Alumni Award Presentation: Emma Colenbrander
Emma is a 2006 Redlands Alumni who was honoured with a Redlander Alumni Award in 2022. This award aims to celebrate the achievements of alumni. Emma is a social entrepreneur, intrapreneur and international development professional. She is founder and Head of the Global Distributors Collective, an alliance over 200 companies around the world that distribute beneficial products, such as solar lights, clean cook stoves and water filters, to people living in poverty.
On Monday, Emma visited Redlands and she was able to share her journey with our Yr 11 students. She shared many tips and advice, including her main piece of advice: to not be too careful when you are young and starting your career. While she had a strong promising position upon graduation from university, she took a chance moving to India and working with a non-profit agency. This experience changed her entire trajectory for her future. She urged all students to remain open-minded, to take big risks and to focus on their interests instead of just a particular job or title. She reminded our students that many jobs and positions will continue to change yet your interests will help guide you in a career path.
A special “thank you” to Dana Casimaty, Director of Development, and Kim Flatman, Alumni & Community Engagement Coordinator, for organising Emma’s visit and for allowing Yr 11 to be involved in her visit, her time answering questions from students and in her presentation of her award.
Additionally, “thank you” and a “job well done” to Yr 11 students, Josephine Bannon and Anabelle Cullen, for stepping up and preparing an introduction and conclusion for Emma’s presentation.
Workshop by Officer Lynda Hart
On Monday, Officer Lynda Hart, with over 40 years of experience with NSW Police, presented her workshop: Commissioners Anti-Violence and PLO, Social Media/Relationships/Driving. She shared real stories, some very vivid, of incidents and situations she had come across in her time working with young people. She covered a range of issues including social media, driver education, relationships, consent and safe partying.
At a time when many of our students have their Learner License and will soon move on to their Provisional License, she shared advice around remaining in charge when you are behind the wheel, always driving with a responsible adult, never driving when you or the responsible adult with you are intoxicated and ensuring all distractions (including the phone) are turned off and stored while driving. These are imperative rules to follow to avoid fines and/or penalties and ultimately, to stay safe.
Yr 11 HSC and IB Information Session
Students and parents packed the Hall on Wednesday night for the Yr 11 HSC and IB Information Session. Advice for Yr 11 in general was shared by Gemma Van de Peer and more specific information for each senior program was presented by Darren Taylor, Dean of IB, and Lucy Benjamin, Dean of HSC. A few key reminders from the evening include encouraging students to form strong relationships with their teachers, take ownership over their actions and study, get involved with many activities to keep more organised and motivated, aim to increase study toward 3 hours per night in Yr 12 and incorporate your “escape” in your study planner.
Thank you for your time in joining us this week for this important presentation and the reiteration of expectations as we encourage all students to step up and aim higher. We continue to revisit and reinforce this guidance through Pastoral Care and we appreciate your support of these messages at home as well. Please never hesitate to contact your son/daughter’s Tutor, Year Advisor, classroom teacher or Dean if your child or you have any concerns or further feedback on how we can best support this incredible group of young people toward graduation.
Congratulations Isaac Brooks!
Isaac has been an avid runner for as long as we can remember and he continues to beat school records, his personal bests and move his way up in competition. Isaac came 1st in the U18 Boys 1500m at the NSW Junior Championships, running a Personal Best and earning a national qualifier (4:01.61). Isaac also placed 2nd in the U18 Boys 800m, running 1:56.68.
His coach, Nick Walker, mentioned that in the 1500m, Isaac lead for the first 3 laps and in the last lap, got overtaken by 3 other runners, and managed to run them all down in the last 100m with a big kick – a really exciting race! Congratulations, Isaac and we wish you all the best at Nationals!
Isaacs 1500m final can be viewed here at 7:51.40.
