From the Principal

It was an exciting milestone in our Senior Campus redevelopment yesterday afternoon, when we held a Topping Out Ceremony for the New Learning Hub to celebrate the completion of construction of the top floor of the building. We were delighted to welcome the owner, managers and key onsite personnel from Buildcorp, representatives from our architects and project managers, Chair Glenda McLoughlin and other members of the Redlands Board, the School Executive, RPFA President Michelle Tea and other RPFA members and Redlands staff.

Our lead contractors have done a splendid job in reaching this point since commencing onsite at the beginning of this year. We have appreciated the positive and close relationship with Buildcorp that has helped us continue to run an operating school while these works have been occurring.

During a break in the rain, we took the opportunity to walk up to the top level of the building, which will provide a wonderful learning space for our students from Term 3 next year. We also inspected the work that is progressing on lower levels including the internal structural walls of the Visual Arts and Innovative Design departments on the ground floor, as the levels have continued to grow above. We are certainly looking forward to achieving occupancy of this building in the coming year as it will transform our Senior Campus and provide our students and teachers with facilities that will give tremendous support to our innovative approach to teaching and learning.

I wish to congratulate Yr 7 Engineering Club team members William Andrew, Isaac Brooks, Thomas Jackson and Conor Petersen who won the Strength Award at the Aurecon Bridge Building competition on Tuesday, competing against 55 other schools. Their 110 gram balsa wood and string bridge supported a load of 50.2kg. What a splendid achievement!

Tomorrow night we are delighted to be hosting the Grand Finals of the SDN Debating Competition and I wish all the very best to the four Redlands teams who will be competing for Finals honours – Senior, Yr 7, Primary A and Primary B teams.

RPFA Second Hand Uniform Sale

Thank you to the RPFA Committee and all the parent volunteers who were involved in organising the Second Hand Uniform Sale last Sunday. Your efforts are greatly appreciated as many Redlands families will benefit and it also supports our environmental initiatives. $8,000 was raised from this sale which will be dedicated to the means-tested Scholarship Fund.

Let Your Light Shine on Education

The Redlands Scholarship Fund, an endowment fund for a means-tested Scholarship, was launched in 2010 by Dr Lennox with the vision of providing opportunities for exceptionally talented students who will make a strong contribution to both Redlands and our society, as well as enhancing the diversity of our student body.

Due to the generosity of the Redlands community, we currently have two students in the Secondary School benefitting from this Fund. Our goal for this year is to accumulate funds to be able to offer a third full time means-tested scholarship.

If you wish to join us and our Yr 12 students on this journey and contribute to this wonderful cause with a tax deductible gift, please

Second Hand Uniform Sale

The Second Hand Uniform Sale was held last weekend. The sale has become somewhat of an institution at Redlands and we are pleased that we are able to make it beneficial to our parents, but this year also to the environment. Our uniforms get used at least twice if not more and this year they have a further life as we are donating the no longer current and very old uniforms to the MS Society who will distribute them to those in need overseas. Additionally, if they are too old to be worn, they will be turned into mattress stuffing, a great outcome all round for sustainability.

As you also may know, all proceeds from the sale go to the Redlands Scholarship Fund and with the sales made on the weekend, we were able to donate $7924 to the fund.

All this would not be possible without the help of the volunteers so a big thank you to all who helped out. We are very grateful for your participation.

If you would like to know more about the opportunities to get involved by volunteering, please do not hesitate to contact the RPFA at rpfa@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Also please watch this space as we will soon be holding our Annual General Meeting and new committee members are always welcome. We will also be calling for volunteers to help with the Spring Fair next year, a lot of fun!

Spirit Week

This week is Spirit Week where our Yr 12 student leaders organise a variety of activities to celebrate our School Spirit in the Arts, Sports and through the Houses. On Tuesday, our Yr 12 Prefects focused their last Prefect Assembly around “school spirit”. A new initiative they instituted this year was for each of the House Captains to award House Spirit Awards to students across Yrs 7-12 who have illustrated exemplary House spirit throughout the year. Yesterday, our House spirit was further on display with a House dodgeball competition taken out by McDouall. Today we celebrate our School Spirit through sports with a Staff v Yr 12 students Basketball game. And on Friday, we celebrate our School spirit through the Arts with a special lunchtime activity. Friday is also a mufti day where students can wear their House colours on the day with the money going to the Yr 12 Legacy Gift for the Scholarship Fund.

I have been reflecting on School spirit this week and how it is displayed at Redlands. In speaking to a number of the Yr 12 leaders in recent days, they have said that one of the accomplishments of which they are most proud is the further development of School spirit this year. And reflecting on this past year, I would wholeheartedly agree. Redlands is not a school that “forces” or “mandates” students to attend an event or activity to cheer, support or make up an audience. Instead, when our students support each other in the incredibly wide array of activities offered, they do so because they want to an they have chosen to be there. To me, this is in indication of true School spirit. I have seen this School spirit displayed in so many ways this year. Whether it was witnessing the large number of senior students who travelled out to Blacktown to support our Girls 1sts Football team in their Grand Final or the excited congratulations extended by one of our Athletics Captains to a successful junior student at the ISA Athletics Championships. Or whether it was the Yr 12s spending time with Yr 7 Tutor Groups this term or the large number of Yr 11 and 12 students who showed up last night at the opening of the IB Yr 12 Visual Arts Exhibition to support their friends. These examples, and so many, many more like this, are true examples of School spirit which happen daily here at Redlands.

Blackmores Run

On Sunday morning, Mr Gray, Ms Bergin, Ms Riley and I joined over 70 students and parents participating in the Sydney Running Festival 10km run. This initiative began last year and was a way for students to raise awareness for mental health as well as money for Headspace, an organisation dedicated to helping young people who struggle with mental illness. It was wonderful to see so many Yr 12 students wearing lots of pink and coming together as a community. While there were a few sore legs on Monday, I am certain that all of us involved enjoyed this special day. I would like to especially thank Chloe Woodward who has led this initiative over the past few months and all of the parents who donated money to support this worthy cause.

Yr 12s

The banner for the Yr 12s is up in the Liggins courtyard counting down their final days at School. (While the IB students will return for classes at the beginning of next term as their final examinations are later than the HSC Examinations, we will officially celebrate the commencement of Yr 12 with their Prize Giving and Valedictory evening next Wednesday.) It is an exciting and emotional time for our senior students as one stage of their life’s journey comes to a close and another one is about to begin. Personally, I have greatly enjoyed seeing this group of Yr 12 students mature and flourish over the last few years as they have been exemplary leaders for our school community. I hope all of them are able to balance their continued preparation for their final examinations with a sense of joy and appreciation of the many events planned for them over the next week to wish them a fond farewell.

Yr 12 House Morning Teas

One way we have already acknowledged and celebrated our Yr 12 students over the past few weeks is through House Morning Teas. These events have provided an opportunity for the two Tutor Groups in each House to gather to reflect on their time together in the House and/or their Tutor Groups. For many students their first “connection” with Redlands has been through their House and they have had this association from their first day at school – even all the way back to Kindergarten! They have also been together in the same Tutor Groups from the beginning of Yr 7 (or from whenever they individually started their Redlands journey). It was wonderful to hear the Heads of House and the House Captains from the four Houses share their individual reflections on this special connection to the School.

Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition

Last night was the official opening of the Yr 12 IB Visual Arts Exhibition in Redlands Hall. The exhibition showcases not only the talents, but also the effort, dedication and discipline of our Yr 12 IB Visual Arts students who have produced works of such a high quality. Personally, I was so impressed with the deep thoughtfulness behind each piece of work and appreciated the “guided tour” that some of the students were able to give me of their works. A special thank you to the staff and parents who have supported these Visual Arts students on this journey and who must have been so proud to see their finished products on display last night.

Public Transport

I often receive emails or phone calls from members of the public complimenting our students on their appropriate behaviour, polite respect and or support for others when travelling on public transport. It is wonderful to know that many of our students are representing themselves and their school so well in public. However, unfortunately I occasionally receive messages where our students are not behaving appropriately. This week we are reminding all students of a few simple messages: that they should behave respectfully to each other and all members of the public when on public transport; they should stand up and give up their seat for paying members of the public who are standing; they should not clutter the aisles with their bags; and they should always tap on and tap off with their student Opal cards (even though they are not charged for this usage). Thank you for supporting us in ensuring that our students are always showing the best versions of themselves in public.

Uniform Shop

In the school holidays, the Uniform Shop will be open on Monday 30 September, Thursday 10 October and Friday 11 October between 9.00am – 3.00pm. If you wish to make an appointment, please click here.

Engineering Club

The Engineering Club this term had a competition to determine which students would represent Redlands in the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition. William Andrew, Isaac Brooks, Thomas Jackson and Conor Petersen, all from Yr 7, were the successful students who spent every lunch for the last month designing and building their bridge. On Tuesday the team from Redlands joined 55 other schools at the Art Gallery of NSW where they were quizzed by a panel of engineers regarding their bridge design and then they watched as their bridge was load tested to destruction. The team were rewarded by winning the Strength category. Their 110 gram balsa wood and string bridge supported a mass of 50.2kg. This earned the school an impressive giant cheque and each student shared in a prize. The students came away from the day enthusiastic about their short term engineering future as they discussed modifications they intend to make next year. Congratulations to all members of the club for their enthusiasm and particularly our successful bridge builders.

Japanese Exchange

Seven passionate Japanese students (James Reid, Anna Saunders, Caroline Bates, Lachlan Edwards, Harrison Winton, Tylor Wessels  and Katherine Keller) departed for Kiryu City, Japan, on exchange at Jutoku High School (Redlands sister school) on Saturday 7 September. They flew from Sydney to Haneda, Tokyo, with Mr Okawa, and were warmly welcomed by their host families and teachers of Jutoku at Shin-Kiryu Station. On their first day a special whole school assembly was held for these students, and they competently and confidently delivered their individual speeches in Japanese to the school community. Their presentations were well received by the audience. The seven Redlands students are spending two weeks at Jutoku High School and will experience the immersion program by attending various academic classes and participating in a range of cocurricular activities and school events while in Japan.

Chaplain

Our Winter School students have been learning all sorts of life skills especially around living in community and being independent. I have had a few days at Winter School speaking with students and hearing them reflecting on their experiences.

On Monday night we had a community chapel which was more interactive than we usually can do in Sydney. Students engaged with the reading, posing questions and answering each other’s queries. Callum Wardman-Browne accompanied us on the piano as we sang, which was both generous and brave. One student reflected, “I really miss chapel, I miss the time to reflect”.

In the beautiful surroundings of Winter School there is so much to reflect on and praise God for. This has been accentuated by a late season snowfall. The beauty of the pure white flakes floating down and coating everything is a fine powder of glistening white brings out the child-like delight in us all.

The beauty reminded me of the verse in scripture Isaiah 1:18 “though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;” The snow covers the trees the rocks and the ground so that the familiar colours of the Australian terrain disappear and white glistens all around. This is the image God wants us to visualise. God sees the darkness and red stain of guilt with in all of us, yet He is determined to provide a way for each of us to be cleansed as pure as the snow. It costs him, in the death of Jesus but he longs for each of us to be made clean and restored to a relationship with him and so we will be white as snow and yet to him even more beautiful.

Blackmore’s Run

Congratulations to the Yr 12 students who celebrated another event in their final year of school by competing in the Blackmore’s Run last weekend. Chloe Woodward led the fundraising effort in support of Headspace and encouraged participation. Again this year, there was a commendable number of students, staff and other family members taking part. The passion and enthusiasm to support such a worthwhile and relevant organisation was evident in the planning for this event and in the joyous participation on the day.

Cambodia Preparation

Students travelling to Cambodia at the end of the year are nearing the end of their fundraising efforts. They have been challenged with finding creative ways to each contribute $750 towards two activities; one is a community project they will undertake during their trip and the other is the ongoing support we provide to M’Lop Tapang, a community operated, not-for-profit organisation that have been working with vulnerable children, youth, and families in the Sihanoukville region for more than 15 years. Students need to complete their fundraising so that we can make arrangements for the funds to be used between now and their trip to buy project materials.

Junior School Movie Event

One team of Yr 11 Cambodia students are organising an after school Movie and Sausage Sizzle for Yrs 3 – 6 students next Tuesday afternoon as a fundraiser. You and your child are invited to come along, with all proceeds raised going towards the community project or to support our friends at M’Lop Tapang

The event will be supervised by Secondary School teachers and senior students but parents are welcome to attend. Teachers and students will also make arrangements to collect students from the Junior Campus on the afternoon of the event and walk them to the Senior Campus.

Date: Tuesday 24 September
Location: Redlands Hall (Senior Campus)
Who: Students in Yrs 3 – 6 (and their parents optional)
Cost: $15 for movie, popcorn and lollies
Tickets: https://www.trybooking.com/BFJRQ
Optional extra: Post movie Sausage Sizzle ($5 sausage and fruit drink)

Junior School Maths and Reading Clubs

As this term comes to an end, it is wonderful to hear about the efforts of our Secondary School volunteers helping in the Junior School Maths and Reading Clubs. These mentors have been visiting the Junior School every week to work with their buddy. They have developed positive, supportive relationships with their buddies and with the guidance of the Junior School teachers they have helped to build their buddies’ confidence through lots of practice activities, guidance and encouragement. Our senior mentors have also grown from the experience, learning about empathy and perseverance.

Winter School

Week 8 of Winter School has brought some warmer weather, a riverside BBQ, a spontaneous dance party and a visit to Yarrangobilly Caves.

Students have been busy on their academic subjects. Yr 7 Music students have finished their music video which they have been working on throughout the term. Working with sounds recorded on the slopes, they created a music video titled The Hat Thief. This video was proudly presented to the rest of the Winter School cohort during Thursday’s Prep time.

Students have continued to enjoy their ski lessons: “The ski lessons are great, especially with my instructor Graeme, who is a total legend and helps to pick us up when we stack.” Jemima Flavell

Seeing the students’ progress in their ski and snowboard skills this term has been fantastic. The beginner group are now doing black runs. Everyone has increased their confidence, technique and speed.

On Wednesday, students and staff enjoyed a buffet dinner at The Station restaurant. Some of the students also enjoyed a spontaneous dance party before Prep: “We had an awesome dance party tonight and got to enjoy Ms Stewart’s spectacular music choices as well as Mr Levick, Emily and Ms Pierce’s dance moves.” Willow Stefanovic

On Friday Helen surprised us with a BBQ lunch at Thredbo after ski lessons finished. It was lovely to sit by the river with friends and enjoy the sausage sandwiches.

Students and staff gathered in the Rec Room for a talent show on Saturday night. A highlight was Callum Wardman-Browne’s piano performance of Elton John’s Your Song.

On Sunday students headed to Yarrangobilly Caves and Thermal Pools. It was fascinating seeing all the rock formations and walking around in another section of the Snowy Mountains National Park.

As we near the end of Winter School it has been great to hear from students about their experiences:

“Winter School has been a great experience to mature and become more independent.” Daniel Cullen

“Winter School so far has been an amazing experience that has allowed me to build bonds and relationships with many people that I probably would not have talked to otherwise. It has also helped me learn to take responsibility for my personal and educational life. The on-snow activities are amazing and have improved my technique extremely.” Charles Baskerville

“An experience filled with emotional rollercoasters.” Mia Kloiser-Jones

“The best way to learn and have great time with your mates.” Willem McCormack

We are all looking forward to sharing our Winter School experience with family and friends at the final dinner in a couple of weeks. Until then, here’s to another fantastic week at Winter School. Fingers crossed the snow continues to hold up as spring has well and truly sprung!

Motivation

“Many students use ‘I don’t have any motivation’ as an excuse for not doing work. You have to accept that these are just excuses they are using to justify doing what they want to do, ie. doing no work. It is a cop-out and it is really due to fear, even though they don’t realise it. It is that they may be secretly afraid of doing badly at school. The fear of failure or not meeting expectations has led some children to look for excuses to not do any work, so that if they do badly then it is not because they tried and failed, it is because they didn’t do the work. It is a safety mechanism their brain is putting in place. To make change students must take responsibility for their performance and realise that they are the only person who can change the situation. There are no quick or easy fixes for developing motivation. Students need to take baby steps and keep trying different techniques over a period of time”. – Dr Prue Salter, ELES

Japan Exchange

Caroline Bates, Lachlan Edwards, James Reid and Anna Saunders are currently representing Redlands on exchange in Japan. Last Monday was the first day at Jutoku High School (Redlands sister school), and a special whole school assembly was held for them. Interesting Article of the Week

please read

At times, mobile phones are confiscated at school due to inappropriate use during the day. These phones are then returned to the student at the end of the day and have sometimes been sitting on my desk during this time. I have noticed increasingly how many of these phones are consistently buzzing during the day, and have upwards of 40 Snapchat notifications during just a few hours! Therefore, this week I have attached an article, which includes a TedTalk, on the addiction of Snapchat and the idea of Snapstreak. It makes really interesting listening and reading and raises some concerning issues as to why teenagers can’t put Snapchat down.

Study Guides

Yr 9 Yearly Examinations will be in Week 4 of Term 4. Examination notifications with study guides are now available for students to access on iLearn. Students will be able to download these study guides from the respective Course pages for each subject that they are enrolled in. Please encourage your son or daughter to download these guides so as they can appropriately prepare for Term 4 examinations.

Pastoral Care Program

Students are continuing to look at Mindfulness activities and implementing them during Pastoral Care time. In addition, we have had the final Yr 12 Prefect Assembly and students have also completed their approaches to learning for this term.

Social Awareness Program

Students are finishing off their presentations of organisations addressing inequality for refugees, or coming up with ideas as to how they can support or increase awareness for these organisations.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

Week 10

Friday 27 September

Spirit Week 2019

This week was Yr 12 Spirit Week –  Yr 12’s opportunity to celebrate their final few days of school with the school community. Throughout the week, Yr 12 hosted a student led assembly, a House dodgeball competition, staff v students basketball game, school BBQ, performing arts events and a House mufti day on Friday. All proceeds from the fundraising events will go to the Legacy Fund. Thank you, Yr 12.

Yr 9 2020 Cultural Immersion

There was a fantastic turn-out at the Yr 9 2020 Cultural Immersion information evening last week. The evening was inspiring and it’s exciting to see much anticipation and eagerness among the Yr 8 community in response. The evening provided a general overview of the program and an opportunity for a number of key program leaders to share their experiences. If you were unable to attend, there will be much more information shared over the next nine months. At this stage, of particular interest may be the video Culture, Country and Connection from MGGS. The Culture College website also provides a wealth of useful information. If you have any particular questions about the program, please email Mr Simon Colyer, Dean of Activities, or on 9968 9886.

Yr 12 Legacy Gift

The Year 12 Legacy Gift team continued their fundraising efforts by hosting a lunchtime sausage sizzle and drinks stall today. If you wish to join Yr 12 on their Legacy Gift journey and contribute to the means-tested Scholarship Fund with a tax deductible gift, please DONATE HERE. Every gift matters!

Announcements and Upcoming Events

Uniforms: Yr 7 looked very sharp this past Monday arriving for Chapel in full school uniform, including blazers.  Students have been reminded this week that they are expected to be in full school uniform to and from school as well as to change back into their school uniform after PE at the earliest possible opportunity: recess, lunch or after school.

Lockers: We appreciate your support in reminding students to always lock their personal belongings in their locker with a working lock. Many students are leaving belongings in Liggins Quad and, inadvertently, items are being picked up by other students. It is important we manage and take responsibility for our own items.

Assessment Notifications: This is a reminder that all Assessment Notifications are released to parents and students at least two weeks prior to the due date. Students are alerted of these notifications through iLearn and parents are able to access them in the parent portal.

Vaccinations: 12 November will be Dose 2 of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccine

This Week

Four of our Yr 7 students, Conor Petersen, Isaac Brooks, William Andrew and Thomas Jackson competed in the annual Aurecon Bridge Building Competition this week and were awarded the Strength Award. Their 110 gram bridge,  made from balsa wood and string, supported a 50.2 kg a load. What an amazing achievement! Aurecon believes that engineering, science and technology industries must work together to make these fields more relatable and appealing for young people and their competition provides a real world experience for our young engineers.

Last week, our Yr 7 cohort had the pleasure of meeting and listening to Mr Christopher Allen, Coordinator of History. Mr Allen was invited to speak to our cohort to share advice in overcoming setbacks and working through challenges, our theme this term in the The Yr 7 Marathon.  Mr Allen is an engaging and passionate speaker and the students were captivated throughout his presentation. Some advice shared by Mr Allen included being a good friend and having a few friends you can count on and truly speak with about what is going on and how you are feeling, putting yourself outside of your comfort zone to try new experiences and purposefully challenge yourself with things you do not think you are good at and get involved as much as possible. We thank Mr Allen for his time, advice and personal experiences shared with our cohort.

Our last 2019 Prefect Assembly with Yr 12 students was held this week. The strong Yr 12 cohort took it upon themselves to organise several events with our Yr 7 students to share advice, connect with students and share their own experiences being in Yr 7. Jasmine Black and Alfie Leach represented the Yr 7 cohort in a Thank You to Yr 12 at the Prefect Assembly, recognising their efforts in holding the Yr 7 Pizza and Movie Night, organising two Q&A sessions during Tutor, volunteering their time to support the newly developed Yr 7 Service Committees and generally being strong role models for our younger students.  We thank the Yr 12 students and wish them all the best in the HSC and IB examinations!

Recommended Mini-Unit from Dr Prue Salter

As it is a very busy time of year with assessments and end of year examinations around the corner, it is a fantastic opportunity for students to sit down on their own or with their parents after receiving results from assessments to go through their marks and assess how they use feedback from teachers. To support this process, login to the Study Skills website and choose the unit After Tests and Exams. This unit guides students on how to learn from feedback to perform better in the future.

Pastoral Care

This term, our Pastoral Program focuses on self-reflection for behaviour management utilising the flowchart What happened? What did you think about it? How did you feel about it? How did you behave?.

We will continue to touch on digital citizenship, summarising notes and study skills with help from Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills website and we will begin to focus specifically on the first three habits from 7 Habits of  Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

Spanish News

Redlands Junior School students participated again with great enthusiasm in the recent Education Perfect Language World Championships. I was thrilled to hear of our involvement and results which were outstanding and congratulate and all of our students and Senora Colagiuri. As a school, Redlands placed:

  • 1st in Spanish in Australia out of 65 schools
  • 2nd in Spanish out of 1,054 schools worldwide
  • Redlands finished 26th globally for all languages out of 1,644 schools.

Many of our Junior School students achieved certificates in the competition as outlined below:

  • 22 Credit certificates (500 points)
  • 17 Bronze certificates (1000 points)
  • 7 Silver certificates (2000 points)
  • 11 Gold certificates (3000 points): Jolon Chan, James Emmett, Finlay Scott Brown, Rabiah Singh, Cooper Rinaldo, Ruby Sommer, Victoria Rivera, Rowan Petersen, Liam Petersen, Zoe Noakes and Grace McSweeney
  • 4 Emerald certificates (5000 points): Roy Rivera, Caitlin Edwards, Annabelle Hwang and Alexander Kraszewski-Francia
  • 3 Elite Certificates (10,000 points) Krishna Gupta, Christopher Stevens and Michael Havryk

The highest scoring students in each Year Group received a $30 iTunes voucher from Education Perfect and we recognise and congratulate all of the students for their amazing effort and commitment to language study.

Certificates will be distributed as soon as they are received from Education Perfect and the ten highest scoring students from each Year Group also enjoyed a well-deserved churros and pizza party this week!

Lower North Shore Science Competition

Once again, the Junior School was delighted to host this year’s Lower North Shore Science Competition, organised by Eye Heart Science.

The competition invites primary school aged students from schools in the local area to present a Science experiment and it was wonderful to see many of our Junior School students involved this year, sharing both their curiosity for Science and a problem-solving mindset connected to real-world issues.

Eye Heart Science founder, Dr Alana Wylie, has a wonderfully infectious passion for Science and we have enjoyed a strong connection with her since 2011 when she became our Scientist in Residence through a CSIRO Scientists in Schools’ program. This long-standing connection was a catalyst for Dr Wylie to change careers and she now works solely to inspire the next generation of scientific thinkers.

Congratulations to our Redlands students who were involved in this event:
Yr 3: Sienna De Saxe, Ollie Hosker, Isaac McIntosh, Liam Randall and Lily Van Hulsen
Yr 4: Charli Amm, Tom Brown, Emma Cruttenden, Ruairi Lambert, George McIntosh, Grace McSweeney, Max Nicholson, Jay Roger, Sebastian Suit Solari and Zetong Shen
Yr 5: Julia Cooper-Hor, Kira Delaney and Freya Stasko
Yr 6: James Gray, Ben Hanning, Carolina Pedro Inacio, Alessandro Scali and Aiden Van Hulsen

I know, for many of them, beyond the challenge of making their scientific thinking visible, the challenge of presenting to visiting students, parents, teachers and judges was one that they overcame with great success and I loved talking to them about their experiments as they explained their thinking, reasoning and also the ‘great’ mistakes that were made along the way to get to their final presentation.

New Learning Hub ‘Topping Out’ Ceremony

Yesterday afternoon, I was delighted to be invited to attend the ‘topping out’ ceremony in the New Learning Hub on our Senior Campus. The practice of ‘topping out’ a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious rite of placing a tree atop a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits displaced in its construction. As part of the event, a small tree was placed on the rooftop and we were then given an opportunity to see some of the internal work that is happening on the Visual Arts and Design and Technology level. As we went from floor to floor up on to the roof space, I was awestruck by the sheer scale of this new student learning hub, scheduled for occupancy in mid-2020. The contemporary educational facilities will truly transform our Senior Campus and our current Junior School students will enjoy these learning spaces in years to come.

Cashless Canteen from Term 4

As previously communicated last term, both our Junior and Senior Campus Canteens have been moving towards being cashless operations this year and will no longer take cash from Term 4. After the successful introduction of Flexischools last year, we now have very little incidental sales at our Junior Campus Canteen. The change has improved efficiencies and enabled our Canteen staff to spend more time on other aspects of their catering roles and has given them greater visibility on volumes of products being sold which has in turn, helped reduced food wastage as we have been able to collate data on sales.

As well as Flexischools, another option for families with Junior School students, which I know some students are using already, is to acquire a prepaid debit card such as Spriggy, which may also give students the opportunity to learn important budgeting skills.

Kids’ Cancer Project

Last Friday, we were delighted to support Yr 5 girls Stella Cunningham, Zoe Hicks, Chloe Hitchens and Charlie Hoskin, in their fundraiser for the Kids’ Cancer Project Fundraiser. The girls have been active fundraisers for this charity in recent times and we were delighted to raise a total amount of $774.70 through merchandise and raffle sales. This fantastic amount will support the charity’s focus on medical research and the girls have certainly raised awareness of this important cause in the Childhood Cancer Awareness of September. Well done on making a difference again, girls.

Junior School Lost Property

Please note that any unnamed items not collected by the end of term will be passed on to the next Second Hand Uniform Sale. Mrs Fairfax and Miss Wickham have repatriated a significant amount of lost property (named and unnamed) but there are still a number of items that have been in our Junior School Lost Property section for a lot of this term. Our lost property is located at the bottom of the Yr 3 stairwell in the Parkes Building should you or your child be on the hunt for missing items.

Reminder

Please be reminded that Tuesday Cocurricular Clubs and our Maths and English peer support groups (Wednesdays) do not take place next week. All Music practices do continue as do after school Extra Curricular Performing Arts activities.

Gastroenteritis

As you may be aware viral gastroenteritis is circulating at elevated levels in the community, and there is an on-going risk of outbreaks in Child Education and Care Services. Gastroenteritis is commonly caused by viral infections resulting in vomiting and diarrhoea. The viruses are easily spread from person to person. Thorough washing of hands with soap and running water are vital to prevent spread. Please keep your child at home if they have any of the above symptoms. This assists us in keeping other children and staff well. Please clean your hands with hand sanitiser when entering and leaving Redlands House. Could we please also ask that you advise the School if your child falls ill, this will allow us to inform other families and the relevant authorities. Thank you for your close attention to this.

Optional Term 4 Uniform for Transition Gold Students

Team Formation

This week saw the announcement of many summer sport teams for 2019/2020 season. Selection trials can be an anxious period for many students but they are a necessary part of sport to ensure students are selected into the right team for their development at the right time. For many people the emotions of selection can come not from what team they were selected in, but what team their peers or friends were selected in. It is a natural response for people to compare themselves to those people around them, in many cases we are our own worst critics in this regard. As individuals we often apply a range of bias towards our own ability and the ability of others. It is this bias which creates the greatest barrier when forming teams. A team is a group of people linked to a common purpose. It is forming this team to establish and achieve the purpose that is difficult and is why it is called teamWORK, it requires exactly that to achieve success. Building a strong culture of teamwork is one of the most important and influential things our coaches can do at Redlands. Key to a majority of the enjoyment students derive from sport comes from the relationships they form and the shared experiences they have as a team.

The Tuckman model of the stages of group development, first published by Bruce Wayne Tuckman 1965, outlines the dynamics of a team and the stages of development a team will go through on the journey towards quality results and it is still relevant today.

Accessed 10/1/2014, http://topazsmartd.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/63.jpg

Utilising models, such as the one above, is just one way we can instil a sense of self awareness about our students and the teams and relationships they form within our sport programs. The skill of team learning from each other is easy, however getting teams to learn for each other is teamwork. This is one of the greatest traits we can develop in our students to ensure they become better athletes and better people.

“Individual commitment to a group effort – that’s what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilisation work.” Vince Lombardi (3 x NFL winning coach. The NFL Super Bowl Trophy is now named in his honour).

Rowing

Our near record number of rowers have started the season well. There has been a noticeable increase in focus from previous years with our experienced year levels along with our first year rowers taking to the sport very quickly! As always, students can join the Rowing program at any stage of their schooling.

This Saturday 21 September from 12.00 – 1.30pm, the Friends of Rowing will be hosting the season launch and boat naming BBQ at Mosman Rowing Club. All families are welcome and encouraged to attend. We will be acknowledging some people who have made a significant contribution to the program during our boat naming ceremony.

Our Friends of Rowing would love to hear from any parents who would be able to volunteer with setup, working the BBQ or any other duties for this event. Can you please email Sabrina Pauling at sabrina.pauling@gmail.com

Junior Sport

Spring Challenge AFL

Our Spring Challenge AFL boys played two matches against Knox last Friday night and were a real force to be reckoned with, taking both matches convincingly. Our whole team showed great sportsmanship, jumping in to help the opposition when there were players short and more often than not being the best player on the opposing team. We’ve been unable to muster an opponent for this Friday and so our Spring Challenge has come to an early end. Though, given the current weather, the likelihood of any games going ahead in this final week is pretty slender.

Girls AFL finished off their season with a series of tight tussles at Pymble last Saturday. Watching the girls from all of our three teams embrace the challenge of a new sport has been a real insight. Despite going down to some very tough Abbotsleigh girls, our teams were all right into it, tackling, smothering and bumping their way into every contest.

NSWCIS Athletics Championships

Joel Daily (Yr 5) has continued to dominate even at the next level, winning the 100m and Long Jump at the NSWCIS Championships last Thursday. Joel’s 14.07s 100m is rapid and will hold him in good stead whilst representing NSWCIS at the PSSA State Championships. Joel jumped his personal best a 4.64m, despite running between events in a heavy program.

Joels isn’t the only Redlands athlete to be heading to the NSW Championships. Ashley Corn and Jeffrey and Daniel Benoleil also qualified for the State Championships along with Joel in the Jnr Boys 4 x 100m relay. The boys ran great races and their 56.94s 4x 100m is an exceptional time. The boys put together some of the cleanest changes I’ve seen from a Redlands relay team and showed plenty of heart when tested at this high calibre.

Basketball

Before school Basketball training is available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7.15am in Dunnet Hall. Players from any grade and mixed or girls Basketball are welcome to attend.

Concert Band Open Rehearsal Concert

Last Wednesday the Music Department, supported by the FOM Committee, hosted our first Concert Band Open Rehearsal, where parents were provided with the opportunity to see their children in their rehearsals. It was a highly successful afternoon and parents evidently appreciated the opportunity to observe both the Intermediate and Advanced Concert Bands present, finding it a very valuable and enjoyable experience. Here are some comments that parents have shared with us over the past week.

“…we were especially impressed with the standard of performance – it reinforced to us the high quality of the Music program at Redlands…”

“…we found the whole process very interesting and appreciated the opportunity to observe rehearsals in action…”

“… this afternoon highlighted what the Intermediate students can aspire to and work towards and potentially enjoy in the coming years…”

Thanks to MIC of Bands Ms Hilary Luck for supporting this afternoon and Lead Conductor Mr Mathew Owen in his organisation role, Mr Cameron Harker for his humorous manner with the parents and all Music tutors who work in this program each week.

Yr 7 Incursion

Last week, Yr 7 Students participated in Rhythm Works, a Musica Viva incursion held in the Edwards Auditorium, where students participated in an educational interactive performance designed to foster creativity, community spirit and connection. As a duo, Rhythm Works demonstrated to students how to create visual images using a range of instruments including African djembes, marimbas, electronic loop machines and wearable instruments made out of PVC pipe. As part of this interactive show, students were introduced to simple, readily available software that quickly enables them to loop a basic rhythm track and add layers of complexity with tuned, un-tuned percussion, vocal parts and unconventional sound sources. This experience supports their Term 3 Unit Lights, Camera, Action where learning experiences have seen students produce Music videos by recording unconventional sound sources and creating their own piece of Electronic Dance Music.

Rock in the Quad

In Term 4, students enrolled in the Redlands Rock Band program will be presenting two lunchtime concerts to showcase their developing skills as contemporary musicians. Please mark these concert dates in your diaries.

  • Junior Campus Rock in the Quad (Yrs 5-6 Bands) – Tuesday 29 October
  • Senior Campus Rock in the Garden (Yrs 7-12 Bands) – Thursday 28 November
Junior and Senior Music Festival Footage

Over the coming week, all parents of students involved in the Redlands Music Festivals this year will receive a link and password to footage of the 2019 Junior and Senior Music Festivals. A fee of $10 will be billed to each family for access to these concerts.

Redlands Composition Competition

Earlier this year, the Music Department announced the second instalment of the Redlands Music Composition Competition, in recognising the creative talents of students who compose their own music. This creative opportunity was designed for any aspiring young composer in Yrs 7-12 who is currently enrolled in the either the Academic Music program, the Cocurricular Music Ensembles program or the Extra Subjects program. Last year the Department appointed talented young Australian composer and Redlander Greta Argyropoulos (Class of 2017) as the ambassador in launching this creative initiative and in mentoring the students. This year, we are pleased to announce that our mentor for this project will be recent graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium (Composition) Mr Solomon Frank (Redlander Class of 2013).

A meeting has been scheduled for Friday 20 September at 1.00pm in the Upper Music Gallery of the Music Centre to discuss the next stage in the process and work through the required production matrix in preparation for the recording stage throughout Term 4.
