Year 10
Year 10 Service Learning Initiative
This term, during Tutor time, Yr 10 students have been focusing on understanding with empathy the issues surrounding urban poverty and homelessness in Sydney. Students have been working in groups to research local community engagement efforts and to consider the impact these initiatives have on helping those in need. This unit has sparked excellent conversations around diversity, housing affordability and Yr 10’s role in addressing these issues as the leaders of tomorrow.
To further this learning through immersive activities, Yr 10 students will participate in a half-day excursion on Monday 16 September from 12pm-3pm, with two groups attending two different service initiatives.
One group of Yr 10 students will take part in the Cook4Good program, run by Kids Giving Back, in Paddington. They will have the opportunity to hear from the program’s founder and cook meals for those experiencing homelessness. This excursion offers students a firsthand experience of community service and the chance to give back through volunteering.
At the same time, the second group of Year 10 students will attend the Rough Edges initiative’s Urban Insight program. This educational experience takes students on a guided walking tour of the Darlinghurst/Kings Cross area, offering them a unique perspective on life on and around the streets of Sydney. Led by individuals with firsthand experience of homelessness, this program allows students to explore the realities of urban poverty.
This valuable service-learning experience links to the following outcomes in the Redlands Student Wellbeing Framework:
Social Awareness:
- 3.2 Demonstrating empathy and compassion: Demonstrating respect for people from different social and cultural groups. Contextualising my experience of the world with real-world experiences of others.
- 3.3 Contributing to civil society: Participating actively in opportunities to enact change and impact society.
Year 10 Leadership Project: Yr 6 Connect with Yr 10
This week, the Yr 6 and Yr 10 connection sessions continued in the Arnold Library, with Yr 10 students enthusiastically leading Year 6 students through a variety of icebreaker activities. The feedback from these sessions has been fantastic – Yr 6 students have expressed that they feel more comfortable about starting secondary school, knowing they have older students looking out for them. Meanwhile, Yr 10 students have reflected on how excited they are to help Yr 6 students feel connected across the school, making the transition to high school feel less daunting.

Bougainvillea Talent Showcase
Our Bougainvillea club are thrilled to announce the Bougainvillea Redlands Talent Showcase, a wonderful event that offers students a unique opportunity to share their talents and connect with the community! The showcase will be held at the Bougainvillea Residential Home next to the school grounds on 19 September (Week 9) from 2:00pm – 3:30 pm. Not only is this a chance for your child to perform and brighten the day of some truly lovely people, but it also provides a meaningful way to engage in further service, as has been our focus this term. Students can perform anything they want, for any amount of time. Some performance ideas include dancing, singing, playing a music instrument, stand-up comedy, drama skit, juggling, magic, poetry recitation and more!
Whether your child prefers to perform solo or as part of a group, all types of acts are welcome! It is a fantastic way for students to develop their confidence, showcase their skills, and experience the joy of giving back. It will be a fun and rewarding afternoon.
Please encourage your child to take part in this heartwarming event. Entry submissions are due by 16 of September at 3:30 pm. Students can sign up here.
