Issue 27 2024 Term 3 Week 7 - 05 Sep 2024

From the Principal

On Tuesday our Year 12 Captains ran their final Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) student led assembly for the year. Our School Captains, Isaac and Jazz, reflected on how they remembered being Year 7 students not that long ago and looking up to the School Captains back in 2019, Chloe and Josiah, when they led assemblies – never imagining that one day they would follow in their footsteps.

Like many Year 12 students at this time of year, they shared how they cannot believe they only have a few weeks left of their time at Redlands and so wanted to share some of their reflections to students in Years 7 and 8.

  • Cherish your time at Redlands and make the most of all of the incredible opportunities given to you;
  • Move out of your comfort zones and “step beyond” to try new activities, forge new relationships and break through perceived limitations; and
  • Make the most of the amazing Redlands community and know that you are not alone on your schooling journey and have the support of classmates, teachers, friends and parents.

Recently, I have been reflecting back on my time in high school in the United States (yes, it was a long time ago), as members of our “varsity soccer” team (I am using the American term on purpose) have been sharing videos of our Year 12 season with each other and reminiscing about our special memories – our camaraderie off the field, a penalty shoot-out victory on the field and even the big “pep rally” before the grand final.

As our Year 12 students come to the end of their Redlands journey, I do hope that they will similarly look back fondly on their time at school and cherish these memories moving forward.

Father’s Day Celebration

There was a definite buzz in the air on Monday morning with our Father’s Day celebration in the Junior Campus piazza. I was delighted to join a large number of dads and special friends for coffee and breakfast before they had the opportunity to spend some quality time participating in classroom activities with their children.

Please join us as our whole community celebrates our 140th birthday, shining a light on 140 years of exceptional education at Redlands.

Community Update

It was a pleasure to have our Dads and special friends on the Junior Campus earlier this week, extending Father’s Day celebrations into another day! Our students and staff were delighted and excited to host our guests before School for coffee and snacks in the Piazza before joining in classroom and outdoor activities.

Excitement is building with just over six weeks to go until our highly anticipated Festival of Redlands that will take place on Saturday 19 October on our Junior Campus. Our Festival of Redlands will shine a light on 140 years of the School highlighting our rich and diverse culture, growth, talent and community. From 1-5pm, the Festival will showcase Performing Arts, Sports, Academics, Visual Arts, Innovative Design and Outdoor Education and feature an international food extravaganza and a House Challenge. Tickets go on sale next week and more information can be found in the RPFA section of Note Day, along with information on the wide range of other parent and carer events that continue to connect our community.

The Redlands Parents’ Prayer Group provides our current parent community with the opportunity to come together in prayer. We invite you to join our Chaplains and Principal for our Term 3 gathering on Tuesday 17 September from 5.30 to 6.30pm in the Staff Room (2nd Floor) in the Liggins Building on the Senior Campus. Light refreshments will be provided, during an informal time of fellowship and prayer. Please extend this invitation to any other parents or families you think would appreciate being included.

A reminder that clean pre-loved uniforms can be donated through the Uniform Shop for the upcoming Second Uniform Sale that will take place on Friday 13 September. This initiative enables us to recycle pre-loved uniforms back into the community whilst raising valuable funds for our means-tested Scholarship Fund. Further details can again be found in the RPFA section of today’s Note Day.

Thank you for your continued guidance and support and as ever, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Community Engagement team, or to me directly, should you have any feedback, suggestions or questions.

Festival of Redlands – Celebrating 140 Years of Redlands

We look forward to welcoming many members of our vibrant community there.

Birthday Wishes: Vicky Kvisle, Redlander 1974

I am a proud member of the class of 1974. It’s an honour to celebrate Redlands and reflect on the incredible impact this School has had on my life. Redlands gave me amazing opportunities that I will always cherish. It wasn’t just a place of learning; it was a place where lifelong friendships were forged, and the values and lessons I gained there, shaped who I am today.

It’s truly exciting to see the school Redlands has become – growing and thriving while staying true to its essence. I’ve also had the joy of watching my daughter, Anna-Lisa, blossom at Redlands, just as I did all those years ago.

Here’s to many more years of inspiring young minds and nurturing bright futures.

Happy Birthday, Redlands!

Senior Piano Competition

On Friday night last week, the Junior and Senior Piano Competitions were hosted in Edwards Auditorium and adjudicated by concert pianist and composer Daniel Rojas. In this special event for auditioned pianists, students were able to perform their pieces that they had worked on for many months. The standard of music performance was very high, with the adjudicator finding each division very difficult to award.

Congratulations to all performers, and particularly Yr 12 student Jiaqi (Ahnu) Guan, who was the overall winner for the Senior Piano Competition.

Pockets

Alongside the introduction of the new uniform we have been looking at the best way to recognise student participation in sport and cocurricular activities. This is through Merit Certificates, Pockets and Colours. We’ve been working to update and simplify the process for awarding Pockets and Colours while ensuring that awards recognise genuine commitment to activities over a number of years. As an outward recognition of a students’ contribution to the life of the School they are something to strive for. An updated set of guidelines can be seen here.

Startup Bootcamp Speed Mentoring Session

Startup Bootcamp had the pleasure of welcoming a group of parents, supporters and critical friends to Redlands for a speed mentoring session. Our students took the opportunity to conduct interviews with a focus on testing their most critical assumptions—the beliefs on which their entire startup ideas depend. If these assumptions are incorrect, it’s vital to uncover this early in the process!

Students were encouraged to approach their ideas with flexibility and stay open to unexpected insights as they listened carefully to the needs of potential customers.

Thank you to Redlands alumni Nicky Bryson and Ryan Bogatez, who not only participated in the customer discovery session but also led a mini-panel to share their valuable experiences as founders. We are grateful to the Macquarie University Incubator and Young Wisdom Pty Ltd for their collaboration in co-designing these enriching experiences. A special thanks to Liz Green, the Redlands Innovation and Entrepreneurial Learning Strategist, for her continuous support and guidance. Finally, a big thank you to the Redlands staff, who support our students every step of the way, and to the parents—the biggest supporters of these innovative young people.

Buzzing with Creativity: Beekeeping Club’s Beeswax Candle-Making Workshop

Last Tuesday, at lunchtime, the Beekeeping Club students had the pleasure of working with Roof Top Bees on the Roof Top Garden of the Redlands Learning Hub. It was a delightful and insightful experience that left a lasting impression on all involved.

As students gathered on the Roof Top Garden, the experts from Roof Top Bees guided students through the fascinating process of making candles from natural beeswax. Students observed and participated in every step, to create their own eco-friendly candle. This hands-on workshop not only taught students valuable skills but also deepened students’ appreciation for the essential role that bees play in the environment.

Students were grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such a rewarding project and look forward to future endeavors with a renewed sense of purpose and enthusiasm. Thank you to Ms Kimberlee Chipper for organising another interesting and hands-on workshop.

Yr 12 Privileges

Starting Monday Wk 8, Yr 12 students will be able to sign in late or sign out early if they have a Study Period at the start or end of the day. This next round of privileges is meant to support students in organising their own schedule, plan accordingly for their study and final events as well as support them in this next step toward independence and graduation. Please note the guidelines for these privileges:

  • Students are expected to be in all of their timetabled classes, on time, including Tutor and, Core sessions, assemblies, Yr 12 End of Year Events and Recess Morning Teas
  • Students may only come in late if they have a study period first or second period. Then they must sign in before Tutor.
  • Students may only leave after lunch if they have no lessons 5 and 6. They may leave during lesson 6 if you have no class then.
  • Students must sign in and out at student reception.
  • If students have study periods in lessons 3 and 4, they may not leave the site. The earliest they can sign out, is lunchtime

If the above is not followed, privileges will be removed. The Yr 12 cohort is expected to uphold these guidelines responsibly to ensure everyone can take advantage of this round of privileges in a respectful and responsible manner. Again, these privileges do not apply for Year 12 events – student attendance at these events is required.

Money Confidence Program by Monyvest, Financial Education

Today, Yr 12 participated in the Money Confidence Program where students were guided through setting up their MyGov account with the ATO, challenged to find their interest rate for a current savings account, asked to check on their tax payable, how and when to file their tax return and how to start saving early with Superannuation to make the most amount of money possible for their future, starting now. Dominic was an engaging presenter and he answered a many specific questions that came up during the presentation. He also gave students a “to-do” list of items to go home and begin today.

Economics Workshop

Recently, several Year 12 Economics students—Eliot de Macedo Stewart, Mia St. Clair, Jacob Pamenter, Zac Stonley and Connor Ikin—prepared and delivered an insightful workshop on monetary policy to the Year 11 Economics class. Their presentation covered the operation and effectiveness of monetary policy during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This initiative required substantial research and preparation, offering Year 11 students an engaging and insightful learning experience. It also served as an excellent revision exercise for all students involved. A big thank you to the Year 12 students for their dedication and effort in making these lessons a success.

Rugby Captain Highlight: Hugo Scott

Hugo Scott has been an avid athlete his entire life, especially since starting in the Secondary School. He most recently competed in the ISA Season (Independent Sporting Association), where he was recognised for his incredible dedication and ability in the sport. As Hugo has been heavily involve in Rugby and has led his team with professionalism, support and grit, please see some of Hugo’s reflections and comments on what he has learned through Sport.

Proudest achievement in Rugby to date: Leading the amalgamation of three schools to combine this season to create the inaugural barbarians combination squad.

Goals for Rugby/Sport in the future: To continue to enjoy the sport within a local rugby club and to continue to play at a competitive level. With rugby being a physically demanding sport it allows me to focus on fitness and conditioning and continue to set goals to improve and push my physical condition. Lastly, to continue to meet new people, build connections with coaches and players, opening doors to new opportunities within the future.

What you have learned about yourself through playing Sport: One of my most valuable lessons has been the power of the mind and self-confidence in overcoming obstacles and pushing beyond imagined limitations. Rugby has taught me that mental toughness can be considerably more important than athletic skill. I’ve learnt to trust my gut feelings, stay calm under pressure and believe in myself, even in the face of hardship. The sport has taught me that confidence is more than simply understanding your talents; it is also about accepting your faults and working hard to improve.

How you managed the HSC with your Sport commitments: Since the beginning of the HSC, I’ve had to master time management in order to stay organised with both academics, field training and gym sessions. I learned to prioritise tasks, set realistic goals and maintain a disciplined schedule. By staying organised and focused, I managed to keep up with my studies while dedicating myself fully to the sport I love. This organisational success has enabled me to keep a work-sport balance maintaining a healthy combination of both.

Year 11

Year 11 Examinations

Year 11 examinations are currently underway, and students should be exceptionally proud of how they are managing this period. From nerves to excitement, they are demonstrating resilience and determination, rising to the challenge with a positive attitude.

We wish them all the best for their second week of examinations and encourage them to continue their focused efforts.

Year 10

Year 10 Service Learning Initiative

This term, during Tutor time, Yr 10 students have been focusing on understanding with empathy the issues  surrounding urban poverty and homelessness in Sydney. Students have been working in groups to research local community engagement efforts and to consider the impact these initiatives have on helping those in need. This unit has sparked excellent conversations around diversity, housing affordability and Yr 10’s role in addressing these issues as the leaders of tomorrow.

To further this learning through immersive activities, Yr 10 students will participate in a half-day excursion on Monday 16 September from 12pm-3pm, with two groups attending two different service initiatives.

One group of Yr 10 students will take part in the Cook4Good program, run by Kids Giving Back, in Paddington. They will have the opportunity to hear from the program’s founder and cook meals for those experiencing homelessness. This excursion offers students a firsthand experience of community service and the chance to give back through volunteering.

At the same time, the second group of Year 10 students will attend the Rough Edges initiative’s Urban Insight program. This educational experience takes students on a guided walking tour of the Darlinghurst/Kings Cross area, offering them a unique perspective on life on and around the streets of Sydney. Led by individuals with firsthand experience of homelessness, this program allows students to explore the realities of urban poverty.

This valuable service-learning experience links to the following outcomes in the Redlands Student Wellbeing Framework:

Social Awareness:

  • 3.2 Demonstrating empathy and compassion: Demonstrating respect for people from different social and cultural groups. Contextualising my experience of the world with real-world experiences of others.
  • 3.3 Contributing to civil society: Participating actively in opportunities to enact change and impact society.

Year 10 Leadership Project: Yr 6 Connect with Yr 10

This week, the Yr 6 and Yr 10 connection sessions continued in the Arnold Library, with Yr 10 students enthusiastically leading Year 6 students through a variety of icebreaker activities. The feedback from these sessions has been fantastic – Yr 6 students have expressed that they feel more comfortable about starting secondary school, knowing they have older students looking out for them. Meanwhile, Yr 10 students have reflected on how excited they are to help Yr 6 students feel connected across the school, making the transition to high school feel less daunting.

A big thank you to the following Yr 10 students who volunteered their time to support our Year 6 students through this initiative this week:

  • William Birse
  • Genevieve Holt
  • Millie Salmond
  • Zara Anderson
  • Lachlan Price-Pontifex

Year 9

Good Luck to our Senior Choir

Our Senior Choir members are performing with The Cat Empire at the Sydney Opera House this week on Friday night.

Our Year 9 students who are part of this group are Ava Atkinson, Eva Blundell, Hugo Burton, India Dutton, Jessica Jackson, Talie Kara, Ruairi Lambert, Philomena Lee, Zoe McKeown, Sahara Nicolas, Isabella Solgaard, Emilia Stucci, Zoe Trevena, William Vass and Tara Ward.

We hope it goes well and that it is a wonderful experience.

House Debating

The House Debating competition continued this week with Cowper taking on Dumolo on the topic: ‘The study of Shakespeare should not be mandated in the Australian curriculum.’

The debate was well-argued and considered questions of current relevance, language development and teacher influence on student understanding of Shakespeare’s work. Adjudicator, Jack Keogh (Year 12) ultimately awarded the debate to Cowper based on the strength of their argument on the timelessness of the themes in Shakespeare’s work and how this can teach us about changing societal attitudes today.

Screens at Bedtime

An interesting article published yesterday by The Conversation examines the impacts of screen time in the evening and before bed – It’s almost impossible to keep teens off their phones in bed – but new research shows it really does affect their sleep.

Bougainvillea Talent Showcase

We are thrilled to announce the Bougainvillea Redlands Talent Showcase, a wonderful event that offers students a unique opportunity to share their talents and connect with the community! The showcase will be held at the Bougainvillea Retirement Village on 19 September, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. Not only is this a chance for your child to perform and brighten the day of some truly lovely people, but it also provides a meaningful way to earn extra service or CAS hours.

Whether your child prefers to perform solo or as part of a group, all types of acts are welcome! It’s a fantastic way for students to develop their confidence, showcase their skills and experience the joy of giving back. Participating students will enjoy a fun and rewarding afternoon.

Encourage your child to take part in this heartwarming event. Entry submissions are due by 16 September at 3:30 pm.

Year 8

The Smell of Blossoms on the Wind – is it Spring Already?

Blossoms on the wind
Trees and flowers awaken
Colours fill the air

Excursion to Manly Dam

Last Friday, Year 8 were treated to perfect weather as they headed out on their Geography excursion to visit Manly Dam. Not only did the excursion introduce many of them to a beautiful hidden gem of Sydney’s natural reserves but it also gave them the opportunity to put into practice some of the knowledge and skills they have been developing in their Water in the World topic. Students learned about the history and topography of the Manly Dam location and engaged in a range of practical experiments including developing water filters to try to produce clean water, measuring soil PH levels to determine soil health and sifting through water shallows to determine levels of biodiversity. On top of this, they had a wonderful opportunity to spend the day together with their peers in perfect weather outside of the four walls of their regular classrooms!

House Debating Round 2

This week we saw our final two Houses, Cowper and Dumolo, go head-to-head in House Debating, arguing passionately over the topic that in NSW the age of criminal liability should be raised from 10 to 16. Dumolo affirmed the topic and Cowper negated. It was a particularly intellectual and well-research debate with sophisticated legal jargon and telling facts about rates of youth imprisonment and influences on recidivism offered. The Cowper and Dumolo speakers were convincing and passionate, engaging in thoughtful argument over whether we can justly attribute responsibility to offenders younger than 16 given their incomplete cognitive development, whilst also exploring the impact of alternatives to imprisonment on the life outcomes of children. It was a closely fought affair but, in the end, Yr 12 adjudicator Jack Petering, awarded the debate to Dumolo. Congratulations to Lachlan Carter, Aaron Oh and Eddie Williams.

We look forward to seeing Dumolo and McDouall face off in the finals in Week 9 as they argue the topic that in NSW parents should not have the right to withdraw their children from school education on sexuality and respectful relationships.

Student Shout Outs

Well done to Michelle Byron who was recently awarded a Step Beyond award for the kindness and support she has shown to her peers in the year group. The nomination submitted for her was particularly lovely, demonstrating the powerful gratitude members of our cohort have expressed towards her.

My friends and I would like to nominate Michelle Byron for the Step Beyond Award. We believe she is always going out of her way to make other people happy. She brightens everyone’s day by being kind and compassionate. She tries really hard to make friends with everyone she meets.

Congratulations also to Audrey Kwok, Charlie Lee and Aimee Kang who were recognised in our Stage Assembly, respectively, as first place, runner up and highly commended in the Redlands Writing Competition this year. It is wonderful to see students composing pieces beyond their class work to develop their creative skills.

Subject Spotlight – Technology

Recently, we visited Yr 8 Technology and was fascinated to see their focus this term. Students are enjoying planning and designing C02 Dragsters, which they will eventually build and race! I look forward to seeing the products they will make!

Bougainvillea Talent Showcase

Our Bougainvillea Club are thrilled to announce the Bougainvillea Redlands Talent Showcase, a wonderful event that offers students a unique opportunity to share their talents and connect with the community! The showcase will be held at the Bougainvillea Residential Home next to the school grounds on 19 September 19 (Week 9) from 2:00pm – 3:30 pm. Not only is this a chance for your child to perform and brighten the day of some truly lovely people, but it also provides a meaningful way to engage in further service, as has been our focus this term. Students can perform anything they want, for any amount of time. Some performance ideas include dancing, singing, playing a music instrument, stand-up comedy, drama skit, juggling, magic, poetry recitation and more!

Whether your child prefers to perform solo or as part of a group, all types of acts are welcome! It is a fantastic way for students to develop their confidence, showcase their skills, and experience the joy of giving back. It will be a fun and rewarding afternoon.

Please encourage your child to take part in this heartwarming event. Entry submissions are due by 16  September at 3:30 pm. Students can sign up here.

Holiday Service Opportunity – Kids Giving Back:

In line with our current focus on service, our Acting Coordinator of Service Learning and Social Engagement, Ms Peterson, has identified a valuable service program that operates during the school holidays run by the organisation, Kids Giving Back. Kids Giving Back coordinate school holiday programs that help to introduce children to the world of volunteering and empower them to give back in an age-appropriate ways. Their Helping Hands for the Homeless gives children the chance to cook meals and assemble essential items for people experiencing homelessness and tough times. Children will learn about the causes and impacts of homelessness and how their community supports those most vulnerable. If this might be of interest to you, please visit Kids Giving Back for more information.

Moonbah – Gearing up for Growth:

On Monday 18 November from 6:00pm-8:00pm, an information evening will be held for parents and all students attending Moonbah. This will provide families with all the necessary information they require to be best prepared for our 2025 Moonbah program. Please see the graphic below for further details.

Year 7

Our Wonderful Redlands Community

It has been wonderful to see so many Yr 7 students getting actively involved in the life of the School. Over the last few weeks we have seen so many students attend the following events.

  • Fuse Cup
  • Meeting of Minds
  • House Debating Competition
  • ISA Athletics
  • ICAS Maths
  • Book Week
  • HICES Music Festival

Meeting of Minds

Last week, 10 Yr 7 students attend the Meeting of Minds on the topic of Ethics. During this day of philosophical inquiry students investigated the topic of “now-ism”: Do we value people living now more than future generations? Within this day, students developed skills in Critical thinking, Creative thinking and Collaborative thinking.  A huge congratulations goes to the following students: Yolanda Bai, Kody Benoliel, Tara Clarke, Julian Lundberg, Cleo McLay, Sophia Moriarty, Alma O’Leary, Sam Parsons, Jennifer Todd and Ethan Wei. A big thank you also goes out to Dr Poon and Dr Regis for their continued engagement and support of our Yr 7 students.

Beekeeping Club – Candle Making

This week at Beekeeping Club the students were lucky enough to make beeswax candles. Beeswax, a natural byproduct of honey production, is valued for its clean burn, sweet honey-like scent and bright flame. The process is relatively simple but requires attention to detail, such as maintaining the right temperature to avoid scorching the wax and ensuring the wick is centered for an even burn. Beeswax candles are eco-friendly, non-toxic and often used for their calming ambiance. The students enjoyed this process and created some excellent candles to take home.

ISA Athletics

The Independent Sporting Association (ISA) Athletics Carnival is a major event in the sporting calendar for independent schools across New South Wales (NSW). This annual competition brings together students from various independent schools to compete in a range of track and field events, such as sprints, relays, long jump and shot put. The carnival is a celebration of athletic talent and school spirit, fostering a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition among students. It provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and strive for personal bests while representing their schools. The ISA Athletics Carnival also emphasises the values of sportsmanship, teamwork and perseverance, making it a significant and memorable experience for all participants. Through this event, students not only enhance their physical abilities but also build confidence and develop important life skills that extend beyond the sports field.

Shout Outs

Well done to Mac Costa and Xander Christian-Hare for their fantastic readings in our Stage 4 Assembly this week.

Bougainvillea Talent Showcase

Father’s Day

This week, our Junior School was filled with joy and laughter as we celebrated Father’s Day on campus. It was heartwarming to see our community come together, with fathers and father figures joining us on the playground and in classrooms. The opportunity to share these moments, from classroom activities to playground fun, truly highlighted the strong bonds that make our school community so special.

Year 3 Celebrate Premier’s Reading Challenge Milestone

This week our Year 3 students celebrated achieving their goal for each student to complete the 2024 Premier’s Reading Challenge. Every student in Year 3 reached their personal goal of reading 20 books to meet the collective reading total of 2,460 books!  Congratulations to all students who enjoyed watching a story come to life on the big screen in our Arnold Library from the comfort of their sleeping bags.  This doubled as an opportunity for students to practice rolling up their sleeping bags as they look forward to and prepare for camp next week.

Year 5 STEM Interschool Challenge Day

A group of our Year 5 students recently participated in an exciting STEM interschool challenge day.  They joined forces with students from Loreto Kirribilli and St Aloysius to delve into the fascinating world of machine learning and robot automation. Working in mixed teams, they explored ideas on how robots could solve real-world problems in a Smart City.

One creative project involved designing a robot to deliver medicines and perform check-ups in isolation wards. The robot was programmed to follow color-coded markers on hospital floors, ensuring accurate navigation. Students built a prototype to test their code and created a promotional video to explain how their robot would work in a real-world scenario. Congratulations to:  Morris Huang, Alex Polson, Zac Edwards, Jax Hulsbosch, Oscar Warburton, Arran Stewart, Ollie Whitelaw, Mia Howes, Asmi So, Alaina Rasiah, Madeleine Hogue, Eliana Ibrahim and Audrey Reynolds who participated in this inspiring day of innovation and collaboration.

Redlands Piano Competition

Last Friday, the Junior and Senior Piano competitions were hosted in Edwards Auditorium, adjudicated by concert pianist and composer Daniel Rojas. In this special event for auditioned Piano students, they were able to perform their pieces that they had practised and worked on for many months. The standard of music performance was very high, with the adjudicator finding each division very difficult to adjudicate!

Congratulations to all performers, and particularly Sienna Lepone, who was the overall winner for the Junior Piano Competition.

What a Week!

We had a fabulous week filled with meaningful events that brought our Preschool community closer together. On Monday, we were thrilled to celebrate Father’s Day with a special event dedicated to the amazing dads and grandpas in our lives.

It was a heartwarming morning as we opened our learning spaces to these special men. The children had a blast sharing their favorite activities and projects, and it was a joy to see the strong connections being made between families. We hope that all the incredible men who joined us had a memorable and enjoyable day. Your presence and participation help to create a nurturing and supportive environment for our children, and we are grateful for each of you.

What a wonderful, sunny day we had for our Seniors and PreK Sports Carnival on Wednesday! It was a spectacular event filled with energy, enthusiasm and community spirit. The children had a blast participating in all the exciting activities. A huge thank you goes out to all our Year 6 helpers. Your support was invaluable, and your enthusiasm made the day even more special for the younger children.

We’d also like to extend a special thanks to Ms Longworth for her outstanding organisation and preparation. Her meticulous planning ensured that the event ran smoothly and was a resounding success. We are so grateful for her dedication and hard work.

Thank you for being a part of our community and making events like this possible. We look forward to more opportunities to come together and celebrate the wonderful relationships we build within our Preschool family.

Secondary Sport

To start this week I was lucky enough to attend the AIS Sport Leadership Conference which centred around ‘Lighting the Fire: Building a Passion for School Sport’, over the course of the program there were a number of key messages particularly as they related to the many challenges in which students face not just with school sport, but also balancing the academic pressures, this is something that we have always focused on within the Redlands Sport programs. A key message from the conference for me was developing resilience, which was  defined by the idea that “life isn’t fair, but you still play to win,” aligns closely with a quote by Marcus Aurelius: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Both concepts highlight the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity, a mindset that is especially relevant when balancing school sports with academics.

In the context of school sports, this resilience teaches adolescents to embrace challenges rather than shy away from them. When students are preparing for exams, the pressure can feel overwhelming, and it might seem easier to give up on cocurricular activities like sports. However, just as in sports, where the game doesn’t stop because the conditions aren’t ideal, life’s demands don’t pause for convenience. This is where resilience becomes crucial.

  • Accepting the Challenge: Adolescents learn that exams and assessments are a part of life’s tests, much like the tough opponents they face in sports. Instead of seeing these academic challenges as obstacles, they can view them as opportunities to demonstrate their resilience, just as they would in a difficult match.
  • Balancing Priorities: recognising that while life may not always be fair, with time constraints or unexpected difficulties, the goal remains the same—doing your best. This mindset encourages students to manage their time effectively, balancing both their academic and athletic commitments without compromising on either.
  • Focusing on Growth: In both sports and academics, setbacks are inevitable. A missed shot or a lower-than-expected grade can feel like a failure. However, by adopting the mindset that what stands in the way becomes the way, students can use these challenges as fuel for improvement. Just as an athlete analyses and learns from a poor performance, a student can reflect on what went wrong in an exam and make necessary adjustments.
  • Resilience in Adversity: When exams or assessments coincide with important sports events, students may feel unfairly burdened. However, students should see this as an opportunity to rise above the circumstances. They continue to train, compete and study, knowing that their effort in these tough times builds character and prepares them for future challenges in life.

‘Strength does not come from winning. your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender. That is strength’

Redlands Concussion Protocols and Updates

Following the publication of the AIS Australian Concussion Guidelines for Youth and Community Sport, the School has released a new Concussion Procedure along with a Concussion Referral and Clearance Form and a Graduated Return to Sport Framework. These documents can be found on Redlands Pulse and are linked below:

In addition, we have published a Concussion Information Sheet which summarises how concussion is managed and the pathway a student must follow to return to competition.

Key points include:

  • recognising red flag signs or symptoms of concussion (call 000 immediately)
  • a student suspected of concussion must follow the graduated return to sport framework before they can return to competition
  • a parent/carer is now required to take their child to a healthcare practitioner within 72 hours of the incident for the initial consult and again after 14 days symptom-free (at rest) before the resumption of contact training

Please read the procedure and if you have any queries on how a student will be managed following a suspected concussion, feel free to reach out to the designated Concussion Officer for each campus.

The following staff members have been designated as the Concussion Officer for each campus:

  • Ms Mia Lundquist (Secondary School)
  • Mr Eddy Atkins (High Country Campus)

Basketball

Rhino Basketballers – a fantastic start to the 24/25 season starting with trials last week.

Movie night – Ice Maiden

Ice Maiden charts the uncompromising determination of Australian Lisa Blair, who became the first woman in history to sail solo around Antarctica. It’s an epic tale of perseverance, pushing limits and believing you can achieve something even when you don’t know how.

The film has a strong message about setting goals and making a difference in the world and self-improvement. The subject of the documentary, Lisa Blair, is a multi-world record holder and regularly does talks for schools about her adventures, achievements, climate change, pollution and what we can do about these issues.

You can find the films website here

The trailer for the film here

The best way to book the screening on the 11 September would be via the Hayden Orpheum website here

Alternatively you can go to the Ice Maiden film website for more screening locations and dates here.

The film was co-directed and co-written by Nathaniel Jackson, Redlander 1998.

Saturday Sport Absences

  • Parents are required to log an absence via the Sports Absence Form available on Redlands Pulse – Secondary School Sport (under ‘Quick Links’ prior to missing any training session or weekly fixture.
  • Any student unable to attend a Saturday fixture due to illness, is required to submit a Medical Certificate to their Sports administrator by the Monday morning following the missed fixture.
  • Injured students are required to attend all training sessions and Saturday fixtures.
  • Failure to do any of the above will jeopardise a student’s eligibility for Colours, Pockets, and Awards and result in school disciplinary action.
  • Please refer to the Student Planner 2024 for full details on requirements for participating in a Representative Sport.
  • Bus Transport
    • When travelling on Redlands transport the Redlands school rules are in place and students should be always upholding the values of the school:

      • Obey the transport rules and regulations at all times (seat belts must be worn at all times).
      • Leave the bus how they found it (no rubbish, no mess).

Students who fail to meet the standards of the above will face school disciplinary action.

Wet Weather

  • Unless communicated differently or in the morning of the session (via Redlands Pulse & Clipboard), all training sessions are to be deemed ‘on’.

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – Year 9 Excursion

Last Thursday, Year 9 Drama students attended a performance of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at the Belvoir St Theatre. Although it was a late evening after a long day, across the board students garnered an immense amount of value from seeing the production. Students made particular note of the inventive staging choices and the way the production brought the characters to life with enthusiasm and authenticity. While many were expecting a murder-mystery, they were surprised and delighted by the heartfelt, unique tale of a young boy with autism encountering new truths about himself and those around him.

Junior and Senior Piano Competitions

On Friday Night last week, the Junior and Senior Piano Competitions were hosted in Edwards Auditorium and adjudicated by concert pianist and composer Daniel Rojas. In this special event for auditioned pianists, students were able to perform their pieces that they had worked on for many months. The standard of music performance was very high, with the adjudicator finding each division very difficult to award.

Congratulations to all performers, and particularly Yr 3 student Sienna Lepone and Yr 12 student Jiaqi (Ahnu) Guan, who were the overall winners for the Junior and Senior Piano Competitions.
