Issue 14 2019 - 16 May 2019

From the Deputy Principal

Our Redlands vision aspires to develop life-readiness in our students, and celebrating National Careers Week this week in the Secondary School saw two esteemed guests, Dr Tim Flannery and our Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence, Cameron Robbins, present to students regarding future career paths. Dr Tim Flannery spoke with both students and parents about the projected change from a carbon-emitting to a carbon-absorbing economy over the next 30 years and the career opportunities in this future clean green economy. Cameron Robbins presented to the whole Secondary School at assembly on Monday morning and then held a lunchtime talk with students, sharing insights and learnings from his own career in Visual Arts. Today at lunchtime, we were also delighted to welcome 18 Redlanders to provide valuable careers advice to students in a variety of diverse areas including business, finance, law, IT, HR, change management, marketing and psychology.

Throughout the week, Visual Arts students in both Junior and Secondary Schools, had the wonderful opportunity to learn from our Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence, Cameron Robbins, as he created his artwork in one of our workshops and installed it, with the help of our Facilities team, outside the John Roberts Centre, where it now takes pride of place. You can read more about the creation of his artwork here . We sincerely thank Cameron for working with our students in this exciting endeavour.

Cameron Robbins – Artist in Residence

After arriving on site only a week ago, renowned Australian artist Cameron Robbins has created a large scale site responsive artwork that now resides just outside the John Roberts Centre, and has been titled En plein air.

Crafting the work from found materials sourced on the Redlands Campus, Robbins has made a structure that consists of a five metre long aluminium pole, a ballast of old sandstone, dismantled bike parts and a model aeroplane. Miraculously out of these discarded materials has emerged a wind powered kinetic drawing machine.

CLICK TO WATCH VIDEO

Redlands students from Yrs 4 to 12 have been actively involved in witnessing the artwork emerging. Visiting the artist in the studio, the students’ enthusiasm spilled over as they investigated first-hand what it is to be an artist, “What would you sacrifice to make your art?”, said an inquisitive Yr 4 student.

Robbins drawing machine will remain at the School and we welcome students and parents to come and observe it in action, as it harnesses the power of the wind to create intricate chalk works on the ground. The sculptural drawing machine has been generously gifted to the School by Robbins to form part of the Redlands Art Collection.

Thank you to Kate Williams, Art Prize Coordinator, and Mark Harpley, Head of Visual Arts, for bringing this project to life and making it so engaging for our students.

Annual Giving – Join us today and support Class of 2019

The Annual Giving this year is dedicated to supporting the Redlands Scholarship Appeal with the objective to raise enough funds to create the Dr Peter Lennox Scholarship in recognition of Dr Lennox’s extraordinary vision and contribution to Redlands.

Our Yr 12 students are already behind the cause, volunteering to help organise activities to inspire student participation in reaching this objective, including a challenge to fellow Redlanders to join them in contributing to this Fund and creating their own Class Legacy Gifts.

Careers Week

As part of Careers Week, 18 Redlanders across a host of industries joined our students in a Speed Mentoring session in the John Roberts Centre during today’s lunchtime. One on one discussions about career choice, tertiary study options, how to get the right job, career changes across a lifetime and life skills were just some of the topics discussed between students and Redlander mentors.

Thank you Caroline Jane, Alumni Manager, and Simone Salier, Careers Advisor, for making this week so exciting for our students.

A Peek Inside the Classroom… Dance

This term I have asked teachers to invite me to their lessons to witness some of the “wow” moments that occur in their classrooms. So, over the next few months, I will be visiting classes in each subject area and will be giving little “peeks inside the classroom” in my Note Day pieces. This week I am starting with Dance.

Last Friday I had the great pleasure of observing a Yr 11 HSC Dance class in Parkes Hall. The students initially shared with me their thinking and planning behind their upcoming major works, illustrating not only their creativity but also their thoughtfulness as they were linking various stimuli and thematic concerns to their physical movements. They then got to “test” these movements with the Prep School’s Transition class. It was wonderful to see some of our older students engaging with some of our younger students in a creative and caring way. They then finished the lesson by incorporating some of the movements they learned from the Transition students in short, impromptu solo performances. I am sure some of our Transition students have a new passion for Dance after this wonderful lesson. Thank you Ms Walker and Yr 11 HSC Dance students for this peek inside your classroom.

Careers Week

We have been celebrating our inaugural Careers Week this week at Redlands with a variety of activities and events aimed at getting students to think about post-school possibilities aligning with our vision of further developing their “life-readiness”. The week kicked off with an Assembly on Monday where our Careers Advisor, Ms Salier, spoke to the students about the importance of thinking of life after school as well as a talk from our Artist in Residence, Cameron Robbins. Cameron spoke to the students about the importance of making mistakes and learning from them in life, as well as the value of having a place to write down and store all of the ideas they might come up with. (He showed us his sketch books!) On Monday evening we were honoured to have Professor Tim Flannery speak to parents and students about future career opportunities as we are moving to a clean economy. He inspired us with his messages of hope and possibility in what can often be a doom and gloom topic. At lunchtime on Wednesday, Cameron Robbins spoke to students about future careers in the Arts and today at lunchtime we have 18 Redlanders returning to the School to share their insights with our current students in a Careers “Speed Networking” session. I would like to thank Ms Salier for all of her efforts in organising this week’s events.

Ramadan Multi-Faith Iftar

Last Friday evening Christian Studies Subject Coordinator, Mr James Clanfield, and two of our Yr 12 HSC Studies of Religions students had the opportunity to visit Unity Grammar School in Austral to attend a Ramadan Mult-Faith Iftar (Dinner). The purpose of the evening was for students to connect with other students from another faith (Islam) and learn more about their culture, worldview and expression of faith. They were able to witness their prayer, feast with them (after their fast from sun-up to sun-down), hear from speakers and engage in further dialogue with each other. We thank Unity Grammar for extending this invitation to us.

Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence 2019: Cameron Robbins

It has been wonderful having our Artist in Residence, Cameron Robbins, onsite over the past two weeks working with our students. His artwork has been taking shape and it was exciting to see it installed outside of the John Roberts Centre earlier in the week. We look forward to hearing him speak tonight at the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection event this evening. I want to thank Mark Harpley, Kate Williams and our Foundation team for their efforts in developing this program over the past fortnight.

Debating

I am pleased to announce that ten teams across Redlands Debating will be progressing to the knockout rounds of the competitions. This is a very exciting result.

The FED teams who will debate in the Quarter Finals this Friday are 7A, 7B, 8A, 9 and 10. This is a home debate. We request that all FED debaters attend the Quarter Finals to help with setting up rooms and chairing/keeping time for the debates. It is really important that all debaters take our responsibilities as hosts seriously as we will have several visiting schools.

The ISDA teams who will be progressing further are Senior A, Senior B, Yr 9, Yr 7 and Primary A. The ISDA Octo-Finals are held over two Fridays and several (8) venues so please check your email regarding specifics and transportation to them. ISDA Senior A, Yr 9 and Yr 7 will be debating at Brigidine this week. The bus will leave Redlands at 4.00pm with Ms Blasco accompanying the students. Please see an email from me with details about the venue.

I am sure you will join me in congratulating all the teams that have made it this far. If a team is not progressing, I thank you for being part of Redlands Debating this Semester and encourage you to look out for trials for SDN in Semester 2.

The Great Debate

To celebrate Careers week, we have a Students versus Teachers debate on Friday 17 May.  The topic is “that formal examinations do not prepare us for real world careers” and the teachers will be affirmative and students negative.

We encourage parents and students to attend debates to encourage our students. Below is a summary of knock out debates

Service and Social Engagement

Mother’s Day Classic

Well done to all those who competed in the Mother’s Day Classic. We had a commendable 120 entrants and came 3rd in the Schools category. Special note was made of our long history of family participation in this great day out. Thank you to toe RPFA for managing the logistics of the Redlands meeting point and bag drop.

Red Shield Appeal

The Salvation Army Red Shield appeal is coming up in a few weeks so be prepared for door knockers collecting funds for the very valuable work undertaken by the Salvation Army to support and provide hope for members of the community who are struggling. If you live close to school you may be door knocked by a team of our Yr 11 volunteers on Sunday 26 May. Our students will be meeting at school at 8.30am for a briefing before heading out to our local streets. When they return to school they will be rewarded by a Sausage Sizzle BBQ.

Redlands School Sleepout

Planning is also well underway for the Yr 10 Redlands School Sleepout which takes place in the last week of this term. In Yr 10 we have been examining homelessness, reflecting on the causes and consequences, as well as the myths and realities. Redlands already have a longstanding relationship with St Vincent de Paul through the Matthew Talbot Men’s Hostel where Yr 11 students and staff serve breakfast on a weekly basis throughout the year.

The Vinnies School Sleepout is an opportunity for our Yr 10 students to better understand the realities of homelessness by experiencing it, if only overnight. We will be sleeping under the Gym and having a modest soup kitchen dinner. We have arranged a number of guest speakers for the evening who can offer valuable insights into homelessness and specifically some of the challenges associated with youth homelessness. The following morning students will be actively participating in a range of practical activities. The empathy students can gain from the Sleepout experience will hopefully be matched by their engagement in a series of action and reflection sessions at School during the morning after the Sleepout.

Socks, Undies and Toiletries Drive for Matthew Talbot

At this time of the year we are also seeking donations for the Matthew Talbot Hostel in Woolloomooloo. The Hostel provides accommodation and support services to people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. These services can include nutritional meals, clothing, showers and basic medical assistance. Redlands teachers and students from Yr 11 attend the Hostel every Monday morning to assist with breakfast service.

We are looking for new items of underwear such as socks, underpants and thermals along with toiletries like shampoo, hand sanitiser, deodorant and moisturiser. Each Tutor Group has been issued with a collections box and challenged to fill it to the brim. Students can bring donations to the Secondary School Office any time before the holidays.

Pastoral Care

Receiving exam results often triggers a myriad of emotions for many students, whether it is happy, surprised, content or disappointed. Regardless, we would like to encourage students to focus on the bigger picture. Half Yearly Examinations are only one stage in their academic journey. Whilst some students could become motivated and energised by pressure and expectation, others may be finding them overwhelming. At this stage, it is important for students to keep a good life / work balance to  maintain performance and outlook through the final two terms of school. Some things they may find useful when dealing with pressure include:

  • Give yourself time to recover – Don’t be too harsh on yourself and acknowledge your feelings. This period of stress and pressure will soon pass.
  • Open your mind to changes – figure out the area / skill to improve and try to work on that. Review your preparation and reflect on performance.
  • Talk to someone outside the situation, someone you feel comfortable with such as a good friend, a family member, Tutors, School Counsellor, Ms Shorter and / or myself.
  • Get over comparison – accept and own the true skill set you have and believe in yourself.
  • Give your brain a break – going for a walk, playing sports, practising mindfulness or enjoying some personal downtime.
  • Avoid drugs and alcohol – they just help compound stress.

Earlier this week , Mr Corcoran spoke to our boys and girls about these potential challenges down the road. He encouraged them to continue to exhibit self-care and do those things that bring them joy. Tutors have also reminded students that exam results are just marks given to one thing they wrote down, once. Results are not a number that reflects their worth and they won’t stop students doing what they want in the long-term. If students stay focused, persist and use results and feedback in a meaningful way, they will continue to see progress. This week students have explored tips and hints they may find useful when using examination results (good or bad) to assist future study and progress.

Yr 12 Formal

The Yr 12 Formal will be held at the Hilton on Friday 28 June. We will have mocktails in the Foyer, a live band and DJ, three course meal, decorations, a photo booth, a professional photographer and a gelato bar. Tickets are $190 per person and will be booked through an online system. Students are welcome to bring a partner from Redlands or another school. A big thank you to Ms Shorter who is overseeing the organisation of this red-carpet event. More details will be emailed to parents and students shortly.

ISDA Octo-Finals

Good luck to our experienced debaters – Ela Kos, Kai Lin Tan, Lindsay McNeil and Lachlan van der Pluijm, who will be competing at the ISDA Octo-Finals later this week. There’s no debate on how proud we are of all of you!

Multi-Faith Iftar Dinner

On Friday night,  Eric Mullins and Matt Rosair, accompanied by Mr James Clanfield,  went to Unity Grammar School in Austral and attended a Ramadan Multi-Faith Iftar (Dinner). This was a great opportunity to connect with others from another faith (Islam) and learn more about their culture, worldview and expression of faith. They were able to witness their prayer, feast with them (after their fast from sun-up to sun-down), hear from speakers and talk with each other as they shared time together.

Red Shield Appeal

The Salvo’s Red Shield Door Knock is coming up on 29 May. The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army’s signature fundraising drive which helps fund their vast network of social and community services.

The Red Shield Appeal began in 1965 and is promoted under their recognisable symbol – the red shield. Each year, The Salvation Army appeals to the Australian community for donations to ensure we can give hope where it is needed most through our social welfare and community service programs.

Every year a small army of Redlands Yr 11 students conduct the door knock around our local Cremorne community. We will be looking for about 100 students to team up into group of 4. They will be allocated a zone with specific streets to cover. We meet at school on Sunday 29 May at 8.30am and, after completing their territory, they return to school to bank the funds and have a BBQ. Please encourage your child to participate.

Yr 11 Parent Drinks

A reminder for those who haven’t already booked their tickets to our Yr 11 Drinks Night. It is on Thursday 23 May from 7.00pm onwards at SoCal Sydney, 1 Young St, Neutral Bay. The cost is $33 per person. Food (included in the ticket price) is Mexican finger food including chicken wings, tacos and quesadillas. Drinks (soft drinks, beer, wine and cocktails) are available for purchase at the bar.

Year 10

Yr 10 Examinations

As we approach Yr 10 Examination period for Semester 1, it is perhaps timely to check in with your son and daughter to see how they are travelling in terms of their wellbeing. Although students may not readily discuss their concerns around these assessments, we ask that parents be cognisant of the perceived or actual pressures that students may feel at this time. At Redlands we encourage students to do their best whilst maintaining clear perspective around the importance of these assessment procedures. Should you feel that your child is needing extra support, please do not hesitate to be in contact.

During our Year Assembly this week, we discussed with students our expectations and their responsibilities in relation to the examination period, with a focus on academic conduct. In addition, if students are leaving early from school early upon completion of their scheduled exams, they are expected to go directly home. Students will not be permitted to frequent Woolworths, McDonalds or elsewhere on their way home.

Yr 10 Industry Day

Industry Day will occur on Friday 24 May. This is a wonderful opportunity for our Yr 10 students to gain an insight into the workplace. We have worked hard to provide students with their first or second preference of company/organisation for the day. Please know that the process was very fair as applications for this day were time-stamped and positions were allocated on a first in, best dressed basis. Letters will go out shortly to parents and students advising the schedule for the day. The expectation is that students will find their own way to and from the venue. Please encourage your son or daughter to be independent and to use public transport to make their way to the venue. It has been suggested that students research the best method / route, using Google Maps and Opal Trip Planner in advance of the day.

Corporate Attire for Industry Day

It is the School’s expectation that students will dress appropriately to attend Industry Day. Students received a briefing at the Year Assembly and were informed of what constitutes acceptable “corporate attire”. A detailed visual has been posted on our iLearn Yr 10 Pastoral Page explaining what students will need to wear. Please do be in contact if you would like me to email you a copy. Please be advised that students will be sent home if they are not dressed appropriately on the day. Parents are not expected to spend exorbitant sums of money on clothing for the day. Target has an extensive selection of low-cost workwear solutions and borrowing attire for the day is acceptable.

Yr 10 Winter Sleep Out

To complement our Pastoral Program on Homelessness and to encourage awareness and empathy around this issue, Yr 10 students will be involved in a Winter Sleep Out on the last Thursday night of this term, Thursday 27 June. Please note this date in your diary, further information to parents will follow. Students are currently fundraising for Matthew Talbot and have been asked to bring in one pair of new Winter socks for our Sock Drive.

Student Achievements

Olivia Wintle has been selected in the NSW Acrobatic Gymnastics team to participate in the 2019 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne at the end of this month. We warmly congratulate Olivia on this marvellous achievement and wish her every success in the forthcoming competition.

Debating Highlights

Our Yr 10 debaters have made it to the quarter finals of the FED Debating Competition. Lauren Wong, Chloe Stewart, Emily Barrelle, Olivia Reid and Ruby Brook will compete this Friday evening at school. Ela Yohannan and Natalie Watson are competing as part of the Senior B team for the ISDA Octo-Finals to be held at Trinity Grammar School on Friday 24 May. We wish all our debaters the very best for these events.

NSW School Vaccination Program 2019

Each year NSW Health works with schools to offer the vaccines recommended for adolescents by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).

In 2019, the following vaccines will be offered:
Yr 10 Meningococcal ACWY vaccine  – single dose

Parent Information Kits will be handed to students in Week 4 and we ask that you read all the information provided, complete the consent form and return the completed consent form to your child’s Tutor before Monday 3 June. A Record of Vaccination card will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic. Parents and caregivers should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

This week, our Yr 9 students completed the NAPLAN tests and I would like to congratulate all students on their conduct and approach in undertaking these national tests. I have been supervising the running of NAPLAN this week which has enabled me to read and (mentally) attempt the test papers. Having a Yr 9 son myself, it has made for topical discussions around the dinner table. I have included an article that provides some information about NAPLAN for anyone who is interested to know more about it.

YLead

Yr 9 students have been given an amazing opportunity to attend a leadership day called Altitude Day, run by the organisation YLead. This organisation provides ‘unique learning experiences that empower young people to be their best and make a positive difference’. Details of this event are on this link and information for the students on how to apply is on their Pastoral Care iLearn page.

Pastoral Care Program

This week students are continuing to understand how to listen to others more effectively.

Social Awareness Program

Students are continuing to research, discuss and understand the different layers of inequality in Indigenous communities within Australia.

Year 8

Yr 8 Camp

All students should be proud of their efforts at camp last week. The energy on our final day was electric. When asked about an experience they will remember for the rest of their life, students provided the following answers:

  • Whilst it was my first time surfing, I will remember how I was supported by multiple peers and friends who encouraged me to keep trying and I gave it my all. Also, my Tutor Mr Byrne encouraged us to “live in the moment” and I will continue to follow this advice for the rest of my life. – Matt Fry
  • I will remember silently sitting on the sand, closing my eyes and then opening them to see the picturesque view of the beach. I desired to watch and listen, taking in every detail of the surroundings such as the tumbling waves in front of the horizon. – Sarah Kumpulainen
  • I will definitely remember the ‘big day’ hike. Our group hiked all the way to the top of Scott’s Mountain. It took a while but once we were at the top, I knew it was worth it. – Camille Ghenzer
  • I will remember the stunning landscapes spanning the unique location, changing from beach, to sub-tropical forest to pure Australian bush the further you ventured away from the stunningly beautiful beach with lush white sand and rolling sandbanks. – Oliver Noakes
News and Achievements
  • Lucy Horton has been awarded third prize in the 2019 Nan Manefield Young Writers Award. Congratulations to Lucy for receiving recognition for a pursuit she loves so much.
  • Best wishes to the Yr 8 FED Debating team (Daniel Close, Will Byron, Lachlan Binnekamp, Lucy Horton and Claudia Lalich) who will be competing in the Quarter Finals this Friday 17 May. You can catch the team in action at 6.30pm in room H2.6.

In Term 2, the Yr 8 Pastoral Care program will explore cyber safety. On Friday 24 May, Project Rockit will be working with Yr 8 delivering their Dot Com program. The workshop explores the risks and rewards of challenging bullying, building peer support in online spaces, challenging judgement and social labels and launch strategies for students to stand up for themselves and others. The workshop will also address social factors and drivers that often spill online: standing out versus fitting in, relationship ethics, privacy and consent and celebrating diversity.

Year 7

Congratulations to Yr 7 for a fantastic NAPLAN week! While it was a lot of preparation and cognitively challenging, the students organised themselves quickly and efficiently each morning and took the test very seriously once they entered Redlands Hall. We had a first from memory this morning when every single Yr 7 student was on time with their calculator in hand. When students are prepared and follow instructions it really helps make the events run smoothly and efficiently. They should be very proud of their efforts and they have been acknowledged for their success in being prepared this week.

Term 2 Pastoral Care: Hitting Our Stride

This term students will focus on refining their habits, study skills and other tools for success by revisiting many ideas introduced to them in Term 1 and adding a few new ones to their repertoire. The Yr 7 Pastoral program has been designed to include strategies and ideas from: Burn Bright program, Pru Salter’s Study Skills, 7 Habits of  Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey and feedback from our wonderful Yr 7 cohort.  A snapshot of our program each week includes:

Monday Chapel
Tuesday Tools for Success
Wednesday Student Tutorials
Thursday Year Meetings
Friday Community Days and Peer Support

Please enjoy a few photos as I report ‘live’ from Yr 4 Camp in Kiama, where I am currently enjoying time the stunning scenery with the Year Group. More to come next week…….Photos can be found on Redlands Pulse

Yr 7 2020

On Monday, Yr 6 students and their families enjoyed an opportunity to spend time in the Secondary School as the next step in our process of student transition from Junior to Secondary School. Students and parents were able to hear from Mr Corcoran (Head of Secondary School), Ms McGarry (Deputy Principal) and Mrs Shaw (Dean of Students) about various aspects of the Secondary School and I was also able to share aspects of the preparatory work in the transition process that is already underway, largely led by our very able Yr 6 staff team, the Junior Campus Dean of Students, Mrs Kourakis, and me. We also heard from Yr 7 students, Jasmine Black and Sholto Mirrlees-Black. Jasmine had come through the Junior School and Sholto has joined this year from a local school so their differing, yet similar, perspectives on how they have found their transitions this year were incredibly helpful and insightful for Yr 6.

Last week, the Yr 6 students had been surveyed on questions that they have and what they were looking forward to or had apprehensions about, so it was reassuring for them to have many of these questions deliberately answered in this session. The students also enjoyed a tour of part of the Senior Campus, led by Yr 11 Peer Support leaders, many of whom had previously been in the Junior School too.

NAPLAN – Yrs 3 and 5

This week saw students across Australia in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is more commonly known.

I am proud of the way in which our students in Yrs 3 and 5 approached these assessments and I am grateful to the many teachers who have been preparing them and then looked after them during these national tests. Unlike many other schools, Redlands requested that our students continued with the pen and paper method and not the online versions of these assessments, given the testing phase that NAPLAN is still in with online testing. Sadly, as has been widely reported, students from many schools were impacted by technological glitches and connectivity issues, which I am pleased our students did not have to contend with alongside the tests themselves. As in previous years, we hope to get the students results back late in Term 3.

Primary Debating

Congratulations to both our Primary A and B teams who have enjoyed some excellent results in recent weeks. Our Primary B group have narrowly missed out on a finals place but our A team will be involved in a finals match next Friday 24 May against Loreto Kirribilli. Well done to the girls and boys involved and their teachers and coaches.

Wedding News

Congratulations to Yr 5 teacher, Kristie Randle, who was married last weekend. Kristie and her husband, Adam, enjoyed a wonderful weekend with family and friends in the Southern Highlands and we were excited to welcome her back this week as Mrs Coman. With another 5C class, her class will remain known as 5R for this year.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

Last Friday, we were delighted to host our annual Mother’s Day breakfast for Junior Campus mums. As always, it is a special community event which was splendidly attended. I hope the weekend was also a special one for the mums in our community and I thank our wonderful catering team again for their sterling efforts in catering for the large numbers in attendance with an array of culinary delights to start the day.

NSW Combined Independent Schools Sport Selection

Congratulations to Iona Gait who is our latest NSW Combined Independent Schools representative for 2019 after being selected in their representative Hockey team. Our Junior School Sports Captains, Stella Simpson-Morgan (Tennis) and Lachlan Carmichael (Basketball) both represented NSWCIS last week in the State Championships and were key players in a very high level of competition.

Mother’s Day Classic

Congratulations to the many people who ran as part of our Redlands team for last Sunday’s Mother’s Day Classic fun run in The Domain. This has always been a wonderful family-oriented event with categories for serious runners through to fun runners of all ages and Redlands was delighted to be placed 3rd in the largest School group category. Thank you again to the Redlands Parents and Friends Association who had a tent at the event as a meeting point for our families, staff and alumni.

Kiss and Drop Off on Murdoch Street

Please can I draw attention to parents who drop children off at the Murdoch Street gate on the Junior Campus. This is a strictly ‘drop off only’ zone in the morning given its proximity to Military Road and the congestion that can (and is) being caused where parents flout these simple safety rules of the road.

The intention and spirit of a ‘kiss and drop’ zone is to keep the traffic flowing. However, what is being observed and reported by parents, staff and students is that a number of parents are getting out of their cars to pass their children’s bags, blazers, chatting to other parents and brushing girls’ hair to name a few issues that are causing traffic in the immediate vicinity of the School. As has been seen, when this traffic builds up, it goes all the way to Military Road and Winnie Street, where cars are not able to turn into Murdoch Street, even after a couple of traffic light changes.

If you do wish to get out from your car, please find an appropriate car space to do so; there are some around the Campus. Many thanks for your cooperation with this important road safety concern. Ultimately, these rules are there to help us look after the safety of every community member, most importantly, your children.

Holiday Travel Toiletries

Thank you to the many Redlands families who have been donating their mini travel toiletries to our collection for Every Little Bit Counts, the organisation who support people in Sydney currently experiencing homelessness and need. The little red bin in Junior School receptions is being regularly emptied and will remain there until next Wednesday 22 May.

We intend to have this bin placed in Reception at the beginning of each term for three weeks so that we can make it a regular opportunity to link our School Values, being environmentally friendly and demonstrating kindness.

A sincere thank you to Ms Mara Bond (mother of Daniel in Yr 4), who has facilitated this giving opportunity for the School and to our Junior Campus Chaplain, Ms McKenzie, who has supported this initiative.

Matildas World Cup Squad Announcement

On Tuesday, the Australian Women’s World Cup team was officially announced and I was thrilled to see that last year’s Junior Sports Captain, Jasmine Black, had been selected to announce the squad. Jasmine is a highly accomplished goalkeeper herself, playing at State level for NSW, and she has also been selected in the Redlands Girls Football First XI as a Yr 7 student this year, a rare and very noteworthy achievement. Do enjoy the announcement here and congratulations Jasmine! It certainly would not surprise me at all to hear her name being announced at this level in years to come.

Mother’s Day Morning

The warmth of our community was once again experienced last Friday, when the Junior Campus students showed their appreciation for their mothers by coming together for breakfast in the Piazza followed by classroom activities. This year, as a special addition to the morning, we were serenaded by Secondary School student, Saxon Smith, on his guitar. After breakfast mothers were invited into the classrooms to complete activities with their children. They happily drew self-portraits, painted abstract art work, constructed origami flowers and shared comparative studies of one another. The pampering station was again the highlight of the activities, where mothers were treated to hand and shoulder massages. Thank you for joining us on this special day and I hope you were able to take away some lovely memories. Additional thanks must go to the Junior Canteen staff for the delicious homemade treats, the Facilities team for their assistance with the organisation of this event and gratitude to Saxon for adding an exceptional element to our morning.

Save the Date – Yr 1 Camp Out

Sydney NRMA Lakeside Holiday Park, Narrabeen Lake on Friday 18 October 4.00pm to Saturday 19 October 10.00am.

More information about this exciting location and associated activities will be distributed soon.

Brainstorm Productions

On Tuesday, Preparatory School students participated in a performance presented by Brainstorm Productions, an award winning in-school theatre company. The show, The Protectors, focused on providing students with anti-bullying strategies, strengthening self-esteem and reinforcing the importance of treating each other with kindness and respect. This performance supplements our student wellbeing curriculum in which we support our students’ social and emotional competencies. If you would like to know more about Brainstorm Productions, visit their website at www.brainstormproductions.edu.au.

From the Chaplain

Thank you to Redlands families for donating their mini travel toiletries to Every Little Bit Counts. The organisation which aims to support people in Sydney currently experiencing homelessness and need. The little red bins will be available at Prep and Junior School receptions to drop off any last-minute toiletries until Wednesday 22 May. The bins will be placed at the beginning of each term for three weeks so that we can make it a regular opportunity to link our values, including being mindful about sustainability, plus demonstrating kindness. A huge thank you to Ms Mara Bond, mother of Daniel in Yr 4, who has facilitated this giving opportunity for the school. If you have any questions please free to contact Ms McKenzie.

Coming Together for Worship

Redlands is a school in the Anglican tradition and as such we have a weekly Chapel service for all students. The Chapel services are designed to be age and stage appropriate for all students. Last year in the Prep School each class led Chapel for their peers. They chose the songs, retold stories in a variety of ways and shared prayers. Students used a variety of Creative Arts and Technology to support their learning and experience in Chapel. It was lovely to hear when reviewing Chapel with the students, that their favourite Chapel was the service they led. Several parents also showed interest and asked to attend. Currently, parents who wish join us for worship are invited for Easter and Christmas services. We would like to warmly extend this invitation to attend when your child’s class is leading. Chapel times are 9.30am for Kindergarten and 10.00am for Yrs 1 and 2 and all Chapel services are conducted in Parkes Hall. If you are able and would like to attend, please enter through the Preparatory Reception area where you will be asked to sign in and out. Illness

The cooler days are certainly upon us and I would like to remind you of the part you play in keeping our community healthy and well. Most coughs and colds are caused by germs called viruses and they are passed on by coughing and sneezing the virus into the air. If your child is unwell with a fever or runny nose and cough, please keep them at home to reduce the chance of spreading their infection to others. Some useful information pertaining to this can be found here. Thank you for your close attention to this matter.

Trading Cards

In past years, students have been given the responsibility of bringing in trading cards to enjoy with their friends during Recess and Lunch. To allow students to play, develop friendships and settle into their new classes before they begin negotiating skills with trading cards, it was decided that this activity would begin in Semester 2. This term, I have had requests from some students who are keen to begin this process earlier in the year. By way of compromise, I would like to allow the students to bring in their trading cards on Fridays only, where they will play and be supervised within the Friendship Club area. The staff would like to support the children in developing their skills of cooperation, turn taking, negotiating and discussion that can be promoted through trading card games. If you would like your child to participate in this activity, please complete and carefully read the conditions associated with trading cards play on this letter and return to the Prep Reception or your class teacher.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

Independence

At Redlands House, we strongly encourage independence. It is wonderful for the staff to watch the children carry their own bags, pack away their belongings and look after their food containers. As children grow and develop they become more capable of doing things for themselves, to express themselves and to explore their world independently. Independence contributes to the development of self-esteem, identity and wellbeing. Doing something for yourself produces a powerful sense of achievement and success. When children have opportunities to make choices, to attempt tasks for themselves, and to take on increasing responsibilities, their sense of themselves as competent members of society grows.

Mother’s Day Celebration

We hope everyone enjoyed our Mother’s Day morning which once again highlighted the sense of community that is achieved when we celebrate these important moments. It was wonderful to have so many families join us to celebrate the special women in our lives. The children always enjoy all opportunities to welcome you to their class and to share their environment with you.

Illness

As the cooler weather of winter approaches, and we come into cold and flu season, we encourage you to please keep your child(ren) at home if they are unwell. This prevents the spread of infection amongst the children and staff. If your child is absent, could you please send an email to Mrs Donna Tait and class teacher so the School is aware of their absence. Thank you.

Head of Secondary Sport

With our winter sports now well underway, it is timely to remind students, parents and coaches of the purpose and code of conduct of the Independent Sporting Association for which Redlands is one of the founding member schools.

The Independent Sporting Association (ISA) is a school-based sport association. Its purpose is to provide interschool sports competition on a home and away basis between the member schools for both genders in Yrs 7 to 12.

The ISA:

  • Aims to advance education and to promote educational policies through providing a full annual sporting program.
  • Encourages and promotes citizenship and education though sport with competitions held on Saturdays.
  • Values and encourages participation, good sportsmanship, team and school spirit and fairness above undue competitiveness and individualism.

ISA Code of Conduct

The ISA seeks to uphold high standards of personal conduct consistent with the ideals of competitive sport and within the best tradition of collegiality amongst independent schools. The pursuit of excellence in games and the enhancement of positive educational experiences for all students are of paramount importance to the ISA approach to sport. ISA schools are expected to place the highest priority on players’ safety and to ensure that coaches, officials and administrators are fully aware of the ISA Code of Conduct as well as the particular rules and safety requirements in their sport. ISA schools are also expected to provide competent First Aid and support for injured players. The ISA Code of Conduct outlines the spirit of the Association and states clear expectations for all who participate in games conducted under the aegis of the ISA.

Coaches

Coaches should recognise that games are for enjoyment, and satisfaction comes from doing one’s best for the team.

Players

Players should be wholehearted in their approach to games, and should adhere strictly to the spirit of the rules or laws.

Spectators

Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive.

Officials

Model the highest standard of sportsmanship at all times.

At Redlands our coaches, staff and officials are inducted thoroughly on this Code of Conduct and the expectations of Redlands sport. This is done to ensure our students get the best educational experience out of the ISA competitions.

I wish all students competing this weekend, the best of luck!

Athletics

This Friday we start our sprints training down at Balmoral Oval with Mosman Athletics Club. All those interested should speak with Mr Ellis in the Sports Department. It will run from 3.30pm (bus departing Redlands) until 5.30pm (bus returning to Redlands).

Photo caption: Bryce Collins and the two Sports Captains (Will Tobin and Sydney Stuckmann) along with Rebecca Fauby (Track and Field Captain).

Basketball

Congratulations to Kate Stanbridge, who competed in the NSWCIS Basketball tournament last week. Kate played a strong role in the team, they finished the day in 3rd position.

Cross Country

Cross Country training starts this Friday, with information found on Redlands Pulse – Cross Country. We are looking forward to a great upcoming season. The bus will depart the Adams Centre at 3.30pm and return approximately 5.30pm (training will finish around 5.00pm)

Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently in a Representative Sport and there are sessions across all mornings Monday-Friday with additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday. Please note that from next week the Fitness Centre will be open from 6.15am with the session starting immediately at 6.30am.

I would recommend that all students looking ahead to their Winter Representative Sport use these sessions as a way to prepare physically for their 2019 season. Sports such as Football, Rugby and Netball all require a level of strength and flexibility all of which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre.

There will also be more information sent out regarding the High Performance program for some of our athletes across the Representative Sports as we begin to prepare for the Winter Sport season. This program is designed to track certain athletes through their off-season/in-season, managing their goals and targets for their chosen sports. This program is a more individualised program and offers the students a more tailored approach to their conditioning and strength development.

Football

Our 1st Girls travelled to the Central Coast, winning 2-0. The 2nd Girls were our only home game for the Round playing Barker. Unfortunately, they went down in a 2-5 loss, but showed some great signs for the season ahead. Our Inter A Girls finished with a very impressive 6-1 win. Our Junior A Girls played against St Spyridon, finishing the game with a 2-5 loss but showing some positive signs for the future of Redlands Football.

The Boys Football program played against St Pius. Congratulations to the 14B Boys team with a 3-1 win. The 16A Boys played a great game, showing they are going to be very competitive this year with a 1-1 draw. Our 1st Boys played a great game and despite going down in a 0-2 contest, played some great team football in what should be an exciting season. All of our boys Football teams showed great spirit and a never give up attitude in what was a great first hit-out for the season. The boys will play St Patrick’s this weekend.

The ISA Football trials were held on Wednesday 8 May. Well done to all of our students who made their way out to St Pius for the day. Our students were recognised not only for their football skills but also their attitude, effort and sportsmanship on the day. Congratulations to the following students who were selected into their respective 2019 ISA Football teams: Kate Stanbridge (Open Girls), Sydney Stuckmann (Open Girls), Scarlet Thomas (Open Girls), Antonio Bonandi Penna Coelho (Open Boys), Simon Dupond (Open Boys) and Tom Huizenga (U16 Boys).

Hockey

Last weekend saw our Hockey teams return to Barker College to take on Oxley in all three games. Our 1st Girls had another tough game where the girls came away with a 6-1 loss. Their efforts should be commended and the goal came from some great team work moving up the field.

The 2nd Girls played out a well-deserved 3-1 win over Oxley. The game was competitive, but we had the better opportunities for scoring goals and more structure in the game. After halftime, Oxley pressured the defence where they managed to score, however the girls closed the game out with their third goal as a reply.

Our 3rd Girls had an outstanding 5-1 win over Oxley. They worked exceptionally well together as a team, using their forwards and backs to their advantage and communicating well as a team. Looking forward to training this week so we can build on our skills and celebrate a great win.

Outside of our home and away games, Anna McCormack has been selected to play in the Open ISA Girls Hockey team to compete at the NSWCIS Championships on Monday 23 May. This is not the first time that Anna has been selected to play in an ISA team, as she has previously been part of the Under 16 sides. We wish Anna all the luck with the game next week.

This weekend will see the first of our home games to be played at Macquarie University Northern Field. Details can be found on both Redlands Pulse (Sport – Hockey) and the Redlands Rhino sports draw.

Netball

Our 1st VII Netball had a strong match against Central Coast over the weekend. Coming out firing in the first half, the girls jumped out to a strong lead working extremely well at both ends of the court. Central Coast fought back strongly to push the match into the 4th quarter. The girls dug deep and managed to hold off a fast finishing Central Coast to take the match by 1 point 44-43!

Saturday saw some great results for our NSNA teams. Our 9A team have had some great matches this season coming up against some tough opposition and Saturday was no different. Taking on Wenona, the girls dug deep in the final quarter to take the match 27-26. Our 8C team were fresh from Yr 8 camp and, looking to continue their winning ways, came out firing against Monte with some impressive attacking shapes and took the match 22-10. Our 7D team has had a tough start to the season, however they are extremely enthusiastic and looking to improve each week. Taking on NSGHS, they were looking focused and won the game 22-18 which was a fantastic result!

Rugby

Redlands Rugby again travelled away last weekend, this time to face Redfield College in Dural. Our Under 14s players played a structured and up-tempo style of rugby, getting the forwards organised early and our backs looking to shift it to the centres as early as possible. Redlands quickly got the upper hand, our forwards working incredibly hard to lay a strong platform for our backs. After a back and forth contest with Redfield scoring two tries to Redlands three, it was great to see our Redlands boys put the foot down and pull away from the opposition running away with the rest of the match to record a brilliant 50-10 victory.

Well done to all of the 14s and also to Hugo Scott who backed up his amazing efforts in the Under 13s match, playing in the Under 14s and scoring an amazing solo effort try.

For our 1st XV, suffering their first loss of the season was a sobering experience. Just lacking in patience at times, we often came away inches from the oppositions try line without points, turning it over or being penalised. Despite these mistakes, with minutes on the clock we were still in the lead. But, with the amount of pressure Redfield were putting on our defensive line, there was eventually a crack. Redfield won by two points in the last minute of the game. Look for our 1st XV to bounce back this weekend in the Grand Final rematch from last year – Chevalier College.

Please make sure to attend our home matches this weekend against Chevalier College. Not only should it be a tough and uncompromising round of football but also a great chance for students and parents from all the teams to meet and support this wonderful Redlands Rugby community.

On Tuesday, Redlands had two students, Cameron Pascoe and Thomas Vekas, represent the school in the 2019 ISA Opens Rugby trials held at St Pius X. These two students have been integral parts to the Rugby program at Redlands and were nominated not only for their efforts this season in the 1st XV but also for how they have carried themselves through the pre-season and also as representatives of our 1st XV last year.

Both boys trialled extremely well across the day, playing against students from  St Augustines, Kinross Wolaroi and St Stanislaus College.

I am pleased to announce that both players gained selection into the ISA Opens Squad for 2019. They received amazing feedback from the selectors on the day, with Cameron being identified for his ball running ability, attacking mindset and his defensive work whilst Thomas’ line-out technique, physicality in defence and attacking efforts were highlighted.

This being the 3rd consecutive year that Redlands has had multiple players selected in the Opens Age Group is a wonderful reflection of the strength of our program and should encourage all Juniors and Inters to aim up and push for higher honours. Well done to Cameron (pictured below) and Thomas (pictured at top).

Tennis

On Saturday, our 1sts (Seb, Aymon, Freddie and James) led the way in a very successful Round 2 with all teams walking away with convincing wins. The 1sts travelled to the Central Coast while all other teams played Oxley College. The 1sts were able to successfully win almost all of their sets with Seb able to play matching winning points under pressure to win his singles match in a tie-breaker. Team 2 played really well with Jade, Emily and Sofia convincingly winning their singles matches 6-0. Teams 3-5 all demonstrated their ability to work hard for each point to successfully, and at times convincingly, win their matches. Redlands Team 6, all Yr 7 students, have settled into the ISA competition feeling right at home with an outstanding result this week, only dropping 3 games over 8 sets.

The NSTA competition also had a very successful Round 2. The new set format worked well with all matches being completed. It was fantastic to see Yr 8 students making a big effort following camp and all students improving their match playing skills. Just a reminder to check the Rhino each week to see which team has the BYE. The draw is also available on Redlands Pulse. The sportsmanship and teamwork all Redlands Tennis students display across both competitions is to be commended.

Junior Sport

Junior School Cross Country

Cammeray Golf Course played host to the Junior School Cross Country Carnival last Thursday and the normally serene surroundings turned into an action and noise packed thrum for the afternoon. Despite the beautiful surroundings, the course was really tough and our students hard work in training throughout their PE classes.

Cowper maintained their stranglehold on the trophy again narrowly edging out Dumolo and Roseby.

The Redlands team (below) was selected based on performances from the day and will look to retain the HICES Division 1 Championship trophy at Orange next Thursday. The team again looks remarkably strong and will be tough to beat.

Redlands 2019 Cross Country Team: Penny Vincent McGovern, Orla Collins, Charlotte Algar, Charli Amm, Dean Mansell, Luca Gazilli, Mackenzie Willis, Harrison Joseph, Isobel Campbell, Amelie Dewar, Georgia Gao, Ava Keller, Rory Hobbs, Jeffrey Benoleil, Daniel Benoleil, Danny Gordon, Joel Daily, Beau Potter, Stella Cunningham, Mila Osborn, Scarlett Cortes, Arkie Riches, Emily Collins, Landon Mansell, Charles Hargrave, Archie Kerr, William Wu, Federico Gazzilli, Annabelle Hwang, Gabriella McAssey, Alex Symons, Aneke Golowenko, Jules Harrington, Charlee Kwintner, Krishna Gupta, Luca Renshaw, Harrison Meagher, James Grey, Leonardo Vaccarezza and Rory McMillan.

Sports Captains Up and Away

Stella Simpson Morgan and Lachlan Carmichael are both living up to their Sports Captain status this week representing NSWCIS at NSWPSSA Championships in Tennis and Boys Basketball respectively. Stella’s team placed 4th overall in Inverell and Lachlan’s team played tremendous basketball in Maitland, going down only once over the week. Sadly, it was in the Grand Final. Both Stella and Lachlan keep the ball rolling this week and next, Stella taking on the best netballers with Ava Mills representing HICES at NSWCIS this Friday and Lachlan representing NSWCIS at NSWPSSA AFL.

IPSHA Football

Yr 5 teams will be adjusted before this weekend’s matches, so please keep an eye out for this week’s teams on email.

Our Yr 6 teams ventured to Trinity and our B team fought hard for a well earned draw. The C team dominated and won 6-1.

Our Yr 4 teams both played great games against Scots at home last weekend and showed great tenacity to eek out wins.

Our Yrs 5 and 6 teams are both fairly tight on playing numbers, partly a deliberate strategy to increase meaningful playing time and partly forced by the number of players we have. It’s really important to us that we don’t have players standing on the sidelines waiting for game time and I’d rather see players supporting teammates by turning up early and having an extra game before their scheduled match or sticking around to play a later match. Coaches will be asking for players to help – if you’re available it’ll be guaranteed extra playing time.

Rugby Sevens

Rugby skills training will be on the Junior Campus Oval on Friday from 7.15am.

Our Yrs 5 and 6 boys split their matches last weekend facing the Coogee Prep team first up before bouncing back to win over St Pats. Our Yrs 3 and 4 boys are very tight for numbers. Any players or potential players interested in Rugby are welcome to join the team training for a trial – test the water and see if they are keen to play. The nucleus of the team is strong and just a few more players would help build the Junior Rugby team!

IPSHA Hockey

The Hockey girls had a great win last week finding the goals five times. Strong performers were too numerous to mention in this great team win!

The draw and team roster and details have been sent to all registered players. Congratulations to Iona Gait who won selection the NSWCIS Hockey team after trialling last week. Iona is a hard worker and super dedicated to her Hockey, she’s been a mainstay of the Redlands team for a few years now and will match herself against the best players across the state in the NSWPSSA Championships in June.

AFL

Our AFL Boys went within a whisker of spoiling Barker’s first AFL home match on their main college Oval and showed some real commitment to their footy. In a seesawing match which twisted and turned until the last few minutes, first gamers Alex Ramsay and Flynn Evans Beard showed great endeavor whilst captain Lachlan Carmichael nearly stole the show with late goals. Passion around Redlands and AFL Football is no more apparent than in our team coach Nic Hurrell – Redlander and current North Shore Bomber Premier Division player, who phones in to me after each quarter with an energetic and colourful explanation of the quarter’s play, before letting me listen from afar to his coach’s address to the team. I’d love some action shots from the AFL boys.

Our Round 2 fixtures was equally close. Newington playing one man up for much of the game were too strong in the end, the boys fighting hard all the way but just losing touch in the final term to go down by 15 points.

The draw for the AFL season is available on Redlands Pulse and has been emailed to players. AFL training will be on the Junior School Oval starting this Friday from 7.15am and is open to all interested in AFL Football.

Netball

Redlands Net Set Go girls have made a fabulous start to their season showing some great passing and teamwork skills.

Wednesday morning Netball sessions are run by Leonie Stewart. Leonie is something of a coaching guru and her weekly Wednesday before school clinics are well worth it. Leonie is keen to pack as much time into the sessions as possible and her and the coaches will be starting their Wednesday sessions at 7.00am in Dunnet Hall NOT 7.15. Please arrive at 7.00am to make the most of this wonderful opportunity to work with an iconic Netball coach.

In case of wet or ominous weather, please remember the NSNA website gives the most up to the minute info regarding court status and is the best resource for competition info. Mrs Ellis will filter information from the NSNA out as quickly as is possible, but the source may give more immediate information.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

For all trainings on the Junior Campus Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible we can find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance. See below for the link.

We love having photos on display and to help archive our seasons, anyone who has any action shots they’re proud of and willing to share, please forward to acarter@redlands.nsw.edu.au
