Year 12

Pastoral Care

Receiving exam results often triggers a myriad of emotions for many students, whether it is happy, surprised, content or disappointed. Regardless, we would like to encourage students to focus on the bigger picture. Half Yearly Examinations are only one stage in their academic journey. Whilst some students could become motivated and energised by pressure and expectation, others may be finding them overwhelming. At this stage, it is important for students to keep a good life / work balance to  maintain performance and outlook through the final two terms of school. Some things they may find useful when dealing with pressure include:

  • Give yourself time to recover – Don’t be too harsh on yourself and acknowledge your feelings. This period of stress and pressure will soon pass.
  • Open your mind to changes – figure out the area / skill to improve and try to work on that. Review your preparation and reflect on performance.
  • Talk to someone outside the situation, someone you feel comfortable with such as a good friend, a family member, Tutors, School Counsellor, Ms Shorter and / or myself.
  • Get over comparison – accept and own the true skill set you have and believe in yourself.
  • Give your brain a break – going for a walk, playing sports, practising mindfulness or enjoying some personal downtime.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol – they just help compound stress.

Earlier this week , Mr Corcoran spoke to our boys and girls about these potential challenges down the road. He encouraged them to continue to exhibit self-care and do those things that bring them joy. Tutors have also reminded students that exam results are just marks given to one thing they wrote down, once. Results are not a number that reflects their worth and they won’t stop students doing what they want in the long-term. If students stay focused, persist and use results and feedback in a meaningful way, they will continue to see progress. This week students have explored tips and hints they may find useful when using examination results (good or bad) to assist future study and progress.

ISDA Octo-Finals

Good luck to our experienced debaters – Ela Kos, Kai Lin Tan, Lindsay McNeil and Lachlan van der Pluijm, who will be competing at the ISDA Octo-Finals later this week. There’s no debate on how proud we are of all of you!

Multi-Faith Iftar Dinner

On Friday night,  Eric Mullins and Matt Rosair, accompanied by Mr James Clanfield,  went to Unity Grammar School in Austral and attended a Ramadan Multi-Faith Iftar (Dinner). This was a great opportunity to connect with others from another faith (Islam) and learn more about their culture, worldview and expression of faith. They were able to witness their prayer, feast with them (after their fast from sun-up to sun-down), hear from speakers and talk with each other as they shared time together.
