Issue 22 2019 - 01 Aug 2019

From the Principal

It is a very brief Note Day report from me this week as we settle into the second week of term.

Our Year 12 students commence their HSC and IB trial examinations next week and I wish them all the very best in these examinations. During the past two weeks, a number of Showcase events have seen our Year 12 Drama and Theatre students performing their ensemble works and our Dance students performing their self-choreographed works in front of appreciative audiences.

I wish to congratulate Zac West, Year 12, who placed 2nd in the Men’s Division of the 2019 Laser Sailing World Championships in Japan over the school holidays. What a wonderful achievement!

This afternoon I am very much looking forward to attending the Junior Music Festival in Dunnet Hall. I hear our young musicians have been working hard, practising their Year Group and Ensemble performances and I have no doubt that their love of music will radiate from the stage.

Finally, the Redlands Gala Ball on Saturday 16 August is certain to be a wonderful evening of entertainment. There are only handful of tickets remaining and they can be purchased here.

Parent Presentation: Technology Addiction and Sleep (Wednesday 14 August)

Good sleep is crucial to health and wellbeing. The use of digital devices, especially before bedtime, can have a major impact on sleep quality. Child psychiatrist Dr Philip Tam and sleep expert Lisa Maltman will discuss how to help your child create good sleep habits and avoid the pitfalls of too much technology. Dr Philip Tam is an award-winning child psychiatrist, researcher and pioneer in internet-related psychological disorders and video-game addictions. He will examine how to address these often-challenging problems in young people. Lisa Maltman is the founder of The Sleep Connection, established to meet the growing need to educate students, teachers and parents in schools on the importance of sleep health, and works closely with the Woolcock Medical Institute in Sydney, a body world-renowned in the area of sleep research. We are pleased to have Dr Philip Tam and Lisa Maltman present on these important topics on Wednesday 14 August from 6.00-7.30pm in Redlands Hall. All Secondary School parents are invited to attend. No RSVP is necessary.

Reflective Learners

Last night we held the Yr 7 Parent Teacher Night in Lang Gym. As I said to many parents over the course of the evening, personally I really enjoy this night as it gives me an opportunity to wear my English teacher hat and speak to students and parents from my English class. All Yr 7 students should be proud of their efforts over Semester 1 and their successful transition into the Secondary School. As this Parent Teacher Night followed their reports from the end of last term, it is natural for some Yr 7 students to overly worry about their academic results. And while students often get caught up in grades and marks, numbers and percentages, and see these as an end point, I remind students in my class that the most important accomplishment they should strive for in these first few years of their schooling is to Learn How You Learn and Learn About Your Learning. I believe that it is this focus on critical and honest self-reflection (a skill which can be challenging to develop in adolescents) which will best prepare them for their later years of schooling and assist them in being self-directed learners. Therefore, I would encourage all students to ‘look beyond the grade’ and think about the strategies and approaches which help them learn best for years to come.

Winter Sports Update

This past Saturday I was out at Macquarie University watching many of our Football and Rugby teams in action. I always enjoy getting around the sidelines on a Saturday and seeing our students participate in sports. This weekend I was struck by the sense of fun and camaraderie of our Girls 2nd XI Football team, the fierce determination of our 14As Boys Football team (who won an exciting 1-0 match against one of the top teams despite only having 10 fit players) and the spirit and sportsmanship displayed by the 13A Rugby team in an exciting match that went right down to the wire. However, this weekend I was most impressed by the character shown by our Boys 1st XI Football team. Despite being down 2-0 at halftime against the top team in the competition, they were not discouraged nor disheartened, but instead dug deep in the second half to gain the ascendency and score two goals to level the contest in an exciting match. I wish them and all winter sports teams all the best as they build to the conclusion of the winter sports season and (hopefully) finals action to come.

Congratulations

I would like to make special mention of Zac West (Yr 12). Towards the end of the holidays Zac competed in the 2019 Laser Sailing World Championships in Japan. Competing in the Men’s Division, Zac finished 2nd overall winning the silver medal in an outstanding result. Congratulations, Zac!

Congratulations also to Emma Mahon (Yr 10), Olivia Vigneault (Yr 9) and Isaac Brooks (Yr 7) who represented Redlands and the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships last Thursday. Pitted against the top 100 runners across the state from their respective age groups, Isaac finished 35th, Olivia finished 33rd and Emma finished 5th, a result which qualifies her for the Australian Cross Country Championships later this month. Congratulations to all three runners and a special thank you to Mr Nick Walker for his tireless dedication to the Cross Country program throughout the season.

Chaplain

Conviction and the courage to stand and declare that conviction is an exciting thing to see in young people. Two of our students recently, after careful consideration, decided that they were convicted that Jesus is Lord and that they would commit to following him. Sophia Justice (Yr 10) and Sarah Kumpulainen (Yr 8) stood before a packed church to make this commitment public. They were confirmed by the Bishop Chris Edwards on Sunday.

Each stood and explained what Jesus meant to them.

Sophia said “He is the foundation of my life, he is my saviour, my hope and my joy.” She has clearly recognised that Jesus is more than a trimming to life but rather the centre and foundation of all her decisions.

Sarah responded, “Jesus is a brightly shining light, He is the clear illustration of God’s grace and the ultimate fulfillment of loving sacrifice. Jesus is the way the truth and the life. Jesus gives hope and persuades growth in my life.” She has eloquently captured the heart of the gospel that rests entirely on the Jesus and his sacrifice to pay the penalty of sin. She also reminds us that life is not static and that faith is a growing thing.

We encourage our students to reflect on life, seek answers to the difficult questions of life, investigate the claims of Jesus and the evidence that supports those claims. These young women have done this and have concluded that Jesus is real. They have set the course of their life and have joined the millions across the world who know Jesus as Lord and Saviour and are his family.

Congratulations Sophia and Sarah.

Parents Who Pray

A small, but dedicated, group of parents gather to pray for our school community, teachers, executive and students. If you are interested in joining us, our next meeting is on Wednesday 14 August in B.1.1 beginning at 8.30am and finishing by 9.15am.

A Night to Delight

Science

Science Week (Week 4: 12-16 August)

The school theme of 2019 National Science Week is Destination Moon: more missions, more science. It focuses on:

  • how the combination of scientists, engineers, chemists, designers, mathematicians, flight directors, software experts, aerospace technicians and the technologies they used made the NASA Apollo 11 mission a success 50 years ago;
  • the space technologies and designs that have made more missions into space possible;
  • the space industry capabilities being envisioned and prototyped today, that inevitably will fulfil ambitions of returning to the Moon and other destinations in our solar system.

Since then, more sophisticated space satellites, probes, orbiters, landers and rovers have been designed, programmed and launched into space to track, detect and make observations, collect data and expand our knowledge and understanding of space.

These epic phases of space science, space technology and innovation have in the 21st century, enabled a dynamic era of space science, space technology, and innovation to evolve, one in which a new generation of space instruments and satellite capabilities have been informed by quantum technologies, big data, optical research and data science.

A number of activities will be happening to inspire curiosity and learning in students including:

Winter School

It’s been a great start to the season at Winter School for 2019. Everyone arrived on Saturday afternoon and from that moment on, it’s been all go for the 2019 intake, moving into a new environment and what’s now home for the next nine weeks.

From trying to put all their clothes neatly away to the setting up a 40 minute play list for the daily bus trip to Thredbo, there’s been a range of new and interesting challenges for everyone. Often the most confronting and stark change to everyone’s regular routine is the realisation that it’s their responsibility to setup and clean up after each meal.

Yet despite this somewhat new challenge for many, some students have taken to it with great enthusiasm and were overhead saying whilst on duty:

Mop where no man has mopped before. One small squeeze for man one giant mop for mankind” – Sophia Maxwell

It’s been great to see how quickly everyone has settled in and hear about their first few days at Winter School.

“Meeting new people and the food is really good” – Julia Saunders
“The ski instructors are really good, very nice, encouraging and educational” – Olivia Vigneault
“Delicious food, lovely teachers, great community” – Lara Stanbridge
“The skiing is sick, food is great and everyone’s super nice” – Alex Ridler
“It’s a great experience and the skiing is super fun” – Kai Heath

With 21 students learning guitar, any guitar donations would be much appreciated.

Any staff or student deliveries for Winter School can be sent to PO Box 91 Jindabyne 2627.

The first weekend is also rapidly approaching, everyone’s looking forward to the chance to get checked off by their ski and snowboard instructors so they can free-ride with their friends for the first time. It’s been a very busy, but great first week at Winter School for 2019.

Peru Trip

During the last holidays students from Yr 11 took part in an expedition to Peru. As this was a student led expedition, they had to work together to book accommodation, transportation and come to an agreement on what they were going to be eating for dinner each night. In doing so, as individuals and young adults, they each gained a number of practical skills and tools that are going to aid them moving forward into their academic studies and additionally the real world: skills such as communication, collaboration, patience, trust, responsibility, flexibility, as well as a new-found awareness of a unique culture. Some of the key components of their experience was the trek and service project. In the first week of the trip, students spent four days hiking, on the third day reaching above 5000 metres. This in itself was a challenge for the students but also extremely rewarding. Every student and teacher in the group managed to reach the summit through sheer determination as well as encouragement by all involved. Living on the highest navigable lake in the world on the island of Ticonata, students were given the chance to try on traditional clothes, eat cultural food and interact with the local people. Using the money students raised, they bought several mattresses, a toilet, cooking supplies and the resources to help build a mud brick house on their homestay island.

Mock Trial

The Yr 11 Mock Trial team had an excellent win this week in the first elimination round of the NSW Law Society Mock Trial competition. This was the 5th round and the team remain undefeated, which is commendable and means they now progress to the last remaining 32 schools in NSW. This week the competition was against Shore School, who always present a strong team in this competition. It was a hard-fought criminal trial involving an alleged dating scam where the victim (Leilani Heath) had been defrauded out of $38,000 by a man claiming to love her. The police officer (Maddi Howard) presented evidence of her investigation into the offence. Barristers (Renata Ferreira and Ali Lawrence) expertly cross examined the defendant and his friend, and they were professionally instructed by their solicitor (Emily Colvin). The Magistrate was efficiently assisted by the Magistrate’s Clerk (Stephanie Larcos). All of the team performed magnificently, but of particular mention by the Magistrate was how impressed he had been with Renata Ferreira’s cross examination of the defendant. Next round the team are the plaintiff in a civil case against Montgrove College.

Interesting Article of the Week

Please watch

This week I have attached a link to a Ted Talk by Shauna Shapiro, PhD, who is a Professor at Santa Clara University, a Clinical Psychologist, and an internationally recognised expert in mindfulness. Mindfulness is a habit that can help all of us deal with the stresses of life. It is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we are doing, and not be overly reactive or overwhelmed by what is going on around us.

Athletics

Congratulations to Olivia Vigneault who participated last week in the NSW All Schools Cross Country competition. Olivia performed admirably and finished in 33rd place in the 15 Years Girls 4kms.

Pastoral Care Program

This term the focus is on students learning to balance work and school. We are beginning with some resources produced by DARTA (Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia), starting by looking at perceived norms and if the students’ perceptions reflect the majority of Australians of their age. In particular the topic of alcohol use has been discussed and strategies to look after themselves and each other at social occasions.

Social Awareness Program

Students this term are learning about refugees and the inequality that they suffer as a result of their unfortunate circumstances. The first couple of weeks they are beginning to understand what a refugee, asylum seeker and displaced person is and why they face a high level of inequality.

Anonymous Posting Apps

This week I emailed parents regarding anonymous posting apps and concerns arising for the use of such applications. It appears that the use of such apps has again arisen with Saraha being replaced by apps such as Tellonym: Honest Q&A Feedback, YOLO, TextSpy etc. There are numerous concerns surrounding the use of such apps which I outlined in my email communication this week. The Pastoral team will be speaking with students at our next year meeting and linking our discussion with content covered in our Term 2 Cyber Safety Pastoral program. In addition to resources included in my email, ReachOut Parents also provides information, tips, hints and articles you may find useful. Thank you for your support as we guide our students/children in making positive choices.

Year 7

This Week

Thank you all for a wonderful Parent Teacher Night this week. There was a buzz across the Year Group with exciting chatter and some nerves prior to the evening.  It is a supportive reminder for students to hear first-hand from their teachers, in front of their parents, that this is a partnership and we are all here to support them in their learning.  Please contact a teacher directly for any additional feedback or if you were not able to meet with a specific teacher this week.

Isaac Brooks finished in 35th place in the 13 Years Boys 3km at the All Schools Cross Country. The competition was a great learning venture for Isaac with the high standard of competition from ISA through to State. For Isaac to finish in the top 40 is an exceptional result, as mentioned by Coach Nick Walker. He is pictured below after his race with Emma Mahon (Yr 10), an avid runner and mentor for Isaac, and during his race.

A large handful of Yr 12 role models have started an initiative to touch base with the Yr 7 cohort on a couple of occasions prior to graduation. They wanted to reflect on their own experience through school and share their knowledge, challenges, learnings and more with a few guided questions and others taken from the Yr 7 cohort.  Each House had a chance to speak with 2-3 Yr 12 students and after a short warm up, the questions came rolling in. This was a wonderful first round of Q&A. Yr 12 plans to visit with Yr 7 at least once more after their Trial Examinations. We thank them for their time and wish them luck in Trials!

UPCOMING EVENTS

Please note that all Upcoming Events for the Junior School are now on their own Note Day article/page.

This Head of Junior School page will consist of general information from the Head of Junior School.

Car Line Reminder

Please can I remind Junior School parents who use the car line to arrive as close to 3.20pm as possible and no earlier than 3.15pm. Prior to this time, we have Prep Car Line in operation, the flow of which is being impeded by Junior School parents arriving early, some from 2.45pm. With students not out of class until 3.20pm, coming slightly later is also often more efficient.

Making Responsible Digital Choices

Following on from my message to all of the students in our first assembly of the term about their responsibility in making good choices, both at school and outside of our walls, this week we welcomed back Brett Lee from Internet Safe Education in Queensland to speak to Yrs 5 and 6 about making clever responsible choices.

With 22 years’ experience in the Australian Police, sixteen of those as a detective, Brett’s real-life experience in this field as well as time he spent in the US working with the FBI on aspects of internet security, safety and crime, gives him great credence to talk on this important topic and it was affirming to hear him reiterate much of what is contained in our own School ICT Responsible User Guidelines.

Below are some of Brett’s key takeaway points below for your reference as well and I would encourage parents of Yrs 5 and 6 to have a conversation with your child to gauge the messages that they took away from the session.

  • The Internet is public and permanent; once you post something, you cannot take it back.
  • Think before you post. If someone can see what you post, they can also share it with others.
  • Protect your personal information and make sure you use privacy settings correctly. Get into the habit of setting up your privacy settings as this protects your identity and helps you take control of your personal information.
  • People you meet on the internet are strangers. The decisions we make in the real world apply online, eg. would you give your address to a stranger if they walked up to you on the street?
  • If we feel upset online, get off the Internet and tell a trusted adult about it.
  • Rules and responsibilities online are real and we have federal cyber bullying laws.
  • Treat people with respect, both face-to-face and online. Make mature choices to not get involved in bullying, menacing or harassment online, just as we do in the real world.
  • Be a true reflection of yourself online. Just because we are on the Internet does not mean that we can change our values, beliefs and behaviours.

Of related interest, the latest research from the eSafety Commissioner focuses on parents’ experiences raising children in an online world. It provides insight into how parents assess and react to their children’s experiences and the information they find most useful in guiding children through their experiences online. Data in this report is drawn from a random sample of 3,520 parents in Australia of children aged 2–17 and its key findings were:

  • That both parents’ concerns about their child being online and their additional information requirements revolve around the need to maintain privacy — as well as the need to protect them from unwanted approaches from strangers.
  • Parenting approaches and attitudes vary, based on the age of the child in their care. Parents with an older child are more likely to favour a more open parenting style while parents with a younger child are more restrictive.
  • Parents display a general lack of confidence about having to deal with their child’s negative online experiences.
  • Despite its perceived importance, parents are not proactive when it comes to seeking and receiving online safety information.

We will continue to educate, remind and reinforce these messages here at school and also continue our random checks of student iPads as per clause 2.1 of the ICT Student Responsible Use Guidelines.

The Arnold Library has purchased five copies of Mr Lee’s parent reference book, Screen Resolution, should parents wish to borrow a copy from our parent reference section.

Yr 3 Gallery Walk

It was lovely to join Yr 3 families in spending time in the classrooms this week as part of a learning celebration. Earlier in the week, Mr Carter emailed information to Yr 2 families advising them of the Junior School Athletics Carnival which will take place on Wednesday 7 August at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre, Homebush. This is an opportunity for all Yr 2 students who turn eight in 2019 to participate. The day itself is a full Athletics Carnival comprising track and field events including 100m, 200m, 800m races and shot put, discus and turbo javelin as well as long and high jump. Students are able to enter as many or as few events as they choose and there is no pre-registration required. All students receive House points for participating in events and students who place in the top positions are awarded additional points, place ribbons and may be selected to represent Redlands at the HICES Athletics Carnival. As this is a Junior School event, parents of Prep students are asked to transport their child to and from the venue and supervise them for the duration of the day. Students should be at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay by 8.20am. If you are interested in this opportunity please email juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au and also inform your Yr 2 class teacher via a note in the Student Planner.

If you arrive earlier than these times, please do not park in the Car Line area as this must be kept clear for cars who are coming into the underground collection zone. If you are approached by a staff member, we ask that you please adhere to requests and be respectful in your interactions. There will be teachers on duty from 2.45pm daily to assist with the Prep Car Line process and to keep all members of the community safe.

Anxious Kids Seminar – Michael Grose and Dr Jodi Richardson

Today, we see more and more children affected by anxiety to the point of it impacting on their happiness and quality of life. Although anxiety can be a major problem, it doesn’t have to be a lifelong struggle. Award-winning parenting speaker Michael Grose and wellbeing expert Dr Richardson’s highly-acclaimed book Anxious Kids: How children can turn their anxiety into resilience has led to a wave of positive feedback from parents. As a result, they will be hosting seminars across Australia and New Zealand to present their evidence-based approach to managing kids’ anxiety. If you are unable to attend the seminars, there are courses offered held over six sessions. They feature leading authorities from around the world, offering a range of tools to help manage and respond to anxiety, both in the moment and over the long term. The course focuses on mindfulness and breathing, and also features strategies for lifestyle changes, from nutrition to screen time, which parents often discuss with me.

School Readiness

As we enter Semester 2, many families are beginning to think about the following year and considering if their child is “school ready”. This topic is frequently debated in educational settings all over Australia: Should you hold your child back a year and allow them to enter school at an older age than their classmates?

A global trend in education has seen parents lean towards holding their children back, with research showing little academic benefit in starting early and considerable benefits in starting later. Psychologist, Dr Amanda Mergler, published an article in the Australasian Journal of Early Childhood. She found the proportion of parents holding children back until they turned six has almost doubled in the last five years. It has been reported that in NSW the proportion of parents holding children back could be as high as 22 percent.

Many factors must be taken into consideration when making this important decision. Your child’s class teacher is a good reference point. The time they spend with your child in an educational setting, will give them certain insights that others might not necessarily see. Interactions in a group learning space which demand skills such as concentration and on-task behaviour focus, can be very different to the individualised attention you provide at home.

To begin the first formal year of school confidently, teachers are mainly looking for specific skills that fall under the social and emotional areas of learning. These include:

  • Social maturity – Can they play with their peers and make friends? Can they share and take turns?
  • Communication – Can they communicate their feelings and needs?
  • Emotional maturity – Are they very shy and withdrawn? Or very emotional and sensitive?
  • Self-concept – Will they be able to cope with a formal schooling environment?
  • Adjustments – Can they adjust to a new environment? It is natural to be hesitant, but overly anxious can mean that they are not ready for school.
  • Independence – They should be able to dress themselves, open lunchboxes and containers, and be independent in their toileting habits.

Some related articles to this topic can be found here, giving an interesting view on both sides of this debate.

Cross Country

The NSW All Schools Cross Country was held on Friday and Redlands had three competitors representing NSWCIS.

Emma Mahon (Yr 10) had the race of the day finishing in 5th place in the 16 Years Girls 4k, qualifying for the Australian Cross Country Championships. Emma was up against a tough field of almost 100 established distance runners.

Olivia Vigneault (Yr 9) finished in 33rd place in the 15 Years Girls 4k. This was a great run for Olivia as she came down quite ill in the lead up to the event but still managed to get herself to the start line and compete and finish strong.

Isaac Brooks (Yr 7) finished in 35th place in the 13 Years boys 3k. The competition was a great learning venture for Isaac who made mention of the high standard of competition from ISA through to State yesterday, compared to the Junior School competition.

Football

With most of the boys teams playing St Pius and the Girls playing Barker and St Spyridon, the level of competition in Round 8 was high. The 14A boys, playing with only 10 players, knew it was going to be a tough match. It was a great team effort  leading to a spectacular goal by Lachlan Binnekamp. Solid defence and the ability to control the game saw the 1-0 lead carry through to the final whistle. They now see themselves tied in 2nd place heading into the last two games of the season.

Another fantastic display of Football was our 1st Boys team, coming up against top of the table St Pius. After conceding two early goals, the team re-grouped at half time, and came out firing with two goals seeing the game tied 2-2. A fantastic result against the top team. Despite a 1-2 loss, the 16A Boys played much better Football than their opponent and dominated the game, unfortunately missing a couple of players up front made it hard to convert on their efforts. Both the 13A and 13B Boys teams played against very strong well-drilled competition, it was great to see both teams fighting hard until the very end. The 15A Boys were also commended by the opposition on their attitude and effort throughout the duration of the game. Our 2nds boys matched up against a strong Oakhill side. There was a great team celebration after a Louis Eabry goal in a 1-3 loss.

The 1sts Girls travelled to Barker in what was predicted to be a very close match up as both teams were undefeated heading into the game. Goalkeeper Jasmine Black was a force to be reckoned with, saving some great shots by Barker. Despite the score line being 0-1 at the final whistle, our girls had a fantastic game and are playing great Football in the lead up to the upcoming ISA finals. The Inter A Girls also faced a strong Barker side, their toughest competition to date in a 0-2 loss, but showed some promising signs as they too prepare for the Finals. The 2nds Girls played against St Spyridon which is always a physical match up for our girls, ending in a 0-3 loss. The Junior A Girls played against SACS Junior A and went down in a 0-2 loss which is a positive result against the team currently sitting on top of the ladder.

The End of Season Football Dinner will be held on Friday 6 September at Dee Why RSL. Further details and booking information will be provided shortly.

Netball

We had some mixed results last weekend, with a number of teams coming away with some close victories, whilst others went down narrowly. Our 1sts took on Chevalier College in a tough encounter, with the teams within four points going into the last quarter, unfortunately Chevalier running away with the match. Our Inter A team took on Barker, looking to dominate early, the girls jumped out to a commanding lead and were looking to hold their finish. Barker clawed back into the game which made for an interesting final quarter, luckily the girls held on to take the match 34-31.

Our NSNA teams are fighting on towards the finals, with a number of teams still in the hunt. Our NSNA Yr 9 teams had some close victories. Our Yr 8 teams have been working on their combinations and thoroughly enjoyed their Netfit session last week. With only one team playing on Saturday, the 8C team went down in a close match against Monte 40. The girls are still holding down 4th spot on the ladder and will look for a big finish over the next few weeks. Our Yr 7 teams are due for some Netfit action this Thursday which is something they should all be excited for! Despite the tough matches this season, the girls are still showing huge improvements and they have shown outstanding team spirit and sportsmanship throughout their season.

Rugby

With our first game back from the holiday break we could be forgiven for expecting a little rust when it came to the quality of Rugby for the Redlands vs SACS clash. This was quickly put to the side as our Under 14s came out storming, coming up against an opposition that had previously beaten them by over 30 points. Our Redlands boys put all of this behind them. A late surge by SACS kept the score close in the end but Redlands were still able to get sweet revenge with a 45-36 win.

Our 15s looked to continue the trend, having lost their opening round clash against SACS as well. A side line conversion gave them a two point lead with less than five minutes on the clock, they just had to grind out the win. Unfortunately, a few errors, some poorly timed runs and SACS had the penalty to win it with the narrowest of victories 26-27.

Our 16s enjoyed the weekend off, playing a friendly match against SACS in a modified 7s format. The boys all appreciated the chance to dust off the cobwebs with a lot of running and some amazing length of the field tries.

Our 13s they were up against a side in SACS hungry to make up for their loss in Round 1. In one of the most back and forth games possible, each team fought to gain the upper hand. Similar to the 15s match, a late score from SACS sealed the loss 20-21.

Our 1st XV were out with a few points to prove, having put together a poor first half effort against SACS in their Round 1 clash. Brilliant tries to our outside backs meant we went to the half leading 39-12, a wonderful effort from the 1st  XV. A second half fightback from SACS looked to be on the cards as they scored 17 unanswered points against some poor defence but steadying tries got Redlands back into the groove, running away late to a 71-27 win.

Tennis

Saturday saw Redlands ISA and NSTA Tennis teams complete Round 8 of their respective competitions. With only a couple of rounds left, all ISA teams were looking for wins to move them closer to a finals spot. The Firsts started slowly against a confident St Pius team. The team were able to put themselves back in the match with strong singles wins from Sebastian and James. Unfortunately, the St Pius’s doubles play was stronger on the day. Redlands 2nds, 3rds, 4ths and 6ths played entertaining tennis, confidently applying skills practiced in training to all walk away with dominant wins. Students should be commended for the sportsmanship and teamwork they continue to display week in and week out.

The NSTA competition has just one round left before the finals/playoff rounds. With a number of students sick and injured, many teams demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and teamwork to help ensure the matches were all completed. The finals draw will be available following the completion of Round 9 on Saturday.

Important Dates

Saturday 3 August – ISA and NSTA Round 9
Saturday 10 August – ISA Round 10; NSTA – Finals/playoffs – a presentation and morning tea will follow the completion of all matches.
Saturday 17 August – ISA Finals
Thursday 22 August – Last Winter Sport Training
Saturday 31 August – ISA Presentation Day

Term 4 Summer Sport Choices

Summer sports options begin in Week 8 of Term 3 (11 September). An email containing all the information regarding sports choices and links to the Trybooking site for selection has been sent to all Junior School parents. Please consider this information carefully, consult with your child and and choose a sport for Summer 2019.

Athletics Carnival

Redlands Junior School Athletics Carnival is right around the corner on Wednesday 7 August. Held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, it’s a massive event and all students are training hard in PE classes to build fitness and refine techniques across the full range of track and field events. Keep an eye out for online permission.

AFL

Redlands Girls AFL players will be treated to a fundamental skills session run by AFLNSW this Saturday at Moore Park from 10.00-11.30am. The information and draw has been emailed to all signed up players and teams will be determined in the next few weeks before matches begin on 10 August.

Our Yrs 3 and 4 AFL players have been entered into a Spring Challenge competition which will take place on Friday afternoons in the last four or five weeks of term. Details aren’t yet final, but players are able to build their skills and fitness during Wednesday practice and at training on Friday mornings. As details become available around the Spring Challenge comp, I’ll let everyone know.

Our Yr 5/6 team faced a tough battle last week against a big and experienced Newington team. The boys have a bye this weekend and will be looking to turn the tables on St Pats in their final round on 10 August.

Football

Our Yr 6 footballers were happy at home this week taking on Coogee Prep and Central Coast Grammar School on the Redlands Oval, bathed in sunshine. Contests were very even and the quality of Football was great to watch, end to end and very exciting. All of our teams came up victorious in matches played with great spirit. Goalkeepers from both teams were player of the match, Shota Kinoshita and his Coogee counterpart showing tremendous courage and commitment to keep out the barrage of shots on target.

Yr 5 footballers battled hard at Trinity in some tightly fought well matched contests. The Yr 5 team have been focusing on maintaining shape and defensive structure and their composure showed, allowing just six goals across Grades A, B and C and showing big improvement in their ability to self organise at the back.

Yr 5 matches which were marked on the original draw as to be confirmed are as follows:

5C v Trinity at Cooke Park at 8.00am
5B v Trinity at Cooke Park at 8.45am
5A v Trinity at Cooke Park at 9.30am

Yr 3 footballers showed their shooting practice has been well worthwhile, both Blue and Gold teams netting five goals each last weekend at St Ives.

Netball

Redlands 14 had an emphatic 12-6 victory, showing their hard work is paying off. There were some tense moments through the night with Redlands 17 holding on for a tight draw and Redlands 18 a narrow victory after being behind early in their match.

Rugby Sevens

Our Rugby Sevens boys have gone from strength to strength and last week played against two of the strongest Rugby Sevens schools running around. Coogee Prep and Waverley take their Sevens seriously and our boys really took it to them last week. Taking wins from three of our four matches, the coaches are pretty impressed with our running style when we have the ball, but most taken with our strong tackling and commitment to the breakdown.

Winter Before School Training Schedule

The Term 3 sporting calendar, showing all training, matches and events is available on Redlands Pulse.

For all trainings on the Junior School Oval, please use your own discretion in extreme rain and weather situations. Often parents and students will have left home to attend before we can make a realistic judgement on the weather. If there is no danger of lightning, nor heavy rain which would soak anyone training outdoors, our aim is to go ahead and run the session. Coaches and/or staff will be in attendance. It’s not always possible to find an alternative training venue, but students will be supervised until school begins in this circumstance.

Curriculum Dance

Showcase

Congratulations to the students in Yrs 11 and 12 HSC and IB for their excellent performances at the Curriculum Dance Showcase last week. This Showcase featured self-choreographed works by our outgoing Yr 12 students as part of their studies for their HSC and IB as well as teacher choreographed performance works. The Yr 11 students danced performance and composition works from their classes, allowing an insight into what occurs within Curriculum Dance. Thank you to all the student dancers for their commitment to learning and performing the Yr 12 works and thank you to all the family and friends who attended. It was a great evening showcasing all our talented students.

For Yr 12 this was the culmination of their last two years of study. We thank them for their time and dedication to Dance throughout their Secondary school years. The HSC students will have their final practical examination on Friday 23 August and the IB students will be submitting all of their works in October. We wish them all the best for the final examinations and whatever path they choose beyond school.

Extension Chamber Music, Jazz Vocal Ensemble and Stage Band

With the start of new repertoire in preparation for upcoming Term 4 events, the Extension Music program has opened enrolments for students interested in joining ensembles to further extend their music skills. Instrumental Competition Auditions (Week 8)

Please note: Entries are ONLY accepted when accompaniment scores are submitted to Music Reception at the time of the application submission.
