Issue 13 2022 Term 2 Week 3 - 12 May 2022

From The Principal

It has been encouraging this term to be able to look forward and plan a broader range of school community events, as COVID protocols have continued to be modified and case numbers have been relatively low. It was wonderful to be able to welcome Junior Campus mothers and carers to the School on Monday as we celebrated with a Mother’s Day breakfast. There were many excited students proudly showing their mothers around the School and the buzz in the grounds was heartening.

As many of you would be aware, NAPLAN has been taking place this week, with the first year of online assessment occurring for students. I greatly appreciate the administrative work behind the scenes by the ICT team and other support and operational staff during this period. We do not specifically focus on teaching to the content of NAPLAN assessments and they are limited to being one data point during a two-year period for students. Having said that, the data is certainly useful to complement the full range of data we collect through our iGrow data program, which provides a more complete picture of a student’s holistic development.

Year 6 students thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Canberra last week and Year 4 students are currently on camp this week. These experiential learning experiences are an essential part of a Redlands education and it is pleasing to see students once again having these important opportunities to grow and develop a range of skills.

I continue to be extremely impressed with the quality of musicianship in the School and last Friday evening’s Senior Piano competition was no exception. The standard of performance was incredible and congratulations to all students on their dedication and commitment in reaching such a high standard. Ahnu Guan (Year 10) was awarded the trophy for best overall performance, which is an outstanding achievement.

I am looking forward to catching up with parents, carers and alumni at the Science and Innovation Luncheon at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron in Kirribilli next Friday, 20 May. There are a few tickets remaining and these can be booked HERE. Bookings will close at 1pm, Monday 16 May. Learning Through Experience

On the whole, student learning happens via intentional experiences designed by teachers to support and challenge. Students ‘do’ so they learn, and often, this doing can feel uncomfortable and difficult. One thing I admire about Redlands students is how willing they are to have a go and leap in despite the discomfort. This week we’ve seen so many examples of students learning via experience. They do this in the classroom, like Yr 12 HSC students engaging in lightning writing in their English lesson, below.

Tasked with writing about their worst day this year (you’ll be pleased to know some couldn’t think of a really bad day) in evocative or humorous ways, they moved into the personal writing space fairly easily in order to emulate the writing style of a celebrated author, studied in class.

Yr 7 Burn Bright

On Monday, Yr 7 engaged with the team from Burn Bright exploring positive peer relationships to enhance a greater sense of belonging. We know that the transition to secondary school has been an enormous time of change and can at times be challenging for our young people. It is vital that our students build a sense of connectedness with their peers and the wider school community. If students are able to lay the foundation for the future early then secondary school can be an enjoyable and successful stage in their life. The Yr 7 ‘Recipe for Success’ program supported our wellbeing lessons, providing Redlands students with a toolkit to help them build important skills that will assist them in this time of transition. Students left the workshop with developed awareness of their identity, strengthened friendships and enhanced self-efficacy to improve resilience.

The Impact of Drugs and Alcohol with Paul Dillion

Redlands is committed to best practice drug and alcohol education. Supporting our PDHPE curriculum and Wellbeing programs, this Wednesday, Paul Dillion worked with Yr 10-12 students delivering a series of sequential school presentations providing high quality and accurate alcohol and other drug information to our young people. Talks attempted to debunk some of the myths in this area. Using the latest prevalence data, ‘positive norms’ were promoted. An update on vaping and e-cigarettes was also provided. Finally, the impact of drugs and alcohol on the adolescent brain was discussed, highlighting the potential risks of use during the teen years. Paul’s talks are engaging and real, and students left the space feeling empowered to make informed decisions to keep themselves and their friends safer when socialising.

Uniform and School Identity

Wearing a uniform creates an identity for a school and is an important part of being a school student. Wearing uniform with pride means our students are respecting and buying into our Redlands Vision, Mission and Values. Our uniforms are currently needing some TLC. Redlands has a two-step uniform management process and all students are to ensure their uniform meets regulations. Each term, if a uniform is being worn inappropriately, staff will have a formal conversation and issue a uniform demerit. Should a student’s uniform continue to fall below expectations, students will receive a second demerit and a Friday afternoon detention. Students have been reminded of Redlands uniform expectations and are to ensure that their uniform is looking sharp for the start of Week 4. Needing particular attention is hair being tied back neatly away from eyes, and up off shoulders for boys and girls, skirt lengths falling to the top of the knees and jewellery being limited on set of plain studs or sleepers in the lower lobe. Thank you for your support in helping us promote and maintain our positive image and identity within our wider community.

Sustainability Initiatives

Across the school, students of all ages are keen to engage in sustainable practices. Currently Yr 12 Environment Captains Iris Buisman and Jacob Gold have been working to support as many initiatives as possible, well supported by Kimberlee Chipper, Sustainability Working Group Chair.

Sustainable Cutlery – $2460 was spent on bamboo cutlery in the Secondary School from January to the end of March – every spoon or fork used by students and/or staff use costs 4 cents. When purchasing food that requires it from the canteen, students receive a set of bamboo cutlery. However, students who bring their own lunch to school need to bring their own cutlery to and from school. Sets of bamboo cutlery for this very purpose are available from K-Mart and lots of other retailers, and come housed in a compact container, which students can store safely and hygienically in their school bag. Students are encouraged to use these as a way to exercise responsible sustainability. Bringing lunch, and accompanying cutlery, to school each day requires organisation and forethought, which the students develop as they mature. Doing this as a way to be sustainable requires motivation and a belief that our actions, however small, can have a positive impact on the environment.

Single use water bottles – we are so lucky that we have readily available water-filling stations on the Senior Campus. The majority of students carry their own water bottle and fill it when they need to. Shortly, all single use plastic water bottles will be phased out, and replaced by paper water bottles, which are more environmentally friendly.

Waste audit – we are excited to be engaging in a waste audit in Week 6. The students are keen to assess and review the impact of their sustainability initiatives and report back to the community.

Sport Success (and a few injuries)

Touch Football

The 2022 Touch Football Captain, Katie Wightwick (Yr 12), spent last week coaching and mentoring the Sydney Scorpion All Abilities Touch Football team at the Australian National Touch League Championships. It was a huge achievement for Katie to be selected as the coach and mentor and we are immensely proud of her.

Redlands Director of Coaching: Touch Football, Jordan Parsonage, was also part of the Sydney Scorpions team that went to the Australian TLS. Jordan was the coach of the U20 Girls team who came out victorious. We are privileged to have Jordan as part of our program, as she is tasked with developing both coaches and players.

Swimming

We had a number of students compete at the NSWCIS Swimming Championships last week. The Inter Boys relay team made up of Lachlan Green (Yr 9), Xander Halfen (Yr 10), Rafferty Heard (Yr 10) and Julius Keller (Yr 10) finished 10th overall, with a time of 2:09.56 – a great effort!

A further congratulations to Meera Coburn and Emilie Bessell who have both been selected into the NSWCIS team and Renae Garlepp who will be the coach of this team. A special mention to Kate Seebohm who was the NSWCIS Girls’ Basketball Convenor and played a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the event!

Swimming

Over the previous holidays Redlands had two swimmers compete at the 2022 Australian Age Swimming Championships in Adelaide. A huge congratulations to 2022 Swimming Captain Erik Scott (Yr 12) and Xander Halfen (Yr 10) who represented both Manly and Warringah respectively.

  • Erik finished 22ndin U17 50m Backstroke, 24th in the U17 100m Backstroke and 26th in the U17 200m Backstroke
  • Xander finished 44thin the U15 100m Backstroke. Xander’s Warringah team also swam in the 4x50m Medley Relay coming away with a gold medal! This is a huge achievement for Xander and his swim team

Gymnastics

Congratulations to Orabella Cornelius and Charli Amm who have been selected to represent NSW in the annual Australian Gymnastics Championships to be held on the Gold Coast in May. Best of luck and we can’t wait to hear how you go!

I wanted to take this opportunity to acknowledge and commend our students who have unfortunately been injured at the start of the season. Injuries in Sport do happen, and not just at Redlands, or in one form of sport. Adversity presents itself to us in all shapes and sizes, hitting us at different times, but how we bounce back and respond is the important part. Over the past few weeks, we have had a few students injure themselves while proudly representing Redlands on the field or court. We wish these students the very best with their recovery and look forward to them returning to the sporting arena once more. Any students who would like additional support with their rehabilitation can contact Jack Gooding (Director of Athletic Development), who will be able to assist students to keep active while in recovery.

Year 12

Yr 12 students have begun receiving their marks back from their recent Half-Yearly examinations. We have encouraged them to read and carefully consider the feedback they receive from their teachers, rather than just focus on their marks. The Yr 12 journey is a marathon and the assessments throughout the year are aimed at helping them reach their peak for their final examination in October and November. They have also been given time this week to work in HSC and IB groups to share their ideas and study tips with each other.

Drug and Alcohol and Training Australia

This week Yr 12 were visited by Paul Dillon, from DARTA (Drug and Alcohol and Training Australia) for the final time with our Year Group. Paul focused on the last year at school, and ‘What do I need to know about alcohol and other drugs?’ Despite the serious topic of driving, drinking and drug use, Paul connected easily with students and spoke in an accessible manner. He encouraged students to be as prepared as possible by being well versed about the process of random breath testing (RBT), roadside (RDT) or mobile drug testing (MDT). He provided students with some basic facts about drugs, vaping, and the probable impact of being caught with an illicit substance and the far-reaching effects this could have on a young person’s life. Perhaps, most importantly, he again discussed the importance of seeking help quickly for a friend, should something go wrong.

Paul Dillon Presentation.

Yr 11 had the opportunity to meet with Paul Dillon on Wednesday as part of his presentation on Cannabis and Other Drugs. It was pleasing to see Paul debunk some of the myths in this area, particularly with understanding the long-term effects of cannabis usage and how it affects an adolescent brain which can lead to significant mental health issues. It was alarming to see the increase in the prevalence rates of cannabis usage, particularly in e-cigarettes and vaping, often used by Secondary School students. Yr 11 found the presentation really useful, particularly when it came to understanding the effects of cannabis, vaping, and alcohol including knowing when to call an ambulance and using the app – emergency+ in the case of an emergency. The Emergency+ app is a free app developed by Australia’s emergency services and their Government and industry partners. The app uses GPS functionality built into smartphones to help a Triple Zero caller provide critical location details required to mobilise emergency services.

For further information on cannabis and other related drugs such as e-cigarettes and vaping, the following resources can be accessed here via Paul Dillons ‘Drug and Alcohol Research and Training Australia’ (DARTA) website.

Paul Dillon’s Young People, Alcohol and Risk Taking: Looking After your Mates

This week, Yr 10 met and heard from Paul Dillon for the first of three sessions throughout Redlands Secondary School. Students were very engaged in his talk as Paul aimed to debunk the various myths around taking care of drunk mates and the use of drugs. The students appreciated Paul’s realistic and candid presentation of facts and the real-life scenarios he shared. A few take-aways from his session included:

  • Eat a fist full of food 1.5 hours before drinking
  • “It’s Water Time” means to have a glass of water before your first drink
  • Plan ahead before a party and be prepared in order to have a fun and safe evening
  • The most important equation to remember, Unconscious + alcohol = call ambulance

More and more young people are choosing not to drink or try drugs.  It’s important to focus on the positive statistics.  If you do abstain, you are completely normal.  For any further questions and/or advice, Paul Dillon can be contacted via the following: p.dillon@darta.net.au and www.darta.net.au.

Yr 10 Half-Yearly Examinations

Students are reminded to refer to the letter sent to parents and students regarding the Yr 10 Half-Yearly Examinations on 8 April 2022. A few highlighted items have been reinforced with students this week and are listed below:

  • Students are required to arrive at School prior to the commencement of their first scheduled examination, to give themselves plenty of time in case of unforeseen circumstances.
  • Students will not need to sign in or out of the Secondary School Office when they arrive or leave School, as attendance will be taken separately for each examination, in the timetabled examination room.
  • When students have scheduled exams: if they would prefer to be at School for the full duration of the day, there will be opportunities for quiet supervised study in the Library. If they arrive more than 30 minutes before their first examination or remain at school after their final examination, students will need to report to the Library and sign-in and sign-out appropriately. They are not to roam around other areas of the School during this time as normal classes will be in session for other Year Groups.
  • Students will not be permitted to leave school between their scheduled examinations on the same day. For example, if students have an examination scheduled for Periods 1 and 2 and their next examination is scheduled for Periods 5 and 6, they are expected to remain at school between examinations and are not permitted to leave the campus. They should quietly study in the Library during this time and will need to sign-in and out accordingly.
  • We remind all students that they are expected to be in proper full school uniform during their Examination Week.
  • Thursday Sport Training will be mandatory during the Examination Week and students may wear their Sports uniform to School on Thursday as usual. There will be no Tuesday training during Examination Week, but all other cocurricular activities will proceed as usual.

We maintain the highest expectations of behaviour, respect and courtesy from students when travelling to and from school as they will be representing themselves, their Year Group and Redlands very publicly during this time, especially if they are travelling to and from school at different times of the day. We also expect that after their examination, they go straight home and do not congregate or loiter at McDonalds or Neutral Bay/Cremorne Shops. Any reports of improper behaviour will be dealt with in a timely and appropriate manner.

Yr 10 is wished all the best as they prepare this weekend and complete their first Half-Yearly Examinations next week.

Yr 10 Vaccinations 2022

The Year 10 Meningococcal ACWY clinic will be held on 26 May, 2022.

SCHOOL TV – Friendship & Belonging

“The ability to obtain, maintain and retain friendships is, according to all the childhood psychologists in the whole wide world, the greatest predictor of wellbeing. Having a rich repertoire of friends is a true indicator of whether your child is travelling ok.”

Michael Carr-Gregg

It is not always easy for children and teenagers to always know how to manage friendships. Learning how to make new friends and keep them involves a number of skills every young person needs to understand and develop. For some these skills will come very naturally, allowing them to easily move between different friendship groups, sharing their experiences and opening up to new people. For others, this can be much harder to navigate. Belonging to a group that is like-minded with similar interests is highly beneficial to a child’s wellbeing. Friendships are full of ups and downs and it is better for kids to learn how to manage and build their own friendships, even though as an adult carer you may be tempted to interfere.

Happiness & Gratitude

“Happiness is not the result of bouncing from one joy to the next; achieving happiness typically involves times of considerable discomfort. It’s more than simply a positive mood, it’s a state of wellbeing that encompasses living a good life.” Dr Michael Carr-Gregg

Happiness is defined as the balance of positive and negative emotions, combined with overall life satisfaction. Happiness and gratitude have been studied in positive psychology for many years and researchers have found that gratitude is always strongly associated with greater happiness. Although everyone has their own definition of happiness, many of us want to feel more positive emotions than negative ones. However, negative emotions are still important. They have a lot to teach us and alert us when things need to change. Practising gratitude helps people feel more of the positive emotions, enable us to relish good experiences, improve our overall health, deal with adversity and build strong relationships.

BURN BRIGHT

On Monday Yr 7 came together in Redlands Hall to take part in Burn Bright’s workshop “Recipe for Success”. During the morning we were joined by Deputy Principal, Mr Sean Corcoran and Reverend Tim St Quintin from St. Peter’s Church. Students enjoyed the opportunity to come together as a Year Group and found the workshop engaging and formative.

An outline of the program:

The transition to high school is an enormous time of change and can often present challenges for young people. Burn Bright – Recipe for Success helps students to build a sense of connectedness with their peers and the wider school community. Students are shown how to lay the foundation for the future so that high school becomes an enjoyable and successful stage in their life. The Year 7 ‘Recipe For Success’ program provides students with a toolkit to help them build important skills that will assist them in this time of transition. It encourages young people to build a sense of identity, supports new friendships and enhances self-efficacy to improve resilience.

Elements included:

  • Support in building positive relationships with peers to enhance a greater sense of belonging.
  • Build confidence to take positive steps to continue developing and nurturing new and existing friendships into the future.
  • Understand personal strengths and the strengths of others.
  • Appreciate diversity and celebrate difference.
  • Discover key ingredients for achieving their best and making positive choices.
  • Enhance the capacity to be resilient and to deal with difficult situations.

Many students are new to formal examination testing and students rose to the occasion demonstrating sound organisational skills and very pleasing examination technique.

During Tutor Time, Tutors assist students with study skills and examination technique. Our Dean of Studies. Ms Anna-Marie Rolon, spoke with students about formal assessment preparation and she has recommended Dr Prue Salter’s Study Skills Handbook as a worthwhile resource.

LIFT PASSES

When students have mobility issues due to illness /injury, we can organise a lift pass so that they can avoid using the stairwells. Of late, there have been many requests for lift passes from students, should your child have a legitimate need for a pass, please email smatthews@redlands.nsw.edu.au with a medical letter from your child’s GP or Physiotherapist.

LOST PROPERTY

Thank you to parents who have labelled their child’s winter uniform. Whilst Year 7 have adapted well to the Secondary School environment there are still occasions when students will misplace their belongings. It is only possible to return belongings to students if the item is clearly named.

A Collection of Connections

It was a joy to start the week by welcoming parents on campus for a Mother’s Day celebration and the buzz of having a significant number of parents and students together was palpable. The return of community events such as this one coupled with parents at sports fixtures and events continues to move us forward in every sense.

We are pleased to welcome parents back on campus for pick up, particularly those who have children in Prep School who can now wait on the grounds in the seating areas in either the Piazza or near Murdoch Street after they pick younger children up and wait for our students to depart at 3.20pm. Parents picking up for after school clubs and activities may also choose to wait on the grounds in these designated areas.

This should also further alleviate traffic congestion around our campus at pick up time. Parents are also reminded not to gather right outside the Junior School reception area at the end of the day, which is a designated student meeting point for our carline pick-up process. As has always been the case, please contact your child’s teacher to make a mutually convenient time if you would like to see them before or after school.

Another significant milestone was our first in-person, full Junior School assembly this year which was a joyous occasion with student performers and presenters in Dunnet Hall as we gathered collectively for the first time in 329 days.

Yr 4 Camp

As I write, this I am enjoying a day on Yr 4 Camp who are in the middle of their three-day camp to Milson Island and it has been wonderful to see the connection between students and between students and staff in an outdoor education setting. Just as was the case last week for Yr 6 camp, many students have shared how they have forged some new friendships and connections with peers in the groups by simply being in the same activity group.

We have posted some pictures of the trip so far on the Yr 4 page on Redlands Pulse for you to enjoy and get a feel of the trip so far and I look forward to joining families welcome the group back at approximately 2.45pm on Friday afternoon. I know you will also join me in thanking the amazing team of teachers here caring for the group. It is a huge responsibility, but the meticulous planning of Ms Cleary and the team has helped with the smooth organisation of the trip yet again.

Platinum Luncheon

As you may have read in the Foundation section of last week’s Note Day, The School was delighted to welcome just over seventy ‘Old Girls’ back to Redlands for a Platinum Luncheon. This was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the rich history and development of the School and connected to this, many of our Yr 6 students wrote cards full of warm wishes deepening connections across generations of Redlanders. The carefully written messages on each card brought great joy and delight to our Alumni and some have replied with personal messages to our students.

Lismore Appeal (until Friday 27 May)

This week our Student Representative Council (SRC) met to promote and encourage classmates to support The Northern River Children’s Services (NCRS), a not for profit organisation that is responsible for providing day care to over 2000 children in flood-impacted areas.

To help those in need, our students are creating boxes filled with donated school and art supplies to replenish materials lost during the floods. Students are also making cards for families that are going through the heartbreaking process of rebuilding their lives. We know that this project will provide the students with a sense of both empathy and purpose as we remind our NSW neighbours in Lismore, that they are cared for and not forgotten. We encourage families to support this opportunity in the coming weeks as we strive to make a difference to this community.

NAPLAN – Years 3 and 5

This week has seen students across Australia in Yrs 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit the National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy, or NAPLAN, as it is more commonly known.

I am proud of the way in which our students in Yrs 3 and 5 approached these assessments and I am grateful to the many teachers who have been preparing them and then looked after them during these national tests.  With the assessments moving to an online format this year for the first time, we hope to get the students’ results back earlier than in previous years which will further support teachers’ planning and focus for each student.

My thanks are extended to Ms Wilson and Mrs Smith for their considerable work behind the scenes to ensure that everything is organised, ably supported by our IT team, and to our class and Learning Plus teachers for looking after the academic and pastoral needs of their students, both before and during these tests.

Sustainability Initiative: Water Bottles

Further to the many strategic sustainability initiatives shared last week in Note Day, from Monday 30 May (Week 6), our Junior Campus will cease all water bottle sales. In the last two years, we have installed numerous filtered water bubblers and refilling stations throughout the campus, which get very good usage from the students. We know that nearly every student brings a water bottle to school each day and they are permitted to drink and rehydrate in class, as needed. As is already the case, if students forget to bring a water bottle to school, they will be encouraged to use a bubbler or will be provided with a paper cup.

Trial Hip Hop Classes for Junior School Students

A reminder that the Redlands Dance Academy is delighted to provide a free trial Hip Hop Dance class at 3.30pm next Monday 16 May with a view to starting classes from 30 May. There is no need to register; just turn up ready to dance in comfortable clothing!

Year 6 Families

Looking forward to 2023, our Yr 6 families should have received this ‘Save the Date’ information connected to the transition process into Secondary School at Redlands. Please do contact the Registrar if you have specific questions on this process.

It was a joy to start the week by welcoming parents on campus for a Mother’s Day Celebration and to welcome everyone into Redlands House and Prep classrooms where parents played, created, read, and were pampered in the massage chairs! A morning highlight was listening to the Prep students singing their special Mother’s Day song to a captivated audience. The buzz of having a significant number of parents and students together was palpable. Returning to community events such as this one continues to connect and move us forward in every sense.

Parents Back On Campus!

We are pleased to welcome parents back on campus for morning drop off and afternoon pick up. To help create an environment that is comfortable and safe for everyone, we ask you to respect the following guidelines:

Morning drop off

  • Prep Reception door and car line will continue to open at 8am
  • When walking children inside the campus, we ask parents to continue to encourage independence.    Your child should be carrying their bag and continue to unpack their belongings.
  • As time before school is precious preparation time for teachers, parents are encouraged to make interview times at other times for specific information sharing.
  • Once your child is dropped off and/or the bell has rung, parents are asked to leave the campus promptly please.

Afternoon pick up

  • Staggered car line times will remain the same.
  • If you are picking up inside the campus, we ask that you do not linger after collecting your child and leave by 3.30pm at the latest  the oval and Piazza areas are often used by other sections of the School.
  • Please be aware of new signage around our play equipment that states that students are not to use the play equipment without a staff member present. Please assist us in ensuring students are not playing on the play equipment at this time.
  • To ensure the safety of our students and community, dogs are not permitted inside the campus or should they be left unattended and tied up near the entrances to the school.
  • Please continue to use the Student Diary to inform the teacher of how and who will be picking them up each day.

Kindergarten on campus pick up

Kindergarten will meet any parents picking them up on campus at 2.45pm at the kindergarten steps (steps between the equipment). Parents are asked not to wait outside the classrooms.

Yr 1 on campus pick up
Students can be picked up at 3pm from the Year 1 meeting area which is outside the canteen door.

Yr 2 on campus pick up
Students can be picked up at 3.10pm. Parents are asked to wait at the Year 2 meeting area, on the piazza concrete seats.

Parents with older children in Junior school can wait in these designated areas until Junior School finishes at 3.20pm. We hope that this might help to alleviate traffic congestion around our campus at pick up time.

For after school activities please take note of the following pick-up areas:

Redlands House and Transition Gold

Mother’s Day Morning

It was such a treat to have so many families share a special morning in the preschool with the children. It feels like a lifetime ago that we could enjoy such an occasion. Thank you to all of the families that enjoyed engaging in a range of activities in the classrooms. The children do love to show you what they do, introduce you to their friends and spend some time in this space.

Spare Clothes

We have an extreme shortage of spare clothes at Redlands House, we only have a couple of spare pairs of tracksuit pants left, and have no shorts, skorts, socks, underpants or polo tops. Can we please ask that any spare clothes that may have gone home with your child be returned. If you have any school uniforms that no longer fit, please donate them to the preschool, even the old yellow polo tops would be beneficial at this time. Please ensure that your child has spare clothes in their bag also. Even children who rarely have toileting accidents need spare clothes including socks and underpants.

Student Achievement

Touch Football

We have two hugely success posts to write about from our Touch Football program.

The 2022 Touch Football Captain Katie Wightwick (Yr 12), spent last week coaching and mentoring the Sydney Scorpian All Abilities Touch Football team at the Australian National Touch League Championships. This was a huge achievement for Katie to be selected as the coach and mentor and something that we as a program are immensely proud of her for being a part of.

Redlands Director of Coaching: Touch Football Jordan Parsonage was also part of the Sydney Scorpians team that went to the Australian TLS. Jordy was the coach of the U20 Girls team who came out victorious, we are extremely lucky to have someone like Jordy as part of our program, with the development of both coaches and players alike in great hands.

Norths Touch Football, for those interested in joining the Norths Rep program for the upcoming NSW Touch Football Vardon Cup please email Norths Reps Touch Football more details. Teams of interest are Women’s (Open Age), Men’s (Open Age), Youth League Girls (13-17 years), Youth League Boys (13-17 years).

Winter Sport

Netball

Round 2 of the ISA Netball season kicked off last weekend with our first (or many) travel rounds. Our Inter B and C teams had a rather enjoyable trip to Bowral both walking away with some great victories. The 1st and 2nds headed to Oakhill College with some mixed results, with the 1sts unfortunately going down by 14, and the 2nds making light work of Oakhill College, after a slow first quarter, walking away with a 20 point win.

This week sees a few teams scattered around Sydney, which is a friendly reminder to all to ensure you leave ample time on Saturdays to get to your respective venues. Redlands Rhino has the up-to-date fixtures.

Players are also reminded that they must remove all jewellery before taking the court (Jewellery simple cannot be covered with tape, earrings need to be removed), and also need to have their nails clipped.

Waterpolo

We have had some great starts to the waterpolo season this year, with the Inter teams finally able to take the pool on Monday night, we are very much looking forward to them continuing over this term and next. The Seniors are moving into the back end of their season with finals just around the corner.

Football

After a washout in Round 1, It was fantastic to see all of our teams in action in Round 2. Our Boys Football program came up against St Andrew’s Cathedral School in the majority of the fixtures. Starting off with the 1st Boys, they had a great 3-1 win to start the day, showing that the pre-season preparation and holiday tournaments have the team well prepared. The 2nd Boys continued their fantastic start to the season with a 3-0 win, as did the 15A boys with a huge 7-0 win. Both the 14A and 14B Boys put up a good fight with a 3-0 and 2-1 loss respectively. The 13A team had some great chances but a late goal for SACS saw our 13As finish with a 2-1 loss. The 13B had a very tough match up against a strong St Patrick’s team, but kept a great attitude throughout the match.

The Girls Football program played all of their games at home on Saturday, with the Junior A team starting the day with a huge 10-0 win. The Junior Blue Girls followed suit with a competitive game against St Paul’s Grammar School, managing to sneak away with a 2-1 win. The 2nd Girls had a tough match up against St Paul’s Grammar School 1st team. The Redlands girls managed to create plenty of scoring opportunities, however narrow misses saw them finish the game with a 2-1 loss. The Junior Gold team had a tough match up against the Chevalier Junior A side and showed some great signs for the remainder of the season, but finished with a loss on this occasion. The 1st Girls came out firing against Chevalier 1st girls, dominating possession and creating multiple opportunities to score. Finishing the game with a huge 8-1 win, it was a great start to the season.

Our Director of Football, Gerry Gomez has selected a Redlands team of the week. Congratulations to the players who have been selected into the Boys or Girls team of the week for Round 2!

Hockey

Unfortunately Round 2 was a wash-out round for our Hockey program as the Blue Mountains Hockey field was unplayable with the recent rain. Despite this, our Hockey girls are very much looking forward to playing against Barker this Saturday 14 May in what should be a great challenge for our teams. We hope to see our Redlands players and parents arriving early or staying after their game to show support for the Redlands Hockey program.

It was great to see our Hockey Captain, Sophie McMillan working with some of our Junior School students last week. She assisted with the Friday morning Junior School skills session to share her knowledge and encourage some of our Junior School Hockey players. With some keen Hockey students in the JS, the future of Redlands Hockey is certainly looking bright!

We would like to ask our Hockey players and parents to save the date for the End of Season Hockey Function which will be held on Thursday 25 August. Further information will be provided soon.

Cross Country Training

We will continue to offer Cross Country training on Friday afternoons throughout Term 2 to interested students. These sessions are open to all students and will not only prepare students for the Cross Country Carnival but will also assist students participating in the 2022 Representative Winter Sports Season.

When:                          Friday Afternoons
Time:                           3.30pm-5.00pm
Venue:                         Balmoral Oval

If you are interested in joining this group please fill out the Cross Country Training Expression of Interest Form. Please contact Mr Walker (Head Coach) if you have any questions.

AFL

We are looking forward to round 3 this weekend, for all teams this weekend this Friday 13 and Saturday 14 May. The draws are available on the Redlands Pulse AFL, please ensure you check the Redlands Rhino for the most up to date fixture information each week.

Good luck to all our teams!

Tennis

With the sudden downpour last week, we are glad to have all teams in ISA and the Redlands Internal Competition on court and competing over the weekend. It was a great start to the season for our ISA teams who all claimed victories against their opponents – many in straight sets!

With many new students to tennis this season excited and ready to start proper matches and competition format, the Internal Competition started off strong as well. New players were able to pick up competition rules, scoring and etiquette and we hope to continue their progress over the season.

A reminder for Round 3 (14 May) this weekend:

  • If you are unable to attend Saturday competition, please email Caitlin Wong by no later than 12pm on Friday.
  • Please check the draw and playing pairs list to see when/where/who you are playing.
  • Students need to arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before start time.
  • For any questions, please email Caitlin Wong tennis@redlands.nsw.edu.au

Wishing students the best of luck for the next round of competition this weekend!

Rugby

Scots All Saints Trial

Despite some late changes, Saturday saw our Opens head out to Bathurst for an early morning trial match against Divisional rival Scots All Saints. In cold but sunny, Central West conditions our boys played a brilliant match, competing hard for the entirety of the game.

Redlands Rugby has been heavily affected by the weather and our inability to train collectively as a squad. Being able to travel to Berry for our Rugby Camp last weekend was a brilliant, giving us that opportunity to run through our attacking shape and build on our structures.

Back in Bathurst, the match started with Redlands dominating the possession early, with Hugh Sellar and Miles Eden combining perfectly in the forward pack. As Redlands started to build pressure, it was a quick pass from Joe Griffiths and a perfectly timed decoy line from Will Pearson which allowed Hugo Scott to streak away down field. Beating two defenders for speed and drawing in the last, Hugo put on a perfect pass to a supporting Josh Hicks who finished off the wonderful, length of the field draw. Try converted by Jamie Dawson-Damer and Redlands was on the scoreboard.

Late in the first half, Scots were able to build more pressure, needless penalties gifting them field position and time in our half. With all that possession Scots were able to run in two quick tries, leading 12 – 7 into the break.

The second half started in a similar way to the finish of the first. This time a number of offside penalties and loose carries meant that our backline was constantly under threat and having to make numerous cover tackles. With a quick turnover, Redlands looked set to get out of our half but a little fumble was snatched up by the opposition scrum half for a quick try. This seemed to wake up Redlands and we now really started to play. Will Pearson took an incredible carry, into the teeth of the defence and burst out the other side, setting up a brilliant support run for Max Stepniak. Samual Chubb, our half back, was beginning to build pressure, getting our forwards over the line and really forcing Scots to make their tackles. With a quick little carry away from the ruck and a great cut out ball, Sam put Kane Thompson into a hole from 25m out. Kane put the foot down, a quick right foot step and a fend being all the separation needed to score next to the post.

Final whistle, a narrow loss to Redlands but a great preparation for our Season Opener next week.

Fitness Centre

With Winter Sport Trials and preparation for the ISA Winter Sport Season underway, the Fitness Centre is the perfect space to develop speed, fundamental movements and also power. All students can access the morning sessions which run Monday to Friday start promptly at 6:30am. Already we have had a great number of students attending the sessions and look forward to welcoming more interested students over the coming weeks!

Students are reminded to bring with them the following.

  • A water bottle
  • Towel
  • Redlands PE / Sports Uniform

Sports and students are asked to contact the Director of Athletic Development Mr Jack Gooding jgooding@redlands.nsw.edu.au for any specific questions regarding these sessions.

I would also like to take this time to collectively thank Luke Jeffery, our Strength and Conditioning Coach, who has taken up a role at Riverview from Term 2 onwards. Luke has been an integral part of our program, especially across individual planning and also into the Rowing / Basketball programs.

Round 2 Winter Sport

The beautiful sunny conditions last week allowed all our Winter Teams the opportunity to play Round 2 under clear skies and a warm sun, very different from the days ahead of us in terms of weather. Our Yr 6 Football teams have been training very well and it shows on match day with two great all round performances over the last two weeks, while our younger Football teams are finding their feet in matches. Our fastest growing sport, Netball has had some great numbers in the optional morning session and while we were down a few students with sickness on the weekend, the season looks promising. Our Hockey team, made up of all Yr 5 girls had a great first match last week and look forward to this weeks game as they continue to learn the sport. Rugby, a growing sport at Redlands had a great win over St Aloysius’ College at Primrose Park on the weekend while our Yr 3 and 5 teams had a tough day in the Sevens at Koola Park, but show early signs of a good season ahead.

Coaches of each team are asked to nominate a player each week who they think stood out in their match, not only in the area of ability but including effort, enthusiasm and displaying the values of Redlands and Sport in general.

Last week our HICES Netball Representative, Tahlia Stone from Yr 6 made her back to Sydney to trial for the NSW CIS team. With over 100 girls trialing it was very competitive. They played  9 games, won 5, drew 1 and lost 3. Great experience and although she was not selected in the final team she trialled very well, making it into the possible and probables in the final round. On Monday we had four Yr 5 Hockey girls make their way to Pennant Hills for their CIS trial and while no one was selected in the CIS team, it was a great experience for our girls. In the Boys Hockey, Otis Gait was selected in the NSW CIS team for 2022 and we wish him luck as he prepares for NSW PSSA Competition. We wish our three Rugby boys, Lincoln, Tom and Harry the best of luck at their upcoming CIS Rugby trials.

Gymnastics Open Day- Competitive Gym Boys & Girls – Final reminder

In exciting news, we can confirm that IPSHA Gym will be up and running their carnival this year. As you would be aware, we have a new contractor, Aussie Gems Gymnastics, who are running our recreational program (Wednesday Sport ) as well as coming on board for this new representative Gym program (IPSHA Gym).

Snowsports

As we begin to prepare for the upcoming season Redlands has been involved in competitive Snowsports for many years and has won numerous awards at the national level for individual events and as a school. We are committed to prepare our students to ride and ski safely and competently to enjoy this wonderful lifelong family sport. To race, students need to confidently ski or snowboard on all blue runs.

The program commences with the start of the winter school holiday and if your children are keen to compete, they can enter the Redlands Cup followed by the Sydney Interschools Championships. Children can compete in a wide variety of ski and snowboard events with Redlands offering specialist training (Y1-12) for participants.

These events will take place from July 8 2022.For more information on how Junior School students can become involved in the Snowsports program please read the booklet on the following link.

Drama and Theatre

“Theatre is the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” – Oscar Wilde.

This rang true on Monday and Tuesday night when we had the first curriculum performance evening of the year. Non-linear, non-sensical storylines enthralled our audiences as we celebrated a night of Absurd Theatre. Congratulations to all involved.

Gala Arts

Audition submissions are now closed for Gala Arts. Tickets will go on sale throughout the term.

Theatresports

Senior Team

Next Tuesday the Senior Theatresports teams compete at Linfield Learning College in the first heat of the Impro Australia Theatresports Competition. We wish the following students the best of luck.

  • Omar Rihani
  • Kyle Banfield
  • Claudia Lalich
  • Maya Little

Intermediate Team

Last Friday the Intermediate Theatresports team competed at Normanhurst Boys High School in the preliminary heats. Overall, they placed 4th and are waiting to hear if they will progress round. Congratulations to all involved.

Senior Curriculum Performance Evenings

In the upcoming weeks, we have an array of senior curriculum performance evenings, showcasing their classwork over the semester. We encourage friends and family to attend to support all students involved. Please see the information below for these evenings.

Extra-subject Drama and Theatre

Classes are going well. If you want to enrol your child please contact drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au. Some classes are at capacity and have a waitlist.

Reminder: A friendly reminder to communicate with your child about their extra-curricular classes in the morning. We have had cases were students are in car line or their designated pick up spot and have needed to be located before class starts. Please ensure any absences are sent to drama@redlands.nsw.edu.au or your childs class tutor prior to the lesson.

Creative Kids Tuesday Class: Meet the new creative kids team. What fun we are having on Tuesday afternoons!

Music

Redlands Senior Piano Competition Winners

The piano extravaganza continues! Following on from a highly successful Junior Piano Competition, last Friday saw our Senior pianists take to the stage, to breathtaking end. Thoughtful, musical work was offered by our performers and once again our internationally acclaimed adjudicator Dr Jeremy Eskenazi praised the extremely high standard of performance craft, technical work and musicality he witnessed at Redlands.

Thanks are extended once again to all Music Department staff who worked together to ensure the success of this second event in our Piano Competition series, and to our Principal, Mr Stephen Webber who attended and presented our awards.

DIVISION ONE (YRS 7 & 8)
Winner:  Andy Guan
Runner Up:  Kevin Wang

DIVISION TWO (YRS 9 & 10)
Winner: Ahnu Guan
Runner Up: Sholto Mirrlees-Black

DIVISION 3 (YRS 11 & 12)

OVERALL COMPETITION WINNER:
Ahnu Guan

Huge congratulations to the Guan sisters, Ahnu & Ina, who between them took home BOTH Junior and Senior piano competition trophies this year! Such a feat!

Next stop in our annual competition series is the Senior Vocal Competition, to be followed by the Senior Instrumental Competition and Composition Competitions later in the year.

Senior Vocal Competition – 10 June

Speaking to the strong value for singing as an expressive art form at our school, an extraordinary number of auditions were submitted this year (with auditions closing last Friday). Thank you to every person who bravely submitted their audition videos to iLearn.  The panel are working through the uploads and deliberating on this very difficult decision. The selected finalists will be announced next week, with ticketing information to follow.

Private Tuition Studio Concert Series

Our Studio Concert Series each semester provides a relaxed opportunity for our developing musicians to share their progress with a supportive audience of family and friends.

Rooms have been allocated based on studio size to allow for appropriate distancing, with some studios combining. Though not ticketed, we ask all guests to please wear a mask while in attendance at these lunchtime concerts, and to follow the sign-in protocols of the respective school you are attending (Prep, Junior or Senior). As per the school policy, students and guests with any COVID symptoms on the day are required to stay at home.

Thank you in advance for your flexibility with the limited setup time for these informal events, with classes likely finishing in the concert space just minutes before the performances! Though there may be classes wrapping up as you arrive, and it can feel like a bit of a shamozzle, we are grateful to any parents who can arrive a bit early and help quickly whip the room in order for a 1pm start for our lovely music sharing time!
