Year 11

Thank You

Since working with our boys and girls since Yr 7, I have always been impressed with every parent coordinator’s effort and dedication to serve as the magnet between the school, the parents and our community. This year, the parents, staff and students of Redlands would like to say thank you to Michelle Tea, Neen Weir and Sonja Price and for their contribution to the Redlands community in representing the parents of Yr 11 in 2018. In addition, I would also like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to many parent volunteers, who have worked as back stage heroes for numerous activities throughout this year, from making props and costumes for Performing Arts events to setting up the bakery stand in the Spring Fair; from being exam scribers to contributing the World Teacher’s Day morning tea. Your generosity of offering time and support are always appreciated by the staff and students.

If anyone would like to assist or be a member of the Secondary School Parent Contact group in 2019, please email  carys.stuart@bigpond.com.

Cambodia Service Trip

Congratulations to the Yr 11 Cambodia team for fundraising a total of $40,236.26. This is a massive achievement and each member should be very proud for raising $750.00 each through their various fundraising activities such as the Battle of the Bands fundraiser, Bake Sales, Fun Runs and Basketball tournaments. $15,000 will go towards the Community Service Project which will involve our Yr 11 students assisting with the construction of a patient’s room along with the purchase of medical equipment at a community hospital in Kampong Kleang. The remaining $25,263.26 will go towards M’Lop Tapang which is an organisation established by a Redlander. M’Lop Tapang strives to provide a safe haven for vulnerable children of Sihanoukville, offering care and support to any child at risk. We offer access to education, reintegration with families, life-skills training and creative and recreational activities, while ensuring protection from all forms of abuse. Their efforts allow underprivileged children to embrace their childhood so they can become responsible adults as well as positive, independent members of society.

The Cambodia team will embark on their Service Trip to Cambodia on Saturday 8 December for ten days. We wish them the best of luck.

Safe Parking Seminar

On Wednesday, the pouring rain did not dampen the cohort’s enthusiasm in attending the Safe Parking Seminar in the Senior Campus Library. Three Parking Officers from North Sydney Council, Andrew Philips, Kat Chee and Rebecca Putland, provided an informative and detailed presentation on parking, including explaining council regulations, illustrating penalties for P platers and clarifying misconceptions of some assumed practices, such as stopping on or across a driveway (even your own).  Hope this session can be a big money saver for our students.

Summer Holiday

We are marching towards the end of this year, summer is on its way and the Christmas holidays stretch out welcomingly in front of us. We hope our boys and girls will enjoy this time to kick back, relax and unwind after finishing their first set of Yr 12 assessments or IAs this term. The summer holidays can also offer the perfect time to get ahead and to prepare for their progress through to Yr 12, just like doing pre-training sessions for a big marathon. There is no need to run out of steam in the first 200 metres, but it is good timing to get the basics in place. To establish the habit of snack study (eg. Pomodoro Time Technique), to get familiar with the syllabus and assessment schedules for each subject, to develop good eating and sleeping patterns, to find some places where one enjoys studying, to form a study group with friends who share the same subjects. Hopefully, by the time the marathon starts, their minds will be sharp and ready with motivation and focus.
