Year 7

Science Week
Science Week at Redlands School is a vibrant, themed event that brings STEM to life for students. Classrooms become hands-on labs where students might build solar-powered models or explore the physics of rockets. The school theme for National Science Week in 2024 is Species Survival – More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival of different species in an ever-changing world.
Redlands also hosts a school-wide Breakfast with a Scientist, where students listen to science in action and learn about real world projects. Additionally, students participate in competitions, like coding challenges or engineering design contests, fostering creativity and teamwork.
Science Week at Redlands School is designed to ignite curiosity and deepen students’ understanding of the STEM fields.
Student Reflections
The Breakfast with a Scientist event was interesting. I enjoyed the presentations from different scientists and found them informative about their work and career journeys. Plus, the breakfast was good too! I learned a lot from the presentations, such as the role of a patent lawyer and how AI works. My favourite presentation was the one about AI because it was fascinating to see how ChatGPT uses guess numbers and trial and error. Even though I missed two periods of class, it was worth it! Ines Tan – Yr 7.
I enjoyed Breakfast with a Scientist, because I got to hear about streams of science that we don’t cover in school, like patents and medical science. I found it really interesting, especially computer science and patents, which I learnt a lot about.
It was nice to catch up with some friends outside of my year level as well, and to talk about what we learnt over some super yummy snacks! Alexia Tsacalos – Yr 7.
Chapel
CHAPEL @ Redlands is a fortnightly experience for Yr 7 and provides an important opportunity to connect with our key school values and foundational Christian faith. Through interactive games, bible stories, reflection and music led by our Chaplain Ms Kirsten Philips, Yr 7 are learning about faith, hope and peace and how this can impact their life at school and beyond. Each chapel, our students are encouraged to develop and deepen their experience of these ideas.

Film Club

Come and join fellow Yr 7 Student and film making guru Jake Ikin in film club and learn what the movie world is all about. The club runs every Wednesday afternoon from 3:20pm-5:00pm in L26. We currently have 3 members and are keen on building this up so we can create our own short films to play in our assembly.
Students are encouraged to sign up at drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au and you can join anytime. In the club we learn about advanced editing, audio recording, using cameras, and will carry out some scriptwriting and acting. We can’t wait to see you there.
Shout Outs
Aashray So received a Step Beyond Award in our Stage Assembly for his authenticity and kindness in his everyday interactions with others.
Ines Tan received a Step Beyond award for her amazing efforts in the Junior School Music Festival. We received this beautiful email to commend Ines on her efforts.
‘I wanted to make known the incredible effort Ines put into Junior Music Festival as part of stage crew. It was her first event after joining Production at the beginning of this year, and she just thrived. She was placed on the opposite side of stage to the rest of us but handled herself beautifully. Many teachers commented on how her being there made their nights less stressful and she definitely had that effect on my night. She was amazingly competent around children barely younger than her, demonstrating her maturity. None of us could believe it was her first show, she was just that good.’
Well done to Kody Benoliel who shared his experiences as Student Representative Council Representative in our Stage Assembly on Tuesday.
