Issue 26 2024 Term 3 Week 6 - 29 Aug 2024

From the Principal

We often talk about our positive school spirit here at Redlands and over the past week I have been fortunate to see it shining through in so many different ways.

Last Friday evening was the Secondary School Music Awards with performances from a multitude of ensembles, as well as individual recognitions for students across Years 7-12. While the quality of the music was of its usual highest standard, what I enjoyed most on the evening was the support fellow students gave each other (usually through loud and boisterous cheering) when one of their fellow musicians was recognised for an individual award.

On Saturday many Secondary School Sports teams were competing in the Independent Sporting Association finals across various venues. I attended Netball, Hockey and Girls Football matches and while there were mixed results across the various matches, what struck me most was how all of our students and teams displayed authentic pride for Redlands when competing for their School on the day.

Yesterday evening was the Visual Arts Exhibition in Redlands Hall and students from Years 3-11 had their artworks on display alongside the HSC Visual Arts Major Works from our Year 12 HSC students. Students, staff, parents and alumni were all in attendance to view the artworks and we were fortunate to have renowned architect and contemporary painter, Susan Rothwell AM (Redlander, 1965) to speak to those in attendance and officially open the exhibition. Again, what struck me most was support displayed by fellow Year 12 students who did not have any works on display but who wanted to celebrate their friends’ exhibition of their HSC Major Works.

I continue to be so proud of the positive and authentic school spirit displayed across Redlands in so many different ways.

Earlier this term, Chair of the Board of Directors, Professor Glenn Wightwick, and I visited John Lang OAM and his daughter Kerry Farmer (Redlander 1975) to show our appreciation for his efforts, in partnership with fellow Redlands Trustees John Roberts and Bruce Adams, in developing the business plan in 1976 which saved the School from closure due to the financial collapse of the SCEGGS network of five schools. Professor Wightwick and I truly appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the evolution of the School in the late 20th century and also see the pride that both John and Kerry still have in Redlands.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to join the Redlands Football community last week at their end of season awards ceremony. This event, along with many others at this time of year, mark the culmination of the  extraordinary efforts of our students, coaches, managers, parents and Friends of Groups (FoGs) through our seasonal cocurricular programs. We are so grateful for our active and passionate parents who continue to lead and support these educational, cultural and sporting programs through our various FoGs.

Being part of a FoG enables parents and carers to support the building of a strong and positive sense of school community through:

  1. Connection – by forming a supportive network that welcomes new members to the activity.
  2. Support – by undertaking encouraging energetic and respectful support (of all participants) at events and matches, organising social activities through the year and an annual celebration dinner.
  3. Assistance – many activities require active assistance such as timekeeping or scoring, assistant refereeing or marshalling or making uniforms, costumes, props or scenery.

FoGs have been established for Basketball, Drama, Football, Hockey, Music, Dance, Netball, Rowing, Rugby, Sailing, Snowsports and Touch Football. Our FoGs, led through the Redlands Parent and Friends Association, continue to explore and deliver ways to keep our community connected, included and supported.  Further information on upcoming activities and events, including end of season celebrations and award presentations, can be found here.

Clean pre-loved uniforms can now be donated through the Uniform Shop for the upcoming Second Uniform Sale that will take place on Friday 13 September. This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund, Further details can be found in the RPFA.

On Monday 2 September we look forward to hosting our Junior, Prep and Redlands House Dads at our Junior Campus Father’s Day celebrations. Prep and Junior School Dads will be welcomed with coffee in the Piazza from 7.45am, followed by classroom visits.  Bookings for this always special event can be made here. Redlands House is celebrating with open classrooms from 8.30am where families can visit and share some time with our youngest students.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Susan Rothwell AM, Redlander 1965

We were greatly honoured to welcome Susan Rothwell AM, Redlander from the Class of 1965 and Chair at the National Art School in Sydney to open our extraordinary Student Art Exhibition yesterday at Redlands Hall.  This showcase of works across a variety of mediums by students from Year 3 to Year 12 HSC was also of interest to many alumni who attended from the Class of 1964 to the most recent era. Congratulations to our students, and also Mark Harpley, Coordinator of Visual Arts and Jeslyne Fung Year 12 HSC Visual Arts teacher. What an wonderful celebration of our Visual Arts program and opportunity for our community to see this amazing work!

Redlands Parents and Friends

The birthday party has shifted into high gear after smashing the Giving Day fundraising goal with $520,000 donated for the High Country Campus, and further support for the Coralie Amos OAM Scholarship Appeal. The RPFA proudly contributed to this awesome effort as one of the matching contributors. Thank you to all who donated, every dollar counted!

Let’s keep the party alive with only seven weeks to go before the Festival of Redlands launches! Inspired by the best ever Olympics results and the love you have all shown for our school on the Giving Day, the Festival will tap into that competitive spirit with everyone participating in the amazing activities on offer generating House points!! The winning House will take out the inaugural Festival Trophy!

Each house will have its own marquee to decorate and all members of the community are encouraged to join in the fun by dressing in House colours on the day.

How will it work? Students, parents, alumni and teachers’ attendance and participation in sport games, competitions and other activities will earn points that will be attributed to their House. For parents, that House will be determined by your child’s House group.

****More breaking news, to inspire Junior School House spirit we will be bringing back the super successful student hand print cutouts with birthday messages that will make up the House banners on the day of the Festival.

Book Club

The Redlands Book Club is a group of Redlands parents – past and present – who share a love of reading. New members are always welcome! The Book Club meets twice each school term to discuss a book, rotating among members’ homes. Occasionally, outings are also organised to events, movies or shows that are tied in with books. If you would like to join Book Club, or simply want to know more, please contact Monica or Sabiha.

We had a great meeting at The Oaks last week where we discussed The Women by Kristin Hannah (see photo below) and welcomed two new members.

Our next meeting is Wednesday 11th September at 10:30am, when we will be discussing The Other Side of Beautiful by Kim Lock.

For those who like to plan ahead, our October book will be Safe Haven by Shankari Chandran. Date TBC, but likely to be the week of 21st or 28th October.

We are on the hunt for a meeting spot for our next meeting. Please contact Monica or Sabiha if you’re able to host.

Kids Giving Back

Kids Giving Back is hosting a mega cooking marathon on 22 September. As the children prepare meals for Sydneysiders in need, they can have fun with friends and bring to life their school values of moral courage and compassion. Head of Secondary School

Community Connection is so important to us all at Redlands. We’re privileged to belong to a large diverse school with many opportunities. Our students, big and small, value any opportunity to gather and socialise with each other and over the past week, the Secondary School has initiated Connection Experiences with our Year 6 students, ahead of them joining us in 2025. The Assistant Dean of Students, Ms Sarah Matthews, has led this initiative, well supported by the Junior School staff, who are all keen to ensure a smooth transition from Junior to Secondary School.

After gathering feedback from families and students, we developed a series of initiatives to help Year 6 students connect with current Secondary students, familiarise themselves with the Senior Campus, and build confidence in navigating their new environment. First off, a series of Connection Sessions took place in the Arnold Library on the Junior Campus, as part of a broader effort to ensure a smooth and confident Secondary School transition for our younger students. The Connection Experiences are a key part of this initiative, offering a “soft start” for the Year 6 students. Year 6 students were grouped with Year 10 mentors in small, relaxed settings. The activities included fun connection games designed to help the younger students begin building relationships with their older peers.

Our Year 10 students were thrilled to take on this leadership role as peer mentors, and their enthusiasm was evident as they guided and supported the Year 6 students. This initiative not only benefits the Year 6 students but also provides our Year 10s with a valuable opportunity to develop leadership skills and contribute positively to our school community.

Then this week, Year 6 students visited the Senior Campus to have lunch with their Year 10 mentors on the Fahl Garden. Students learned how to use the canteen, where the bathrooms are located, how the secondary students utilise the various play areas and where they can play handball.  Year 6 experienced the campus in a quieter moment during Period 4 and then also got to see how it felt when the older students were released for lunchtime. As well as chatting with students and finding out about their experience of Year 6, hear stories about their family and friends, the most joyful moment was watching older siblings from the Secondary School come and find their younger brother or sister on the Fahl Garden. There were lots of smiles. Connection success!

This Week and Next…

It was a fantastic opening night to the Visual Art Showcase last evening in Redlands Hall. Art works from Year 3 to Year 12 (HSC) were exhibited and visited by a large number of visitors. A huge congratulations to all students whose work was exhibited and in particular to our fabulous HSC students who can breathe a sigh of relief that one significant part of their HSC experience is successfully now behind them. It was a joy to move around the artistic space, be wowed with talent and beauty and hear from Year 12 students about their inspirations and the process of meaning making. A sincere thank you to our Visual Arts Department for their care and guidance of students and for a fabulous exhibition. Over the coming weeks there are more events taking place that feature the skills and talents of our students, and in particular  our departing Year 12 students. If you can find the time to come along and celebrate with these students, they’d appreciate it. Details can be found on Pulse.

Basic Expectations for All Secondary Students

As we move through the final weeks of Term 3 and navigate the various learning activities and events taking place, it is important to get the little things right and always hold ourselves to the highest expectations. In the past week we have had to talk to students of all ages in the Secondary School about getting the little things right – their uniform, the respect of the collective spaces in our school and their mobile phones. I have noted a few basic expectations below and we appreciate your support as we move through our student management processes and hold students to account, in line with our School values of responsibility and respect.

  • Students need to wear their uniform to and from school, except on Thursdays
  • One small earring in each lower lobe is permitted only
  • Shirts need to be tucked in if wearing long trousers
  • Students are required to pick up their rubbish at recess and lunch and dispose of it in a bin
  • Mobile phones are to be safely stored in lockers for all students from Year 7 to 10 – parents are requested to please refrain from texting and calling their child during the school day. If there is an emergency or a message that needs passing on, then please contact the Secondary School office on 02 9908 6407

If students breach these basic expectations, they will receive a uniform demerit which may result in a detention. Jewellery and phones will be confiscated. Repeated breaches will lead to escalated consequences. We are a highly reputable independent school and as such we expect our students to attend school every day, be punctual to school and class and to always present themselves in a respectful manner – in behaviour and appearance.

The Warm Days…

As the days grow warmer and given that not all students are currently wearing the new uniform, which affords greater flexibility, students wearing the old uniform may choose to wear their summer uniform to school on very hot days. Before allowing your child to wear this please ask them to try it on to ensure:

  • The uniform still fits and does not need to be taken down – dresses and pants
  • The uniform is clean and ironed – especially the girls’ seersucker dress

Students with short pants and short dresses will be asked to adjust them via a formal communication home to the parents.

For the final Year 12 Formal Farewell Assembly held on the final Wednesday of term, all students in the Secondary School will be required to wear blazers.

Legacy Gift

This year, the graduating class of 2024 has decided to leave our legacy by raising money for the means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund. The scholarship provides an opportunity for a Redlands education to a student who may otherwise be unable to attend the School. We want to share the support, encouragement and opportunities that Redlands has provided us.

If you haven’t yet supported by purchasing one of these legacy gift packs, please do. This is their final week and they are looking to sell as many gift packs as possible to raise funds for the Scholarship Fund. You can purchase the gift packs by visiting here. Products are delivered to your child’s class/tutor or by post.

Shine Dress Day Friday 30 August

A reminder too for the Secondary School that this Friday 30 August students may wear either their school uniform or a representation of where they shine at Redlands. Year 12 are asking students to wear something that represents where they shine at Redlands (or their House Colours). If students wish to engage in this event, they are to make a gold coin donation towards the Legacy Fund. Donations will be collected at the gates in the morning. Drink bottles, key rings and icy poles will be sold at lunchtime.

Exciting New Addition to Our Rooftop: Introduction of a Bee Colony

Tuesday, marked a buzzing milestone for our Beekeeping Club where the Redlands BeeKeeping Club introduced a brand-new bee colony to the rooftop apiary! This exciting event provided students with a unique opportunity to witness the fascinating process of establishing a bee colony firsthand.

During Tuesday’s event, students gathered on the rooftop to observe as the new bee colony was carefully transferred into their hive. The process began with a brief introduction to the hive structure and the essential role bees play in pollination and maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Next, students watched as our experienced beekeepers gently placed the bee frames, filled with bees, into the hive. They explained each step of the process, from ensuring the queen bee was safely introduced to monitoring the worker bees’ behavior as they acclimated to their new home. Students were also shown how to handle bees safely and respectfully, fostering an appreciation for these vital pollinators. It was a truly hands-on experience that allowed everyone to get up close and personal with the bees while learning about the intricate workings of a bee colony.

Thank you to Sustainability Manager Kimberlee Chipper for organising this fantastic, interactive event.

The Beekeeping Club will continue to meet next Tuesday at lunchtime on the rooftop, where students will get the exciting opportunity to create Beeswax Candles. Whether your child is a seasoned beekeeper or just curious to learn more, we invite them to join the BeeKeeping Club for more bee-related activities and education.

Happy Beekeeping!

Service

Service Learning and Social Engagement takes many forms. Often, it is about realising a need and meeting it in a genuine, real and proactive way. Sometimes, it is about supporting an established cause, giving our time, energy and finances to something that we believe will make a difference to someone else and that’s what a group of dedicated Yr 12 students, the “Legacy Team,” have been doing this year. This team have been meeting regularly to discuss what they can do to fundraise money to contribute to the means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund.

Sustainability

Banish and BRAD Initiative

On Tuesday, a few of us had the exciting opportunity to participate in an environmental workshop hosted by Banish, a leading organisation in waste reduction and recycling. Banish is known for its BRAD initiative (Banish Recycling and Disposal Program) which focuses on recycling hard-to-recycle items such as blister packs and especially providing reliable information and accessible methods for reducing waste.

The following students attended the workshop:

Conor Petersen (Yr 12), Tara Gold (Yr 12), Emilie Leroux (Yr 12), Bianca Goggin (Yr 12), Eshan Eliatamby (Yr 11), Joshua Farrant (Yr 11), Freya Carroll (Yr 8), Aimee Kang (Yr 8),  Vivienne Matthews (Yr 8), Mackenzie Willis (Yr 8)

When we arrived at the Banish Sustainability Hub, we began by sorting through the items we had recycled at Redlands during Greenlands Week. This allowed us to understand the types of materials that we as a school produced the most (we had over 3 kilograms of bottle top lids!), and to see which materials that BRAD could and couldn’t recycle. Then, we were tasked to separate plastic bottle lids by different types of plastics (4 being the softest, 2 and then 5) and by colour. Once we had sorted them, the bottle lids were shredded by a machine for three rounds to produce small shards of the plastic, which could then be used to create usable items, such as pens, pot plants, and even carabiners. We had the privilege of making our own pens from the plastic, a process which involved another small machine in which the plastic shards were put and then using a handle, carefully pushed through a heater which melted it down and then into a mould for the type of item we were creating. This whole hands-on experience was very enriching, and for a lot of us was very important and calming. We found from a discussion at the end of the excursion that many young people suffer from eco-anxiety, and that things such as taking action and reading positive news stories could reassure us that we are doing what we can to help the environment.

Brainstorming Session and Ideas for Future Initiatives

After the more hands-on activities, we participated in a brainstorming session to discuss future initiatives both within our own school and to provide feedback on potential Banish educational programs and work with schools. Here are some of our ideas:

  1. Permanent BRAD Collection Station – We propose visible, transparent recycling stations (for hard-to-recycle items) in the school to promote accountability and so we can track the progress of our impact. There could be a competitive element to this as well, such as the house who is able to collect the most items wins points or a pizza lunch.
  2. Service Program Integration – To make recycling activities part of the school services provided, more accessible for students to participate directly in and work towards better waste management at our school. Especially as a more specific area within the environment and sustainability service already, considering waste is a key challenge for us as a school. Additionally, this would count for CAS and DOE hours.
  3. Banish Workshops in Schools and Real-World Application – Banish collaboration with corporate companies to task students with challenges to solve and provide real-world applications. We also discussed having representation of speakers and activities in different areas such as the textile industry, agricultural industry, etc. Both of these ideas are important because they can show students the broad-reaching nature of environmental issues and how they infiltrate all areas of life.

How you can Get Involved with BRAD

  • Get collecting! Wait until you’ve got enough products to fill an old shoe box or compostable satchel. Once you do, it’s time to get recycling.
  • Throw your products into an old box or satchel with a piece of paper with your full name and email address on it.
  • Send it to:

Banish
Gadigal Land
Shop 18/19, Henry Deane Plaza
2 Lee Street
Haymarket 2000 NSW

  • When they receive your package you will be sent a confirmation email and a $15 voucher to spend online.
  • There are also volunteering opportunities to help sort items at Banish – see their website for more details

Sailing Captain Highlight: Alissandra Braden

Alissandra has been invited to join the National Olympic Pathway Screening and Training camp for a new type of boat (49erFX), taking place in Lake Macquarie during Week 6. She was also invited to join the National Pre-Emerging Olympic Pathway Squad for 2024/25 which is a step up from the previous squad she was in for the past few seasons.

As Alissandra has been heavily involved in sailing throughout her entire schooling, see her responses to what she will remember most and what she has learned about herself while managing the HSC.

What is your proudest achievement?

It’s a close call between being the 2024 Sailing Captain and being offered a spot by the Australian Olympic Committee as the reserve sailor for the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.

What have you learned about yourself through sailing?

There are so many things in life that you can control. However, there will always be situations which are just out of your hands. You can’t manage what scenarios happen to you, but you can be proactive, not reactive in how you respond. Also- life is constantly changing (much like the wind) so you can never get too comfortable in where you are and you must always have the adaptability to respond to change.

What are your future goals?

I’m currently in a transition between the ILCA 6 (Women’s Olympic dinghy) and the 470 (mixed Olympic dinghy) so my short-term goal is to make the top 10 at the next 470 nationals and long-term goal is to compete in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

How have you managed sailing with the HSC?

Since we started Year 11, everyone said to keep up all my sailing commitments and not to loose sight of my goals. For me, I knew I’d have to cut back sailing a bit in the lead up to exams. However, I needed to continue training. So, I made a plan each week and managed to fit in study, gym and sailing sessions to ensure I was making the most out of each day and not wasting valuable time.

Preliminary Exams

As you approach your upcoming Preliminary Exams, it’s essential to reflect on the sustained effort and commitment that has brought you to this point. These exams are not just an assessment of content; they represent a crucial opportunity to refine your skills, enhance your study techniques and identify strategies that will set you up for success in Year 12. Your results are just one part of a much broader journey—what truly matters is how you use this experience to grow and develop as a learner. Approach the exams with confidence, knowing that your preparation and resilience will guide you through. This is your chance to consolidate all you’ve learned and build a strong foundation for the year ahead.

Key information and reminders:

  • Arrival time (15 mins prior)
  • Exams will be held on Level 4 of the Learning Hub
  • You must arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time of each exam
  • You are only required at school for your exams; you should only come into school just before an exam and leave immediately after. If you have two exams on the same day, you can go to the library between them
  • You are not permitted to study on Levels 2 or 3 of the Learning Hub at any time – noise travels up to Level 4 and disrupts exams
  • No phones or smart watches in exam rooms
  • Pencil cases and water bottles must be clear, or they will not be allowed in
  • No sport uniform
  • Exams are not a reason not to attend other commitments such as sport – you are expected to continue with these activities that take place before and after school
  • If you are running late, the exam will start without you. If you are going to be late, you must email Mrs Benjamin/ Mr Taylor, Ms Vale and the absence email to alert the School
  • If you cannot take an exam, you must contact Mrs Benjamin/ Mr Taylor, Ms Vale and the absence email as early as possible on the day of the exam. You must then follow the illness and misadventure procedure on the day of the exam affected and attach a medical certificate that clearly states why you could not complete an exam (‘unfit for school or study’ won’t cut it). Without this, you will receive 0 for each exam missed. This process is not optional.
  • You cannot apply for illness and misadventure on the day or days after an exam that you have missed. It has to be on the day.
  • If you attempt an exam whilst unwell, and you feel your performance has been impacted, you should follow the same procedure: I&M form and medical certificate.
  • All exams missed will be rescheduled within the exam block.

House Debating

The topics have been set; the teams have been chosen. Who will reign victorious this year in House Debating?

On Monday McDouall and Roseby took their first step down that path, with Roseby victorious! McDouall and Roseby debated a very contemporary and recently well-discussed topic, that convicted felons should not be allowed to participate in the Olympics. It was a close affair, with both teams offering up valuable arguments but, in a debate that revolved around three primary clashes, Roseby were able to take the lead in two of three, ultimately winning the debate.

Reminder About Phones

We would like to remind parents of our school’s policy regarding student phones to ensure a focused and distraction free learning environment.

For students in Years 7-10, phones must be kept in lockers at all times during the school day. If a student needs to contact home, they should visit the SSC to make a call from the front desk.

Teachers at the school are instructed to enforce this policy by confiscating phones and delivering them to the Senior School Office, should they be found to be used during the school day.

This policy is designed to support a productive and respectful learning environment for all students.

Year 8

Week 6 – Service and Gratitude

This term our focus in Yr 8 has been firmly on Service. After our cohort’s role in supporting the Jeans for Genes day bake sale earlier in the term, each Tutor group has been working on developing and enacting small scale service projects across the School. We have a range of projects being managed by Tutor groups including:

  • supporting the return of lost property in the School
  • assisting in keeping our locker area and the Undercroft free of rubbish
  • helping IT in managing school devices
  • helping to recycle cans across the School
  • assisting the Library in covering new and old books
  • knitting squares to make pouches for orphaned joeys
  • producing cards for the local aged care facility at Bougainvillea
  • and more!

It has been a valuable process, not just engaging in Service to show our gratitude for the wonderful school we are fortunate enough to be in, but also in appreciating the planning and logistics behind getting a valuable service project off the ground. Students are learning a great deal, which they will be able to take with them into future years and personal endeavours, viewing the world through a lens of recognising their own privilege and seeking to help others where they can.

As part of this process, we were also lucky enough to bring on board a variety of Yr 11 students who have started acting as mentors for each Tutor group, offering them advice and guidance in how to engage in valuable service. Our Yr 11 students, under the guidance of their wonderful Year Advisor, Ms Vale, have built a beautiful culture of Service and we greatly appreciate the students who are offering their time to help our Yr 8 cohort build their own culture of Service and gratitude.

A huge thank you to our Assistant Year Advisor, Ms Wang, who has taken the lion’s share in coordinating this unit on Service, working with various staff across the School to build opportunities for our students to contribute to the Redlands community. Thank you also to our Tutors who have helped and continue to help facilitate the experience for their Tutor groups, guiding them in planning and implementing their Service projects.

Service in Athens

Each Year Assembly this term, I have been highlighting significant Service experiences that students have been involved in outside of the school. On Monday, I shared with the cohort that over the recent mid-year break, Christos travelled to Greece to connect with family and friends, but also to support a charity organisation called Boroume. Boroume started very small, when the founders saved 12 unsold cheese pies (tiropites) from being discarded by a bakery, so they could offer them to a soup kitchen. It is now a well-known food distribution organisation and movement throughout Greece who save more than 24,000 portions of food every day across Greece.

Christos and his sister volunteered with Boroume to collect unsold and excess produce from a local farmer’s market (in 37-degree heat!) to ensure such food did not go to waste as landfill. Christos and his sister helped to fill an entire van as they collected more eggplants and carrots than they had ever seen before, amongst other vegetables and fruits. The produce was then delivered to a local charity for their use in meals and support packages for families in need. The weekly collection from this farmer’s market saves the charity 20,000 euros a year! You can learn more about Boroume HERE.

It is wonderful to see students in our year group thinking beyond themselves and finding opportunities like this to help others in need. Well done Christos!

House Debating

The topics have been set; the teams have been chosen. Who will reign victorious this year in House Debating? McDouall took the glory last year, but can they do it again this year?

Well, on Wednesday McDouall indeed took the first step down that path, defeating Roseby in our first round of House Debating. McDouall and Roseby debated a very contemporary and recently well-discussed topic, that breakdancing (or breaking) should continue to be an Olympic sport. It was a close affair, with both teams offering up valuable arguments but, in a debate that revolved around three primary clashes, McDouall were able to take the lead in two of three, ultimately winning the debate.

Thank you to Yr 12 student, Annie Zhang who adjudicated the debate and a huge thank you to Ms Beggs who has coordinated the competition.

Good luck to Cowper and Dumolo House representatives who will debate next week on the topic that in NSW the age of criminal liability should be raised from 10 to 16. I look forward to seeing the interesting legal and social arguments each group will produce.

Reminder about Phones

Recently, we have started to see phone usage creeping back into some students’ school routine and, in the interests of supporting their academic engagement and in-person social interactions, this is something we strongly want to restrain. I would like to remind everyone of our School’s policy regarding student phones to ensure a focused and distraction-free learning environment.

For students in Years 7-10, phones must be kept in lockers at all times during the school day. If a student needs to contact home, they should visit the SSC to make a call from the front desk.

Teachers at the School are instructed to enforce this policy by confiscating phones and delivering them to me, as the Year Advisor, should they be found to be used inappropriately. We are confident that with timely reminders, students can develop management strategies to ensure they are not held hostage to the temptations of phone use during the school day. This policy is designed to support a productive and respectful learning environment for all students.

Year 8 Geography Excursion Reminder

Tomorrow, Yr 8 have the great opportunity to visit Manly Dam, an absolutely beautiful location, as part of their Geography course study. Please take note of the information below so that everyone knows where to be and what to bring to have the best day!

Students will be met at the Top Terraces at 8:20am by their teacher to get their name marked off before boarding buses. Students are to wear PE uniform and closed shoes that you don’t mind getting wet (please feel free bring a change of socks and shoes that you can put on before heading back to school!).

Additionally, make sure you bring:

  • small rucksack for carrying things (no school bags)
  • pen / pencil
  • clipboard
  • hat
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • water bottle filled with water
  • recess and lunch (there are no shops nearby)
  • closed shoes
  • medication (as necessary – for instance, asthma puffer, Epipen, etc…)

Year 7

House Debating Competition – Roseby Vs McDouall

Participating in a secondary school debating competition offers Yr 7 students a unique opportunity to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills. The competition is structured across Term 3, beginning with the organisation of Year 11 coaches and the selection of teams. Coaching sessions, which take place during lunchtimes, help students prepare for the debate topics, which are revealed in Week 4B. The competition is structured into heats, where houses face off, culminating in a final during Week 9A. Debates are held in the Edwards Auditorium from 10:35-11:05, with each speaker having 2 ½ minutes to present their arguments, followed by a brief adjudication.

The focus is on the persuasiveness of the arguments rather than just delivery, making it essential for speakers to clearly define the terms of the debate, offer strong rebuttals, and provide detailed examples to support their case. Preparation for the debates includes both research and practice sessions, allowing students ample time to develop and refine their arguments.

Overall, the competition fosters a collaborative environment where students can engage in meaningful discussions and hone their debating skills in a supportive setting.

This Week’s Y7 Topic: That in Australia it should be illegal for owners to let their pet cats leave their home or property.

Well done to the following students in McDouall, Jenna Forrest, Joao Segorbe, Mark Rolfe, Ethan Wei, Feargal Lambert, Robert Hamori, Emilio Dressler.

Well done to the following students in Roseby, Charlie Benfield, Sophie Wong, Sammy Halliday.

Sport

Congratulations to all students for completing their Winter Sport. We hope you all look forward to the Summer Season.

Year 6 Come to Lunch

It was wonderful to meet some Yr 6 students who will be starting at Redlands next year. We even had some siblings come across for lunch and to have a look around the Senior School Campus. We look forward to welcoming you next year.

Yr 7 Technology Creations

Yr 7 students have been busy making their Cam Toys over the last few weeks. A “Cam Toy” is a small mechanical toy that moves in a fun way when you turn a handle. Inside the toy, there’s a special piece called a “cam” that helps change the turning motion into a different kind of movement, like making a figure jump up and down or wave its arms. These toys are great for learning how things move and work!

Well done Yr 7!

Head of Junior School

Halfway Point

As we reach the halfway point of the term, it’s a good time to reflect on what has been an action packed 5 weeks. We have enjoyed important events in the life of the school such as the Junior Music Festival, the Athletics Carnival, Book Week, Science Week, incursions and excursions to name but a few. In the core business of learning and teaching we have seen pleasing progress in many areas—students have been engaged, teachers have delivered stimulating lessons and the school continues to be a positive and productive learning environment. These successes are worth celebrating, and they set a strong foundation for what lies ahead.

This is also a moment for each of us to pause and reflect individually. In Junior Assembly this week I asked students to reflect on their personal achievements and challenges so far, what they have done well, and where they can improve? There’s always room to grow, whether it’s refining study habits, participating more actively in class, or offering support to those around us. Knowing our superb student body, I have no doubt that they will commit to finishing this term with the same energy and determination that got us to this point.

Staffing News

Next week we farewell our highly regarded PE/PD/H teacher Ms Faye Dongas. Throughout Faye’s time at Redlands, she has worked across many P-6 classes. Faye’s enthusiasm and dedication in teaching our students the foundational skill of physical education has been very much appreciated as is her commitment to teaching and guided them through personal health and safety education. We will be sad to see Faye leave us, but we wish her well on her next adventure as she starts a new position as PDHPE teacher at Central Coast Grammar School.

Project Connect, from our Dean of Students, Mrs Clinton

The Project Connect program is an opportunity for our Year 6 students to build strong, supportive relationships with our Year 10 mentors which will assist their transition from the Junior Campus to the Senior Campus. We aim to create a seamless and positive experience for our Year 6’s and we look forward to watching the bonds that we hope will continue to grow

Recently some of our Year 6 students had a great time meeting their Year 10 mentors, diving into a series of engaging getting-to-know-you challenges and fun icebreaker activities. These early morning activities were fun and instrumental in fostering teamwork, collaboration, and a vibrant sense of camaraderie among the students.

Uniform Update

As the days grow warmer and given that not all students are currently wearing the new uniform, which affords greater flexibility, students wearing the old uniform may choose to wear their summer uniform to school on very hot days.

Snowsports State Interschool Championships

Last week, our Redlands House and Prep school students competed at the Interschool state championships held in Perisher Valley. What a big achievement for all these students to represent their school at this competitive level, we are all so proud of them!

Stand-out results from our Ski Cross Team; Jemima Joyce, Saskia Williams and Annabel Grinham qualifying for Nationals to be held next week in Perisher. Jemima placed in the top 20 and scored an individual invite to Nationals for this event also.

A big congratulations to our Alpine GS Team, with Jonathan Burton, Liam Huang, Max Von Konigsmark, and Lucas Lam placing 9th. Another great result from Jemima Joyce, Saskia Williams, Annabel Grinham, and Arwen Fildes, who narrowly missed out on Nationals by 0.92 of a second, placing 7th.

Staffing News

It is with sadness that we farewell our very much-loved PE/PD/H teacher Ms Faye Dongas next week. Throughout Faye’s time at Redlands, she has worked across many P-6 classes. Faye’s enthusiasm and dedication in teaching our younger students the foundational skills of physical education is so very appreciated as is her commitment to ensuring our younger learners are taught and guided through personal safety education. I know that you will join me in wishing Faye well on her next adventure.

It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Ms Georgina Knox on the announcement of her pregnancy. Ms Knox is feeling well and will be on class until the end of the year.

Wellbeing News

A Message from Mrs Clinton

This week in Prep we have been focusing on sharing ‘real life’ stories on how we can be persistent and confident at school and at home. We continue to recognise our emotions and talk about how we are feeling using the Zones of Regulation.

Kindergarten is sharing stories and learning new songs about how we can be like ‘Persistent Pete’.

Students identify three ways of thinking that can help them be persistent when they are faced with a difficult task or a problem. Our Kindy students are learning how to skip independently and are taking turns in being the leader and participating in team games. In class and on the playground, we are practising using our confident voices and saying:

“I can keep on trying when things get hard”
“I know if I try hard, I can do it”
“The more I try, the better I get”

Year 1 are learning to unpack how they are feeling and what to do when ‘bad stuff’ happens. The You Can Do It program also helps us understand how to handle a problem and deal with our emotions. Our Year 1 students came up with fresh and practical ideas for handling tricky times:

“When I feel angry, I can step away for a minute”
“I will face smile and hold it”
“When I feel sad, I go and find help from a friend”
“I take 5 deep breaths and I go and play outside”

Year 2 are learning to understand and manage their emotions through various strategies. We used the movie Inside Out as a tool to relate emotions to real-life experiences and are actively practicing self-regulation techniques using the Zones of Regulation language. This includes using five-finger breathing exercises and taking outdoor movement breaks to help manage and create a feeling of calm.

To reinforce these skills at home and support your child’s emotional development, here are some practical tips:

  • Encourage Positive Self-Talk: Help your child practice confident self-talk when tackling tasks. This could be as simple as saying, “I can do this!” or “I’m getting better at this!” Positive self-talk can make challenging or mundane tasks feel more manageable and boost their persistence.
  • Engage in Meaningful Chores: Involve your child in completing small, achievable tasks around the house, such as writing shopping lists, packing groceries, tidying their bedroom, cleaning the car, or helping with gardening. These activities provide opportunities for your child to apply persistence and self-regulation in real-world contexts.
  • Discuss Emotions and Self-Regulation: After completing tasks, have a conversation with your child about their feelings. Ask them, “How are you feeling?” and encourage them to use the Zones of Regulation language they’ve learned at school. This practice will help reinforce their understanding of emotions and how to manage them effectively.

By integrating these practices into your daily routines, you’re helping your child build emotional intelligence and fostering a supportive environment for ongoing growth of their self-regulation skills and overall confidence.

Secondary Sport

Discipline is a cornerstone for success, especially in the context of school sports and academics during student final years. During these formative years, students face a multitude of challenges, from rigorous academic workloads to intense sports schedules, and often the pressure of preparing for their future careers. Discipline, in this context, is the ability to remain steadfast and committed, regardless of the difficulty or setbacks. It is crucial for managing these challenges and emerging stronger on the other side.

In school sports, discipline translates to consistency in training, adherence to coaching instructions, and a focus on long-term goals rather than immediate comfort. It is easy to skip practice when the body is tired or sore, but disciplined athletes understand that progress comes from pushing through such discomfort. This mindset is not about ignoring the body’s signals of genuine distress but about distinguishing between discomfort that hinders growth and the discomfort necessary for it. Students who cultivate discipline in sports learn the importance of persistence, the value of repetition, and the power of mental toughness—qualities that are transferable to other areas of life, including academics.

Similarly, in academics, discipline is vital for maintaining a steady study routine, staying organised, and managing time effectively. The final years of school are often marked by a hectic schedule filled with exams, projects, and university applications. In such a high-pressure environment, it is easy for students to become overwhelmed. However, disciplined students understand that even when the workload is heavy or when motivation is low, the necessary work must be done. They develop the habit of breaking down large tasks into manageable parts and tackling them one by one, rather than succumbing to procrastination or stress. This disciplined approach enables them to stay on top of their responsibilities and to approach challenges with a calm and focused mind.

In both sports and academics, there will be times when efforts do not yield immediate results, or when things do not go as planned. Discipline is the training of the mind to persist without complaint, to adapt strategies when faced with setbacks, and to keep moving forward despite the odds. This perseverance is what allows students to not only achieve their goals but also to learn from the process.

Ultimately, discipline is about building a mindset that prioritises growth over comfort and long-term success over short-term gratification. It fosters a sense of accountability, enhances problem-solving skills, and prepares students for the challenges they will face in adulthood. When students learn to embrace discipline, they equip themselves with the tools to manage challenging times with grace and fortitude, making it an indispensable quality in their educational journey.

“Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.” – Abraham Lincoln

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)

Hockey

Over the weekend, our 1st girls faced Chevalier in the grand final. As the top two teams of the season, the match was eagerly anticipated, and the final lived up to the hype.

Chevalier started strong and applied intense pressure on Redlands. The game was briefly paused five minutes in due to a serious injury to Heidi de Saxe, who took a stick to the head and had to be taken off the field. The injury unsettled the team, who soon found themselves down to 10 players due to another injury. Despite the challenges, they fought hard and went into halftime only 1-0 behind.

The second half saw improved performance, with Megan Kirkpatrick playing a crucial role in keeping the team in the game. However, Chevalier ultimately proved to be the stronger side, finishing the match 3-0. A huge shoutout to all the players for their effort and a special mention to Jess Van Extel, who played her final game for Redlands.

At the post-match presentation, Redlands were honoured as joint winners of the Hockey School Championship Shield. The Shield is awarded to the top-performing school across Div 1 and Div 2, sharing the accolade with Barker on a combined total of 6 points. Thank you to all the coaches, players, and parents for making the season a success. We look forward to seeing more players participating in the upcoming summer club competitions.

Drama and Theatre

In the past term, the Year 11 HSC drama cohort has been fortunate enough to learn about physical theatre. Physical theatre is a form of performance that emphasises the use of the body and movement to convey stories, emotions, or ideas, often with little to no spoken dialogue. It blends elements of dance and traditional theatre, allowing actors to express meaning through physical actions, gestures, and expressions.

We started this topic with a focus on Jaques Lecoq, a French man who invented many conventions seen in, not just physical theatre, but many other types of mainstream theatre. From his teaching methods, Year 11 learned how to use techniques such as “7 levels of tension”, “neutral masking”, and “flocking”.

In addition to Lecoq, we also studied Frantic Assembly, a British theatre group that focuses on physical theatre. They utilise movements such as “chair duets”, “building blocks”, and “round-by-through”.

Studying these faster paced techniques in combination with Lecoq’s movements, Year 11 were asked to compose a 6-8 minute piece inspired by a key stimulus photo, story or excerpt of text, in addition to accompanying it with music. After weeks of preparation, all four groups performed their devised pieces today and yesterday to great success. Being able to watch groups collaborate, devise and perform in a group setting has been a cherishing experience that shows great signs of progress for their final HSC performances next year.

Year 10 is continuing their work investigating Multidisciplinary Theatre. This style is allowing our classes to experiment with a variety of different techniques and approaches to creating engaging and meaningful dramatic moments. Music

Junior and Senior Piano Competitions – Tomorrow

Tomorrow, experience an amazing night of pianistic music with the Junior and Senior Piano Competitions! Doors open at 4pm for Junior and 6:00pm for Senior.

The night will be adjudicated by guest adjudicator, Daniel Rojas. Daniel Rojas is a South American born Australian concert pianist and composer who specialises in the rich and vibrant Latin American musical aesthetic. Rojas brings together music from diverse indigenous, folk and popular Latin American traditions and rearranges them for the concert stage. Seminal classical works by Latin American composers also play a significant part of his repertoire. He performs his own compositions, which include solo piano works and two piano concertos, and blends this with his sophisticated abilities to improvise live on stage.

See you tomorrow night for a wonderful night of pianistic excellence!
