Year 7
Announcements and Upcoming Events
Uniforms: Yr 7 looked very sharp this past Monday arriving for Chapel in full school uniform, including blazers. Students have been reminded this week that they are expected to be in full school uniform to and from school as well as to change back into their school uniform after PE at the earliest possible opportunity: recess, lunch or after school.
Lockers: We appreciate your support in reminding students to always lock their personal belongings in their locker with a working lock. Many students are leaving belongings in Liggins Quad and, inadvertently, items are being picked up by other students. It is important we manage and take responsibility for our own items.
Assessment Notifications: This is a reminder that all Assessment Notifications are released to parents and students at least two weeks prior to the due date. Students are alerted of these notifications through iLearn and parents are able to access them in the parent portal.
Vaccinations: 12 November will be Dose 2 of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine
This Week
Four of our Yr 7 students, Conor Petersen, Isaac Brooks, William Andrew and Thomas Jackson competed in the annual Aurecon Bridge Building Competition this week and were awarded the Strength Award. Their 110 gram bridge, made from balsa wood and string, supported a 50.2 kg a load. What an amazing achievement! Aurecon believes that engineering, science and technology industries must work together to make these fields more relatable and appealing for young people and their competition provides a real world experience for our young engineers.
Last week, our Yr 7 cohort had the pleasure of meeting and listening to Mr Christopher Allen, Coordinator of History. Mr Allen was invited to speak to our cohort to share advice in overcoming setbacks and working through challenges, our theme this term in the The Yr 7 Marathon. Mr Allen is an engaging and passionate speaker and the students were captivated throughout his presentation. Some advice shared by Mr Allen included being a good friend and having a few friends you can count on and truly speak with about what is going on and how you are feeling, putting yourself outside of your comfort zone to try new experiences and purposefully challenge yourself with things you do not think you are good at and get involved as much as possible. We thank Mr Allen for his time, advice and personal experiences shared with our cohort.
Our last 2019 Prefect Assembly with Yr 12 students was held this week. The strong Yr 12 cohort took it upon themselves to organise several events with our Yr 7 students to share advice, connect with students and share their own experiences being in Yr 7. Jasmine Black and Alfie Leach represented the Yr 7 cohort in a Thank You to Yr 12 at the Prefect Assembly, recognising their efforts in holding the Yr 7 Pizza and Movie Night, organising two Q&A sessions during Tutor, volunteering their time to support the newly developed Yr 7 Service Committees and generally being strong role models for our younger students. We thank the Yr 12 students and wish them all the best in the HSC and IB examinations!
Recommended Mini-Unit from Dr Prue Salter
As it is a very busy time of year with assessments and end of year examinations around the corner, it is a fantastic opportunity for students to sit down on their own or with their parents after receiving results from assessments to go through their marks and assess how they use feedback from teachers. To support this process, login to the Study Skills website and choose the unit After Tests and Exams. This unit guides students on how to learn from feedback to perform better in the future.

Pastoral Care
This term, our Pastoral Program focuses on self-reflection for behaviour management utilising the flowchart What happened? What did you think about it? How did you feel about it? How did you behave?.
We will continue to touch on digital citizenship, summarising notes and study skills with help from Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills website and we will begin to focus specifically on the first three habits from 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.
