a strong yet fascinating community. When moving to the museum and hearing the stories of the Holocaust survivors, it made me feel an immense amount of compassion for those who shared their stories of unimaginable resilience and bravery. I was struck by their strength and determination of hope amidst the darkest times, reminding me of how fortunate we are to live in a safe country far from war, where peace and equality are commonly demonstrated. It also made me reflect on just how important it is to remember those who passed and to acknowledge individuals who all deserved so much more. Since we sometimes overlook or are unaware of the struggles of others, hearing about other people’s adventures and experiences also served as a reminder to many of us of their tremendous resilience.
Leaving the museum and synagogue, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to learn from the Jewish community. This visit was not just an educational trip but a meaningful journey to understanding the viewpoints and cultures of other’s experiences and backgrounds.
