Issue 29 2023 Term 3 Week 10 - 21 Sep 2023

From the Principal

Last night we had a wonderful Valedictory Dinner for our Yr 12 students and their families, culminating a week of events for them as their journey at Redlands is coming to a close. It has been a special time of fun, reflection, nostalgia and celebration for the Class of 2023.

As I was Head of Secondary School in 2018 when many of them commenced Yr 7, I have been fortunate to be a part of their journey and have seen them grow and mature into fine young adults of character and substance who are “life-ready” for the world that awaits them after school.

At yesterday’s Final Assembly, I highlighted the significant impact they have had on Redlands and our school community this year. We all know the challenges and the disruptions we have faced over the past few years due to the pandemic, and 12 months ago, when they were stepping in as the new leaders of the School, we were only just beginning to get back to a sense of normal.

However, over these past 12 months, they have been exemplary role models and led the School with authenticity, vulnerability and a positive school spirit, embodied in their motto, “Fall Forward”.

They have ensured, through their many and varied activities, performances and assemblies, that the unique Redlands culture and sense of community of which we are so proud, has not only continued and been passed on to current students, but has been further enhanced through their positive engagement this year.

So, Class of 2023, thank you, for not only “leaving it better than you found it”, but for also leaving a legacy for future students to aim to live up to and strive to emulate for years to come.

Our Kindergarten to Year 11 students gave a very heartfelt farewell to the Class of 2023 with a Guard of Honour highlighted in this video, as Year 12 made their final journey through the Junior and Senior Campuses yesterday.

It has been a wonderful Term 3 at Redlands with many different activities and events allowing our students to shine in so many different ways. I hope students and families enjoy the break ahead and return to school on Monday 9 October refreshed for the final few months of the year.

Parent Survey

Response requested by Friday 6 October

The Board of Directors and I continue to pursue a journey that positions Redlands as a leading contemporary and innovative school inspiring students to adapt, create and thrive in our complex global community.

With this in mind, we invite you to complete this short survey which should only take a few minutes, is anonymous, does not collect any personally identifiable information and is open until 11.59pm on Friday 6 October for completion.

Thank you for your consideration and contribution within this important process.  Should you have any questions in relation the survey then please contact us through feedback@redlands.nsw.edu.au.

Community Update

As a School we continue to pursue a journey that positions Redlands as a leading contemporary and innovative school inspiring students to adapt, create and thrive in our complex global community.

At the heart of this journey is our community. We recognise the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands and remain committed to providing opportunities for feedback on our performance. With this in mind, we are inviting you to complete a short survey of your feedback.  The survey should only take a few minutes, is anonymous, does not collect any personally identifiable information. Thank you for your consideration and contribution within this important process that can be completed here.

It has been lovely to see and hear how our community has been connecting through Term 3. The Redlands Parents and Friends Association (RPFA), Parent Contact Groups (PCGs) and Friends of Groups (FoGs) have all been actively engaged in bringing our various groups together both socially and operationally. The RPFA is drawn from dedicated and passionate parent and carer volunteers who selflessly support the growth and prosperity of our School and the wider Redlands community. Parents and carers who are interested in shaping the future of the School are invited and encouraged to nominate for the various RPFA Committee positions that will become available at the RPFA Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held at the School on Thursday 26 October.

It was a genuine pleasure and privilege to be able to attend the Yr 12 Farwell Assembly and Valedictory Dinner yesterday.  I have been inspired by the resilience and endeavour demonstrated by this impressive cohort of students in their final years at Redlands, closely supported of course by their families and teachers who shared in the celebrations. We look forward to following the journey of our 2023 Valedictorians as our newest cohort of Redlanders.

Thank you to the parents and carers who attended the Arnhem Land Trip Information Evening last week. The presentation can be viewed here for those parents and carers who were unable to attend either in person or via livestream. Further details will be provided early next term on how to reserve your place on this truly unique experience scheduled for May 2024, offered exclusively to our Redlands community.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

The Community Engagement team wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful Spring break with your family.

Redlands Parents and Friends

Another term has come and gone! It’s time to farewell our lovely Yr 12 families and students who officially graduated last night at a lovely Valedictory celebration of achievement, filled with gratitude. Congrats to all our wonderful new Redlanders! (Don’t relax just yet – there are still final exams to go before we collect uniforms and textbooks for our Second Hand Sales.)

Speaking of which, we will be having another Second Hand Uniform Sale early in Term 4 for those of you who’d like to purchase the current uniform to wear during the two year transition period to the new uniform. Our sales are not only at a great value, but also support the Redlands Foundation Scholarship Fund. If you have clean, good quality current summer uniforms or sports uniforms to donate, please drop them off at the Uniform Shop. Please note we are not collecting any items for recycling (eg. old sports uniforms) at this time. Please also do not bring in: used socks; dirty, stained or torn items; items purchased from external parties (Marks & Spencer’s, Next) as we cannot sell these items.

We will be trialling a new recycling program over the holidays… and will let you know early next term when to bring in any other Redlands branded uniform items for recycling. If you are also running out of storage space, be sure to recycle any non-branded Redlands uniforms items through other avenues (eg Vinnies).

In the meantime, I hope you all have an enjoyable holiday. See you in Term 4!

Our next meeting will be in the second half of October, where we will be discussing Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens by Shankari Chandran.

Head of Secondary School

Farewell to Yr 12

It’s been a significant week for Year 12 as they move through various rites of passage in their culmination of learning and living as Redlands students. Secondary School Chaplain Ms Phillips led a reflective and moving Chapel Service for Year 12 students and parents on Monday morning where she reflected on the various types of lights in their life which enable them to ‘let their light shine’. Lights of comfort, illumination, support and steadfastness aptly illustrated the growth journey for our Year 12 students.

On Tuesday Year 12 were able to have some fun on their Activities Day which involved a Harbour Cruise and some swimming and games at Chinaman’s Beach.

Wednesday marked their final farewell assembly with the student and staff community and Valedictory Dinner and Prize giving at The Star. It’s been an emotional week for the students (and the adults in their life too!) and we are all very proud of them. Some photos for you to enjoy of the various events below:

The Redlands community is proud of these achievements and looks forward to more successes in the future.

Industry Day – Yr 11 Event

Today all of Yr 11 had their valuable Industry Day experience. Our University and Careers Advisors organised a unique opportunity for Yr 11 students to visit a variety of workplaces including a laboratory, a start-up, a construction site or a national broadcaster, to name a few. Students learnt about the range of professional roles that exist within an organisation and how these are projected to change in the future, as well as ‘soft skills’ employers regard as important when recruiting. Students engaged in networking with members of the organisation including recent graduates and senior managers. These skills will be put into practice as they make decisions in Yr 12 about their future careers.

Reed Robinson, Chief of Staff Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) gave our students a detailed tour of ABC Ultimo headquarters. Students visited the NSW news desks, media line distribution room, various television studios and the Indigenous Affairs team. Students were introduced to journalists, foreign correspondents and other media professionals while learning about the technical aspects of gathering and distributing news.

Students then engaged in a Q and A focused on career development, news journalism, and journalism in Australia. The Q and A was hosted by Tracy Kirkland, Continuous News Editor, News Channel at Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Kathryn Robinson, Redlands Alumna, Television and Radio Presenter at Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Farewell to Term 3

In our Yr 12 Farewell Assembly on Wednesday, I wished all students a relaxing and restorative break over the coming holiday period. Despite the heat, the student community conducted themselves maturely and respectfully during the entire farewell assembly and joyfully celebrated in wishing Year 12 all the best as they graduate. I encouraged students in Year 7 to 11 to enjoy the holiday experience, to seek connections with others in real life and to get out into nature, in order to look up and outside of themselves. We thank parents and carers for their support, cooperation and trust this term and anticipate an awesome Term 4, commencing on Monday 9 October.

2023 Valedictory Speech

As this is the final Note Day for the Class of 2024, I have included my Valedictory Speech.

Good evening, Mr Corcoran, Ms Partington, Ms Van de Peer, Members of the board, staff, parents, carers and the Class of 2023.

You may or may not know that I am a runner and trail running is one of my favourite running types. When I consider the experience of leading Year 12 over the past four years, in my mind, I have likened the experience to trail running…. it’s definitely been more of a marathon than a sprint, there have been easy parts and more challenging sections, there have been parts of the trail I did not see coming and there have also been really beautiful moments, which have developed me as an individual and prepared me for the unknown.

As we approach the final stretch of this demanding trail running marathon, it’s a tremendous privilege to speak before you today. Throughout the Class of 2023’s secondary school voyage, I’ve had the honour of getting to know each and every student. However, our journey isn’t just about the students; it’s a tribute to the connections forged among our graduating class, as well as the devoted support provided by the dedicated parents, caregivers, and families who have been by their side at every turn.

Year 12, I have been inspired by your holistic growth as individuals. Despite the challenges of unprecedented times, particularly during remote learning throughout Year 9 and 10, you’ve displayed unwavering resilience. You’ve tackled your senior studies with determination while nurturing your social skills and relationships, particularly in the past 12 months.

As a Computer Science Teacher, I’m a fan of evidenced-based data, and from the iGrow data collected on this Year Group, it’s clear what this cohort’s strengths are. When it comes to goal setting, the Class of 2023 has embraced a structured and intentional approach, as evident in their SMART goals set throughout each semester of their senior studies. It’s been heartening to see Year 12 achieve their academic and personal goals, and it’s equally pleasing to note that a significant number of Year 12 prioritised their wellbeing and work-life balance alongside their academic pursuits. This underscores a cultural shift, recognising the importance of mental and emotional health alongside academic success.

The iGrow data also revealed the Class of 2023’s proactiveness, particularly in Year 12, in seeking guidance and feedback from teachers, reflecting a culture at Redlands that promotes open communication and collaboration between students and educators. Lastly, when it comes to individualised learning, the data points to a culture that values personalised education. Students recognise that one size does not fit all in education.

So Year 12, as you prepare to venture into the exciting world beyond Redlands, I want to impart five invaluable lessons that are deeply meaningful to me. These tips draw inspiration from the wisdom and guidance of my beloved late grandfather, Alan, who played the dual roles of mentor and running coach throughout my high school and university years.

Just before I had the honour of representing Australia at the World Trail Running Championships in Hawaii in 2014, he imparted these precious lessons to me. His words of wisdom have left an enduring mark on my life, and I’m confident they will be equally impactful for you as you embark on your next journey.

Tip 1 – Reflect on your achievements: Just like a trail runner pauses to reflect on the path they’ve conquered, take a moment to look back on your high school journey. Celebrate the milestones and accomplishments that have shaped you. Just as a trail runner recognises the terrain they’ve covered, acknowledge the lessons you’ve learned. Let these experiences fuel your confidence as you step forward into the unknown.

Tip 2 – Stay organised: Embrace the organisational skills of a trail runner as you navigate new horizons. Much like the way you’ve used planners, calendars or digital tools throughout your journey at Redlands, continue to utilise these tools to manage your commitments effectively. Just as a trail runner balances their nutrition and pacing, you’ve honed the ability to balance responsibilities, making it second nature and empowering you to thrive.

Tip 3 Embrace the Power of Gratitude in Learning: Graduation is not the finish line of your quest for knowledge, just as a trail runner’s race isn’t the end of their running journey. Be grateful for the joy of continuous learning by pursuing personal interests, engaging in extracurricular activities, and joining clubs or community organisations. Just as a trail runner’s curiosity guides them along new routes, let curiosity guide you as you grow intellectually, socially and emotionally.

Tip 4 – Build connections and network: Similar to how a trail runner builds a supportive network of fellow runners and support crews, cultivate strong connections to support you on your journey. Engage with individuals in your desired fields, attend industry events and foster meaningful relationships. Just as a trail runner relies on a support crew for success, remember that the best opportunities unfold through collaboration and mutual support.

Tip 5 – Be resilient: Life’s challenges are akin to the obstacles a trail runner faces on their rugged path. Draw upon your resilience, much like a trail runner’s resilience, to navigate these challenges. Believe in your abilities, learn from failures, and view setbacks as opportunities for growth. Just as a trail runner seeks support from their team, lean on friends, family, teachers and mentors for guidance and encouragement. Remember, setbacks are not the end; they are stepping stones on your path to future success.

I thank my grandfather and mentor, Alan, each and every day for embedding these tips into my everyday life and I hope Year 12, this is something you can carry with you, as you venture into Year 13 and beyond.

I’d like to take a moment to revisit the “Never Forget” memories of the Class of 2023 that beautifully encapsulate our shared journey:

  • Despite the formidable challenges posed by COVID restrictions, the memory of witnessing the Class of 2023 wholeheartedly embracing the Year 9 Midawarr Program on-site at Redlands remains etched in my heart. Their sensitivity and cultural awareness during that time are moments I’ll forever hold dear.

  • And who could ever erase the memory of the brave Ms Van de Peer cutting my hair into a mullet-style over Zoom during remote learning, with the clippers for Mullets for Mental Health? While my mullet wasn’t as meticulously planned as our Year 9 Midawarr camp, it became a moment filled with shared laughter, lightheartedness, and a few “oh my gosh moments”, all in the name of a noble cause, perfectly mirroring the Year Group’s commitment to service.

  • Speaking of an adventurous spirit, I’ll never forget the Class of 2023’s spirited domination of the dance floor at both the Year 11 Harbour Cruise and Year 12 formal. These events showcased the joyful camaraderie that defines this year group.

  • I’ll also always cherish the image of the Class of 2023 celebrating their final Swimming and Athletics carnival with a superhero-themed lap of honor, symbolising their unity and strength.

  • I’ll forever remember our School Captains, Josie and Dan, leading the Class of 2023 at Festival on the Fahl, where they raised over $6000.00 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

  • I’ll forever remember Lucy Horton, being the first student to volunteer to have a voice at the NSW Parliament as part of the NSW Constitutional Convention.

  • I’ll forever treasure witnessing the entire cohort exemplify servant leadership during the Year 12 Give Back Day, a reflection of the unity and compassion that have been hallmarks of this year group.

  • I won’t forget the dramatic transformations of Drama and Theatre students during their HSC and IB Drama individual performances, moments of artistic brilliance.

  • I’ll always hold dear the memory of Oliver Noakes’s engaging presentation at the UTS Summit in front of 2000 students, a testament to his achievements and the Class of 2023’s pursuit of excellence.

  • I’ll never forget watching the Boys 1sts Football Team win against Shore in the CAS Cup, seeing our senior girls and boys rowing down at The Spit at sunrise, watching Maddie D’Almeida break the school record in High Jump and the resilience of Emilie Bessell and Taylor Riddell at this year’s Basketball Grand Final.

  • I’ll also remember Hadley Wintle’s heartfelt reaction when he won the overall winner of the 2023 Gala Arts, earned through his exceptional instrumental performance of Billie.

  • I’ll always remember the tears of our Year 12 Dancers when they danced for one last time at the Senior Dance Concert.

  • I won’t forget the Year 12 girls’ inspiring ROAR breakfast and the boys’ meaningful connections at the MANCAVE workshops that signified our unity and support for one another.

  • Finally, I’ll forever treasure the memory of observing Year 12 express gratitude at the House Morning Teas and Thanksgiving Assembly through heartfelt speeches and meaningful performances. These moments capture their appreciation and camaraderie, embodying the essence of our shared journey.

I would be remiss not to express my heartfelt gratitude to the outstanding colleagues and dear friends who have made this journey alongside us.

For the Class of 2023 to get to this point of graduation, it has taken a significant team of supportive, dedicated and exceptional staff to assist Year 12 with making it to the finish line of this trail running marathon. Please bear with me while I go through a deep list of thank you’s of the Class of 2023’s dream team.

  • I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Ms. Martin, my steadfast partner and work companion. Her unwavering support, exceptional organisation, enduring kindness and proactive approach have been truly invaluable. Serving as Assistant Year Advisor for the past four years, and a Tutor during Year 7 and 8, Ms Martin’s dedication and contributions are deeply cherished by Year 12.

  • My sincerest thank you to Ms Lucy Benjamin, and Mr Darren Taylor for their tireless dedication to the HSC and IB cohort over the past two years. Their countless meetings, check-ins, and unwavering support have made an immeasurable impact on the Class of 2023.

  • I express my gratitude to Ms Marita Jansons for her exceptional pastoral care and wellbeing support, along with her leadership as Year Advisor during Years 7, 8, and 9. I also acknowledge Ms Abby Walker and Mr Mike Warrell for their valuable assistance as Assistant Year Advisors during Years 7 and 8.

  • To our exceptional team of Tutors, including Ms Mukherjee, Sensei Okawa, Ms Blunt, Mr Warrell, Ms Apple, Mr Montz, Mr Byrne, Ms Lasky, and Mr.Callaghan, your unwavering dedication leaves a lasting impact on our students in their final year at school. A special mention to Mr Byrne, our longest serving Tutor, who has worked as the Year 12 McDouall Blue Tutor for the last six years.

  • I also want to express my gratitude to each HSC and IB teacher who have gone above and beyond in supporting and guiding this cohort.

  • A huge thank you to Ms Lisa Ole and the entire Learning Support team, including Ms Cressida Rigney and Ms Jane Sharman, for their exceptional support for our Year 12 students with HSC and IB learning profiles, special provisions for exams and assessments, and assistance to many Year 12 teachers in the classroom.

  • A special thank you to Ms Sarah Matthews, Assistant Dean of Students, for her guidance throughout my time as the Assistant Year Advisor for the Class of 2021 and for her care and assistance with the Class of 2023.

  • I offer special thanks to the School Chaplain, Ms Kirsten Phillips, for instilling our Redlands values in Chapel services.

  • To the Secondary School Counselling team, your unwavering support for our Year 12 students is highly appreciated.

  • Thanks to the Head of Sport, Mr Cam Ellis, and Dean of Activities, Mr Jon Gray, for your encouragement and support of students involved in rep sports and cocurricular activities – a strength of this cohort.

  • A big thank you to Ms Kim Flatman and Ms Dana Casimaty for your assistance with the 2023 Legacy Gift and preparing Year 12 for Year 13.

  • A big thank you to Mr Benjamin Peate, always assisting me at Year Assemblies with sound checks and setup.

  • A big thank you to our administrators, Ms Susan Jones, Ms Jane Coutts, Ms Sally O’Brien, Ms Leanne Kells, Ms Erika Yamamoto and Ms Brinda Dogra for all their assistance with Year 12 absences, late sign in’s, event organisation and the list goes on.

  • My deepest appreciation goes to the Year Group parents, especially Anna Sherington, Helena van der Pluijm, Jenny Jackson, Lisa Connors, Kylie Binnekamp and JP Forrest, for your valuable contributions in organising events to keep the Class of 2023 parents connected. I would also like to extend my thank you to the Year 12 dads, Gary Lazzarotto, Anders Batemyr, Maurits Binnekamp and Andrew Jackson for all their assistance with the Year 12 BBQ at yesterday’s Activities Day.

  • Finally, I would like to give a special thank you to Ms Gemma Van de Peer who has been heavily invested in this Year Group. Not only as the Head of Secondary School but also as an English teacher. Recently she has given so much of her precious time, having 20 minute sessions with individuals in her English class. Her ability to balance the demands of her significant role and give so generously to her students has been very much appreciated.

Above all, I want to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you, the best cohort I have had the privilege to work with. Your presence has left an unforgettable and lasting impression on the fabric of our School.

In closing, our Principal Mr Corcoran famously said, “Leave something better than you found it,” and the Class of 2023, you have achieved just that. You’ve transformed Redlands into a better place, leaving behind a legacy as mature, life-ready young adults who are poised to conquer the world and make your mark.

To the Class of 2023, as you exit the gates of Redlands, remember that with the right mindset, anything in life is possible. Carry the values you’ve learned here, fuel your mindset for your future and never become complacent. Be extraordinary, push your comfort zone and maintain gratitude for the support Redlands has offered you throughout your journey.

I leave you with a powerful quote by the first track athlete to break the 4-minute mile barrier, and inspiration to my grandfather, Sir Roger Bannister. In 1954, it was deemed impossible, to run a sub-4 minute mile, yet, Sir Roger Bannister achieved it due to his mindset, dedication, and determination. He said, “However ordinary each of us may seem, we are all in some way special, and can do things that are extraordinary, perhaps until then…even thought impossible.”

Lace up those running shoes, Year 12, because the world is your trail, and it’s time to pace yourself toward your dreams!

So on that note, could you please applaud the Class of 2023!

Thank you.

Key Dates

  • 22 September End of Term 3
  • 9 October Term 4 Begins
  • 9-13 October Yr 11 Camp

End of Term 3

As we bid adieu to all of our Yr 12 students this week, there was a subtle yet evident buzz among the Yr 11 students… I can’t believe this will be us in one year… how did we get to be Yr 12… can you believe it?

This cohort is ready for this next step. So ready in fact, they already invaded the Yr 12 Top Garden at Lunch with huge smiles and a timid yet enthusiastic entrance. While some want this time to slow down, others are in full gear to take this last year of Secondary School head on.

Thank you for all of your continued support throughout this term. Congratulations to you and your children for completing their Yr 11 Examination Block and their various Yr 11 requirements.

We do hope you rest and enjoy a very well-deserved break. We look forward to seeing all students at 6:30am on Monday 9 October in the Undercroft on the Senior Campus before heading out to camp.

Term 4 Uniform Reminders

With the Class of 2024 now as senior leaders, we remind all students that they set a precedent for themselves, their cohort and all of the years below them. We are requesting for students to plan ahead, organise haircuts or purchase any uniform items needed, to ensure they can return to school in Term 4 with the following:

  • No earrings other than a silver or gold stud or small sleeper
  • A clean haircut or hair style that shows the student’s face. If hair is long enough, it needs to be tied back. If hair is short, it needs to be a conservative cut that does not resemble a mullet. Otherwise, students will be asked to change their hairstyle before returning to classes.
  • Summer dress hems at the knee
  • Uniform items in good condition that fit appropriately
  • Appropriate black leather school shoes
  • No necklaces, bracelets or rings

The items listed above are part of the school uniform requirement and uniform demerits will be given out immediately upon return to school.

Industry Day

Today is Industry Day! All Yr 11 students are spread across Sydney at eleven different industries, working with professionals in various fields to be exposed to life beyond Redlands and what happens in the real world.

Thank you to our two incredible Careers Advisors at Redlands, Justine Fowler and Claire Hurst, as well as our Careers and University Administration Assistant, Cressida Rigney, for their incredible efforts in organising the industries on offer for today. These industries have prepared special programs, catering details and engaging sessions for our students to have a truly memorable experience.

Year 9

And That’s a Wrap on Term 3

Congratulations to all Yr 9 students – we’ve made it through another phenomenal term. Students have faced many exciting opportunities and challenges over the past months. From presenting their own contemporary directorial vision for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, to pitching a research and innovative solution to company heads for Commerce, Yr 9 have striven to achieve this term. I hope that the holiday provides a welcome break to recharge and regenerate for students and parents alike. Slow down, connect and enjoy a slower pace before we head into the next busy term.

A general reminder that when we return to school, our expectations for full summer uniform and grooming (haircut, make-up, nails, etc) are available in the student planner. We appreciate parental support with ensuring that these are adhered to from day one of Term 4, Monday 9 October.

CIS Athletics

Congratulations to the following students competed at Wednesday evenings CIS Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park: Amber Kusano, Otto Ross-Sampson, Elizabeth Whelan, Ethan Lee, Max Taylor and Ashley Corn.

A special accolate is in order for Amber Kusano, who achieved a top 3 result in the 15 years 800m and 400m.

Rapid Value Creation Commerce Opportunity

Today we presented Year 9 with an opportunity to participate in a pilot program run in coordination with UTS Startups. The program is called Rapid Value Creation (RVC) and it is centred around hands-on “missions” that involve utilising real-life digital tools to create mini-businesses. Some examples of missions include;

  • Mission 1 – Students will learn how to research business opportunities, reflect critically on options, analyse the credibility of claims by entrepreneurs and businesses and understand the process of starting a small business in Australia (optional)
  • Mission 2 – Delve into the world of Etsy Marketplace and print on demand products.
  • Mission 3 – Explore the possibilities of low and medium content publishing on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing

We are offering the program to a total of 21 students, 3 interested students in each Commerce class. It will involve students coming out of their regular Term 4 Commerce classes and working independently (with their peers) in those lessons. We will also create a Community of Practice where participating students come together once a week so share common pitfalls, what has worked and how they are travelling more broadly.

We have asked students to consider the following before applying;

  • Are you okay to come out of your regular Term 4 Commerce classes?
    • This means you might miss examination preparation as well as other Term 4 activities.
  • Do you work independently well?
    • This program will require a high level of drive and autonomy
  • Are you comfortable with a level of ambiguity? This is a pilot program, and we will not have all the answers.

We have also outlined that they must have parental permission before applying for the program.

If you have any questions, please feel free to direct them to me at egreen@redlands.nsw.edu.au

UN Voice Competition:

In Term 4, Redlands students have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming UN Youth Voice, which is an annual public speaking competition for students in years 7-10. Voice provides delegates with the opportunity to present their innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

Year 8

End of Term

We have made it through another big term (they always are in schools) and I hope that both students and parents have some time over the next two weeks to slow down and take a moment to reflect on the last 10 weeks.

A general reminder that when we return our expectations for full summer uniform and grooming (haircut, make-up, nails, etc) are available in the Student Planner and we appreciate parental support with ensuring that these are adhered to from Day 1 of next term, Monday 9 October.

CIS Athletics

The following students competed at Wednesday evenings CIS Athletics Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

Congratulations to Eva Simpson, Ava Atkinson, Amelie Dewar, Daniel Benoliel, Jeffrey Benoliel and Robbie Smith for their participation, efforts and hard work in their specific events.

Subject Focus – English

In English, Year 8 students are currently studying MacBeth. Today Year 😯 (Ms Mukherjee’s class) completed a reading of Act 3 Scene 4 – The Banquet Scene. To add some fun and flair (and to celebrate the end of term) the class held a banquet of their own as they read through the scene. At the head of the table is Robbie Smith as Lady MacBeth and Connor Grossman as King MacBeth.

House Debating

Apologies, as a few errors were made last week in the House Debating wrap-up.

Our Year 11 adjudicators of Ahnu Guan and Jack Petering awarded McDouall (affirmative team) the debate.

The correct list of representative for this particular debate were:

  • McDouall – Zaira McHutchison, Alexander Heller, Bowen Shiao. Sam Turton
  • Dumolo – Soraya Christian-Hare, Sophia Liu, Belle Monty, India Dutton

Year 7

Bidding Farewell to Yr 12

It was an emotional week at Redlands as we bade farewell to our Yr 12 students, wishing them well as they embark on their final leg of HSC and IB Examinations. While Yr 7 and Yr 12 can sometimes seem a world apart, our Yr 7 cohort have really admired the great leadership of our Yr 12s, embodied in School Captains Dan and Josie, and the wonderful ‘Fall Forward’ culture they have inspired. Many of our cohort received fall forward awards this year and valued the recognition and encouragement they embodied.

Beyond that the Yr 12s have been wonderful day to day role models for our Yr 7s, supporting them in their first orientation day last year, and offering them words of wisdom to help them feel comfortable in their new Senior School routine. This term epitomised this with a collection of Yr 12s providing guidance to each of our Tutor groups based around the importance of Service Learning and offering advice for how to process assessment feedback successfully.

The School celebrated our Yr 12s and acknowledged their achievements on Wednesday in a farewell assembly in Dunnet Hall. Yr 7 also formed the tail-end of a lengthy guard of honour, cheering on Yr 12 as they moved out into the Fahl Garden after the assembly. We shall miss our Seniors and wish them all the best for their examinations and futures beyond Redlands.

Working Hard Until the End – Subject Insight: Science and Chinese

Ask anyone in Yr 7 and they will tell you it has been a busy term! I hope though, that they will also affirm that it has been a really valuable and worthwhile one through which they have learned many subject specific skills, refined their own executive functioning skills and become more confident tackling the range of tasks required of them in Secondary School, while also having space for a bit of fun while doing it all. Certainly, this was something I saw recently visiting 7Y Science and Yr 7 Chinese.

In Science they were being introduced to the value of microscopes as a way of seeing beneath the surface of things. Students enjoyed viewing a variety of slides from bones to leaves to insects exploring the extreme detail they could under the microscopes.

In Chinese, students engaged in a fun practical activity, creating bubble tea, and I was fortunate enough to be invited to the lesson to be a celebrity judge for bubble tea tasting! Students were given the ingredients by Ms Wang and the two teams had to race each other to create the best bubble tea, including Ms Wang’s freshly made tapioca pearls. I had never had bubble tea before – who knew it was so sweet!

Athletics – Junior Athlete of the Year and CIS

Recently, Redlands Athletics recognised its athletes of the year. A huge congratulations goes out to Liv Law who was awarded Junior Athlete of the Year, with some very convincing runs this year, particularly in the 800m and 1500m.

On Tuesday evening, the CIS Athletics Championships were also held at Sydney Olympic Park. Liv notably achieved 3rd place in both the 13 years 1500 and 800.

Congratulations also to Ari Abe-Apostolou, Gabriella Demian, Tristan Fournier Le Ray, Jacob Polo and Alex Taylor for their participation, efforts and hard work in their specific events.

UN Voice Competition

In Term 4, Redlands students have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming UN Youth Voice, which is an annual public speaking competition for students in Yrs 7-10. Voice provides delegates with the opportunity to present innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

Happy Holidays

All that remains is to wish everyone the best for the upcoming holidays. I hope it is warm, but not too warm; fun, but responsibly fun; and full of wonderful moments of relaxation! We look forward to seeing a reinvigorated Yr 7 return for Term 4, commencing on Monday 9 October.

Term 4 Key Dates and Upcoming Events:

  • Week 1: Term 4 commences Monday 9 October.

Head of Junior School

On Monday, our Yr 6 students enjoyed an inspiring visit to the UNICEF headquarters in Pyrmont. For weeks leading up to the trip, Yr 6 students have delved deep into the intricate world of bushfires and earthquakes. They have explored the scientific aspects behind these events, examined the environmental factors contributing to their occurrence and analysed the roles and responsibilities of various organizations involved in responding to such crises.

Midway through their study, the students received a video brief from UNICEF Australia sharing their concern over potential breaches to the rights of the child due to a potential earthquake in Melbourne’s CBD and worsening fire conditions in Yamba, NSW. The teams were tasked with thinking critically about which specific right of the child might be most at risk during their chosen scenario and developing innovative solutions to safeguard that right in the face of a natural disaster. In addition to selecting a scenario and a right, our students also chose a stakeholder who would be responsible for implementing their proposed solution, which invited consideration into the perspectives and capabilities of the stakeholders they selected.

At UNICEF HQ, the students set up their solutions akin to a science fair. They shared their innovative ideas with UNICEF representatives and engaged in discussions about the real-world application of their plans. It was a remarkable moment of collaboration and learning as our students received valuable feedback and insights from experts in the field of child rights and disaster preparedness.

The ultimate objective of this project was to develop comprehensive disaster preparedness plans that would not only address the immediate safety of children but also ensure that their rights are protected during and after the disaster. It was both inspiring and heart-warming to witness Yr 6 rise to the challenge and produce innovative ideas that could make a real difference in the lives of children in crisis situations.

We are thankful that so many parents were able to join us at the Gallery Walk in the morning and see first-hand the thoughtfulness and effort that went into the projects. Redlands is the first school to co-create a program of this kind with UNICEF Australia and we look forward to exploring the potential to scale something similar with the education sector more broadly.

We are very grateful to the dedicated staff at UNICEF Australia for their support in nurturing the next generation of responsible and compassionate global citizens and I extend my gratitude to Ms Green, the School’s Innovation and Entrepreneurial Strategist, and the Yr 6 teachers (particularly Ms Coome), for their leadership and vision for this unique project that we hope many schools from across Australia will benefit from.

Yr 5 Bathurst Excursion

Earlier this week, Yr 5 enjoyed a wonderful experiential learning trip to the Bathurst Goldfields and Hill End connected too their studies on the Goldrush Era. This enriching two-day experience connected to their studies. From student recounts, panning for gold themselves and the mine visit were highlights for many of the students.

My thanks to Ms Jones for leading the trip with a capable team of staff in support and in her absence, to Ms Osborn, for her preparatory administrative work.

Gallery Walks

Students in Years 3 and 6 have been delighted to welcome parents and carers to their classrooms this week to showcase and share highlights in their learning this term. Tomorrow, Yr 4 have this opportunity which Yr 5 enjoyed last term. These gallery walks have also been important ways for us to give parents and carers a closer sense of your children’s learning and from my conversations with some families, I know that this has provided you with a valuable sense of your child’s learning this term.

CIS Athletics

Congratulations to all of our students who competed with great passion and commitment in Tuesday’s searing heat for HICES at the CIS Athletics Carnival. Trained by our specialist athletics and relay coach, Richard Frost, the students should be very proud of this level of representation and additional details can be found in the Junior Sport section.

Yr 12 – Farewell and Thank you

It was both a pleasure and a privilege to attend Year 12’s Farewell Assembly and Valedictory Dinner yesterday; a perfect balance of celebration, recognition, emotion and formality as their time at Redlands draws to a close.

Many of the cohort are students who spent their formative years in the Junior School, so to see them as the confident young adults they now are, is both humbling and inspiring in equal measures. As has now become tradition, as Year 12 filed out of their final assembly in Dunnet Hall, our P-6 students and teachers formed a wonderful guard of honour for them that snaked its way up through the Prep playground and into the piazza area.

The beautiful words spoken from Yr 12 students and teachers at the two events spoke volumes about the personal connections and relationships that form between teachers and students and can be so impactful and last long after students leave us. We can all remember those teachers, right?

I wish this group of students all the very best as they prepare for their final examinations next term and thank them for their leadership this past year, some of which has been very visible on our campus too.

OOSH – R U OK?

In our OOSH after school group last Thursday, the students were involved in a delightful activity connected to the relevance of R U OK? Day.

The students were asked them to take a balloon and write their name on it. They then tossed their balloons around until they were all mixed up. The students were given thirty seconds to find the balloon with their name on it but only two were able to find their own balloon. The educator then told them to take the balloon closest to them and give it to the person whose name was on it. In less than ten seconds, everyone was holding their own balloon.

The educator then explained the aim of the activity with the balloons representing happiness. We won’t find it when we’re only searching for our own. But if we care about someone else’s happiness…it will ultimately help us find our own.

We asked them “What makes you happy?” Some of them answered:

Ripley:              Family, friends and games
Jakob:               Family and Roblox
Toni:                 Being with my friends and family and food
Allegra:             My family, friends and my dog
Alice:                My family and my creations
Amy:                Roblox and friends
Daniel:              Roblox, playing with my friends in the afternoon
Blake:               Games, my mum and dad and friends
Fletcher:           Family and sports

Parent Survey

Response requested by Friday 6 October

As a School we continue to pursue a journey that positions Redlands as a leading contemporary and innovative school inspiring students to adapt, create and thrive in our complex global community.

At the heart of this journey is our community. We recognise the vital role our wider community plays in the growth and prosperity of Redlands and remain committed to providing opportunities for feedback on our performance. With this in mind, we are inviting you to complete a short survey of your feedback.  The survey should only take a few minutes, is anonymous, does not collect any personally identifiable information. Thank you for your consideration and contribution within this important process that can be completed here.

Time for a Break

I do hope that the two-week break provides students and families with quality time to rest and recharge. Redlands is a busy school, as it should be, so the down time is particularly important for both students and teachers to return energised for the final term of 2023.

We look forward to welcoming the students back for Term 4 on Monday 9 October and a reminder that summer uniform is expected and blazers optional.

Nyumbar Visit

Last Friday we welcomed Deslyn and Isaac from Nyumbar, a family owned and run Aboriginal business based in Sydney that offers a range of culturally appropriate and safe educational programs for schools, students, and staff to learn about and engage in Aboriginal culture.

After conducting a smoking ceremony with the cohort to release any negative energy, Des and Issac shared with us that they were proud Bundjalung people from the Fingal and Tweed Heads area in Northern New South Wales.

Deslyn spent time with our Year 1 and Kindergarten students throughout the day. Students learnt and handled hunting and gathering artefacts, what ochre face paint designs meant and how Aboriginal people used animals for food, shelter and clothing. All the staff commented on how much we all learnt from Des and Isaac.

Our staff and students were so engaged as they listened about the importance of passing on of information and culture through storytelling. Throughout the day, Isaac and all the students created a painting that represented the Aboriginal land on which our school stands. Here is the story of our Redlands Preparatory School painting that now hangs proudly in our reception area. Please come and have a look.

The Redlands painting is a contemporary Aboriginal artwork that pays respect to the Aboriginal people and land on which your school stands. The Cammeraygal.

The symbol in the centre of the artwork is an Aboriginal symbol for a meeting place and can also be used as a symbol for the Sun.

This symbol represents Redlands School, a place you all come to learn and play. This symbol also represents your school motto “Let your light shine”.

The blue sections in the artwork symbolise the waterways. The Cammeraygal people were hunter fishers. The waterways provided an abundance of fresh seafood, fish, shellfish, and crustaceans.

Fishing spears were often used when hunting water animals. These animals provided food and resources to the local Aboriginal people.

The Green sections represent the land. The land of the Cammeraygal people hunted animals such as kangaroos and emus and gathered a variety of different fruits, seeds, and vegetables. These animals and plants also provided food, resources for tools and weapons and medicines.

The hunting boomerang, shields, coolamon, and dilly bag symbolise the men, women, boys, and girls at Redlands School.

Snowsports End of Year Awards

I was thrilled to receive news this week that a few of our Prep students were recognised at the 2023 Snowsport end of season award ceremony this week.

A big congratulations to Jemima Joyce (Kindy Blue) who was excited to be awarded the Redlands Division 6 Girls Alpine Skiing Champion. Jonathan Burton was awarded the Division 6 Boys Alpine Skiing Champion. Saskia Williams was also commended for attending the NSW Interschool Championships for Ski Cross. Well done and we are all very proud of these students and all those students who had a go and competed.

What a Great Term

As always in the last week of a term, we take time to stop and reflect on the term that was and start to plan and get excited about the term ahead. I would very much like to take this opportunity to thank all our families and carers this term for all your support, conversations and daily smiling faces. I am grateful to those parents who have been able to come and help in classrooms, lunchtime clubs and at different events that we have had this term. It has been an important term of connection, and I look forward to it continuing into next term.

Your children, as always, have been fabulous, humorous, courageous, responsible, self-reflective and most of all, have developed and grown this term into more independent and resilient little people.

Kindness and compassion have been a focal point this term in assemblies and in wellbeing conversations. Each day I see and hear more and more children using words to demonstrate kindness to friends but also, I witness more inclusive and respectful behaviours from our youngest of learners. I can only be excited about Term 4 and all that it will bring.

A Few Reminders

Term 4 will commence on Monday 9 October and students are to return in their summer uniforms. Please, please, please ensure your child has a bucket hat and that it is named. Having sunscreen applied before school would be helpful, students will be able to reapply before going out to recess and lunch.

Can I also remind families that if you are planning to take your child out of school for any holidays, approval must be sought from me. Thank you for respecting our processes.

In the Prep School we celebrate birthdays with students choosing and wearing a birthday cape, birthday pencils, stickers, and a special certificate. We ask that any birthday cakes and party food be kept for outside of school please.

There are a few sad items that have not been claimed in lost property this term. Lost clothing, lunch boxes and drink bottles can be found on the bench to the right of Reception.

Baby News

We were very excited to hear that Mrs Gilroy had her second baby on Friday and it’s a girl! Congratulation to Beth and Luke on the safe arrival of Billee, a lovely baby sister for Archie. We wish them all the best and hope they enjoy this special time.

Toys at Preschool

We are blessed with beautiful resources at Redlands House, so we encourage the children to please leave toys at home. They can become lost or broken whilst at Preschool. If your child has a special item to share for News, please leave this with your class teacher in the morning. Photos and videos on Storypark is the best way for the children to share for News. We have discussed this matter with the children. We thank you for your support.

Secondary Sport

As we move through sports and students begin to receive their pockets and awards it is important that we are setting and upholding high standards across sports, these standards have far-reaching benefits that extend beyond the field/court of play. These standards instill a sense of accountability and responsibility in young athletes, teaching them to honor commitments, respect teammates and opponents and accept victory and defeat with grace.

When we as a school maintain these high standards, it helps create a sense of pride and identity within sports communities. Players, coaches, parents and even fans rally around shared values fostering a strong sense of belonging and unity. This sense of community can have a positive influence on the personal development of young athletes, helping them build social skills, develop leadership qualities and form lifelong friendships. Our School Sports programs provide a unique platform for imparting essential life lessons, the students work through perseverance, teamwork and resilience and by upholding these standards ensures that these valuable life lessons are consistently reinforced, helping young athletes become well-rounded individuals capable of facing challenges in all aspects of life.

We are setting these standards in sport and upholding them throughout the programs, as sport is not just about excelling on the field/court but also about nurturing well-rounded, responsible and resilient individuals. contributing to the development of positive values, a sense of community and character education ultimately helping with creating the future generations into better people.

‘Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender. That is strength’

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Bus Transport

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Congratulations to all our Football and Rugby students from Years 3 through to Year 6 who have been participating in the Redlands World Cup over the last 6 weeks. The concept of mixed graded teams made up students in both Rugby and Football representing a country who participated at the recent World Cup was embraced wholeheartedly. There were some big upsets and, with 6 teams tied on 26 points on the leaderboard, there was some fierce competition on the day. Congratulations to USA on beating Canada in the final. USA was coached by Hans Wong and Canada Ben Morton. In our Girls AFL mini–World Cup, Chile came out victors beating Scotland and Thailand. Thank you to all our coaches who have facilitated both programs over the last 7 weeks.

Well done to all on their participation and enthusiasm.

Jumping For Joy at the End of Term 3!

Wow, it’s the end of Term 3 already and Ms Amanda’s Friday Kindergarten Ballet class were perfecting their skipping and jumping at last week’s class. Beautiful work everyone.

View Video Here

It really has been a busy and successful term at Redlands Dance Academy. Not only did we change our name, perform on the Sydney Opera House Stage, complete our RAD exams and enjoy an incredible evening at the Dance Awards, but we have almost finished our End of Year Performance pieces and are gearing up for our first ever ISTD exams.

Term Dates

For a list of Important Dates for Term 4 please see our Pulse page.

End of Year Performance (EoYP) Rehearsals

There is much to be done to ensure that we have a fabulous time at the Chatswood Concourse on 15 and 16 November.

Holiday Rehearsals (4-6 October)

We are looking forward to seeing you at the Holiday Rehearsals where we will be piecing together some of the moments where there is more than one group dancing together. We ask for your patience in these rehearsals as there will be a lot of you in the studio and much choreography to be created in a short period of time.

For further information please see our Holiday Rehearsals Pulse page.

Sunday Rehearsal (15 October)

We also have our first Sunday Rehearsal Schedule up on the EoYP Pulse Page. Please look and ensure that you can make these times. This rehearsal will be used for students to understand where their dances are in their performances and will be a very good indication for teachers on what needs to be worked on leading up to the shows.

Friends of Dance (FoD)

Parents, please look out for communication from our wonderful Friends of Dance regarding volunteering. There are lots of ways you can get involved in the preparation process with upcoming Sewing Bee’s and hair and make-up prep before the shows. Information will be up on the FoD Pulse page soon.

ISTD Exams

For those of you preparing for the ISTD exams, please look on the ISTD Pulse page for extra rehearsal. Dates, times and groups for the Exams will be posted very soon.

Dance Curriculum

YEAR 12 HSC + IB DANCE

Farewell to our amazing Year 12 Dance students. We wish you all the best for your future endeavours and thank you for your commitment and leadership throughout your time at Redlands. We can’t wait to see you shine in all you do!

Year 8, 9 and 10 Dance Excursion to WICKED

Last Thursday Years 8-10 Dance Curriculum students attended Wicked the Musical. What a night! I thoroughly enjoyed this musical from the dancing and singing to all of the special effects. It was also a wonderful opportunity for all of the dance students to come together and enjoy the musical. Wicked totally lives up to its Broadway hype. They take the Wizard of Oz story and give it this cool twist that makes you see those familiar characters in a whole new light. It’s like meeting old friends all over again, but with a fun, unexpected twist – Imogen Jeffery-Billich

Our Years 10-11 Cocurricular Drama Production presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Term 4 at the Zenith Theatre at Chatswood, 1920’s style! A Midsummer Night’s Dream: the tale of Hermia, Demetrius, Lysander, and Helena; four misguided lovers who’s journey into the woods lands them in even more trouble, as members of the fairy kingdom decide to use them as veritable pawns in their own love games. Against the backdrop of the wedding of Duke Theseus and Hippolyta, and the fiery battle of wills between the Fairy King and Queen, Oberon and Titania, the four lovers are challenged by magic and trickery to finally work out what love is all about.
