2023 Valedictory Speech
As this is the final Note Day for the Class of 2024, I have included my Valedictory Speech.
Good evening, Mr Corcoran, Ms Partington, Ms Van de Peer, Members of the board, staff, parents, carers and the Class of 2023.
You may or may not know that I am a runner and trail running is one of my favourite running types. When I consider the experience of leading Year 12 over the past four years, in my mind, I have likened the experience to trail running…. it’s definitely been more of a marathon than a sprint, there have been easy parts and more challenging sections, there have been parts of the trail I did not see coming and there have also been really beautiful moments, which have developed me as an individual and prepared me for the unknown.
As we approach the final stretch of this demanding trail running marathon, it’s a tremendous privilege to speak before you today. Throughout the Class of 2023’s secondary school voyage, I’ve had the honour of getting to know each and every student. However, our journey isn’t just about the students; it’s a tribute to the connections forged among our graduating class, as well as the devoted support provided by the dedicated parents, caregivers, and families who have been by their side at every turn.
Year 12, I have been inspired by your holistic growth as individuals. Despite the challenges of unprecedented times, particularly during remote learning throughout Year 9 and 10, you’ve displayed unwavering resilience. You’ve tackled your senior studies with determination while nurturing your social skills and relationships, particularly in the past 12 months.
As a Computer Science Teacher, I’m a fan of evidenced-based data, and from the iGrow data collected on this Year Group, it’s clear what this cohort’s strengths are. When it comes to goal setting, the Class of 2023 has embraced a structured and intentional approach, as evident in their SMART goals set throughout each semester of their senior studies. It’s been heartening to see Year 12 achieve their academic and personal goals, and it’s equally pleasing to note that a significant number of Year 12 prioritised their wellbeing and work-life balance alongside their academic pursuits. This underscores a cultural shift, recognising the importance of mental and emotional health alongside academic success.
The iGrow data also revealed the Class of 2023’s proactiveness, particularly in Year 12, in seeking guidance and feedback from teachers, reflecting a culture at Redlands that promotes open communication and collaboration between students and educators. Lastly, when it comes to individualised learning, the data points to a culture that values personalised education. Students recognise that one size does not fit all in education.
So Year 12, as you prepare to venture into the exciting world beyond Redlands, I want to impart five invaluable lessons that are deeply meaningful to me. These tips draw inspiration from the wisdom and guidance of my beloved late grandfather, Alan, who played the dual roles of mentor and running coach throughout my high school and university years.
Just before I had the honour of representing Australia at the World Trail Running Championships in Hawaii in 2014, he imparted these precious lessons to me. His words of wisdom have left an enduring mark on my life, and I’m confident they will be equally impactful for you as you embark on your next journey.
Tip 1 – Reflect on your achievements: Just like a trail runner pauses to reflect on the path they’ve conquered, take a moment to look back on your high school journey. Celebrate the milestones and accomplishments that have shaped you. Just as a trail runner recognises the terrain they’ve covered, acknowledge the lessons you’ve learned. Let these experiences fuel your confidence as you step forward into the unknown.
Tip 2 – Stay organised: Embrace the organisational skills of a trail runner as you navigate new horizons. Much like the way you’ve used planners, calendars or digital tools throughout your journey at Redlands, continue to utilise these tools to manage your commitments effectively. Just as a trail runner balances their nutrition and pacing, you’ve honed the ability to balance responsibilities, making it second nature and empowering you to thrive.
Tip 3 –Embrace the Power of Gratitude in Learning: Graduation is not the finish line of your quest for knowledge, just as a trail runner’s race isn’t the end of their running journey. Be grateful for the joy of continuous learning by pursuing personal interests, engaging in extracurricular activities, and joining clubs or community organisations. Just as a trail runner’s curiosity guides them along new routes, let curiosity guide you as you grow intellectually, socially and emotionally.
Tip 4 – Build connections and network: Similar to how a trail runner builds a supportive network of fellow runners and support crews, cultivate strong connections to support you on your journey. Engage with individuals in your desired fields, attend industry events and foster meaningful relationships. Just as a trail runner relies on a support crew for success, remember that the best opportunities unfold through collaboration and mutual support.
Tip 5 – Be resilient: Life’s challenges are akin to the obstacles a trail runner faces on their rugged path. Draw upon your resilience, much like a trail runner’s resilience, to navigate these challenges. Believe in your abilities, learn from failures, and view setbacks as opportunities for growth. Just as a trail runner seeks support from their team, lean on friends, family, teachers and mentors for guidance and encouragement. Remember, setbacks are not the end; they are stepping stones on your path to future success.
I thank my grandfather and mentor, Alan, each and every day for embedding these tips into my everyday life and I hope Year 12, this is something you can carry with you, as you venture into Year 13 and beyond.
I’d like to take a moment to revisit the “Never Forget” memories of the Class of 2023 that beautifully encapsulate our shared journey:
- Despite the formidable challenges posed by COVID restrictions, the memory of witnessing the Class of 2023 wholeheartedly embracing the Year 9 Midawarr Program on-site at Redlands remains etched in my heart. Their sensitivity and cultural awareness during that time are moments I’ll forever hold dear.
- And who could ever erase the memory of the brave Ms Van de Peer cutting my hair into a mullet-style over Zoom during remote learning, with the clippers for Mullets for Mental Health? While my mullet wasn’t as meticulously planned as our Year 9 Midawarr camp, it became a moment filled with shared laughter, lightheartedness, and a few “oh my gosh moments”, all in the name of a noble cause, perfectly mirroring the Year Group’s commitment to service.
- Speaking of an adventurous spirit, I’ll never forget the Class of 2023’s spirited domination of the dance floor at both the Year 11 Harbour Cruise and Year 12 formal. These events showcased the joyful camaraderie that defines this year group.
- I’ll also always cherish the image of the Class of 2023 celebrating their final Swimming and Athletics carnival with a superhero-themed lap of honor, symbolising their unity and strength.
- I’ll forever remember our School Captains, Josie and Dan, leading the Class of 2023 at Festival on the Fahl, where they raised over $6000.00 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
- I’ll forever remember Lucy Horton, being the first student to volunteer to have a voice at the NSW Parliament as part of the NSW Constitutional Convention.
- I’ll forever treasure witnessing the entire cohort exemplify servant leadership during the Year 12 Give Back Day, a reflection of the unity and compassion that have been hallmarks of this year group.
- I won’t forget the dramatic transformations of Drama and Theatre students during their HSC and IB Drama individual performances, moments of artistic brilliance.
- I’ll always hold dear the memory of Oliver Noakes’s engaging presentation at the UTS Summit in front of 2000 students, a testament to his achievements and the Class of 2023’s pursuit of excellence.
- I’ll never forget watching the Boys 1sts Football Team win against Shore in the CAS Cup, seeing our senior girls and boys rowing down at The Spit at sunrise, watching Maddie D’Almeida break the school record in High Jump and the resilience of Emilie Bessell and Taylor Riddell at this year’s Basketball Grand Final.
- I’ll also remember Hadley Wintle’s heartfelt reaction when he won the overall winner of the 2023 Gala Arts, earned through his exceptional instrumental performance of Billie.
- I’ll always remember the tears of our Year 12 Dancers when they danced for one last time at the Senior Dance Concert.
- I won’t forget the Year 12 girls’ inspiring ROAR breakfast and the boys’ meaningful connections at the MANCAVE workshops that signified our unity and support for one another.
- Finally, I’ll forever treasure the memory of observing Year 12 express gratitude at the House Morning Teas and Thanksgiving Assembly through heartfelt speeches and meaningful performances. These moments capture their appreciation and camaraderie, embodying the essence of our shared journey.
I would be remiss not to express my heartfelt gratitude to the outstanding colleagues and dear friends who have made this journey alongside us.
For the Class of 2023 to get to this point of graduation, it has taken a significant team of supportive, dedicated and exceptional staff to assist Year 12 with making it to the finish line of this trail running marathon. Please bear with me while I go through a deep list of thank you’s of the Class of 2023’s dream team.
- I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Ms. Martin, my steadfast partner and work companion. Her unwavering support, exceptional organisation, enduring kindness and proactive approach have been truly invaluable. Serving as Assistant Year Advisor for the past four years, and a Tutor during Year 7 and 8, Ms Martin’s dedication and contributions are deeply cherished by Year 12.
- My sincerest thank you to Ms Lucy Benjamin, and Mr Darren Taylor for their tireless dedication to the HSC and IB cohort over the past two years. Their countless meetings, check-ins, and unwavering support have made an immeasurable impact on the Class of 2023.
- I express my gratitude to Ms Marita Jansons for her exceptional pastoral care and wellbeing support, along with her leadership as Year Advisor during Years 7, 8, and 9. I also acknowledge Ms Abby Walker and Mr Mike Warrell for their valuable assistance as Assistant Year Advisors during Years 7 and 8.
- To our exceptional team of Tutors, including Ms Mukherjee, Sensei Okawa, Ms Blunt, Mr Warrell, Ms Apple, Mr Montz, Mr Byrne, Ms Lasky, and Mr.Callaghan, your unwavering dedication leaves a lasting impact on our students in their final year at school. A special mention to Mr Byrne, our longest serving Tutor, who has worked as the Year 12 McDouall Blue Tutor for the last six years.
- I also want to express my gratitude to each HSC and IB teacher who have gone above and beyond in supporting and guiding this cohort.
- A huge thank you to Ms Lisa Ole and the entire Learning Support team, including Ms Cressida Rigney and Ms Jane Sharman, for their exceptional support for our Year 12 students with HSC and IB learning profiles, special provisions for exams and assessments, and assistance to many Year 12 teachers in the classroom.
- A special thank you to Ms Sarah Matthews, Assistant Dean of Students, for her guidance throughout my time as the Assistant Year Advisor for the Class of 2021 and for her care and assistance with the Class of 2023.
- I offer special thanks to the School Chaplain, Ms Kirsten Phillips, for instilling our Redlands values in Chapel services.
- To the Secondary School Counselling team, your unwavering support for our Year 12 students is highly appreciated.
- Thanks to the Head of Sport, Mr Cam Ellis, and Dean of Activities, Mr Jon Gray, for your encouragement and support of students involved in rep sports and cocurricular activities – a strength of this cohort.
- A big thank you to Ms Kim Flatman and Ms Dana Casimaty for your assistance with the 2023 Legacy Gift and preparing Year 12 for Year 13.
- A big thank you to Mr Benjamin Peate, always assisting me at Year Assemblies with sound checks and setup.
- A big thank you to our administrators, Ms Susan Jones, Ms Jane Coutts, Ms Sally O’Brien, Ms Leanne Kells, Ms Erika Yamamoto and Ms Brinda Dogra for all their assistance with Year 12 absences, late sign in’s, event organisation and the list goes on.
- My deepest appreciation goes to the Year Group parents, especially Anna Sherington, Helena van der Pluijm, Jenny Jackson, Lisa Connors, Kylie Binnekamp and JP Forrest, for your valuable contributions in organising events to keep the Class of 2023 parents connected. I would also like to extend my thank you to the Year 12 dads, Gary Lazzarotto, Anders Batemyr, Maurits Binnekamp and Andrew Jackson for all their assistance with the Year 12 BBQ at yesterday’s Activities Day.
- Finally, I would like to give a special thank you to Ms Gemma Van de Peer who has been heavily invested in this Year Group. Not only as the Head of Secondary School but also as an English teacher. Recently she has given so much of her precious time, having 20 minute sessions with individuals in her English class. Her ability to balance the demands of her significant role and give so generously to her students has been very much appreciated.
Above all, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you, the best cohort I have had the privilege to work with. Your presence has left an unforgettable and lasting impression on the fabric of our School.
In closing, our Principal Mr Corcoran famously said, “Leave something better than you found it,” and the Class of 2023, you have achieved just that. You’ve transformed Redlands into a better place, leaving behind a legacy as mature, life-ready young adults who are poised to conquer the world and make your mark.
To the Class of 2023, as you exit the gates of Redlands, remember that with the right mindset, anything in life is possible. Carry the values you’ve learned here, fuel your mindset for your future and never become complacent. Be extraordinary, push your comfort zone and maintain gratitude for the support Redlands has offered you throughout your journey.
I leave you with a powerful quote by the first track athlete to break the 4-minute mile barrier, and inspiration to my grandfather, Sir Roger Bannister. In 1954, it was deemed impossible, to run a sub-4 minute mile, yet, Sir Roger Bannister achieved it due to his mindset, dedication, and determination. He said, “However ordinary each of us may seem, we are all in some way special, and can do things that are extraordinary, perhaps until then…even thought impossible.”
Lace up those running shoes, Year 12, because the world is your trail, and it’s time to pace yourself toward your dreams!
So on that note, could you please applaud the Class of 2023!
Thank you.
