Paul Dillon’s Young People, Alcohol and Risk Taking: Looking After your Mates
This week, Yr 10 met and heard from Paul Dillon for the first of three sessions throughout Redlands Secondary School. Students were very engaged in his talk as Paul aimed to debunk the various myths around taking care of drunk mates and the use of drugs. The students appreciated Paul’s realistic and candid presentation of facts and the real-life scenarios he shared. A few take-aways from his session included:
- Eat a fist full of food 1.5 hours before drinking
- “It’s Water Time” means to have a glass of water before your first drink
- Plan ahead before a party and be prepared in order to have a fun and safe evening
- The most important equation to remember, Unconscious + alcohol = call ambulance
More and more young people are choosing not to drink or try drugs. It’s important to focus on the positive statistics. If you do abstain, you are completely normal. For any further questions and/or advice, Paul Dillon can be contacted via the following: p.dillon@darta.net.au and www.darta.net.au.
Yr 10 Half-Yearly Examinations
Students are reminded to refer to the letter sent to parents and students regarding the Yr 10 Half-Yearly Examinations on 8 April 2022. A few highlighted items have been reinforced with students this week and are listed below:
- Students are required to arrive at School prior to the commencement of their first scheduled examination, to give themselves plenty of time in case of unforeseen circumstances.
- Students will not need to sign in or out of the Secondary School Office when they arrive or leave School, as attendance will be taken separately for each examination, in the timetabled examination room.
- When students have scheduled exams: if they would prefer to be at School for the full duration of the day, there will be opportunities for quiet supervised study in the Library. If they arrive more than 30 minutes before their first examination or remain at school after their final examination, students will need to report to the Library and sign-in and sign-out appropriately. They are not to roam around other areas of the School during this time as normal classes will be in session for other Year Groups.
- Students will not be permitted to leave school between their scheduled examinations on the same day. For example, if students have an examination scheduled for Periods 1 and 2 and their next examination is scheduled for Periods 5 and 6, they are expected to remain at school between examinations and are not permitted to leave the campus. They should quietly study in the Library during this time and will need to sign-in and out accordingly.
- We remind all students that they are expected to be in proper full school uniform during their Examination Week.
- Thursday Sport Training will be mandatory during the Examination Week and students may wear their Sports uniform to School on Thursday as usual. There will be no Tuesday training during Examination Week, but all other cocurricular activities will proceed as usual.
We maintain the highest expectations of behaviour, respect and courtesy from students when travelling to and from school as they will be representing themselves, their Year Group and Redlands very publicly during this time, especially if they are travelling to and from school at different times of the day. We also expect that after their examination, they go straight home and do not congregate or loiter at McDonalds or Neutral Bay/Cremorne Shops. Any reports of improper behaviour will be dealt with in a timely and appropriate manner.
Yr 10 is wished all the best as they prepare this weekend and complete their first Half-Yearly Examinations next week.
