Issue 28 2023 Term 3 Week 9 - 14 Sep 2023

From the Principal

When asking students about what they love most about Redlands, one of their most common answers is the many and varied opportunities they have to shine at our School. This penultimate week of Term 3 has certainly highlighted these many and varied opportunities.

On Monday, I was present for the introduction to the Prep School Camp Week and have loved popping into various activities over the course of the week and seeing the students fully engage in their “survivor” activities. On Tuesday, I spent time at SOPAC cheering on our Secondary School athletes as they competed in the ISA Athletics Carnival; it was wonderful to see and hear the support of their peers in the stands as our students achieved 60 podium places. Congratulations to all athletes and especially to our girls’ team who placed 2nd overall and to the 21 students who qualified for the Combined Independent Schools Championships next week.

On Wednesday the Year 9 Commerce Intrapreneurship Program concluded when students gave their final pitches to their industry specialists and guests, and also enjoyed a Celebration of their Learning Lunch on the Fahl Garden, catered for by Plate It Forward. Yesterday evening, we also had the opening of our Year 12 IB Visual Arts exhibition, and it was impressive to hear the students reflect so deeply on their installations.

Today at lunchtime Secondary School students enjoyed the House Spirit Fair run by our Year 12 students to raise money for their Legacy Gift. There was much mirth and merriment as students got involved in the various games, activities and events across the Senior Campus.

And finally, students and staff across both the Junior and Senior Campuses today were wearing a splash of yellow in support of R U OK Day as reminder to check in on each other’s mental health and wellbeing not just today but every day.

A special thank you to all of the staff who work tirelessly to provide these opportunities for our students, not just this week, but throughout the year at Redlands.

Last Friday was a special day as our outgoing Secondary School student leaders introduced our incoming leaders to the school community. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the student leaders from the Class of 2023 and by extension, the leadership displayed by the entire Year Group this year. Their authenticity, vulnerability and active engagement in the School has left a remarkable legacy for future Year Groups to learn from and aspire to.

We are pleased to the announce the appointment of Ben Castelli to the Executive role of Director of Learning and Growth, commencing in Term 4 2023, replacing Matt Bentley who leaves us as the Head of Teaching and Learning (P-12) at the end of this term. Since commencing in 2020, Matt Bentley has made significant contributions to the teaching and learning space at Redlands including leading the refresh of the Redlands Learning Platform, revamping the professional learning program across the campuses and successfully navigating the academic areas of the School through the challenges and disruptions caused by the pandemic. He has also been a valued teacher in the English Department.

Ben Castelli joined Redlands in 2012 and over the past 12 years, has made significant contributions to the academic, pastoral and cocurricular areas of the School. In addition to his role as a Music teacher during his time at Redlands, Ben has also held leadership positions as Head of House, Assistant Head of Music, Year Advisor, Dean of Academic Administration and most recently, Head of Learning Analytics P-12 where he has led the development of our iGrow data analytics platform. We look forward to Ben’s strategic leadership of the academic program, as well as staff and student growth and development at Redlands.

The following article from our Deputy Principal, Ms Sabine Partington, introduces our Redlands Student Wellbeing Framework, which has been developed by our Pastoral teams to support the holistic development of our students.

Mr Sean Corcoran

From the Deputy Principal

Redlands Student Wellbeing Framework

At Redlands, we believe in the holistic development of our students, ensuring that their emotional and social growth is nurtured alongside their academic performance. To this end, we are continuously reviewing and updating our Pastoral Care and Wellbeing programs to better serve our students.

In 2022, a significant focus was placed on embedding Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into our P-12 Student Wellbeing programs. This initiative was led by our Dean of Students (7-12), Marita Jansons and Dean of Students (P-6), Katie-Louise Clinton, who conducted extensive research during their Redlands Innovative Teaching Fellowship trip to the United States. The insights and experiences gained have enabled us to refine our approach to SEL, ensuring an alignment with the specific needs of our diverse student community.

This year, our efforts have been directed towards designing a developmental continuum that underpins our P-12 Student Wellbeing programs. Our Redlands Student Wellbeing Framework provides a clear roadmap with specific outcomes for each stage of your child’s development, addressing the five key areas of SEL: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision-Making.

As parents and carers, your support and engagement in your child’s wellbeing journey are invaluable. We share this important document with the intention that it will provide you with guidance around where we anticipate your child to sit developmentally across the five key areas of SEL. It is important to remember that children develop at different rates and that while this is a useful reference, it is not to be used prescriptively or in isolation.

We firmly believe that a strong foundation in SEL is essential to nurturing young people towards “life-readiness”, empowering them to navigate challenges and embrace opportunities with resilience and empathy.

For details on the specific programs we have in place for your child’s individual age and stage, please do not hesitate to contact Katie-Louise Clinton, Dean of Students (P-6), or Marita Jansons, Dean of Students (7-12).

Community Update

Our alumni of Redlanders can be found locally and globally and we continue to ensure important alumni connections with our community are nurtured and developed through Redlands dedicated alumni engagement program that includes interstate and international reunions and networking opportunities and events. We value the relationships we have with our alumni and our aim is to support a lifelong connection to the School.

We are delighted to announce that later this year we will host the Redlander Alumni Awards in partnership with the Redlander Alumni Association. This will be the second year of these prestigious awards following the launch of this new initiative last year. These Awards recognise and celebrate significant local and global achievements of the Redlander alumni community over many years, and across a number of fields of endeavour. For more information on these awards, along with an update on scholarships and other community events, please visit the Foundation section of today’s Note Day.

A reminder that we will be hosting an information evening on the Redlands Parent and Carer Midawarr Arnhem Land Trip at 6.30pm this evening on Level 2 of the Learning Hub, Senior Campus in LH 2.7/2.8. Those parents who are unable to attend in person can view the presentation via the live link here. To whet your appetite on what you might experience on this once in a lifetime trip, click here to watch a video of our 2023 Yr 9 cohort and their teachers immerse themselves in this ancient culture. The information session will provide more detailed information on this truly unique experience scheduled for May 2024 and offered exclusively to the Redlands community. This is quite literally a once in a lifetime opportunity to deeply explore miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival. To reserve a place at our information evening please click here.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Final Student-Led Assemblies for Class of 2023 Student Leaders

This week School Captains Josie and Dan, and the entire Student Leadership Team, including our House Captains, led two wonderful assemblies for Yrs 10-12 and then Yrs 7-9. These were excellent assemblies which landed well with students and staff, striking just the right tone for the final weeks of the term.

The Student Leaders bestowed their final Fall Forward Awards to those deserving of recognition for growth, learning from failure or simply an incredible achievement.

For the first part of the Awards Ceremony the Yr 12 students bestowed Fall Fall Awards to their most valued staff members. There were lots of cheers for the following members of our School community.

The Caffeine Queen: Usa, Canteen Barista

An individual without whom the sleep deprived Yr 12s would not survive… Not only for providing much needed caffeine but for her daily words of kindness and her contagious smile!

Deans of HSC and IB: Ms Benjamin and Mr Taylor

The next awards go to Redlands’ two favourite Brits. You might know them as the Delightful Deans, the Diploma-giving Duo, the superstars with the ATARS, the sparks with the marks or the jurisdictions with the predictions – Ms Benjamin and Mr Taylor! From her emotional support chocolates to his endless suit combinations, this pair have gone above and beyond for their students in Yr 11 and Yr 12!

Fall Forward Award for the Queen of Managing Behind the Scenes: Secondary School Office Manager, Ms Susan Jones

The queen of behind the scenes who probably also wins the Fall Forward award for most emails sent. She constantly works hard behind the scenes down at the Student Services Centre organising meetings, events and everything in between! She also helped us create and order the Fall Forward badges.

Fall Forward Award for the Most Iconic Duo: Mr Walker and Ms Martin

This award goes to the dynamic duo who have heroically put up with our Yr 12 cohort through various ups and downs of our high school journey, been consistent franchisers of the Fall Forward brand and never fail to embarrass Yr 12 with the many formal and gala photos displayed on Level 4 of the Learning Hub for everyone to see.

A Fall Forward Badge for the King of Badges: Mr Tod-Hill

The teacher who courageously led Yr 7 through their first year of high school, with his unwavering commitment to not only his Year Group but also his many English classes. He rocks a different badge on his blazers everyday and we hope we see the Fall Forward badge make an appearance.

The Fall Forward Award for Helping People When They Literally Fall Forward: School Nurse, Emar Macken

Let’s just say that this amazing staff member doesn’t need any Irish luck to win this award. She’s always there for us when we take Fall Forward a little too seriously and take a tumble, or we’re feeling sick or sometimes just in need of rest. She’s been here for us ever since us Yr 12s started in Yr 7, and has been a calming, warm presence ever since.

The King of Behind the Scenes/King of AV: Mr Ben Peate

This individual works behind the scenes of every assembly and pretty much all events! We are so grateful for his expertise with Audio Visual – making every assembly possible, ensuring we sound pitch perfect and setting up the screens so that we can show you all videos and do Just Dance with you!

Fall Forward Award for the Canteen King: Mr Joel Squire

This award goes to the staff member who keeps everyone fed in the School community. Need a chocolate stand? Need a sausage sizzle? This next recipient really puts the Flexi in our School… we thank him kindly.

A Message about 7-10 Yearly Examinations in Term 4

As we continue to navigate the challenges of the academic year, we understand the importance of striking a balance between learning and taking well-deserved breaks. The holidays should be a time for students to relax, refresh, and reset. It is an opportunity for them to spend quality time with family and friends, engage in their favourite activities, and recharge for Term 4.

Next term, the Yr 7 & 10 Yearly Exams will take place in Week 3 and the Years 8 & 9 Yearly Exams will take place in Week 4. While we encourage students to enjoy their well-deserved break, we understand that some may wish to engage in some light revision to stay prepared.  All examination notifications will be published before the end of this term and each subject provides a study guide as part of these notifications. These study guides are designed to offer students a structured approach to engaging in revision.

However, please remember that this is entirely optional. There is no pressure for students to spend the entire holiday period studying intensively. The goal is to strike a balance that works best for each student, ensuring they return to school feeling refreshed and energised for Term 4. For those families planning to go away during the holidays, we hope that this time will provide much-needed rest and recreation so students can come back to school with renewed energy and enthusiasm.

Should you have any questions or require additional information regarding the study guides or any other matter, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Dean of Studies (7-10) or the Subject Coordinators who are here to support you and your child in their academic journey.

Yr 11 HSC subject selections

Post their Preliminary Examinations, Yr 11 HSC are now finalising their Yr 12 subject selections. A link has already been sent to students and this should be completed by Tuesday 19 September at 9am. Mrs Benjamin spoke with Yr 11 prior to the examination block about the process and students were invited to book a meeting with her should they have any queries. If students have any questions, they are still welcome to meet with Mrs Benjamin, or send her an email.

Yr 12 HSC and IB Examinations and Holiday Workshops

Examination timetables and key information has been sent home for the upcoming HSC and IB Examinations. Please read through these documents carefully and reach out to the relevant Dean with any questions. There are a number of Holiday Workshops available for our Yr 12 students and information about these is available on the Core HSC and IB iLearn pages, as well as the Yr 12 Pastoral page. We encourage Yr 12 to have study schedules in place and remind them that consistency is key over the next few weeks. We are proud of how Yr 12 are working and engaging with their Deans to understand better what to focus on between now and the final exams. If students need any further support as we move closer to the exams starting, please reach out to Mrs Benjamin or Mr Taylor.

Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition

The Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition is in Redlands Hall this week. Students submit for assessment a selection of resolved artworks to exhibit. We all know that uttering ‘how are you?” as you fly past someone in the hallway is often well meaning but many times does not allow opportunity to stop and hear the answer.

Today is RUOK? Day. An idea developed from the need to build our communities and to start helpful conversations that allow us to respond with authenticity and honesty. This year the tag line is “I am here to hear” At Redlands we are keen to give our students plenty of opportunities to check in with each other and their families and build skill in being excellent listeners.

Jesus was ahead of the times when he calls us to give him our burdens. He promoted a community where honest and rich connections are made. He calls us to love others with a deep active and accepting love.

Across the School, in our classes and in Chapel, our students have been given opportunities to ask RUOK? and to give time ‘listening ears’ in response. As a community let us encourage each other to be shining lights at school and beyond by being ‘here to hear’.

Year 12

Last Week Of School Memories

Week 9 kicked off with a wholesome final Student Leaders Assembly, marking a special moment for Yr 12. It was an honor to bear witness to the House Captains and Portfolio of Captains as they presented to Yr 10 and 11, bidding farewell in a truly exceptional fashion. Yr 12 has truly been fortunate to have our senior leadership team by their side, providing exceptional support and guidance throughout the past year.  It was a delight to see the Yr 12 countdown banner proudly displayed on the balcony in the quad, serving as a constant reminder of the excitement building with just 6 days left to go! In addition to this heartfelt assembly, on Wednesday, the Cocurricular Breakfast took place, to which all the Captains of Activities were invited to celebrate their last 12 months in their specific activity. Yr 12 also participated in the Staff Vs Yr 12 Great Debate. Congratulations to Lucy Horton, Sabrina Blasco, Claudia Lalich, Dan Close and Sebastian Tang for their stunning victory over the teachers, taking the negative on ‘children should be like their parents’.

Today, it was so pleasing to see a display of camaraderie emerge as the entire Yr 12 cohort assembled for their final gathering, united in their mission to spearhead House Spirit Activities, all in the noble pursuit of raising funds for the Class of 2023 Legacy Gift. The day was filled with a diverse array of engaging activities, including a captivating photo guessing competition, an enticing lolly jar challenge, and numerous other exciting endeavors. It was a testament to the unity and dedication of Yr 12 that every single student actively participated in this event, leaving no one behind. Yr 12 also enjoyed dressing up as their favourite childhood memory for the day.

Yr 12 Leaders

This year, our brave, forward-thinking, driven and motivated cohort put themselves forward for several leadership positions, reaching the highest amount of students to self-nominate for a leadership position in Redlands history. This demonstrates the desire and leadership mindset this cohort has across each student. While Friday marked a day full of emotion as the new Yr 12 Captains were announced, we congratulate every student for the courage to self-nominate, the self-reflection and self-regulation throughout the leadership nomination process and the resilience for stepping up as a leader with or without an additional title.

Well done to all students for learning more about themselves throughout this process, for supporting friends through moments of excitement and disappointment and for moving forward with another life skill that will continue to support them into their future.

Congratulation class of 2024! It is your time to shine!

Yr 11 Camp Letter

Please note that a parent letter was sent to all students and parents/carers last week regarding Yr 11 Camp. Parents will have received information regarding providing permission, access to the OEG website to check packing lists and to submit medical forms. Thank you for your timely attention to this information. The camp letter can be found on Pulse.

Yr 11 Industry Day

All students were provided information regarding their Industry Day selection last week. This Friday, students will be provided time in Tutor to connect with their peers going to the same industry. Students are reminded of the following:

  • This is not an optional event. All students are required to attend to embrace this opportunity provided to them.
  • If students are absent on the day, they will need to send an email to their supervising teacher and include SSAbsence and Careers in the email.  A doctor certificate will also be required for the absence.
  • Professional dress is required for the day – no jeans, tops exposing midriffs or sneakers. Students do not need to wear a suit. Flat shoes are recommended. Special clothing request for John Holland. Please check the Partner letters carefully.
  •  It is the student’s responsibility to make their own way to and home from the industry. CMRI and ResMed are exceptions and have a mini-bus from school and back.
  • Teachers will be with students at the industry visit. Students should ensure they know which teacher they are meeting.
  • These industries have spent a lot of time putting together a special opportunity for our students. Students are asked to ensure they are on time and engage politely and positively throughout the day, demonstrating appreciation for this experience.

Thank you for your support reiterating these expectations from home.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Problem Solvers: Year 9 Commerce Intrapreneurship Program Celebration of Learning event

Mrs Elizabeth Green: Innovation & Entrepreneurial Learning Strategist

Yesterday, we marked a momentous occasion at Redlands as we celebrated the remarkable achievements of our Year 9 Commerce students. The event was a culmination of dedication, creativity, and collaborative effort, bringing together our students, executive members, Year 9 Commerce staff, and esteemed industry partners. At the heart of the Commerce program is the opportunity for students to work in teams on a real-world challenge provided by one of our partner organisations and yesterday each student team had the opportunity to pitch their prototyped solution to the founder, CEO of decision maker of the business or organisation they were assigned.

Our student teams sat with the challenge for 9 weeks as their teachers guided them through the process of user research, ideation, prototyping and finally preparing a pitch. The challenges posed to our students were not simple; they ranged from addressing issues like “How might we prevent obesity across generations?” to “How might we avoid discarding uneaten food?” These complex, evergreen problems were deliberately chosen to stretch our students’ critical thinking abilities and inspire them to seek sustainable solutions.

As educators, we entered this program with several key learning intentions in mind. Firstly, we aimed to introduce students to a real-world methodology that they are likely to encounter as they step into the workforce. Additionally, in increasingly changed future of work landscape we recognise the importance of developing collaboration skills. By working together on group projects, our students practiced navigating the challenges and nuances of teamwork in a supported environment. Not only do many NSW curriculums, including Commerce, mandate that students engage in group projects, we do so to provide high support environments for students to have a go at executing a group project. In this unit, we introduced students to a ‘sorting system’ whereby each team ranked the level of difficulty and skill within individual tasks to achieve parity when assigning different components of the pitch and prototype creation. Beyond technical knowledge and collaboration, the Year 9 Commerce program also nurtured core competencies essential for personal and professional growth. Our students gained the creative confidence to transform their ideas into tangible solutions. They actively sought and acted upon feedback, honing their ability to iterate and improve. They developed problem-solving skills rooted in empathy, understanding the needs of various stakeholders, and proposing solutions that address those needs. Equally important, they learned to face setbacks with optimism, recognizing that challenges are opportunities for growth and innovation.

During the celebration, we had the privilege of enjoying a delicious lunch provided by one of our partners, Plate It Forward. Our meal came from Kabul Social, a restaurant with a mission to make a difference. For every meal purchased, one goes to a family in need in Sydney, and another to a family in Afghanistan. This act of kindness and generosity added a meaningful dimension to our event, reminding us of the global impact we can have through our actions. We want to express our deepest gratitude to our partners who have supported us throughout this program journey. They generously entrusted our students with real-world problems, allowing them to conduct interviews and gather insights. Moreover, their presence during the pitch presentations was instrumental in creating a bridge between theory and practice, demonstrating their commitment to nurturing the next generation of thinkers and innovators.

Today, the school’s House Captains and a variety of other supporting students and staff coordinated an array of fun and ‘spirit’ filled events for the annual House Spirit Fair. It was a wonderful lunchtime in the sun, offering a time for students to relax, have a bit of fun and enjoy being themselves. Whether they were eating a sausage sizzle, playing dodgeball, ‘Just Dancing’ or relaxing with friends, it looked like Yr 9 students had a really great time; and, all the money raised from the fair is going to a great cause, raising funds for the Yr 12 Legacy Gift.

House Debating Finals

During Tutor time today the Year 8 cohort assembled to watch the House Debating final. The topic ‘That Australia Day should not be on January 26’ was furiously debated between the representatives of MacDoull and Dumolo.

These representative were:

  • McDoull – Zaira McHutchison, Alexander Heller, Bowen Shiao and Liam Donnelly
  • Dumolo – Soraya Christian-Hare, Sophia Liu, George Dover, Patrick Sun, Merrick Schmidt, Belle Monty, India Dutton

Both groups raised arguments about the importance we place on significant dates in history and how our perspective on the celebration of Australia day have (and continue to need to) evolve over time.

Ultimately, the Year 11 adjudicators, Ahnu Guan and Jack Petering awarded the affirmative team, Dumolo, the debate.

The level of reasoned argument and public speaking skill on diaplyt throughout the entire House Debating season this year has been exceptional, and we congratulate all those who have participated in their efforts.

Year 7

Welcoming in our New Leaders

Last Friday, the school announced its Senior Student leadership team for the year. While the Yr 11 leaders are, in some ways, a world apart from our Yr 7s, many of them are also tightly linked due to their experiences supporting the cohort through the Peer Support program in the first half of the year. Thus, it was great to see many of our Yr 7s come out to Liggins Quad at lunch to watch (and celebrate) the announcement of our new school leaders. Perhaps some of them were thinking that one day it might be their names being called out to lead Redlands into the future.

A Final Student Leaders Assembly

On Monday, we enjoyed a final Student Leaders’ assembly for Yrs 7-9, where the focus was presenting a recap of the year and celebrating of student achievement. A variety of Fall Forward awards were presented to students for their efforts and involvement this year, including a McDouall award to Grace, an Arts award to Leo and Josh, and a Service award to Oscar and Harriet. Congratulations to them all! There was even a brief section where some staff were recognised with Fall Forward awards, including one to this very chuffed Year Advisor.

Our Student Leaders have been wonderful figures of compassion, care and enthusiasm this year, really modelling the Redlands spirit to our Yr 7s. We wish them all the best for their future endeavours and look forward to seeing our new Student Leaders take the reins to lead Redlands into the future of 2024!

Juggling with McDouall Blue

After a successful first juggling session with Dumolo Blue last week, this week McDouall Green decided to give it a shot, and used their ‘Fun Friday’ Tutor time to learn how to juggle. There was certainly a mixture of success but, again, everyone had fun giving it a go. A big congratulations to Johnny who picked up the skill very quickly and was pretty close to comfortably juggling by the end!

I Sprint Athletically – ISA Carnival

On Tuesday, a collection of Redlands students attended the 2023 ISA Carnival. A large contingent of Yr 7 students were involved in the carnival, with some of them achieving some impressive results. House Debating Finals – McDouall and Roseby

They say that for good ideas and true innovation, you need human interaction, conflict, argument and debate. We have certainly been treated to some excellent, thoughtful debating over the past couple of weeks in the Yr 7 House Debating competition. On Wednesday, we had the finals of the competition, with Roseby affirming the proposition that hunting in Australia should be banned except for those living in indigenous communities, against McDouall negating it.

We were able to gather the entire Yr 7 cohort together to watch the debate in the Learning Hub, and students were focused and supportive of their peers debating. In the end, the adjudicators awarded the victory to McDouall. Congratulations to the team for their success over the competition!

House Spirit Fair

Today, the School’s House Captains and a variety of other supporting students and staff coordinated an array of fun and spirit filled events for the annual House Spirit Fair. It was a wonderful moment, offering a time for students to relax, have a bit of fun and enjoy being themselves. Whether they were eating a sausage sizzle, playing dodgeball or relaxing with a zuper-duper, it looked like Yr 7 students had a really great time; and,all the money raised from the fair is going to a great cause, raising funds for the Yr 12 legacy gift.

UN Voice Competition

In Term 4, Redlands students have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming UN Youth Voice, which is an annual public speaking competition for students in Yrs 7-10. Voice provides delegates with the opportunity to present innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

Ethics Olympiad

This week, Redlands again entered two teams in this year’s National Ethics Olympiad, an online virtual competition in which we achieved national honours last year.

The Ethics Olympiad provides schools and universities with a unique opportunity to develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration and communication. It is designed to get students thinking, talking and ultimately working together on some of the tough moral issues of our time. The objective is to do more than just help them think through ethical issues; it is to teach students how to think through ethical issues together, as fellow citizens in a complex moral and political community.

In a day of competition, we were delighted to achieve 7th place from a field of 26 schools in Yr 5 and 13th from a field of 26 schools in Yr 6. The Yr 5 team was given an honourable mention by the team of judges and our student ‘eth-letes’ showed great commitment and collaboration throughout the day, guided by Mr Watkins.

Staffing News

After 14½ years at Redlands, Mrs Briony Hibbert leaves us at the end of this term to take up a similar role at Wenona School. Mrs Hibbert was one of my first appointments in 2009 as a classroom teacher and after maternity leave, returned in the role of enrichment teacher where she has added significant value to this area of our Learning Plus team. We thank her for her dedication and contributions to our School and wish her all the very best. For Term 4, we have appointed Ms Grace Kennedy to teach Mrs Hibbert’s groups and Ms Kennedy has been in today to teach alongside Mrs Hibbert in the transition.

With Mrs Robinson (Year 6 Coordinator) on Long Service Leave in Term 4, as has already been communicated to Class 6B families, Ms Heidi Moore will move from teaching Class 3 Red this term to taking Class 6 Blue next term. In her absence, Ms Kennedy Proctor will step up to act as Year 6 Coordinator and Ms Annabel Coome will step into the Year 6 Assistant Year Coordinator role for Term 4.

R U OK Day

In our most recent assembly, some of our students highlighted and spoke to the connection between R U OK day which is highlighted today and our School Values. This was echoed by our Yr 10 student presenters and as they so articulately reminded us, this is simply how we should care for each other every day.

Camp Week Update!

Survivor Edition

The weather couldn’t be better, and the children couldn’t be more excited and energised as Camp Week progresses. All three grades have had an incredible amount of fun on their camp days as well as the endless activities back at school.

Resilience, team building, courage, compassion, resourcefulness, and teamwork are key words that underpin everything that has been planned this week, and the students have certainly risen to the occasion by consistently demonstrating these characteristics in all the challenges and learning experiences.

This week we have had the opportunity to reflect upon the importance of outside play and adventure for our youngest learners. As I have walked around to see what everyone is doing, I have witnessed friends solving problems together, helping each other out, showing kindness and friendship to one another and most of all, the level of laughter and conversation has been thrilling.

Being courageous has been a reoccurring theme each day as problems are faced or tasks have children thinking outside of their comfort zone. It has been interesting to watch how friends have approached these tasks together, made mistakes, tried again, and have either enjoyed success or have had to go back to the drawing board!

Sometimes as adults we want to step in and rescue the child from failure to avoid them feeling disappointment or sad, this week has been a wonderful example of how our children learn so much from something going wrong and believing in themselves to carry on. A sense of achievement on the face of a young learner is priceless and realising the world will not come to an end if something doesn’t work out is even better.

Our Prep Reception board is starting to fill up with pictures from the week, I encourage you to stop by and have a look at all the activities from this week, see if you can spot your child doing something you never thought they could!

Here are a few reflections from the grades so far this week:

Year 2

Fire fighters, Police, Survivor Challenges, and Year 2’s Got Talent! Year 2 has done it all this week. We have loved working together to problem solve and being outside in the sunshine. Can we have Camp Week every week?!

Year 1

We loved tug -o-wars and the games on Monday, we get to wear our coloured bandanas and cheer for our friends. We then enjoyed the firemen and police visiting us, we even got to get on the ground and tap the fire fighters on the shoulder! The police showed us all the things they wear and talked about how to be safe when we are on the computer. Primrose Park was so fun, we loved building huts and going on a bushwalk. The favourite thing we did yesterday was making pavlovas; Mr Stubbs’ arm was sore from whipping the cream. I can’t wait for tent building tomorrow.

Kindergarten

Kindy had a busy start to the week with our ‘survivor’ games commencing on Monday morning. Tuesday saw us visiting Clifton Gardens, where we went on a beach scavenger hunt, built sandcastles, played team building games and went on a bush walk, searching for animal habitats. On Wednesday, Kindergarten was thrilled to hear the sirens of the fire brigade and enjoyed learning about how the police and fire brigade keep us safe. We are looking forward to concluding the week with a collaborative art opportunity.

Term 4 Wellbeing Lunchtime Clubs Volunteers

Another term of Wellbeing lunchtime activities draws to a close and we again thank the parents and friends who have volunteered their time to come and share their expertise with our Prep students. Ms Fiebiger has started to put our Term 4 schedule together this week so we are putting the call out to any parent or friend who would like to come for one or more lunchtime to run a wellbeing club. It can be something as simple as dancing to some music, playing some games or even reading a book to our children, it is a lovely way to connect and share.

Warm Weather Reminders

As the weather is warming up, can I please remind everyone to check that your child has their bucket hat named and in bags each day please. We do have a ‘no hat no play’ policy at school. It is heartbreaking to have to ask our students to sit out of play time if they forget their hats. If hats get lost or misplaced, they will, in most cases, find their way back to their owner if there is a name. Thank you for helping us keep our children safe in the sun.

Goodbye and Thank You Mrs Stokes

Next Thursday will be Mrs Stokes’ last day in the Lucy Hill Library. We have truly enjoyed the time Mrs Stokes has been with us, and I know you will join me in saying farewell and thank you. Sharron will be heading back into retirement and will enjoy walking her dogs on the beach!

We welcome back Mrs Roberts next term, we look forward to hearing all about her travels and experiences while she has been away.

Missing Hats

With the weather warming up it is important that all children have a hat to wear in the playground. Can we please ask all families to check that their child, only has the school hat that belongs to them. We have many hats missing and believe that many of them might have been taken home by mistake. Can everyone please ensure they have the correct hat, and that every hat has a name clearly written on the hat.

Secondary Sport

Playing a pivotal role in the success of the Redlands Sports programs are our coaching staff. Their role in inspiring and shaping the lives of young athletes in sport through their guidance, mentorship and expertise, they instil values in which we hold within the Redlands community, this falls beyond the playing field/court, fostering personal growth and athletic development. When speaking to coaching I always ask them think back to a great coach they had and how they would have possessed a unique combination of qualities that set them apart:

  • Effective Communication – this lies at the core of coaching, understanding the athletes’ needs and concerns. Creating an environment where open dialogue flourishes, fostering trust and camaraderie.
  • Role Modelling – demonstrating unwavering dedication, discipline and sportsmanship, their passion for the sport and commitment to continuous improvement inspiring young athletes to strive for excellence.
  • Adaptability – is crucial, great coaches have the ability to tailor their approach to suit individual learning styles and development stages, ensuring each athlete reaches their potential, they provide constructive feedback and encourage resilience in the face of setbacks.
  • Empathy – this enables the coaches to understand the pressure and challenges young athletes face not just within sport but in general life. by offering support and guidance they contribute to the holistic growth of the students.

Our aim is to have all our coaches as mentors and motivators, developing the ability to inspire students beyond wins and losses, nurturing their character, confidence and potential.

‘A good coach will make his players see what they can be rather than what they are’

Ara Parseghian

2023 NSW All Schools Athletics – Self Nominations

The NSW All Schools will be held at Sydney Olympic Park. It will be split into two competitions based upon age groups. There is no qualification process and any athlete from Redlands can enter, participate and compete in this event. This is a great experience for our Redlands athletes to verse other athletes from schools across NSW and get use to a formal competition setting.

The 16 – 19 Years NSW All Schools Track and Field Championships will be Saturday 23 September – Monday 25 September and the 12 – 15 Years NSW All Schools Track and Field Championships will be Friday 6 October to Sunday 8 October.

Ages 12 – 15 – Registrations and event information can be accessed here. Registrations close Friday 22 September, 12pm.

Redlands Athletics Head Coach Mr Nick Walker and Redlands Coach Mr Rich Frost will do their best to get out to the events to support athletes; however, students will need to get their own way to and from Sydney Olympic Park for their event.

If you are registering for the event please communicate that with Mr Walker (nwalker@redlands.nsw.edu.au) and myself.

Dance

Time is ticking and we are now in the full throws of performance season at the Academy. Please see below for details on our End of Year Performance (EoYP) Holiday Rehearsals.

Teachers are hard at work preparing your dances, and RDA staff and Friends of Dance are busily preparing costumes. A big thanks to all of you who attended the sewing bee this morning and for leaving laden with wings and leotards. Lots still to be done but we made a good start.

We are thrilled that the Celebration of 25 Years of Dance at Redlands was captured by Tagged Pictures and the video will be uploaded to the DANCE AWARDS PULSE page very soon. For those of you who didn’t attend, it is well worth the watch as it showcases our wonderful students, touches on the past and provides insight into the vision for the Academy moving forward.

We enjoyed the presence of our Year 12 Ballet graduates for the last time yesterday, where they took a final class with Ms Samantha and watched our Les Sylphides rehearsal with Ms Traynor. Wishing them the very best and we will miss them around the Academy.
