Year 10

This Week in Year 10

On Monday during Tutor time, we began our Coaching Conversations between students and their Tutor. During these conversations, students are shown their iGrow tree, where their data in terms of academic achievement, effort, cocurricular involvement and general school behaviour and attendance are visible to students. Guided by the students, Tutors carefully move through this information, allowing the student to process and reflect on it, before setting themselves goals for growth for the Term 1. This term, we encouraged students to set at least one academic goal and one growth goal, and they have been thoughtful, with their eye on the journey towards their Senior academic studies, as they make this goal.

Here are some of the goals articulated by Yr 10 students so far:

  • I would like to focus on adapting my study schedule as I progress throughout the term so it fits better with my cocurricular activities and home learning tasks. I will constantly make edits and updates to my calendar so it actually fits my daily routine and becomes more useful.
  • I would like to focus on writing this term because my English marks aren’t where I want them. I will access the feedback I have gotten in previous tasks and ask for more feedback from the teacher in future tasks.
  • I would like to focus on challenging and extending myself in my classes in preparation for the HSC or IB. I will seek extra feedback from my teachers on my extension work.
  • My goal is to expand my social circle and make new connections by actively participating in cocurricular activities, sports, and clubs that interest me. I aim to step out of my comfort zone and engage in new experiences to enrich my Year 10 journey. Additionally, I am committed to staying organised with my school work by completing homework on time, maintaining a schedule and going above and beyond what is expected in preparation for classes.

After moving through a full rotation of our new timetables, Yr 10 are certainly back as part of the Redlands landscape. On Thursday, we held a Chapel session where students learned more about the foundations of Valentine’s Day and explored what the Bible says about love. This gave us time to ponder how to bring ‘love’ to our own lives and the people around us in meaningful, caring ways. Chapel is a lovely opportunity for students to reflect and meditate on their feelings, a moment of respite in a busy day.

UNSW GERRIC Gifted Students Program

Congratulations to the following Yr 10 students who were invited to participate in the UNSW GERRIC Gifted Students Program (10-12 January). To qualify for the program, they needed to show evidence of exceptional academic ability, achievement and critical thinking skills. They participated in university-style seminars and advanced content pitched at two years above grade level. They also toured the science labs and observatory, as well as engaged in projects centred around cosmology, theories of relativity, myths about the lost city of Atlantis, the science of the brain and the practice of logical thinking.
