Issue 2 2023 Term 1 Week 2 - 09 Feb 2023

Ballet and Dance

Dance Week 1

The Ballet and Dance Academy is off to a great start!

Teachers have been thrilled by the energy and focus from every student in all classes and can’t wait to see everyone in the coming weeks arriving with the correct uniforms and hair tidy. We understand that Bloch has been a tad overwhelmed by the Redlands rush, but hopefully they will get your orders to you quickly.

The new timetable is filled to the brim with a wide variety of dance genres to enjoy. We are still tweaking room allocations and rolls so please check your Calendars on Pulse or Activities on the Redlands App and let us know if your classes are incorrect.

Please note that any changes to enrolments after 27 February will incur an administration fee (see our Terms and Conditions on the Ballet and Dance homepage)

Saturday Dance Classes

Saturday dance starts this Saturday, 11 February. We are really looking forward to seeing everyone.

A reminder that the Murdoch Street pedestrian gate is closed all day Saturday. Access to Parkes Hall for Academy Dance classes is via the gate off Allister Street, adjacent to Junior Reception.

Redlands App

The Redlands App allows you to see all activities, including Academy dance classes, that your child is enrolled in. If you are not familiar with the Redlands App please CLICK HERE for details on how to download and use.

Redlands Pulse – Calendar

In addition to the Redlands App, you can also view your child’s activities via Redlands Pulse by clicking on the calendar icon from the dashboard (see image below).

All Ballet & Dance activities are show in green on the calendar (see image below).  Clicking an entry will show more information.  Cancellations will be crossed out on the calendar.

Dance Uniforms

It was wonderful to see our students dressed in their brand-new dance uniforms this week. As always, we strongly encourage parents to name their dance uniforms, including, dance shoes and socks. This allows us to quickly return any items left in the dance studios. Please note any nameless dance items are put in the Lost Property cupboard located opposite P1.6 in the hallway, whilst school uniforms are taken to the school lost property areas.

Can’t Come to Class

If your child will be at school but cannot attend their dance classes, then please let us know by completing  THIS FORM

Please note that if your child is away from school for any reason, you only need to notify the school, who will then notify the Ballet and Dance office.

Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly

On Wednesday it was wonderful to be able to gather to recognise and celebrate the successes of the 2022 Yr 12 cohort with parents, Redlands staff, and our senior students, Yr 11 and 12.

We bestowed congratulations on the students who made significant achievements in the HSC and IB, as evidenced in their very high results – they topped courses, scored Band 5 and 6s in the HSC and Grade 6s and 7s in the IB. They achieved high ATARs. Some are also being recognised because they demonstrated extraordinary personal academic growth, meaning they moved up a substantial amount in their cohort ranking between Yr 10 and Yr 12 – one of them shooting up 44 places out of a cohort of around 70 students.

This year our focus on growth is intentional. We want to make distinct growth and achievement. We are pleased to recognise and celebrate growth and achievement. Not every student can top their course, or be in the top ten, or achieve perfect 7s or straight Band 6s. And whilst it’s exciting and deserving of high congratulations, the majority of students do not score 99.95 in their ATAR.

But the vast majority of students do experience growth.

Growth is development from a base line – it’s a marked demonstration of improvement via a measurement tool. The growth a student experiences can vary, depending on the student, and a range of other factors. It’s our role as educators to ensure that every student at Redlands grows and it’s our responsibility to create the conditions for every student to grow – to support and challenge them to develop. In this assembly, we celebrated those students whose growth in the final three years of high school was extraordinary. These students didn’t just move up – they soared to achieve their own personal success. At Redlands, we value this as much as we value high performance. We value each and every student’s success – because every student’s journey is different. And because regardless of whether a student comes top or not, if they’ve learned hard and achieved, they have experienced personal excellence. What’s not to celebrate?

Cocurricular Clubs and Activities

Today our students attended the annual Activities Fair to explore the wide range of Cocurricular opportunities available to them. Many of our Clubs, Ensembles and Extra Classes begin in Week 3. We hope the students are excited about what is being offered in 2023. Joining in activities outside of the classroom is a great way to explore a talent or interest, develop a sense of belonging and spark joy.

A full cocurricular timetable is available on Redlands Pulse, where each activity also has a dedicated page with more information and contact details. Parents and carers can also keep up to date with news and receive notifications by joining relevant Groups on Redlands Pulse.

Any general questions can be directed to Dean of Activities, Jon Gray:  jgray@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Study Centre

Study Centre commences from Week 3. Study Centre provides an opportunity for students to receive additional support from teachers across academic disciplines.

Students are encouraged to attend when they feel they need additional support with understanding concepts, developing skills or preparing for assessments in curriculum subjects.

Study Centre is available before and after school Monday-Wednesday and is based in the Learning Hub. A timetable will be posted to the Secondary School page of Redlands Pulse. Further information is available from Subject Coordinators.

From The Principal

Last Friday I was honoured and privileged to be officially commissioned as Redlands’ twelfth principal in our illustrious 139 year history. It was a special and moving ceremony that truly brought, not just the Redlands community, but also the wider community together. In attendance was the Archbishop of Sydney and Bishop of North Sydney; federal, state and local representatives; principals from numerous independent schools across Sydney; current and past Board members; alumni representatives; parent representatives; staff; and students. What I was most proud of on the day was that many of the dignitaries and guests in attendance made a point of mentioning to me how impressed they were by our school and particularly our students. Of course, I was not surprised by this at all.

Chair of the Board, Ms Glenda McLoughlin, and I both reflected on the rich history of Redlands which has shaped our current culture. As I stated in my speech, “All of us at Redlands today are enjoying the fruits from the trees that were planted by others years before us. My aim, as principal, will be to continue to work with our community to plant those seeds so that you, the current students of Redlands, and those students who attend Redlands long after we have left, can continue to enjoy the fruits that are harvested from the seeds we have planted here long into the future.” A full transcript of the speech can be found here.

After the Commissioning Ceremony, I was able to spend lunchtime on the Junior Campus. I sat on the friendship bench and numerous students across K-6 came over to me to chat and tell me some of their Redlands stories. It was wonderful to see so many of our Prep and Junior School students connecting with our new students to make them feel welcome – including me.

On Tuesday the Secondary School enjoyed their Swimming Carnival at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. It was very successful day with great House spirit and numerous Redlands records broken. A highlight was the Staff v Year 12 Student relay where swimming captain, Loch Wilding, swam the final leg to lead the students to a well earned victory over the staff team. Congratulations to McDouall House for winning the House Swimming Shield for the first time since 2015.

Yesterday we welcomed back some students from the Class of 2022 and their parents for the Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly where we recognised and celebrated the academic successes from last year’s HSC and IB students. There was certainly much to celebrate, and the reflections from recent graduates, Cameron Beck and Isabella Kendrigan, were inspirational. Two themes that emerged throughout the speeches were the importance of setting high expectations and the value of focusing on achieving your own personal bests. I am confident the current Year 11 and Year 12 students in attendance would have taken these messages to heart.

Mr Sean Corcoran

Community Update

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through the first few weeks of term. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) have all been actively engaged in connecting, including and informing our new and current families.

We recognise the vital relationship between home and school and provide opportunities for parents and carers to actively engage with the School. Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to meet other Redlands parents and to be involved with the School. Volunteer opportunities include classroom support, event support, Uniform Shop assistance, RPFA involvement or joining one of the Friends of Groups that support our many and varied Cocurricular activities. For more information on these opportunities along with upcoming events and group activities please visit the RPFA section of Note Day.

We look forward to welcoming our community to the popular Twilight in the Garden event next Friday night. This much loved event provides a wonderful opportunity for our new families to connect with our School community on the Fahl Garden on our Senior Campus. We are expecting this to be another sold out event so please purchase your tickets early here.

It was a pleasure to welcome back on campus some of our newest alumni from the Class of 2022 and their families for the Academic Achievement and Growth Assembly yesterday.  This event recognised and celebrated the academic successes from last year’s HSC and IB students. As our new alumni commence their journey beyond the School gates, we continue to ensure that they are connected and supported by the School and their local and global network of Redlanders. Our alumni engagement program includes mentoring and networking programs, interstate and international reunions, a seasonal newsletter and more in order to support a lifelong connection to the School. More information on our alumni engagement program, including international and interstate chapter meetings, can be found here.

Redlands is a school in the Anglican tradition that seeks to provide students and our wider community with the opportunity to understand the Christian faith in a relevant and accessible way.  Each term our School Chaplains provide our community with the opportunity to come together in prayer and encouragement. The first of these events will be held on Monday 13 February from 7.00 to 8.00pm in the David Armstrong Room at St Peter’s Church, Cremorne (with parking located on Waters Rd).

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

All the best for 2023.

Commissioning of new Principal in Fahl Garden

We were delighted to host the Commissioning of the 12th Redlands Principal, Mr Sean Corcoran, in the Fahl Garden, the outdoor space in front of the Learning Hub. This beautiful area was open to students and staff in 2021 as the final part of the Master Plan Stage 1 redevelopment and is a memorial to a former student of the School.

The morning was filled with great joy and it was a privilege to experience firsthand the traditional smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country conducted by First Nations leader Mr Brendan Kerin and to hear blessings given to Mr Corcoran by Kanishka Raffel, Archbishop of Sydney, the Right Reverent Chris Edwards, Bishop of North Sydney, and other members of our community – staff, parents and Alumni.

Celebration of Academic Achievement and Academic Growth

We were delighted to welcome back to campus Redlander Alumni from Class of 2022 who achieved exceptional results and personal growth in their final exams. Current Year 11 and 12 students were able to hear some reflections from our newest Redlanders. Their message was to aspire high, remain connected with your friends and reach out to your teachers. They are there to support you.

Mr Corcoran spoke about his journey at Redlands, starting when the Class of 2022 commenced Secondary School in Year 7. He also mentioned growth in the context of our campus and reflected on how the Learning Hub has transformed the way of teaching and learning. See below before and after.

International and Interstate Alumni Chapters

We regularly connect with Redlanders across Australia and the globe. These events enable Redlanders to meet each other across our diverse community and we provide participants with updates on recent developments at Redlands. Redlanders are always very keen to learn how much has their School has advanced since their time here.

Our Next Event – Autumn Fair

The highly anticipated Autumn Fair on Sat 18 Mar is a day centred around food, fun and entertainment, showcasing the community’s diversity and depth of students’ art-related activities. We are excited to announce that the Fair will be moving back to the Senior Campus, so we will be able to showcase the new Learning Hub and Fahl Gardens as well as the 100-year old heritage-listed Liggins Building. We have a slew of rides for all ages as well as a KindiFarm of baby animals, traditional carnival games and treats as well as a dunk tank, crazy hair and face painting, and scrumptious foods from Asian and Latin American cultures as well as a sausage sizzle. As always, we would not have a successful fair without your help. Thanks to all the volunteers who have already signed up to be stall captains. Please let us know if you would be interested in helping here.

What’s important in Term 1?  Visiting the Career Advisers, the importance of having a study schedule, the importance of Academic Honesty, and activating NESA accounts to access HSC Exam timetables.

Better Together – Students will have control over their individual marks and success, but everyone will score more, if everyone scores more.

Stop, Collaborate and Listen – The importance of shared drives so everyone can see everyone’s study and revision notes, having a tutor buddy, advantages of studying in pairs of groups and writing responses and completing papers together.

The importance of Grit – Grit is more important to success than intelligence and talent. Grit is the ability to get up and when we fall to overcome defeat.

Growth Mindset – Grit and Growth – Two key ingredients for success.

Time Management – Write a timetable that works for you, don’t cram, avoid studying one subject for a long period of time, create a distraction-free setting and organising study spaces such as removing clutter which adds to stress and anxiety.

Focused Study – Take notes, process the notes, make connections, summarise and apply new learning.

Parent Resources

School TV – Parenting Series

Despite the best efforts of parents around the world, the reality is, there is no such thing as the ‘perfect parent’. However, arming yourself with the right information is a good start!

Research shows, that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people, is a close relationship with a supportive adult. With the mental health of today’s young people being at an all-time low, it is simply not enough to parent effectively. Parents need to familiarise themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising children.

SchoolTV – RAISING GIRLS

Raising girls in today’s modern world can be a difficult path for parents and carers to navigate. These days, girls are transitioning to puberty a lot earlier than they used to and the physical, psychological and emotional changes they experience are challenging. As a result, by mid-adolescence, girls are twice as likely to develop mood disorders more so than boys.

Some parents and carers may feel uncertain about how best to support their daughter through the ups and downs of adolescence and how to keep the lines of communication open. With the rise of social media and technology, mental health difficulties in girls are increasing as often they are faced with online images that make it difficult to see themselves as acceptable. Ensuring a daughter’s opinions are heard and her views listened to, will go a long way towards making her feel loved and supported as she tries to establish her own identity.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will attain a clearer picture of what girls are wanting from their adult carers and how best to support them through adolescence.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

SchoolTV – RAISING BOYS

Many parents will attest to the fact that most boys are active, loud, rambunctious and prone to rough play, but this should not affect how a parent acts towards their son. Be careful not to pigeon-hole your son into sex-specific behaviours or gender roles. The male brain is distinctly different in its development. A boy’s physical maturity is often at odds with his mental and brain development.

Societal beliefs about how to raise boys can sometimes influence their adult carers. Although we are not determined by our biology, it is a factor. It is important to support boys in their natural tendencies and nurture their strengths and abilities. Teach them the skills they need for their future and to develop a healthy identity. It is important for boys to have a role model they can connect with and acknowledge who they are. One of the most important determinants for a boy’s development is how secure they feel growing up.

In this edition of SchoolTV, adult carers will gain a better understanding into some of the more complex issues relating to raising boys.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this edition of SchoolTV and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Student Planner

As part of focus on self management and organisation for the year we are asking students to ensure that they actively use their student planners each day. These should be used for:

  • planning for lessons on a weekly basis
  • recording lesson theme and home learning activities
  • preplanning and ‘chunking’ of assessment activities, and
  • keeping dates of upcoming key events.

Over the first few weeks of the term we will be using part of our dedicated academic care time in Tutor to examine why planners are important and how they can be used effectively.

To ensure students are using this as a planning tool we are asking them to get their planner signed by their parent/guardian weekly. This will be counter-signed by their Tutor as well.

Upcoming Events

We have a a number of significant events in the first part of the term which include:

  • Week 2 – Friday 10 February – Secondary School Portrait Photos

Year 7

Week 2 – Getting into the Swim of Things

What an exciting first full week of school it has been for Yr 7! There has been a lot of energy and enthusiasm this past week, as Yr 7 immersed themselves figuratively into their lives at Redlands and literally into the pool at SOPAC during the Secondary School Swimming Carnival. The week has seen great growth in Yr 7 as they learned how to use their lockers successfully, navigated the school to find each of their classrooms and places to spend recess and lunch, and began the process of finding their space at Redlands.

Last Friday, students celebrated the Commissioning of Principal Sean Corcoran. During this event they were presented interesting information about First Nations’ connection to Country, after watching a traditional smoking ceremony, and they learned about the history of Redlands as a school and Mr Corcoran’s deep connection to teaching as a profession – as he explained, ‘teaching runs in my blood.’ The cohort’s behaviour was excellent and they remained well behaved and respectful across the hour-long ceremony.

On Monday Yr 7 were presented with a detailed camp briefing in preparation for their High Country camp adventure in Week 4. There was a lot of anticipation and great excitement in Redlands Hall, as students were informed of the activity schedule and given clear details for what to pack. Please make sure that everything listed on the kit list is packed for camp. Camp details, including packing lists, can be found  here – in the Login section, look for School: ‘Redlands’ and use the passcode: ‘Shine’).

On Tuesday, Yr 7 were ‘thrown into the deep end’ in the best of ways with their first ever Senior School Swimming Carnival. The energy and enthusiasm the cohort brought to the carnival was inspiring to see, with so many students all getting involved in a range of races, getting dressed up in wonderful costumes and being loud in the support of their Houses.

A big congratulations to McDouall House who ended up winning the carnival over runners up, Roseby House. While all of Yr 7 deserve praise for their performances and comportment at the carnival, particular kudos goes to the students below who came at the top of their age categories.

12 Girls:

Age Champion: Alice Connell (Cowper)
Runner Up: Clemence Leroux (Cowper)

12 Boys:

Age Champion: Nicholas Gorman (Roseby)
Runner Up: Zac Fowler (McDouall)

13 Girls:

Age Champion: Freja Nixey (McDouall)
Runner Up: Laura Huang (Dumolo)

13 Boys:

Age Champion: Charlie Brock (Cowper)

This week Yr 7 also received an academic information session from the Dean of Studies (7-10), Mrs Anna-Marie Rolon, about how to use their Core Page and how to access key information about assessments this year. They were also issued with their student planners, which will be a key resource for staying organised and on top of their academic commitments this year. Please note, parents are required to sign student planners each week, to be check by Tutors. Students will have follow-up sessions in Tutor groups about how best to use these planners.

Finally, Thursday was the Redlands Activities Fair Day. All the cocurricular clubs on offer at the school set up stalls and offered information to students to encourage them to sign up and join an interesting and fun activity. Students will have signed up to a range of clubs on the day and are encouraged to sign up to more this term if they wish to try something new. Most club activities will commence in Week 3. All clubs have a dedicated page on Pulse, if you wish to discover more about them.

We are organising a Movie Night as a fundraiser on Friday 10 February from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. All proceeds will go to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The WWF strives to conserve nature through protecting our valuable environment and aims to reduce the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth.

The ticket price is $5 and Yr 11 students will be selling tickets at lunchtimes this week (Week 2) by cash and EFTPOS. Additionally, there will be snacks available for purchase at lunchtime through a bake sale in Liggins Quad.

What do you do with a Problem?

In our assembly this week, I read a story to the students entitled, What do you do with a Problem? written by Kobi Yamada. The book helps to scaffold how to approach challenges that we come across and when the child in the story finally musters up the courage to face his problem, it turns out to be something quite different than it first appeared.

As I shared with the students, our path in life is not a linear one and there will be things that crop up that will challenge us, shape us, push us, and help us to discover just how strong and brave and capable we really are. This is a short video link to the story that you might also be interested to watch with your child and we also have copies of the book in the library for students to borrow.

Principal’s Commissioning

Last Friday morning, it was a privilege to join our Junior School Captains, our Head of Prep School and two Prep students at the official Commissioning of our new Principal, Mr Sean Corcoran. It was both uplifting and moving to be part of this significant event in the School’s history to mark the commencement of Mr Corcoran’s principalship as only the 12th in the School’s 139 year history.

Meet the Teacher Evening

It was wonderful to be able to welcome parents in again for this start of year connection opportunity between parents and teachers. As I mentioned in my start of year letter, clear and positive lines of communication are central to developing the important partnership between home and school as we work together to support your child’s social, emotional and academic needs and growth over the year.

Murdoch Street Pedestrian Crossing

Please note that we have been advised by Transport for NSW that they have not been able to replace the previous School Crossing Supervisor on Murdoch Street as of yet. In the interim period, we have placed a Redlands staff member on the school side of the crossing before and after school to supervise the crossing area but also note that teachers are not authorised to manage the traffic or carry the lollipop sign. We hope that this position can be filled quickly and thanks for your understanding and continued awareness driving around the campus.

Where Can I Pick My child Up From?

Please can parents collecting students from the Allister or Murdoch St gates find a space on the campus away from the reception area and gates to meet your child. The car line pick-up area is already busy and the added congestion of parents right standing outside the Allister St gate is creating more confusion.

Parents are encouraged to come onto the campus and find a seat in the area near Murdoch Street or near the play equipment to meet your child and then go from there. Hopefully this small change will make departure a lot smoother and safer so we thank you for your awareness and support.

School Photos – Extra Junior School Sibling Photo Time

Next Thursday 16 February, we have our formal school photos as per the letter sent at the start of the week. All students will need to wear their full school uniform including blazers and they will have individual as well as a class photo.

Whilst there is still the opportunity to have sibling photos on Wednesday morning as communicated, with this being a Sport day, the photographers have agreed to add an option for Junior School siblings to have their sibling photo before school on Thursday. This will take place in Parkes Hall from 7.30am.

I appreciated the feedback and perspective on this from a parent and hope it will support other families where you only have Junior School students.

Year Group Parent Contact Lists

Year Group Parent Contact lists will be emailed to all Junior School families by the end of this week. Please be reminded that these are strictly for school-based purposes and not for any aspect of commercial use.

School Representative Sport

This weekend sees our first round of Summer Representative Sport as no fewer than 15 Redlands Junior School teams compete against other independent schools in basketball, tennis, touch football and girls’ football.

Our overarching aim is to get students to enjoy being active whilst developing as individuals and as teams in their respective sports. The focus on improvement and effort has always superseded winning but we know that if we get the first two in place, the third can often look after itself.

Connected to this, as we start the school year, please take a moment to read the Independent Primary Schools Heads of Australia (IPSHA) Codes of Behaviour for School Sport below, which is based on the IPSHA Aims and principles of Junior School Sport.

COACHES’ CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

  • Basic skills should be taught to all team members.
  • Children should be encouraged to play hard and win fairly.
  • Teach your players that rules of the sport are mutual agreements, which no one should evade or break.
  • Children should participate for fun and enjoyment and winning is only part of their motivation. Never ridicule or yell at the children for making mistakes or losing a competition.
  • Coaching during games should not interfere with the control by the referee or umpire, nor should it be offensive to opponents.
  • Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of the players.
  • Develop team respect for the ability of the opponents as well as for the judgment of officials and opposing coaches.
  • Make a personal commitment to keep yourself informed of sound coaching principles and the principles of growth and development of children.
  • Make it positive experience for the children.

PLAYERS’ CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

  • Play by the rules.
  • Never argue with an official.
  • Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other players, deliberately distracting or provoking an opponent is not permitted in any sport.
  • Work equally hard for yourself and/or for your team. Your team will benefit, so will you.
  • Be a good sport. Applaud all good plays, whether they are by your team, opponent or the other team.
  • Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat.
  • Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player.
  • Co-operate with your coach, teammates and opponents. Without them there would be no competition.
  • Place in proper perspective the isolated incidents of unsporting behaviour rather than make such incidents the ‘highlight’ of the event.
  • If a player is sent off during the game, a one-week suspension is recommended.
  • Thank the opposition and officials at the end of a game.

SPECTATORS’ CODE OF BEHAVIOUR

  • Children play organised sports for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators only, nor are they miniature professionals.
  • Applaud good performances and efforts from each team. Congratulate all participants upon their performance regardless of the game’s outcome.
  • Respect the officials’ decision.
  • Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a competition.
  • Positive comments are motivational and encourage continued effort.
  • Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players.
  • Show respect for your team’s opponents. Without them there would be no game.
  • Encourage players to follow the rules and the officials’ decisions.
  • Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials.
  • Comments should not interfere with the running of the game.
  • Focus on the efforts and performance of the children rather than the result. Praise
  • is encouraged at all levels.

As parents, the joy of being a positive supporter of your child and their team on the sidelines is an important role and is one that both Redlands and your children value immensely. Supporting our many sports teams each weekend over the course of the year is one of the most enjoyable parts of my role and I look forward to seeing students and families over the year in this environment too.

Twilight in the Garden

The first social gathering for all Redlands families is edging closer; our annual ‘Twilight Drinks’ cocktail evening between 6-8pm on Friday 17 February on the Fahl Garden on the Senior Campus. This is a wonderful opportunity for new and existing families to connect with our community. You can purchase your tickets here or via the Book Now button on the flyer below.  It’s a popular event and as such I would encourage you to get your tickets early.

Meet the Teacher Evening Reminder

Don’t forget that our K-2 Meet the Teacher evening will be held this afternoon from 5pm-6pm in Grade rooms. The Prep staff are looking forward to meeting you all and sharing information that will be helpful to begin our year together. These sessions are short, so our staff have chosen information that they feel is relevant to you all at this stage of Term 1. Further parent sessions regarding information technology, reading, wellbeing and new curriculum information will occur later in the term. These dates can be found on the school calendar for your diaries. A gentle reminder that this afternoon’s session is an adult only function. No baby sitting or children playing in the playground please.

If there is anything that you hear this evening that you would like further information about, please talk to your teacher after the session or email them on their school email. Members of the Executive Team will also be wondering around and introducing themselves so feel free to have a conversation with us as well.

Prep Photo Day

All families would have received information this week regarding Prep School Photo Day, 15 February. Students are to wear their full summer uniform (including blazers). If your child has PE on that day, they will bring their sandshoes only their bags to change into. Please refer to communication from further details. It can also be found on Pulse.

Term 1 Lunchtime Wellbeing Activities

Lunchtimes are a time for our students to refuel and connect with friends. For some, the playground can be a place that is a little overwhelming or it can seem so big that a feeling of ‘what should I do’ can cause some butterflies in tummies. The Prep lunchtime wellbeing activities provide students with opportunities where they can enjoy some new friendships, try some new fun experiences and develop new skills. They are age specific, and some require the students to sign up to the whole term. At our Prep Assembly, next Tuesday afternoon, Ms Fiebiger will be launching the Term 1 schedule and the students will then decide what they would like to try. There is no pressure for our children to join the activities. The beauty is that they are led by both staff and by our student leaders and will change each term depending upon the interests of the children and the staff.

Calling All Volunteers!

If you would like to volunteer some time to help our teachers in classrooms or help Mrs Roberts in the Library, we would love to hear from you. Listening to reading, reading to students, art, shelving and covering books are just a few ways your help would be welcomed in the Prep School. At this stage we are keen to get an idea of how many parents would like to put their hand up to volunteer. We will then ask our teachers to provide further information as to what this may look like in their classrooms. A few points to know before you decide to volunteer:

  • You may not always be in the same room as your child
  • Volunteers will need to provide Head of Prep a current Working with Children’s Check
  • Volunteers will need to attend an information session before beginning where guidelines and expectations will be discussed

If you are interested and would like to know more, please chat to me in the playground or if you would like to volunteer, please email your teacher directly. Our aim would be to have this process up and running by week 6 (this will give everyone enough time to gain a WWCC and attend our sessions).

Parking issues

Once again, can I please ask parents and carers NOT to park on Allister Street between the hours of 7.30am-9am and 2.30pm-4pm. This time frame is for drop off and pick up only.

A staff member will often be out the front of the School to remind parents of this. If you are asked to move on or not to park (even for a few minutes) I would ask that you respond to them in a respectful manner, please. Thank you.

Car line pick up and drop off is always an option for parents so please consider that option when a car spot cannot be found. A reminder that when exiting the car park, you must turn left only. This is to keep pedestrians, our staff on duty and other drivers who are coming up Allister St safe.

Lunches

What delicious lunches arrive at school every day. Thank you for sending healthy food choices for your children. Can I please remind families that lunchboxes need to be able to fit inside school bags and be able to be opened easily by little fingers please. As a parent myself, I understand that food is love but please consider the number of little containers, forks, spoons and ice packs that you send your child with. They need to be able to manage all of this while chatting to friends and finishing the actual food! One final reminder please label every piece of property that your child brings to school. Thanks for helping us with this.

2023 OOSH

A message from Ana Nogueira

Welcome to our Week 2 OOSH. As part of our continuous improvement, a survey was sent to all families this week and we encourage families to take a few minutes to fill it in. Feedback is an important tool that I and the team use to reflect on our service. Thank you in advance for doing this for the ongoing development and growth of OOSH.

Don’t forget to let us know if your child requires medication as we need to keep this stored in the OOSH room with all relevant documentation!

Lucy Hill Library

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Class Parents

We are still seeking Class Parents for the Redlands House Junior classes. The key function of the role is to coordinate social activities for your preschool class to build a strong and positive Redlands community.  It is a wonderful way to become involved in your child’s education and to get to know other families at the school.  While we only need one parent per class, it is absolutely fine if two parents would like to team up and share the role. If you are interested in fulfilling this role, please speak to your class teacher or Mrs Huon.

Medication

Redlands House has strict government regulations that must be adhered to. Medication will only be administered at Redlands House preschool if the medication is prescribed to the child or if it accompanied by a certificate of statement from the child’s doctor.

For medical conditions – If medication is to be administered at Redlands House preschool a medical action plan is to be provided by the child’s parents/guardians.

For illness – If medication is to be administered at Redlands House preschool a medical record is to be completed and signed by the child’s parents/guardians. Please ask educators for a medical form.

In the case of an emergency – If medication is to be administered at Redlands House preschool in the case of an emergency verbal permission can be obtained by an educator from the child’s parents/guardians. In the case of an anaphylaxis or asthma emergency medication can be administered without authorisation.

Medication will be stored in a child proof medication area (either within the fridge or cupboard as appropriate). Under no circumstances should medication be left in the child’s bag or in a place accessible to any children.

Storypark

Thank you to all of the new families that have provide permission for their child to be on Storypark. Storypark allows us to communicate, deepen relationships and strengthen communication between home and preschool.  It also enables us to reinforce experiences and deepen children’s learning. Stories are shared with families each week, sitting and viewing these stories with your child will demonstrate your interest in their world, and acknowledge its importance. You can choose to add your own stories or leave comments and feedback for children and our teaching team. You can also choose to share these stories with family members if you wish. We hope that you will invite your extended family so that the children have an authentic audience who are genuinely interested in their learning.

Secondary Sport

It was great to get out and about to a number of Basketball games across the weekend, with the 1st Girls getting up in a close match against Barker College which will put them in good stead for the Finals series ahead, and a number of the Boys teams in close matches at St Pius X, with the 1st Boys going down by 7 in a game that was swinging both ways. This week sees our Rowing crews head to the Sydney International Regatta Centre for the NSW State Championships across both Saturday and Sunday, this will be a tough weekend of racing with a number of schools looking to use this weekend to launch the back end of the regatta season including the National Championships in Perth later in March.

Last week I mentioned that we as a department have developed some values and how they are lived within the Redlands Sport Programs. ‘Strive for Excellence’ is something that will be on show across the coaches and playing group. This is done by showing pride in yourself, your teammates and your school this is how you play the game and how you interact with your teammates, opposition and officials. Have a growth mindset with a willingness to take on challenges and learn from them to grow and develop. We all should be maintaining high expectations, of ourselves, our teammates being the best versions of ourselves.

‘Excellence is the gradual result of always striving to do better’ Pat Riley (Former NBA Player & Coach)

Basketball

This Saturday 11 February is Round 8 of the ISA Basketball Season. A reminder to check the fixtures on the Redlands Pulse – Weekly Fixtures tab. Please ensure you are arriving to your game 30 minutes prior to the start time on the fixture, dressed in your Redlands Basketball uniform.

A number of our teams are travelling via bus this Saturday. All buses will depart from outside the Adams Centre on Military Rd. If you will be providing your own transport to the game can you please email kseebohm@redlands.nsw.edu.au so that the coaches are not waiting for you at the bus on Saturday.

Best of luck to all of our teams competing in Round 8!

Redlands “Fab 5” Girls (Round 7)

Emilie Bessell: Emilie displayed fantastic leadership in a nail biting 4 point win over rival school, Barker College. Finishing with a season high 37 points and playing all 40 minutes of the game she was unstoppable.

Imogen Kroon: Imogen fought hard at both ends of the floor against a very strong Junior A side. She was aggressive on offence and was a fantastic teammate.

Nicole Steffan: Nicole showed great leadership at both ends of the floor. She was a big reason for such a fantastic first half, keeping the score between the Redlands 2nd Girls St Paul’s 1st Girls team close. She was given the task of guarding the strongest player on the opposition and took the challenge in her stride. Most importantly Nicole was supportive of her teammates for the duration of the game.

Eliza Draper: Eliza led her team by example on Saturday, hustling for the ball, encouraging her teammates and working hard to creating scoring opportunities in crucial moments of the game. She was key in closing the gap in the first part of the game and helped to keep the team calm as the game went into overtime. She made two free throws in the last 30 seconds of the game to get the team across the line.

Annalyse Rowe: Annalyse hustled hard for the ball and scored over half of the teams points after putting up a valiant effort by playing all 40 minutes of the first game of a double header. Despite scoring a large number of points she shared the ball with her teammates and helped to get others involved.

Redlands “Fab 5” Boys (Round 7)

Zain Navqi:  Zain was a monster on the court, crashed the boards hard, facilitated points and came up with a number of steals throughout the game. He led by example to his teammates and peers and was a weapon for the team on both offense and defence.

Oscar Whatmough: Oscar worked tirelessly on defence, often guarding much bigger and more athletic players. His never give up attitude was evident when if he happened to turn the ball over, he would run the guy down and often steal it back.

Charlie Voyce: It was evident in the game that Charlie has put in work to improve his game over the holidays as it showed in his performance on Saturday. A leader offensively, creating opportunities and coming to two foot stops to make good decisions and making open 3’s.

Charlie Stephens: Charlie did a great job of pushing the pace of the game and setting up the half-court offence. He was also so scrambling on defence by picking up full court and forcing his player into a turnover on multiple occasions.

Max Garvey: Max was a monster with his fantastic defensive on Saturday. He effort was fantastic and he managed to maintain this as he played almost the entire game. St Pat’s couldn’t get any Offence going and Max also scored his first points of the season. 4pts, 7 steals and tonnes of hustle.

Coach of the week (Round 7)

Nate Roach: Nate stepped up big time on Saturday. He coached multiple teams and even filled in to coach the 1st Boys side and did an incredible job, keeping the boys calm and making some great change ups throughout the game. He did an incredible job and was part of a great battle from the boys.

We have had a wonderful start to the year in the Redlands Fitness Centre with great numbers across all sessions in the first week. Led by our brand new Year 7s, we have had a variety of circuit-based training sessions blended alongside our individual sessions for our more senior athletes. I could not be more excited by what is to come within this space in the coming weeks and as we lead into the finals for our Summer Rep Sport.

For all students using the Fitness Centre space please continue to be aware of the following changes to the use of the Redlands Fitness Centre. Students are not able to leave school grounds at the conclusion of their sessions. Students are required to change back into their school uniforms and prepare for 1st Period. To assist with this transition, the Fitness Centre will now be open from 6:30am – 7:45am with students able to join throughout the morning.

The Fitness Centre is the perfect space for students to build strength, speed and flexibility, key components of all Rep. Sports at Redlands. Our aim at the Fitness Centre is to create an open and inclusive space for all Redlands athletes and for all students to start their day off on a great note.

Sessions start promptly at 6:30am and have sessions tailored towards athletes of any ability, size, or skill.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Junior Sport

Week 2

Students, both new and returning must be congratulated for both their enthusiasm and their diligence in following the numerous tasks required of them in these last two weeks, in particular during our first week of Wednesday sport where 452 students were deployed to over 14 different venues for their first week of sport.

For those students who play representative sport this meant also attending summer sport trials last Saturday and being allocated to a team for the commencement of our summer sport season this weekend. it is an exciting time for all involved., the first of many optional skills session’s trainings have been well attended, the draw has been uploaded, uniforms have been purchased so we are all ready to go. Redlands students are expected to be at the venue 30min before the start time listed for adequate warm up, position appointment and instructions.

From a communication point of view, please note that after this week the number of emails from Junior School Sport decreases substantially. All future live links for registration, confirmation of Winter Sport, sign up documents are all available on the Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse.

Term 1 Summer Sport team lists: A reminder of what sport your child has selected can be found here: 2023 Summer Sport Team Lists. For students in our representative sport program parents are asked to check team lists weekly as changed may have taken place due to regrading or player absence.

We wish our Representative Teams good luck as they commence their season this Saturday.

The subjective nature of such trials means that students are only “as good as they are on the day” but to give them all the best possible chance to be seen over the time additional selectors and coaching staff were engaged to grade and assist.

I spoke to the students prior to Sport trials last week and challenged them to be ‘proactive and do something about it’ if they didn’t have a good trial day and end up not in their preferred team. As outlined on the Junior School Sport page on Pulse at Redlands our teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change from week to week depending on 3 main criteria:

ABILITY                 in direct comparison to other students on the team

ATTENDANCE    any student who misses 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved

ATTITUDE            this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena

Summer Sport Draw

Our Summer Sport draw (Saturday morning matches) for coaches, parents and staff is ‘live’ in nature. Sport draws and changes are never emailed to parents and due to changes from schools that may come through the week so please do not download and print draws out. When changes to times and or grounds come through from host schools during the week these will automatically update this draw on your device. I have also included the addresses of the venues within the host school to save time and stress once you arrive at a venue with 25 playing fields and you have to find Field 1b. Please spend some time navigating and saving this document on your phone or device. Please see Pulse for the draw.

Sport Calendar

We have a Sport Calendar for each Term. To view the 2023 Term 1 Sports Calendar please click here

This calendar is regularly updated and provides all the key dates for you for school sport, carnivals and major events.

Winter Sport Selection

As per the email sent to all families last Saturday afternoon despite not having commenced Round 1 of Summer Sport the association that we belong to (IPSHA) we were required to submit our numbers and team submissions this week for the 2023 Winter Sport Season that commences later this term.

In what must be record, if they were kept, we had over 200 registrations of the link going live on Saturday afternoon which was an excellent response rate. This continued Tuesday reaching 340 nominations. A few of our Non rep sports are now closed as we have reached the maximum number that we can take. You can now review these online.

Winter Team Lists review

Your responses have now been sorted into sports and are available for you to review.

  • If you are happy with your selection there is nothing else to do and no further action is required.
  • If you wish to change sports please email Junior Sport with the change (name and class of your child and the sport they want to come out from and the new sport they wish to enter into). Please note Brazilian JiuJitsu is full so no more nominations or changes are accepted.

Please note there are no changes to any sports (review)  after 4:00pm Friday 10 February.

Music

The year is off and racing! Students have met their teachers, discussed learning topics, launched projects and activities and we’re fast finding our ‘groove’ for what promises to be a great year to come.

The coming week will see our Cocurricular programs launch con forza!  All Teachers, Tutors & Music Captains are excited to greet members new and old in our first rehearsals. It’s not too late to sign up if you’ve yet to do so.

We’re also looking forward to revealing the themes for this year’s Junior & Senior Music Festivals (drum roll!) and know there is some wonderful music-making in store this year.

Student Leadership Opportunities

We are always looking for ways to strengthen our leadership structures and provide students with opportunities to experience leading their peers. This year, in collaboration with the Music & Arts Captains, we have determined some students who we feel are ready to step up in their ensembles as Ensemble Section Leaders and we will be announcing these roles in our ensembles in the week to come.

Student Performances

Though only the second week back, our Yr 12 students have shown off their collective holiday diligence, as they took to the stage to perform for our special events this past week. We acknowledge the contributions of Maya Little, Phoebe Barnett, Lily Kneale, Elke Mueller & Ash Mitchell in their superb and professional leading of the official music, in addition to the moving, musically established solo performances offered by both Jamison Houchell (Trombone) and Joe Griffiths (Saxophone) at the Principal Commissioning and the Academic Achievement & Growth Assembly respectively this week.

The Music Department wishes our whole community a wonderful Week 3 to come.

Let’s make some great music together.

Amy Richardson | Director of Music P-12

Curricular Music News

Yr 2 Strings – ‘Sing and String’

Yr 2 students were treated to a performance from our Strings tutors this week, in preparation for instrument allocations and distribution. Some students even knew the names of the pieces – Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart and Hungarian Dance Number 5 by Brahms. It was wonderful to see students mesmerised by their teachers, and the excitement in the room was palpable. Families will be receiving allocations this week and are reminded to complete the loan permission in the parent portal prior to Monday.

Yrs 4 & 5 Music Instrumental Program – ‘MIP’

Year 4 students had their very first instrumental MIP lesson today and it is already evident that we will have a wonderful year of music making with this cohort.

Year 5 returning students have already experienced large ensemble playing this year in MIP, and our new students commenced their instrumental lessons today.

We highly encourage our new students to take up the ‘4 week booster’ private lesson program, as a way to accelerate their learning and feel that sense of achievement straight away. Simply use the Extracurricular Enrolment form on Pulse to sign up – and after filling in all the usual details in the ‘Notes’ section, write ‘4 week booster’ and we’ll allocate your request.

All students are reminded to ensure they bring their instrument, MIP book, a pencil and their iPad each Thursday.

Katherine Moses | Head of Junior Campus Music P-6

Extra & Cocurricular Music News

Activities Fair

This lunch time was an exciting chance for our Music Captains for 2023 to meet interested students and to tell them all about what they love about their involvement in the Music Department.  Shout out to the Rock Bands who offered to perform for their peers at short notice. Music makes everything better, so thank you for your generosity of spirit to share this with the School.

Extension Auditions (Senior)

Students should have now seen their enrolment in the iLearn course ‘Music Department Auditions’. Students can navigate the relevant section of the course to access information for online auditions.

A reminder that auditions for the Advanced & Extension ensembles close tomorrow – Friday 10 February via iLearn upload. Results for the Advanced and Extension ensemble auditions will be communicated in the coming week.

Extension Auditions (Junior)

Audition details, including processes and requirements, will be disseminated to those families who have enrolled in one of the following extension ensembles. Please mark these dates in your calendar and we look forward to supporting students through the audition process.

Communication

Repeating our advice from last week, please make sure that you have downloaded the Redlands App so that you can see when your Private lessons and cocurricular ensembles have been scheduled.  If your child is old enough to have a device of their own, we would encourage you to work to have this App installed also, in support of their schooling communication.

Friends of Music

Since last week, we’ve been delighted at the influx of Expressions of Interest from right across our school as parents have generously offered to come alongside our P-12 Music programs this year.

To kick off the year, we will be having a gathering from 7pm on Thursday 23 February 2023 in the Edwards Auditorium on the Senior Campus. Light refreshments will be provided as we dream and plan together for the year ahead.  As mentioned last week, the invitation for this partnership is to all Prep, Junior & Senior School parents!  Email our 2023 President (Lisa Connors) at redlandsfriendsofmusic@gmail.com and / or leave your details via the linked Friends of Music Expression of Interest form.
