Year 11
Yr 11 – Term 2
Welcome back. I hope you all had a lovely Easter. We have hit the ground running this term with our ANZAC Service on the first day back which was really well received by our students and provided them with another opportunity to reflect and gain perspective. It is already shaping up to a busy term but I am confident that our Yr 11s are finding that balance between work, rest and play. This term also provides our Yr 11s with many opportunities to volunteer for various activities and also to start to think about leadership roles within school for Yr 12.

Nepal Trip
“During the holidays, a group of ten teenagers from Australia, England and Switzerland (including Laura Whelan and myself) participated in a Global Youth Leadership and Adventure Summit in Nepal! First, we went trekking in the Annapurna ranges, part of the Himalayas, attempting to summit Mardi Himal base camp at 4500m. However, after incredible amounts of snow blocked the trail, we were forced to turn around at just over 4,000 metres, nonetheless we witnessed the most breathtaking view we had ever seen. We then headed over to BBAS Memorial School in Bardia, a remote area of Western Nepal. At the School, we engaged in physical labour activities such as plastering and painting of the new toilet block. The funds for the building of this we helped raise in our various fundraising activities inside and outside of school. We were also teaching the kids across a broad range of topics from Handball to Australian History and Laura even used the building and throwing of paper aeroplanes to explain Newton’s laws of motion in a Physics class. Other than learning about the fascinating different culture and way of life, we also learnt the importance of being adaptable and resilient whilst travelling and also in life. Overall it was an incredible trip with magnificent views, amazing people, stunning wildlife and fabulous new friendships.” Aymon Holth
Melbourne University Tour and Wayside Chapel Trips
We had a number of students who travelled to Melbourne to visit Monash University, University of Melbourne and RMIT with Ms Salier and Ms Wang and our Yr 11 students had a fantastic time. We also had a number of students travel to the Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross with Ms Coleman and Mr Atkins for an insight into how facilities like Wayside are helping those less fortunate than most. Our students learned a lot from the experience and I think it gave them a new sense of the hardship many people face in Australia.
Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection
The Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection can be viewed for the first time at Redlands. The Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years, is a remarkable collection of artworks which provides a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty, Lindy Lee amongst others.
Parents will also have an opportunity to meet Cameron Robbins, the contemporary artist who is leading the 2019 Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence (RKMAIR) program. Cameron will be at Redlands 6-17 May working with students and staff creating a site responsive artwork on the Senior Campus.
Tickets available here. Drinks and canapés will be served during the evening. This is a parent only event. For more information, please visit our website.
Red Shield Appeal
The Salvo’s Red Shield Door Knock is coming up on 29 May. The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army’s signature fundraising drive which helps fund their vast network of social and community services.
The Red Shield Appeal began in 1965 and is promoted under their recognisable symbol – the red shield. Each year, The Salvation Army appeals to the Australian community for donations to ensure we can give hope where it is needed most through our social welfare and community service programs.
Every year a small army of Redlands Yr 11 students conduct the door knock around our local Cremorne community. We will be looking for about 100 students to team up into groups of four. They will be allocated a zone with specific streets to cover. We meet at school on Sunday 29 May at 8.30am and, after completing their territory, they return to school to bank the funds and have a BBQ. Please encourage your child to participate.
