CIS is the most competitive diocese in NSW and attracts some of the best junior Cross Country runners in Australia. Our Redlands students did exceptionally well considering the short season of training. Congratulations to the following Yr 8 students: 13 Years Girls – Lauren Smith (39th place), 14 Years Boys – Lockie Taylor (45th place), 14 Years Girls – Olivia Vigneault (13th Place), Ella Palmet (30th place), Eve Farrell (41st place) and Elizabeth Holtheuer (54th place).
Science/Geography Excursion – Sydney Institute of Marine Science
“Last week Year 8 went to the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. We did many amazing things throughout the day from learning about the ecosystems around us, to dissecting a squid. However, the most eye-opening thing of all was sifting through sand we sourced from the beach to look for microplastics. We put the sand into recycled milk cartons and added salt water to make the sand settle to the bottom of the carton. Then we filtered it through a coffee filter and when all the water drained away we opened the filter to see if we had any microplastics. We had a few microplastics and we looked at them through a hand-held microscope. We learned some cool facts about the pollution of Sydney’s beaches such as the most common rubbish found in Sydney’s oceans and waterways is plastic and cigarette butts. All in all, this excursion was an amazing experience and I learned a lot”. Jessica Travers
“Last Friday I went to the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. We did lots of activities such as dissecting, taking pictures, digging for rubbish in the sand and taking a look at the local environment. My favourite part was dissecting the muscle and the squid. It was fun because we got to take a look at the insides of those two different animals. It was an overall great experience and I would definitely do it again”. Quinn Bryant.
