National Science Week

The Redlands Science Department is celebrating National Science Week in Week 4 with a range of activates on offer to inspire curiosity and learning in students. Yr 10 Students will be involved in:

Tutor Time Trivia Quiz: How much does each Tutor Group know about the moon landing and exploration of space? Prizes on offer. 

Breakfast with a Scientist on Wednesday 14 August 7.45-10.10am (light breakfast provided). We have eight parent scientists (Weather Derivatives, Health Economist, Mathematician, Environmental Scientist, Pharmacist, Patent Attorney, Chiropractor and General Practitioner) come to talk to you about their career, what it involves, the interesting bits, the challenges and how they got there.  You will then have the opportunity to talk to the scientists and ask them questions. All you have to do is sign up using your Redlands Google account, follow this link. You MUST sign up to be put onto the event and the sign-up closes on Monday 12 August at 10.00am.

Thursday 15 August in Science lessons

DNA, genes and genetic disorders:  What is genomic sequencing and how is it used for rare disorders; How are Scientists using exciting new genetic technologies like CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing?; Can we and should we manipulate the human genome?.

Science Fun in the Quad

Experience the wonder and magic of Science with fun hands-on experiments and amazing demonstrations; from egg drops and spinning cups full of water to optical illusions and giant elephant toothpaste. Join in Science Fun in the Quad at lunchtime on Tuesday 14 August during National Science Week.

Paper Plane Competition

Friday 13 August at lunchtime in Redlands Hall

Do you have what it takes to soar with the best? Can you throw a paper plane 20 metres or keep it aloft for 6 seconds? Planes must be made of one sheet of standard A4 paper with no cuts or additions. There are prizes for the best in each class so get practising (but not in class!).

Student Achievements

On Friday Emma Mahon competed at the prestigious NSW All Schools Cross Country at Eastern Creek Raceway. Emma finished in 5th place in the 16 Years Girls 4k and has qualified to compete at the Australian Cross Country Championships which will be held on 24 August. Congratulations to Emma on this exceptional result and we wish her all the best at Nationals.

University and Careers Visits

On Wednesday New York University visited Redlands to talk with students about courses offered. Two Redlands alumni who are currently studying at The University of the Arts London and Parsons New York also shared their recent experiences with students.
