Issue 5 2023 Term 1 Week 5 - 02 Mar 2023

From the Principal

Be comfortable being uncomfortable.

The above statement is an objective that I and others at the School have been increasingly sharing with our community over the first part of the year. However, as parents it is sometimes hard for us to allow our children to be in a state of discomfort (trust me, as a parent myself, I know). When we see our children worried, anxious, uneasy or uncomfortable, our natural parenting instincts kick in and we want to protect, soothe, support and comfort them.

Despite these best intentions, we also know deep down that it is through their moments of failure and in their times of challenge when they learn and grow the most. I love that at Redlands we have a culture where it is safe for students and staff to try something and fail. This type of culture doesn’t exist at many schools.

The Class of 2023 motto of “Fall Forward” encapsulates this aim, and the captains have been regularly reminding students in assemblies that they should dream big, set goals, try hard and not be afraid to “fall” as they will move “forward” from their failures.

Similarly, in our opening staff meeting at the beginning of the year, I showed staff a “Permission to Innovate” card which states, “This card entitles me to try something new. If it doesn’t work as well as I wanted, I will be free of criticism for my efforts. But I’ll continue to pursue new ways to help my students be successful.” A few staff have told me they have been metaphorically punching their ticket over the first five weeks of the term which is great to hear. I also assured staff that during my time as Principal, I will fail and mistakes; however, I also promised the them that I will reflect, learn and grow from these mistakes.

Recently, many in our community have been stepping out of their comfort zones to try new and different things. Last week our Year 7 students experienced their first Secondary School camp at our High Country Campus in Jindabyne and the surrounding alpine environment. I heard numerous stories of students enjoying their camp experience, but I also know that other students might have found it challenging being away from families, sleeping in tents, climbing Mt Kosciuszko or hanging out with different students from their immediate friendship group. However, I believe the following slogan from one of the camp groups best summarises their spirit, “If you think you can’t, you can’t. If you think you can, you can”.

I also saw Year 2 students stepping out of their comfort zones to ably lead the Prep Assembly this week; Year 11 students being challenged and stretched to step up to the increased academic expectations of Stage 6 at their HSC and IB Information Session on Wednesday evening; or Subject Coordinators stress testing new and innovative assessment tasks at their recent meeting.

I look forward to seeing us increasingly becoming more comfortable being uncomfortable as the result will be continued progress and improvement both individually and collectively at Redlands.

Last weekend was the final regular season round of the Secondary School ISA summer sports season, and I would like to especially acknowledge our Year 12 students who played their last competitive summer sports fixture for Redlands. Their contributions to their various sports, especially during the last few disrupted COVID-19 years, are greatly appreciated. I would also like to wish our rowers who are competing at the Head of the Lake in Canberra this weekend and all ISA summer sports teams who are competing in semi-finals and finals over the next two weeks the very best.

I would like to especially acknowledge Isaac Brooks (Yr 11) who placed second in the U18 Boys 800m event and won the U18 Boys 1500m event at the NSW Junior Athletics Championships last weekend. His 1500m time of 4:01.61 was a personal best and was also a national qualifying time. Isaac certainly stepped out of his comfort zone to achieve an amazing result. Well done, Isaac.

I also congratulate George Murphy, Captain of Skiing, Class of 2021, who represented Australia in the 2023 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships in Bakuriani, Georgia last weekend. George placed 14th in the Dual Moguls and 26th in the Single Moguls. In the lead up to the event, George represented Australia in eight Freestyle Mogul World Cup events, where he placed 20th at Deer Valley Utah. We wish George all the best for his next competition, the Junior World Championships in Switzerland on 23-26 March.

Community Update

It was lovely to welcome our Yr 7 parents and carers at our Meet and Greet event held earlier this week on Fahl Garden. This event provided a terrific opportunity for our parents and carers to hear from our School and Year leaders and to connect with our teaching and support staff along with other parents and carers of Yr 7 students.

The highly anticipated and much loved Autumn Fair takes place on Saturday18 March on our Senior Campus.  It’s a day centred around food, fun and entertainment, showcasing the community’s diversity and talent. Thank you to our dedicated and passionate volunteers who continue to put their hand up in support of the Autumn Fair. Tickets are now on sale and wristbands and coupons can be pre-purchased here to receive a special discount. Further details on the Autumn Fair and how you can help on the day can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of other parent and carer events that connect our community.

It’s always a pleasure to hear what our well-travelled alumni community have been up to, and this week we were delighted to welcome Young Alumni of the Year Award Winner Emma Colbrander (RL 2006) back on campus. Emma provided an engaging snapshot of her journey from Sydney to London and beyond to both our Yr 11 and Yr 5 cohorts.  For more information on Emma’s amazing journey, along with other Alumni and Foundation Office news please visit our Foundation section.

I remain grateful for the continued guidance and support our community provides and, as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Kindest regards

Volunteering at Redlands

We are very proud of our supportive community and the incredible involvement of our parents to lead and participate in various initiatives. One of these initiatives is the Second Hand Uniform Sale which has a long tradition at Redlands. A team of dedicated parent volunteers continue offering this service to our community. This initiative not only supports our Sustainability program, proceeds raised from this sale are contributed towards the means-tested Redlands Foundation Scholarship, the recent one named after Dr Sue Morey AM. Thank you to the RPFA Committee and all volunteers for organising another one on Saturday 1 April. For further details, please visit the RPFA page.

Thank you sincerely to many members of our Redlands community for your generosity and ongoing support! With your help and involvement we can make a difference in the life of deserving students who otherwise would not get the opportunity to experience a Redlands education. For more information, visit HERE

Preserving our Heritage

As part of the School’s ongoing renovation scheme, the Parkes Building on the Junior Campus was upgraded during the summer holidays. The upstairs floor, a home for our Year 3 and 4 classrooms, now enjoys more contemporary furniture as part of the upgrade.

This heritage-listed building had its foundation stone laid on 6 October 1934 and was opened on 6 July 1935. It was a site of former Cremorne Girls High and was bought by Redlands in late 1989 from the NSW Government thanks to the huge support from the Redlands Community at the time. It has become an integral part of the Junior Campus.

Emma Colenbrander RL 2006 visits us from London

We were thrilled to welcome Young Alumni Award Winner Emma Colenbrander (RL 2006) back to Campus on Monday. Emma was a Redlands Academic Scholar and Captain of Basketball. She was also Dux of Year 12 in 2006. Although her visit to Sydney was brief, she made time to ‘Give Back’ to her Alma Mater, speaking with Year 11 students about her journey and career pathways that lead her from Redlands to London where she is now a Director at Spring Impact. She also joined a Year 5 Thinking Routines Session on ‘Our Fragile Environment’ where students were able to ask her lots of questions. Emma is a co-founder of Pollinate Energy, an internationally recognised social business, based in India. Its core mission is to bring life-changing products to people who need them most. Awards include UN Momentum for Change Award, UN SEED Award, Global Humanitarian Engineering Award, Unilever Change maker Finalist, Australian Social Enterprise ‘One to Watch’ Award and Australian representative for the global Chivas Venture competition.

Community Gathering

On Monday afternoon, the Yr 7 Meet and Greet was held on the Fahl Garden. Mr Jimmy Tod-Hill, Year Advisor spoke glowingly of the cohort and their achievements thus far. It was wonderful to be able to share stories of camp and the early days of high school and put faces to names.

Last night, Yr 11 students and their parents/carers gathered in Redlands Hall to ‘Begin the Stage 6 Journey Together’. The evening was very well attended and our Academic Deans of HSC and IB, Ms Lucy Benjamin and Mr Darren Taylor, delivered an informative and inspiring address. The slides for the evening can be found here.

At last night’s event and last week’s Yr 12 Evening ‘Let’s Learn and Celebrate Together’, Mr Taylor and Ms Benjamin spoke directly and candidly about the high impact strategy of a Study Schedule. What we strongly encourage students to follow is a School-Life-Fit Schedule which clearly demarcates time in the day for school, home learning, revision and study (which may include assessment preparation or note consolidation), exercise, down time such as watching tv or cooking, social media time, sport training and matches, etc. By scheduling the various activities in their lives, our young people stay busy, develop effective routines and habits and take structured steps to achieve their purpose – to be a student who is safe, supported and challenged to achieve personal excellence. We thought you might like to see some fine examples of School-Life-Fit Schedules and Senior Study Schedules belonging to current Redlands students. All students have been de-identified.

Year 12

High Support, High Expectations

On the Monday afternoon section meeting, Yr 12 HSC and IB teachers met to discuss the importance of high expectations for our Yr 12 students so that each student, can individually achieve the best possible results. Key areas of discussion included:

  • The importance of Regular Academic Discussions (RADS): As parents, you may receive an email, outlining your child’s academic discussion with a Yr 12 HSC/IB teacher. These discussions will be logged, so you are aware of the academic conversations occurring between the student and their teacher.
  • A key focus on effort and excellence: HSC and IB teachers will be encouraging a Growth Mindset in each and every Yr 12 student, convey confidence in each student and express unconditional positive regard for every Yr 12 student’s ability.
  • Quality Feedback: Every teacher will ensure the teacher’s expectations, exceed the student’s expectations. RADS will be key to the quality feedback provided to Yr 12.
  • Questioning Teacher Assumptions and Beliefs which are Limiting: The importance of HSC/IB teachers challenging Yr 12 students fixed mindset and/or bias/prejudicial thinking and moving from care conversations to courageous conversations which inspire, challenge and interrogate the hard questions from students.

As always, the wellbeing of students in Yr 12 will be a continued focus so that each student is feeling holistically supported for the remainder of their senior year. It is important for Yr 12 to focus on self-care; particularly around assessment time, and communicate with teachers, Ms Benjamin, Mr Taylor, Year Advisers and teachers any concerns which may arise.

Attendance

As part of the high support, high expectations focus, focus on the little things that matter. At this week’s Year assembly, there was an emphasis on the importance of attendance and arriving to school on time, particularly for students who have planned study sessions. Two late arrivals without reasons will result in a lunchtime detention. If a HSC student also misses an assessment due to absence, they will need to complete an Illness and Misadventure Form available on the HSC Core iLearn page.

Week 5 Year Assembly Growth Awards

Congratulations to Elena Parker who received the HSC Growth Award and Ethan McFarlane who received the IB Growth Award at this week’s Year Assembly.

Alumni Award Presentation: Emma Colenbrander

Emma is a 2006 Redlands Alumni who was honoured with a Redlander Alumni Award in 2022. This award aims to celebrate the achievements of alumni. Emma is a social entrepreneur, intrapreneur and international development professional. She is founder and Head of the Global Distributors Collective, an alliance over 200 companies around the world that distribute beneficial products, such as solar lights, clean cook stoves and water filters, to people living in poverty.

On Monday, Emma visited Redlands and she was able to share her journey with our Yr 11 students. She shared many tips and advice, including her main piece of advice: to not be too careful when you are young and starting your career. While she had a strong promising position upon graduation from university, she took a chance moving to India and working with a non-profit agency. This experience changed her entire trajectory for her future. She urged all students to remain open-minded, to take big risks and to focus on their interests instead of just a particular job or title. She reminded our students that many jobs and positions will continue to change yet your interests will help guide you in a career path.

A special “thank you” to Dana Casimaty, Director of Development, and Kim Flatman, Alumni & Community Engagement Coordinator, for organising Emma’s visit and for allowing Yr 11 to be involved in her visit, her time answering questions from students and in her presentation of her award.

Additionally, “thank you” and a “job well done” to Yr 11 students, Josephine Bannon and Anabelle Cullen, for stepping up and preparing an introduction and conclusion for Emma’s presentation.

Workshop by Officer Lynda Hart

On Monday, Officer Lynda Hart, with over 40 years of experience with NSW Police, presented her workshop: Commissioners Anti-Violence and PLO, Social Media/Relationships/Driving. She shared real stories, some very vivid, of incidents and situations she had come across in her time working with young people. She covered a range of issues including social media, driver education, relationships, consent and safe partying.

At a time when many of our students have their Learner License and will soon move on to their Provisional License, she shared advice around remaining in charge when you are behind the wheel, always driving with a responsible adult, never driving when you or the responsible adult with you are intoxicated and ensuring all distractions (including the phone) are turned off and stored while driving. These are imperative rules to follow to avoid fines and/or penalties and ultimately, to stay safe.

Yr 11 HSC and IB Information Session

Students and parents packed the Hall on Wednesday night for the Yr 11 HSC and IB Information Session. Advice for Yr 11 in general was shared by Gemma Van de Peer and more specific information for each senior program was presented by Darren Taylor, Dean of IB, and Lucy Benjamin, Dean of HSC. A few key reminders from the evening include encouraging students to form strong relationships with their teachers, take ownership over their actions and study, get involved with many activities to keep more organised and motivated, aim to increase study toward 3 hours per night in Yr 12 and incorporate your “escape” in your study planner.

Thank you for your time in joining us this week for this important presentation and the reiteration of expectations as we encourage all students to step up and aim higher. We continue to revisit and reinforce this guidance through Pastoral Care and we appreciate your support of these messages at home as well. Please never hesitate to contact your son/daughter’s Tutor, Year Advisor, classroom teacher or Dean if your child or you have any concerns or further feedback on how we can best support this incredible group of young people toward graduation.

Congratulations Isaac Brooks!

Isaac has been an avid runner for as long as we can remember and he continues to beat school records, his personal bests and move his way up in competition. Isaac came 1st in the U18 Boys 1500m at the NSW Junior Championships, running a Personal Best and earning a national qualifier (4:01.61). Isaac also placed 2nd in the U18 Boys 800m, running 1:56.68.

His coach, Nick Walker, mentioned that in the 1500m, Isaac lead for the first 3 laps and in the last lap, got overtaken by 3 other runners, and managed to run them all down in the last 100m with a big kick – a really exciting race! Congratulations, Isaac and we wish you all the best at Nationals!

Isaacs 1500m final can be viewed here at 7:51.40.

Tomorrow Woman

On Thursday 23 February, Yr 10 Girls participated in the Tomorrow Woman Program aimed to reconnect female students with their authentic voice. Creating spaces free of judgement for our students to rise above the noise and see themselves for who they really are beyond the expectations and demands placed on them by society, their families, their schools, their workplaces, and their peers.

The world is changing; women are rising, and although some women feel more empowered than ever, we still have a way to go. The workshop aimed to reconnect female students with their authentic voice.

During the day, students unpacked things like gender stereotypes, internal and external pressures and pop culture topics like social media, beauty expectations, relationships, and self-talk.

In this changing landscape, students were asked the question, “Who is the woman I want to be tomorrow?”

Make a Splash for a Great Cause!

The Balmoral Swim Schools Relay Challenge is back! On Sunday 2 April from 8am-9am, local schools will come together to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute, increase awareness for this important cause, and most importantly, have fun participating in an open water swim relay.

Here’s how it works: each team consists of four swimmers, and each swimmer will swim a 200m leg of the relay. Participants can choose to swim in their year category or an older category, and the entry cost is just $20 per swimmer.

Don’t want to swim? No problem – you can still support the cause by donating to the Redlands fundraising page to help raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Institute.

This is a fantastic opportunity to come together, have some fun, and raise funds for a great cause. So, gather your teammates, come along to Balmoral Beach, and make a difference in the fight against childhood cancer.

We can’t wait to see everyone there! Register your team now and join in the fun!

Parent Resource – Friendship & Belonging

The ability to obtain, maintain and retain friendships is, according to all the childhood psychologists in the whole wide world, the greatest predictor of wellbeing. Having a rich repertoire of friends is a true indicator of whether your child is travelling ok.”

Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

Overview of this edition

It is not always easy for children and teenagers to always know how to manage friendships. Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop. For some these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people. For others, this can be much harder to navigate. Belonging to a group that is like-minded with similar interests is highly beneficial to a child’s wellbeing. Friendships are full of ups and downs and it is better for kids to learn how to manage and build their own friendships, even though as an adult carer you may be tempted to interfere.

PE Uniform Reminder

This is a reminder that the only day Yr 9 students should be dressed in their full PE uniform is Thursday (Secondary School Sport Day). Students should be getting changed into their full school uniform after all morning sport training, even if they have a PE practical lesson during the day. Students are encouraged to self-manage their uniform requirements – this includes knowing which days they need both uniforms, and taking charge of their washing. Please support your Yr 9 student in this endeavour – if you know this is challenging for them, create a shared ‘To-do’ list or set up reminders for the week ahead. We really value this strong support network for our young people so that they can succeed in the development of their organisational and self-management skills. We recognise that if these expectations are reinforced in partnership with the School, it helps to shape your young person’s positive interactions and attitude to all facets of life.

Camp

Students should be making their final preparations for camp over the coming days in anticipation for our week away at Yarrahapinni.

As suggested in last week’s Note Day, we have placed significant emphasis on students doing their own preparations, while also supporting them so that they know what this looks like, especially in terms of packing. The Redlands program builds year-on-year and is designed to increase student capacity to manage themselves outside of their regular comfort zone.

We recognise that each individual student thinks about camp in their own way and that challenges vary greatly, whether they be physical or emotional challenges. A key message to students this week has been that this is a safe environment for you to challenge yourself in and that your camp guide and teacher in charge are there to support you through these challenges. Students are encouraged to seek support from these individuals when needed.

If you need some support with the medical form process, you can contact medicals@oeg.edu.au and/or Mr Atkins eatkins@redlands.nsw.edu.au

If your child/ren require medications on camp, you will need to complete and return to Mr Atkins a Medical Authority Form located on Pulse HERE. This form will need to be completed prior to departure.

Permissions also need to be completed and you should have received an email from me if these also need to be completed via Pulse.

The equipment list has been provided below in case you have had difficulty accessing it.

Please contact Mr Atkins for any other questions about camp.

Back to School with Great Memories of Camp

After a wonderful week on camp at the beautiful High Country Campus, students returned back to the Senior Campus this week, getting involved in their lessons and back into the swing of Secondary School life. Home Learning has definitely started to become part of student lives now and students were encouraged in Tutor sessions to use their student planners effectively to plan ahead and ‘chunk down’ any major tasks they might receive.

Parents were also getting into the swing of things, attending a lovely ‘Meet and Greet’ evening on Monday night. Teachers, Tutors and Year Advisors alike had an enjoyable time meeting and sharing a story or two with the parents of our new Yr 7 cohort.

A reminder that all assessment task notifications, containing key details of what is required for each assessment and when each task component is due, are uploaded onto the assessment tab on the Yr 7 Core Page, which is accessible to students and parents alike through iLearn. Currently, Yr 7 have a Christian Studies assessment due in Week 6 (between 8/3-13/3 depending on Core class) and an English assessment due in Week 7 (16/3).

This week students had their first Year assembly, as we have missed each one due to various events so far! Mr Gray, Dean of Activities visited the event and praised Yr 7 on their exceptional performance over camp. In his words, it was up there with the best camps he has experienced in his time at Redlands. Well done Yr 7! Mr Gray also reminded students of all the activities and clubs they can be part of at Redlands and direct them to look at the Cocurricular Page on Pulse, which lists all the relevant details of each club.

Students enjoyed watching a photo montage of their week away on camp, reminding them of the challenges they overcame and the joy they experienced together. I also connected their experience on camp to our Redlands values, identifying how they had demonstrated these values throughout their week on camp, and encouraging them to continue embodying them through all their time at school. The core values are: honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion, fairness, and moral courage.

Visiting Speaker – Emma Colenbrander (Redlander, Class of 2006)

On Monday, we were thrilled to welcome Emma Colenbrander (Redlander, Class of 2006) to back to speak to our Yr 5 students about her experience working in environmental conservation.

Last year, Emma was one of the School’s inaugural Redlander Alumni Awards winners but was unable to attend the ceremony in person last year as she currently lives in the UK. Hence, it was a joy for the School to present her award in person as well.

Emma is a social entrepreneur, intrapreneur and international development professional. She is founder and Head of the Global Distributors Collective, an alliance over 200 companies around the world that distribute beneficial products, such as solar lights, clean cook stoves and water filters, to people living in poverty. Prior to that, Emma co-founded and was an Executive Director at Pollinate Group, a social business that brings clean energy solutions to urban slums in India. With a mission statement focused on improving the lives of India’s urban poor, Pollinate Group has reached 735,000 people to date and has received numerous awards including the UN Momentum for Change Award and the Australian Social Enterprise ‘One to Watch’ Award.

Emma’s visit was part of the students’ work entitled, Our Fragile Environment, which focuses on the importance of protecting our planet and the impact of our actions. The students were highly engaged and enthusiastic throughout the presentation, and they had the opportunity to ask questions and learn from a real-life expert in the field. It was a fantastic learning experience, and we are grateful to our alumni for sharing their knowledge with us.

Emma felt very honoured to be invited back to speak to students and was blown away with all the developments that have taken place, not just in facilities, but in teaching and learning, which she saw and was part of this week.

Our counselling team were delighted to extend a warm welcome to many of our Junior Campus families who joined our first parent seminar of 2023. The session focused on Sleep and Healthy Routines and the presentation slides have been uploaded to the Junior School Pulse page for parent reference.

2023 Mosman Youth Awards in Literature

View Flyer

The Mosman Youth Awards in Literature competition, organised by Mosman Library Service and sponsored by local organisations, has been developed to encourage students to write their own original stories or poems on their chosen topics.

Over many years, Redlands students have enjoyed participation and success in this annual literary challenge, a competition in prose and poetry writing.

Now in its 31st year, I share this year’s details for parents and students to consider and class teachers will also encouraging student involvement with this literary opportunity ahead of the closing date of 31 May. Please note that entry forms must be signed by a parent or guardian and not a teacher if the entrant is under 18 years of age.

For an entry form or more information, please click here or call Barry O’Keefe Library in Mosman on 9978 4091.

No Playing on Equipment After School

Please can I remind all parents that as per the clear signage, the various play equipment and oval are out of bounds for students after school, unless in a supervised activity with Redlands staff such as our After School Care program or one of our Sports offerings.

We have had concerns raised of students playing on the equipment or running around the campus unsupervised whilst parents are chatting and there has also been challenges distinguishing between these students and those registered for our After School Care program. Thank you for your immediate attention and I will also remind students about this in our next assembly.

The Importance of Sleep

On Wednesday we welcomed K-6 parents and carers to the Arnold Library to hear our School Counsellors discuss the importance of sleep for children. They shared tricks and tips to help families establish a calm and structured bedtime routine that encourage a deep sleep for their child.

One tip was for families to consider how many cocurricular activities that their children participate in during afternoons. With so many options for after-school activities available at school and in the community, I do worry at times that some Prep aged children can become over scheduled. The cycle of tiredness, late mealtime and disrupted and abrupt bedtimes can really impact on a calm bedtime routine, and it can also mean a young child at the end of a school day has no free time to just play. I am always happy to talk further with any parent about this before signing up a prep student to an activity.

The presentation slides containing information and shared resources can be found on the Preparatory School Pulse page. The school counsellors are also available for a further conversation.

OOSH News

OOSH Late Pick Up Notice

Parents and carers are reminded that children are to be picked up by 6pm sharp from OOSH. Unfortunately, some children are not getting picked up until 6.15pm and in some cases even later. This is unacceptable and unfair for our OOSH staff who have their own families and activities to go to at 6pm.

If you are running late to pick up your child, please call OOSH by 5.45pm to inform the staff. For families who consistently arrive late to pick up their children, OOSH registration for your child will be cancelled, and the child’s spot given to a family on the wait list.

OOSH Autumn Vacation Care

Our K-6 Vacation Care program will be available from 6/3 to all families to book via HubHello. Parents will be able to download the weekly activities and book their children on the days they would like to attend.

Our Autumn Holidays will focus on cultural experiences from different countries and backgrounds and families are welcome to join some activities with us. More information comings soon!

Playground and Allister Street Safety Concerns

Parents and carers are not to park across the Prep School driveway at any time during or after school hours. Staff and other drivers with a disability who use the underground carpark have been unable to leave on occasions this term. Please be considerate of our staff and of the parking rules on Allister Street.

The playground equipment in the Prep and Junior School playgrounds are not to be used after school hours please by Redlands students unless they are registered with OOSH.

Can I also reiterate again, that for safety and security reasons, the Prep Reception Area is not to be used for picking up and exiting in the afternoons for OOSH. The Prep Reception is closed from 4pm. Please park on Allister Street outside the Junior School entrance and enter and exit via the Reception door please.

Nyumbar is a family owned and run Aboriginal Cultural Education business based in Sydney. Deslyn and Isaac shared artifacts and tools that Aboriginal people used in previous times such as boomerangs, coolamon, kangaroo and possum skins. The children were taught about talking sticks and the symbols used to make meaning. We painted our own talking sticks and used the picture symbols to tell our own story. It is important to be able to share in authentic Aboriginal culture that is age appropriate for our children. These experiences help us to build an understanding of this rich culture and share in a future of cultural mutual respect and celebration.

International Day

Tuesday 4 April

International Day is one of the most important days here at Redlands. We are a school of many nationalities and cultures so let’s celebrate that this year without any restrictions.

This year we would like to ask you, our international community to help us organise a wonderful day full of activities, food, talks, music, and any other fun activities that you would like to share.

If you are a parent who identifies with another culture, we would love you to join us on 4 April, between 9am and 10am to share aspects of your culture with us.  Please email me directly or catch me in the hallway to let me know if you are interested in coming along.

Secondary Sport

Another value in which it should be lived throughout sport is ‘Fun’. Having enjoyment of sport leads to greater motivation, engagement and overall quality of the experience. By creating and maintaining safe, supporting and fun environments allows students to gain personal satisfaction from improvement and growth. We encourage students to empower others to embrace successes and celebrate them accordingly.

Last weekend saw the final round of the ISA Summer Season for Basketball and Touch Football. We have a number of teams across both sports who have progressed straight through to their respective Grand Finals, with a number of teams playing this weekend. All students (and parents/carers) should take the time to see where they are playing and their games times, and allow for adequate travel time, players need to be at their fixture 30 minutes prior to their game starting (if your game starts at 10:00am you need to be at the courts/fields by 9:30am).

Wednesday 8 March is International Women’s Day, with this year’s theme ‘embracing equity’, I was contacted during the week by Grace Durrant (Yr 11) who has a huge passion for Sport, in particular the challenges that face many young women. On Wednesday at lunchtime we will be opening up Redlands Hall for all students to come and participate in a Q&A with a number of elite athletes of the Redlands community, to discuss and breakdown barriers and concepts of what a ‘male’ and ‘female’ sport is. We have a number of past, present and future elite female athletes on the panel, and are encouraging all students to come with some questions they might have. The panel includes (with a few other athletes to be announced):’

  • Redlands Director of Coaching: Basketball – Renae Camino
    • 2x WNBL Champion (07/08 & 12/13)
    • WNBL Grand Final MVP (2008)
    • FIBA Oceania Womens Championship (2007)
    • AIS Junior Athlete of the Year (2006)
    • WNBL Rookie of the Year (2005)
  • GWS Giants Netball – Training Partner – Jemma Donoghue
    • Suncorp Super Netball Debut – 2022
    • Australian U21 Netball – 2022
  • NSW Waratah (15s &7s) & Wallaroos – Tatum Bird

Basketball

“Fab 5” Boys – Round 10

Max Keith: Great bounce back game. In the words of Eminem: He had one shot, one opportunity, and he swished the game winner! Will shout out the whole team for stepping up – battled the whole way through and stayed composed. Great effort!

Andreas Kokkinis: Always stays ready and locked in. Stepped into shots with confidence and hit some big 3s. Great contribution on the defensive end, communicating well and stepping in front from help positions.

James Pocknee: In the 4th quarter he took it upon himself to check their best player, and follow the scout perfectly. He came up clutch with a massive 3 point bomb when we needed it most .

Oliver Soderberg: He is an absolute superstar for us. But today he truly proved how good he is, 25 points scored in a variety of ways. But also incredible defensively and being a great teammate. He has improved out of sight across the last two years.

Kane Thompson: He will put his body on the line every time. I feel like a lot of other kids could learn a lot from watching him play as he can have a big impact when he’s in the game. He is one of those players every coach wants on a team that just goes out and plays his heart out diving, hustling and making winning plays. He defensive efforts enabled us to win the game and finish the season on a high.

“Fab 5” Girls – Round 10:

Emilie Bessell: Another dominant performance from our Girls Basketball Captain at both ends of the floor. Finishing with a massive 44 points in her last home game for Redlands. Fitting performance considering Emilie has been on the firsts since Year 7, great way to go out.

Sophia Rayson: The game was incredibly rough, but Sophia was a stable and strong player throughout the whole game, matching up with one of the tallest players because she dropped back and was the first person to defend in the key.

Alex Fitzpatrick: With only 5 this weekend, all the girls fought hard, but Alex particularly played a massive part in the win. She was great on help defence and in the paint for rebounds, and one of the most confident and consistent in putting the ball on the floor and creating opportunities. It’s been such a joy watching her confidence and skills grow over the season!

Nicole Steffan: Nicole stayed composed when SACS went on their big run and contributed both offensively and defensively by intercepting a few of their passes which lead us to a 10 point win (first win for the season!!) and being a trooper for playing all 40 mins of the game with no complaints.

Grace Dawson-Damer: Put in great effort at both ends of the court and was really focused and on the ball. Picked up plays well and was instrumental in some great traps and turnovers.

Coach of the Week

We have been so incredibly lucky with how amazing our coaches are across the program. But to round out the Fab 5s for the season our coach of the week goes to Ms Seebohm. Week in week out she does such a fantastic job with the First Girls. This has now amounted to year in year out. A massive shout out to her for going four consecutive years undefeated in the regular season. This is a huge accomplishment and shows how hard she works and how much effort goes into preparing and helping these girls get better and better.

The Friends of Basketball are delighted to invite Redlands Basketballers in Years 8-12, their parents and coaches to a dinner to celebrate the end of the Basketball season and the achievements of our players this year. This engaging evening will include dinner, speeches, awards and trivia and will be a great way to close our season. We plan for the event to finish by 9.15pm. Tickets $60 pp. Sales close Sunday 5 March.

Fitness Centre

We have had a wonderful start to the year in the Redlands Fitness Centre with great numbers across all sessions in the first week. Led by our brand new Year 7s, we have had a variety of circuit based training sessions blended alongside our individual sessions for our more senior athletes. I could not be more excited by what is to come within this space in the coming weeks and as we lead into the finals for our Summer Rep Sport.

For all students using the Fitness Centre space please continue to be aware of the following changes to the use of the Redlands Fitness Centre. Students are not able to leave school grounds at the conclusion of their sessions. Students are required to change back into their school uniforms and prepare for 1st Period. To assist with this transition, the Fitness Centre will now be open from 6:30am – 7:45am with students able to join throughout the morning.

The Fitness Centre is the perfect space for students to build strength, speed and flexibility, key components of all Rep. Sports at Redlands. Our aim at the Fitness Centre is to create an open and inclusive space for all Redlands athletes and for all students to start their day off on a great note.

Sessions start promptly at 6:30am and have sessions tailored towards athletes of any ability, size, or skill.

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions or the Fitness Centre space as a whole.

Keep an eye out for our Trainer of the Week which will be announced in Note Day. Our Week 1 and Week 2 winners will be announced next week.

Sailing

We have had some good sessions leading into the regattas season, unfortunately we did not get an entry into the Pittwater regatta, but we do have entries into the NSW State Championships. We will be announcing the teams shortly. Redlands this week was able to spend lots of time on the water. We were able to achieve 4 races for the Redlands series, despite the light and shifty winds in the morning making the racing very difficult. With two weeks before the NSW Secondary Schools Teams Racing Championship, the Pacers have been focusing on starts and ramping up their training for the event.  Thank you for all the parents helping with volunteering over the weekend, we will need some parents to help during the NSW State Champions on Friday, March 17, Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19.

Tennis

With only two more weeks of the Summer Tennis before the end of the season, we encourage all students to have fun, continue to improve their skills in training and bring their best to their last two rounds of competition – especially the graduating seniors in their last season of sport.

Winter Sport changeover will occur in Week 7 so please make sure you have/your child has signed up for a Winter Sport. Winter Tennis will commence in Week 7 with training and trials for competition for the rest of this term and competition starting in Term 2. We hope to see you all for the Winter season if not next Summer!

Please note that TNB players will continue to compete beyond Week 6 up until 1 April Week 8 (assuming they make the semi-finals and finals) regardless of what Winter sport they choose. Redlands presents THE ADDAMS FAMILY, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story and is every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Sport for Jove Workshops – Yr 10 Drama Curriculum

Our Yr 10 Drama students have enjoyed working with the theatre company, Sport for Jove over the past few weeks, exploring performing Shakespeare through the characters, scenes and language. These practical workshops, led by Sport For Jove have covered a variety of performance skills and were specifically tailored to our students’ needs for their upcoming Shakespeare performance assessment. We are looking at seeing the students finished performances shortly inspired by these workshops.

Music

Thank you to all our new ‘Friends of Music’ for joining the buzz at our 2023 launch meeting last Thursday evening! It’s been another busy week in Music with all ensembles in full swing; Rock Bands & Unplugged artists are preparing auditions for Battle of the Bands; and all the ensembles of the Jazz Program winding up to perform at the Autumn Fair in a few weeks’ time.  It was also a joy to see and hear from some of our Alumni from 2022 providing our background Jazz at the Twilight Drinks. How proud we are to see the journey through to (and beyond) the finish line!

This week we also officially welcomed Dr Jeremy Eskenazi to our team, commencing on Tuesday as our Resident Associate Artist. Great things are in store in this space, in support of student performance attainment and growth as young music-makers.

Please see various notes below from our Heads of Ensembles & Administrators about happenings across CURRICULAR, COCURRICULAR & EXTRACURRICULAR streams in the week to come.

Stay wonderful & reach out to the Music Office if you have any queries.

Director of Music P-12

JUNIOR CAMPUS CURRICULAR MUSIC

Focus on Transition Gold!

This week in Music, Transition Gold has been letting their light shine with their performance in Prep Assembly of the song Taba Naba from the Torres Strait Islands. In music lessons this week, they also learnt the song Clapping Game – I Let Her Go from Trinidad/Tobago.

Here the students enjoyed clapping on the word ‘Go’ and dancing with their partner but on the last ‘Go’ they had to turn to their new partner. Well done Transition Gold for your great learning and performance this week. Keep shining!

A reminder that we are hosting an information session for Prep parents in our community to learn more about the music happenings on the Junior Campus in two weeks’ time. We warmly invite you to the session on Thursday 16 March 8.30am in the Prep Music Room (Level 2 – above Prep Reception).

Attendance & Pockets

Thank you to those who have learnt and applied the courtesy of notifying your teachers should you look to be absent from a forthcoming rehearsal commitment. It helps your ensemble work around your absence, and means you can be kept in the loop if there is anything you need to catch up on.

As attendance before and after school is a matter of duty of care, a reminder that if you are unable to attend an ensemble due to illness or some other unavoidable circumstance, parents/care givers need to email juniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au or seniormusic@redlands.nsw.edu.au respectively to communicate this.

Merits, Blazer Pockets, Colours & Half-Colours are awarded later in the year, and these require 80% as a minimum attendance bar.
