Year 9
The Musical
Good luck to the 23 Year 9 students who have played a role producing this year’s musical – Legally Blonde.
After months of preparation and rehearsals, we look forward to seeing the final product over the next three days.
Year 9 Assembly – Keep/Stop/Start
Last Friday during our fortnightly Year 9 Assembly we asked students to step back and examine the nature of our cohort of students at Redlands. It was a very different format to our normal assemblies as student were given time in small groups to respond to three prompts:
- KEEP/CONTINUE: What has worked and what are we doing well that we don’t need to change?
- STOP: What’s not working or what holding us back?
- START: What’s a brand-new idea or project you want to pursue?
A member from each group was then asked to give some quick feedback on a point raised in their discussion in front of the whole cohort.

It was an interesting exercise in understanding student perception and facilitating a voice for concerns in a public forum.
Students demonstrated excellent critical thinking and reflection skills in engaging with this activity, and it was great to hear them recognise their collective strengths, as well as consider areas for improvement. Strong commitment to cocurricular life and support of close friends were identified as areas that are working well for the group. On the flip side, students recognised the importance of developing their broader relationships within the cohort to ensure that everyone is equally included and respected.
We concluded the assembly by crystallising the main takeaways: We want to see growth in our ability to be inclusive and treat each other with respect. However, we also dive head first into opportunities, thrive on the company of others and demonstrate an excellent ability to foster strong connections with our friends and teachers.
Subject Focus – Commerce
Year 9 Redlands students were treated to a visit from CEO of Australian Payments Plus, Lynnn Kraus, as they navigated the digital payments landscape. The way in which Australians are making payments is changing. New payment methods are emerging, often enabled by mobile technology, while transactional use of cash is declining. Examining these trends forms part of the Commerce syllabus.
AP+ sit at the forefront of digital payments in Australia, who better to guide us through a changed landscape than the major player? Students mapped the evolution of payment methods along a technological timeline, analysed the suitability of various payment methods for a diverse range of items and experiences and evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of prioritising digital-first initiatives on a national scale, including who might be left behind in the transition and how we are increasingly innovating to safeguard individuals’ security in an increasingly digitised world. We were also lucky enough to have Emilie Vincent along for the ride who shared a little about her Positive Impact Work— something we know Generation Alpha will prioritise when they enter the world of work.
Balmoral Swim – Sunday 24th March
The Balmoral Swim Schools Relay Challenge is back! On Sunday morning, 24 March, local schools will come together to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute and have fun participating in an open water swim relay. Each team consists of four swimmers, and each swimmer will swim a 200 m leg of the relay. Participants can choose to swim in their year category or an older category, and the entry cost is a $20 donation per swimmer.
Not a swimmer? No problem! You can still support the cause by donating to the Redlands fundraising page to help raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute. This is a fantastic opportunity to come together, have some fun, and raise funds for a great cause.

Navigating assessments due on the same day as Sports Carnivals and Cocurricular Events
For all students in Years 7 to 10 who are absent due to a sports carnival or cocurricular event and have a take-home assessment that falls on the same day, they are still expected to submit the assessment on time. No deadline extensions will be granted.
If the assessment is a formal in class assessment or exam and a student will miss it due to the carnival or co-curricular event, they should inform their teacher at least a week in advance so that the teacher can arrange an alternative day and time for the student to sit the formal assessment or exam.
