From the Principal

It has been good to see students back at school this week following what I hope was a relaxing Easter, with beautiful autumnal weather locally for those who stayed at home.

Sean Corcoran and I joined two of our student leaders at the ANZAC Dawn Service at Georges Heights with a large crowd of others, where our students laid a wreath. Two others similarly laid a wreath at the North Sydney ANZAC Service. The Secondary School held an ANZAC Memorial Service in Dunnet Hall on Tuesday.

Our Year 12 students are sitting half-yearly exams this week and next at North Sydney Leagues Club, so a number of our younger students had the opportunity to play roles at the Redlands ANZAC Service.

With the Winter Sports program commencing this weekend, I wish to advise parents whose children are playing their Winter home games at Macquarie University Playing Fields that there will be a reversion to paid parking at the Sports fields as part of a whole of campus change. Parents who are coming along to support their sons or daughters should read carefully the following:

Notice of Macquarie University Sport Field parking changes from 1 May 2019

In October last year, Macquarie University moved to a digital parking platform across the campus and at the same time, introduced paid parking for all Sport and Aquatic Centre users. As part of this change, paid parking will also be applied to the Sport Fields as the last stage in this strategy.

As of 1 May, all parking at the sport fields will attract a fee of $1.50 per hour.

Important meetings occurred during the two week vacation and I expect to be able to deliver news very soon as to the resumption of construction on the Senior Campus. There were many works tasks done over the break on both campuses by our Facilities team and other contractors, and it was wonderful to see the new playing field on the Junior Campus being used by the students. It looks a picture and provides a fine surface that will withstand use and weather.

Celebration of Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection & Artist In Residence

We are delighted to present The Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection at Redlands.

The Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years, is a remarkable collection of artworks that provides a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty, Lindy Lee amongst others.

Cameron is a well-regarded contemporary artist based in Melbourne. His installations reflect a deep interest in the elements, and the resulting work seeks to make tangible the underlying structures and rhythms of natural forces. Cameron has worked extensively in Australia, most recently at MONA, creating a site responsive artwork that is currently on permanent exhibition. Having worked with many schools, Cameron is very interested in education and children having access to first hand experiences of working with an artist. He will work with Redlands students and staff creating a site responsive artwork, connecting with the natural conditions and the built landscape, including the current redevelopment on the Senior Campus.

Head of Secondary School

Term 2 Welcome

It has been wonderful to see the students return this week and hear their excited greetings and their laughter ringing through the playground. Our Yr 12 HSC and IB students are sitting their Half-Yearly Assessments and Examinations offsite for the first two weeks of this term and we wish them all the best during these assessments of their learning. It was a busy holiday period for many of our students who traveled to Arnhem Land on our Service Learning trip, who travelled to Melbourne for visits to universities or who participated in the Winter Sports Camp at Berry. It sounds like all of these have been fulfilling and enjoyable experiences for our students and I would like to thank the teachers and staff who organised these trips for them. It was also a great pleasure to see a number of staff, parents and students at the ANZAC Dawn Service at Georges Heights or North Sydney in the holidays, where the School was represented.

On Monday, Judith Locke returned to Redlands to follow up with staff on the talks she gave to parents and staff last term as part of our Professional Learning Day. She shared further research on responsible parenting and emphasised how parents and schools need to work in partnership to ensure that students achieve their best while at school and are best prepared for life after school. Much of what she said further supports our vision of inspiring girls and boys to achieve “life-readiness” by learning to deal with mistakes, disappointments and challenges. She discussed how the ideal of “authoritative parenting”, where parents balance high demandingness with high responsiveness, is mirrored in schools by “authoritative teaching” where we balance high expectations with high support. I look forward to sharing more from her presentations in future Note Day entries.

On Tuesday morning, we held our own Secondary School ANZAC Service in Dunnet Hall. It was a moving and poignant service of music, reflections, history and powerful messages, punctuated by an address by our guest speakers Lieutenant Colonel Colin Morrison, Lieutenant Colonel Karen Such and Reverend Tim St Quintin, focusing on the sacrifice and service of those who serve in the armed forces. I thank everyone who made this Service such a special start to the term.

Congratulations

Regularly, our students are acknowledged for their wonderful achievements and I would like to draw attention to two recent acknowledgements we have received. A number of our sailors competed in the Australia Schools Sailing Championships over the holidays and we would like to congratulate Ella Delaney (Yr 9) for winning the Sportsmanship Award in this prestigious event.

In addition, congratulations to Ben Kittle in Yr 12 who has have achieved a place as a finalist in the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize. The prize was established in 2007 and is a national competition that awards and promotes Australian contemporary photography. Ben’s photographic work Du Cane Hut, Overland Track, Tasmania made it into the final 25 from over 6000 entries. The Moran Prize will be exhibited at Juniper Hall, 250 Oxford St, Paddington from 4 May to 2 June and the overall winner of his category will be announced 7 May.

Study in the USA Information Evening

Redlands is proud to once again host the Study in the USA Information Evening on Monday 6 May from 5.30-7.30pm. Representatives from over 30 American universities will be in attendance to not only share specific information on their universities, but to also give students and parents valuable insights on the process of applying to American universities. I would encourage families who are thinking about applying to American universities in the future to attend this excellent event.

Parent Event: Professor Tim Flannery Presentation

To launch our National Careers Week in Week 3, Redlands invites all parents and students to a presentation by eminent scientist and 2007 Australian of the Year, Professor Tim Flannery. Professor Flannery will be giving a 30 minute presentation on the topic: Where are the jobs in the future clean economy? followed by a Q & A session. He has been recently appointed to the Australian Museum as Distinguished Visiting Fellow in Climate Change and the presentation focuses on the need for science and innovation in a whole of economy transformation as we address climate change.

This special event will take place on Monday 13 May at 6.30pm in Redlands Hall. We look forward to seeing you there.

Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence 2019

Redlands is excited and honoured to have esteemed contemporary artist, Cameron Robbins, as our Artist in Residence in Weeks 2 and 3 of Term 2. Not only will Cameron will be working with students during this time, but he will also be creating a site responsive artwork on the Senior Campus. We will be hosting a celebration of Cameron Robbins and the Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection on Thursday 16 May from 6.00-8.30pm at the John Roberts Centre. The Collection was created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years and is a remarkable collection of artworks which provides a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty and Lindy Lee, amongst others. We hope to see you at this special event which will showcase many works from this collection.

Important NSW Transport Information

As noted in my letter over the holidays, the School has been informed by Transport NSW that the Hampden Ave bus stop on Military Rd has now been closed from 6.00-10.00am on weekdays to add an extra city bound lane in the mornings to ease congestion and help improve citybound traffic flow. Students who previously alighted at this stop should now alight at Neutral Bay Junction Stand D, which is two minutes walking distance from the current stop, or at the Spencer Road bus stop before Murdoch Street. Unfortunately, students will now need to walk across additional roads to arrive at the Senior Campus and we urge students to use extreme caution when crossing any road. While we have teachers on duty at some crossings, we are unable monitor all of these. To ensure the safety of our students with this Transport NSW bus stop change, please note the following:

  1. Students are still NOT permitted to cross Military Rd at the lights at Murdoch St after alighting from buses to get to the Senior Campus. They should always use the footbridge to cross Military Rd.
  2. Parents are NOT to drop their children at the top of Hampden Ave in the mornings as there will be more students crossing Hampden Ave. Parents should drop off students at the designated School drop off zones on Winnie St, Waters Rd or around the Junior Campus.

Please note the Hampden Ave bus stop will still remain operational for afternoon bus services.

Winter Sports and Macquarie Parking

We wish students all the best as they fully commence their winter sports seasons this weekend. Please also note that in October last year, Macquarie University moved to a digital parking platform across the campus and at the same time, introduced paid parking for all Sport and Aquatic Centre users. As part of this change, paid parking will also be applied to the Sport Fields as the last stage in this strategy. As of 1 May, all parking at the sport fields will attract a fee of $1.50 per hour. Further information can be found in the Sports section of Note Day.

Winter Uniform

A reminder that students should be in proper winter uniform for Terms 2 and 3. Please ensure students continue to take pride in their uniform by wearing their blazers to and from school. Also, a reminder that girls should have skirts with a “hem falling to the top of the knees” and that boys should have hair that is cut “away from the eyes, ears and collar and a style that is neat and conservative” and “no hair dye is permitted”. Students and parents can refer to the Student Planner (p. 19-22) and Redlands Pulse for further information.

Service and Social Engagement

It was great to see several examples of students and teachers engaged with community and Service activities during the recent school holidays. Despite the holiday period, we maintained are regular Monday morning breakfast shifts at St Vincent de Paul’s Matthew Talbot Hostel. Each Monday of the holidays, our Yr 11 volunteers and teachers turned up at school in the dark early hours of the morning and made their way to the Hostel in Woolloomooloo to assist in setting up the dining room for breakfast service and cleaning up afterwards. This continuity of support ensures that the Matthew Talbot staff can depend on us, even during non-school weeks and don’t have to find last minute volunteers to fill our regular shifts.

A small group of Yr 11 students also attended a morning session at the Wayside Chapel to learn about the work they do and the different approach they take to supporting the homeless community in Potts Point and Kings Cross.

Students from the Redlands student leadership team also represented the school and attended the Dawn Services at Georges Heights and North Sydney.

23 Yr 10 students also had a wonderful, immersive cultural experience visiting the indigenous Yolngu community in Arnhem Land. This is a unique and rewarding experience that provides a significant opportunity to connect in a meaningful way with this community and learn from them about their unique and ancient cultural practices. Ms Riley and Mr Taylor have returned singing the praises of our students and their capacity to engage in this transformative experiences.

The start of Term 2 sees both the Fiji and Cambodia teams meeting for workshops at school to begin their exploration of the history and cultures of the countries they are travelling to. These mandatory workshops provide students with an opportunity to make their trip a meaningful and enriching experience.

This event is happening on the last Thursday night of the term. Students will be sleeping over at school and hearing from some thought-provoking speakers. The following morning we will plan some practical actions students can take to contribute to improving the circumstances of people living on the fringe in our community.

Yr 11 – Term 2

Welcome back. I hope you all had a lovely Easter. We have hit the ground running this term with our ANZAC Service on the first day back which was really well received by our students and provided them with another opportunity to reflect and gain perspective. It is already shaping up to a busy term but I am confident that our Yr 11s are finding that balance between work, rest and play. This term also provides our Yr 11s with many opportunities to volunteer for various activities and also to start to think about leadership roles within school for Yr 12.

Yr 12 (2020) School Jersey – Available to be Purchased

All students have access to the form on the Yr 11 Pastoral page on iLearn and parents can access the form on Redlands Pulse. The form must be completed and returned to the Uniform Shop by Friday 17 May at the latest. Students can try on different sizes by visiting the Uniform Shop outside of school hours.

Student Achievement

Congratulations to Madeleine Howard who competed with the NSW U17/19 Girls 1stVIII at the Edward Trickett Regatta at the Sydney International Rowing Centre. They finished 5th in a very competitive field.

Nepal Trip

“During the holidays, a group of ten teenagers from Australia, England and Switzerland (including Laura Whelan and myself) participated in a Global Youth Leadership and Adventure Summit in Nepal! First, we went trekking in the Annapurna ranges, part of the Himalayas, attempting to summit Mardi Himal base camp at 4500m. However, after incredible amounts of snow blocked the trail,  we were forced to turn around at just over 4,000 metres, nonetheless we witnessed the most breathtaking view we had ever seen. We then headed over to BBAS Memorial School in Bardia, a remote area of Western Nepal. At the School, we engaged in physical labour activities such as plastering and painting of the new toilet block. The funds for the building of this we helped raise in our various fundraising activities inside and outside of school. We were also teaching the kids across a broad range of topics from Handball to Australian History and Laura even used the building and throwing of paper aeroplanes to explain Newton’s laws of motion in a Physics class. Other than learning about the fascinating different culture and way of life, we also learnt the importance of being adaptable and resilient whilst travelling and also in life. Overall it was an incredible trip with magnificent views, amazing people, stunning wildlife and fabulous new friendships.” Aymon Holth

Melbourne University Tour and Wayside Chapel Trips

We had a number of students who travelled to Melbourne to visit Monash University, University of Melbourne and RMIT with Ms Salier and Ms Wang and our Yr 11 students had a fantastic time. We also had a number of students travel to the Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross with Ms Coleman and Mr Atkins for an insight into how facilities like Wayside are helping those less fortunate than most. Our students learned a lot from the experience and I think it gave them a new sense of the hardship many people face in Australia.

Red Shield Appeal

The Salvo’s Red Shield Door Knock is coming up on 29 May. The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army’s signature fundraising drive which helps fund their vast network of social and community services.

The Red Shield Appeal began in 1965 and is promoted under their recognisable symbol – the red shield. Each year, The Salvation Army appeals to the Australian community for donations to ensure we can give hope where it is needed most through our social welfare and community service programs.

Every year a small army of Redlands Yr 11 students conduct the door knock around our local Cremorne community. We will be looking for about 100 students to team up into groups of four. They will be allocated a zone with specific streets to cover. We meet at school on Sunday 29 May at 8.30am and, after completing their territory, they return to school to bank the funds and have a BBQ. Please encourage your child to participate.

The community were very impressed by the articulate and thoughtful contributions delivered by these students.

RKMAiR – Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence

The Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection can be viewed on the Senior Campus as part of this year’s Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence Program on Thursday evening 16 May, from 6.00-8.30 pm. The Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years, is a remarkable collection of artworks which provide a unique and valuable teaching tool. The collection includes artworks from notable Australian Contemporary artists Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty, Lindy Lee amongst others.

Parents will also have an opportunity to meet Australian Contemporary artist Cameron Robbins, who is leading the Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence (RKMAIR) program in 2019. Cameron Robbins will be at Redlands 6-17 May working with students and staff through the creation of a site responsive artwork on the Senior Campus.

Tickets available here. Drinks and canapés will be served during the evening. This is a parent only event. For more information, please visit our website.

Uniform

As per Mr Corcoran’s Term 2 Welcome Letter, I reiterate the School’s expectations for student uniform. Please could I request that you help to ensure that students are in proper winter uniform to start the term and that their appearance complies with our dress expectations (as outlined in the Student Planner and in the Uniform section of Redlands Pulse). Please ensure that hem lengths are appropriate (girls’ dress lengths should be on the knee) and boys’ hair is cut so that it is off the collar and neat and tidy. A reminder that students are required to wear their blazers to and from school during Terms 2 and 3. Students will receive infringements for hair and uniform if not rectified by the commencement of Week 2 of this term.

Pre-Winter Representative Sports Camp in Berry

Mr Walker took a number of our Yr 10 students to Berry during the second week of the school holidays for the Pre-Winter Representative Sports Camp. The Camp was located at Berry Sport and Rec and students were able to enjoy the fresh air and rural environment of the 100 acre property. Key skills such as strategy, communication and collaboration were developed through skill based training and fitness activities. Mr Walker commented upon how well behaved and engaged our Yr 10 students were.

Year 9

Welcome back to Term 2! I hope you have all had a restful and happy time as a family and that your child has returned back to Redlands refreshed. It is certainly great to see them all again. We had such a busy first term, ending with an amazing camp. Term 2 is also very busy but a bit shorter as it is only 9 weeks.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please read

Teachers returned to Redlands on Monday, and spent the majority of the professional development day led by Dr Judith Locke, author of The Bonsai Child. She enlightened us on many issues, in particular how parenting has changed considerably over recent years and how that impacts the school environment. The interesting article this week is based on this concept and the 60 Minutes episode from last Sunday that some of you may have seen.

Camp

I am sure your child returned home thoroughly exhausted at the end of camp in Week 11! I hope they enjoyed the experience, and also learnt many life skills and developed new friendships and respect for each other. There has been overwhelmingly positive feedback from both the teachers/Tutors and the Outdoor Education Group leaders who ran each group. Feedback that has been received has demonstrated the caring nature the students showed to each other and their Tutors, the willingness to get involved in everything, and the leadership skills developed over the course of the week. It was heart-warming to hear these comments.

Commerce Market Day Fundraising

Yr 9 Commerce students were able to raise almost $3600 on Market Day last term, which was distributed to a few worthwhile organisations such as Room to Read and Guide Dogs Australia. This is a fantastic achievement and something the whole Year Group should be very proud of.

NAPLAN

Yr 9 students are expected to participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) to assess literacy and numeracy skills. Testing will take place on Tuesday 14 May (Language Conventions and Writing), Wednesday 15 May (Reading), and Thursday 16 May (Numeracy) from 11.05am to 2.35pm. Students need to bring a school calculator on Thursday 16 May for the Numeracy Test part A that requires a calculator. Students will be provided a pencil to complete all tests. Further information about NAPLAN can be found in the NAPLAN parent information brochure. Following the tests, all parents across Australia will receive results in a common reporting format. It is important for you and your child to know that NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test. It simply looks at what level students are achieving in literacy and numeracy against National Standards and compared with student peers throughout Australia. More information is available on the National Assessment Program website.

Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection

The Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection can be viewed for the first time at Redlands. The Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive prize over 22 years, is a remarkable collection of artworks which provides a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty, and Lindy Lee amongst others. Parents will also have an opportunity to meet Cameron Robbins, the contemporary artist who is leading the Redlands Konica Minolta Artist in Residence (RKMAIR) program 2019. Cameron will be at Redlands 6-17 May, working with students and staff creating a site responsive artwork on the Senior Campus. Tickets are available here. Drinks and canapés will be served during the evening. This is a parent only event. For more information, please visit our website.

Uniform

Students across all Year Groups have been spoken to by senior staff this week about the expectations for winter school uniform. They are aware of the regulations as set out in the Student Planner and some have been spoken to about the need for changes, such as haircuts, removing jewellery, wearing long-sleeved shirts for the boys and needing longer skirts for the girls. Please have a conversation with your child over the weekend to ensure they are meeting the uniform expectations.

I hope you have a great week.

Camp Anaphylaxis and Asthma

If your child is Anaphylactic or has Asthma (including mild), you must ensure the following:

  • Anaphylaxis: TWO Epipens must be provided by home and brought on the program.
  • Asthma: A double dose of all required medication for the participant’s asthma must be brought on the program. If Ventolin or any other type of inhaler is required TWO must be supplied on the program.

Staff will be checking that the correct dosage has been provided the morning of departure.

Camp Tips and Hints

Many students are very excited about camp next week. Others, may approach the week with some apprehension. If you notice some signs of nerves, don’t panic – nerves are a completely normal part of life and if nurtured appropriately contribute to our young people flourishing into balanced adults. Wondering how you can assist at home? Here are some quick tips & hints:

  • Keep communication casual. Unless raised by your child, don’t speak about the worries of camp. This can only polarise concerns or create worries that weren’t there. Students take their lead from adults – if we’re stressed, they’re stressed.
  • Make a list of things to pack.
  • Pack a small item of comfort such as favourite PJs, drawing pad, a book etc. NOTE: No electronics.
  • Packing small games to promote positive social interaction eg. elastics, hacky sack, Uno, snap etc.
  • Adjusting language: ‘You may feel nervous but I know that you can overcome it’.

Strategies to manage worries at camp:

  • Focusing on one day at a time
  • Keeping busy with tasks and activities
  • Playing card games with group members
  • Thinking of things that make me happy/things I’m grateful for
  • Talking to new people

Camp is a valued part of the Redlands curriculum. Our cohort had a fantastic experience at Yr 7 camp last year and we look forward to another week filled with new experiences, challenges and growth next week. I’ve included some images from Yr 7 Camp.

Study Skills – Quick Tip

Negative Mindset / Attitude

Henry Ford once famously said, “whether you believe you can, or you can’t, you are right”. This refers to your mindset or mental attitude, and the concept that your mind is powerful enough to enable your thoughts to create your reality. If you have a negative attitude to your memory, it will likely reduce your chance of developing and maintaining a good memory. There are some simple steps you can take to start making changes to negative thoughts. Be aware that negative thoughts are just a habit, and habits can be changed with a little effort. Awareness is the key to changing a habit, as you need to consciously be aware of the current habit before you can change it – so start catching yourself in the act of making negative statements. Affirm your intention to improve the way you think. Then correct the negative statement you just made, and make it into a more positive one. Learn more at the Brain and Memory unit of www.studyskillshandbook.com.au. Our school’s subscription details are Username: redlands, Password: 68results

Announcements and Upcoming Events
  • We are incorporating a lot of conversations around students taking pride in their own appearance and their belongings. Students are reminded to revisit the guidelines for proper uniform on pages 19 and 20 of the Student Planner. There are also many belongings being left around the student lockers, in common areas at recess and lunch and in the restrooms.  Students should be locking all personal items in their lockers throughout the day. Lockers can hold a backpack and students should be locking their bags inside their locker. Students are encouraged to ask a teacher for assistance if they are needing support with their physical organisation.
  • Students have completed a Term Wall Planner this week. Students may access their Yr 7 Assessment Booklet through iLearn for guidance and this same document is available to parents through the Parent Portal Redlands Pulse. Please look out for this wall planner and encourage your child to refer to it and use it throughout the term for successful preparation and planning.
  • The Redlands Konica Minolta Art Prize Collection can be viewed for the first time at Redlands. The Collection, created as a direct result of the acquisitive Prize over 22 years, is a remarkable collection of artworks which provides a unique and valuable teaching tool and includes pieces from Imants Tillers, Ben Quilty, Lindy Lee amongst others. Drinks and canapés will be served during the evening. This is a parent only event. For more information, please visit our website.
  • Yr 7 Naplan Literacy and Numeracy tests will occur 13, 14 and 15 May.  Students will discuss further details regarding the content of these tests in their respective classes
  • To help reduce the weight of backpacks, students are encouraged to go to their lockers after Periods 2, 4 and 6. They are encouraged to determine what needs to go home at those times to avoid the mad rush at the end of the day and then resort to taking more items than necessary home with them. Students will most likely be using the electronic version of textbooks at home and keeping their hard copy at school to use in classes.
  • Learning Management Alerts on Fridays – these emails are sent to parents, students and Tutors to identify any outstanding work that may be completed over the weekend to help students stay on top of their learning.  These alerts are issued after a discussion and reminder from the classroom teacher has already been attempted. These are initiated by the classroom teachers yet sent through the Year Advisor. Please contact the issuing teacher for any subjects specific clarification.
  • Other upcoming key dates:
    • 6 June – Winter Sport Photos
    • 12 June – Yr 10 Vaccinations, catch ups for Yr 7

Head of Junior School

Welcome Back

Welcome back to Term 2 and I trust that you have all enjoyed a restful break over these past two weeks. I know a number of our students were involved in holiday Netball, Football and Dance programs here at School in the first week before the Easter weekend and I thank coaches and teachers involved in facilitating these.

The students have returned with great excitement and energy and the staff and I look forward to guiding and supporting them in the term ahead.

ANZAC Day Services

With ANZAC Day during the holiday period, we spent some time at our final Junior School assembly of Term 1 reflecting on the significance of this date and our Concert Band played a wonderful piece entitled The New Anzacs by Brian Hogg to commemorate our Service.

Then, last Thursday, I was privileged to attend the Dawn Service at Mosman, where Redlands Secondary students laid a wreath of remembrance as one of our School Board Directors, Reverend Tim St Quintin, played a prominent role in the Service. In amongst the large crowd, it was also lovely to see many Redlands families also present.

As we returned this week, Junior School Captains, Aneke Golowenko and Krishna Gupta, and I were invited to attend the Secondary School ANZAC Service, where it was wonderful to hear from students and special guests, Lieutenant Colonel Karen Such, Lieutenant Colonel Colin Morrison and Reverend Tim St Quintin, who serves as an Army Chaplain, about their roles in the Armed Forces and the history of the ANZACs.

Baby News

During the holidays, we were thrilled to hear of the safe arrival of baby Arla Michael, a second daughter for our Junior School Sports Administrator, Mrs Gemma Michael. Gemma and Arla are home and well and we look forward to a visit from them later in the term.

Staffing News

As mentioned at the end of last term, this week we have been delighted to welcome Mrs Danielle Vita (Music) and Mr Brad Hemopo (PDHPE) to our Junior Campus staff team. Both have already settled in and I know you will join me in welcoming them to our School community.

Redlands High Country Campus Working Bee

Over the Easter break, my family joined others from all sections of our School at the annual Easter Working Bee at the School’s High Country Campus in Jindabyne, coordinated by Redlands Board Director, Mrs Colleen Godsell AM. The High Country Campus is stunning and matched with similar weather, the weekend provided an opportunity for families to support the School with aspects of maintenance and general upkeep of the Campus as well as enjoy time to explore the Snowy Mountains region at this time of year. The long weekend also provided children from Preschool up to Yr 9 with chances to explore the outdoor environment and opportunities at the Campus and it was wonderful to see many of the older students involve themselves in aspects of the working bee. My thanks are extended to all of the families who were able to be part of this wonderful community weekend; one that I would encourage other families to consider and bookmark for next year.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

Next Friday, 10 May, sees us host our annual Mother’s Day breakfast for Junior Campus mums. We hope to see many of you in for this special event which will be held in the Piazza area around the Canteen as per the flyer below.

Student Fundraising

I was delighted to hear of a group of Yr 4 students who organised and then ran a bake sale over the holidays to raise money to help the endangered grey wolf. The idea was the brainchild of Alexander Klose who enlisted assistance from his friends Derek Hu, Lucas Law, Sergey Philips and Jay Roger. The boys had spent some lunchtimes in Term 1 discussing endangered animals and how they could help. They then spent time making posters and flyers to educate passers-by about the plight of the grey wolves and, over the holidays, the boys held a bake sale raising an incredible $217.50, which has been donated to the Defenders of Wildlife.

Winter Uniform

A reminder that we have transitioned now to Winter uniform which includes blazers being worn on a daily basis except for Wednesdays when students have Sport.

Transport NSW Information

The School has been informed by Transport NSW that the Hampden Avenue bus stop on Military Road is now closed from 6am-10am on weekdays. This has been implemented to add an extra city bound lane in the mornings to ease congestion and help improve citybound traffic flow.

Redlands students who previously alighted at this stop should now alight at Neutral Bay Junction Stand D, which is two minutes walking distance from the current stop, or at the Spencer Road bus stop before Murdoch Street. Unfortunately, students will now need to walk across additional roads to arrive at the Junior Campus and we urge students to use extreme caution when crossing any road.

Please note the Hampden Avenue bus stop will still remain operational for afternoon bus services.

Notice of Macquarie University Sport Field Parking Changes

In October last year, Macquarie University moved to a digital parking platform across the campus and at the same time, introduced paid parking for all Sport and Aquatic Centre users. As part of this change, paid parking will also be applied to the Sport Fields as the last stage in this strategy.

As of 1 May, all parking at the sport fields will attract a fee of $1.50 per hour.

Welcome to Term 2

The beginning of a new term is a chance for students, staff and families to start fresh with enthusiasm and vitality after a restful break. I would like to extend a welcome to the families joining Redlands Preparatory School this term and trust that your school journey will provide fulfillment and happiness as you explore our wonderful community. I enjoyed a lovely few days in the Pacific Islands, visiting local schools and enjoying the beautiful scenery and surrounds. Throughout my stay, I was continually reminded of how fortunate we are to live in Australia with fresh water to drink and a vast variety of healthy foods and medication at our finger tips.

The day before we welcomed the students back to school, staff came together and had the opportunity to learn once again from Dr Judith Locke as she delivered the second part of her Confident and Capable Children session. Dr Locke’s key message reinforced the notion that if caregivers take away the opportunity for children to face a world without some challenges and disappointment, they may not learn to develop resilience and the confidence to face difficulties throughout life. Continually paving a smooth path, without hurdles and road blocks for children eliminates key opportunities to learn to recover quickly from misfortune or problems. If you missed Dr Locke’s session earlier in the year and would like more information, please visit this website where Dr Locke’s book The Bonsai Child is available, or refer to the Facebook page – Confident and Capable. The five essential skills for long term success in children, which she challenges is more important than academic scores, are outlined below.

  1. Resilience – the ability to cope with difficulty
  2. Self-Regulation – foregoing current pleasure for future gain
  3. Resourcefulness – the ability to take the initiative to improve your situation
  4. Respect – for others and authority
  5. Responsibility – contributing to the community
Easter Hat Parade

It was beautiful weather to mark the annual Easter Hat Parade on the last day of Term 1. The students enjoyed parading on the refurbished oval with so many interesting and innovative hats this year. We trust families enjoyed the opportunity to view the classrooms during walk-throughs before the Parade.

Thank You From the Chaplain

A special thank you to the Preparatory School for their support of our recent Easter Egg drive that provided chocolate eggs for Wesley Missions Edward Edgar Lodge – a homeless shelter in Sydney. The eggs were delivered on Sunday morning much to the delight of the recipients. It was a joy to see how a simple token provided such warm and touching moments. The residents and visitors to the Centre enjoyed reading the cards from the students to each other. The children’s beautiful messages genuinely touched many, who often have forgotten the sweeter side of life.  We still had enough eggs to deliver to people sleeping out around the city. Our Prep Assembly charity money from Term 1 will go towards purchasing toiletries as a more practical gift for the men and women of the Lodge. The effort the students went to in class and volunteering at lunch and recess times to organise the packages certainly gives me great confidence that kindness is alive and well at Redlands.

Staff News

Congratulations to Sylvia Merlot and her husband Steve who welcomed their baby daughter, Savana Rae, on Wednesday 24 April. Savana Rae’s big sister, 4 year old Samiya, is proving to be a wonderful help already offering to babysit for them!

Get Caught Reading Month

Did you know that May is Get Caught Reading Month? It’s such a fun concept! This is a campaign to promote the excitement of reading books for all ages. As a Prep School, we will be celebrating this in some small ways in the classroom.

Parking Reminder

For families new to the School, please be aware that there is no parking on Allister Street adjacent to the Junior Campus buildings between 7.30-9.00am and 2.30-4.00pm. This zone must be kept clear to allow both car lines to operate efficiently. There will be teachers on duty from 2.45pm daily to assist with the car line process. North Sydney Council rangers patrol these areas vigilantly and will issue fines to cars who are in no parking zones. Thank you for adhering to the correct parking and car line procedures which are put in place to keep all Redlands families and members of the community safe.

Term 2 Charity

Last term, the Prep School charity raised funds to buy toiletries for people experiencing homelessness in Sydney. In Term 2, the charity focus is the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). The ILF is a national not-for-profit charity focussed on improving literacy levels in very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.Being able to read opens so many doors. In very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are so much lower than anywhere else in Australia. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s mission is to make a difference to the lives of Indigenous families by not only gifting thousands of new culturally appropriate books – with a focus on early literacy and first language – but also by running programs to inspire the communities to tell and publish their own stories”. You can read more about this organisation and what they do here

If you would like to contribute, we collect charity every Monday.

Prep Clubs

Clubs begin for Term 2 on Wednesday 8 May and finish on Wednesday 19 June. Clubs run between 3.00- 4.00pm each week and are for Yrs 1 and 2 students only. If your child’s schedule has changed and you are not going to be able to commit to your enrolled Club, please notify Mrs Hunt earlychildhood@redlands.nsw.edu.au as we have students on a wait list who would like to be considered if any vacancies arise. Thank you.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

The Junior Campus will be holding a Mother’s Day Celebration on Friday 10 May, beginning at 7.45am. This year our mothers will be spoiled with breakfast treats followed by an exciting morning of activities in the Kindergarten, Yr 1 and 2 classrooms. We look forward to sharing this special day with you.

Changes to Policies and Procedures

Due to recent changes in the National Quality Standards and Education and Care Services National Regulations, we have recently updated and amended all of the Redlands House Policies and Procedures. Although we foresee that these amendments will not have an impact on families, we invite you to review and freely comment on the Policy Manual. A copy of the Redlands House Policies and Procedures Manual is available at the parent information area in the Redlands House hallway, outside Blue Class. Please let Mrs Huon know if you have any queries or concerns. Your feedback is valued and welcomed.

Quality Improvement Plan (QIP)

The ACECQA National Regulations require approved services to have a Quality Improvement Plan (QIP). The aim of a QIP is to help services self-assess their performance in delivering quality education and care and to plan for future improvements. The QIP also helps the regulatory authorities with their assessment of the service. When Redlands House was assessed three years ago, the Centre was very proud of its Exceeding Rating in all Seven Quality Areas. You will notice our new QIP display area in the hallway above the Orange Class lockers. This area will allow us to recognise our strengths and collaborate with families on ways we can endeavour to improve in each Quality Area. Our relationships with families and communities plays a vital role in our service and program, for this reason we would appreciate and value your feedback. We look forward to your thoughts, comments and suggestions.

Mother’s Day Celebration

Redlands House will be holding a Mother’s Day Celebration on Friday 10 May, beginning at 9.30am with classroom activities, followed by a shared morning tea outside in the playground. You are invited to bring some morning tea to share with your child, along with a picnic rug or chair for your comfort. We look forward to welcoming you as we celebrate this special day.

Head of Secondary Sport

This weekend is the first weekend of ISA winter sport. We will have over 650 students competing in over 65 teams across 6 different sports. A lot goes into the preparation of a Sports season to ensure all of our students can have the best learning experience possible. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful work that all of our Sports staff at Redlands do to get our programs underway and ready for the students: Ms Kate Seebohm, Mr Jack Gooding, Mr Cameron Ellis, Mr James Petering, Ms Eliza Peirce, Mr Gerry Gomez and Ms Annie Stalley. We are very lucky to have dedicated and passionate staff who are backed up by excellent coaches within all sports.

I look forward to seeing our students compete on the weekend and I wish them all the best for the season ahead.

Notice of Macquarie University Sports Field Parking Changes

In October last year, Macquarie University moved to a digital parking platform across the campus and at the same time, introduced paid parking for all Sport and Aquatic Centre users. As part of this change, paid parking will also be applied to the Sport Fields as the last stage in this strategy.

As of 1 May, all parking at the sport fields will attract a fee of $1.50 per hour.

Athletics

This Friday we start our sprints training down at Balmoral Oval with Mosman Athletics Club. All those interested should speak with Mr Ellis in the Sports Department. It will run from 3.30pm (bus departing Redlands) until 5.30pm (bus returning to Redlands).

Cross Country

Cross Country training starts this Friday, with information found on Redlands Pulse – Cross Country. We are looking forward to a great upcoming season. The bus will depart the Adams Centre at 3.30pm and return approximately 5.30pm (training will finish around 5.00pm).

Fitness Centre

Please be aware that the Redlands Fitness Centre is available to all students currently in a Representative Sport and there are sessions across all mornings Monday-Friday with additional afternoon sessions on both Monday and Friday. Please note that from next week the Fitness Centre will be open from 6.15am with the session starting immediately at 6.30am.

I would recommend that all students looking ahead to their Winter Representative Sport use these sessions as a way to prepare physically for their 2019 seasons. Sports such as Football, Rugby and Netball all require a level of strength and flexibility all of which can be achieved by using the Redlands Fitness Centre.

There will also be more information sent out regarding High Performance Program for some of our athletes across the Representative Sports at Redlands as we begin to prepare for the Winter Sport season. This program is designed to track certain athletes through their off-season/in-season, managing their goals and targets for their chosen sports. This program is a more individualised program and offers the students a more tailored approach to their conditioning and strength development. Please speak to Mr Gooding directly or email regarding individualised programs and or the High Performance Program.

Football

Over the Term 1 school holidays we had 22 of our boys and girls Football players travel to Berry for the annual Berry Winter Sports Camp. Once again, the Camp was a great success. The players spent four days fine tuning their Football skills and working on strategy in preparation for the upcoming season. It was a great experience for our players to develop team chemistry both on and off the field and we hope to see the hard work pay off in the first round of the season this weekend. A big thank you to all players who took time out of their holidays to attend the Camp, we hope you enjoyed the experience and will see many of you back again next year.

Best of luck to all teams this Saturday 4 May in Round 1. Players are reminded to arrive 45 minutes prior to the start time for their game in order to allow for sufficient time to warm up. Please check the Redlands Rhino (available on Redlands Pulse) for any changes to the weekly fixture.

Netball

NSNA is looking ahead to Round 3 this weekend, with a number of teams looking to bounce back after some tough loses last term.

ISA Netball starts this weekend with Redlands Rhino having all fixtures, best of luck to all netballers this weekend!

Rowing

During the holidays, both Maddi Howard (Yr 11) and Elizabeth Holtheuer (Yr 9) were selected to represent NSW in the Pathways Rowing program. Maddi was part of the NSW City/Country crew while Elizabeth was part of the NSW Under 17 team who raced against eights from Victoria, Qld, Tasmania, ACT, South Australia and Western Australia, all competing as part of the underage Australian Selection Trials held at Penrith.

This was a great opportunity for both of the girls who were able to train and race with some of the best school rowers from NSW who they would normally be competing against. The experience will have great benefit for their school season when they re-join the Redlands crew in Term 3.

Rugby

Over the Easter Holidays our Opens Rugby program, along with two selected Under 16s players, traveled to Berry Sport and Recreation for the 2nd Winter Preseason Camp. Staying together as a group, having focused multiple two hour block sessions across each day allowed us to upskill as a group, working on the fundamental structures that are Redlands Rugby. Our players took to these sessions, working extremely hard across all four days with some sessions being incredibly tough and taking their toll through the Camp.

Now into Term 2 and we can now look ahead our opening Round 1 clash against St Andrews Cathedral School, a team we will face twice this season. Seeing our Juniors and Inters training so hard on Tuesday looks to make this weekend incredibly promising, with all of groups looking cohesive and with a nice level of aggression in all contact areas.

I am pleased to announce one of our strongest 1st XVs of all time. This team will run out against SACS this weekend looking to go one more step further than 2018.

I would love to see as many students and parents stay and watch our opening match this weekend, the atmosphere we built last year was the highlight for many of our 1st XV players and this is something to be built further on.

Sailing

During the school holidays two teams from the Redlands Sailing program competed at the NSW Schools Teams Racing Championship 2019 at Georges River Sailing Club on Botany Bay. Competing against 19 other teams, the Redlands sailors demonstrated their skill and speed on the water beating several of the top teams. Redlands Blue, led by Zac Braden, had a stellar first regatta placing 10th overall and narrowly missed out on quarter finals due to a countback after tying with both Cranbrook and Riverview. Redlands Gold, led by Ben Harrington, also had a good regatta placing 19th overall with seven wins. As the first Teams Racing event that these sailors have competed at, the results emphasise how much they have all improved over the last season.

Congratulations to Ella Delaney who competed in NSW Secondary Schools Sailing Championships over the holidays. Ella and her partner came away from the competition with the very converted NSW Secondary Schools CHS Championship Sportsmanship award. An outstanding achievement for Ella at such a high level competition.

Snowsports

Congratulations to George Murphy (Yr 10) for being selected to participate in the Australian Mogul Skiing Academy – Whistler Spring Camp in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, officially sanctioned training camp by Ski and Snowboard Australia.

Please note the Friends of Snowsports Ice Breaker is taking place this Friday at 6pm at Cammeray Golf Club. All Snowsports parents are welcome

The Redlands Snowsports second hand clothing and equipment sale will also be held in Liggins Quad this Sunday 5 May.  A great chance to pick up some great deals on equipment for the upcoming snow season.

Junior Sport

New Sports Staff

Mrs Sarah Ellis joins the Junior School Sports team replacing Mrs Gemma Michael, who is on maternity leave. Gemma had her daughter Arla in the holidays. Mrs Ellis is a sports lover with a strong background in Sports Administration in schools. She has settled into the Sports Office this week and will be out and about at Netball this week familiarising herself with all the processes and procedures around our Sports programs.

IPSHA Football (Soccer)

IPSHA Football matches kick off this weekend and we have a very exciting round with Yr 3, 4 and 5 teams all christening the new Redlands Oval with home matches. The draw for all Football has now been emailed and is available on Redlands Pulse. Initial team gradings have been posted on Dunnet Hall noticeboard and emailed to all registered players.

Team selections are based on what our coaches have observed during training and trials over the final weeks of last term during Wednesday Sport time. Teams are graded based on skill and approach to play. We acknowledge that the trial process can be tricky for some players and there may be players disappointed with their grading. The best course of action for those players is to show their best skills, game play and sportsmanship. Our coaches are willing and open to movement if players are performing well.

Our Yrs 5 and 6 teams are both fairly tight on playing numbers, partly a deliberate strategy to increase meaningful playing time and partly forced by the number of players we have. It’s really important to us that we don’t have players standing on the sidelines waiting for game time and I’d rather see players supporting teammates by turning up early and having an extra game before their scheduled match or sticking around to play a later match. Coaches will be asking for players to help – if you’re available it’ll be guaranteed extra playing time.

Rugby Sevens

Our playing numbers have again determined our style of play this season and Sevens Rugby at Koola Park will be the best set up for our Rugby boys. Rugby Sevens has a rolling draw, which matches teams against similar performing teams each week. The draw has been emailed to parents and shows the scheduled time slot, but not exact match times. Those exact times will be emailed to parents each Thursday.

Rugby skills training will be on the Junior Campus oval starting this Friday from 7.15am.

IPSHA Hockey

Our Hockey girls begin their season this Saturday. Draws and team details have been sent to all registered players. Their training session yesterday looked amazing led by Redlander Nick Johnson. The girls are really firing and looking good for a promising season.

AFL

Our AFL Boys take on Barker this weekend on the Barker main oval in a curtain raiser to Barker’s AFL showcase day, which will be super exciting and a great environment to play in. The draw for the AFL season is available on Redlands Pulse and has been emailed to players. Players are reminded to come into the PE office and collect their loan playing kit, or to register their playing number for the team sheet. AFL training will be on the Junior Campus oval starting this Friday from 7.15am and is open to all interested in AFL Football.

Netball

Miss Ellis will be taking over from Ms Gemma Michael and distributing all the information regarding Netball. Our teams and coaches are locked in and continuing on from Term 1 matches and we’ll be looking to make as few changes as possible!

Term 2 Wednesday morning training has taken on a new look with the addition of Leonie Stewart as a coach and coaching mentor. Leonie is a vastly experienced coach who has coached at state and national level. Her expertise will help our girls and coaches really nail down the fundamental skills to help set them up for long ongoing Netball careers. Leonie is keen to pack as much time into the sessions and possible and she, and the coaches, will be starting their Wednesday session at 7.00am in Dunnet Hall NOT 7.15am. Please arrive at 7.00am to make the most of this wonderful opportunity to work with an iconic Netball coach.

Cross Country

The Junior School Cross Country Carnival will be held on Thursday 9 May at Cammeray Golf Club. The format for the Carnival has changed from recent years and students will attend school as normal for classes in the morning – then be bussed to the Carnival at midday. Students should wear PE uniform to school. The order of events is as follows.

Winter Music Festivals

As we approach the Winter Music Festival season, the Music Ensembles program on both the Junior and Senior Campuses, will continue exploring and extending their musical skills in preparation for a variety of concerts throughout June-August. Staff and students are already well underway in preparing a wide range of repertoire in readiness for the Junior Music Festival (August), Senior Music Festival (June) and the HICES Music Festival (August). The department would like to welcome the school community to be part of these festive concerts. See below for dates.

HICES Music Festival Auditions

Due to the closing date for student applications for the 2019 HICES Music Festival extended to Sunday 28 April, the Redlands auditions have moved to Week 2 (Monday 6 -Friday 10 May). Music administration will be in contact to advise students of specific audition times.

Music Staffing Announcements

The Music Department welcomes Ms Julia Booth (K-6 Music teacher), Mr William Tu (Low Strings Specialist) and Mrs Danielle Vita (K-6 Music teacher) to our team of Music educators.

Ms Julia Booth

While Mrs Sue Anderson is on Long Service Leave (Term 2), we welcome Music Teacher Ms Julia Booth to our team for this time. As passionate educator and practitioner of Voice and Piano, Ms Booth has taught at The Sydney Montessori School incorporating Dalcroze, Kodály and Orff-Schulwerk methodologies into her teaching. During her training, she has been highly involved with Gondwanna Voices and looks forward to integrating all her skills and experience into the Music classroom at Redlands.

Mr William Tu

Low Strings Specialist Mr William Tu takes over the instrumental studio of Ms Mary Rapp teaching across the Junior and Secondary Academic and Extra Subjects programs. With extensive experience as a performer and instrumental teacher both locally and overseas, Mr Tu will be an excellent mentor for our young cellists and double bassists on the Junior Campus. His role will also see him work alongside Yr 12 students preparing for the Higher School Certificate.

Mrs Danielle Vita

Teaching on the Junior Campus, Mrs Danielle Vita is an experienced Music educator, Choral Conductor and Strings Specialist, who takes over Mr Michael Warby’s classes. Her teaching practice incorporates Off-Schulwerk and Dalcroze methodologies as foundations for developing exceptional Music curriculum for Primary School students. Danielle has taught at Public School 97 in New York City, along with the International Montessori School and the Tsung Tsin Primary School in Hong Kong.

Senior Music Festival

Back to the 80’s: Friday 14 June, 6.30pm at The Concourse Concert Hall

Redlands has the pleasure in announcing the annual Senior Music Festival Back to the 80’s, a concert showcasing the talents of selected soloists, instrumental and choral ensembles on the Senior Campus. As a thematic feature of the 2019 Senior Music Festival, students have been exploring a diverse range of music from the 1980’s alongside other ensemble repertoire. Music in this decade was all about image and, with the arrival of MTV, the images that accompanied artists became more important than ever. When it came to music during this decade, nothing was understated, not the sound, not the fashion, not even the hairstyles. As a traditional conclusion to the Festival, all students in the Music program will perform as part of the Yr 12 Finale in presenting the well-loved song Footloose through song, movement and dance.

Tickets on sale from Friday 3 May through www.theconcourse.com.au

  • Gold $50
  • Adult $40
  • Junior/Pension/Student/Unemployed $30
  • Family (2 adults, 2 children) $110

Senior Campus

Anzac Day Celebrations

The Music Department would like to acknowledge the musical contributions of the Advanced Concert Band and Advanced Choir musicians at the Secondary School ANZAC Day Service on Tuesday 30 April in Dunnet Hall. In honouring the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, Redlands remembered all soldiers who served our countries, through reflection and commemoration of those ‘who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations’ and ‘the contribution and suffering of all those who have served’.

These musicians led the official music (National Anthem and the School Hymn), while the Advanced Concert Band presented selections from Movement I of Holst’s Second Suite in F, conducted by Mr Mathew Owen. Thanks, is also extended to Mr Nathan Milliner who played the Last Post on the trumpet as part of the reflections.

The Second Suite in F for Military Band, was composed by British composer and teacher Gustav Holst. Born into a musical family, he played piano and violin, and began composing when he was about 12. After studying composition at London’s Royal College of Music, he spent the early part of his career playing trombone in an opera orchestra. At the same time, he held teaching positions at both St Paul’s Girls’ School and Morley College. Holst’s music was influenced by his interest in folk music and the music of many other cultures. Holst is perhaps best-known for composing The Planets, a massive orchestral suite that depicts the astrological character of each known planet.

Audition forms and Information Packs are available from Senior Music Reception.

Redlands Composition Competition

The Music Department is pleased to announce the 2019 Music Composition Competition. Junior Campus

The exception to these times are Junior Voices, Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Band which all commence promptly at 7.30am.
