Issue 8 2024 Term 1 Week 8 - 21 Mar 2024

From the Principal

At Redlands, we have a strategic commitment to sustainably managing the resources, facilities and grounds of the School whilst continually engaging our students and the wider community in this endeavour.

Over the past few years Redlands has introduced a number of new initiatives to reduce our impact on the environment with the aim to change and shape the way future generations live. This focus on successfully integrating and advocating sustainable best practices along with the introduction of our Sustainability Strategy, Sustainability Policy and Sustainability Framework led to Redlands being awarded the 2023 Sustainable School of the Year at the 2023 NSW Environmental Education Awards. A very proud moment for us all, recognising the hard work of many.

We are delighted to share our 2023 Sustainability Report that provides a summary of our journey to date and also maps a way forward to tomorrow in support of our objective to be recognised as a sustainability innovator, locally and globally.

On Tuesday I was pleased to join Ms Van de Peer and three of our Year 12 leaders in speaking to our current Year 7 and 8 students about the Year 9 Moonbah Program commencing next year. Alfie, Antonio and Eva all shared the positive impact that the residential experience of Winter School has had on them. I also joined Secondary School Captains, Jazz and Isaac, and Junior School Captains, Amelie and Pax, at the Junior School Assembly on Tuesday in speaking about the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones, as that is where “the magic happens.

This term it has been wonderful seeing all of the efforts of the many Secondary School students and staff involved in the production of this year’s Musical, Legally Blonde, and I can’t wait to see their performance tonight!

Community Update

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the first term of school.  The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) have all been actively engaged in bringing our various groups together both socially and operationally through year and cocurricular group events and activities.

We welcomed more than 200 parents, grandparents, students and carers onto the Junior Campus early this week for our Junior School Open Morning. Students from Year 6 and Year 2, supported by our leadership team, hosted small group tours answering questions and providing a wonderful insight into life at Redlands for our guests. Redlands reputation as a leading school of choice for families both nationally and internationally continues to grow. Through personalising each student’s development and growth, our students leave school truly life ready and prepared to adapt, create and thrive.

Redlands cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are.  We are  proud of our warm, diverse and inclusive school community. Our School is enriched by those from interstate and overseas, with more than 50 countries represented in our student cohort. This week the School celebrated Harmony Week, an annual event that encourages people to share the message that ‘everyone belongs’. Our Prep School kicked off their Harmony Week activities in a splash of orange, celebrating our School’s rich cultural diversity with a wide range of activities, learning experiences, classroom conversations and events.

A reminder that our community are invited to attend an Easter reflection, prayer and connection on Wednesday 27 March from 7.30am at St Peter’s Church, Cremorne. A light breakfast will be provided and I am reliably informed that Easter eggs may also be available for tasting.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly or the wider Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Redlanders Business Breakfast

The Redlanders Business Breakfast: Towards Net Zero showcased our talented Alumni and the strength of our wider community.

A panel of Redlander Alumni Sustainability experts shared their knowledge on this strategic topic last Thursday 14 March at the Ernst & Young offices, Sydney.  A fascinating morning where Technological transformation, effective incentive schemes and supporting policies were named to make a significant impact alongside individual choices for super investments and electricity suppliers. Thank you to the panellists Melanie Zeppel, Nina Cooke, Ben Heraghty and Chris Nunn for facilitating this discussion and Kimberlee Chipper Redlands Sustainability Manager, to share an update on Redlands priorities and achievements in this space.

This event would not be possible without the dedicated team from the Redlander Alumni Association led by Natalie Davies, and Kim Flatman Redlands Alumni Coordinator.

There are more breakfasts coming in Term 2 and 3, please stay tuned.

High Country Campus, a Much Loved Part of Life at Redlands for Over a Century

For over a century, our High Country Campus in Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains region has been a much loved location for our students. When Year 12 students leave the school, camps and Winter school are among the top three programs they enjoyed at Redlands.

This facility, the development of which was supported by the Redlands Parents & Friends Association, offers the greatest array of possibilities for both curriculum fieldwork and experiential learning. The campus is utilised for both outdoor education camps and also Redlands Winter School, which offers Year 10 students a unique opportunity to combine their studies with Snowsports training.

To learn more on how to support the School’s efforts to expand the extraordinary High Country Campus, please contact me directly or visit High Country Campus Appeal.

Redlands Parents and Friends

As we celebrate Harmony Week, it is an opportune time to celebrate the wonderful diversity in our school community and among our volunteer collective. At the RPFA, we value deeply that our volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they have the heart* to contribute to our school community.

So are you ready to make a heartfelt contribution? We have the perfect opportunity for you….

Walks on Tracks

Weekly guided walks around the northern Sydney area are organised by Ann Marie, a wonderful RPFA volunteer. This is a great way to meet other Redlands parents and get in shape, plus a wonderful way to spend a morning discovering the many paths of the Sydney area.

The invitation for walks is open, so if you have friends or family who you think would like to come along, please feel free to bring them. Dogs are also welcome on most walks, look for the ???? below .

Walks are roughly 1 1/2- 2 hours and for those with the time we love to stop for a coffee afterwards. We have planned all the walks for the term so mark your calendars.  Next three shared here:

  • Wed 27 March: Centennial Park. Meet at the Green House Café on Grand Drive for a 8.40am departure. ????
  • Wed 3 April: Cammeray to Northbridge. Meet at Tunks Park, brothers Ave Cammeray
  • Wed 10 April: Mosman to Rocks. Meet at Mosman Ferry, Avenue Road Mosman. No dogs as we will take the ferry back.

Any questions, please contact Ann Marie on 0406 691 533.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books, including annual attendance at the Sydney Writer’s festival in May. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

  • Wed 3 April we will be discussing The God of No Good by Sita Walker as an evening session. Stay tuned here for the location.
  • For our May meeting we will be reading a debut crime-thriller by local author, Lynne Johnson, The Bait Trap.

Behind the Scenes with RPFA: Meet your RPFA Committee

The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA) is a group of committed parents who support the broad activities of the School’s diverse community. The RPFA is your first point of contact for Redlands community events or support. Check back here each week to meet 2024 committee members and be inspired for how you can get involved.

RPFA Five

  • Name: Michelle McDonald
  • Role: RPFA Committee Member
  • Kiddo: Daniel Year 5

If you could choose a RPFA theme song what would be the title name?

PROUD by Heather Small. “We can be so many people”. Be a positive force in the effort to make your community stronger.

Why did you decide to join the RPFA, and what do you love most about it?

The Catherines (you know who you are:) …..and seriously, for the first time in many years, our family will not be moving every two years and this meant I could commit to contributing to a community that would be such a big part of shaping our son’s life.

What advice would you give to a parent or carer looking to get more involved in the school?

You don’t need to make a big commitment; help with an excursion, become part of a team to bring to life a community event, cook a sausage sizzle at a sport event, donate when you can, your contribution is valued no matter how big or small and your kiddos love seeing you supporting their school community.

If you could trade places with your children for a day, what would you most want to experience?

A term at the High Country Campus!

The Week in Pictures

Thank you to all the Class Parents arranging these wonderful events for us!

Great start to the day for the Walks on Tracks ladies and pups!

Do you have pictures of parent / family get-togethers you want to share?

Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Illuminate Scholars Program

The Term 2 Illuminate Scholars Program will be open for bookings tomorrow. Students who need structured support with study and assessment preparation will really benefit from the personal attention and guidance from a range of Academic Coaches.

Step Beyond Awards

The Week 8 Step Beyond Award were given to Year 7 students Charlie Benfield and Mila Lipscomb – huge congratulations!

Moonbah Program

At the assembly this week, Year 7 and 8 heard from Mr Corcoran and me, as well as three Year 12 students who each spent a term at our High Country Campus at Winter School.  Mr Corcoran talked about the WHY – why we so strongly believe in the Moonbah Program and the opportunities for growth this Year 9 program, set to launch in 2025, will bring.

Mr Corcoran talked about

  • The value of a holistic education
  • Having a go
  • The benefits of immersive learning in the modern world
  • Supporting Year 9 to be independent
  • Strategies to enable personal growth

Some typical and normal emotions were explored with Year 7 and 8. Feeling a range of mixed emotions such as excitement and nervousness is to be expected. Students will have a range of questions and the Year 12 students confirmed that they too had these questions and felt these emotions before they attended Winter School.

Antonia Morgan (Year 12) shared the following message with Year 7 and 8:

It’s okay to feel nervous about it. In Year 9 I remember feeling a mix of excitement and apprehension when I first arrived at Moonbah, unsure of what to expect, But all those nerves quickly disappeared once I settled into the rhythm of community living. Living in a boarding house isn’t just about having a place to sleep—it’s about finding a community to belong to. What I remember most about my experiences is not how many ski runs I got in one day, but the late-night chats with roommates, the shared meals in the dining hall, and every time I met a new person made a new memory and branched me out of my comfort zone. For me at least, I know that the friends I made at this program are ones I have kept close up to Year 12 and like they were when I was down there, they are still my support network.

There are challenges along the way – like learning to navigate communal spaces, balancing independence with responsibility and, for some, being away from home but those challenges are what makes the experience so rewarding. Spending a term in a boarding environment allows for a lot of self-growth whether you expect it or not and allows you to feel more confident in your own shoes. And for me at least, my worries about being away from home disappeared quite quickly when I realised I had basically signed up for a sleepover with an entire new family.

Whilst I recognise that it could be a nervous idea, my advice to you would be to embrace the adventure and have trust in the incredible community that awaits you. You’ll never regret doing it but you will if you don’t.

Upcoming Student Events

There are some exciting events emerging on the Secondary School Calendar this weekend and next week. I wish all of the students involved in the Musical Legally Blonde the absolute best for their shows, which commence this evening! Break a leg!

2024 Cross Country Carnival

This Carnival isn’t just any ordinary event; it’s a celebration of House and School Spirit! It’s not just about the competition; it’s about coming together as a school community to cheer each other on and demonstrate our unity. It is also an important opportunity to earn House Points!

Navigating assessments due on the same day as Sports Carnivals and Cocurricular Events

For all students in Years 7 to 10 who are absent due to a sports carnival or cocurricular event and have a take-home assessment that falls on the same day, they are still expected to submit the assessment on time. No deadline extensions will be granted.

If the assessment is a formal in class assessment or exam and a student will miss it due to the carnival or cocurricular event, they should inform their teacher at least a week in advance so that the teacher can arrange an alternative day and time for the student to sit the formal assessment or exam.

NSW School Vaccination Program 2024

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

  • Meningococcal ACWY vaccine

The vaccination will only be provided at school if consent has been received.  To provide consent for vaccination online follow this link.

Year 9

The Musical

Good luck to the 23 Year 9 students who have played a role producing this year’s musical – Legally Blonde.

After months of preparation and rehearsals, we look forward to seeing the final product over the next three days.

Year 9 Assembly – Keep/Stop/Start

Last Friday during our fortnightly Year 9 Assembly we asked students to step back and examine the nature of our cohort of students at Redlands. It was a very different format to our normal assemblies as student were given time in small groups to respond to three prompts:

  • KEEP/CONTINUE: What has worked and what are we doing well that we don’t need to change?
  • STOP: What’s not working or what holding us back?
  • START: What’s a brand-new idea or project you want to pursue?

A member from each group was then asked to give some quick feedback on a point raised in their discussion in front of the whole cohort.

It was an interesting exercise in understanding student perception and facilitating a voice for concerns in a public forum.

Students demonstrated excellent critical thinking and reflection skills in engaging with this activity, and it was great to hear them recognise their collective strengths, as well as consider areas for improvement. Strong commitment to cocurricular life and support of close friends were identified as areas that are working well for the group. On the flip side, students recognised the importance of developing their broader relationships within the cohort to ensure that everyone is equally included and respected.

We concluded the assembly by crystallising the main takeaways: We want to see growth in our ability to be inclusive and treat each other with respect. However, we also dive head first into opportunities, thrive on the company of others and demonstrate an excellent ability to foster strong connections with our friends and teachers.

Subject Focus – Commerce

Year 9 Redlands students were treated to a visit from CEO of Australian Payments Plus, Lynnn Kraus, as they navigated the digital payments landscape. The way in which Australians are making payments is changing. New payment methods are emerging, often enabled by mobile technology, while transactional use of cash is declining. Examining these trends forms part of the Commerce syllabus.

AP+ sit at the forefront of digital payments in Australia, who better to guide us through a changed landscape than the major player? Students mapped the evolution of payment methods along a technological timeline,  analysed the suitability of various payment methods for a diverse range of items and experiences and evaluated the advantages and disadvantages of prioritising digital-first initiatives on a national scale, including who might be left behind in the transition and how we are increasingly innovating to safeguard individuals’ security in an increasingly digitised world. We were also lucky enough to have Emilie Vincent along for the ride who shared a little about her Positive Impact Work— something we know Generation Alpha will prioritise when they enter the world of work.

If the assessment is a formal in class assessment or exam and a student will miss it due to the carnival or co-curricular event, they should inform their teacher at least a week in advance so that the teacher can arrange an alternative day and time for the student to sit the formal assessment or exam.

Year 8

Week 8 – Rock and Rolling through the Week

This week we kick started things off with some energy through a phenomenal performance from resident Yr 8 guitarist, Andy Budden. Andy jammed out for us with a 7-minute Blues based electric guitar track as we entered Redlands Hall for our Year Assembly on Monday. His stage presence and confidence were wonderful to see and everyone had their heads bopping along to the beat. The cohort offered a suitably thunderous round of applause!

A special surprise also awaited me and our Assistant Year Advisor, Ms Wang, at the end of the assembly, as a collection of students surprised us by offering us thanks for the time and effort we had put into organising and supporting the cohort on our recent camp. Beyond the flowers and giant ‘thank you’ cards that were created, the gratitude and appreciation shown were a beautiful indicator of the thoughtful, compassionate and value-minded young people we are developing at the School.

Yr 9 Moonbah Program 2025

During our Stage Assembly on Tuesday, Mr Corcoran, Principal, and Ms Van de Peer, Head of Secondary School, spoke to Yr 7 and Yr 8 about the new Moonbah Experiential Learning Program. Excitingly, our current Yr 8s will be trailblazers in this space, being the first cohort, in 2025, to engage in this immersive learning experience at our High Country Campus in Moonbah, near Jindabyne. A collection of Yr 12 student leaders also shared their amazing experiences spending a term at the High Country Campus during their time at Winter School. They spoke of great experiences, camaraderie and wonderful personal growth, as they navigated living away from home and together with peers for a term.

It certainly looks like it will be an amazing opportunity for adventure and new learning for our cohort – as they step outside of their comfort zone and into that space ‘where the magic happens’ – and I look forward to seeing how students will embrace this experience. Student were informed that further information about the Moonbah program can be found by visiting the FAQ section on Pulse.

Redlands Musical – Legally Blonde

Good luck to everyone who is part of the Legally Blonde Musical this week. A huge amount of effort goes into making this show a success so thank you to everyone who has given their time and efforts over the past few months. We can’t wait to see the show.

A huge shout out to our Yr 8 Musical team listed below!

2024 Secondary School Cross Country Carnival

The Cross Country Carnival is a compulsory event for Year 7 and 8 students. The Carnival is a significant school event that contributes to House and School Spirit. Students who are unable to compete will still attend to support their friends and offer assistance with the event. If your child is unable to attend due to exceptional circumstances on the day, please email ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au by 9.00am.

As this event is held off-site, it is a requirement that parents and/or carers complete the EdSmart online permission for your son or daughter.

Redlands buses will transport all students to and from the event and all students are to arrive at school at the regular time.

English Writing Competitions

There are some exciting opportunities for eager students to flex their writing muscles this term and next with the following writing competitions now open for submissions from students in Yrs 7-12:

We encourage all students to have a go at crafting a piece of writing. Whether it is based on work they have done in their English class or something they have composed out of their own interest, writing a piece that is judged externally is a great way to gain validation for effort and skill.

Year 7

It’s hard to believe we are already in Week 8. There have been so many incredible moments for Yr 7 students. We have noticed some authentic acts of kindness and compassion across our Year Group and we would like to acknowledge everyone who is part of our Yr 7 community, as we all know it really does ‘take a village to raise a child’.

Getting the Little Things Right

As we are reaching the end of Term 1, we would like to reiterate the importance of ‘getting the little things right’. It is often the case that when we feel tired or overwhelmed we can often let some of our good habits slide. Maintaining an effective routine is crucial in setting us up for a positive day. Punctuality, organisation, uniform, behaviour and engagement are important components of a successful school journey.

Legally Blonde The Musical

Good luck to everyone who is taking part in the Legally Blonde Musical this week. A huge amount of effort goes into making this show a success. Thank You to everyone who has given their time and efforts over the past few months. We can’t wait to see the show.

A big shout out to our Yr 7 Musical team…

Y7 Mobile Library

Yr 7 students will have the unique opportunity to engage with our very own mobile library during some Tutor Times to complement our Pastoral Care Program. Regular reading has so many benefits, including increasing vocabulary, comprehension and fluency. Reading also serves as a stress-reliever, providing relaxation and developing empathy by offering different perspectives. Exposure to various writing styles sparks creativity and helps develop focus and concentration skills.

Thank you to Mrs Young, Dr Alice and our wonderful team in the Roseby Library who have curated a fantastic book collection based on popularity and suitability for our Yr 7 students.

We are asking Yr 7 students to bring in their own reading book from home or spend some time perusing our collection during Tutor Time.

 Shout Outs

Well done to Charlie Benfield and Mila Lipscombe who achieved a Step Beyond award in our Stage Assembly this week for their contribution to the recent International Women’s Day event.

A huge congratulations goes to Rafi Nicholas and Bear Whitelaw who sailed for the RSYS Squadron on Saturday, winning 6/7 races and making the quarterfinals.

On Saturday, Owen Beck participated for the Sydney Swans competing against ARA First Nations at Moore Park. Owen was one of only 28 U13s Academy players from across Sydney who were selected. A fantastic achievement!

Uniform Guidelines

The act of donning a school uniform extends beyond clothing; it fosters a profound sense of belonging and community. Additionally, it levels the playing field, liberating students from the pressures of conforming to ever-changing fashion trends. It is essential that your child arrives at school impeccably attired in the appropriate school uniform each day. Below, we outline specific guidelines pertaining to our uniform standards:

Shoes

  • Polished, black, laced, leather, black‑soled school shoes (not leather trainers).

Hair

  • Hair is to be styled, and tied up neatly, so that it is away from eyes, ears, and collar. Longer hair is to be tied back with navy and hair coloured accessories.
  • No hair dye is permitted.
  • Mullet hairstyles are not permitted.

Jewellery/Nails/Make-Up

  • No jewellery is allowed, other than a single or one pair of plain gold or silver studs in earlobes. A wrist watch may be worn.
  • No nail polish is allowed other than clear.
  • Nails are to be clipped to a practical and safe length.
  • No make-up is permitted.
  • Hair accessories not to be worn on wrists.

In the event that a student is found to not meet these guidelines, a uniform demerit will be issued. Accumulating three uniform demerits within a single school term will result in a formal Friday After School Detention.

We appreciate and thank you for your cooperation in upholding these standards, as they contribute to the overall excellence and professionalism of our school community.

Assembly Theme

In this week’s assembly we hosted a visit from the Redlands Secondary School Captains, Jazz Black and Isaac Brooks, who introduced the Yr 12 theme for the year – Step Beyond. The benefits of stepping beyond one’s comfort zone were reinforced by our School Captains, Pax and Amelie, who shared experiences of when they had done this and the positive impact it made on them.  In our School’s context we believe that finding opportunities for our students to step beyond their comfort zone is paramount for their personal growth and development. It’s in those moments of discomfort that we truly discover our capabilities and potential.

Our Year 5 students have definitely had the opportunity to ‘step beyond’ through their participation at this week’s camp in the Southern Highlands. For each student this will look different; it may be by participating in unfamiliar activities such as outdoor team-building exercises or engaging in group challenges that encourage them to collaborate, take risks and overcome obstacles. Or it might just be facing the challenge of being away from home for a few days. We hope that through these experiences, students broaden their horizons, discover new talents and develop important life skills that extend far beyond the camp environment.

The Junior School camp experiences form one element of Redlands Outdoor Education program and as they move into their Secondary School years, students from Year 7 have the opportunity to access the High Country Campus located outside Jindabyne in the Snowy Mountains region. The facility offers the greatest array of possibilities for both curriculum fieldwork and experiential learning. The campus is utilised for both outdoor education camps and also Redlands Winter School, which offers Year 10 students a unique opportunity to combine their studies with Snowsports training.

To learn more how to support the school’s efforts to expand the extraordinary High Country Campus, please contact the school’s Director of Development, Mrs Dana Casimaty, dcasimaty@redlands.nsw.edu.au or visit High Country Campus Appeal.

International Day: Tuesday 9 April

Parents are encouraged to connect with your child’s class teacher if you are able to present or share your own cultural backgrounds and experiences utilising the knowledge we have in our community and connecting home and school further.

Harmony Week

Monday 18 – Sunday 24 March

Orange was the colour of the day today as we celebrated Harmony Day and inquired together into the ‘why we celebrate it’ in our classes. Respect, as we all know is one of the Redlands values and is continuously used in teachable moments in the early years. This week we have again focused on what respecting others really means and how we can demonstrate the value daily. Our students have been using books, songs, art and craft, music and examples of food to show how diverse we are. In response to this sharing, we model and guide how to inquire about these things through questioning and curiosity rather than judgement and baseless comments.

Sadly, there are too many experiences in our students’ lives that can start to form opinions, judgements and bias in the early years. You only have to turn on the endless array of reality TV options or news items to see how quickly little minds can absorb unhelpful judgements, stereotypical opinions and unkind ways that people talk to and treat each other. The early years is our small opportunity in time to cement the true value of how to respect each other through thoughtful and inquiring words and acts.

Please join me is discussing the importance of Harmony Day with your child and encourage them through conversation that it means so much more than just wearing orange for the day, it is a ‘snapshot’ in time for us all to remember the importance of respecting others and celebrating the richness that diversity brings to us all.

Calling Parent Volunteers

International Day 9 April

The wonderful Redlands International Day will be held on 9 April. This is a day for us to celebrate the rich international flavour that makes Redlands the diverse and inclusive community that it is.

As always, we would love to welcome parents into our classrooms who would like to share their own unique culture with our students. This may take the shape of storytelling, books, costumes, music. dancing or art and craft experiences.

If you would like to come in and share with your child’s class and grade between 11am-1pm, please get in touch with your specific grade coordinator (Ms Knox, Mrs Hepers or Mrs Eggleton) and they will be able to coordinate the activities and volunteers.

We are also hoping that some our families will once again share special food with the children at lunchtime. Last year this was a big hit and the students loved experiencing different tastes from around the globe. Please get in touch with me directly if you would like to be share in our lunchtime global feast.

Thank you to those families who have already reached out offering time and food! The cut-off date for volunteering will be Friday 22 March. As a team, we will then sit down and coordinate what the day will look like.

Raise Dough: Bake a Difference

What: A bake sale for Raise Foundation
When: Monday 25 March lunchtime (classes will be staged)

How can we be involved: Get together and spend Sunday Funday baking your favourite treats!

  • Please label any Tupperware containers so they can come back to you.
  • Drop off on Monday morning in the Prep Meeting Room.
  • No nuts or nut products to be used and label any Dairy of Gluten Free options.
  • Bring gold coins in if you would like to buy any cakes!

Junior Campus families and students are encouraged to support this Year 10 student initiative to raise awareness and donations for Raise Foundation.

Raise provides youth mentoring to 13–15-year-old students around Australia. These young people are grappling with issues like anxiety, depression, loneliness and bullying. With 1 in 4 young people saying they feel lonely all or most of the time, there’s never been a better time to support the work of Raise Foundation.

Not only are we providing access to a trained mentor we are supporting our Year 10 Redlands students who devised this fundraising initiative in their Commerce group project last year. Raise Foundation loved the concept so much they wanted to use it immediately. We have just heard word that one of their corporate partners utilised our students’ concept and raised $3000 in a single event! That’s enough to sponsor 1.5 entire mentor/mentee programs. Let’s see if we can do better!

Mrs Huon and Mrs Thomas – Reggio Emilia Study Tour

Mrs Huon and Mrs Thomas will be travelling to Italy in April to attend a study tour of the schools in Reggio Emilia. The Municipal early childhood programs in Reggio Emilia, Northern Italy, for children aged three months to six years, are internationally acclaimed for the inspirations, challenges and provocations they provide for all those concerned with the care and education of young children. Founded and developed by educational theorist, Loris Malaguzzi, the schools demonstrate a distinctive and innovative curriculum and pedagogy as well as a method of school organisation which recognises the potential of young children to question, reflect, problem-solve, theorise and experiment. The schools in Reggio Emilia demonstrate, by making children’s learning visible, that children are capable of devising creative ways of knowing, understanding and making connections and meaning. There is a particular emphasis on the role of the environment, both social and physical, and the cultural, geographic, political, economic and historical experiences of Reggio Emilia are incorporated into learnings. Mrs Huon and Mrs Thomas depart on 5 April. Their classes will be covered by Redlands House staff and permanent casual staff over the last week of term.

AFL

On Saturday Owen Beck (Yr 7) participated in the Sydney Swans ARA First Nationals Program Games at Tramway Oval (Moore Park). Only 28 U13s Academy players from across Sydney were selected, therefore making this a huge honour and privilege for Owen! On the day he was able to display his leadership, passion and football skills on the field, whilst promoting the game of AFL.

The Games were live streamed via SportsCast Australia, and Owen’s U13s team won their friendly game 77-13.

The ARA First Nations Foundation Program is part of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy and aims to increase participation / involvement of First Nations People throughout the Sydney Swans zone, from Coffs Harbour to Shellharbour.

As AFL continues to grow at Redlands we wanted to share Owen’s achievement with the wider Redlands community. And we’re especially looking forward to a successful AFL season this year with the School’s Junior Yr 7/8 representative team.

If parents wish grant permission for students to be picked up/leave from the training venue, this is to be communicated via email to jparsonage@redlands.nsw.edu.au. All student absences (trainings and games) need to be recorded through the Sport Absence Form. Students are encouraged to attend the fitness center more regularly to compliment their development within the sport. The Fitness Centre is open to all each morning. Opens Rugby will have an extra compulsory Fitness Centre commitment. Students are to bring footy boots (no metal studs) and mouthguards to EVERY session. If students play in any other protective wear they are encouraged to bring these to training – headgear/ shoulder pads.

Students will be unable to participate in contact drills without a mouthguard.

To note:

Season 2024 will see a change to the tackle height rule for all levels of Community Rugby across Australia. We’re thrilled to share that the tackle height has been reduced to below the sternum, making Rugby Union safer and reducing the risk of concussion significantly. These new rules have been trialled across the world including in NZ, England, France and have seen really positive results. There are diagrams and an explanation in pulse files on the Rugby page.

All Rugby students will undergo concussion briefing of updated school policies before the end of Term 1. This will also be communicated with parents/careers.

Sailing

Balmoral Swim 2024 – Next Sunday 24 March

General Sport Information

Fixtures

  • All student training and fixture details will be available to families under My Schedule on Redlands Pulse. Additionally, the weekly Fixtures (The Redlands Rhino) can be found on the Secondary School Sport page on Redlands Pulse from Wednesday each week. Please ensure you check Redlands Pulse Friday afternoon to ensure you have the latest fixture information.

Uniform

  • The Redlands sports uniform should be worn to all trainings and matches (students are not permitted to wear any non-Redlands branded clothing). In the event of inclement weather students should wear their Redlands fleece or sports tracksuit.
  • Students must wear trainer style sneakers that are preferably white with non-marking soles. It is part of our shared responsibility to ensure that students wear footwear that aligns with the activity to be undertaken. High top sneakers, Vans, Converse etc. are not appropriate for School Sport.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via Clipboard prior to missing any training session.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2024 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:
  • Have good behaviour, safe behaviour and appropriate language at all times.
  • Follow the driver (and supervising staff) instructions at all times.
  • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
  • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

 Wet Weather

  • We have been lucky enough to have a relatively dry winter and to start the summer season, we use a number of fields that are multi-purpose and all weather.
  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.
  • Students should bring with them a change of Redlands Sport Uniform (Thursdays only) or their school uniform (Tuesday) if there are light showers during training.

Summer Season Wrap Up

Congratulations to all students who represented Redlands each Saturday in Tennis, Touch, Girls Football and Mixed Basketball. The season now pauses for Winter Sport for Term 2 and Term 3 and we will resume the season with rounds 7 through to 12 in Term 4. While there are no finals or league ladders it is worth acknowledging those team who did not lose a game this season, the 5/6 Basketball team. Well done to all teams and thanks to our coaching staff in facilitating an enjoyable season for our students. In some external competitions, Redlands was also represented in the NSTA Primary Schools Challenge with 7 of our Year 5 and 6 students playing some great across the different divisions.

Summer Rep Sport students only: Commencing next week (Wednesday 20 March) your child will now be involved in Athletics Preparation and this will continue until the last week of Term 1. It is listed in your child’s activities on the Redlands App as JS Activities Prep.

Students are to wear their sports uniform as normal (joggers, hat and water bottle) no additional equipment is required.  They will be transported to Rotary Memorial Athletics track, Mowbray Rd, for their sport where they will undertake a program of instruction and participation for Athletics covering 50m, 100m, 200, 400m, 800, Long Jump, Shot Put and Discus events over the four weeks.

If you are one of those Summer Rep families who normally collect their child from their sport venue you may continue to do the same from Rotary Field just prior to bus boarding at 3:00pm. All other students will return to school for a normal 3:20pm dismissal time.

The students are very excited about this program and will prepare them for their upcoming units of Athletics in their PE classes next term.

Summer Non-Rep Students Only

Your season of Non-Rep Sport (Swimming, Surfing, Sailing, Gymnastics, Tennis, Kayaking, etc) will continue as normal each Wednesday until the rest of the term.

Paul Kelly Cup AFL Yr 5 and 6 Students

Thank you to those families who have completed the expression of interest for the AFL PKC. Named in honour of Sydney Swans legend and New South Wales footballer Paul Kelly, the cup is the Premier primary school AFL competition in the state. If we get enough interest will be entering 1 boys team and 1 girls team in the competitive competition which is a higher division than the ‘participation division’.
To select these teams we are currently inviting students in Years 5 and 6 to trial for a place in these teams. Each team will be capped at 16 players.  Please note not everyone who signs up will make a team. If you are interested in registering to trial for the team please complete the registration form which can be found here.

The sport calendar for Term 1 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2024 JS Sport Calendar

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.
