Year 8

ISA Athletics

On Tuesday our Redlands Athletics Team competed at the ISA Athletics Carnival out at Sydney Olympic Park.

Yr 8 participants included: Zaira McHutchison, Robbie Smith, Ava Atkinson, Isla Anderson, Daniel Benoliel, Liv Law, Finn Gurney, Amelie Dewar, Liliana Halfen, Milla McKim and Hugo Burton.

There were many notable performances from all Year Groups. Some of the top Year 8 performances included:

  • Ava Atkinsons – 1st place 14 years girls High Jump 1.40m, 1st place Div 1 B 200m – 29.44s
  • Daniel Benoliel – 1st place, 14 years boys long jump, 5.03m, 2nd place 14 years Div 1 B 200m 25.69s, 3rd place 14 years high jump – 1.55m
  • Eva Simpson – 2nd place Div 1 shotput 13 years 8.16, 3rd place 13 years girls Javelin, 2nd place 13 years girls Discus – 18.54m
  • Amelie Dewar – 1st place 14 years Shotput – 8.32m. 2nd place Div 1 A 14 years girls 100m 14.32
  • Olivia Law – 1st place 13 Years girls 800m 2:21s, 1st place 12 – 14 years 1500m 5:02.46s

A number of these students will further go on to represent Redlands at the CIS level.

House Debating Finals

During Tutor time today the Year 8 cohort assembled to watch the House Debating final. The topic ‘That Australia Day should not be on January 26’ was furiously debated between the representatives of MacDoull and Dumolo.

These representative were:

  • McDoull – Zaira McHutchison, Alexander Heller, Bowen Shiao and Liam Donnelly
  • Dumolo – Soraya Christian-Hare, Sophia Liu, George Dover, Patrick Sun, Merrick Schmidt, Belle Monty, India Dutton

Both groups raised arguments about the importance we place on significant dates in history and how our perspective on the celebration of Australia day have (and continue to need to) evolve over time.

Ultimately, the Year 11 adjudicators, Ahnu Guan and Jack Petering awarded the affirmative team, Dumolo, the debate.

The level of reasoned argument and public speaking skill on diaplyt throughout the entire House Debating season this year has been exceptional, and we congratulate all those who have participated in their efforts.
