Academy Year 1 RAD Ballet Students

We are excited that our Redlands House and Kindi classes are going so well, and Mini Movers is a massive hit with the children. So far the favourite genre has been HipHop, but jazz comes a close 2nd! There are still spaces in these classes, so take a look on our dance Timetables if you have a little one who loves to dance.

Our new Lyrical classes have also been a big hit for both Juniors and Seniors. The Saturday 3-4pm Year 7-9 class has been so well attended that we have decided to add another at 1-2pm on Saturdays (in the Adams Centre). So, if anyone wishes to try this class out feel free to turn up for a trial.

Love!

This week the message of love was all around. This week we celebrated how and who we love in our lives as well as extending love to those in need. At our student led assembly this week, our Year 2 students shared the message of kindness and love in the classroom and in the playground. New students to Redlands were highlighted as they are still navigating new routines and friendships and, in some cases, a new language. Our little learners are encouraged to check in with friends, use kind language and most of all share the joy of friendship with others who may be lonely or sad. Perhaps have a chat with your child about any new students in their class and how they are settling in or maybe organise a play date so that mums and dads can also experience the joy of a Redlands friendship.

Thank you to all families for helping us create safe and calm drop off and pick up times by respecting the Allister Street and Prep car line processes. Most parents have been supportive and respectful when asked to move along or to do a lap around the block when they have arrived a little early. Can we please encourage everyone to continue to respect the procedures as the term goes on.

A gentle reminder that the area outside of Redlands House is for 5-minute parking only. Staff will ask you to move along if you stay longer than 5 minutes as will the Council Traffic Warden who now patrols Allister Street more regularly.

Helping You and Your Child Navigate Separation

Parents are always welcome on campus between 8am-8.20am to drop their children off and to catch up with teachers and friends. Can we please ask that when the bell rings at 8.20am parents leave the campus so that the children can line up for class and be ready for learning. It is tempting to watch the children lining up, wave them off and continue talking, but this is creating some anxiety for children and prolonging the morning separation for some students.

To help this separation time in the mornings, our counsellors have put together some tips and resources to help you and your child navigate the process.

Supporting a Sense of Belonging

Children have a strong need for affiliation and a strong sense of belonging after separating from their caregivers. When separating, children instinctively seek their own protection and membership by forming close attachments to their peer group. It is essential to encourage positive interactions and bonding with new peers to promote resilience and restore a sense of belonging. Remind the children of their support resources, such as their teacher, and encourage children to seek out new experiences and form positive relationships with others.

Separation anxiety is a common experience for many children, and parents can be faced with many challenges when it comes to dropping off their little ones at school. It can be tough for both the child and the parent to manage the feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. However, with patience, understanding, and some helpful strategies, you can make the separation process smoother.

Establish a Consistent Routine

Children thrive on routine and predictability. Establish a consistent morning routine that includes comforting activities such as cuddling, reading a favourite book, or singing a familiar song before heading to school. Consistency provides a sense of security for your child and can ease their anxiety about leaving you. Pack bags the night before to minimise morning chaos.

Stay Calm, Positive and Confident

Children possess remarkable perceptiveness and can easily sense your emotions. Therefore, it’s essential to remain calm and composed during drop-off, even if you’re grappling with your own anxiety. Offer gentle words of encouragement and remind your child about the enjoyable activities awaiting them at school. Your reassuring presence can significantly ease their anxiety. When providing explanations, strive to be concise and straightforward, avoiding a tone that might sound pleading.

Create a Goodbye Ritual

Establish a special goodbye ritual that provides comfort and reassurance to your child. It could be a secret handshake, a special hug, or a kiss on the hand. Whatever ritual you choose, make it meaningful and consistent. It signals to your child that you are leaving but will return later.

Resist the Urge to Hover

While it’s natural to want to linger and make sure your child is okay, hovering can prolong the separation process and increase your child’s anxiety. Once you’ve said goodbye, trust that your child is in capable hands and resist the urge to constantly check in. Short and sweet is key!

Acknowledge Your Own Feelings

Separation anxiety isn’t just challenging for children; it can also trigger strong emotions in parents. It’s okay to feel guilty or worried about leaving your child but remember that separation is a normal and healthy part of their development. If you’re struggling with your own emotions, seek help and try not to let it interfere with your child’s morning drop-off.

Picture Books

They can serve as a valuable tool for initiating conversations with your child about their fears and concerns. Engaging stories and colourful illustrations provide a non-threatening platform for addressing difficult topics. For a curated list of picture books designed to help children navigate their fears and anxieties, you can explore the following link. In addition to this, we’d recommend ‘The Invisible String’ by Patrice Kart, and ‘The Kissing Hand’ by Audrey Penn.

Study Centre – Take Off!

Our Year 7 to 11 Study Centre commenced this week and students across the Secondary School have taken all opportunities to make effective use of the space for study purposes. Below is an image of a range of students utilising the Library Space at lunchtime on Wednesday. As well as homelearning activities, students also played chess and engaged in wide reading. We welcomed a new Library Administrator to the Roseby Library Team this week. Dr Lauren Alice, trained teacher and literary researcher, will be working 11.00am to 7.00pm Monday to Thursday, overseeing and supporting Year 7 to 11 students with study and assessment preparation.

Anglican Student Leader Commissioning

Our Year 12 Portfolio Captains attended the Anglican Schools Student Leader Commissioning last Thursday 8 February at St Andrews Cathedral.  They were accompanied by Mr Corcoran, Ms Philips (Chaplain), and Ms Ynson (Year Advisor).

Activities Fair

We held our Activities fair last Thursday.  It was wonderful to see so many students signing up for our club offerings this year.

All the clubs are up and running this week.  Information about clubs can be found on Redlands Pulse (Secondary School Cocurricular) and news and announcements will be updated on the Pulse page throughout the year. The clubs are a great opportunity for students to discover a passion area, develop skills of collaboration across age ranges and build relationships skills.

International Women’s Day

Our Year 12 student leaders led their first Assembly with Stage 6 this Tuesday. As well as a bit of fun with some amusing announcements (Conor Petersen and Anderson Boris told some dad-level jokes about the environment and our new bees), they also led a panel ahead of larger International Women’s Day festivities. A range of students and staff members expressed their appreciation of IWD, talked about what this year’s theme meant to them and shared their experiences of equity and advantage. Kudos to Antonia Morgan and Will Algar who have organised the panels and prepared the speakers.

A team of amazing Redlands women have been planning for an exciting IWD Event this year and we strongly encourage you to come along to this ticketed breakfast event.

Community Update

With the introduction of our Year 9 Experiential Program in 2025 and our Midawarr Program (through Culture College) moving to Year 10 from 2025, a reminder that an exclusive opportunity exists for our parent and alumni community to experience this unique and extraordinary program through a Redlands Midawarr Arnhem Land Trip in May this year.

Our partnership with Culture College inspires and educates through the sharing of unique experiences and the celebration of traditional Yolŋu knowledge systems and customs, all in an authentic Yolŋu setting in northeast Arnhem Land. First Nations educators from along the East Coast also teach the diversity of their cultures and customs alongside Yolŋu, threading the stories together.

This is quite literally a once in a lifetime opportunity to deeply explore miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling at Gulkula, the site of the annual Garma Festival. The trip is planned for Sunday 26 to Thursday 30 May 2024 and includes:

  • Camping accommodation, tents with single camp stretcher (1 or 2 per tent)
  • Daily breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Morning and afternoon tea breaks (light snacks)
  • Transport in Nhulunbuy and surrounding areas
  • ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony
  • Visit to Buku – Yirrkala Arts Centre and Museum
  • Sharing of knowledge with local Yolŋu educators
  • Proceeds will contribute to a job pathways program to help provide training, further education and job opportunities to Yolŋu educators within the program
  • Round-trip economy airfare from Sydney to Cairns return on Virgin Australia
  • Round-trip economy airfare from Cairns to Gove return on Air North
  • Airport transfers to and from Gove airport and Gulkula

We are delighted to announce that our Principal, Mr Sean Corcoran will be joining our parents and alumni on this trip, sharing this unique experience with our community. Gather a group of friends, a friend or join the wider group for this once in a lifetime experience not to be missed. Places on this exclusive trip can now be reserved by competing a booking form which can be accessed here.

We look forward to welcoming parents and carers tomorrow evening at our annual our Twilight event.  With the weather looking wet tomorrow evening we have relocated the event indoors to Dunnet Hall on our Junior Campus. Our Twilight event provides a wonderful opportunity for our new families to connect with our school community and tickets are still available here. For information on upcoming (and past) event and group activities please visit the RPFA section of Note Day.

SunSmart Hat

A quick reminder that the new SunSmart hat, which replaces the old cap, will be compulsory from 4 March. The Uniform Shop has plenty of these items in stock. On another uniform matter, ties are now optional with the old school uniform during the uniform transition phase. Please note that this option only applies for students across the Junior Campus and not at the Secondary School.

From the Principal

In recent weeks I imagine many of you have seen and heard much of the debate and discussion in the media about single sex education and coeducation. At Redlands we have been a proudly coeducational school for the past 46 years – so coeducation is just another part of our DNA. We are also a “truly” coeducational school with a 50/50 split of boys and girls across our over 1800 students from P-12. (At last count we had 3 more boys than girls enrolled at the School.)

Personally, I am supportive of a wide range of schooling options so that families can find the “best fit” school for their children, whether that be single sex or coeducational; independent or government; denominational or non-denominational; small or large; urban or rural. The most important thing is that families are able to find a school that aligns with their values and the values of their children, and that provides an opportunity for their child to discover their passions and be able to flourish.

Growing up in the United States, coeducation was the norm and I attended a coeducational school myself, so I experienced firsthand the academic, pastoral and social benefits of all genders learning, playing, socialising, leading and growing up together.

Pleasingly, I see these same benefits in our coeducational environment at Redlands.

Diversity and inclusivity are two key tenets of our Mission and a coeducational learning environment allows students to be exposed to a much wider range of viewpoints, insights and perspectives from which they can learn and grow.

In my first year as Head of Secondary School in 2017, one of our female Year 12 student leaders, Charlie Rogers, was speaking to incoming Year 7 students and their families about the transition into Secondary School. When one of the parents asked this student about the benefits of coeducation, she replied, “The last time I looked the world was coed. And if school is supposed to best prepare you for the world ahead, then won’t you be best prepared for the future, learning in a coed school?”

Charlie’s words still resonate with me as I believe our coeducational environment allows Redlands to achieve our Vision – for boys and girls to achieve life readiness – by being educated in an environment that will best reflect the world they will live in.

Last year we informed our community about a truly unique opportunity for parents, carers and alumni to visit Arnhem Land for a Redlands cultural immersion experience with the Yolŋu community from Sunday 26 – Thursday 30 May 2024. We have been developing our relationship with the Yolŋu community for the past 6 years with service learning trips and the Year 9 Midawarr program. We see this as a further opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the Yolŋu community, and I am pleased to be able to join parents and alumni on this trip and share this experience with them. There are still places available which can be booked by following the below link:

I look forward to seeing many parents and carers at our Twilight welcome event tomorrow evening. It is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together in celebration at the beginning of the year for our 140th anniversary as a school. Due to the inclement weather, this event has now been moved to Dunnet Hall on the Junior Campus, Allister St entrance. Please note that stilettos are not to be worn in Dunnet Hall.

Foundation

Thank you sincerely to all Redlands families, alumni, students and staff who supported us last year in our fundraising efforts. With everyone’s support we raised $864,000, which included $200,000 direct donations to the Scholarship Fund and $148,000 direct donations to the Building Fund. The remaining revenue came from fundraising events focused on these strategic priorities.

With everyone’s help we were able to offer an additional means-tested scholarship named after Dr Sue Morey AM to a Year 7 student who commenced Redlands this year. The refurbishment of our historic Liggins Building was achieved, and a heritage wall was installed showcasing Redlands rich history for guests and staff to enjoy.

This year we ask for your support in raising funds towards the Redlands High Country Campus expansion as well as means-tested scholarship program named after Coralie Amos OAM. For more information, please contact me directly or visit the Redlands Foundation page.

Why did you decide to join RPFA?

Our son, Jack, started Redlands House shortly after we arrived in Sydney from America. Volunteering as a Class Parent – knowing zero about the educational system in Australia or even where to get a good coffee – was a great way to learn about the School and most importantly get to know the Redlands community.  I continued as a Class Parent for several years and then moved into the Parent Contact Group Coordinator role for Prep School.  Joining the RPFA was a natural leadership progression and has been a great way to learn about other parts of the School, especially on the other side of Military Road, as well as make friends with families of different ages and experiences.

If you could trade places with your children for a day what would you most want to experience?

My children like to go on bush walks and explore nature.  While doing so, they often stop to make a fort or find some other creative play which envelops their whole sense of the world around them.  I would love to be able to spend time in their shoes, totally consumed by the make–believe play of the moment, without a concern about the time, tasks or temporal demands we adults are always managing.

The Week in Pictures

Check out all the photos from Week 2. We just love seeing our community come together and thrive. It really is what sets Redlands apart! Keep the momentum going and the pictures flowing. It’s great to see all the class get togethers being organised, and to all the Class Parent and Year Coordinators who have volunteered this year, you’re doing wonderful work. A heartfelt thank you on behalf of all parents.

Another great human and hound turn out for the Mosman to Cremorne Point walk this week!

All smiles at the Year 11 coffee meet up earlier this week. Thanks to the Year Coords for organising.

The sun was shining on the Year 7 family picnic at Clontarf on the weekend. Thanks to the volunteer Year Coords for bring everyone together!

This looks like a super time! Last weekend 75 Year 12 mums made their way to the Hunter to celebrate the start of Year 12!!!It was a fun filled weekend packed with lots of laughs, wine tasting and a dinner on Saturday night. This marks year two and maybe the start of a wonderful tradition.

Do you have pictures of parent / family get-togethers you want to share?

Please send them to RPFA Note Day.

Hope to see you at the Twilight Drinks this Friday night 6pm.

From the Chaplains

On the Senior Campus, we celebrated Pancake Tuesday with gusto. The Year 11IB students and other helpers from Lumos – the campus Christian Group, made and distributed fresh pancakes in the Liggins Quad. The food was gratefully appreciated and gave students an opportunity to reflect on the significance of the upcoming season of Lent.

A group of staff joined together to share at a special prayer breakfast and there were more pancakes on hand for the Redlands Community Prayer time at St Peters. For many Christians, the season of Lent is a time of reflection and renewal; for refocusing on God’s love for us, and of broadening the reach of our compassion and care for others.

A prayer for Lent

Merciful God,

As Lent begins, we reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Grant us strength to follow his example, to deepen our faith and draw us closer to Him. Guide us in prayer, and reflection and compassion toward others. May we brightly shine the light of Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Year 9 and 10 Japanese Global Connection Day with Japanese High School in Karuizawa

Reflections from Year 9 student, Lucy Goodsall

On Tuesday 13 February, we had an online Zoom session with Kazekoshi High School in Japan. We were extremely excited for this new experience and to learn about their school life and hobbies. To prepare, we revised content from the last two years to be able to easily say a self-introduction and have smooth communication in Japanese. Furthermore, it was such an authentic experience! It was nerve-wracking speaking in Japanese with Japanese students. However, as the conversations progressed, it became much easier. Learning about the lives and hobbies of the Kazekoshi students and the cultural differences and similarities was an awesome experience. We also enjoyed watching a Japanese calligraphy demonstration done using traditional Japanese materials. Overall, this was an enjoyable experience, and we are looking forward to our follow up session in few weeks time.

Winter Sport Registrations

As students are choosing their Winter Sport commitments, for those students completing a non-rep sport this season, Mr Cameron Ellis offered some research for consideration. This has been shared with students via an email from Mr Ellis. Recently, there was an article in The Sydney Morning Herald titled Active children do better at school. So how do we keep teens in sport?

This article highlights a few key benefits to organised sport, particularly as a Year 12 student:

  • Stress Relief – Physical activity is a stress buster. Engaging in sport can alleviate tension, boost your mood and enhance your ability to focus.
  • Routine – sports assists with maintaining a consistent routine which can provide a sense of stability. Regular sport can offer a reprieve from the intensity of academic work.
  • Connection and Camaraderie – Whether it is a friendly game or team competition, participation in sport allows you to connect with others, providing a much needed break from the solitary nature of examination preparation.

The points above are strong considerations for students as they look to balance and manage their weekly commitments in order to support a healthy, productive and efficient use of their time and being this year.

“Your Mind is Your Biggest Asset and Best Tool”

The buzz from the Study Centre over these last few weeks is evidence of how seriously our Yr 12 cohort is taking this last year of school. They have always been studious. However, the increase this year in focus, in the desire for assistance, the willingness to ask for help and the utilisation of their resources has been impressive to date.

Adding on to a few key points shared with students yesterday in the HSC Core Session around note-taking and time-management, a few additional points were highlighted today from a Forbes article linked here and summarised below:

While every student will have a different path post the HSC or IB, these tips and habits hold true for persevering through any challenging period. With so many students studying long hours, building up their own expectations  and then feeling disappointment when things don’t always go to plan, a major take-away we discussed was around knowing what resources to access and having a plan in place to access those resources assists in building self-confidence in one’s ability to cope with academic stress. While this article focuses on academics, these tips can be applied to many more aspects of life.

Year 11

NSW Interschool Model UN Conference

Last Saturday, Sophie Yu and Eleanor Blankenstein teamed up with students from 21 schools across the Greater Sydney Area to engage in the Model United Nations Conference at Pymble Ladies College. As representatives of Spain, they passionately debated the issue of global cooperation in safeguarding journalists and NGO workers around the world. Their dedication was rewarded with the Best Delegation award from the SOCHUM (Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee). Congratulations to Sophie and Eleanor for their outstanding work!

When Elenor and I first came into the Model UN hall, we were nervous to say the least – the sight of nearly 100 professional-looking delegates with binders full of research notes made us, first time participants, feel incredibly unprepared. Yet, it turned out that we had been nervous about nothing at all. Two SOCHUM (Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Committee) conferences and a General Assembly went by in no time as we debated global issues from the Ethiopian Tigray Crisis to climate refugees in the Pacific islands and got to know some of the most passionate and knowledgeable people I’ve ever met. Not to mention, it was far from the serious affair I’d imagined – the day was filled with humour, a Gossip Box, and some of the most incredible argument comebacks I’ve heard that made the entire Assembly erupt into applause. Everyone was so kind and supportive; we both learnt and improved so much. To our surprise, we even managed to win SOCHUM Best Delegation at the end of the day.

Year 10

This Week in Year 10

On Monday during Tutor time, we began our Coaching Conversations between students and their Tutor. During these conversations, students are shown their iGrow tree, where their data in terms of academic achievement, effort, cocurricular involvement and general school behaviour and attendance are visible to students. Guided by the students, Tutors carefully move through this information, allowing the student to process and reflect on it, before setting themselves goals for growth for the Term 1. This term, we encouraged students to set at least one academic goal and one growth goal, and they have been thoughtful, with their eye on the journey towards their Senior academic studies, as they make this goal.

Here are some of the goals articulated by Yr 10 students so far:

  • I would like to focus on adapting my study schedule as I progress throughout the term so it fits better with my cocurricular activities and home learning tasks. I will constantly make edits and updates to my calendar so it actually fits my daily routine and becomes more useful.
  • I would like to focus on writing this term because my English marks aren’t where I want them. I will access the feedback I have gotten in previous tasks and ask for more feedback from the teacher in future tasks.
  • I would like to focus on challenging and extending myself in my classes in preparation for the HSC or IB. I will seek extra feedback from my teachers on my extension work.
  • My goal is to expand my social circle and make new connections by actively participating in cocurricular activities, sports, and clubs that interest me. I aim to step out of my comfort zone and engage in new experiences to enrich my Year 10 journey. Additionally, I am committed to staying organised with my school work by completing homework on time, maintaining a schedule and going above and beyond what is expected in preparation for classes.

After moving through a full rotation of our new timetables, Yr 10 are certainly back as part of the Redlands landscape. On Thursday, we held a Chapel session where students learned more about the foundations of Valentine’s Day and explored what the Bible says about love. This gave us time to ponder how to bring ‘love’ to our own lives and the people around us in meaningful, caring ways. Chapel is a lovely opportunity for students to reflect and meditate on their feelings, a moment of respite in a busy day.

Year 9

Coaching Conversations and Academic Planning Week

Throughout the course of the week, Year 9 students have been having a one-to-one meeting with their Tutor to review their progress throught the use of iGrow data. From this they are setting themselves targets in the short and long term for the year. Students’ iGrow Trees track multiple dimensions of their schooling over time including academics, ATLs, participation to cocurricular activities, behaviour metrics and attendance. From this they can identify trends and develop a focus for the term ahead.

It has been a pleasure to see students working closely with their Tutors this week to develop goals specific to their own growth needs and I highly encourage you to discuss this with your student so that you are also able to help support their term focus.

While not engaged with in conversation with their Tutors, student have also been organising themselves for the term ahead by preparing planners which include:

  • 2024 Assessment Tasks due dates (available on the Year 9 Pulse Page)
  • Key Events e.g. musical, sports finals, exams, term dates etc.
  • Weekly Schedule including cocurricular commitments, basic study schedule etc.

As the demands of Stage 5 progress this form of planning at the beginning of each term is a crucial component to study success, especially planning for how to achieve the recommended 8-9 hours of home learning per week.

Please see a sample planner and some recommended apps that several of our students are currently using to keep themselves organised.

Year 8

Yr 8 are Right Back into their School Routine

After moving through a full rotation of our new timetables, Yr 8 are certainly back into ‘the groove of things’, engaging in their lessons, finding new clubs to enjoy, meeting new people and preparing to get involved in their new Winter sports. On Monday, we held our first Chapel session of the year where students learned more about the foundations of Valentine’s Day and explored what the Bible says about love. Mackenzie confidently read out to the cohort one of the most well-known descriptions of love in literature:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

It gave us time to ponder how to bring ‘love’ to our own lives and the people around us in meaningful, caring ways.

On Tuesday, we began our Coaching Conversations between students and their Tutor. During these conversations, students are shown their iGrow tree, where their data in terms of academic achievement, effort, cocurricular involvement and general school behaviour and attendance are visible to students. Tutors carefully take students through such information, allowing them to process and reflect on it, before setting themselves goals for growth for the Term 1. This term, we encouraged students to set at least one academic goal and one growth goal, and they have been mature and thoughtful in engaging with this process.

Some of the thoughtful goals to arise thus far have been:

  • I would like to improve my extended responses and focus in English. I will achieve this by asking my teacher for a scaffold and write this in the margins whenever I am writing an extended response.
  • I would like to improve my performance in Maths, particularly focusing on Algebra. I feel focused in it but require more practice to fully grasp it. To achieve this, I will complete at least 3 extra practice questions every time I do maths home learning, to keep it fresh.
  • I would like to be more consistently focused in class and listen to what the teacher is talking about because sometimes I forget what the instructions are.
  • I would like to join more cocurricular activities this year with some friends and to meet new friends.
  • I would like to practice meditating more, particularly for Football as it will help me forget about stress.
  • My goal is to balance school, sport and as well as balancing free time to relax or hang out with friends and I’m doing this by planning ahead.

On Wednesday, there were a few jitters and a bit of nervous tension as students all proceeded to Redlands Hall to get their profile photos taken. How do I look? Is my hair okay? Is my tie done neatly? Can I borrow your jacket? Such questions bounced around the Hall as students patiently waited to put on their best smiles in front of the camera. I was impressed with Yr 8’s behaviour as they moved through the process smoothly, with a minimum of fuss.

If students were absent for their portrait photo, they can get it taken on the make-up date on March 1.

Today, Yr 8 students were engaged by cyber safety educators, ySafe, in considering their online presence and encouraged to consider how to operate safely in the online world. The presentation, ‘Mastering your Digital World’, reaffirmed key messages that were also explored last year based around protecting oneself from online abuse, predatory behaviour and knowing where to seek support if concerned by any online interactions. Students will consolidate this knowledge with further conversations and activities during Tutor this term.

Student Achievement – UNSW Gifted Students Program:

Congratulations to the following students who were invited to participate in the UNSW GERRIC Gifted Students Program held during the recent break on 10-12 January. To qualify for the program, students needed to show evidence of exceptional academic ability, achievement and critical thinking skills. They participated in university-style seminars and dealt with advanced content pitched at two years above their grade level. They also toured the science labs and observatory, as well as engaged in projects centred around cosmology, theories of relativity, myths about the lost city of Atlantis, the science of the brain and the practice of logical thinking.

Well done to all the Yr 8 students who were in attendance: Lachlan Carter, Lucas Gai, Thys Hulsbosch, Aimee Kang, Olivia Law, Aaron Oh and Gabrielle Thomas

Year 7

What a Week for Yr 7

This week has been filled with excitement as we have been getting our students ready for camp. Camp offers a fantastic chance for students to enjoy nature, get active, and make new friends. While it might feel a bit overwhelming at first, we know that facing new challenges builds resilience in our young people. Plus, the memories they’ll create during this time will last a lifetime. As we put the final touches on our preparations, we are excited for the adventures that lie ahead in the great outdoors.

Assembly

As a testament to our commitment to fostering a positive school culture, we took a moment to honor those students who have exemplified the core Redlands Values. The Leadership Rhino Award is for a student who has demonstrated courage, strength and inspirational leadership along with our core values which include Respect, Fairness, Responsibility, Honesty, Moral Courage and Compassion. A Rhino Award recipient fearlessly leads by example and demonstrates the heart of a rhino in their commitment to our school.

Well done to the following students:

  • Millicent Kroon
  • Owen Beck
  • Ekam Sethi
  • Isaac Bishop
  • Raphael Beasley
  • Julian Lundberg

Y-Safe

This week we were fortunate enough to listen to a YSafe presentation with our friends in Yr 8. YSafe stands as a dedicated advocate for children’s online safety, recognising the critical need to create a secure digital environment for our youth. In an era dominated by technology, it’s vital to educate children about the potential risks and equip them with the tools to navigate the online world responsibly. YSafe plays a pivotal role in promoting awareness, providing resources, and collaborating with parents and educators to ensure that children can harness the benefits of the internet while staying protected from potential dangers. In a world increasingly connected through screens, YSafe emphasises the importance of instilling digital literacy and fostering a culture of responsible online behavior for the wellbeing of our children.

For additional information, here is an article about Online Safety Basics written by the E-Safety Commissioner.

Junior Sport

On what proved to be four seasons in one day  last Saturday, our Representative Sports Program commenced in earnest, with all scheduled matches unfolding as planned. It marked the initiation of our newest students’ journey into representative sports within the Junior School, as both our Year 3 and Year 4 teams took part in round (1) of Girls Football. Meanwhile, our Year 5 and Year 6 Tennis team showcased their prowess in both singles and doubles matches, but unfortunately went down to a stronger Knox side. The mixed Basketball teams in Year 5 and Year 6 exhibited a promising start to their season, winning five out of five matches played away at Newington. Our Touch Football performed well in the wet and slippery conditions going down to Trinity at Cooke Park.

Looking at administrative matters arising from Saturday’s sports activities, we highlight the following points:

  • Please review the summer sport team lists on Wednesday evening for any team movements.
  • Players must be attired in full Redlands apparel and have their water bottles placed beside the coach’s kit bag prior to the commencement of matches.
  • Players are expected to meet with their respective coaches 30 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  • The final home match scheduled in Dunnet Hall requires that team and families to assist in post-game pack up.
  • Players are encouraged to express gratitude to their coaches at the conclusion of each match and to extend three cheers to the opposing team.

As communicated previously, the scheduling of Saturday morning matches for coaches, parents and staff will be updated and available via your Redlands App. This feature enables users to filter the schedule by sport and team, ensuring timely access to any alterations in match times or venues.

Given the fluid nature of sports schedules, we refrain from distributing email updates and urge recipients not to print out the schedule due to potential changes.

Swimming Carnival – Family Information Package

This package was shared with families on Tuesday. Please take the time to review the information contained within as it will cover all areas of the carnival for your child from drop off to what events are on offer to how they can be collected.

Redlands Pulse Orientation and Navigation Video

Our intranet, Redlands Pulse, is the first port of call for all Junior School Sport related enquiries. A video has been produced to show you how to navigate through Pulse. You can view this short video here.

Redlands Pulse – The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

Sport Information Booklet

For all Sport information regarding what sports we offer when, how to navigate our documents, as well as information on Uniforms and Carnivals please refer to our Parent Information Booklet on Pulse.

Term 1 Upcoming Dates

Sport Calendar

The sport calendar for Term 1 onwards is available online on Junior School Sport Page. You can also view it by selecting here; 2024 JS Sport Calendar

Representative Sports- Saturday Morning Match Wear

Just a reminder for all families who represent Redlands in Saturday sport only Redlands Sports Uniforms and match day kit is to be worn. Each family should own either a school tracksuit and or a fleece that they can wear over the top of their playing kit if they are cold. If your child feels the cold they may play in their fleece if their match allows it.

Any incorrect item will now be confiscated as all students have received the same message.

Wednesday Sport Inability to Train

If your child has an injury that prevents them from training, please send through an email to Junior Sport juniorsport@redlands.nsw.edu.au requesting they ‘sit out’ of training for that particular session. We can then forward this to the relevant external coaching staff. Where applicable please include when they can return to normal training, so coaches are aware of this. That way coaching staff are aware of an injury that prevents them from participating at the venue but also allows us to be aware of periods where they are medically required to ‘sit out’.

Representative Sport Student Absence

If students are absent on match day, parents are required to complete this online absence form. This will allow your responses to be passed on electronically to your child’s coach efficiently and at short notice. The Student Absence link can also be found on the Junior School Sport Page on Redlands Pulse.

Please don’t hesitate to view our Sport Information page on Redlands Pulse if you have any questions pertaining to Sport.

Secondary Sport

Talent provides a foundation for success, but it is attitude and work ethic that propel individuals from being good to achieving greatness. While innate abilities might set someone apart initially, they alone cannot sustain success in the long run. A positive attitude fosters resilience, enabling individuals to navigate challenges and setbacks with determination. Work ethic, characterised by dedication and consistent effort transforms raw talent into tangible achievements through persistent practice and continuous improvement. Unlike talent, which may plateau without cultivation, a strong work ethic ensures a constant pursuit of excellence. Moreover, a positive attitude and strong work ethic contribute to effective collaboration, enhancing interpersonal relationships and creating a conducive environment for growth. In essence, talent is the starting point, but it is one’s attitude and work ethic that drive the journey from good to great.

Notable examples of athletes who achieved greatness through work ethic is Michael Jordan. While undoubtedly talented, Jordan’s legendary basketball career was marked by an unparalleled commitment to training and improvement. His relentless work ethic, coupled with a fierce competitive spirit, allowed him to continually elevate his game and lead the Chicago Bulls to multiple NBA championships.

Another example is Cristiano Ronaldo in soccer. Ronaldo’s success is not solely attributed to natural talent but is significantly shaped by his extraordinary work ethic. His dedication to training, both on and off the field, has been a driving force behind his consistent performance at the highest level for over a decade, earning him numerous individual awards and team accomplishments.

These examples highlight how a strong work ethic, combined with talent, can propel athletes to unprecedented levels of success, showcasing that sustained greatness often emerges from dedication and relentless effort

‘Talent might make you good, but it’s your attitude and work ethic that will make you great’.

Rowing

Last weekend was the NSW State Championships, a rowing regatta that attracts schools and clubs from across Australia and even overseas, providing some significant competition making it more of a “Nationals” as opposed to States.

Across the weekend we had some encouraging results but no more so than our Under 17 Men’s Quad Scull crews. In separate heats they finished in 1st and 2nd place, progressing them through to the final. In the final the 1st crew raced with great composure and maturity to win the event, with our 2nd crew finishing in 6th place (out of 8).

The winning crew is:

  • Oscar Pearce (Yr10)
  • Angus McInnes (Yr11)
  • Archie Kerr (Yr10)
  • Thomas Hooper (Yr10)
  • COX: Henry Preece (Yr10)

For a program of our size, this is a big achievement and also a first for my time at the School. We still have some key regattas ahead of us in the next few weeks (ACT Champs, ACT Head of the Lake, NSW Boys Head of the River and NSW Girls Head of the River) for the boys but this is hopefully a good indication of their potential.

Drama

Year 8 Elective Drama

We have loved getting to know our new Year 8 elective Drama students this term. The start of our Year 8 course is all about getting students comfortable with working with a mix of people and building confidence to embrace their creative side. After two weeks it is clear this Year 8 cohort have a great sense of humour, hold strong bonds with each other and are always up for giving performance activities ago. Here is a reflection on the course from one of our Year 8 Drama students, Fergus Kerr:

The beginning of Year 8 has been so exciting, especially with my new favourite addition to my timetable – Year 8 Drama. This week we have had so much fun learning what makes a good improvised scene and what are the fundamental Elements of Drama. I think that this class is something that everyone should try out as it’s so fun getting to commit to a character and giving it a go. This class also perfectly ties into my extra-curricular Drama classes as I have noticed that this class is solidifying all the skills and techniques that I had subconsciously learnt from these after school classes.

Theatre Captain 2024

On Monday 12 February students from Year 12 HSC and IB Drama and Theatre participated in a Biomechanics workshop based on the approaches to acting of Vsevolod Meyerhold. The workshop was conducted by physical theatre practitioner Tim Walker, a NIDA graduate who specialised in Physical Theatre, who works as an actor, director and performer with Chopt Logic Physical Theatre Company. Many of us knew Tim from directing the play last year, but what we didn’t know was his impressive knowledge and capability of biomechanical physical theatre.

This topic was a new side of physical theatre we hadn’t yet explored. Over two hours we learnt the basics of Meyerhold’s theories. Exploring the tools of the biomechanical actor: precision, balance, coordination, efficiency, rhythm, expressiveness, responsiveness, playfulness, and discipline.

I think this workshop really challenged everyone to take risks and push themselves out of their comfort zone(s) and everyone really enjoyed this. Unpacking the “specificity” within these techniques we engaged with the basics, Otkaz -the impulse, Posil, the journey, and Tochka, the arrival. We were taught that these principles form the basis of every movement.

I found this a fascinating style to physicalise as it was so different to other physical theatre we had studied previously. This workshop’s focus on ensemble work was very particular and required a very high level of focus. We collectively used levels of tension and release, creating shapes and lifts that were the building blocks of physical theatre.

Before this term, I didn’t really enjoy learning about physical theatre, however, the two workshops we have explored, Jacques Le Coq and Meyerhold, have both really pushed my engagement, challenged my thinking and exposed me to the many other interesting concepts which I now understand can be applied to forms of collaborative projects, approaches to acting and the creation of theatre.

Drama and Theatre Extra Subjects Program

Our extra subjects Drama and Musical Theatre classes launched with a creative bang this week. It was so wonderful to see so many new faces, as well as the familiar ones who have been dedicated to the program since kindergarten.

We are also very excited to announce this year’s Junior Musical will be…. Seussical the Musical. Yr 5 and 6 are very excited to begin working on this! We can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Housekeeping: We kindly ask that all parents and guardians be on time to the extra subject pick up locations after the classes finish.

You will find the various finishing times and locations for Junior school pick up on the Redlands Drama and Theatre pulse page. If you are running late your children(s) will be taken to OOSH and you will be charged accordingly.

If you have any questions, please email:

Music

Ensembles

It’s great to hear the excitement through the corridors as the first Band, Strings and Choir rehearsals have begun. Our ensembles are energised and ready to go for a fun and rewarding year ahead!

One of the most rewarding pay-offs for any young musician is when they can join their music-making with the music-making of their peers. Time spent practising scales and parts in disciplined solitude at home, suddenly finds rich reward when their part is layered with another part and another part – creating something bigger and far more exciting than we can ever achieve on our own. Important life lessons are imbued in the ensemble context, and it’s no wonder that wellbeing benefits are proven and extensive, as we learn to take musical risks in a shared way – supporting, stretching and succeeding alongside our peers.

We are so fortunate at Redlands to have such support for the Arts, with rich and diverse opportunities for our students to develop themselves creatively. This week saw beaming smiles on faces, and a fresh, chatty buzz in corridors and classrooms as our ensembles from P-12 launched for 2024.

We’re planning and discussing all our big shows and festivals for 2024 in rehearsal, and can’t wait to share our Music with our community.

Instrumental Competition Auditions – Closing Tomorrow!
