Year 7
House Debating Competition – Roseby Vs McDouall
Participating in a secondary school debating competition offers Yr 7 students a unique opportunity to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills. The competition is structured across Term 3, beginning with the organisation of Year 11 coaches and the selection of teams. Coaching sessions, which take place during lunchtimes, help students prepare for the debate topics, which are revealed in Week 4B. The competition is structured into heats, where houses face off, culminating in a final during Week 9A. Debates are held in the Edwards Auditorium from 10:35-11:05, with each speaker having 2 ½ minutes to present their arguments, followed by a brief adjudication.
The focus is on the persuasiveness of the arguments rather than just delivery, making it essential for speakers to clearly define the terms of the debate, offer strong rebuttals, and provide detailed examples to support their case. Preparation for the debates includes both research and practice sessions, allowing students ample time to develop and refine their arguments.
Overall, the competition fosters a collaborative environment where students can engage in meaningful discussions and hone their debating skills in a supportive setting.
This Week’s Y7 Topic: That in Australia it should be illegal for owners to let their pet cats leave their home or property.
Well done to the following students in McDouall, Jenna Forrest, Joao Segorbe, Mark Rolfe, Ethan Wei, Feargal Lambert, Robert Hamori, Emilio Dressler.
Well done to the following students in Roseby, Charlie Benfield, Sophie Wong, Sammy Halliday.
Sport
Congratulations to all students for completing their Winter Sport. We hope you all look forward to the Summer Season.
Year 6 Come to Lunch
It was wonderful to meet some Yr 6 students who will be starting at Redlands next year. We even had some siblings come across for lunch and to have a look around the Senior School Campus. We look forward to welcoming you next year.
Yr 7 Technology Creations
Yr 7 students have been busy making their Cam Toys over the last few weeks. A “Cam Toy” is a small mechanical toy that moves in a fun way when you turn a handle. Inside the toy, there’s a special piece called a “cam” that helps change the turning motion into a different kind of movement, like making a figure jump up and down or wave its arms. These toys are great for learning how things move and work!
Well done Yr 7!
Reminder About Phones
We would like to remind parents of our school’s policy regarding student phones to ensure a focused and distraction free learning environment.
For students in Years 7-10, phones must be kept in lockers at all times during the school day. If a student needs to contact home, they should visit the SSC to make a call from the front desk.
Teachers at the school are instructed to enforce this policy by confiscating phones and delivering them to the Senior School Office, should they be found to be used during the school day.
This policy is designed to support a productive and respectful learning environment for all students.
Yr 12 Legacy Gift Fundraiser – Non-School Dress Day Friday 30 August
To celebrate our time at Redlands, and to thank the School for its support, encouragement and opportunities that are offered to us, we have decided to support the means-tested Coralie Amos Scholarship Appeal. This scholarship provides an opportunity for a Redlands education to a student who may otherwise be unable to attend the School.
The Aim for this day is to raise money and to reflect on our experiences that we have been so fortunate to have at Redlands. As such we would love to be able to support a student so that they will be able to attend Redlands as well.
Fundraising will be conducted through a Non-school dress day this Friday 30 August with a gold coin donation at the gates in the morning.
Non-dress Day Theme: Favourite part of Redlands – showcase somewhere that you shine! You can wear a Sport jersey, club t-shirt, drama outfit or your house colours to celebrate why you love Redlands.
Yr 12 will be selling water bottles and keychains at Lunch in the Fahl Garden and Liggins Quad as well as asking students to share why they love Redlands. All proceeds will be going to the scholarship fund.
Thank you for joining the 2024 Cohort in their efforts. Thank you for your support.
