Year 11

Yr 11 Camp

Yr 11 camp is always considered as one of the most memorable and remarkable experience for Redlands students. And, last week was a great success! We were very blessed with decent weather, plenty of snow and outstanding support throughout the week. Many experienced staff considered this Camp as one of the most smooth-running and eventless Yr 11 Camps ever. No matter what lines students chose, either doing a top alpine hike, mountain biking through the pretty Thredbo Valley track, skiing or snowshoeing through the pristine trails among twisted snow gums, they worked together as a group, having fun whilst supporting each other through challenges. The memories they created together, whether it was sweet, magical, or awkward, had great emotional importance, that even when time may be adding a rose-coloured hue, it would still keep alive and vivid. Well done to our boys and girls.

Students’ Achievement

Congratulations to Isabel Binnekamp and Lachlan van der Pluijm who both won Gold medals by placing in the top 24 students in the recent Australian Science Olympiad examinations. Isabel was awarded a Gold medal in Biology and Lachlan in Earth and Environmental Science. Isabel and Lachlan have also been invited to attend the 2019 Olympiad Summer School at ANU, after which the Australian Science Olympiad teams are selected. We are very proud of these students for their achievements and for having this opportunity to participate in this prestigious program.

Among nearly 400 sailors from the country, Laser Radial sailor and member of the Australian Youth Sailing team, Zac West (17), won the 2018 NSW/ACT Youth Open State Sailing Championship. After some local racing, Zac will take part in Sail Sydney in December, and will then head to Tasmania for the National Youth Championships. Good luck!

CanTeen Bandana Day Fundraiser

Thank you to every student who has been helping with this event this week, either at the front and back entrances before school, or during recess and at lunchtime. This fundraiser and event aims to help young people cope with cancer within their family. Through CanTeen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and – if they have been diagnosed, CanTeen provides specialist youth-specific treatment teams.

Pastoral Care Activities

The focus of this week is about “getting organised”. At the beginning of Yr 12, it is an important time for students to have a clear idea of how to allocate their time effectively and efficiently in order to have a balanced life. Students were also asked to download their course syllabus and to familiarise themselves with the assessment schedule and polices. If parents would like to help their child to improve the home learning environment, you also may find it useful to check Dr Prue Salter’s website: User name: redlands; Password: 68results

Box of Books Presentation

Redlands is piloting an eBook platform – Box of Books. Students went to the presentation on Wednesday which aimed to help them to integrate ebooks and resources (most of their texts books) into their daily learning. Hopefully it will reduce the carrying load of their heavy school bags.
