Year 7

Week 2 – Getting into the Swim of Things

What an exciting first full week of school it has been for Yr 7! There has been a lot of energy and enthusiasm this past week, as Yr 7 immersed themselves figuratively into their lives at Redlands and literally into the pool at SOPAC during the Secondary School Swimming Carnival. The week has seen great growth in Yr 7 as they learned how to use their lockers successfully, navigated the school to find each of their classrooms and places to spend recess and lunch, and began the process of finding their space at Redlands.

Last Friday, students celebrated the Commissioning of Principal Sean Corcoran. During this event they were presented interesting information about First Nations’ connection to Country, after watching a traditional smoking ceremony, and they learned about the history of Redlands as a school and Mr Corcoran’s deep connection to teaching as a profession – as he explained, ‘teaching runs in my blood.’ The cohort’s behaviour was excellent and they remained well behaved and respectful across the hour-long ceremony.

On Monday Yr 7 were presented with a detailed camp briefing in preparation for their High Country camp adventure in Week 4. There was a lot of anticipation and great excitement in Redlands Hall, as students were informed of the activity schedule and given clear details for what to pack. Please make sure that everything listed on the kit list is packed for camp. Camp details, including packing lists, can be found  here – in the Login section, look for School: ‘Redlands’ and use the passcode: ‘Shine’).

On Tuesday, Yr 7 were ‘thrown into the deep end’ in the best of ways with their first ever Senior School Swimming Carnival. The energy and enthusiasm the cohort brought to the carnival was inspiring to see, with so many students all getting involved in a range of races, getting dressed up in wonderful costumes and being loud in the support of their Houses.

A big congratulations to McDouall House who ended up winning the carnival over runners up, Roseby House. While all of Yr 7 deserve praise for their performances and comportment at the carnival, particular kudos goes to the students below who came at the top of their age categories.

12 Girls:

Age Champion: Alice Connell (Cowper)
Runner Up: Clemence Leroux (Cowper)

12 Boys:

Age Champion: Nicholas Gorman (Roseby)
Runner Up: Zac Fowler (McDouall)

13 Girls:

Age Champion: Freja Nixey (McDouall)
Runner Up: Laura Huang (Dumolo)

13 Boys:

Age Champion: Charlie Brock (Cowper)

This week Yr 7 also received an academic information session from the Dean of Studies (7-10), Mrs Anna-Marie Rolon, about how to use their Core Page and how to access key information about assessments this year. They were also issued with their student planners, which will be a key resource for staying organised and on top of their academic commitments this year. Please note, parents are required to sign student planners each week, to be check by Tutors. Students will have follow-up sessions in Tutor groups about how best to use these planners.

Finally, Thursday was the Redlands Activities Fair Day. All the cocurricular clubs on offer at the school set up stalls and offered information to students to encourage them to sign up and join an interesting and fun activity. Students will have signed up to a range of clubs on the day and are encouraged to sign up to more this term if they wish to try something new. Most club activities will commence in Week 3. All clubs have a dedicated page on Pulse, if you wish to discover more about them.
