Secondary School Individual Portraits Catch Up Date
Friday 26 March
Any Secondary School student who was absent for their individual portrait photo on 5 March can attend a catch-up opportunity on Friday 26 March at 10.10am and 1.00pm in the Learning Hub classroom LH 2.2.
All students are required to be wearing their full school uniform, including blazers. Boys must be clean-shaven with hair that has been cut so that it is away from eyes, ears and collar. Girls with hair touching the collar should tie it back with navy accessories (elastics, ribbon, scrunchies). No hair dye, make-up or nail polish is permitted. No jewellery is to be worn other than one pair of plain gold or silver studs in ear lobes.
Pastoral Care “Looking Outward”
This term, Yr 9 has focused discussions in Pastoral Care around self-awareness and social-awareness, specifically focusing on inclusive language and behaviour as we reflect on how we speak to others and how we would like others to speak to us. As this is also a time in development where students are starting to push boundaries and experiment with their own language and behaviour toward others, we encourage discussions at home around a few key items that we have noticed to be quite challenging for some students, particularly in this first term. Some examples of behaviours our students would like to see more of during the school day are included below:
- Choosing appropriate and inclusive language for all genders and sexual preference
- Inviting mixed genders to play a sports game at Recess or Lunch
- Broadening friendship groups to include and welcome students of a different gender
- Stop using comments that may be offensive, ie. “that’s so gay”
- Recognising inappropriate comments regarding a peer’s background or culture and being sensitive to how questions or comments may be interpreted
- Ask inquisitive questions from a place of curiosity and celebrate each other’s cultural differences
- Acknowledging and following the “hands-off” policy at school
- Refrain from engaging in behaviour that could lead to personal injury – as outlined in the Student Planner pg 11, this includes horseplay, practical jokes and rowdiness
- Refrain from any unwanted physical interactions or altercations – if a student does not know whether the physical interaction is unwanted, students must refrain from engaging in these behaviours
- Treating others and speaking to others with respect at all times
- Having moral courage to stand up for what is believed to be right and just for oneself and for others
- If a student is asked to stop saying something or behaving in a particular way toward another student, this request must be accepted and respected
At this age, students are always encouraged to try and manage situations on their own first, when possible. However, if a situation does not improve, please encourage your son or daughter to reach out for support through their Tutor or Year Advisors. We always aim to manage situations discreetly and with your child’s feedback and voice.
If situations are reported to the School and a consequence is deemed appropriate, this is part of your son’s or daughter’s learning journey and allows time for reflection and goal setting for making more responsible decisions in the future. We appreciate your support and communication in these instances as you have chosen Redlands to be a part of the village that helps in raising your children.
