Alumni Update

Reunion Class of 1958 – Wednesday 10 October

Twenty nine Old Girls reunited at the Queens Club, Sydney. Dana Casimaty, Director of Development, provided the group with an update on the School including the new development, recent academic results and our efforts to maintain connections with Alumni. The guests were very interested in the recent developments such as the John Roberts Centre and the New Learning Hub..

“We had an amazing time, friendships we developed at Redlands are life-lasting”. Judy Burton, reunion co-organiser.

“I was sad to leave the School as I had been there since Kindy”. Sue Hewitt

Redlander Alumna Turns 100

Last week Alumna, Mrs Mavis Sommerlad (nee Patterson), celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mrs Sommerlad is the oldest Redlander and an old girl we are extremely proud of and inspired by. She was Dux in 1935, a Prefect, a talented sportswoman, a debater and skier and equally good at arts and sciences at School. She attended Redlands from Kindergarten to the Leaving Certificate.

Mrs Sommerlad has very kindly donated an incredible amount of material to the Redlands Archives, which our Archivist uses frequently.

At University in the mid-1930s, she arrived to find that there were no girls on the editorial staff of Honi Soit, the student newspaper. When she and some other female students challenged the boys, they said the girls should stick to learning how to cook. The girls baked each boy on the editorial staff a cake and turned in their copy to the student newspaper to show that girls were equally adept at running the home and having a career, thus breaking the Old Boys network at Sydney University. Mavis so impressed the editor, Lloyd Sommerlad, they got married! Happy Birthday Mrs Sommerlad!

Marvellous Mixtures

Last week, the Yr 2 cohort participated in an engaging and hands-on incursion lead by Fizzics Education. The Marvellous Mixtures session provided a wonderful launchpad for the Science-based Inquiry unit this term. Through the different investigations, students were able to combine and separate materials, whilst making predictions and observations along the way. The students demonstrated exceptional scientific thinking and they were able to make connections with past learning experiences.

Yr 2 Parent Information Session

This week, Head of Junior School, Mr Ari Guha, sent Yr 2 parents an email outlining the Junior School Information Session which will be held in Week 4, in the Junior School Arnold Library between 5.30 – 7.00pm on Thursday 8 November. As well as hearing an overview about the Junior School, families will also receive information from other leaders in the Junior School as well as representatives from Sport and Performing Arts on what will be similar and what might be different from the Preparatory School. The care and support for the smooth transition of each student will also be outlined by Yr 2 Coordinator, Mrs. Sharp. Following this session, on Friday 9 November all of our Yr 2 students, as well as new students joining the Year Group in 2019, will spend time in our Yr 3 classrooms, rotating through each of the four classes doing a different, fun activity with our current Yr 3 teaching team. This will be another important step in this transition between Prep and Junior sections of our School.

Remembrance

Last Monday saw a multitude of Redlands Board members, families and staff celebrate the life of teacher, friend and colleague, Belinda Oxley. Through tears and laughter, guests heard Ms Vanessa Finlayson eloquently share beautiful moments of Belinda’s professional and personal life, with particular reference to her dedication, selflessness and strength. A memorable moment was when an ex-student poignantly remembered Miss Oxley, his favourite teacher in Yr 2, mentioning that it was she alone who inspired and led him into a career in Art. Thank you to Fiona McKenzie, Shelly Acland, Sam Kourakis and Deputy Principal, Sarah McGarry, for their unwavering support of the Early Childhood staff at this very difficult time.

Redlands House/Transition Gold

ICT in Transition Gold (TG)

This term, Transition Gold are visiting the media room on Tuesdays for lessons with eLearning specialist teacher, Ms Rugg. This week, the children were very excited and listened carefully when Ms Rugg explained that they would be taking robots “around the world” this term. In the coming weeks, the children will learn how to program Bee Bot robots using simple coding. They were introduced to directional coding using a floor grid and an iPad app so that they can begin practicing before programming the individual robots. Their first lesson finished with the exploration of Google Earth using ideas of travel destinations around the world. TG are counting down the days until next Tuesday’s lesson. A very big thank you to Ms Rugg for her inspirational ideas.

Yr 11 Camp

Last week our Yr 11 (moving into Yr 12) had their Camp in the Snowy Mountains where students engaged in a week of outdoor education and leadership training activities in separate groups before all students and teachers returned to our High Country Campus on Thursday evening for a dinner and celebration. This final dinner was meant to not only culminate their experiences in the bush, but also to signify the completion of Yr 11 and their transition into Yr 12. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this year’s Camp due to a foot injury. However, I videoed a message to the students which they watched at their dinner and have included an excerpt below.

“A final message I want to leave you with comes from the All Blacks team culture which is to Follow the Spearhead. In the Maori culture the term “whanau” has come to symbolise an extended family. Brothers, sisters, mates, community, team. And for you – this is your class, your Year Group. Those sitting around you tonight The whanau is symbolised by a spearhead. All three tips of the spearhead have to be working in unison, aligned properly, for the spear to fly far and straight. You can’t have anyone working or pulling against the others. Instead, you need to work together in collaboration and harmony, without dissent. Many sporting teams have various analogies to symbolise this whanau. The Sydney Swans AFL team put a high priority on how the character of the individual adds to the team culture. John Wooden, the legendary American Basketball coach at UCLA, used to say that “a player who makes the team great, is a great player”. And for the All Blacks their mantra is that no player is bigger than the team.

So, my final message for you is to continue to develop and strengthen your whanau. You are an extended family who, by working together and supporting each other every step of the way, will have an amazing year ahead of you. So, once again, congratulations on your ascension to Yr 12 and for completing the Yr 11 Camp. I hope you enjoy tonight, and I am sorry I’m not down there to enjoy it with you. And I look forward to seeing you back at school next week and supporting you on the exciting final 12 months of your Redlands journey.”

RPFA Thank You

Last Thursday was the RPFA Annual General Meeting and Volunteer Thank You Evening. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend in person. However, I would like to take this opportunity to extend our appreciation and thanks to all of the parents who support the Secondary School in so many different ways. Whether it be through cocurricular Friends of Groups, assisting in Learning Plus or as a Year Group volunteer, our wonderful parent community plays such an important role in so many different areas. I have said many times that our strength is our community at Redlands and the positive partnership between School and home continues to foster this strength.

International Baccalaureate Turns 50

This year the International Baccalaureate Programme turns 50 and on Thursday 25 October we celebrated its 50th birthday at Redlands. We are also proud to be able to offer a choice of either the IB or the HSC for our Yr 11 and 12 students as both program provide rigourous, comprehensive and stimulating educational opportunities for our senior students to prepare them for “life-readiness”.

Yr 12 HSC and IB Examinations

Last Thursday 18 October our current HSC students commenced their final HSC Examinations while our IB cohort begin their final IB Examinations on Monday 29 October. We wish all of our graduating Yr 12 students all the best on these final examinations.

From the Principal

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the International Baccalaureate and we were delighted to celebrate this  milestone on our Senior Campus. This year is a dual celebration for our School as we also commemorate 30 years since the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme was introduced at Redlands. We are so proud to have offered this qualification longer than any other school in NSW.

I returned to School on Monday this week following a study trip to Britain and Hungary, which also included attending our very successful International Alumni Reunion in London. I will write more about my study trip in an upcoming edition of Note Day.

I wish to add my personal thanks to all of the parents who so generously volunteer their time to support the School in so many ways and it was wonderful that they could be recognised at our Volunteer Thank You function last week.

I also congratulate the finalists who were selected to perform at the Senior Instrumental Competition on Monday night, and especially recognise the following winners:

Division 1 (Years 7-8):     Jaida Gwilliam

Division 2 (Years 9-10):   Alex Kim, who was also awarded Overall Winner

Division 3 (Years 11-12):   Matilda Rose Williams

More details about this event can be found in the Music section of Note Day.

We look forward to celebrating World Teachers’ Day tomorrow, and we thank our RPFA Class and Year Parents (and our student body) for the thought and care that has gone into plans for tomorrow. We do appreciate the efforts and professionalism of our teachers, and all our staff, and we know that small acts of gratitude and recognition shown to individuals in a personal way means so very much to each of us. However, celebrating in a collective way on a day like World Teachers’ Day help to recognise the professionalism, expertise and commitment demonstrated by dedicated professionals. Why not spend a few minutes around the dinner table tonight reflecting on the impact that a teacher has made on your own lives?

Service

Service Prefects for 2019

Welcome to the incoming Service Prefects Isabel Binnekamp and Lachlan van der Pluijm.

Both Issy and Lochie have been very actively engaged in Redlands life throughout Secondary School and have participated in many of the Service initiatives available within school and in the wider community. They have shared with me some insights about Service and their new roles:

What does service mean to you?

  • Issy – Service is to show genuine compassion and care for our fellow human beings. I hope I can role model kindness, respect and understanding for others. If you see me around feel free to say hi.
  • Lochie – Service for me is to put the needs of others in the community above those of your own.

How can Service be demonstrated within our school community?

  • Lochie – One of the easiest ways to serve our school community is to donate your time and to lend a hand within the school community. Whether nominating yourself to run for a student body, or assisting others through maths or reading clubs, I firmly believe there is the opportunity for everyone to help make a difference.
  • Issy – For me personally, empathy for others and humility which has always motivated my involvement in Service. It is important to put the needs of others before your own, and to think of others before yourself. C.S. Lewis summarised this well by saying, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less”.

Where or how can Redlands contribute beyond our school community?

  • Lochie – There are numerous opportunities for Redlands students to serve the community. Locally, Redlands has long standing partnerships with charities such as Matthew Talbot, Clean Up Australia, The Smith Family, and Anglicare. In addition, Redlands runs numerous Service trips each year, assisting less fortunate communities abroad in countries such as Fiji, Cambodia and Tanzania. These activities both build new skills and widen outlooks, and I urge everyone to get involved and take part.
  • Issy – I look forward to leading students with the many Service initiatives this year to contribute both within and beyond our school community. In Term 4 alone, Redlands will be selling bandannas for CanTeen, contributing to The Matthew Talbot Hostel Christmas donation drive, collecting Toys and Tucker for Anglicare, gift wrapping for Mary’s House and fundraising for Assistance Dogs Australia.

Why is Service, philanthropy or a helping hand important in our world today?

  • Issy – Having attended Redlands since the age of three, I have seen first-hand how Service is viewed as a key element within our school community and beyond. We are encouraged to use our practical skills and resources to play a positive role in society.
  • Lochie – Often in our world there is a fixation on the individual especially through the prevalence of both technology and social media. Lending a hand to someone else offers the opportunity to build a connection between you and the surrounding community. In addition to this, I believe from service comes an intrinsic reward from knowing that you helped someone else, and made a small change for the better.
CanTeen Bandanna Day

This week our focus has been on CanTeen Bandanna Day, with a very proactive team of Yr 11 students volunteering their time to sell the Canteen Bandannas before, during and after school. Tomorrow is the day we are encouraging students to wear their new bandannas to show their support of CanTeen, an Australian organisation for young people affected by cancer. CanTeen helps young people cope with cancer in their family. Through CanTeen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and – if they’ve been diagnosed themselves, CanTeen provides specialist youth-specific treatment teams.

Yr 11 Camp

Yr 11 camp is always considered as one of the most memorable and remarkable experience for Redlands students. And, last week was a great success! We were very blessed with decent weather, plenty of snow and outstanding support throughout the week. Many experienced staff considered this Camp as one of the most smooth-running and eventless Yr 11 Camps ever. No matter what lines students chose, either doing a top alpine hike, mountain biking through the pretty Thredbo Valley track, skiing or snowshoeing through the pristine trails among twisted snow gums, they worked together as a group, having fun whilst supporting each other through challenges. The memories they created together, whether it was sweet, magical, or awkward, had great emotional importance, that even when time may be adding a rose-coloured hue, it would still keep alive and vivid. Well done to our boys and girls.

Students’ Achievement

Congratulations to Isabel Binnekamp and Lachlan van der Pluijm who both won Gold medals by placing in the top 24 students in the recent Australian Science Olympiad examinations. Isabel was awarded a Gold medal in Biology and Lachlan in Earth and Environmental Science. Isabel and Lachlan have also been invited to attend the 2019 Olympiad Summer School at ANU, after which the Australian Science Olympiad teams are selected. We are very proud of these students for their achievements and for having this opportunity to participate in this prestigious program.

Among nearly 400 sailors from the country, Laser Radial sailor and member of the Australian Youth Sailing team, Zac West (17), won the 2018 NSW/ACT Youth Open State Sailing Championship. After some local racing, Zac will take part in Sail Sydney in December, and will then head to Tasmania for the National Youth Championships. Good luck!

CanTeen Bandana Day Fundraiser

Thank you to every student who has been helping with this event this week, either at the front and back entrances before school, or during recess and at lunchtime. This fundraiser and event aims to help young people cope with cancer within their family. Through CanTeen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and – if they have been diagnosed, CanTeen provides specialist youth-specific treatment teams.

Pastoral Care Activities

The focus of this week is about “getting organised”. At the beginning of Yr 12, it is an important time for students to have a clear idea of how to allocate their time effectively and efficiently in order to have a balanced life. Students were also asked to download their course syllabus and to familiarise themselves with the assessment schedule and polices. If parents would like to help their child to improve the home learning environment, you also may find it useful to check Dr Prue Salter’s website: User name: redlands; Password: 68results

Box of Books Presentation

Redlands is piloting an eBook platform – Box of Books. Students went to the presentation on Wednesday which aimed to help them to integrate ebooks and resources (most of their texts books) into their daily learning. Hopefully it will reduce the carrying load of their heavy school bags.

Yr 10 School Duties

While the current Yr 11s were attending camp last week, a number of Yr 10 students stepped up to cover their duties at school. Yr 12 would like to publicly acknowledge and thank the following Yr 10 students: Renata Ferreira, Maya Auld, Olivia Hatch, India van der Velde, Maddi Howard, Catie Brunton, Miranda Renwick, Lucy Wrigglesworth, Yuma Yasumura, Grace Bracks, Anna Saunders, Sophie Gautheron, Steph Larcos, Faith Oosthuizen, Yasmin Gupta, Saskia Jane, Tadgh Robinson, Sienna Gray, Leilani Heath, Jennifer Grant, Emily Colvin, Tash Richardson, Alex York, Harrison Garrett, Riley Felton, Jasmine Hill, Izzy Simpson, Maddy Hampton-Vickers, Monique Pascoe, Tom Morris, Noah Pincini, Lauren Burke and Ashleigh Locke. I would also like to thank Mrs Kristen Privett for organising the schedule for duties and for her work during Term 3 as Assistant Year Advisor with our Yr 10s.

Term Overview

We have a short, but extremely busy, term for Yr 10, both academically and in terms of cocurricular activities. Some forward planning and guidance with your child about scheduling, time management and maintaining a good balance between study, social life, rest and exercise, should maintain their well-being throughout the next seven weeks. Examinations commence on the week starting Monday 5 November concluding with the Harbour Cruise on the Friday evening, followed by camp the next week. Many students will be occupied with rehearsals for the Ballet and Dance Concert and Speech Night performances in Weeks 6 and 7, as well as Musical audition call-backs and rehearsals. To wrap up a busy term, Yr 10 will be involved in Australian Business Week, a week-long project-based learning experience run through our Social Science Department, the week beginning 26 November. It is an exciting term, but one that will require stamina and good time management and organisational skills. Tutors are currently supporting students with their examination preparation in Tutor Time. Please be mindful of your child’s busy schedule and check-in with them throughout the term.

Monday Mindfulness

Mindfulness Monday aims to encourage students to be fully present, aware of where they are and what they’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around them.

Students practiced mindfulness through a range of classroom activities lead by our Yr 9 Tutors which included Meditation, Colour Therapy, Tea Drinking, Colouring In, Music Therapy and Mindful Sudoku. Mindfulness Monday will continue until the end of term and will encourage students to unwind, relax and live in the present moment, particularly in the lead up to their Yearly Examinations.

Uniform

Since Term 1, when students were last wearing summer uniform, many have grown. Students were given a grace period until tomorrow Friday 26 October with regards to uniform. Please can I ask that you check your son or daughter’s hem length. Girls uniforms should reach the knee. Many boys require a haircut, and for many boys, trouser hem length needs attention. Students of this age should take ownership for their appearance, this includes shining their own shoes and ironing their own uniform.

Yr 9 Yearly Examinations

The Yearly Examination period is fast approaching, Term 4, Week 4, Monday 5- 9 November. This year, our Yr 9 students will be given some allowances including being allowed to leave school at lunchtime four days of the exam week (although not Thursday due to Sport). With such privileges also comes responsibility. Students are required to go directly home in full school uniform. Students are not to loiter, they are not to buy food, go to Woolworths or to McDonalds. Any student found not adhering to this will remain at school for the duration of the normal school day. Students also have the option of remaining at school and engaging in private study in the Roseby Library. Please could I ask for your prompt assistance by signing the online permission to permit your son or daughter’s early departure during the examination week. Online permission needs to be completed by tomorrow, Friday 26 October. Please be advised that the link is in the Examination letter sent to parents Wednesday 17 October.

Furthermore, it is normal for students to feel nervous about the upcoming examinations, however if your son or daughter is feeling stressed or anxious please notify me so that we can ensure that they receive the appropriate support.

CanTeen Fundraiser- Bandana Day

This year’s CanTeen Bandanna Day will be held on Friday 26 October. Bandannas have been available for purchase this week at the front and back entrances before school, during recess and at lunch. Bandannas can be worn on Friday to show support and all funds raised will go to CanTeen, an Australian organisation for young people affected by cancer. CanTeen helps young people cope with cancer in their family. Trough CanTeen, they learn to explore and deal with their feelings about cancer, connect with other young people in the same boat and – if they’ve been diagnosed, CanTeen provides specialist youth-specific treatment teams.

Youth Mental Health Forum #strongerthanstigma

On Monday, Assistant Year Advisor, Ms Mountain, took five students to the Youth Mental Health Forum, established and hosted by MP Felicity Wilson, and run by the not-for-profit mental health organisation, Burn Bright. Will Christie, Ella Delaney,  Amber Judd, Jessica Wei and Lauren Zhang had volunteered to attend the forum to learn more about the mental health issues that young people face today and how to look after your wellbeing in times of stress and difficulty.

The day was an interactive and participative one, where the students were encouraged to interact with other students from schools such as Marist Brothers and Monte. Speakers on the day shared their personal journeys as well as advice from working in organisations aimed to help young people, such as Lucy Brogden from the National Mental Health Commission.

The day highlighted just how serious the problem is for young people of today, as 7 out of 30 students in a class suffer from some form of mental health concern and yet very few of them actually seek help. Some confronting topics were discussed, including the high rate of suicide present today for 15-25 year olds. Guest speakers talked about the importance of looking after yourself, in particularly through using meditation, exercise, diet and sleep (MEDS) and the developing of positive relationships with friends as being the most important aspect of emotional wellbeing.

For the final session of the day, we worked in our school groups, coming up with ideas as to how we could improve the issue of student wellbeing in our own school. All of the students enthusiastically brainstormed ideas such as electing a Captain of Wellbeing in the school as a Yr 12 leadership role as well as implementing an online forum to provide help and advice to others.

Science

This week, students in Ms Scott’s class investigated convection currents in Science. They observed how bubbles and a paper snake behaved in the hot air and used the particle theory of matter to try and explain this phenomena.

Yr 8 Yearly Examinations

Steps to successful study and examination preparation has continued to be our focus in Pastoral Care this week. Students have worked with their Tutors to identify techniques to assist with exam readiness and working through the required steps to assist students to remain calm and stress free as they get closer to Week 3.

Lunchtime sessions have also been offered to students, providing further practical strategies to engage in mindfulness and stress reduction techniques.

Monday – Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Tuesday – Colouring In and Mindfulness
Wednesday – Yoga and Meditation
Thursday – Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Friday – Visualisation

Examinations

Attendance at examinations is compulsory. Should your child be unable to attend school an email must be sent to me and ssabsence@redlands.nsw.edu.au. A supporting medical certificate must be provided.

Included are some final tips and hints for parents and students to assist with preparation.

At least a few days before the exam, encourage the following:

  • Ensure students continue to exercise so they can burn off the pent-up stress that can come before exams.
  • Provide your child with lots of water to juice up their brain, healthy food, decent sleep.
  • Purchase any equipment your child may need, extra calculator batteries, pens, rulers etc.
  • Revise examination equipment lists with your child.
  • Ensure that students have a clear pencil case and clear drink bottle to take into the examination room.
  • Encourage revision of key subject points.
  • Revise the examination schedule with your child.

The night before the test or exam, students have been encouraged to:

  • Pack their bag with everything they will need for the next day, ensuring they have all necessary equipment.
  • Plan what time they need to leave to ensure they have plenty of time for unexpected delays.
  • Avoid going to bed too late – they need to make sure their brain is fresh and alert.
  • Avoid ringing friends and discussing their preparation or the examination.
  • Just before you go to sleep, look through your notes briefly.
  • Check the timetable to doubly confirm the date, time and location of the exam.

Finally, on the morning of the test or exam students should:

  • Visualise success.
  • Review notes.
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Be on time.
  • Avoid negativity.

Parent Volunteer Appreciation

Last Thursday, I joined a number of Senior Executive staff, Board Directors and Junior School teachers at our annual School Thank You to our many parent volunteers, whose positive contributions make such an important difference to our school community.

The voluntary roles that so many parents offer, particularly as Junior School Class Parent representatives, plays a significant role in fostering and strengthening the palpable sense of school community that embodies Redlands. As well as our class parents, I also thank the many parents who were involved in this year’s wonderful Spring Fair or who have also volunteered time and contributed expertise in helping to provide support for students’ learning in both curriculum and extra curricular opportunities over the course of the year.

My sincere appreciation is extended to all of these parents and our Redlands Parents and Friends Association for both their dedication and service to our community; it really does make such a difference.

Maths Olympiad 2018

This year 84 students from Yrs 5 and 6 competed in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads competition, working with Ms Rugg and Mrs Ling to complete five papers over five months. The papers are unique in that they focus on the students’ ability to solve mathematical problems in a creative manner; as opposed to simply reaching a solution using a prescribed method.

We are delighted to say that the team consisting of the Numeracy Enrichment Yr 5 and 6 students scored highly enough to qualify for Outstanding Achievement award that is based on the scores of the top scorers in each team. Congratulations to Mischa Barac in Yr 6 who was the top overall scorer and alongside Chloe Bailey (Yr 5), Arya Gapaillard (Yr 6) and Hugo Ward (Yr 5), they all finished in the top 2% of participants. Daisy Thomas, Harry Fenton, Rafferty Heard, Conor Petersen, Mitchell Travers-Wolf (all Yr 6) and Krishna Gupta, Piper Bradley and Tabitha Galvin (all Yr 5), achieved highly commendable scores that contributed to the team’s overall ranking and that placed them in the top 10% of participants.

A pleasing number of other students in both Yrs 5 and 6 achieved results in the top 50% of participants. What was most impressive though, was the levels of enthusiasm and energy that all the students brought to the papers. Mrs Ling and Ms Rugg commented that that there is an almost palpable atmosphere of concentration and effort in the room whilst students tackle what are often very challenging questions. Well done to all the students who took part and certificates and badges will be presented to all participants over the next week.

Yr 5 Bathurst Excursion

Yr 5 wasted no time heading out last Tuesday in search of gold as part of their Units of Inquiry topic. The Bathurst Goldfields was the destination for their overnight visit and this opportunity to experience the goldfields will serve as an important part of their study of this era in Australian history. My thanks are extended to Mrs Benneyworth for her organisation of the trip and to the team of Yr 5 teachers and Mrs Parton for accompanying them on this valuable experiential learning opportunity to kickstart the term.

Yr 6 Fair and Rock in the Quad

Next Tuesday lunchtime, Yr 6 students will be hosting their annual fair to raise towards leaving a legacy gift for the Junior School on behalf of their cohort. In recent years, this has been a water refilling station and outdoor furniture for students and each class will run an activity stand and a food stall, including sponge throwing, tug of war, an obstacle course, ball shoot out and temporary tattoos. The food stands will include popcorn, lolly bags, cupcakes, icy poles and fruit treats. All activities will cost between 50c and $2 and Junior School students would like to be involved, they are encouraged to bring coins on the day. Please note that this will not be an event for Prep students.

At the same time, we will again host Rock in the Quad, where our Junior School student rock bands will rock out a few tunes for the students to enjoy as part of the lunchtime events.

Lost Property

After a considerable repatriation and clear out process at the end of last term, we already have a few unnamed items of lost property clothing in Reception, which we would love to return to their owners, knowing that these items are not cheap. If these items could belong to your child, please direct them to Reception for collection.

Redlands fleece – sizes 10K and 14K
Hockey hoodie – size 10K
Boy’s Blazer – size 10
Girl’s Blazer – size 30 approx. with Dance badges
Razor scooter
Ray Ban reading glasses – pale blue frames

School Bus Pass Applications 2019

We have been advised that School student applications for 2019 have now opened from Monday 15 October.

Students progressing to Yr 3 and Yr 7 do not need to re-apply if they:

  • are continuing at the same school
  • are residing at the same address
  • have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2018 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31 December 2018, the system will automatically cancel a card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out during December 2018 and January 2019.

Leadership in Sports

At the End of Term 3, we announced and inducted our student leaders for the Class of 2019. This was a significant moment within the school community, where the transfer of leadership from one student Year Group to the next was affirmed in front of the student body. In Redlands Sport, we aim for our students to feel empowered and engaged with the decisions and direction of the sport they participate in. The roles of the student leaders are critical in achieving this. Recently, at our Pre-Season Sport Camp, our 1sts Basketball girls and boys teams undertook a goal setting session with Mr Tom Garlepp (former Sydney Kings Captain and NBL All Star). One of the critical questions Tom asked the boys and girls to answer was, to “outline what they wanted their team to be remembered for?” This question was confronting for many of the students. The majority of the team felt they should just be told the answer by staff and coaches however, it is important for our students to feel a level of engagement in the direction and leadership of their teams. Some of our students were easily confused by the notions – Who is empowered? What does engagement mean? Is someone getting married?

All through professional sporting teams, as well as in the media, we are seeing the concept of leadership ‘groups’ within a team; not just one appointed leader. Gone are the days where coaches coached, managers managed and players played. Now we are seeing teams embracing a leadership model based on empowerment of the collective group. Even the media now reports on the actions and decisions (right or wrong) of leadership groups and has shown respect to the roles they now play within sports. Whether it is pre-meditated ball tampering in Cricket or the positive mentoring of new players into the culture of an AFL club, more and more leadership groups are now being seen as the ‘best practice in developing effective teams’.

There are several good reasons as to why we have adopted this mentality in sport –

  • Society demands accountability and in order to achieve this we need consultation and communication with the collective. Dictatorships and autocratic leadership is no longer viewed as productive or conducive to reaching a goal.
  • Teams need to develop the ability to make decisions and problem solve independently of a coach or live data. Leadership groups must obtain the confidence to action their decisions and use the people around them to make the most informed decision possible for their desired outcome.
  • Sport itself has changed. The impact of commercial activities and profits are inextricably linked to sport. So much so, this commercialisation has changed the way games are played, officiated and consumed. A growing need for sport to be dynamic, fast paced and free flowing now requires athletes to make quick decisions about how and when to play the game in many varying contexts.

A key element of a successful leadership is acknowledging we must all learn to lead. A position or title does not automatically create leadership. Individuals and teams are encouraged to learn how to lead and what actions and behaviours they require to reflect their desired outcomes in any given situation. Luckily, sport is conducive to this type of learning. Having opportunities for all students to engage in team sports enables them to experience leadership and change – skills that are invaluable to them both now and into the future.

Basketball

Congratulations to both our 1st Boys and Girls Basketball teams who competed in the pre-season tournaments over the weekend. The 1st Boys managed to finish top of their pool after beating St Pat’s, BMGS and SACS in a clean sweep. A tough crossover against CCGS saw Redlands down by ten points at the final siren. The final game against Oakhill was another tough game, but finishing in 4th was a great result for the day. The 1st Girls won their first two games against SACS and St Pauls, before falling short in the game against CCGS. A great final game against BMGS saw the team finishing in 3rd place for the day.

Round 1 commences this Saturday 27 October. Please check Redlands Pulse for the game details this weekend. Best of luck to all teams in Round 1.

Rowing

Last weekend saw the Rowing program take the opportunity to acknowledge a number of people who have made a significant contribution over a number of years. We were able to name a number of the single sculls after previous Captains of Rowing including Natascha Barac and Gabe O’Sullivan who are completing the Yr 12 IB and HSC respectively. All of these students have been high achievers on the water along with all other areas of their school life including academics. James Townsend (Boys Captain of Rowing – 2016) privately tutored a number of students during and after Yr 12, and while he coached with Redlands briefly, he has recently moved to Armidale, where he is studying Medicine at the University of New England.

We were also able to name our newest quad after Lisa MacDonald. Lisa served as the President of the Friends of Rowing group for two years along with organising our corporate Rowing program for three seasons where she oversaw the program more than doubling in size. She is currently in her 4th year of service on the Redlands Parent and Friends Association including the past two years as the Chairperson.

A huge thank you to our current Friends of Rowing committee for organising the BBQ for our families and students!

This weekend we will be attending our first regatta of the season with the whole program heading to the Hunter Valley Grammar School regatta held at Berry Park. Please refer to the information found on the Rowing page of Redlands Pulse for further details.

Junior Sport

All fixtures this week are as per the original draw except for Red Tennis team, whose venue has changed to Sydney Centre for Tennis, 33 Mallett Street, Camperdown. Match time is still 8.00am.

Our morning sessions are really taking off with nearly 90 students training this morning across the range of before school offerings. Our Basketball teams had almost 60 students training this Wednesday and the buzz through the gym was great. Mr Rogers’ Boxing Fitness classes are proving hugely popular and we’re already looking to develop skills in footballers for 2019 with skills and drills football happening on the cricket nets on a Wednesday morning for any interested players.

Coming off the back of a weekend with some great games and tremendous wins, our Basketball program is flying. Dunnet Hall proved a tough fortress to crack for our guests Trinity and our teams looked strong. I had the pleasure of coaching some of our teams at Trinity and was super impressed with our tenacity across the board. Our kids showed loads of fight and battled hard against some tough opponents.

Girls basketballers are really benefiting from the early sessions, and looked well drilled in the fundamental skills, taking out four of their six matches last weekend and going down narrowly in high scoring matches in the other two. Great signs ahead for our girls who, for many, are having their first tilt at competitive Basketball.

For parents looking for active after school options for their kids in 2019, Monday sees Coach Javier Carpio running a skills and drills academy for Football enthusiasts, running from 3.30-5.00pm. Javier has the kids working through skills and Football specific fitness sessions. Sessions are $30 and students are welcome to come down to Redlands House courts for a free trial this term.

Surf Education

Please check your online permission for the upcoming Surf Education program. Students from Yrs 3-6 will be attending Surf Education lessons as part of the PE Curriculum in Weeks 4 and 5. As we are entering the Sydney summer it’s a great chance for students to be reminded of safety on the beach and in the water. The kids will be under the instruction of Surf Live Saving, will be undertaking a range of rescues, water danger identification, basic first aid and some fun beach games. The program this year is being administered at Freshwater beach with a new surf tuition provider. It looks like it’ll be awesome.

Photos

We love photos and showing off your great action shots from sports fixtures on Saturday. If anyone has any pics or takes any, I love to use them to showcase our current teams and past teams on the rolling display in Dunnet Hall. Please send me the pics, or a link or even pop them in on a USB (it will be returned) to the Sports Office or email them
