Issue 37 2018 - 29 Nov 2018

From the Principal

With this being the final Note Day for 2019 I will update parents on some important news regarding vacation works during the summer break.

Storm Repairs

With the local area mentioned as having been one of the worst hit areas in the storm and torrential rain that fell early yesterday morning, we had a very busy day managing to keep the School open and achieved that goal through a combined staff effort. A number of buildings on both campuses suffered water incursions of some kind, due to a variety of reasons. Four buildings on the Senior Campus and three on the Junior Campus had to be addressed during the day; some of the water incursions were relatively easy to fix quickly and today all is well on the Junior Campus, largely thanks to our Facilities staff, and the annual Junior Campus Carol Service was able to proceed this afternoon in Dunnet Hall.

More serious water problems were experienced in two of the Senior Campus buildings. The Fitness Centre is likely to be out of action for the remainder of the term and the same will be the case for the Music classrooms, although the practice rooms and lockers and corridor were not affected. The water ingress into the John Roberts Centre was not a repeat of the issues earlier this year; but was the result of a huge amount of water which came down Monford Place and across the building site, and entered the southern side of the building. Very sadly it seems likely that the timber floors of the auditorium and the two Music classrooms will again have to be replaced. Our insurance will cover this and the floors will be replaced before the start of Term 1 next year. The hydraulics consultants will provide a solution before the new floors are laid to avoid any recurrence until the whole area is covered with the landscaping above the car park.

New Learning Hub Development

On Monday this week the Board’s Property Committee received a progress report on the engagement of a new Head Contractor. The Board is expecting to be in a position to award a contract before Christmas and the School’s target is to have a new Head Contractor commence a validation period in early January. This validation work will lead to a revised construction schedule. The Board’s new target is to have the New Learning Hub ready for operation in Term 1 2020, with landscaping, car parking and access road to follow, to complete Stage 1 of the Senior Campus redevelopment. Completion of the New Learning Hub is the key priority of the Board and Executive.

There will be no work on site by a new builder during the coming summer vacation, but we have retained the crane and work sheds on site until work is ready to commence. This will save both time and money, as it is already confirmed that the crane will be used in its present position.

The School is working with its Project Managers to identify associated works that can be progressed in the interim until the new builder is ready to start work.

Junior Campus Air Conditioning

In the first months of this year the Property Committee commissioned a report on the best means to extend air conditioning on both Campuses. With the New Learning Hub to be climate controlled, the decision was taken to commence with addressing the recommendations for the Junior Campus. Those works commenced earlier this month. No disruption has been caused during the school days as the contractor has been working outside of school hours. We are also expecting to have the remaining classrooms currently without air conditioning in the Cornish Building and the classrooms in Redlands House ready with climate control functionality from the start of 2019.

Ballet and Dance Concert

I very much enjoyed the annual Ballet and Dance concert last week, which surpassed even last year’s Dance spectacular. In the beautiful performance of The Nutcracker ballet in the first half of the concert, the lyrical movements of the Contemporary and the high energy of the Jazz and Tap sections after the interval, it was such a delight to see our dancers’ impressive technique and the joy on their faces as they showcased their skills in front of a very appreciative audience.

Congratulations to all students on such a fine performance and thank you to Ms Karen Martin, Head of Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy, all of the Dance teachers and the many parents involved in staging this year’s Concert.

Australian Science Olympiad Success

I wish to congratulate Yr 11 students Isabel Binnekamp and Lachlan van der Pluijm who were both awarded a High Distinction in this year’s Australian Science Olympiad competitions, Isabel in Biology and Lachlan in Earth and Environmental Science. They have both been invited to attend the Science Olympiad Summer School and have the potential to be selected to represent Australia at the International Science Olympiad competitions next year. Well done to Isabel and Lachlan.

I take this opportunity to wish all families a very Happy Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Head of Secondary School

Happy Holidays

As this is the last Note Day of the year, I would just like to express my gratitude and appreciation to you, the parent community, for all of your efforts and support this year. There have been many successes and challenges over the past 12 months, and through it all the partnership between school and home continues to grow stronger as we remain committed to best nurturing the young people under our care. I wish departing families all the best on the next stage of their schooling journeys and look forward to welcoming new families to Redlands next year. I also look forward to seeing you at our Speech Night on Wednesday 5 December (further details below) and wish you a safe, relaxing, joyous and family-filled holiday season.

Australian Business Week

It has been wonderful to see our Yr 10 students engaged in their Australian Business Week activities this week. Students have been working in groups developing their projects and proposals for presentations tomorrow, and during this time they have been mentored by our parent volunteers. Parents and speakers have also presented to students over the course of the week to further develop their knowledge and skills. We have been so fortunate to have this expertise, support and guidance for our students and truly appreciate the efforts of our parent mentors. I would like to also extend a special thank you to Mr Warrell and other members of the HSIE Department for providing this excellent learning opportunity for our students.

When opening Australian Business Week to the students, teachers and parent mentors on Monday, I noted how this type of learning experience is another fitting example of how we are developing a culture of thinking here at Redlands and how student learning is not just about preparing students for the short term but about helping them become “life-ready”. I mentioned how the business, industry and tertiary education sectors often talk about how we need to develop those “21st Century” dispositions and skills in students such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, collaboration, innovation, communication and agility, to name a few. I am proud to say that I have seen all of these attributes being developed in our Yr 10 students this week and look forward to seeing their final presentations tomorrow.

Speech Night 2018

Wednesday 5 December is a pupil free day at the Secondary School; however, Speech Night is compulsory for all students in Yrs 7-11 that evening. All students are to arrive to the Big Top at Luna Park by 5.15pm. Further details of specific student arrival times for rehearsals will be sent separately. I look forward to seeing you there.

Tutor Meetings 2019

After positive feedback from the Tutor meetings we instituted to commence this year, we will be having these meetings again in 2019. Please note that the first day of school for returning students is Tuesday 29 January and all students are expected to come to school to have a meeting with their Tutor on that day. We would like parents to attend this meeting, as well, so that they can collaboratively reflect on the previous year, as well as develop goals and strategies for the year ahead. (However, if parents are unable to attend this meeting because of other commitments, we would still like the students to attend these meetings on their own.) These Tutor meetings are the only requirement for students on this day and students can return home at the conclusion of this meeting. More information about these Tutor meetings and sign up information for the day will be sent home in the next week.

2019 Schedule Change

In 2019 there will be a change to the weekly schedule in the Secondary School. Thursdays will have a similar schedule to the other days of the week up until the end of Period 5. This change will result in the addition of a Tutor period on Thursdays from 10.30-11.05am and a regular 40 minute lunch period for students. Period 5 will finish at 2.25pm to allow students to travel to their Thursday Sports training. This change will allow for more Pastoral time for students during the week where we can focus on further developing our Wellbeing program and provide greater support for our students.

Blazers

The Uniform Shop will be open on Thursday 6 December 2018 from 9.00am to 3.00pm to take blazers for embroidery for Pockets and Half Colours. Please ensure that all pockets are emptied, all badges removed and clearly labelled with student name. All blazers dropped in will require the relevant certificate of the award. Students will require blazers for Speech Night on Wednesday 5 December 2018. Blazers can be collected from the Uniform Shop from Monday, 23 January 2019.

Attention Parents of Students at Risk of Anaphylaxis

Redlands is committed to supporting our students at risk of anaphylaxis. Our ability to do so, however, requires all respective parents to ensure that Redlands is provided with the necessary and specific information required for carrying out your child’s individual emergency procedures in the event of an occurrence. This information is specified in each student’s Individual Action Plan.

On Tuesday 4 December, Secondary School students at risk of anaphylaxis will have their individual kits returned to them for the upcoming summer holiday period. In order to help us to assist you in the management of your child’s health for the academic year 2019, we ask that you ensure that your child returns their kit to the Health Centre Nurse, in a clearly labelled container, with a valid EpiPen, current Anaphylaxis Action Plan and any other required medication, on the first day of Term 1, 2019.

Staffing Updates

There are a few Secondary School teachers who will be leaving us at the end of this year as they complete leave positions or retire and we will farewell them at our end of term assemblies and/or Prize Giving Ceremony.

As previously mentioned in Note Day, we would like to acknowledge and wish a warm farewell to Dean of Administration, Mrs Wendy Hollings, and Maths teacher, Mrs Barbara Potter, on their respective retirements after many years of service both here at Redlands, and elsewhere.

In addition, we would like to thank the following teachers who will be leaving us at the end of year for their efforts as leave replacement teachers: Ms Lorna Woolley (Science), Ms Alyssha Clark (Drama), Ms Mai Takamura (Japanese) and Dr Astrid Seele (Latin).

Furthermore, after 13 years of juggling the responsibilities of Dance Subject Coordinator and leading the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy, Mrs Karen Martin will be stepping down from her role as Subject Coordinator of Dance in the Secondary School at the end of 2018. However, she will be continuing in her employment at Redlands moving forward as Head of the Ballet Dance and Academy, leading the Academy and the associated Extra Curricular, Cocurricular and Extra Subject Dance programs at Redlands.

Accordingly, Ms Katharine Boase will be stepping into the role as Secondary School Subject Coordinator of Dance from the beginning of next year, in addition to her Assistant Year Advisor role with Yr 7.

Also, with Wendy Hollings’ retirement at the end of this year, Mr Ben Castelli will move into the role of Acting Dean of Academic Administration in 2019. Accordingly, we are pleased to announce that Ms Alissa Ynson will be the Acting Yr 7 Year Advisor for 2019. Ms Ynson has had Pastoral leadership roles at previous schools and has been a valued Tutor in our Pastoral Care system, just finishing 2018 as a Yr 7 Tutor.

With Ms Abigail Walker commencing her maternity leave early next year, Mr Michael Warrell will be acting Yr 8 Year Advisor in 2019. Furthermore, with Ms Lisa Vale taking a year’s leave in 2019, Ms Rebecca Mountain will move into the role as Yr 9 Year Advisor and Mr Tony Dong will move into the role as Yr 9 Acting Year Advisor. And finally, with Ms Emma Bergin stepping down as Year Advisor next year, Mr Eddy Atkins will move into the role as Yr 11 Year Advisor and Ms Rachel Wilson will move into the role as Yr 11 Assistant Year Advisor.

I would like to once again acknowledge the efforts of our amazing teaching and support staff in the Secondary School and give special thanks to all departing staff members for their many contributions to Redlands.

Service

Last opportunity to Give to our Donations Drive

Sadly our donations boxes are not brimming over with donations as yet. It has been a short term and the end of term has come around very quickly but please see if you can pick up something to add to either the Toys and Tucker donations for Anglicare or socks, underwear or toiletries for Matthew Talbot.

Textbook Donations

At this time of the year we are often surprised by the very many textbooks that are disposed of in our skip bins as students clean out lockers for the end of the year. This year, if there are no younger siblings, we would like to ask students to consider donating clean textbooks, in good condition and we will pass them onto schools or students that need them.

What a Year it Has Been!

As we come to the end of a very busy year at Redlands, I thought it would be a good idea have a look back over all of the wonderful Service activities that have taken place within and around our school community.

Over the course of the year, we have been active in the outdoors participating in Clean Up Australia Day, the Mother’s Day Classic, the Pink Sports round in support of the McGrath Foundation, and recently, Yr 9 boys completing the Spring Trek for Room to Read.

Many students have generously given their time to wide range of activities including weekly visits to the residents at Bougainvillea, The Smith Family Student2Student reading program, the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal as well as our weekly commitment to breakfast service at the Matthew Talbot Hostel. Within the school, students have supported Junior School Reading and Maths clubs. Hopefully these rewarding experiences have given our students an opportunity to give back to others in a meaningful way and reflect on their good fortune.

We have also made very valued contributions through donations drives for Matthew Talbot (socks, underwear and toiletries) and  Anglicare (Toys and Tucker). Not forgetting the many bake sales, pizza sales and sausage sizzles as fundraisers for causes such as farmers in NSW impacted by the drought, the Tanzania Service project, the Cambodian Service trip to non-profit M’Lop Tapang and a range of other smaller, but no less valued, initiatives.

Significantly, students have thoughtfully participated in a wide range of learning, thinking and reflection activities as part of our Pastoral program. These have examined the meaning and value of Service in Yr 7, culminating this term with a visit from Assistance Dogs Australia, and the positive and negative impact we have on our environment in Yr 8. Students visited the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) to make connections between their learning in Geography, Science and Service. We have examined inequality in Yr 9, and in Yr 10 we have built a deeper understanding of disadvantage and the issues of homelessness with our second Redlands School Sleepout attended by over 100 students and a hardy bunch of teachers. And finally, Yrs 11 and 12 students have worked passionately and independently on a wide range of Service initiatives of their own choosing which hopefully will stay with them as they come to the end of their schooling.

Lastly, we have sent some very fine groups of students on wonderful, exciting and thought provoking expeditions with Service and cultural exchange as a key element. This year, students have travelled to Fiji, Arnhem Land and Tanzania and learnt about the places and the people as well as making a contribution to the communities they have visited. Next week we are also wishing our next group of students travelling to Cambodia all the best for a safe and meaningful journey.

Thank you very much to all of the teachers who have made these activities possible. It is very rewarding to reflect of the very many ways Redlands teachers, students and their families contribute to our own community and also on a much wider basis. A final thank you to our outgoing Service Captains, Nono Nakamura and Hugh Smylie, for their engagement throughout their time in these roles.

Best wishes for the upcoming holidays and I’m looking forward to another busy year ahead working alongside by our Service Captains, Isabel Binnekamp and Lachlan van der Pluijm.

Year 11

Thank You

Since working with our boys and girls since Yr 7, I have always been impressed with every parent coordinator’s effort and dedication to serve as the magnet between the school, the parents and our community. This year, the parents, staff and students of Redlands would like to say thank you to Michelle Tea, Neen Weir and Sonja Price and for their contribution to the Redlands community in representing the parents of Yr 11 in 2018. In addition, I would also like to extend our appreciation and gratitude to many parent volunteers, who have worked as back stage heroes for numerous activities throughout this year, from making props and costumes for Performing Arts events to setting up the bakery stand in the Spring Fair; from being exam scribers to contributing the World Teacher’s Day morning tea. Your generosity of offering time and support are always appreciated by the staff and students.

If anyone would like to assist or be a member of the Secondary School Parent Contact group in 2019, please email  carys.stuart@bigpond.com.

Cambodia Service Trip

Congratulations to the Yr 11 Cambodia team for fundraising a total of $40,236.26. This is a massive achievement and each member should be very proud for raising $750.00 each through their various fundraising activities such as the Battle of the Bands fundraiser, Bake Sales, Fun Runs and Basketball tournaments. $15,000 will go towards the Community Service Project which will involve our Yr 11 students assisting with the construction of a patient’s room along with the purchase of medical equipment at a community hospital in Kampong Kleang. The remaining $25,263.26 will go towards M’Lop Tapang which is an organisation established by a Redlander. M’Lop Tapang strives to provide a safe haven for vulnerable children of Sihanoukville, offering care and support to any child at risk. We offer access to education, reintegration with families, life-skills training and creative and recreational activities, while ensuring protection from all forms of abuse. Their efforts allow underprivileged children to embrace their childhood so they can become responsible adults as well as positive, independent members of society.

The Cambodia team will embark on their Service Trip to Cambodia on Saturday 8 December for ten days. We wish them the best of luck.

Safe Parking Seminar

On Wednesday, the pouring rain did not dampen the cohort’s enthusiasm in attending the Safe Parking Seminar in the Senior Campus Library. Three Parking Officers from North Sydney Council, Andrew Philips, Kat Chee and Rebecca Putland, provided an informative and detailed presentation on parking, including explaining council regulations, illustrating penalties for P platers and clarifying misconceptions of some assumed practices, such as stopping on or across a driveway (even your own).  Hope this session can be a big money saver for our students.

Summer Holiday

We are marching towards the end of this year, summer is on its way and the Christmas holidays stretch out welcomingly in front of us. We hope our boys and girls will enjoy this time to kick back, relax and unwind after finishing their first set of Yr 12 assessments or IAs this term. The summer holidays can also offer the perfect time to get ahead and to prepare for their progress through to Yr 12, just like doing pre-training sessions for a big marathon. There is no need to run out of steam in the first 200 metres, but it is good timing to get the basics in place. To establish the habit of snack study (eg. Pomodoro Time Technique), to get familiar with the syllabus and assessment schedules for each subject, to develop good eating and sleeping patterns, to find some places where one enjoys studying, to form a study group with friends who share the same subjects. Hopefully, by the time the marathon starts, their minds will be sharp and ready with motivation and focus.

Yr 10 Reports

Yr 10 will be receiving their academic reports via Redlands Pulse shortly. Please take this opportunity to discuss both your child’s academic results as well as their Approach to Learning grades. Redlands’ focus on Approach to Learning is intended to shift our students’ thinking towards a growth mindset. Acknowledging and encouraging the process of learning over results per se improves students’ self-esteem, motivation and learning orientation which ultimately lays strong foundations for improved academic performance.

Departures

I would like to farewell the students and their families who are departing Redlands at the end of this term. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours: Emma Baker, Tom Cartwright, Jackson Low, Griffin Potter and Tadgh Robinson.

ABW

Thank you to the mentors and staff who made Australian Business Week so successful. This week-long project fosters important enterprise skills such as creativity and innovation, project management, working with others, communication and digital skills. Demand for enterprise skills has been rising over time and jobs of the future are increasingly dependent on these skills. ABW has provided an authentic real-world scenario for our students to develop these skills with the support and guidance of expert mentors.

Year 9

As the year draws to a close, Mr Walker and I would like to wish our Yr 9 students and  families a very happy and relaxing summer holiday. Our Yr 9 students have had a marvellous year of many and varied achievements. It has been a pleasure to read their academic reports and gauge their progress across many disciplines. It is hard to believe that very soon, in the new year, we will be welcoming students back as the new Redlands Yr 10 cohort.

Student Achievements

Congratulations to Tiago Garrido Bulnes for receiving an award from the Embassy of Spain’s Conservation of Education for achieving a Band C1 in his Spanish Adapted Languages exam.

Speech Night

Next Wednesday 5 December, we will join together to recognise students’ achievements at the Redlands Secondary School Speech Night, at the Big Top, Luna Park. Please be reminded that this is a compulsory school event. Please can I ask for your support and request that you reiterate our expectations for behaviour at this important formal event. Students will be reminded next week at our Form Assembly of the importance of this occasion and the School’s expectations for dress on the evening. Students are advised to be attentive, to refrain from chatting and of course, not to use mobile telephones during the event. Thank you for your support to ensure that students behave appropriately so that we can properly celebrate the achievements of our exceptional Yr 9 cohort.

Student Farewells

It is with heavy hearts that we farewell Alexander Ewin, Liberty Jacob, Nicholas Findell-Aghnatios, Joshua Roberts, Emma Rugge-Price and Hannah Van Regteren. We wish these students well as they continue their education in new settings. We hope that they will look back fondly on their time at Redlands and that they will keep in touch.

Sun Safety

Our Yr 9 students attended a Sun Safety presentation this week in Redlands Hall. Ella Banfield and Aysha Swanson from Yr 10 presented information about the importance of skin checks and preventative measures to ensure safe leisure time in the sun.

Debating Announcement from Mrs Simone Bryant

Have you considered participating in Debating?

Redlands competes in the FED and ISDA competitions in Semester 1. Expressions of interest are now open for Yrs 7-10 for the 2019 season. Debating and public speaking helps to develop confidence, respect for others and a sense of timing and structure. Students will also hone their ability to present persuasive arguments and increase their knowledge of current affairs topics. Redlands aims to foster an inclusive culture in our Debating program that supports all students to develop their skills in debating. More about our program is available in the About Debating and the Debating Expectations section of Redlands Pulse. Competitive Debating enables students to qualify for Pockets, Half Colours and Full Colours. More information about these awards are in the Student Planner.

You may also choose to be part of Debating Club for additional coaching and social Debating.

Please register your interest in the trials to be held after school on Friday 1 February  2019 here.

Year 8

Yr 8 Science Symposium

During their Science classes, students have been carrying out their SRP (Student Research Project) and gained first-hand, the work of scientists: curiosity leading to a question, which is then tested, data collected and analysed, and finally conclusions; bringing students closer to an answer.  This is the problem-solving nature of Science.

All the group projects were displayed in Redlands Hall and the best in each class judged by a panel of guest judges: Mr Jon Gray (Assistant Head of Science), Ms Lisa Vale (Yr 8 Coordinator), Mr Peter Ireland (Yr 7 parent representative), Ms Alana Wylie (Eye Heart Science igniting young minds to think Founder), Dr Gabriel Chircu (Maths teacher) and Ms Wendy Duckworth (e-Learning Coordinator).

The judges commented on how impressed they were with the projects, and how passionately students talked about their work. Congratulations to the following winners:

Originality – Tubular Velocity by Aarav Kumar, Izaac Nisbet and Thomas Taylor

Overall winner – Salt plop, Temperature drop by Sophie McMillan, Ella Morris and Elina Filatova

Technology

Over the last semester, Yr 8 have been working on their Drone City Project. 8(Y) Technology put the finishing touches on the Yr 8 Drone City, placing a road network around the city. The final component of the Drone City Project involved each Yr 8 class, placing their designated area’s models which they designed back in Term 2, such as the city centre, parks and recreations, apartment living, airports and schools on the map. This week, students had the exciting task of programming Parrot Mambo Mini Drones to fly from their classes designated area to another area chosen by their teacher using Swift Playgrounds on the Apple iPad’s.

The parents, staff and students of Redlands would like to say thank you to Nancie Gibbs, Pauline (Tiki) Blake, Heidi Field and Fran McGourty for their contribution to the Redlands community in representing the parents of Yr 8 in 2018.

If anyone would like to assist or be a member of the Secondary School Parent Contact Group in 2019 for Yr 9, please email carys.stuart@bigpond.com for further information.

Speech Night

Next Wednesday, we will join together to recognise students’ achievements at the Redlands Secondary School Speech Night, at the Big Top, Luna Park. Please can I ask for your support and request that you reiterate our expectations for behaviour at this important formal event. I have spoken with students and I have reminded them that they must be appropriately presented for the event. Students are advised to be attentive, to refrain from chatting and of course, not use mobile telephones during the event. Thank you for your support to ensure that students behave appropriately so that we can properly celebrate the achievements of our exceptional Yr 8 cohort.

As the year draws to a close, Ms Mountain and I would like to wish our Yr 8 students and their families a very Merry Christmas. Our Yr 8 students have had a wonderful year, and they are to be commended on their many achievements. They should be exceptionally proud of their academic reports and gauge their progress across many disciplines. The year has flown by, and it almost feels surreal that we will be welcoming students back as the new Redlands Yr 9 cohort.

On a personal note, I wish to thank both students and parents for all their support throughout this very eventful year. It has been an absolute privilege to have been both the Assistant and then later in the year, Year Advisor, to one of the most incredible Year Groups at Redlands. As we quickly move into the new year, I wish Ms Rebecca Mountain and Mr Tony Dong the very best as they take on the leadership roles for the cohort. As I take leave and spend this valuable time with my family travelling around Australia, Yr 8 will very much be in my thoughts, and I look forward to hearing of their many successes on my return in 2020.

Merry Christmas and have a safe and wonderful New Year!

Pastoral Care – Student Led Assemblies

Last Friday, Yr 7 held our first student led Year Meeting. Students reflected on examinations and considered personal strategies to assist during times of pressure in order to promote balance. The assembly finished with a light-hearted competition with Tutors in the form of a Dad Joke-Off, led by Paddy Walker, who was very comfortable behind the roaming mic! Thank you to Charlotte Scamps, Lily Hobbs, Nick Jackson, Julia Murphy, Matt Fry and Paddy Walker for their organisation.

We look forward to our final assembly, Love Yourself, this Friday. The assembly will explore how we can find value from the inside out rather than from external sources, value beyond looks and appearances. Thanks to Sabrina Blasco, Lucy Horton, Hannah Mitchell, Sammy Hely, Daniel Close, Layla Carpenter and Tobias Bowgerald for their input and leadership.

Yr 8 Pastoral Team 2019

Ms Abby Walker, our fantastic Assistant Year Advisor, is expecting her first baby. Ms Walker will be heading on maternity leave in early 2019, returning later in the year. We are excited to announce that Mr Michael Warrell (Yr 7 DB Tutor) will be stepping into the role of Acting Assistant Year Advisor whilst, Ms Walker is spending time getting to know her new bubba.

Additionally, we congratulate Ms Alissa Ynson (Yr 7 RR Tutor) and Ms Rachel Wilson (Yr 7 RW Tutor) for their new appointments within the Redlands Senior Pastoral team. Ms Ynson has been appointed the position of Acting Yr 7 Advisor, and Ms Wilson the position of Assistant Yr 11 Advisor for 2019.

All appointments are a wonderful reflection on the strength of the 2018 Yr 7 Pastoral team and it is wonderful to see Ms Ynson, Ms Wilson and Mr Warrell be able to share their skills and experience within the wider Redlands community. Each will work closely with the new Yr 8 Tutors to ensure a smooth and supportive transition for students. We look forward to welcoming new members to our Yr 8 Pastoral team in 2019.

A Final Note

Thank you for a fantastic year. The Yr 7 Pastoral team wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday!

Holidays are wonderful times for students to relax and enjoy their families and friends – after all, they are sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren etc well before they are students. For all students, holidays are also an excellent opportunity to read, exercise more and pursue their hobbies away from electronic devices. Students are encouraged get active outside and enjoy Sydney in summer, and a well-deserved break! We look forward to welcoming you back in the new year and hearing about your holiday adventures.

End of Year Appreciation

The huge rainfall of this week has done little to dampen spirits as the school year draws to a close. In this final Note Day for 2018, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who make Redlands the very special community it is.

Firstly, a thank you to Redlands parents for your ongoing support, both through your words but also through your actions. Thank you for the many and varied ways you have supported Redlands again this year; please know that it makes a difference and is appreciated. I am also immensely proud and privileged to work alongside an exceptional group of leaders, teachers and support staff who work collaboratively, tirelessly and passionately, as we always aim to provide the very best learning experiences and opportunities for students, both in and out of the classroom setting. Lastly, I thank our students for their boundless energy, enthusiasm, care and empathy for each other and their thirst for learning, all qualities which are truly infectious.

I look forward to seeing many parents in these final days of the academic year and I hope that the upcoming holiday break will allow you all to stop from daily routines and enjoy time with family and friends. As I have often said, the quality time we spend disconnecting away from school can be just as important as the time we are here.

Information for the 2019 academic year will be sent in mid-January to families and Term 1 commences on Wednesday 30 January 2019. With sincere appreciation and very best wishes to you and your families for Christmas and the New Year.

Ballet and Dance Performance

Last Thursday, accompanied by my youngest daughter, I joined many other staff and Redlands families in the Redlands community, in being thoroughly entertained by the passion, professionalism and sheer joy of the Ballet and Dance Academy’s annual concert. I still have to remind myself that this is a school production and not a West End performance given the quality of this show, the energy of the children performing and their obvious enjoyment on the stage. Well done to all of the many Junior School students who performed and it was also delightful to see the range of performers from Yr 1 up to Yr 11. My thanks are also extended to the many parents involved in supporting this production, without whom it simply would not have run as smoothly and of course to Mrs Martin and her wonderful team.

2019 Staffing News

As we move into the final week of the academic year, I write to notify parents of some changes in our Junior School staffing for 2019.

I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Mrs Samantha Kourakis as our new Dean of Students P-6. This Campus leadership position will be responsible for the continued development and implementation of the student wellbeing program on the Junior Campus and Mrs Kourakis’ knowledge and understanding of our School made her the stand-out choice from a very strong field of external and internal applicants.

Departures

At the end of the term, we say farewell to a few Junior School staff members and thank them for their contributions to our School community.

  • After 22 years of dedicated service, Mr Bill Baugh is leaving Redlands to explore new opportunities. Bill has helped Numeracy Support students from K-10 over this period of time and his passion for Mathematics and students with additional learning needs has dovetailed perfectly.
  • Mr Jake Turnbull leaves Redlands after six years of teaching in Yr 6. Mr Turnbull is looking forward to a new challenge as he takes up a position at Pymble Ladies College from 2019, a school that will also significantly reduce his commute time. I thank ‘Mr T’ for his commitment to the students and adding value to our staff team over the years.
  • After just over two years teaching at Redlands, Ms Emily Nagel is moving out of Sydney to country NSW to be closer to her partner and we acknowledge her commitment to the students over this time.
  • Mr Josh Aghion has come to the end of his maternity cover contract with us. In a short amount of time, Mr Aghion has made a wonderful contribution to our school community and now moves overseas to take up at position at the Australian International School Hong Kong.
  • Ms Shelly Acland finishes her contract with us as a Junior School Counsellor and we are sincerely grateful for the care and professional guidance she has given so many students, staff and parents.
  • Miss Claire Patterson concludes her time as our gap year student and we thank Claire for the warmth and energy that she has given to the role as she now takes some time to consider travel and study options.
  • Current Yr 3 teacher, Ms Emma Bladen will take up a teaching role in the Prep School in 2019 so remains as part of our Redlands staff team.

I know that you will join me in wishing these staff members all the very in their next positions and I thank them sincerely for their contributions to Redlands during their time here.

Arrivals:

  • With nearly 20 years’ experience, Mr Hugh Brakell joins us from Sydney Grammar where he has been teaching for the last eight years and is currently a Year Coordinator.
  • Ms Lyn Wynne joins us from Lane Cove West Public School where she has been teaching for the last few years and has been a valuable member of their Stage 3 Leadership team.
  • Ms Alexandra Smith is already a familiar face with many students having done a number of casual teaching days this term after returning from the UK where she has worked for the last few years at a leading co-ed, independent K-12 school as Assistant Head of Year and Junior School teacher.
  • Mrs Kate McAliece will be very familiar to many families and students as a previous Prep School teacher and regular casual teacher for our Campus.
  • We are also thrilled to welcome back Ms Kristie Randle who was on maternity leave this year and will resume her Junior School class teacher role again in 2019.

All of these teachers will further add expertise, passion, experience and leadership to our overall Junior School staff team and I know you will join me in welcoming them into our school community next year.

Junior School Speech Day 2018

Please find below a reminder overview of the schedule for our annual Junior School Speech Day, the final event in the Junior School calendar next Wednesday 5 December. Attendance for all students is compulsory and every student will also be performing at least one item on stage.

Eye Dissections

This week, as we have continued to ensure our students are learning right up until the end of the term, our Yr 5 students have enjoyed the opportunity to be part of practical Science lessons on our Senior Campus as part of their Unit of Inquiry topic, Light. Connected to this, each class has explored the structure of the eye and building upon this, the students were able to be guided to dissect bull’s eyes as part of a practical Science lesson. It was wonderful for me to hear the level of thinking and questions that our Yr 5 students displayed and their tangible excitement being in the senior Science labs.

“The eye dissection was fun, and my favourite part was feeling the vitreous humour, because it felt like slime. I also liked cutting the eye in half. I learned a lot, and I loved this experience.” Emily Collins

“It was very interesting to see the liquid come out of the eye after Mrs Harrisson did the first eye incision. It was also very cool seeing how the lens magnified the words on the paper. It was so much fun!” Finn Scott Brown

Junior School Debating

Debating wrapped up for 2018 this week and I extend a big ‘thank you’ to Mrs Sharp and the students for their participation each week throughout the year. Our thanks also go to Masters Academy who have facilitated the weekly Debating sessions, providing over 150 students across Yrs 4-6 with the opportunity to learn new skills. Details about the 2019 Debating, both as a Cocurricular Club and the Representative Debating Teams for Yrs 5 and 6, will be available early in Term 1 next year.

For our Yr 6 students moving into the Secondary School, Redlands competes in the FED and ISDA competitions in Semester 1 and expressions of interest are open for Yrs 7-10 for the 2019 season. Debating and public speaking develops students’ confidence, respect for others and sense of timing and structure, as well as their ability to present a persuasive argument and their knowledge of current affairs topics. Redlands aims to foster an inclusive culture in our Debating program that supports all students to develop their skills in Debating. More about our program is available in the About Debating and the Debating Expectations section of Redlands Pulse. Competitive Debating enables you to qualify for Pockets, Half Colours and Full Colours. More information about these awards is the Student Planner. You may also be part of Debating Club for additional coaching and social Debating.

If you are interested, please register for trials here, which we be held after school on Friday 1 February 2019. For more information, please contact the Debating Coordinator, Mrs Bryant (sbryant@redlands.nsw.edu.au).

End of Representative Sports Season

Last weekend saw the final Junior School Representative Sports matches for 2018. Over the year, we have had 50 separate Junior School Sports teams across all sports, and I am indebted to the tireless work of our Head of Junior School Sport, Mr Carter, and Sports Administrators, Mrs Michael and Ms Dongas, in ensuring that all of the work behind the scenes organising fixtures, coaches, training sessions, venues, referees, and so on has been meticulously carried out. Overall, from my observations watching a range of sports every weekend, I continue to enjoy seeing the skill development of individuals and teams, the sense of team play that is fostered, the strong camaraderie amongst the students and the genuine sense of enjoyment and pride the students have representing Redlands.

Premier’s Reading Challenge Certificates

Congratulations to the many students who have been presented with Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) Certificates in the last fortnight. This week, we heard from the Premier’s Reading Challenge Office who apologised and informed us that the 2018 Gold PRC certificates were delayed in production and are expected to be mailed to schools this Friday.

Please note that Semester 2 student reports will be finalised and uploaded to the parent portal for access towards the latter part of the week commencing, Monday 10 December. An SMS will be sent to families when these reports are accessible.

End of the School Year

As I write the last Note Day for 2018, it is the close of another busy, rewarding and emotionally-charged year in the Preparatory School. I would like to thank the Preparatory School community, the wonderful parent body, for their endless support, without which the staff couldn’t have accomplished so many successes with your children. I wish you all a very joyous and blessed Christmas, a relaxing summer break and I look forward to hearing all about your holidays in the New Year. To assist with your planning for the 2019 holidays, please find below the term dates for next year. Could I please ask that all Early Childhood families plan their vacations within the holiday periods, as this ensures a consistent and undisturbed education for your child(ren). I hope that by providing term dates before the 2019 school year allows sufficient time to plan your holidays:

Term 1 – Wednesday 30 January – Friday 12 April
Term 2 – Tuesday 30 April – Friday 28 June
Term 3 – Tuesday 23 July – Friday 27 September
Term 4 – Monday 14 October – Tuesday 3 December

There Are Short Cuts to Happiness and DANCING is One of Them.

Last Thursday evening I had the privilege to be in the company of some very talented students at the Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy’s annual concert. The Christmas story of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker captivated the audience as Clara and the Nutcracker Prince took a journey through the Land of Snow and the Lemonade Sea, where they met some interesting characters. The exquisite ballerinas who made dancing on pointe shoes look like they were walking on clouds and the young men who so effortlessly pirouetted and leapt in the air, and of course, not forgetting, the tiniest of performers who melted our hearts, made for a magnificent performance. The second half of the evening was comprised of jazz, contemporary and tap, and I was so proud to watch our enthusiastic Yr 1 and 2 students who had the audience clapping and cheering as they danced to old favourites, Locomotion and Uptown Girl. Thank you to the teachers whose choreography, staging and costuming were outstanding, the parent volunteers, whose commitment to dance lessons, costume making and rehearsals is tireless. To the performers who danced so beautifully, thank you for giving the audience a gift that will be forever in their memory, long after the performance.

Throughout the past two weeks, there has also been some delightful Musical Theatre and Drama performances by the Prep students. Thank you to the tutors who work closely with the students all year.

Letting Our Light Shine

The Christmas tree is laden with many gifts for the Anglicare Toys and Tucker Campaign. Thank you for your generosity as the students of Redlands, once again, demonstrate how they “let their light shine” by giving to others in need.

Staff Update

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Sam Kourakis as Dean of Students P-6 in 2019. Mrs Kourakis’ extensive and positive association with Redlands, will enhance our Junior Campus Leadership team as well as our whole staff, and bring a wealth of expertise to this role.

Ms Shelly Acland, who kindly stepped into the Counsellor’s role after Ms Jo Wise’s departure, is leaving Redlands this year. Head of Secondary Sport

With the end of the School year nearing, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff, coaches and students who contribute to Redlands Sport.

Our Redlands Sports staff, Mr Cameron Ellis, Ms Kate Seebohm, Mr Jack Gooding and Mr James Petering, are a dedicated and talented team who continue to develop our programs and all the students within them. A lot goes on behind the scenes to ensure that all details related to the administration and management of Sport is completed and our students get the best learning experience possible. I thank them for their support and continued effort in educating the students of Redlands.

Redlands is very lucky to have excellent coaching staff across all Sports. Led by our Directors of Coaching, Ms Renae Camino, Ms Annie Stalley and Mr Gerry Gomez, it is our coaches at Redlands where the rubber hits road. They are ultimately the people who deliver our Sport programs and develop the immediate connection and rapport with the teams, squads or crews who they are charged with. Many of our coaches balance their commitment as a Sports coach with university timetables, additional employment opportunities or family commitments. They are dedicated individuals who love sport and are deeply aware of the opportunities it provides to young people. Our coaching staff are the life blood of our programs and I thank all of them for their passion and commitment to Redlands Sport.

But, more important than our staff and our coaches, are our students. We are blessed to be able to work with students and families who are caring, compassionate and grateful people. Every day our students continue to surprise us with their talent and drive to improve. It is the moments where students demonstrate the extra commitment to training, the appreciation for their sport, the joy of competition, the humility in victory or the grace in defeat that continues to inspire all that we do. I thank all of our students who have shown commitment and gratitude for the challenge that Sport provides.

Redlands Sport has seen significant changes and developments throughout 2018, and I look forward to sharing further growth of our programs with the Redlands community in 2019.

I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Girls Basketball

Another great weekend for Girls Basketball. Our Junior A team travelled to the Central Coast and found themselves in a close fought game that was sent into overtime. At the end of the overtime period the score was still tied, with the golden point rule coming into play. With Central Coast starting with the possession, our girls had a strong task ahead of them. Despite Redlands playing some great defence, Central Coast managed to score and end the game, winning by two points. Our Junior B team had a massive 56 point win against a travelling Blue Mountains team, and our Junior C Girls came away from St Spyridon with an 11 point victory. Our Inter A and Inter B Girls both had strong wins against Chevalier and St Spyridon respectively. Our Firsts girls played some fantastic basketball, trading point for point with Central Coast for the full 40 minutes. Some great team play in the 4th quarter saw Redlands with the upper hand, winning the game by three points. Our Open B Girls had another great win when they travelled to Oakhill.

Boys Basketball

It was a great atmosphere at NBISC on Saturday, with many of our Boys teams at home against St Pats. We had some great results in three of the Div 1 Boys’ games. Our 13A Boys showed they are a team to be reckoned with, winning against St Pat’s in overtime and securing 2nd place on the ladder at the mid-point of the season. The 14A Boys played some of their best basketball yet this season, to upset a strong St Pat’s team. Our 15A Boys had their first win of the season, a very well-deserved win against a St Pat’s team that didn’t back down until the final siren. Our 17A Boys and Firsts Boys teams both put up a strong fight, but St Pat’s were just too strong in these divisions. Our B Boys teams had a clean sweep against St Patrick’s C teams with convincing wins in almost every age group. A special mention to the 15B Boys team who displayed some great team work and composure in the final minutes of the game. A tough round for the C Boys against some highly skilled Oakhill teams. Well done to the 17C Boys who managed to pull away with a 14-6 win a the final buzzer.

Best of luck to all teams this Saturday. A reminder that there will be no training during the final week of school.

Touch Football

There were only two games for Redlands teams over the weekend with our Junior As and Senior Cs sides both coming up against undefeated teams from St Andrews Cathedral School.

Our Junior Cs continued to show how far they have come as a team with players combining brilliantly in attack against the more experienced opposition. The Juniors were missing a few of their key players, especially in defence, where SACS began to put our Redlands players under enormous pressure. It was so encouraging to see all of the players in the team lift and play to the last whistle in a tough game that they will learn from and develop into stronger players.

Our Senior C side played an amazing back and forth game against SACS with the final score of 1-1 not illustrating enough how much attacking was on display. The Senior Girls, throughout the match, displayed some wonderful attack with Matilda Rose Williams and Emilia Built leading the team around the park with some wonderfully effective running. The team’s defence was also incredible, managing to hold out SACS attack time and time again. This result continues this teams climb up the ladder in their division and, with continued practice in the new school term, we should see this Senior C playing some wonderful Touch Football at Finals time.

Junior Sport

It was a wonderful finale for our sporting year last weekend with our teams in action all over Sydney and surrounds. Thanks to all players, supporters, spectators and coaches for their contribution to a great year of sport.

Our Girls basketballers finished their short season off in style, playing some great basketball and showing tremendous teamwork and most importantly having lots and lots of fun.

Our Yr 5 and 6 basketballers took on Barker and, with many teams playing tightly fought matches, our increasing  depth in the Basketball program shone through.

Our Cricketers travelled to Tudor House and, despite not coming away with a win, the road trip was a great success on a number of individual notes. Ben Barwise scored an unbeaten 50 and Charlie Parker and Jasper Houchell shared the best bowling figures, taking five wickets between them.

2019 Sports Dates

A 2019 Sports calendar with all trainings, trial matches and events has been uploaded to Redlands Pulse. It’s a working document with some additions made as they come to hand, but should be able to give everyone an idea of the 2019 sporting landscape.

Photos

I’m desperate for action Basketball shots – any action shots from any teams would be really welcome. Our teams are having great seasons and I’d love to be able to showcase their performances on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall. Student Achievements

All students did a remarkable job on Wednesday and Thursday last week in the End of Year Concert. A beautiful performance, with all students delivering an extremely well executed concert. We would also like to acknowledge not only the students on their terrific performance, but also thank the teachers and the volunteers and the Friends of Ballet & Dance who worked for many months to help getting the concert ready in time. Well done everyone.

Please note that the EOYC photographs are available online. Please use the password Redlands2018 if you have not had access in previous years.

The link to the Concert video will be provided shortly, after editing, on Redlands Pulse. As per the parent letter the link will replace DVDs.

Music

The Music Department would like to take this opportunity to thank the parent community for all their support throughout the year and in providing their child with the wonderful opportunity to learn a musical instrument and explore their singing voices. In reflecting on the year passed, we would like to take the time to acknowledge students enrolled in the Academic Music program, individuals who take weekly Music Tuition lessons and the young musicians who work collaboratively as part of the Music Ensembles program. In recognising these successes, we look forward to celebrating many musical achievements in the various end of year performances over the coming week. We would also like to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of our Specialist Music staff who work tirelessly to create exciting and inspiring musical learning experiences. The role of leading professional musicians in delivering weekly rehearsals is integral to the ongoing successes of the Music program at Redlands.

Music Department Launch Event – Jazz in the Garden – Saturday 9 March (6.00pm)

We are pleased to announce that the Music Department launch event has been renamed Jazz in The Garden, and will be held next year on Saturday 9 March at 6.00pm. In working in association with the Friends of Music, the department will host performances in the garden and forecourt outside the John Roberts Centre, presented in the style of an outdoor picnic (BYO picnic rug, seating, food and non-alcoholic beverages). As an event that brings together musicians from both the Junior Campus and Secondary Campus, we ask that you all place the Music Department launch event into your diaries. We are certainly looking forward to an exciting ‘outdoor music experience’.

Congratulations to the many students who have undertaken external examinations this year as they have pursued the learning of an instrument or explored their singing voices. The results listed below are students who achieved outstanding results with the various listed Music Examination bodies.

Junior and Secondary Carols Services

The Junior and Secondary School Carol Services are being held in the Robert Dunnet Hall this week, as coordinated by the School Chaplains in conjunction with the Music Department. This end of year gathering for the school community is an important time in reflecting and celebrating our heritage as a school in approach of the festive season. We would like to acknowledge the Junior and Secondary School musicians who have invested time rehearsing and refining repertoire for these events. It is such a wonderful opportunity for our musicians to perform in front of their peers and the wider school community. Thanks to our MICs of Ensembles, conductors and accompanists for their role in preparing the students for these performances.

Music Instrumental Program 2019

Over the last weeks of this term, all students in Yr 3 have participated in instrument trials in preparation for MIP 2018. Please note that MIP allocations for next year will be confirmed over the coming week and parents will be contacted via email.

Instrument Return

All Yr 5 MIP students have now returned their hire instruments to the Music Department. Please return any outstanding instruments to the Junior Music Office. Students who hire an instrument from Redlands and are involved in a cocurricular ensemble or private tuition do not need to return their instrument at this time.

Junior Music Ensembles 2019 – Auditions

Redlands Music Department invites students to audition for the Junior Concert Band, Junior Voices and Junior Chamber Program. Information and audition application forms are available from the Junior Music Office.
