It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the first term of school. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) have all been actively engaged in bringing our various groups together both socially and operationally.
These community meetings and events provide a wonderful opportunity to stay connected and informed whilst also meeting other parents and friends of Redlands. The School continues to work on a number of initiatives to support a personal reconnection of our community on campus following the unfortunate break in our traditional calendar of events in 2020. We are delighted to be welcoming our Yr 7 parents and carers onto the Senior Campus on Monday evening, subject to favourable weather, in the first of these on campus initiatives. This Meet and Greet will enable our Yr 7 parents and carers to meet our Teachers, Tutors, Year Advisors and School Leadership team in an informal setting to establish those connections that we see as so important in strengthening the productive partnership between home and school.
As we continue to develop further community engagement opportunities on campus, we encourage a continued connection to the significant and diverse experience of our Class and Year Group parents, the RPFA and Friends of Groups that support our many and varied community activities and events.
We are fortunate at Redlands to have a community with a strong and generous tradition of service and giving. The Foundation Advisory Committee provides the School with experienced counsel and stewardship of our Foundation Office, providing resources and assistance in support of the School’s Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan. Our alumni network, the Redlanders Association, works towards fostering a fellowship between past students whilst honouring the heritage and past achievements of the School.
All of the important groups of committed and generous volunteer members highlight the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands and we thank them for their continued guidance and support.
As ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

From the Principal
I am pleased to inform the community that we have engaged Dr Tessa Opie from ‘In Your Skin: Relationships and Sexuality Education’ to support the School in the review and delivery of our sex education programs. Dr Opie will be visiting the School in May and will be running a range of professional development sessions for staff and also presenting a workshop for parents. At this stage, parents should keep the evening of Monday 10 May free, with details to be confirmed in due course. Dr Opie will visit the School again in Term 3 to run a series of workshops for students in Years 6 through to 12. Information regarding the sessions and topics covered will be provided in advance and discussed at the parent workshop in May. Dr Opie’s engagement with the School will include a train the trainer model for our teaching staff which will ensure that expertise is embedded within the School.
Last weekend I enjoyed the opportunity to attend a range of cocurricular activities and in particular our Jazz ‘Under’ the Garden event in the Edwards Auditorium on Saturday evening. As it has been quite some time since we were able to attend live music performances, it was wonderful to have parents in attendance to enjoy the exceptional quality of the Jazz Bands and Jazz Vocal Group, as well as the inspiring recordings of original compositions by our Music students. I was so impressed by the quality of their original works and the professional level of the recordings.
On Saturday we had a large number of teams playing Finals in ISA and other competitions and secured excellent results in Basketball, Touch Football, Tennis and Rowing at the Head of the River. I encourage you to head to the Secondary School Sports page to view the list of outstanding results.
As I write this article I am looking forward to attending the Sailing End of Season Dinner at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron this evening. As we were unable to hold these events last year, I look forward to celebrating in person with students, parents and staff.

Foundation
The Foundation Office is working on some exciting upcoming events. Preparations for the Arts Luncheon are well under way including researching our rich history in Performing and Visual Arts and important innovations and milestones that contributed to the advancement of Redlands curriculum in this field.
This Friday we are hosting a Redlanders parents morning tea to make connections among our past students who are current parents and also reflect on the extensive development of Redlands in recent decades, including the redevelopment of both campuses, new program offerings and the multicultural composition of our student body.
Redlands Arts Luncheon – Save the Date
This exciting event will celebrate the long history of Performing and Visual Arts at Redlands. This Luncheon will take place at Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, Wednesday 26 May, 12.00-3.00pm. Tickets will be on sale next week and information will be sent by email to all parents. There will be a limited capacity so do not hesitate to book early.
Proceeds from this event will be dedicated to the Belinda Oxley Scholarship to acknowledge her dedication to Redlands and her passion for education. This Redlands Foundation Scholarship is means-tested and is awarded annually for the entire six years of a Redlands Secondary School education.
We will be seeking support for raffle and auction prizes.
Belinda’s legacy from current staff – a passionate, inspiring and caring educator
Belinda contributed enormously to the Preparatory School at Redlands. She dedicated decades of her life to educating and inspiring hundreds of Redlands students. She was passionate about Visual Arts and made it a central part of her teaching when working with her students.
Belinda spent countless hours contributing to Redlands through curriculum planning, innovating new ways of teaching and organising events, such as Games Day, Sculptures in the Playground and the Yr 2 Camp.
She welcomed new staff into the School and took young teachers under her wing to help and advise them and always had time for everybody. If anyone needed help, she would be there offering assistance.
Belinda inspired generations of Redlands students, had a kind heart and displayed a genuine interest in all her students. She had a great sense of humour and we dearly miss her.

Assessment is Learning
Over the past week, I have noticed a large number of students, from all Year Groups, accessing support in the Study Centre. It is Assessment season. Meeting on Level 2 of the Redlands Learning Hub with my fellow English colleagues, students have been working on English assessments and, from the floors above, I can hear students studying Mathematics and HSIE subjects. It’s a hub of energy, thought and feedback. Some students work on their own, others in groups, and teachers are dotted around, guiding and encouraging. It’s a really lovely space to escape to at the end of a busy day.
This week after school I met with a number of students from my Yr 8 class who are composing practice paragraphs for an essay they are scheduled to write under timed conditions on Monday next week. Mostly, they are finessing their complex sentences so they can offer an analysis of the text, in a clear and cohesive manner. For Yr 8, this is pretty hard stuff. Seamlessly incorporating evidence from the text in the form of a quote, and then connecting this to the ‘big ideas’ of the text is no easy feat, but we learn as we go, and at times, the going is tough.
A realisation that many of the students have had in recent days is just how long it takes to prepare to write an essay, especially if you want to do it well. They look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them they need to practice under timed conditions at home on Saturday to see how it feels – and to test whether they can actually write their planned argument within the time limit. They continue to think I’m crazy when I tell them they should be ‘ready to roll’ three days before the scheduled assessment task, so they can take time to reflect, digest and practice. Of course, this requires organisation and self-management, which is something they are still learning. And this is what I am reiterating in class, sometimes more than the perspectives offered in the text – how you prepare for an assessment; the steps you take, the tips and tricks you learn along the way, the insights you gain about yourself – these are the real learnings. Monday’s Yr 8 English assessment is going to test a whole lot more than just their knowledge of a text. Assessments are often a struggle for students (and sometimes for teachers) but they are a great way to learn the skills of learning. I am looking forward to sitting back in class on Monday and watching my Yr 8s write furiously. They’ve come a long way this term and regardless of how well they respond to the essay question on the day, they’ve all grown. They’ve all learned.
Harmony, Not Bullying and Violence
Harmony Week celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our diverse nation. Next week, our Student Leaders will host a series of activities to promote Harmony Week at Redlands, where diversity and inclusion are valued highly and demonstrated proudly. Tomorrow, Friday 19 March is National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. This is an important day in our national calendar and this year we are being encouraged to ‘Take Action Together’. Redlands will be supporting this day by reiterating important messages for our students such as our bullying prevention measures, the need to challenge bullying behaviour and providing support for students who have experienced bullying. A focus on positive relationships and valuing each other’s differences and qualities, will be led by Yr 12 Prefects in Tutor Time next week.
Yr 7 Meet and Greet
Next Monday afternoon, we look forward to welcoming our Yr 7 Parents to the Fahl Garden for our annual Yr 7 Meet and Greet Evening. Yr 7 have made a significant impact on the School this term and are nicely settled into the Redlands way of life. Next Monday night they stay at home, and the teachers enjoy the opportunity to meet with their parents and discuss all things Yr 7 – learning, friendships, opportunities and insights. We are looking forward to sharing stories of the classroom, the playground, camp, sports, clubs and more.

Ides of March
Last Friday, Class of 2020 School Captain Isabel Simpson and classmate Lauren Burke, both former IB Latin students, kindly visited Redlands to mark the Ides of March. They taught the Yr 11 IB class translating poetry by Catullus together and discussed their Internal Assessment research dossiers on ekphrasis and the epic simile. At lunchtime, we had a party and a giveaway of antique Latin books to Latin students of all Year Groups, which was a roaring success. School Captain Theo Mirrlees-Black was spotted teaching students about metre in ancient poetry. A great day for Latin students!

Student Achievements
Congratulations to the Boys 17B and 17C Basketball teams who both won their ISA Grand Finals at the weekend. The boys displayed an amazing effort throughout their games and should be proud of what they have achieved.
Mock Trial Competition
The Yr 11 Mock Trial team had their first round and a convincing win in the NSW Law Society Mock Trial Competition this week, where they were up against Queenwood School for Girls. They were the defence in a criminal trial where the defendant (Louise Colin) was facing trial for breaking and entering a house belonging to someone else and stealing a number of designer items. Her friend (Callum Wardman-Browne) provided evidence to state that she would have never committed such a crime, and both witnesses were strong in their responses to the cross-examination questions. Our barristers (Sophia Maxwell and Jack Murray) provided solid opening and closing statements and showed quick-thinking skills in the cross-examination of the prosecution witnesses. They were supported well by their solicitor (Charlotte Harman) and the Clerk of the Court (Sophie McMillan).
Last year’s Midawarr incursion for Yr 9 was a wonderful opportunity for our students to make connections with and learn from the Yolngu community in East Arnhem Land. Although we couldn’t travel to meet the Yolngu elders in person, the experience provided a unique insight into Yolngu culture and ways of knowing. To build on this experience we are delighted to offer a tour to Arnhem Land in the June holidays to allow interested students to further deepen and extend their knowledge and understanding of Yolngu culture.
We launched the program for Yr 10 at a Year Assembly today. This is followed by a Parent Information Session on Thursday 25 March, 6.00pm on the Senior Campus. If you and your child are interested in this unique insight into our indigenous culture, please come along to learn more.
To indicate your attendance at the session or to register for further information, please see the letter sent out by Jon Gray last week via Engage. Booking forms, including Terms and Conditions, will be available on the night and via Redlands Pulse afterwards. The cost of the tour will be $4,635.

This is an exciting opportunity for Sebastian to further his career in film and television. Sebastian was also the 2020 Runner Up for the Carmen Duncan Scholarship provided by AAFTA in Los Angeles. Best of luck to Sebastian!
IGNITE – Week 9 Pastoral Activities
Over the last fortnight, the Term 1 IGNITE team have gathered to discuss ideas for their first activity which is based on ‘Resilience – Reframing Negativity and Stress Management.’
Below is a reflection by Sabrina Blasco and Finn Woodward, regarding what the Term 1 IGNITE team are focusing on for next week’s Tutor Time activity:
“Over the past week the Yr 10 IGNITE team has been looking at how to mitigate the impacts of stress. We have discussed that stress comes in many forms for many different people. Whether it is a school project or it is a family problem at home, stress can always seem like an unbearable and unmovable burden for students to carry upon their shoulders. And this is why the IGNITE team has recognised the importance of accepting and attempting to let go of that stress that can often weigh one down. Through meaningful discussions, as a team, we decided that we wanted to simplify stress down into smaller, more manageable, and tangible things so that we as students could more easily visualise what we are feeling.
In order to achieve this, we have decided to run an activity during Tutor Time. One of our ideas for an activity involves writing down all the things that have been causing stress on small pieces of paper and then rolling them up. Once the pieces of paper have been rolled up, the student will place them into a balloon and then start to inflate the balloon. Once the balloon is properly inflated the students will (dramatically) pop the balloon, letting all their stress go. We believe that this therapeutic activity will allow students to attempt to actively let go of stresses in their own lives.
Lastly, we would like to thank Mr Walker and Ms Martin for their immense support and help over the past week in allowing us to take initiative in our learning and relate and bond as a Year Group further.”

Pastoral Care “Looking Outward”
This term, Yr 9 has focused discussions in Pastoral Care around self-awareness and social-awareness, specifically focusing on inclusive language and behaviour as we reflect on how we speak to others and how we would like others to speak to us. As this is also a time in development where students are starting to push boundaries and experiment with their own language and behaviour toward others, we encourage discussions at home around a few key items that we have noticed to be quite challenging for some students, particularly in this first term. Some examples of behaviours our students would like to see more of during the school day are included below:
Choosing appropriate and inclusive language for all genders and sexual preference
Inviting mixed genders to play a sports game at Recess or Lunch
Broadening friendship groups to include and welcome students of a different gender
Stop using comments that may be offensive, ie. “that’s so gay”
Recognising inappropriate comments regarding a peer’s background or culture and being sensitive to how questions or comments may be interpreted
Ask inquisitive questions from a place of curiosity and celebrate each other’s cultural differences
Acknowledging and following the “hands-off” policy at school
Refrain from engaging in behaviour that could lead to personal injury – as outlined in the Student Planner pg 11, this includes horseplay, practical jokes and rowdiness
Refrain from any unwanted physical interactions or altercations – if a student does not know whether the physical interaction is unwanted, students must refrain from engaging in these behaviours
Treating others and speaking to others with respect at all times
Having moral courage to stand up for what is believed to be right and just for oneself and for others
If a student is asked to stop saying something or behaving in a particular way toward another student, this request must be accepted and respected
At this age, students are always encouraged to try and manage situations on their own first, when possible. However, if a situation does not improve, please encourage your son or daughter to reach out for support through their Tutor or Year Advisors. We always aim to manage situations discreetly and with your child’s feedback and voice.
If situations are reported to the School and a consequence is deemed appropriate, this is part of your son’s or daughter’s learning journey and allows time for reflection and goal setting for making more responsible decisions in the future. We appreciate your support and communication in these instances as you have chosen Redlands to be a part of the village that helps in raising your children.

Yr 8 Camp
The Yarrahapinni Ecology Centre is the base for our camp and students will spend one night at the centre and three nights camping in tents. The centre is located by the beach, which gives students excellent opportunities to explore the sand dunes, rock pools and mangroves nearby. Along with a focus on the natural landscape, our activities include hiking, canoeing, surfing, and a session with rangers learning about the indigenous inhabitants of the area and their culture.
Redlands prides itself on its inclusive, real world, coeducational environment, where each individual student is valued and encouraged to let their light shine. Our Camps are an integral component of a Redlands education. We wish to develop our students to be compassionate, confident and competent citizens in a rapidly changing world. Redlands continues to develop these programs in partnership with The Outdoor Education Group (OEG).

Year 7
NSW School Vaccination Program
All vaccination forms should have been handed into the Secondary School Office by now. If you still have not had your child return their form – please do so ASAP.
Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.
In 2021 the following vaccines will be offered to Yr 7 students:
Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement have been sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of your child:
Read all the information provided
Complete the consent form, including signing your name next to the vaccine/s you would like your child to receive
Return the completed consent form before 16 March. Students are required to drop consent forms off at the Secondary School Office.
Ensure that your child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.
Please note that if a student is absent from a clinic they will be offered any missed doses at subsequent clinics during Yrs 7 or 8 (for HPV and dTpa vaccination) and during Yr 10 (for Meningococcal ACWY vaccination). They do not need to go to their GP for these vaccines because they are absent from a clinic.
The following short videos have useful information about the vaccines and how the school immunisation clinics run.
A Record of Vaccination card will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories.

Cross Country Carnival
Congratulations to all our Yr 7 students for competing in the annual Carnival. We were really impressed with the efforts and positive attitude from the cohort.
A reminder that we are delighted to support the Bandage Bear Appeal again this year, as we look forward to raising money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
All of our Junior Campus students from Preschool to Yr 6 will enjoy a Teddy Bears’ Picnic with buddy classes enjoying lunch together and students are encouraged to bring in a teddy bear from home and make a gold coin donation.
This is a particularly special fundraiser for many in our community and having visited the Children’s Hospice, Bear Cottage, which is affiliated to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and the hospital itself, I know that our collective donation will have a significant impact on the lives of many families.
Balmoral Swim for Cancer
This Sunday, Redlands will be participating in the Balmoral Swim for Cancer Schools Relay Challenge at Balmoral Beach. The Schools Relay Challenge is a community-based initiative where schools help raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute, increase awareness of this important cause and importantly have fun participating in an open water swim relay.
We have a Yr 6 team who have entered and we wish Charlotte Algar, Katie Jennings, Evie Krallis and Tara Ward all the very best in their age group race which sees them each swim 200m in their relay team.
Please follow this link if you would like to donate to this worthwhile cause.
Year 5 Camp (23-26 March)
Next week sees the first of our 2021 Junior School camps as Yr 5 set off for Camp Wombaroo in the Southern Highlands. The children and staff are excited about the Camp and I am also looking forward to spending time with them next week, just as I will visit every Year Group on their respective camps during the first semester.
I will send parents an email update from Yr 5 Camp either on Wednesday night or Thursday morning depending on when I return to Sydney to give you a sense of how the trip is faring and we will also put some photos up in the Yr 5 section of Redlands Pulse during the week.
These special opportunities for teachers and students to interact with one another in an environment outside of the classroom often builds a platform for developing increased connections and insights upon returning to school, not to mention fostering potential new student friendships along the way. I am sure that the trip will provide some wonderful opportunities and memories for students and staff alike and I will share my observations and experiences through Note Day too.
International Day: Tuesday 30 March
Redlands will once again celebrate International Day on Tuesday 30 March in the final week of term. This will be a time for our community of 51 different nationalities to join together to celebrate both our rich, cultural diversity and international awareness. The event aligns with similar events on the Senior Campus and Year Groups will also be incorporating international perspectives in curriculum lessons. Teachers will be contacting parents who may be able to share their knowledge and experiences through a range of activities on the day.
As always, I am sure that the school will be awash with vibrant colour as we celebrate the day with students encouraged to wear national costume or colours from any chosen country on this day with a reminder that enclosed shoes and sun-safe clothes should be worn.
Uniform Shop
A reminder that students will be required to wear full winter uniform from the beginning of Term 2. Parents are now welcome to visit the Uniform Shop to purchase winter items or place an online order through Flexischools.
The Uniform Shop will be open on the following days during the holiday break: Wednesday 7 April, Thursday 15 April, Friday 16 April and Monday 19 April from 8.00am-4.00pm. Appointments can be made by clicking here.
Mensa
We were delighted to hear that Yr 6 student, Sam Ashby, has been accepted into Mensa based on his IQ being in the top 2% in his age group in Australia. Getting into Mensa is something that Sam has been striving for and he is excited to have achieved this goal.
School Service
As part of their IB Diploma, Redlands Secondary students engage in Service programs in the school or local community. For some students, they will return to the Junior School to support younger students in a range of areas and for us as teachers, it is a joy to reconnect with a number of students that we have taught in their formative years.
Currently, we have two students, Lara Cody and Edwina Magnus, who started in our Preschool and are now in Yr 11, providing particular support to a small group of students with their handwriting. The girls use a range of strategies to develop students’ fine motor skills which should contribute to improved handwriting and over the course of the year, we look forward to having other Secondary School complete aspects of Service on our campus with the younger students who always love having older students mentor them.
This week we have had many learning experiences for our students and staff where they have been able to explore the 2021 Harmony Week theme of Everyone Belongs. Our buddy classes have met each other to share ideas, we have embraced diversity in our own school environment and enjoyed many open and honest discussions around acceptance. I know our students are looking forward to the Bandaged Bear Picnic Day / Harmony Lunch on Friday. Please remember to pack a gold coin and a bear to share lunch with! The students will be eating lunch with their buddy classes.
Week 9 Learning Conversations
Thank you to all families who have booked a time to talk with your child’s teacher. I do hope that the choice of Zoom or face to face meetings has been helpful. I welcome your feedback on how we have set the meetings up this term. Our staff are looking forward to discussing where your child is with their learning and also what the next steps are in moving forward together.
This term we have embedded the Response to Intervention Learning Support model (RTI) to help frame the support the Learning Plus team provides in reading groups across all grades. The RTI model supports students with their learning in small groups within the classroom setting, small withdrawal groups and, most importantly, it supports classroom teachers to differentiate their instruction based on learner needs. Our support staff who used to only use the withdrawal model of groups to support learning, now work alongside the teachers in a classroom setting to take small groups both in and outside of the classroom. They also work with class teachers to assist them with programming support and in class instruction. I encourage you to talk to your teacher about this next week and to allow them to unpack this further with you.
Victoria Roberts is currently working towards establishing Extension Literacy Groups that will run in Term 2. Our conversations will turn to Extension Mathematics groups as we progress into next term. In the meantime, please be assured that your students are always being challenged and extended through open ended tasks and inquiry investigations that require higher order thinking skills.
I look forward to crossing paths with many parents next week as you enter the campus for your meetings, please drop in and say hello and email me directly if you would like a conversation with me.
Community Engagement
Last Friday Mrs Amy Richardson, Head of Junior Music, provided our Prep parents with a wonderful introduction and overview to all things Music in the Prep School. Head of Music K-12 Mr Darren Kuilenburg also spoke to our parents as did Nadine from the Friends of Music Group. If you missed the session and would like to hear it, please click here.
Any additional questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to email the Head of Junior Music, Mrs Amy Richardson.
Easter Hat Parade
This year the Prep School is not having an Easter Hat Parade. The decision was made based on the fact that we are already asking our students to participate in International Day by wearing clothes that reflect a country that they either come from or connect with in Week 10. Some teachers may make hats in their classrooms but there will not be a parade.
Clubs Weeks 9 and 10
Please note that due to Learning Conversations, there will be no Clubs next week except for Science Club. Science Club will run as per normal and pick up will be in the playground. There will be no Clubs in Week 10 either.
Prep Clubs are scheduled to begin in Week 2 of Term 2 for children in Yrs 1 and 2. Students who would like to attend are able to choose from a variety of options, running on Wednesdays from 3.00-3.45pm. If you would like your child to take part in Term 2, for which there is no additional cost (excluding the Science Club), please refer to the letter being emailed to families on Monday. Bookings can be made using the Trybooking system for internal Clubs and a booking link for Young Investigators Science Club, with all Club registrations opening simultaneously. Children are required to choose one club only for Term 2, beginning on Wednesday 28 April (Week 2) and finishing on Wednesday 9 June (Week 8). Please note that the after Clubs car line will run between 3.45-4.00pm and that the Science Club will run from 3.00-4.00pm with pick up from the playground.
For more information about the Young Investigators Science Club please click here.
Uniform
A reminder that students will be required to wear full winter uniform from the beginning of Term 2. Parents are now welcome to visit the Uniform Shop to purchase winter items or place an online order through Flexischools.
The Uniform Shop will be open on the following days during the holiday break: Wednesday 7 April, Thursday 15 April, Friday 16 April and Monday 19 April from 8.00am-4.00pm. Appointments can be made by clicking here.
From the Lucy Hill Library
We know many families have embarked on the reading pleasure afforded by the Premier’s Reading Challenge. It certainly is a wonderful literary opportunity to be part of.
It is now open online for you to record what you are reading. We have affixed a label to your child’s Student Planner with their username and password so that you can log on.
The Library staff are continuing to supply ten books to parents through the ‘library bag in the foyer’ routine so please email the Library if you want some PRC books in this way.
Please remember we will be celebrating Bandaged Bear Day tomorrow with the rest of the Junior Campus. Bandaged Bear Day raises money for Westmead Children’s Hospital. The children are encouraged to bring a gold coin donation and a teddy bear for a picnic. The Orange Class Seniors and Transition Gold will join their buddies class to enjoy a picnic on the Prep School Oval at 1.00pm. Junior classes will remain at Redlands House and have a picnic with their teddies in the playground.
April Vacation Care
If you would like your child to attend the April Vacation Care program, please visit the OOSH page on Redlands Pulse from Monday 8 March in order to preview all information pertaining to the holiday activity schedule and daily requirements. Flexischools will be open on Friday 12 March at 12.00pm to make any bookings. Please use the Redlands House Vacation Care icon for children in TG and Redlands House. Feel free to contact the Late Room Coordinator, Trishna Rai, with any Vacation Care or After School Care queries.
There will be a representative from ProFit Mouthguards at the school next week, Wednesday 24 March. ProFit Mouthguards are professionally fitted onsite using dental moulds and offer protection for teeth and gums whilst also reducing the severity of concussions caused by contact sports.
Mouthguards are recommended for the following Winter Representative Sports at Redlands: Hockey, Football, AFL and Rugby.

Football
The Football season is now underway. A reminder to all players and parents that there are Football trials this Saturday 20 March at Macquarie University Fields. The trial times for Saturday can be found on Redlands Pulse in the Redlands Rhino (Fixtures) button. Please make Redlands Pulse your first source of information for the Football season ahead.
Hockey
Congratulations to Freya Gait, Eloise Trueman and Jessica Van Extel who were selected into the 16&U ISA Hockey team earlier this week. Best of luck to all three Redlands girls when they compete in the NSWCIS Hockey Championships next Tuesday 23 March.
The Hockey season is now underway with trials for all age groups on Tuesdays, Thursdays and this Saturday 20 March. The details for the trials this Saturday can be found on Redlands Pulse under the “Redlands Rhino (Fixtures)” tab.
Rowing
Last weekend saw the Rowing program compete in both the NSW Boys Head of the River on Saturday and the NSW Girls Head of the River on Sunday in what are the Rowing Regatta equivalent to a Grand Final.
Our boys raced well with some strong representation across all crews with five individual crews finishing in a podium position and taking home a medal. The Senior Boys 1sts crew of Finn Woodward, Harley van der Pluijm, Alexander Verschoor, Alexander Holtheuer and cox Charlotte Morrison continued to close the gap to Radford finishing 2nd place in the Schoolboy Quad while the Yr 9 Boys 2nd crew of Julius Keller, Luca Solgaard, Mischa Barac, Tom Reeves and cox Scarlett Meijer also took out 2nd place. The Yr 10 Boys 2nd crew of Angus McLachlan, Ethan McFarlane, Loch Wilding, William Natilli and cox Jamie Gold started slowly in their final but hit the lead in the final 500m, going stroke for stroke with Radford but ultimately being pipped at the post and finishing in 2nd place by only 0.14 of a second to Radford.
The Yr 10 Boys 1st crew of Samuel Chubb, Daniel Close, Matthew Fry, Patrick Walker and cox Sebastian Tang finished strong with an incredible last 500m surge to the finish line forcing their way through the field and winning bronze in the process. Lachlan Collyer was particularly nervous before heading out to race as the Redlands Yr 9 Single Sculler, however he held his form and raced consistently from start to finish to also win a bronze medal.
Special mention should also go to both the Yr 8 Boys 1st and 2nd crews along with the Yr 9 3rd crew (made up of a combo of Yr 8 and 9 boys) who all finished in 4th place, only narrowly missing out on podium positions.
The girls took on the larger single sex programs with gusto and represented themselves well across the whole program. Particular highlights included the Yr 10 Girls 2nd crew of Charlotte Scamps, Alana Mansfield, Yazi Coletran, Phoebe Cunningham and cox Hannah Mitchell working their way through the field to finish in 1st place in what was a very disciplined and controlled race by the girls. The Yr 10 Girls 1st crew of Catarina Croll, Briar Carter, Georgia Verschoor, Trinity Hoffman and cox Zoe Naismith also saw off some strong challenges to win bronze in Division 1.
Other strong performances by the girls included the Yr 8 4th crew finishing in 4th place along with the Senior Girls 1st crew also finishing in 4th place in the Schoolgirls Quad division 1. The Yr 8 Girls 1st crew also raced well to win the B Final of Yr 8 Division 1.
With the majority of the Rowing program having concluded the season, the Senior Boys 1st crew having hit some internal qualification targets earlier this season will have the opportunity to continue through to the Australian Rowing Championships held in Tasmania from 22-28 March. This campaign will see Alex Holtheuer and Alex Verschoor race in the Men’s Under 19 Double Scull along with teaming up with some boys from Radford to race the Men’s Under 19 Coxless Quad. Finn Woodward will race in the Men’s Under 17 Single, Double and Quad Scull via Sydney Rowing Club before joining the rest of the crew including Harley van der Pluijm and Charlotte Morrison to race in School Boy Quad Scull. Arriving just in time for this campaign, we have taken possession of a new boys quad and a double scull which will go at lengths to assist the combinations race.
Touch Football
We had some mixed results at the Touch Football finals on Saturday, with four teams featuring across the day.
Our Junior E team had a tough first hit out in their final against Chevalier College. Despite showing some great signs early, Chevalier were too strong taking the match 5-1.
Next up we had our Jnr A and 1st VI in their respective Semi Finals. The Jnr A team came up against Scots All Saints who the week before had taken the close encounter 2-1. The Redlands team came out firing and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Scots fought back, but some enterprising play from the Redlands girls saw them come away with a resounding 7-1 victory to move into the finals later in the day. Our 1sts had a tough encounter against BMGS but the girls went down early letting in two tries to be down 2-0 at half time. They fought back in the 2nd half and managed to claw back the lead scoring the equalling try with just over five minutes to go, holding on to a 2-2 draw and progressing to the final as the highest seed.
With Term 4 being a struggle in a higher division, the Senior 3rds girls learned a lot throughout that season for this Term 1 season. The girls took a strong 2-0 lead into the break, but the heat got to them, allowing KWS back into the match to make it 2-2 at the full time hooter. This meant extra time and drop off touch (every 2 minutes a player from each team drops from the field) until it was 3 on 3. Some slick footwork through the middle of the field drew the KWS defenders in leaving space out wide for the Redlands winger to fire down the sideline scoring the match winning try in the corner!
The finals for the Jnr A and 1sts was a battle of attrition. In the blistering heat, the girls toughed it out against SPGS and Barker College respectively, unfortunately both games going against the mighty Rhinos.
Redlands was awarded the Schools Championship Shield for Touch Football which is a fantastic achievement and shows the strength that is within the program.
A huge thank you to all the coaches for another great season, we are hoping you are all eager to return to Touch Football next year!

Tennis
Last weekend was the finals for the Summer NSTA competition. We had a number of teams in the final. Team 3 and Team 8 were successful in winning their final. Teams 4, 11, 12, 17, 24 and 26 played extremely well and walked away with the Runner Up medals. A huge congratulations to all teams on their attitude, effort and commitment throughout the summer season.
Winter Tennis started this week. Specific information surrounding trials and training has been communicated directly to Tennis families. All wet weather updates can be found on Twitter.
“The key to being happy is knowing you have the power to choose what to accept and what to let go”. Dodinsky
Good luck to all our teams in their final round of Summer Sport for Term 1. The remaining 6 rounds of the season will recommence in Term 4. Thank you to all students for their efforts this season with their summer sport.
Basketball and Touch Singlet Return
With this weekend being the last game for the season, we need to have all Basketball jerseys that were loaned/hired from the Sports Department returned to us after the game. They will be collected by the coach so please ensure they have another top to change into.
If you own your Basketball jersey, please disregard this reminder. If you are unsure, please check next to your child’s name on the Team Lists, (O) indicates owned. Term 1 Team Lists
If you already know your child will not be attending their Basketball game this weekend, please organise return of the jersey to school as soon as possible. They can be dropped at Junior Reception or brought to the Sports Office, washed or unwashed.
Please note that if your Basketball jersey is not returned this Saturday, you will be charged a replacement cost to your account. We thank you for your cooperation in this process and hope your child has had an enjoyable Basketball season.
Morning Skills Sessions
Reminders as per calendar and on Redlands Pulse this is the last week of morning skills sessions for Basketball, Touch Football, Football and Goal Keeper training. Thank you to all those students who have attended these sessions over the last nine weeks. Please refer to the Winter Training Schedule for what sports are on offer commencing Term 2.
CIS Sport
A special mention to our three footballers Emme Tainton, Katie Jennings and Maya Turton from our Yr 6A Girls Football side who were nominated two weeks ago to attend the CIS Football trials based on their performance this season. Mr Gomez, who looks after our Football program, speaks highly of all three girls both as footballers but also ambassadors when they represent Redlands when they play on Saturday.
Winter Season and Compulsory Rep Sport Trials
Week 9 will see us transition into preparation for our Winter Sport Rep and Non-Rep Sport program. This commences Wednesday 24 March. All students who have elected to participate in a Rep Winter Sport (Mixed Football, Netball, Hockey, Rugby) are required to attend Sport trials on Saturday 27 March held on site at various times. This will be the only time prior to the commencement of the season that we can allocate your child to a Rep team. If your child has chosen a Non-Rep Sport, they will commence this on Wednesday 24 March. There is no Wednesday sport for rep or non rep sport on 31 March due to the Athletics Carnival.
Please click here to view what sport your child has signed up for their Winter Season (Term 2 and 3 Season). Winter Sport Selections Link
Please select the following link to view the Winter Sport trials timetable for Saturday 27 March (second tab).
For more Winter Sport information please refer to Redlands Pulse
Cross Country Training
Optional training sessions commence this week, Friday 19 March on the Junior Campus Oval at 7.00am. Access to the school will be through the oval gate (49 Murdoch St) from 6.45am. Whilst optional, students in Yrs 3-6 are encouraged to attend if they do not already have a pre-existing commitment at the same time. Coach Hunter will be running the program and will cover a variety of fitness and exercise programs in preparation for both our Winter season but also our Cross Country Carnival next term.
Athletics Carnival Program
The program for the Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 31 March is now available here. Please note the 1500m event is an open event but I would suggest only those students who can comfortably handle that distance along with their other events they may be running on the day should run in this event.
All other track events, as well as discus and turbo javelin, can be entered by students on the day.
Cross Country Carnival Preparation
A reminder that an information pack was emailed to all families last week outlining the selection criteria for our carnival in Term 2. Please familiarise yourselves with this information and how the two courses on Cross Country are split.

Filming for Greasethe Musical the Movie continued last weekend with our amazing “Greased Lightning” car arriving at our Redlands set. The cast were literally head over heels with their excitement.
This weekend we will film Act Two. We will be without our much loved cast member “Eugene” (played by Yr 10 student, Sebastian Tang) who will be flying interstate to commence three months of filming for a new ongoing ABC television series. We were able to film all Sebastian’s scenes before he left to commence filming in the lead role of this forthcoming series. This is a very exciting opportunity for Sebastian to further his acting career and we wish him all the very best. You will be able to see “Eugene” and all our cast and crew shortly once filming and editing are complete.
Theatresports
Redlands Drama and Theatre will be holding our Theatresports competition on Wednesday 24 March at 5.30pm in the Fahl Garden. We are excited to be welcoming parents back to enjoy our talented improvisers as they compete for the Redlands Cup and a place in the Regional Theatresports Finals. The wet weather venue will be Redlands Hall and numbers are limited. Bookings for the event can be made here. Don’t miss out!
What an absolutely wonderful evening last Saturday night as Secondary School students and staff hosted Jazz In The Garden in association with the Friends of Music. This annual launch event for the Music Department followed a 15 month hiatus, as the last live performance by Redlands students dates back to the Annual Prize Giving and Awards Night in December 2019.
It was clear from the energy within the Edwards Auditorium that the Redlands Music community was thrilled to be back listening to live music by Redlands students. Family and friends were so excited to be invited as guests on campus and listen to the performers play their instruments with such finesse and sing so expressively as ensembles from the Redlands Jazz program presented a rich and diverse range of popular Jazz standards. This selection of repertoire was interspersed with recordings from the 2019 and 2020 Redlands EP Project, a new initiative for young composers that was featured as part of this event.
Throughout the concert program, our Student Leaders hosted this evening of live music with such eloquence and poise. Thanks are extended to Piper Allen and Theo Mirlees-Black (School Captains), Maddison Hunt and Felix Abrahams (Arts Captains) and Beatrix Blasco, Alex Kim, Lucy McLaren and Bethany Richardson (Music Captains), and a special thank you to Joshua Colleran for his technological skills in filming and editing the pre-recorded Captains who welcomed guests and introduced the performers.
For those who were able to join us in this live setting, it was clear that our Redlands musicians loved being back on the stage and it was wonderful to see their faces come alive as they shared their musical talents in front of a live audience; something they have truly missed over many months.
In sharing the feedback received from staff, Redlands Alumni and the wider School community, it was clear that our audiences appreciated the excellent standard of ensemble performance skills by the students and were impressed by the overall professionalism of the combined live and streamed concert. A credit to everyone involved onstage, off stage and behind the scenes.
A big thank you to our conductors and accompanists for bringing together a diverse range of repertoire in a very short time frame and for managing rehearsals. We are very fortunate to have such exceptional music specialists at the helm of these ensembles. In leading the Jazz Bands, it is wonderful to be working in association with our new Head of Bands, Joseph Montz, as he was able to share his expertise at this event in developing students’ music ensemble skills and stagecraft.
Particular thanks are extended to Ben Peate and Pete Atkins, who were instrumental in facilitating and operating audio, lighting, vision and all the logistical challenges aspects in coordinating both a live and streamed event simultaneously.
The quality of the original compositions, reflecting student contributions as part of the Redlands EP Projects 2019 and 2020, was exceptional. Thanks to our sound engineer Pete Atkins for his management of all these recordings.
As always the combined efforts of Music Administration working in the background in preparing communications, signage and management of guests, never goes unnoticed. Thanks to Amy, Jacqueline and Pip. The safe management of parents in and out of the auditorium was handled efficiently and in an organised manner, in line with our COVID plan.
Special thanks to Friends of Music President, Mrs Emma McLaren, for her oversight of the Trybooking system, door lists and seating plans, along with the organisation of teams of parents to assist with ushering and seating.
We look forward to welcoming our next audience to the live event for Battle of the Bands on Monday 29 March.

School hired instruments must be included on personal home and contents insurance as Redlands cannot be held responsible for instruments which are lost, stolen or damaged. As all instruments are very fragile, we ask for your assistance in ensuring that students do not let other children play with their instrument, instruments are kept in a safe place and out of extreme temperatures (ie. hot car) and are not left out of their case when not in use.
