Issue 32 2022 Term 4 Week 3 - 27 Oct 2022

From The Principal

One of the privileges of my role is that I get invited to speak at various student assemblies and parent events, which provides the opportunity to highlight our core values and what is important to us at Redlands.

Student leadership and involvement is a key trait in our assemblies and I was delighted to hear the clear and thoughtful messages regarding behaviour, respect and responsibility that were shared by a group of Yr 5 students at the Junior School assembly this week. Mr Guha reinforced the theme with his encouragement to students to ‘pay it forward’, with the focus on sharing acts of kindness, that have the potential to cascade and multiply throughout the school community.

I shared the story of the ‘crabs in a fisherman’s bucket’ that could individually escape from the bucket; however, they continually reach out and pull each other down, whenever there is an attempt to break free. The metaphor was used to highlight the importance of valuing and supporting each individual person in our school community, to build each other up, celebrate other people’s success, without the need to pull each other down. I was pleased to know that none of our students had heard the phrase regarding the Australian ‘tall poppy syndrome’. May this long be the case at Redlands!

The 2023 Kindergarten Orientation morning on Wednesday was a wonderful occasion, during which we celebrated students getting prepared for their first full year of school, along with parents coming together as a group who will share many memorable moments together in the years ahead. It was an opportunity to highlight what is so special about Redlands. The focus on the individual and their ‘light shining’, the importance placed on the holistic development and wellbeing of students, the collaboration and professionalism of our staff and the sense of connection and community. A parent was recently describing to me what is special about the School. They summed it up in the way that their Secondary School children came home describing how they ‘feel’ and the way they looked forward to attending each Redlands each day.

This week our newly inducted Yr 12 Student Leaders led a Yr 7 and 8 assembly in the gym. Marli Prado led the Acknowledgement of Country, Sarah Kumpulainen shared a powerful and thoughtful prayer, and the Captains introduced themselves via an explosive video you can watch here, which was produced by Yr 12 students Oliver Noakes and Alex Tully. They then took Yr 7 and 8 through a fun quiz designed to enable students in the younger years to be better know their new leaders. Following on from this our SRC representatives from Years 7-10 shared their journey this year via another fun video which you can watch here.

IB FInal Examinations

The IB Final Examinations finally began for our Graduating Class of 2023 earlier this week, and it was great to feel the buzz of excitement around the students as they arrived for their first examinations in what is a very busy schedule over the next two weeks. From conversations with students, it appears most examinations have been well received so far and on behalf of all staff we would like to wish students every possible success in what will be their very last days at Redlands before they receive their final results in early January and transition to alumni.

Yr 7 and 10 Exams Update

Yrs 7 and 10 have conducted themselves well throughout their Examination Week. It has been wonderful to see students approaching their exams with such positivity and maturity. Students have generally had some periods of revision throughout the week which they have used wisely, putting to good use the study skills and strategies that they have learnt in the lead up to this period. Next week, as Yrs 7 and 10 engage in feedback and reflection, Yr 8 will commence their exams. We wish Yr 8 all the very best as we know how hard they have been preparing this week.

Talking About Teachers

There has been much written in the media recently about teacher shortages, although thankfully at Redlands, the impact has been minimal thus far. We are pleased to be able to continue to recruit high quality teachers for 2023, some of whom have commenced their employment with us this term, as part of our commitment to an effective handover process with outgoing staff and in the pursuit of relationship development with students. I look forward to introducing these new staff members to you early on in 2023.

Sometimes teachers are absent from school for a day or a longer period. Long Service Leave, extended leave or personal leave is available to teachers. Like all people, teachers get sick, have to stay home to look after an unwell child, or take an elderly parent to an appointment. Teachers do their best to be at school but time away is inevitable and expected – this is why teachers have leave available to them, which we encourage them to utilise, if necessary or beneficial. When our teachers are away, a substitute teacher (sometimes also called a cover teacher) steps in. Substitute teachers may also be utilised when permanent staff members are away at Camp or accessing a professional development opportunity.

At Redlands we are lucky to have a collective of dependable, high quality substitute teachers. They are valued by staff and students and are appreciated for their efforts. Through their interactions, they come to know, respect and care for our students. They also do their best to engage with the learning activities set by the class teacher who is absent. Mr Barry, our Dean of Academic Administration, leads the substitute teachers, and he works hard to allocate substitute teachers to subjects where they hold expertise and skill. When the class teacher is away, learning activities are set and available to students on iLearn. All students know this, so don’t believe them if they come home and tell you that ‘there was nothing to learn’ or ‘we did nothing because we had a sub’. Your teenager might benefit from being challenged on this perspective! It is true that when a lesson is led by a substitute teacher there might be less explicit instruction and the student may be required to learn more independently – we are confident that while this might not be the student’s preference, they are capable of managing this experience. When they turn up to work for a substitute day of teaching, our casually employed staff work alongside our permanent staff, interact with teachers in the subject area that they are leading that day, take recess and lunch duties and engage with our students inside and outside of the classroom. They are a wonderful, energetic and agile group of people and we deeply value their contributions.

Is your teenager thinking of studying at an American university?

Redlands offers SAT examinations on campus for students applying to study in the US. As most US Universities are currently test-optional for admissions up to 2024, and some beyond this date, we actually recommend to most students that there is no need to sit the SAT exams.

For those who do wish to sit the SAT exam, Redlands will be offering one examination date in 2023 on 6 May. Registrations open today so we recommend that you register as soon as possible to secure a place. Register via the College Board

Please note that from 2023, the SAT exams will be digital. The College Board offers information sessions for students who wish to learn more about the digital SAT.

Other test dates are being run at various test centres if the May 6 does not suit you – please find more information here.

University and Careers

Please see the Careers Pulse page for information on events, pathways and universities.

This week we are highlighting the following:

Volunteer with your Local SES

Volunteering with the State Emergency Service is a great way to get out there and assist your community in a disaster. There are usually lots of different kinds of roles you can volunteer for – you might be helping out alongside emergency workers, creating disaster prevention plans with the council, helping deliver sandbags to areas preparing for floods, or cleaning up after storms. In many states you can volunteer with the SES once you turn 16, but you might need permission from your parents or guardians. See more about becoming an SES volunteer in New South Wales.

You can also find lots of other different volunteering roles through Volunteering Australia.

National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) 2023

2023 Tutor Group Visions

In this week’s Yr 11 Pastoral Team Meeting, Yr 11 Tutors gathered to discuss the visions for their Tutor Groups in 2023. Below are the thoughtful visions which were established by each of the Yr 11 Tutors for 2023:

Ms Lily Peschardt – “For Dumolo Blue to focus beyond themselves and participate in all the opportunities Redlands has to offer such as service opportunities or mentoring younger students – throw yourself into the life of the school!”

Mr Jimmy Tod-Hill – “Roseby White’s vision is to embrace their strengths, acknowledge their weaknesses and work to bridge the gaps between who they are now and the best they can be in 2023…”, all while supporting their peers to do the same.”

Ms Jessica Lasky – “For McDouall Blue to respect others, listen to pastoral content and look outwards.”

Mr Mike Warrell – “For Dumolo Red to be confident and self-aware young people who have developed the skills to effectively manage themselves and their relationships with their peers”

Ms Victoria Mukherjee – “For Cowper Blue to be active listeners, active leaders and be confident as Year 12 leaders.”

Mr Fabian Byrne – “For McDouall Blue to have increased self-awareness, backfill gaps in their academic learning and reinforce the building blocks of the subject course they undertake in 2023.”

Ms Ellie Dalton – “For Roseby Red to look out for each other and help one another through the challenges of the year and enjoy their final year”

Mr Yuji Okawa – “For Cowper Yellow to take up the challenge and make a positive impact on the school community and beyond!”

With the 2023 visions in mind, a big thank you to all the Yr 11 Tutors who have done an exceptional job this year looking after the wellbeing of each student in their Tutor Group.

Yearly Examinations

Students have approached this week with preparedness and a positive mindset. Yr 10 have arrived on time each morning and started examinations with focus. Our Pastoral Care Program includes several lessons aimed at developing self-management: regulating emotions to handle stress, control impulses, and motivating oneself to persevere in overcoming obstacles, setting and monitoring progress toward the achievement of personal and academic goals; expressing emotions appropriately. This week provides an opportunity for students to continue building and reflecting on these capabilities. Well done to all students as they navigate this challenging week.

Harbour Cruise Info and Appropriate Dress

Thank you for purchasing tickets for the Harbour Cruise next Friday 4 November with Captain Cook Cruises. Students are all very excited and seem to be looking forward to this evening event together.

Thank you for your assistance in reminding students that this is a school-sponsored event. Therefore, the same rules and expectations that apply at school will apply during this event. The following items have been explained to students and a few key messages are listed below:

  • Students are to arrive at Darling Harbour Wharf 1, King Street Wharf, no later than 6:45pm to ensure we can close boarding and begin the evening’s festivities at 7pm. Additional time does need to be allocated for security checks run by Captain Cook.
  • Students are meant to wear formal or semi-formal attire (ie. suits, pantsuits, long dresses, midi-length dresses) and appropriate footwear to be comfortable walking around on a boat. A spare pair of flat shoes was recommended for any students planning to wear heels throughout the evening. Students are not able to take shoes off and walk around barefoot.
  • While many outfits are currently fashionable with cut-outs or portions of sheer fabric, students have been reminded that their outfit choices should be appropriate for a school event and we want everyone to be comfortable throughout the evening. On the off chance that a student does arrive with inappropriate attire, the student will be asked to put something over their outfit to cover appropriately.

We are looking forward to properly congratulating and celebrating Yr 10 for their incredible efforts, focus, engagement and leadership demonstrated this year.

Tomorrow Woman 2 November

Next Wednesday, we look forward to welcoming Tomorrow Woman to work with our Yr 10 students who identify as she/her. The Her Code workshop aims to question the confines and expectations of modern womanhood. Amidst a barrage of confusing messages coming from all angles, depression, anxiety, negative body image and low self-esteem are on the rise in women. Tomorrow Woman creates a space for women to practise their innate voice and learn to rise above social pressures and expectations, valuing being brave over being perfect.

Run by an experienced facilitator from Tomorrow Woman, this signature two-hour experiential workshop creates a safe non-judgmental space in the virtual world to explore tricky topics in a relatable way and get to the heart of issues that women are facing every day. They train the skills that enable women to express their authentic selves beyond the room and beyond the screen and live their own version of a woman of tomorrow. Participants leave the space with strengthened resilience, self-confidence and connectedness to their peer group.

Calculator Requirements for Maths Yr 11 and Yr 12

After the Yearly Examinations, Yr 10 Mathematics classes will be rearranged into Yr 11 courses so students can start to see the level of Mathematics and pace of the course students have chosen. The HSC or IB required calculator will be used immediately to support students in learning how to use it as soon as possible. Teachers will be showing students how to use these in their classes.

All HSC students will require an approved calculator for their classes. While there are several approved calculators on the list provided by NSW Education Standards Authority, the most commonly used one by our students and used by our teachers is the fx-82AU, fx-82AU PLUS or fx-82AU PLUS II 1st or 2nd Edition. This is the same calculator required for Yrs 7-10 and most students already own this calculator. If students have lost, broken or misplaced their calculator, they are encouraged to purchase a new one to use for the remainder of this year. They must have it with them each day for their Mathematics class.

All IB students will require a graphics calculator for both IB Maths courses AA and AI. Redlands uses the TI-nspire CXII. Redlands has connected with a supplier and students can purchase the GDC with the information below. The price is slightly discounted. Students need to order by Sunday 30 October 2022 to receive the calculator after camp Monday 14 November 2022.

The following document provides all the details on how to order the appropriate GDC.

View Here

If students choose to purchase their own TI-nspire GDC independently, please ensure students also have access to the software for student laptops as well. When purchasing a new GDC, this is included automatically. If you have any questions, please encourage students to speak with their Mathematics teacher or Assistant Head of Department, Mrs Libby Busch.

SAT Examinations

Redlands runs SAT examinations on campus for students applying to study in the US. Most US Universities are currently test-optional for admissions up to 2024, and some beyond that date. We therefore recommend to most students that there is no need to sit the SATs.

For those who wish to sit the SAT, Redlands will be running one examination date in 2023 on 6 May. Registrations are open now, so we recommend you register as soon as possible to secure a place. You must register directly with the College Board:

Please note that from 2023 SATs will be digital. The College Board is running information sessions which students can sign up to, to learn more about the digital SAT.

Other test dates are being run at various test centres if 6 May does not suit

Yr 10 Catch-Up Meningococcal ACWY Vaccinations Thursday 3 November 2022

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The final clinic for 2022 will take place on Thursday 3 November. It will offer a catch-up opportunity for the Year 10 Meningococcal vaccine.

Parent Information Kits with consent cards have already been completed parents earlier in the year and there is no further administrative action required.

On the day of the vaccination clinic please ensure;

  • your child eats breakfast
  • your child brings a mask to wear whilst in the clinic
  • your child does not attend school if they are unwell or if they have any symptoms of Covid

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic as a physical card. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Parents can obtain this through the myGov website or the Express Plus Medicare Mobile app. (Anyone aged 14 years or older has to get their own statement).

Examination Preparation

Yr 8 students have continued their examination preparation this week and have utilised the ‘study bubbles’ provided during Tutor time well. On Friday we engaged in a technology free study session, with an emphasis on handwritten notes, flashcard retrieval strategies and collaborative work in developing mind-maps and responses to questions from the various study guides provided by each department.

Wellbeing During an Exam Period

As examination blocks can be stressful times for students there are several considerations over the next week that may help to ensure wellbeing during this time.

  • Physical activity – students are encouraged to ensure that they are keeping their exercise routines or simply spending sometime outside by going for a walk each day to break up study sessions.
  • Study loads – completing several exams daily does take a toll in terms of mental fatigue. Nightly study routines of 60 to 90 minutes may be shortened and should focus on consolidation rather than new content – much of the hard work has already been done in the weeks of preparation leading up to tasks and students’ brains need rest.
  • Rest – students should ensure that they are getting a good night’s sleep to perform at their best each day of next week. Long, late night study sessions often have little impact on academic results.

Yr 8 Drama Performances

Congratulations to all the Yr 8 Drama students who completed their performances on Monday and Tuesday this week. A huge thank you to those students who helped to run the production side of things across both nights as well.

Catch-up Vaccinations

Some Yr 8 students are due for a catch-up vaccination because they missed one of the previous clinics. The clinic will take place on Thursday 3 November, and students and parents will be contacted via email with specific times.

Key Dates

  • Week 4 – Yr 8 Yearly Examination Block
  • Week 7 – Monday 21 & Tuesday 22nd Nov – Yr 8 STEAM

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

The final clinic for 2022 will take place on Thursday 3 November. It will offer the Year 7 HPV dose 2 and dTpa (whooping cough) vaccines.

Parent Information Kits with consent cards have already been completed parents earlier in the year and there is no further administrative action required.

On the day of the vaccination clinic please ensure:

  • your child brings a mask to wear whilst in the clinic
  • your child does not attend school if they are unwell or if they have any symptoms of Covid

Absent Students

Please note that to improve vaccination completion, Year 7 students will be offered a catch-up vaccination at a subsequent clinic in 2023 if they have missed a vaccination in 2022. They do not need to go to their GP for the missed vaccine.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic as a physical card. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories. Parent Appreciation – Thank You

Tonight, I am looking forward to joining staff and Board Directors at our annual School ‘thank you’ to our many parent volunteers, whose dedication and service to our community makes such a significant difference to Redlands.

The voluntary roles that so many of our parents play has a significant role in fostering and strengthening the palpable sense of school community that embodies Redlands as was highlighted in our most recent external parent survey as an absolute strength of the School. It also serves a great example of a giving back mindset that volunteering models to our children as well as others.

I acknowledge the parents who have selflessly served our community in roles this year including as members of our School Board of Directors, The Redlands Parents and Friends Association, Class Parent Representatives, the Foundation Steering Committee, Friends of Groups, alongside the many parents who have taken the time to share their expertise and wisdom in the context of supporting learning or cocurricular activities.

On Tuesday, we held the final meeting of 2022 of our Junior School Class Parent representatives and I thank them for the role they have played in building relationships and friendships within classes and year groups and embodying the spirit of school community here at Redlands. On behalf of all of our Junior School families and teachers, I extend my sincere gratitude to our Junior School class parents for this year.

Leading and supporting these parents, we have been fortunate to have had Catherine Brown and Catherine Grinham in the role of Junior School Parent Group Coordinators this year and I extend my appreciation to them both for their calm, people-focused leadership and for being such an important conduit between the School and our parent community; it has truly made a difference.

World Teacher’s Day – Friday 28 October

Tomorrow is World Teachers’ Day and on behalf of the staff, I extend appreciation to the Redlands Parents and Friends Association who will be providing a delicious pastry for morning tea for the staff to acknowledge the occasion.

Our Redlands staff continue to demonstrate great care, expertise, collegiality and passion for the work that they do, and it is humbling to work alongside them each day in a profession that we know has such a profound impact on so many people for years to come and sometimes for a lifetime. We all remember our favourite teachers from school and why that is the case, right?

Below is a message from JP Forrest, RPFA President, which has also been passed on to Redlands staff:

On this World Teacher’s Day, on behalf of all Redlands parents, the RPFA would again like to thank our wonderful teachers for the tireless work you do to educate our children.

We appreciate your efforts to provide a welcoming learning environment for all of our young people and at the same time challenge and stimulate their minds, not accepting less than their best. We value how much you believe in them for who they are today and see their potential, motivate them to dig deeper, dream big and hold a growth mindset. We are grateful for the care, the patience, the role modelling, the enthusiasm, the shared knowledge and how you engage and inspire our children every day. And for all the things we know you do that we can never directly witness, we do see it shine through in the way our young people step into the world and thrive.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all!

Wellbeing Thursday

What a day we had last Thursday in Prep! A big shout out to Mrs Clinton and all the staff who collaborated to create a day of fun and most importantly, focusing on the wellbeing of our staff and students. After a year of slowly returning to normal, wellbeing Thursday was exactly what we all needed to extend and nourish the relationships and connections across the school that we had so sadly missed over the last few years.

The Year 6 Technology leaders, Kate Rintoul, Hugo McDonald, and Connor Price, along with Ms Anagnostu filmed, edited, and shared this video about Prep’s special day. Enjoy!

Prep Playground Reminders

A reminder that if you have picked up your child in the afternoon and you are remaining in the playground for a period of time, can I please ask that you ensure your child doesn’t climb on the play equipment. This also applies to toddlers who may also be with you. The play equipment is used for the OOSH students after school only.

We also request that no sharing of food or ‘after school treats’ occurs after school hours in our school playground please. The eating times on school ground are at recess and lunchtime. Please take your child home or off campus to a nearby park if you wish to share food between your child and others. Thank you.

Celebrating Diwali

This week we were fortunate to have some of our parents, Sonya and Leah, come to preschool to share how they celebrate Diwali. Diwali is India’s biggest festival which is celebrated in India and SE Asia it is also called the festival of lights, it celebrates good over bad. Families celebrates by lighting candles, sparklers and buying new clothes. In the evening they wear the new clothes, light candles and decorate with colour. Inviting good into their homes. The children enjoyed decorating little clay lanterns called Diya, that they were able to take home and light with their families. Using coloured powder, they also made patterns called Rangoli. We are grateful to have and celebrate many different cultures at Redlands. Having parents share first-hand experiences with the children ensures authentic knowledge and understanding is passed on to the children. It means a great deal to us.

Extended Care

There will be an information zoom session for new and existing families on Wednesday 2 November at 5.30pm. We will cover enrolment process for 2023, transition from Extended Care to OSH, and also talk about the upcoming Vacation Care program. To join us please use the following link.

INDEPENDENT SPORTING ASSOCIATION

ISA CODE OF CONDUCT

As we move into round 2 of the Summer ISA Sporting Season, we would like to draw your attention to the ISA Code of Conduct for both Players and Spectators. The full document is available on the Secondary School Sport page of Redlands Pulse and we encourage all parents and players to familiarise themselves with the expectations when participating in participating in ISA sporting competitions.

GUIDELINES FOR PLAYERS

2.1       Once committed to a sport for the season, players must honour that commitment wholeheartedly. This same commitment applies to ISA representation. (Level of breach: 1,  2 or 3)

2.2       Players are expected to be modest in success and generous in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion.  (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.3       Players are also expected to acknowledge, willingly and openly, good play by either school.
Players should not celebrate the opposition’s mistakes. (Level of breach: 1)

2.4       Players should be positive in their approach to games and should adhere strictly to the rules/laws and spirit of the game. The referee or umpire’s decision is final, and the Captain of the team is the onlyone who may ask for clarification of a decision at the appropriate time. (Level of breach: 1 or 2)

2.5       The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.6       Players shall never resort to violent or abusive language or behaviour or engage in unfair or illegal tactics to gain an advantage.  Racial vilification will not be tolerated under any circumstances. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

2.7        Players should be punctual and adhere to their school’s dress code. The home team, and in particular the Captain, should welcome the visiting team and its Captain.  At the conclusion of the game acknowledgment and thanks should be given to referees, umpires, officials such as scorers/touch judges and the opposition. (Level of breach: 1)

GUIDELINES FOR SPECTATORS

3.1       Spectators must remember that this is “kids” school sport, let them have fun. It is not the World Cup.

3.2       Spectators are expected to be positive role models. They must behave respectfully and courteously towards players, coaches, match officials and other spectators. (Level of breach: 1, 2 and 3)

3.3       Spectators are not to approach or address game officials or any of the opposing players, spectators or staff.  If a spectator has a genuine concern, this needs to be presented to their own school official who will determine any action to be taken. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.4       Unless invited onto a field/court, spectators must never encroach onto the field/court. (Level of breach: 1, 2 or 3)

3.5       Barracking should be enthusiastic and positive, but not designed to heckle, denigrate or unsettle opponents.  For example, barracking during a free throw or a kick at goal and so forth is always bad sportsmanship.  (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.6       Sledging and negative comments are totally unacceptable. Good play by either team should be recognised by applause. (Level of breach 1 or 2)

3.7       It is never right to express disapproval of a referee or umpire’s decision, irrespective of his/her age. The ISA is committed to a ZERO TOLERANCE approach for any abuse towards officials through negative comments or actions. (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.8       Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence, rough or illegal play.  (Level of breach 2 or 3)

3.9       Visitors to the grounds should co-operate fully with any regulations or requests made by the host school, such as car parking, seating, dressing rooms and the placing of spectators.  At all times visitors should leave the area tidy and free of rubbish when they leave.  (Level of breach 1, 2 or 3)

3.10       Alcohol is not to be consumed at ISA fixtures. (Level of breach: 2 or 3)

Basketball

It was fantastic to see our students back in action in Round 1 of the ISA Basketball Season. Kicking the season off with some fantastic results in the Girls Basketball program, winning 7 out of a possible 8 games. The Boys program saw a mixture of results in Round 1, winning 6 out of a possible 18 games.

Please check the fixtures for this weekend, available on the Redlands Pulse – Fixtures tab, with these details also available on your student timetable.

A reminder to students that attendance at all training sessions and games is compulsory within the basketball program. Further details regarding expectations for Representative Sport can be found in the student planner. Unexplained absences will result in school disciplinary action.

Best of luck to all of our teams in Round 2 of the ISA Basketball Season.

Touch Football

Our teams were able to take to the fields on Saturday and enjoy some Touch Football in the sunshine. Redlands hosted gala day for Round One of ISA, with great sportsmanship demonstrated across all games. Results were mixed throughout our 13 teams that played, highlights of the day included solid wins in our Boys Snr 3 and Girls Snr 1, Inter A and Inter B. As well as these wins, we had three hard fought draws across the Jnr B Boys, Inter B Girls and Snr 3 Girls divisions.

A big congratulations to all players and coaches as we build going into next week.

During this ISA season, our coaches will recognise our Redlands Team of the week. These players demonstrate commitment to the team in trainings, and outstanding performance in games. Team of the week will be updated weekly on the Touch Football sports page on Pulse.

Tennis

Redlands Tennis started its first round of competition for this term in both NSTA and TNB last weekend! We hope all players were able to learn from their first matches and work on improvements during training for the upcoming weekend. It is important all players are familiar with the expectations of Representative Tennis in terms of attendance, scoring, etiquette, etc. so please make sure to look over the Player Handbook, Preliminary Information, competition rules and scoring over this week. All the best for your second round this weekend!

Please contact Ms Caitlin Wong should you have any questions regarding Summer Tennis.

Sailing

Last weekend saw the Sailors compete in the first point score Race Day of the Redlands Series, the weather conditions were good with a building breeze throughout the morning. In the Pacers, the Year 7 duo of Max Nicholson and Hugo Christy proved themselves against the older sailors, coming first in the overall results. Whilst the Elliott 7s experienced some incredibly close racing with it coming down to the final race of the day with the Team of Oliver Noakes, Jerry Sun, Otis Cooper and Amelia Foulstone taking out the day.

Fitness Centre

As we build into Term 4 we can also officially kick off our ISA Summer Sport Season. The Fitness Centre is available to all students and the optimum space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power.

Congratulations to Jake and Georgia on their recent performance at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships representing CIS. Both students had a great experience, performed superbly despite not making it to the NSW team but have certainly the groundwork for future events.

Redlands Pulse

The Junior School Sport pages on Redlands Pulse will continue to be the ‘source of truth’ for all information relating to sport this term. As you would be aware we have switched over to our new look Pulse later last term which allows more functionality and more positive user interaction. I am asking that if parents have an enquiry relating to Sport that your first port of call will be the Junior School Sport section of Redlands Pulse.

Sport Calendar

We have a Sport Calendar for each Term. To view the 2022 Term 4 Sports Calendar please click here

This calendar is regularly updated and provides all the key dates for you for school sport, carnivals and major events.

Wet Weather- Wednesday Sport

In the case of wet weather on a Wednesday, updates will be posted on our Wet Weather Pulse page. If you pick your child up directly at the venue, please refer to this page prior to going to ensure that they are at the venue as alternative plans may have been made depending on the location, weather and provider. Late changes to venues, times and staffing are shown in red font.

Contacting Junior Sports Department

All relevant documents and information for Sport are available to you on the Junior Sport Pulse Page.

Right place, Right time, Right equipment It is our aim for all Redlands Junior School Students to follow these three guidelines when they are playing sport, be it Representative Sport or Non-Representative Sport. Therefore we have put in place digital documents that will assist you in achieving these three things.

Representative Sport Expression of Interest

In looking at our current Representative Sport offering for Term 1 2023 we want to determine if there is interest for Cricket to be offered as an additional Saturday Sport.

Thanks to those families who have completed the EOI form. At this stage we only have 9 interested families across the whole Junior School. Please be aware that if we get enough players per grade to form a team in that grade there is no opportunity to change sports once Term 1 commences, that is if your child changes their mind when the season commences, they cannot go to another Sport. This will ensure the team does not ‘fold’ if students decide they don’t want to play anymore.

As an overall picture of what Cricket would look like at Redlands participating in our IPSHA competition, please refer to the points below:

It is a Rep Sport, meaning that it is played on Saturday morning like other Rep Sports. Games are 3 hours in duration.

IPSHA Cricket is played in school grades, not age groups.

IPSHA Format is different from club and representative cricket, softer ball, reduced overs, plastic stumps, reduced pitch length, modified rules, 90min games on average.

The formats and modifications of what school cricket is are not the ‘Traditional Cricket Game’ that most clubs play. Balls used are softer balls, not leather balls, plastic stumps are used for most of the matches with modified rules relating to bowling and batting.

Matches will be at away venues played each Saturday morning commencing no earlier than 7.30am and finishing before 12:00pm.

Venues can range from Barker @ Hornsby, Tudorhouse @ Bowral in the Southern Highlands to Scots College @ Eastern Suburbs. There would be no home games at Redlands in Term 1 if we proceed.

For us to submit a team in each grade, we need to submit a minimum of 8-10 players.

Based on this information and knowing that the IPSHA competition is not ‘Traditional Cricket’ as such you are welcome to complete this form so further discussion and investigation can take place at our end.

This by no means acceptance of a place in Cricket nor it is a loss of your place in your recent nomination for your 2023 Summer Sport.

Sunday Rehearsals for Kindergarten – Yr 11

We have been having so much fun trying on all our beautiful costumes for the End of Year Performance.

And we are really looking forward to piecing all aspects of our shows together in the upcoming extra rehearsals on Sunday 6 and Sunday 13 November.

It is crucial at this stage that all students are present for these rehearsals as it will impact the quality of the performances and also alleviate any nerves that might be rearing their heads.

It is also important that students are practising so that if they have any questions for teachers in their final classes, they can ask them to ensure that they know every aspect of their dance pieces. Every head, every arm, every angle needs to be correct!

For rehearsal schedules please see the End of Year Performance page on PULSE.

End of Year Performance – Permission Request

If your child is taking part in the Ballet & Dance End of Year Performance you will soon receive a request for permission to be granted for them to take part in this event. This will include travelling on the school bus to The Concourse, Chatswood and any associated costs.

End of Year Performance – Parent Information

Parent Information sheets were sent out yesterday to all families involved in the performance. These are available on the End of Year Performance page on PULSE.

End of Year Performance – Extra Performance

We are extremely excited to be offering an extra chance for our younger dancers to perform in a second show. Their performances are on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 November.

Wednesday 16 November 6.30pm

Kindergarten – Year 6 Performance: Pictures at an Exhibition only – no Senior Dance piece.

This performance showcases our younger Academy dancers’. It is only 45 minutes so is perfect for younger children in the audience. Bring the whole family, invite your friends along – it’s going to be fabulous!

Thursday 17 November 6.30pm

Kindergarten – Year 6 Performance: Pictures at an Exhibition followed by Twelve Days of Christmas (performed by Years 7-11)

This performance again features our younger Academy dancers in Pictures at an Exhibition followed by Twelve Days of Christmas which is performed by our Senior Academy dancers and our Junior Ballet Performers.

Friday 18 November 6.30pm

Senior Performance: Year 7 – Year 11

This is where we showcase our Senior Academy and Curriculum Dance students. The performance opens with a Grand Défilé, followed by Dancing Through Time and Twelve Days of Christmas. We look forward to a wonderful evening of Senior Dance.

End of Year Performance – Tickets

Tickets will be on sale very soon. A notification will be sent out to all Academy parents as soon as tickets are available.

The Academy are currently finalising the new 2023 timetables.

Due to exciting changes in the schedule, we will not be doing roll overs this year and invite all students to enrol for 2023 classes.

We will let you know as soon as the 2023 timetables and enrolment information is available on Pulse.

Music

Live Music! Love!

We will never again take for granted the richness of experiencing LIVE music in concert. Last Thursday, in support of their curriculum music-learning, Yr 9 Music students were treated to a performance by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra (SSO) playing Mozart’s Haffner Serenade at the City Recital Hall.  Next week, we are thrilled to be able to take our Yr 12 Music 2 & IB Music students to see Lior perform his collaboration with Australian composer Nigel Westlake with the SSO next Friday. Compassion has been well-loved as a set work of study for our Music 2 & IB students over past years, and we are thrilled to be able to experience this work in a rare live performance at the newly refurbished Opera House Concert Hall.  We are already looking to 2023 and excitedly aligning our curriculum with potential excursion opportunities.

Welcome Kirsty Hales

We are delighted to announce that the void on the desk in the Senior Campus Music Office has been filled by Ms Kirsty Hales. The daughter of a Head of Music, Kirsty grew up in the hallways of programs like ours, later pursuing music-making as a hobby herself, before garnering career experience as an Architectural Lighting Designer, Office Manager, and facilitator of many reputable Concert Band programs in NSW public schools.  We know you will join with us in welcoming Kirsty to our community!

Wishing you a great Week 4 to come!
