Yearly Examinations
Students have approached this week with preparedness and a positive mindset. Yr 10 have arrived on time each morning and started examinations with focus. Our Pastoral Care Program includes several lessons aimed at developing self-management: regulating emotions to handle stress, control impulses, and motivating oneself to persevere in overcoming obstacles, setting and monitoring progress toward the achievement of personal and academic goals; expressing emotions appropriately. This week provides an opportunity for students to continue building and reflecting on these capabilities. Well done to all students as they navigate this challenging week.
Harbour Cruise Info and Appropriate Dress
Thank you for purchasing tickets for the Harbour Cruise next Friday 4 November with Captain Cook Cruises. Students are all very excited and seem to be looking forward to this evening event together.
Thank you for your assistance in reminding students that this is a school-sponsored event. Therefore, the same rules and expectations that apply at school will apply during this event. The following items have been explained to students and a few key messages are listed below:
- Students are to arrive at Darling Harbour Wharf 1, King Street Wharf, no later than 6:45pm to ensure we can close boarding and begin the evening’s festivities at 7pm. Additional time does need to be allocated for security checks run by Captain Cook.
- Students are meant to wear formal or semi-formal attire (ie. suits, pantsuits, long dresses, midi-length dresses) and appropriate footwear to be comfortable walking around on a boat. A spare pair of flat shoes was recommended for any students planning to wear heels throughout the evening. Students are not able to take shoes off and walk around barefoot.
- While many outfits are currently fashionable with cut-outs or portions of sheer fabric, students have been reminded that their outfit choices should be appropriate for a school event and we want everyone to be comfortable throughout the evening. On the off chance that a student does arrive with inappropriate attire, the student will be asked to put something over their outfit to cover appropriately.
We are looking forward to properly congratulating and celebrating Yr 10 for their incredible efforts, focus, engagement and leadership demonstrated this year.
Tomorrow Woman 2 November
Next Wednesday, we look forward to welcoming Tomorrow Woman to work with our Yr 10 students who identify as she/her. The Her Code workshop aims to question the confines and expectations of modern womanhood. Amidst a barrage of confusing messages coming from all angles, depression, anxiety, negative body image and low self-esteem are on the rise in women. Tomorrow Woman creates a space for women to practise their innate voice and learn to rise above social pressures and expectations, valuing being brave over being perfect.
Run by an experienced facilitator from Tomorrow Woman, this signature two-hour experiential workshop creates a safe non-judgmental space in the virtual world to explore tricky topics in a relatable way and get to the heart of issues that women are facing every day. They train the skills that enable women to express their authentic selves beyond the room and beyond the screen and live their own version of a woman of tomorrow. Participants leave the space with strengthened resilience, self-confidence and connectedness to their peer group.
Calculator Requirements for Maths Yr 11 and Yr 12
After the Yearly Examinations, Yr 10 Mathematics classes will be rearranged into Yr 11 courses so students can start to see the level of Mathematics and pace of the course students have chosen. The HSC or IB required calculator will be used immediately to support students in learning how to use it as soon as possible. Teachers will be showing students how to use these in their classes.
All HSC students will require an approved calculator for their classes. While there are several approved calculators on the list provided by NSW Education Standards Authority, the most commonly used one by our students and used by our teachers is the fx-82AU, fx-82AU PLUS or fx-82AU PLUS II 1st or 2nd Edition. This is the same calculator required for Yrs 7-10 and most students already own this calculator. If students have lost, broken or misplaced their calculator, they are encouraged to purchase a new one to use for the remainder of this year. They must have it with them each day for their Mathematics class.
All IB students will require a graphics calculator for both IB Maths courses AA and AI. Redlands uses the TI-nspire CXII. Redlands has connected with a supplier and students can purchase the GDC with the information below. The price is slightly discounted. Students need to order by Sunday 30 October 2022 to receive the calculator after camp Monday 14 November 2022.
The following document provides all the details on how to order the appropriate GDC.
If students choose to purchase their own TI-nspire GDC independently, please ensure students also have access to the software for student laptops as well. When purchasing a new GDC, this is included automatically. If you have any questions, please encourage students to speak with their Mathematics teacher or Assistant Head of Department, Mrs Libby Busch.
SAT Examinations
Redlands runs SAT examinations on campus for students applying to study in the US. Most US Universities are currently test-optional for admissions up to 2024, and some beyond that date. We therefore recommend to most students that there is no need to sit the SATs.
For those who wish to sit the SAT, Redlands will be running one examination date in 2023 on 6 May. Registrations are open now, so we recommend you register as soon as possible to secure a place. You must register directly with the College Board:
Please note that from 2023 SATs will be digital. The College Board is running information sessions which students can sign up to, to learn more about the digital SAT.
Other test dates are being run at various test centres if 6 May does not suit
View Here Yr 10 ICAS Science (updated)
The 2022 International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in Science is undertaken by over 400,000 students across Australia and the region and is a rigorous test of scientific thinking. Participation in the competition provides our students with excellent examination practice and an opportunity to see how they fare in competition with students of their own age from across the country.
Congratulations to the following competitors: Mischa Barac, Rafferty Heard, Sholto Mirrlees-Black, Henry Moate, Antonia Morgan, Conor Petersen and Jocelyn Wang.
Yr 10 Catch-Up Meningococcal ACWY Vaccinations Thursday 3 November 2022
Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.
The final clinic for 2022 will take place on Thursday 3 November. It will offer a catch-up opportunity for the Year 10 Meningococcal vaccine.
Parent Information Kits with consent cards have already been completed parents earlier in the year and there is no further administrative action required.
On the day of the vaccination clinic please ensure;
- your child eats breakfast
- your child brings a mask to wear whilst in the clinic
- your child does not attend school if they are unwell or if they have any symptoms of Covid
A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic as a physical card. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Parents can obtain this through the myGov website or the Express Plus Medicare Mobile app. (Anyone aged 14 years or older has to get their own statement).
