Head of Junior School
Junior Music Festival
Our annual Junior Music Festival takes place in Week 2 of next term at 4.30pm on Thursday 2 August. This is always one of my highlights of our school year with the involvement of each and every Junior School student. Our Cocurricular ensembles and curriculum classes have been eagerly rehearsing and will perform a variety of repertoire that will explore a STEAM theme, celebrating our cross-curriculum learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.
The event takes place on site in Robert Dunnet Hall with tickets available via Trybooking from 10am next Monday 25 June. Please note that all Cocurricular rehearsals will be cancelled in Week 2 in order to facilitate preparation for the concert.

Jump Rope for Heart 2018
The Junior School, Preparatory School and Redlands House have again joined hundreds of schools across the country in the Heart Foundation’s ‘Jump Rope for Heart’, the largest and most recognised fundraising and physical activity program for young people in Australia. With 25% of Australian students considered unhealthy, it is more important than ever for students to get involved in physical activity. After our incredible school efforts of raising $66,000 in 2016, this year we have set ourselves a target fundraising goal of $70,000 for this special cause.
The event was launched in assembly on Monday with representatives from the organisation speaking to the students and showing them a skipping trick or two! Fundraising for Jump Rope for Heart works through an online platform, where you can create a secure fundraising page for your child. Please register your child under the correct section of the School. We are all fundraising towards the same target; however, we are having a bit of friendly competition amongst the sections as we follow our collective target as it grows towards our overall fundraising goal.
A note with extra information has been placed under relevant sections on Redlands Pulse for parents. Please use these links to create a fundraising page for your child: Junior School Link; Preparatory School Link; Redlands House Link
Thank you for supporting your children and the Heart Foundation in this year’s Jump Rope for Heart.

Digital Citizenship and Safety
I read the following message about the video game, Fortnite, in last week’s Note Day from our Yr 7 Advisor, Mrs Jansons. Having heard from teachers and students that this is a game that a number of our Junior School students play, I share her comments for any Junior School parents who may find this of interest. The game carries an M Rating on its website which should preclude any Junior School aged student using it but, in the event that your child is playing this game, I hope Mrs Jansons’ comments below provide you with some additional food for thought on this game.
“If you have children between 8 and 18 years old, the chances are you’ve heard of the multiplayer online shooter game Fortnite: Battle Royale. There are mixed opinions surrounding this game. To assist in shedding some light I’ve included a few articles you may find useful. The Guardian’s parents’ guide provides an overview of the game. SMH explores many justified concerns arising from the captivated teen market. ABC News considers some of the benefits of and advice for such online interactions.
Fads can be difficult to navigate with teens. Always remember to set your expectations, make appropriate rules, inform your teen – and inform yourself, respect your teens privacy but also be aware of what your teen watches and reads.
Looking for a roadmap to find your way through the challenges of adolescence? Raising Children Network has some fantastic articles, tips and hints to help you along the way.”
Also connected to digital education and safety, our eLearning Coordinator, Mrs Winrow has shared the article below for parents to read from Cyber Safety Presenter and Education Consultant, Marty McGauran.
Instagram…do you know all the facts?
Instagram is a popular social media platform that alarmingly is being used by an increasing number of primary school students. Fundamentally, any primary school age users are lying about their age as Instagram clearly states:
Worryingly, many parents are either unaware of their child’s account or have seen fit to give permission. I often hear parents remark that Instagram is allowed for their pre-teen because they have their account on private and they have their mum as a follower. Unfortunately, the risks of Instagram for “immature users” has grown dramatically with some new features:
- Users can now send private, disappearing images/videos (just like Snapchat)
- Users can now broadcast themselves live and conversely view other people’s live, unfiltered broadcasts
It is becoming more common place that schools are dealing with online issues that spill over into the classroom and playground. This is particularly so where underage students are using social media apps that they are clearly not developmentally equipped to handle. Most importantly, decisions around children and social media must be made with an informed and knowledgeable adult. In this ever-changing online world, parents are continually challenged to keep up with the latest apps, what is and isn’t suitable. Whilst there are many places to find info online, here are two of the best:
Australian eSafety Commissioner – A lot of up to date information on all apps and games, as well as where and how to report cyberbullying and a dedicated parent section (iParent)
Common Sense Media – Your one stop shop for App, game and movie reviews. Find out the dangers and suitability of the latest and greatest digital trends.
Let us not forget that social media can be a very positive and powerful medium, highlighted most recently by activist hashtags #welcomerefugees #metoo #blacklivesmatter #ridewithme #armmewith that have had a genuine impact on our society being a better place. There will be plenty of time to be part of this positivity when our children grow up, just not yet!
As we move into Semester 2, our eLearning team are planning to host another technology-focused parent seminar, which have always proved to be of great interest and value to our parents and in turn, to students.
Semester 1 Reports
As Junior School teachers and I finish the detailed process of each student’s first semester report, please note that these will be made available to parents via the online parent portal in the first week of the holiday break. An SMS message will be sent to notify you when they have been uploaded for you to access. Back copies of your son or daughter’s reports are also available via Redlands Pulse. To access the reports parents will need their Redlands Pulse username and password. Parents requiring assistance re username or password should email pulse@redlands.nsw.edu.au as soon as possible.
Term 3/4 Departure Notice
As we are approaching the mid-point of the year, this is a reminder that those families who are planning on leaving the School during or at the end of Term 3 or Term 4 are required to give notice to the Principal via an email to registrar@redlands.nsw.edu.au by the following dates:
